Conventional optical fiber temperature/strain sensors often have to make compromises between the resolution and the dynamic range. Here we present a new method that meets the measurement requirements for both high resolution and large dynamic range. A high-quality optical fiber Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) constructed using a pair of chirped fiber Bragg gratings is employed as the sensor and a dual-mode direct spectrum interrogation method is proposed to identify the small drift of external temperature or strain. As a proof-of-concept illustration, a temperature resolution of 0.2 °C within 30–130 °C is demonstrated. For strain sensing, the resolution can be 10 µε within 0–1000 µε. The measurement resolution can be improved further by routinely increasing the reflectivity of the CFBG and the cavity length and the sensor can also be mass-produced. This new sensing schema not only resolves the conflict between the resolution and the dynamic range of fiber-optic temperature/strain sensors but can also be extended to other sensors and measurands. Tunnel excavation induces the stress redistribution of the surrounding rock. Structural cracks may develop in the secondary lining due to this stress redistribution and bias pressure, consequently affecting the overall construction safety of the tunnel. This paper aims to achieve real-time monitoring of the excavation stability of the lining structure by integrating two monitoring technologies: structural deformation monitoring and fiber grating strain monitoring. Additionally, it proposes a method to simultaneously measure the thermal strain and applied stress–strain of the structure. By analyzing the displacement and deformation of the lining structure, its stability can be preliminarily evaluated in the short term. To achieve long-term real-time monitoring and a more accurate assessment of the tunnel structure's stability, the paper introduces fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor monitoring technology. First, based on the geological stratigraphy information obtained from the exploration, a simulation model of the tunnel under different section bias angles is established. The displacement and stress concentration areas of the lining structure are then analyzed to optimize the sensor deployment array and provide a theoretical basis for the sensor arrangement. FBG strain sensors are installed on the surface of the structure to measure thermal strain and loading stress–strain, whereas FBG temperature sensors measure local temperature. The findings indicate that following tunnel excavation, the maximum daily strain differences at K107+043 and K107+240 were 126.87 µ ε and 209.38 µ ε , respectively. After a period of rock disturbance, the average daily strain differences due to applied stress–strain were 16.8 µ ε and 12.65 µ ε , respectively. The thermal strain was close to the daily strain difference. Therefore, after the rock disturbance subsided, the strain fluctuations in the lining structure were mainly caused by local temperature changes, and the surrounding rock tended to stabilize. A hybrid enhanced inverse finite element method (E-iFEM) is proposed for real-time intelligent sensing of discontinuous aerospace structures. The method can improve the flight performance of intelligent aircrafts by feeding back the structural shape information to the control system. Initially, the presented algorithm combines rigid kinematics with the classical iFEM to discretize the aerospace structures into elastic parts and rigid parts, which will effectively overcome structural complexity due to fluctuating bending stiffness and a special aerodynamic section. Subsequently, the rigid parts provide geometric constraints for the iFEM in the shape reconstruction method. Meanwhile, utilizing the Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor to obtain real-time strain information ensures lightweight and anti-interference of the monitoring system. Next, the strain data and the geometric constraints are processed by the iFEM for monitoring the full-field elastic deformation of the aerospace structures. The whole procedure can be interpreted as a piecewise sensing technology. Tunnel excavation induces the stress redistribution of surrounding rock. In this excavation process, the elastic strain in the rock is quickly released. When the maximum stress on the tunnel lining exceeds the concrete's load-bearing capacity, it causes cracking of the lining. Comprehensive geophysical exploration methods, including seismic computerized tomography, the high-density electrical method, and the ultrasonic single-plane test, indicated the presence of incomplete distribution of broken rock along the tunnel axis. Based on the geophysical exploration results, a carbon-fiber-strengthened tunnel simulation model was established to analyze the mechanical characteristics of the structure and provide a theoretical basis for sensor deployment. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors were used to measure the stress and strain changes in the second lining concrete after carbon reinforcement. Meanwhile, one temperature sensor was installed in each section to enable temperature compensation. The monitoring results demonstrated that the stress–strain of the second lining fluctuated within a small range, and the lining did not show any crack expansion behavior, which indicated that carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) played an effective role in controlling the structural deformation. This paper demonstrates an intruder detection system using a strain-based optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG), machine learning (ML), and adaptive thresholding to classify the intruder as no intruder, intruder, or wind at low levels of signal-to-noise ratio. We demonstrate the intruder detection system using a portion of a real fence manufactured and installed around one of the engineering college's gardens at King Saud University. The experimental results show that adaptive thresholding can help improve the performance of machine learning classifiers, such as linear discriminant analysis (LDA) or logistic regression algorithms in identifying an intruder's existence at low optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) scenarios. Strain sensors, especially fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, are of great importance in structural health monitoring, mechanical property analysis, and so on. Their metrological accuracy is typically evaluated by equal strength beams. The traditional strain calibration model using the equal strength beams was built based on an approximation method by small deformation theory. However, its measurement accuracy would be decreased while the beams are under the large deformation condition or under high temperature environments. For this reason, an optimized strain calibration model is developed for equal strength beams based on the deflection method. By combining the structural parameters of a specific equal strength beam and finite element analysis method, a correction coefficient is introduced into the traditional model, and an accurate application-oriented optimization formula is obtained for specific projects. The determination method of optimal deflection measurement position is also presented to further improve the strain calibration accuracy by error analysis of the deflection measurement system. Strain calibration experiments of the equal strength beam were carried out, and the error introduced by the calibration device can be reduced from 10 με to less than 1 με. Experimental results show that the optimized strain calibration model and the optimum deflection measurement position can be employed successfully under large deformation conditions, and the deformation measurement accuracy is improved greatly. This study is helpful to effectively establish metrological traceability for strain sensors and furthermore improve the measurement accuracy of strain sensors in practical engineering scenarious. The existing optical strain sensors based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) have limitations, such as a complex structure, a limited strain range (±200 με) and poor linearity performance (R-squared value < 0.9920); these limitations affect their potential practical applications. Here, four FBG strain sensors equipped with planar UV-curable resin are investigated. The proposed FBG strain sensors have a simple structure, a large strain range (±1800 με) and excellent linearity performance (R-squared value ≥ 0.9998); they further produce the following performances: (1) good optical properties, including an undistorted Bragg peak shape, narrow bandwidth (−3 dB bandwidth ≤ 0.65 nm) and a high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR, the absolute value of SMSR ≥ 15 dB); (2) good temperature sensing properties with high temperature sensitivities (≥47.7 pm/°C) and a good linearity performance (R-squared value ≥ 0.9990); and (3) excellent strain sensing properties with no hysteresis behavior (hysteresis error ≤ 0.058%) and excellent repeatability (repeatability error ≤ 0.045%). Real-time monitoring of the liquid core position during the continuous casting of steel has been demonstrated using low-cost distributed optical-fiber-based strain sensors. These sensors were installed on the containment roll support structures in the segments of a production continuous caster to detect the position of the solid–liquid interface and monitor the strand condition during the continuous casting. Distributed Fiber Bragg Grating sensors (FBGs) were used in this work to monitor strain at six roll positions in the caster. The sensor performance was first validated by comparing optical strain measurements with conventional strain gauge measurements in the lab. Next, optical strain measurements were performed on an isolated caster segment in a segment maintenance facility using hydraulic jacks to simulate the presence of a liquid core under the roll. Finally, the sensors were evaluated during caster operation. The sensors successfully detected the load increase associated with the presence of a liquid core under each instrumented roll location. Incidents of bulging and roll eccentricity were also detected using frequency analysis of the optical strain signal. The liquid core position measurements were compared using predictions from computer models (digital twins) in use at the production site. The measurements were in good agreement with the model predictions, with a few exceptions. Under certain transient caster operating conditions, such as spraying practice changes and SEN exchanges, the model predictions deviated slightly from the liquid core position determined from strain measurements. We propose a sensor design for measurement of large strains where direct application of a fiber optic strain gauge is impossible due to the stiffness mismatch between the optical fiber and the structure under test. The sensor design is based on a rhombus type compliant mechanism, which functions to attenuate input strain and transfer it to the ends of the sensing beam with the mounted optical strain gauge. We developed an analytical model of the sensor, which allows us to relate actuation forces, input displacement/strain, and output strain. The analytical model was verified with the finite element analysis and validated against an experimental prototype. The prototype sensor was able to handle input strains exceeding ±2.5 × 105 µε. Rubber-steel-layered structures are used in many engineering applications. Laminated rubber-steel bearing, as a type of seismic isolation device, is one of the most important applications of the rubber-steel-layered structures. Interfacial debonding in rubber-steel-layered structures is a typical failure mode, which can severely reduce their load-bearing capacity. In this paper, the authors developed a simple but effective active sensing approach using embedded piezoceramic transducers to provide an in-situ detection of the interfacial debonding between the rubber layers and steel plates. A sandwiched rubber-steel-layered specimen, consisting of one rubber layer and two steel plates, was fabricated as the test specimen. A novel installation technique, which allows the piezoceramic transducers to be fully embedded into the steel plates without changing the geometry and the surface conditions of the plates, was also developed in this research. The active sensing approach, in which designed stress waves can propagate between a pair of the embedded piezoceramic transducers (one as an actuator and the other one as a sensor), was employed to detect the steel-rubber debonding. When the rubber-steel debonding occurs, the debonded interfaces will attenuate the propagating stress wave, so that the amplitude of the received signal will decrease. The rubber-steel debonding was generated by pulling the two steel plates in opposite directions in a material-testing machine. The changes of the received signal before and after the debonding were characterized in a time domain and further quantified by using a wavelet packet-based energy index. Experiments on the healthy rubber-steel-layered specimen reveal that the piezoceramic-induced stress wave can propagate through the rubber layer. The destructive test on the specimen demonstrates that the piezoceramic-based active sensing approach can effectively detect the rubber-steel debonding failure in real time. The active sensing approach is often used in structures with "hard" materials, such as steel, concrete, and carbon fiber composites. Local strain measurements are considered as an effective method for structural health monitoring of high-temperature components, which require accurate, reliable and durable sensors. To develop strain sensors that can be used in higher temperature environments, an improved metal-packaged strain sensor based on a regenerated fiber Bragg grating (RFBG) fabricated in hydrogen (H2)-loaded boron–germanium (B–Ge) co-doped photosensitive fiber is developed using the process of combining magnetron sputtering and electroplating, addressing the limitation of mechanical strength degradation of silica optical fibers after annealing at a high temperature for regeneration. The regeneration characteristics of the RFBGs and the strain characteristics of the sensor are evaluated. Numerical simulation of the sensor is conducted using a three-dimensional finite element model. Anomalous decay behavior of two regeneration regimes is observed for the FBGs written in H2-loaded B–Ge co-doped fiber. The strain sensor exhibits good linearity, stability and repeatability when exposed to constant high temperatures of up to 540 °C. A satisfactory agreement is obtained between the experimental and numerical results in strain sensitivity. The results demonstrate that the improved metal-packaged strain sensors based on RFBGs in H2-loaded B–Ge co-doped fiber provide great potential for high-temperature applications by addressing the issues of mechanical integrity and packaging. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensors are embedded in composites to detect localized temperature gradients resulting from high energy infrared laser radiation. The goal is to detect the presence of radiation on a composite structure as rapidly as possible and to identify its location, much the same way human skin senses heat. A secondary goal is to determine how a network of sensors can be optimized to detect thermal damage in laser-irradiated composite materials or structures. Initial tests are conducted on polymer matrix composites reinforced with either carbon or glass fiber with a single optical fiber embedded into each specimen. As many as three sensors in each optical fiber measure the temporal and spatial thermal response of the composite to high energy radiation incident on the surface. Additional tests use a 2 × 2 × 3 array of 12 sensors embedded in a carbon fiber/epoxy composite to simultaneously measure temperature variations at locations on the composite surface and through the thickness. Results indicate that FBGs can be used to rapidly detect temperature gradients in a composite and their location, even for a direct strike of laser radiation on a sensor, when high temperatures can cause a non-uniform thermal response and FBG decay. A scheme for monitoring icing on overhead transmission lines with fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors is designed and evaluated both theoretically and experimentally. The influences of temperature and wind are considered. The results of field experiments using simulated ice loading on windless days indicate that the scheme is capable of monitoring the icing thickness within 0-30 mm with an accuracy of ±1 mm, a load cell error of 0.0308v, a repeatability error of 0.3328v and a hysteresis error is 0.026%. To improve the measurement during windy weather, a correction factor is added to the effective gravity acceleration, and the absolute FBG strain is replaced by its statistical average. A linearized wavelength-swept thermo-optic laser chip was applied to demonstrate a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor interrogation system. A broad tuning range of 11.8 nm was periodically obtained from the laser chip for a sweep rate of 16 Hz. To measure the linear time response of the reflection signal from the FBG sensor, a programmed driving signal was directly applied to the wavelength-swept laser chip. The linear wavelength response of the applied strain was clearly extracted with an R-squared value of 0.99994. To test the feasibility of the system for dynamic measurements, the dynamic strain was successfully interrogated with a repetition rate of 0.2 Hz by using this FBG sensor interrogation system. Strain Modal Testing (SMT), based on strain sensors signal processing, is an unconventional approach to perform Experimental Modal Analysis which is typically based on data measured by accelerometers. SMT is still mainly restricted to academia and requires additional investigation for a successful transition towards industry. This paper critically reviews why the automotive sector can benefit from this relatively new approach for a variety of reasons. Moreover, a case study representative of the automotive field is analyzed and discussed. Specifically, an SMT methodology is applied to evaluate the modal properties of a reinforced composite roof belonging to a racing solar powered vehicle. In the experimental activity, signals from Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors, strain gauges, and accelerometers were simultaneously acquired and further processed. The advantages of using optical fibers were discussed, together with their weaknesses and ongoing challenges. The knowledge that FBG functions similarly in internal strain sensors to how it functions in common external strain sensors will allow the application of FBG in actual structural parts and measurements under real load conditions. These results showed that more accurate hand modules than other glove modules applied to different hand sizes can be manufactured using FBG strain sensors that move continuously, with algorithms for tracking these movable FBG sensors. The electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique has been applied successfully to detect minor damage in engineering structures including reinforced concrete (RC). However, in the presence of temperature variations, it can cause false alarms in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. This paper has developed an innovative approach that integrates the EMI methodology with multilevel hierarchical machine learning techniques and the use of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature and strain sensors to evaluate the mechanical performance of RC beams strengthened with near surface mounted (NSM)-fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) under sustained load and varied temperatures. This problem is a real challenge since the bond behavior at the concrete–FRP interface plays a key role in the performance of this type of structure, and additionally, its failure occurs in a brittle and sudden way. The method was validated in a specimen tested over a period of 1.5 years under different conditions of sustained load and temperature. The analysis of the experimental results in an especially complex problem with the proposed approach demonstrated its effectiveness as an SHM method in a combined EMI–FBG framework. Fiber optic sensors are gradually replacing electrical sensors in geotechnical applications owing to their immunity to electrical interference, durability, and cost-effectiveness. However, additional protective measures are required to prevent loss of functionality due to damage to the sensors, cables, or connection parts (splices and/or connectors) during installation and completion processes in borehole applications. We introduce two cases of installing fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors in 1 km boreholes to monitor the behavior of deep subsurface faults. We present our fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) forming schemes to protect sensors and splices. We also present uniaxial load test and post-completion monitoring results for assessing the effects and performance of the protective measures. The uniaxial load test and post-completion monitoring show that FBG sensors are well protected by FRP forming without significant impact on sensor performance itself and that they are successfully installed in deep boreholes. In addition to summarizing our learning from experiences, we also suggest several points for consideration to improve the applicability of FBG sensors in borehole environment of the geotechnical field. The work presents data treatment methods aimed at eliminating the noise in the strain sensor data induced by vibrations of the helicopter blade in flight conditions. The methods can be applied in order to enhance the metrological performance of the helicopter weight estimation system based on the deformation measurement of the main rotor blades. The experimental setup included a composite plate fixed to the vibrating stand on the one end, with six fiber-optic strain sensors attached to its surface. In this work, the procedure of the optimal linear smoothing (POLS) and 3D-invariant methods were used to obtain monotone calibration curves for each detector, thereby making it possible to distinguish the increase of load applied to the free end of the plate with an increment of 10 g. The second method associated with 3D invariants took into account 13 quantitative parameters defined as the combination of different moments and their intercorrelations up to the fourth-order inclusive. These 13 parameters allowed the calculation of the 3D surface that can serve as a specific fingerprint, differentiating one set of initial data from another one. A long-gauge fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor with enhanced strain sensitivity is proposed, which is encapsulated with two T-shaped metal blocks. Its fabrication method is described briefly, and the strain sensitivity can be flexibly adjusted through changing its packaging method. A series of experiments are carried out to study the packaging and its sensing properties. The experimental results show that the strain and temperature sensitivity coefficient of the sensor are three times larger than the common FBG sensors. The linearity coefficients of the FBG sensor are larger than 0.999, and the relative error of the repeatability of all sensor samples is less than 1%. Through the stability test on the actual bridge, it is revealed that the long-term stability of the sensor is excellent, and the maximum error is less than 1.5%. In addition, the proposed FBG strain sensors are used to conduct a shear strengthening experiment on a reinforced concrete (RC) beam to verify its working performance. The paper explores the possibility of using high-resolution fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technology for on-specimen strain measurement in the laboratory. The approach provides a means to assess the surface deformation of the specimen, both the axial and radial, through a chain of FBG sensor (C-FBG), in a basic setup of a uniaxial compression test. The method is cost-effective, straightforward and can be commercialized. Two C-FBG; one was applied directly to the sample (FBGBare), and the other was packaged (FBGPack) for ease of application. The approach measures the local strain with high-resolution and accuracy levels that match up to the existing local strain measuring sensors. The approach enables the evaluation of small-strain properties of the specimen intelligently. The finite element model analysis deployed has proven the adaptability of the technique for measuring material deformation. The adhesive thickness and packaging technique have been shown to influence the sensitivity of the FBG sensors. The FBG (Fiber Bragg grating) sensor is an optical fiber type strain sensor. When a person breathes, strain occurs in the lungs and diaphragm. This was verified using an FBG sensor to which part of the living body this respiratory strain propagates. When measured in the abdomen, the signal waveforms were significantly different between breathing and apnea. The respiratory cycle measured by the temperature sensor attached to the mask and the strain cycle measured by the FBG sensor almost matched. Respiratory strain was measured in the abdomen, chest, and shoulder, and the signal amplitude decreased with distance from the abdomen. In addition, the respiratory rate could be calculated from the measured strain signal. On the other hand, respiratory strain did not propagate to the elbows and wrists, which were off the trunk, and the respiratory time, based on the signal period, could not be calculated at these parts. Therefore, it was shown that respiratory strain propagated in the trunk from the abdomen to the shoulder, but not in the peripheral parts of the elbow and wrist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Weak fiber Bragg gratings (WFBGs) in a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR) sensor offer opportunities to significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and sensitivity of the device. Here, we demonstrate the process of the signal and noise components' formation in the device reflectograms for a Rayleigh scattering phi-OTDR and a WFBG-based OTDR. We theoretically calculated the increase in SNR when using the same optical and electrical components under the same external impacts for both setups. The obtained values are confirmed on experimental installations, demonstrating an improvement in the SNR by about 19 dB at frequencies of 20, 100, and 400 Hz. In this way, the minimum recorded impact (at the threshold SNR = 10) can be reduced from 100 nm per 20 m of fiber to less than 5 nm per 20 m of fiber sensor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current testing methods are capable of measuring strain near the surface on structural parts, for example by using strain gauges. However, stress peaks often occur within the material and can only be approximated. An alternative strain measurement incorporates fibre-optical strain sensors (Fiber Bragg Gratings, FBG) which are able to determine strains within the material. The principle has already been verified by using embedded FBGs in tensile specimens. The transition area between fibre and aluminium, however, is not yet properly investigated. Therefore, strains in tensile specimens containing FBGs were measured by neutron diffraction in gauge volumes of two different sizes around the Bragg grating. As a result, it is possible to identify and decouple elastic and plastic strains affecting the FBGs and to transfer the findings into a fully descriptive FE-model of the strain transition area.We thus accomplished closing the gap between the external load and internal straining obtained from cast-in FBG and generating valuable information about the mechanisms within the strain transition area.It was found that the porosity within the casting has a significant impact on the stiffness of the tensile specimen, the generation of excess microscopic tensions and thus the formation of permanent plastic strains, which are well recognized by the FBG. The knowledge that FBG as internal strain sensors function just as well as common external strain sensors will now allow for the application of FBG in actual structural parts and measurements under real load conditions. The small deformation of the model pile in a pile jacking test makes its accurate measurement very difficult. Based on the installation method of clamping at both ends, a sensitized miniature fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor was developed to measure the pile strain of small-size model piles. This study investigated the working principle of the sensitized miniature FBG sensor and analyzed the strain transfer characteristics of the sensor by calibration test. The lateral resistance and the earth plug resistance of the model pile were measured accurately by the grooves embedded in the outer tube of the double-wall opening model pile and the sensors directly pasted on the surface of the inner tube. The results of this study show that the sensitized miniature FBG strain sensor has the advantages of high sensitivity, strong interference resistance, and high test accuracy. The FBG strain sensor was completely fixed on the pile by clamping supports at both ends, and the strain measured using the FBG strain sensor was found to be consistent with the pile deformation. This paper presents a wearable hand module which was made of five fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor and algorithms to achieve high accuracy even when worn on different hand sizes of users. For real-time calculation with high accuracy, FBG strain sensors move continuously according to the size of the hand and the bending of the joint. Representatively, four algorithms were proposed; point strain (PTS), area summation (AREA), proportional summation (PS), and PS/interference (PS/I or PS/I_ α). For more accurate and efficient assessments, 3D printed hand replica with different finger sizes was adopted and quantitative evaluations were performed for index~little fingers (77 to 117 mm) and thumb (68~78 mm). For index~little fingers, the optimized algorithms were PS and PS/I_ α. For thumb, the optimized algorithms were PS/I_ α and AREA. The average error angle of the wearable hand module was observed to be 0.47 ± 2.51° and mean absolute error (MAE) was achieved at 1.63 ± 1.97°. These results showed that more accurate hand modules than other glove modules applied to different hand sizes can be manufactured using FBG strain sensors which move continuously and algorithms for tracking this movable FBG sensors. Icing detection of composite insulators is essential for the security and stability of power grids. As conventional methods have met difficulties in harsh weather, a 110 kV composite insulator with embedded Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) was proposed for detecting glaze icing in this paper. FBG temperature compensation sensors in ceramic tubes were adopted for simultaneous measurement of icicle loads and temperature. Then, temperature calibration experiments and simulated icicle load experiments were carried out to obtain temperature and icicle load characteristics of FBGs. The results showed that temperature sensitivities of FBG strain sensors and FBG temperature compensation sensors were 18.16 pm/°C, and 13.18 pm/°C, respectively. Besides, wavelength shifts were linearly related to icicle loads within the polar angle range of −60° to 60°, and the load coefficient of FBG facing the icicle was -34.6 pm/N. In addition, the wavelength shift generated by several icicles was equal to the sum of wavelength shifts generated by each icicle within the polar angle range of −15° to 15°. Finally, icicles can cause wavelength shifts of FBGs within a big shed spacing. The paper provides a novel icing detection technology for composite insulators in transmission lines. Photoelectric integrated testing technology was used to study precast piles during pile jacking at the pile–soil interface considering the influence of the earth and pore water pressures on its vertical bearing performance. The low temperature sensitive fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors and miniature silicon piezoresistive sensors were implanted in the model pile to test the changes of earth pressure, pore water pressure and pile axial force of the jacked pile at the pile–soil interface, and the influence of lateral pressure on pile axial force was studied. The test results showed that the nylon rod is feasible as a model pile. The FBG strain sensor had a stable performance and monitored changes in the axial force of the model pile in real time. The miniature earth and pore water pressure sensors were small enough to avoid size effects and accurately measured changes in the earth and pore water pressures during the pile jacking process. During pile jacking, the lateral earth pressure increased gradually in depth, and the lateral earth pressure at the same depth tended to decrease at greater depths. Lateral pressures caused the axial force of the pile to increases by a factor of 1–2, where the maximum was 2.7. Currently available groundwater flow prediction tools and methods are limited by insufficient spatial resolution of subsurface data and the unknown local heterogeneity. In this field study, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were installed in an extraction well field to investigate its potential to measure groundwater flow velocity. Reference in-situ pore pressure and temperature measurements were used to identify possible sources of FBG responses. FBG strain sensors were able to detect soil consolidation caused by groundwater extraction from 250 m distance. The results show that FBG responses were influenced by interface friction between soil and FBG packaging. FBG packaging slipped in soil and the effect was more pronounced during higher groundwater flow around a nearby well. These FBG fibers could be applied for indirect flow monitoring that does not require any tracer and provide real-time and long-term data during regular operation of extraction wells. In this paper, a soft fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor was constructed of a rubber strip, FBGs and steel plates, which exhibits the advantages of high precision and a small size. A series of FBGs was uniformly pasted on a flexible rubber strip which can monitor the slope deformation by measuring the bending deformation of the rubber strip. Most notably, this sensor can be used to monitor horizontal displacement in the subsurface of the slope model. The relationships among the bending angle of the rubber strip, the strain of the rubber strip, and the subsurface deformation of the slope model were established. In addition, the subsurface deformation of the slope model can be obtained by the FBG strain sensor monitoring. Since a rigid-flexible structure was formed by uniformly pasting a series of steel plates on the other side of the rubber strip, the sensitivity of the FBG strain sensor was improved to be 1.5425 nm/°. The measurement results verify that the FBG strain sensor shows good performance, and the model test results demonstrate that the FBG strain sensor can be used for monitoring the subsurface deformation of the slope model. For the purpose of improving the sensitivity of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based strain sensor. A novel FBG-based strain sensor with high sensibility was designed by means of a flexible hinge bridge displacement magnification structure. This sensor can be used to accurately measure the strain of a mechanical structure surface. In this paper, the strain sensitization amplification factor of the sensor was calculated by using the flexible matrix method and the strain energy theory. The magnification had been verified by using simulation analysis and experimental results, and the error between theoretical calculation and simulation analysis was less than 7%. The result shows that the strain sensitivity of the sensor is 10.84 pm/με, which is about 10 times to that of the bare FBG sensor. This paper investigates the problem of an optimal sensor placement for better shape deformation sensing of a new antenna structure with embedded or attached Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors. In this paper, the deformation shape of the antenna structure is reconstructed using a strain–displacement transformation, according to the measured discrete strain data from limited FBG strain sensors. Moreover, a two-stage sensor placement method is proposed using a derived relative reconstruction error equation. In this method, the initial sensor locations are determined using the principal component analysis based on orthogonal trigonometric (i.e., QR) decomposition, and then a new location is sequentially added into the initial sensor locations one by one by minimizing the relative reconstruction error considering information redundancy. The numerical simulations are conducted, and the comparisons show that the proposed method is advantageous in terms of the sensor distribution and computational cost. Experimental validation is performed using an antenna experimental platform equipped with an optimal FBG strain sensor configuration, and the reconstruction results show good agreements with those measured directly from displacement sensors. The proposed method has a large potential for the strain sensor placement of complex structures, and the proposed antenna structure with FBG strain sensors can be applied to the future wing-skin antenna or flexible space-based antenna. This work reports on the use of an in-series silica and polymer fiber Bragg grating (FBG) to control the FBG strain sensitivities and enhance in the case of the polymer fiber Bragg grating (PFBG). Due to differences in the Young’s Modulus of the fibers employed, the amount of strain is unequally distributed in each fiber section. By acting on the silica fiber length, it was possible to control the strain sensitivity of the two FBGs, allowing a polymer FBG strain sensitivity much higher than the one found in the elementary fiber to be obtained. The influence of the diameter of the polymer fiber on the strain sensitivities of the FBGs was also investigated. A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based strain sensor with a high-sensitivity is presented in this paper. The proposed FBG-based strain sensor enhances sensitivity by pasting the FBG on a substrate with a lever structure. This typical mechanical configuration mechanically amplifies the strain of the FBG to enhance overall sensitivity. As this mechanical configuration has a high stiffness, the proposed sensor can achieve a high resonant frequency and a wide dynamic working range. The sensing principle is presented, and the corresponding theoretical model is derived and validated. Experimental results demonstrate that the developed FBG-based strain sensor achieves an enhanced strain sensitivity of 6.2 pm/με, which is consistent with the theoretical analysis result. The strain sensitivity of the developed sensor is 5.2 times of the strain sensitivity of a bare fiber Bragg grating strain sensor. The dynamic characteristics of this sensor are investigated through the finite element method (FEM) and experimental tests. The developed sensor exhibits an excellent strain-sensitivity-enhancing property in a wide frequency range.
