The fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) records changes in the graph of fetal cardiac action potential during conduction, reflecting the developmental status of the fetus in utero and its physiological cardiac activity. Morphological alterations in the FECG can indicate intrauterine hypoxia, fetal distress, and neonatal asphyxia early on, enhancing maternal and fetal safety through prompt clinical intervention, thereby reducing neonatal morbidity and mortality. To reconstruct FECG signals with clear morphological information, this paper proposes a novel deep learning model, CBLS-CycleGAN. The model's generator combines spatial features extracted by the CNN with temporal features extracted by the BiLSTM network, thus ensuring that the reconstructed signals possess combined features with spatial and temporal dependencies. The model's discriminator utilizes PatchGAN, employing small segments of the signal as discriminative inputs to concentrate the training process on capturing signal details. Evaluating the model using two real FECG signal databases, namely "Abdominal and Direct Fetal ECG Database" and "Fetal Electrocardiograms, Direct and Abdominal with Reference Heartbeat Annotations", resulted in a mean MSE and MAE of 0.019 and 0.006, respectively. It detects the FQRS compound wave with a sensitivity, positive predictive value, and F1 of 99.51%, 99.57%, and 99.54%, respectively. This paper's model effectively preserves the morphological information of FECG signals, capturing not only the FQRS compound wave but also the fetal P-wave, T-wave, P-R interval, and ST segment information, providing clinicians with crucial diagnostic insights and a scientific foundation for developing rational treatment protocols. The main purpose of this paper is to provide information on how to create a convolutional neural network (CNN) for extracting features from EEG signals. Our task was to understand the primary aspects of creating and fine-tuning CNNs for various application scenarios. We considered the characteristics of EEG signals, coupled with an exploration of various signal processing and data preparation techniques. These techniques include noise reduction, filtering, encoding, decoding, and dimension reduction, among others. In addition, we conduct an in-depth analysis of well-known CNN architectures, categorizing them into four distinct groups: standard implementation, recurrent convolutional, decoder architecture, and combined architecture. This paper further offers a comprehensive evaluation of these architectures, covering accuracy metrics, hyperparameters, and an appendix that contains a table outlining the parameters of commonly used CNN architectures for feature extraction from EEG signals. Preprocessing plays a key role in Raman spectral analysis. However, classical preprocessing algorithms often have issues with reducing Raman peak intensities and changing the peak shape when processing spectra. This paper introduces a unified solution for preprocessing based on a convolutional autoencoder to enhance Raman spectroscopy data. One is a denoising algorithm that uses a convolutional denoising autoencoder (CDAE model), and the other is a baseline correction algorithm based on a convolutional autoencoder (CAE+ model). The CDAE model incorporates two additional convolutional layers in its bottleneck layer for enhanced noise reduction. The CAE+ model not only adds convolutional layers at the bottleneck but also includes a comparison function after the decoding for effective baseline correction. The proposed models were validated using both simulated spectra and experimental spectra measured with a Raman spectrometer system. Comparing their performance with that of traditional signal processing techniques, the results of the CDAE-CAE+ model show improvements in noise reduction and Raman peak preservation. UAV communications have seen a rapid rise in the last few years. The drone class of UAV has particularly become more widespread around the world, and illicit behavior using drones has become a problem. Therefore, localization, tracking, and even taking control of drones have also gained interest. Knowing the frequency of a target signal, its position can be determined (as the angle of arrival with respect to a fixed receiver point) using radio frequency-based localization techniques. One such technique is represented by the subspace-based algorithms that offer highly accurate results. This paper presents the implementation of the MUSIC algorithm on an SDR-based system using a uniform circular antenna array and its experimental evaluation in relevant outdoor environments for drone localization. The results show the capability of the system to indicate the AoA of the target signal. The results are compared with the actual direction computed from the log files of the drone application and validated with a professional direction-finding solution (i.e., Narda SignalShark equipped with the automatic direction-finding antenna). Online monitoring and real-time feedback on inclusions in molten metal are essential for metal quality control. However, existing methods for detecting aluminum melt inclusions face challenges, including interference, prolonged processing times, and latency. This paper presents the design and development of an online monitoring system for molten metal inclusions. Initially, the system facilitates real-time adjustment of signal acquisition parameters through a multiplexer. Subsequently, it employs a detection algorithm capable of swiftly extracting pulse peaks, with this task integrated into our proprietary host computer software to ensure timely detection and data visualization. Ultimately, we developed a monitoring device integrated with this online monitoring system, enabling the online monitoring of the aluminum alloy filtration process. Our findings indicate that the system can accurately measure the size and concentration of inclusions during the filtration process in real time, offering enhanced detection speed and stability compared to the industrial LiMCA CM (liquid metal cleanliness analyzer continuous monitoring) standard. Furthermore, our evaluation of the filtration process demonstrates that the effectiveness of filtration significantly improves with the increase in inclusion sizes, and the synergistic effect of combining CFF (ceramic foam filter) and MCF (metallics cartridge filter) filtration methods exceeds the performance of the CFF method alone. As the number of electronic gadgets in our daily lives is increasing and most of them require some kind of human interaction, this demands innovative, convenient input methods. There are limitations to state-of-the-art (SotA) ultrasound-based hand gesture recognition (HGR) systems in terms of robustness and accuracy. This research presents a novel machine learning (ML)-based end-to-end solution for hand gesture recognition with low-cost micro-electromechanical (MEMS) system ultrasonic transducers. In contrast to prior methods, our ML model processes the raw echo samples directly instead of using pre-processed data. Consequently, the processing flow presented in this work leaves it to the ML model to extract the important information from the echo data. The success of this approach is demonstrated as follows. Four MEMS ultrasonic transducers are placed in three different geometrical arrangements. For each arrangement, different types of ML models are optimized and benchmarked on datasets acquired with the presented custom hardware (HW): convolutional neural networks (CNNs), gated recurrent units (GRUs), long short-term memory (LSTM), vision transformer (ViT), and cross-attention multi-scale vision transformer (CrossViT). The three last-mentioned ML models reached more than 88% accuracy. The most important innovation described in this research paper is that we were able to demonstrate that little pre-processing is necessary to obtain high accuracy in ultrasonic HGR for several arrangements of cost-effective and low-power MEMS ultrasonic transducer arrays. Even the computationally intensive Fourier transform can be omitted. The presented approach is further compared to HGR systems using other sensor types such as vision, WiFi, radar, and state-of-the-art ultrasound-based HGR systems. To address the challenge of accurately locating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in situations where radar tracking is not feasible and visual observation is difficult, this paper proposes an innovative acoustic source localization method based on improved Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) within an adaptive frequency window. In this study, the collected flight signals of UAVs undergo smoothing filtering. Additionally, Robust Empirical Mode Decomposition (REMD) is applied to decompose the signals into Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) components for spectrum analysis. We introduce a sliding frequency window with adjustable bandwidth, which is automatically determined using a Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) with a sliding index. This window is used to lock and extract specific frequencies from the IMFs. Based on predefined criteria, the extracted IMF components are reconstructed, and trigger signal times are analyzed and recorded from these reconstructed IMFs. The time differences between sensor receptions are then calculated. Furthermore, this study introduces the Chan–Taylor localization algorithm based on weighted least squares. This advanced algorithm takes sensor time delay parameters as input and solves a set of nonlinear equations to determine the target's location. Simulations and real-world signal tests are used to validate the robustness and performance of the proposed method. The results indicate that the localization error remains below 5% within a 15 m × 15 m measurement area. This provides an efficient and real-time method for detecting the location of small UAVs. This paper details the design and implementation of a harmonic frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system, specialized in detecting harmonic tags and achieving precise range estimation. Operating within the 2.4–2.5 GHz frequency range for the forward channel and 4.8–5.0 GHz for the backward channel, this study delves into the various challenges faced during the system's realization. These challenges include selecting appropriate components, calibrating the system, processing signals, and integrating the system components. In addition, we introduce a single-layer passive harmonic tag, developed specifically for assessing the system, and provide an in-depth theoretical analysis and simulation results. Notably, the system is characterized by its low power consumption, making it particularly suitable for short-range applications. The system's efficacy is further validated through experimental evaluations in a real-world indoor environment across multiple tag positions. Due to their user-friendliness and reliability, biometric systems have taken a central role in everyday digital identity management for all kinds of private, financial and governmental applications with increasing security requirements. A central security aspect of unsupervised biometric authentication systems is the presentation attack detection (PAD) mechanism, which defines the robustness to fake or altered biometric features. Artifacts like photos, artificial fingers, face masks and fake iris contact lenses are a general security threat for all biometric modalities. The Biometric Evaluation Center of the Institute of Safety and Security Research (ISF) at the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg has specialized in the development of a near-infrared (NIR)-based contact-less detection technology that can distinguish between human skin and most artifact materials. This technology is highly adaptable and has already been successfully integrated into fingerprint scanners, face recognition devices and hand vein scanners. In this work, we introduce a cutting-edge, miniaturized near-infrared presentation attack detection (NIR-PAD) device. It includes an innovative signal processing chain and an integrated distance measurement feature to boost both reliability and resilience. We detail the device's modular configuration and conceptual decisions, highlighting its suitability as a versatile platform for sensor fusion and seamless integration into future biometric systems. Accurately predicting the changes in turbine vibration trends is a key part of the operational condition maintenance of hydropower units, which is of great significance for improving both the operational condition and operational efficiency of hydropower plants. In this paper, we propose a multistep prediction model for the vibration trend of a hydropower unit. This model is based on the theoretical principles of signal processing and machine learning, incorporating variational mode decomposition (VMD), stochastic configuration networks (SCNs), and the recursive strategy. Firstly, in view of the severe fluctuations of the vibration signal of the unit, this paper decomposes the unit vibration data into intrinsic mode function (IMF) components of different frequencies by VMD, which effectively alleviates the instability of the vibration trend. Secondly, an SCN model is used to predict different IMF components. Then, the predicted values of all the IMF components are superimposed to form the prediction results. Finally, according to the recursive strategy, a multistep prediction model of the HGU's vibration trends is constructed by adding new input variables to the prediction results. This model is applied to the prediction of vibration data from different components of a unit, and the experimental results show that the proposed multistep prediction model can accurately predict the vibration trend of the unit. In recent years, the application of deep learning models for underwater target recognition has become a popular trend. Most of these are pure 1D models used for processing time-domain signals or pure 2D models used for processing time-frequency spectra. In this paper, a recent temporal 2D modeling method is introduced into the construction of ship radiation noise classification models, combining 1D and 2D. This method is based on the periodic characteristics of time-domain signals, shaping them into 2D signals and discovering long-term correlations between sampling points through 2D convolution to compensate for the limitations of 1D convolution. Integrating this method with the current state-of-the-art model structure and using samples from the Deepship database for network training and testing, it was found that this method could further improve the accuracy (0.9%) and reduce the parameter count (30%), providing a new option for model construction and optimization. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of training models using time-domain signals or time-frequency representations has been compared, finding that the model based on time-domain signals is more sensitive and has a smaller storage footprint (reduced to 30%), whereas the model based on time-frequency representation can achieve higher accuracy (1–2%). LiDAR has high accuracy and resolution and is widely used in various fields. In particular, phase-modulated continuous-wave (PhMCW) LiDAR has merits such as low power, high precision, and no need for laser frequency modulation. However, with decreasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the noise on the signal waveform becomes so severe that the current methods to extract the time-of-flight are no longer feasible. In this paper, a novel method that uses deep neural networks to measure the pulse width is proposed. The effects of distance resolution and SNR on the performance are explored. Recognition accuracy reaches 81.4% at a 0.1 m distance resolution and the SNR is as low as 2. We simulate a scene that contains a vehicle, a tree, a house, and a background located up to 6 m away. The reconstructed point cloud has good fidelity, the object contours are clear, and the features are restored. More precisely, the three distances are 4.73 cm, 6.00 cm, and 7.19 cm, respectively, showing that the performance of the proposed method is excellent. The accuracy of ultrasonic flowmeter time delay measurement is directly affected by the processing method of the ultrasonic echo signal. This paper proposes a method for estimating the time delay of the ultrasonic gas flowmeter based on the Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD)–Hilbert Spectrum and Cross-Correlation (CC). The method improves the accuracy of the ultrasonic gas flowmeter by enhancing the quality of the echo signal. To denoise forward and reverse ultrasonic echo signals collected at various wind speeds, a Butterworth filter is initially used. The ultrasonic echo signals are then analyzed by Empirical Mode De-composition (EMD) and VMD analysis to obtain the Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) containing distinct center frequencies, respectively. The Hilbert spectrum time–frequency diagram is used to evaluate the results of the VMD and EMD decompositions. It is found that the IMF decomposed by VMD has a better filtering performance and better anti-interference performance. Therefore, the IMF with a better effect is selected for signal reconstruction. The ultrasonic time delay is then calculated using the Cross-Correlation algorithm. The self-developed ultrasonic gas flowmeter was tested on the experimental platform of the gas flow standard devices using this signal processing method. The results show a maximum indication error of 0.84% within the flow range of 60–606 m3/h, with a repeatability of no more than 0.29%. This paper presents the design, proof-of-concept implementation, and preliminary performance assessment of an affordable real-time High-Sensitivity (HS) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver. Specifically tailored to capture and track weak Galileo E1b/c signals, this receiver aims to support research endeavors focused on advancing GNSS signal processing algorithms, particularly in scenarios characterized by pronounced signal attenuation. Leveraging System-on-Chip Field-Programmable Gate Array (SoC-FPGA) technology, this design merges the adaptability of Software Defined Radio (SDR) concepts with the the robust hardware processing capabilities of FPGAs. This innovative approach enhances power efficiency compared to conventional designs relying on general-purpose processors, thereby facilitating the development of embedded software-defined receivers. Within this architecture, we implemented a modular GNSS baseband processing engine, offering a versatile platform for the integration of novel algorithms. The proposed receiver undergoes testing with live signals, showcasing its capability to process GNSS signals even in challenging scenarios with a carrier-to-noise density ratio ( C / N 0 ) as low as 20 dB-Hz, while delivering navigation solutions. This work contributes to the advancement of low-cost, high-sensitivity GNSS receivers, providing a valuable tool for researchers engaged in the development, testing, and validation of experimental GNSS signal processing techniques. Many concepts for future generations of wireless communication systems use coherent processing of signals from many distributed antennas. The aim is to improve communication reliability, capacity, and energy efficiency and provide possibilities for new applications through integrated communication and sensing. The large bandwidths available in the higher bands have inspired much work regarding sensing in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) and sub-THz bands; however, the sub-6 GHz cellular bands will still be the main provider of wide cellular coverage due to the more favorable propagation conditions. In this paper, we present a measurement system and results of sub-6 GHz distributed multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) measurements performed in an industrial environment. From the measurements, we evaluated the diversity for both large-scale and small-scale fading and characterized the link reliability. We also analyzed the possibility of multistatic sensing and positioning of users in the environment, with the initial results showing a mean-square error below 20  c m on the estimated position. Sparse arrays are widely employed in array signal processing due to their obvious advantages in array element distribution and uniform degrees of freedom (uDOFs). In this paper, a generalized augmented multi-subarray nested array (GAMSNA-I) and its variant, GAMSNA-II are proposed, with the objective of increasing uDOFs and reducing mutual coupling. Based on two subarrays of the prototype nested array (NA), GAMSNA-I is constructed by reconfiguring the dense uniform linear array (ULA) and forward-shifting the sparse ULA. GAMSNA-II is obtained by sparsifying the dense part of GAMSNA-I, ensuring constant uDOFs while further reducing mutual coupling. Subsequently, the closed-form expression for the uDOFs of GAMSNA-I with an arbitrary number of sensors is derived, and the proof is provided that the uDOFs of GAMSNA-II remain unchanged relative to that of GAMSNA-I. Compared to some existing array configurations, both GAMSNA-I and GAMSNA-II exhibit improved uDOFs, with GAMSNA-II achieving lower mutual coupling. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for edge-preserving filtering with multiple guidance images, so-called multilateral filtering. Multimodal signal processing for sensor fusion is increasingly important in image sensing. Edge-preserving filtering is available for various sensor fusion applications, such as estimating scene properties and refining inverse-rendered images. The main application is joint edge-preserving filtering, which can preferably reflect the edge information of a guidance image from an additional sensor. The drawback of edge-preserving filtering lies in its long computational time; thus, many acceleration methods have been proposed. However, most accelerated filtering cannot handle multiple guidance information well, although the multiple guidance information provides us with various benefits. Therefore, we extend the efficient edge-preserving filters so that they can use additional multiple guidance images. Our algorithm, named decomposes multilateral filtering (DMF), can extend the efficient filtering methods to the multilateral filtering method, which decomposes the filter into a set of constant-time filtering. This paper describes design, theoretical analysis, and experimental evaluation of a π-Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating (π-PSFBG) inscribed in the standard telecom fiber for slow light generation. At first, the grating was designed for its use in the reflection mode with a central wavelength of 1552 nm and a pass band width of less than 100 pm. The impact of fabrication imperfections was experimentally investigated and compared to model predictions. The optical spectra obtained experimentally show that the spectral region used for slow light generation is narrower (less than 10 pm), thus allowing for too-low levels of slow light optical-output power. In the next step, the optimization of the grating design was conducted to account for fabrication errors, to improve the grating's spectral behavior and its temporal performance, and to widen the spectral interval for slow light generation in the grating's transmission mode. The targeted central wavelength was 1553 nm. The π-PSFBG was then commercially fabricated, and the achieved parameters were experimentally investigated. For the region of (1551–1554) nm, a 15-fold increase in the grating's pass band width was achieved. We have shown that a pair of retarded optical pulses were generated. The measured group delay was found to be ~10.5 ps (compared to 19 ps predicted by the model). The π-PSFBG operating in its transmission mode has the potential to operate as tunable delay line for applications in RF photonics, ultra-fast signal processing, and optical communications, where tunable high precision delay lines are highly desirable. Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) is a task of fine-grained sentiment analysis that aims to determine the sentiment of a given target. With the increased prevalence of smart devices and social media, diverse data modalities have become more abundant. This fuels interest in multimodal ABSA (MABSA). However, most existing methods for MABSA prioritize analyzing the relationship between aspect–text and aspect–image, overlooking the semantic gap between text and image representations. Moreover, they neglect the rich information in external knowledge, e.g., image captions. To address these limitations, in this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical framework for MABSA, known as HF-EKCL, which also offers perspectives on sensor development within the context of sentiment analysis. Specifically, we generate captions for images to supplement the textual and visual features. The multi-head cross-attention mechanism and graph attention neural network are utilized to capture the interactions between modalities. This enables the construction of multi-level aspect fusion features that incorporate element-level and structure-level information. Furthermore, for this paper, we integrated modality-based and label-based contrastive learning methods into our framework, making the model learn shared features that are relevant to the sentiment of corresponding words in multimodal data. It is known that X-ray and gamma-ray pulsars can only be observed by spacecraft because signals from these pulsars are impossible to be detected on the Earth's surface due to their strong absorption by the Earth's atmosphere. The article is devoted to the theoretical aspects regarding the development of an autonomous radio navigation system for transport with a small receiving antenna, using radio signals from pulsars, similar to navigation systems for space navigation. Like GNSS systems (X-ray and radio), they use signals from four suitable pulsars to position the object. These radio pulsars (out of 50) are not uniformly distributed but are grouped in certain directions (at least 6 clusters can be determined). When using small antennas (with an area of up to tens of square meters) for pulsar navigation, the energy of the pulsar signals received within a few minutes is extremely insufficient to obtain the required level of SNR at the output of the receiver to form TOA estimation, ensuring positioning accuracy up to tens of kilometers. This is one of the scientific tasks that is solved in the paper by studying the relationship between the SNR of the receiver output, which depends on the size of the antenna, the type of signal processing, and the magnitude of the TOA accuracy estimate. The second scientific task that is solved in the paper is the adaptation of all the possible approaches and algorithms suggested in the statistical theory of radars in the suggested signal algorithm for antenna processing and to evaluate the parameters of the TOA and DS pulsar signals, in order to increase the SNR ratio at the receiver output, while preserving the dimensions of the antenna. In this paper, the functional structure of signal processing in a pulsar transport navigation system is proposed, and the choice of the observed second and millisecond pulsars for obtaining a more accurate TOA estimate is discussed. The proposed estimates of positioning accuracy (TOA only, no phase) in an autonomous pulsar vehicle navigation system would only be suitable for the navigation of large vehicles (sea, air, or land) that do not require accurate navigation at sea, air, or desert. With the wide application of direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signals, the comprehensive performance of DSSS communication systems has been continuously improved, making the electronic reconnaissance link in communication countermeasures more difficult. Electronic reconnaissance technology, as the fundamental means of modern electronic warfare, mainly includes signal detection, recognition, and parameter estimation. At present, research on DSSS detection algorithms is mostly based on the correlation characteristics of DSSS signals, and autocorrelation algorithm is the most mature and widely used method in practical engineering. With the continuous development of deep learning, deep-learning-based methods have gradually been introduced to replace traditional algorithms in the field of signal processing. This paper proposes a spread spectrum signal detection method based on convolutional neural network (CNN). Through experimental analysis, the detection performance of the CNN model proposed in this paper on DSSS signals in various situations has been compared and analyzed with traditional autocorrelation detection methods for different signal-to-noise ratios. The experiments verified the estimation performance of the model in this paper under different signal-to-noise ratios, different spreading code lengths, different spreading code types, and different modulation methods and compared it with the autocorrelation detection algorithm. It was found that the detection performance of the model in this paper was higher than that of the autocorrelation detection method, and the overall performance was improved by 4 dB. This paper presents reported machine learning approaches in the field of Brillouin distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOSs). The increasing popularity of Brillouin DFOSs stems from their capability to continuously monitor temperature and strain along kilometer-long optical fibers, rendering them attractive for industrial applications, such as the structural health monitoring of large civil infrastructures and pipelines. In recent years, machine learning has been integrated into the Brillouin DFOS signal processing, resulting in fast and enhanced temperature, strain, and humidity measurements without increasing the system's cost. Machine learning has also contributed to enhanced spatial resolution in Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) systems and shorter measurement times in Brillouin optical frequency domain analysis (BOFDA) systems. Due to its low stiffness, the boring bar used in deep-hole-boring is prone to violent vibration during the cutting process. It is often inaccurate and inefficient to judge the vibration state of the boring bar through artificial experience. To detect the change of the vibration state of the boring bar over time, guide the adjustment of the processing parameters, and avoid wastage of the workpiece and the loss of equipment, it is particularly important to intelligently monitor the vibration state of the boring bar during processing. In this paper, the boring bar is taken as the research object, and an intelligent monitoring technology of the boring bar's vibration state based on deep learning is proposed. Based on grouping convolution, channel shuffle, and BiLSTM, a shuffle-BiLSTM NET model is constructed, which is both lightweight and has a high classification accuracy. The boring experiment platform is built, and 192 groups of cutting experiments are carried out. The three-way acceleration and sound pressure signals are collected, and the signals are processed by smoothed pseudo-Wigner–Ville distribution. The original signals are transformed into a 256 × 256 × 3 matrix obtained by a two-dimensional time–frequency spectrum diagram. The matrix is input into the model to recognize the boring bar's vibration state. The final classification accuracy is 91.2%. With the rapid development of Lidar technology, the use of Lidar for underwater terrain detection has become feasible. There is still a challenge in the process of signal resolution: the underwater laser echo signal is different to propagating in the air, and it is easy to produce weak waves and superimposed waves. However, existing waveform decomposition methods are not effective in processing these waveform signals, and the underwater waveform signal cannot be correctly decomposed, resulting in subsequent data-processing errors. To address these issues, this study used a drone equipped with a 532 nm laser to detect a pond as the study background. This paper proposes an improved inflection point selection decomposition method to estimate the parameter. By comparing it with other decomposition methods, we found that the RMSE is 2.544 and R2 is 0.995975, which is more stable and accurate. After estimating the parameters, this study used oscillating particle swarm optimization (OPSO) and the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm (LM) to optimize the estimated parameters; the final results show that the method in this paper is closer to the original waveform. In order to verify the processing effect of the method on complex waveform, this paper decomposes and optimizes the simulated complex waveforms; the final RMSE is 0.0016, R2 is 1, and the Gaussian component after decomposition can fully represent the original waveform. This paper presents a novel deep-learning (DL)-based approach for classifying digitally modulated signals, which involves the use of capsule networks (CAPs) together with the cyclic cumulant (CC) features of the signals. These were blindly estimated using cyclostationary signal processing (CSP) and were then input into the CAP for training and classification. The classification performance and the generalization abilities of the proposed approach were tested using two distinct datasets that contained the same types of digitally modulated signals, but had distinct generation parameters. The results showed that the classification of digitally modulated signals using CAPs and CCs proposed in the paper outperformed alternative approaches for classifying digitally modulated signals that included conventional classifiers that employed CSP-based techniques, as well as alternative DL-based classifiers that used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or residual networks (RESNETs) with the in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) data used for training and classification. Asphalt mixes comprise aggregates, additives and bitumen. The aggregates are of varying sizes, and the finest category, referred to as sands, encompasses the so-called filler particles present in the mixture, which are smaller than 0.063 mm. As part of the H2020 CAPRI project, the authors present a prototype for measuring filler flow, through vibration analysis. The vibrations are generated by the filler particles crashing to a slim steel bar capable of withstanding the challenging conditions of temperature and pressure within the aspiration pipe of an industrial baghouse. This paper presents a prototype developed to address the need for quantifying the amount of filler in cold aggregates, considering the unavailability of commercially viable sensors suitable for the conditions encountered during asphalt mix production. In laboratory settings, the prototype simulates the aspiration process of a baghouse in an asphalt plant, accurately reproducing particle concentration and mass flow conditions. The experiments performed demonstrate that an accelerometer positioned outside the pipe can replicate the filler flow within the pipe, even when the filler aspiration conditions differ. The obtained results enable extrapolation from the laboratory model to a real-world baghouse model, making it applicable to various aspiration processes, particularly those involving baghouses. Acoustic vector sensor (AVS) is a kind of sensor widely used in underwater detection. Traditional methods use the covariance matrix of the received signal to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DOA), which not only loses the timing structure of the signal but also has the problem of weak anti-noise ability. Therefore, this paper proposes two DOA estimation methods for underwater AVS arrays, one based on a long short-term memory network and attention mechanism (LSTM-ATT), and the other based on Transformer. These two methods can capture the contextual information of sequence signals and extract features with important semantic information. The simulation results show that the two proposed methods perform much better than the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method, especially in the case of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the DOA estimation accuracy has been greatly improved. The accuracy of the DOA estimation method based on Transformer is comparable to that of the DOA estimation method based on LSTM-ATT, but the computational efficiency is obviously better than that of the DOA estimation method based on LSTM-ATT. In bio-signal denoising, current methods reported in the literature consider purely simulated environments, requiring high computational powers and signal processing algorithms that may introduce signal distortion. To achieve an efficient noise reduction, such methods require previous knowledge of the noise signals or to have certain periodicity and stability, making the noise estimation difficult to predict. In this paper, we solve these challenges through the development of an experimental method applied to bio-signal denoising using a combined approach. This is based on the implementation of unconventional electric field sensors used for creating a noise replica required to obtain the ideal Wiener filter transfer function and achieve further noise reduction. This work aims to investigate the suitability of the proposed approach for real-time noise reduction affecting bio-signal recordings. The experimental evaluation presented here considers two scenarios: (a) human bio-signals trials including electrocardiogram, electromyogram and electrooculogram; and (b) bio-signal recordings from the MIT-MIH arrhythmia database. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using qualitative criteria (i.e., power spectral density) and quantitative criteria (i.e., signal-to-noise ratio and mean square error) followed by a comparison between the proposed methodology and state of the art denoising methods. The results indicate that the combined approach proposed in this paper can be used for noise reduction in electrocardiogram, electromyogram and electrooculogram signals, achieving noise attenuation levels of 26.4 dB, 21.2 dB and 40.8 dB, respectively. Digital twins play a significant role in Industry 4.0, offering the potential to revolutionize machinery maintenance. In this paper, we introduce a new digital twin designed to address the open problem of predicting gear root crack propagation. This digital twin uses signal processing and model fitting to continuously monitor the condition of the root crack and successfully estimate the remaining time until immediate maintenance is required for the physical asset. The functionality of this new digital twin is demonstrated through the experimental data obtained from a planetary gear, where comparisons are made between the actual and estimated severity of the fault, as well as the remaining time until maintenance. This paper presents a low-voltage low-power chopper-stabilized differential difference amplifier (DDA) realized using 40 nm CMOS technology. Operating with a supply voltage of 0.5 V, a three-stage DDA has been employed to achieve an open-loop gain of 89 dB, while consuming just 0.74 μW of power. The proposed DDA incorporates feed-forward frequency compensation and a Type II compensator to achieve pole-zero cancellation and damping factor control. The DDA has a unity-gain bandwidth (UGB) of 170 kHz, a phase margin (PM) of 63.98°, and a common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of up to 100 dB. This circuit can effectively drive a 50 pF capacitor in parallel with a 300 kΩ resistor. The use of the chopper stabilization technique effectively mitigates the offset and 1/f noise. The chopping frequency of the chopper modulator is 5 kHz. The input noise is 245 nV/sqrt (Hz) at 1 kHz, and the input-referred offset under Monte Carlo cases is only 0.26 mV. Such a low-voltage chopper-stabilized DDA will be very useful for analog signal processing applications. Compared to the reported chopper DDA counterparts, the proposed DDA is regarded as that with one of the lowest supply voltages. This paper presents a new self-clocked time-to-digital conversion method based on a binary successive approximation (SA) algorithm. Its novelty consists in combining fully clockless operation with direct conversion of the measured time interval. The lack of any reference clock makes the presented method potentially predisposed to low-power solutions. Furthermore, its circuit representation is extremely simple, thereby the ability to direct conversion of time intervals is not burdened by a significant amount of components. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) altimeters can achieve higher spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than conventional altimeters by Doppler beam sharpening or focused SAR imaging methods. To improve the estimation accuracy of waveform re-tracking, several average echo power models for SAR altimetry have been proposed in previous works. However, these models were mainly proposed for satellite altimeters and are not applicable to high-mobility platforms such as aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and missiles, which may have a large antenna mis-pointing angle and significant vertical movement. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-analytical waveform model and signal processing method for SAR altimeters with vertical movement and large antenna mis-pointing angles. A new semi-analytical expression that can be numerically computed for the flat pulse response (FSIR) is proposed. The 2D delay–Doppler map is then obtained by numerical computation of the convolution between the proposed analytical function, the probability density function, and the time/frequency point target response of the radar. A novel delay compensation method based on sinc interpolation for SAR altimeters with vertical movement is proposed to obtain the multilook echo, which can optimally handle non-integer delays and maintain signal frequency characteristics. In addition, a height estimation method based on least squares (LS) estimation is proposed. The LS estimator does not have an analytical solution, and requires iterative solving through gradient descent. We evaluate the performance of the proposed estimation strategy using simulated data for typical airborne scenarios. When the mis-pointing angles are within 10 degrees, the normalized quadratic error (NQE) of the proposed model is less than 10−10 and the RMSE of τ obtained by the re-tracking method fitted by the proposed model is less than 0.2 m, which indicates the high applicability of the model and accuracy of the re-tracking method. This paper proposes a fast direction of arrival (DOA) estimation method based on positive incremental modified Cholesky decomposition atomic norm minimization (PI-CANM) for augmented coprime array sensors. The approach incorporates coprime sampling on the augmented array to generate a non-uniform, discontinuous virtual array. It then utilizes interpolation to convert this into a uniform, continuous virtual array. Based on this, the problem of DOA estimation is equivalently formulated as a gridless optimization problem, which is solved via atomic norm minimization to reconstruct a Hermitian Toeplitz covariance matrix. Furthermore, by positive incremental modified Cholesky decomposition, the covariance matrix is transformed from positive semi-definite to positive definite, which simplifies the constraint of optimization problem and reduces the complexity of the solution. Finally, the Multiple Signal Classification method is utilized to carry out statistical signal processing on the reconstructed covariance matrix, yielding initial DOA angle estimates. Experimental outcomes highlight that the PI-CANM algorithm surpasses other algorithms in estimation accuracy, demonstrating stability in difficult circumstances such as low signal-to-noise ratios and limited snapshots. JPEG is the international standard for still image encoding and is the most widely used compression algorithm because of its simple encoding process and low computational complexity. Recently, many methods have been developed to improve the quality of JPEG images by using deep learning. However, these methods require the use of high-performance devices since they need to perform neural network computation for decoding images. In this paper, we propose a method to generate high-quality images using deep learning without changing the decoding algorithm. The key idea is to reduce and smooth colors and gradient regions in the original images before JPEG compression. The reduction and smoothing can suppress red block noise and pseudo-contour in the compressed images. Furthermore, high-performance devices are unnecessary for decoding. The proposed method consists of two components: a color transformation network using deep learning and a pseudo-contour suppression model using signal processing. Artificial intelligence (AI) radar technology offers several advantages over other technologies, including low cost, privacy assurance, high accuracy, and environmental resilience. One challenge faced by AI radar technology is the high cost of equipment and the lack of radar datasets for deep-learning model training. Moreover, conventional radar signal processing methods have the obstacles of poor resolution or complex computation. Therefore, this paper discusses an innovative approach in the integration of radar technology and machine learning for effective surveillance systems that can surpass the aforementioned limitations. This approach is detailed into three steps: signal acquisition, signal processing, and feature-based classification. A hardware prototype of the signal acquisition circuitry was designed for a Continuous Wave (CW) K-24 GHz frequency band radar sensor. The collected radar motion data was categorized into non-human motion, human walking, and human walking without arm swing. Three signal processing techniques, namely short-time Fourier transform (STFT), mel spectrogram, and mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), were employed. The latter two are typically used for audio processing, but in this study, they were proposed to obtain micro-Doppler spectrograms for all motion data. The obtained micro-Doppler spectrograms were then fed to a simplified 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) architecture for feature extraction and classification. Additionally, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and 1D CNN models were implemented for comparative analysis on various aspects. The experimental results demonstrated that the 2D CNN model trained on the MFCC feature outperformed the other two methods. In this paper, we propose a novel low-complexity hand gesture recognition framework via a multiple Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar-based sensing system. In this considered system, two radars are deployed distributively to acquire motion vectors from different observation perspectives. We first independently extract reflection points of the interested target from different radars by applying the proposed neighboring reflection points detection method after processing the traditional 2-dimensional Fast Fourier Transform (2D-FFT). The obtained sufficient corresponding information of detected reflection points, e.g., distances, velocities, and angle information, can be exploited to synthesize motion velocity vectors to achieve a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance, which does not require knowledge of the relative position of the two radars. Furthermore, we utilize a long short-term memory (LSTM) network as well as the synthesized motion velocity vectors to classify different gestures, which can achieve a significantly high accuracy of gesture recognition with a 1600-sample data set, e.g., 98.0 % . This paper presents the concept of a novel adaptable sensing solution currently being developed under the EU Commission-founded PHOTONGATE project. This concept will allow for the quantification of multiple analytes of the same or different nature (chemicals, metals, bacteria, etc.) in a single test with levels of sensitivity and selectivity at/or over those offered by current solutions. PHOTONGATE relies on two core technologies: a biochemical technology (molecular gates), which will confer the specificity and, therefore, the capability to be adaptable to the analyte of interest, and which, combined with porous substrates, will increase the sensitivity, and a photonic technology based on localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) structures that serve as transducers for light interaction. Both technologies are in the micron range, facilitating the integration of multiple sensors within a small area (mm2). The concept will be developed for its application in health diagnosis and food safety sectors. It is thought of as an easy-to-use modular concept, which will consist of the sensing module, mainly of a microfluidics cartridge that will house the photonic sensor, and a platform for fluidic handling, optical interrogation, and signal processing. Anomaly detection tasks involving time-series signal processing have been important research topics for decades. In many real-world anomaly detection applications, no specific distributions fit the data, and the characteristics of anomalies are different. Under these circumstances, the detection algorithm requires excellent learning ability of the data features. Transformers, which apply the self-attention mechanism, have shown outstanding performances in modelling long-range dependencies. Although Transformer based models have good prediction performance, they may be influenced by noise and ignore some unusual details, which are significant for anomaly detection. In this paper, a novel temporal context fusion framework: Temporal Context Fusion Transformer (TCF-Trans), is proposed for anomaly detection tasks with applications to time series. The original feature transmitting structure in the decoder of Informer is replaced with the proposed feature fusion decoder to fully utilise the features extracted from shallow and deep decoder layers. This strategy prevents the decoder from missing unusual anomaly details while maintaining robustness from noises inside the data. Besides, we propose the temporal context fusion module to adaptively fuse the generated auxiliary predictions. Extensive experiments on public and collected transportation datasets validate that the proposed framework is effective for anomaly detection in time series. Additionally, the ablation study and a series of parameter sensitivity experiments show that the proposed method maintains high performance under various experimental settings. The process of recognising and classifying radar signals and their radiation sources is currently a key element of operational activities in the electromagnetic environment. Systems of this type, called ELINT class systems, are passive solutions that detect, process, and analyse radio-electronic signals, providing distinctive information on the identified emission source in the final stage of data processing. The data processing in the mentioned types of systems is a very sophisticated issue and is based on advanced machine learning algorithms, artificial neural networks, fractal analysis, intra-pulse analysis, unintentional out-of-band emission analysis, and hybrids of these methods. Currently, there is no optimal method that would allow for the unambiguous identification of particular copies of the same type of radar emission source. This article constitutes an attempt to analyse radar signals generated by six radars of the same type under comparable measurement conditions for all six cases. The concept of the SEI module for the ELINT system was proposed in this paper. The main aim was to perform an advanced analysis, the purpose of which was to identify particular copies of those radars. Pioneering in this research is the application of the author's algorithm for the data particle geometrical divide, which at the moment has no reference in international publication reports. The research revealed that applying the data particle geometrical divide algorithms to the SEI process concerning six copies of the same radar type allows for almost three times better accuracy than a random labelling strategy within approximately one second. Partial discharge (PD) is the primary factor causing insulation degradation in transformers. However, the collected signals of partial discharge are often contaminated with significant noise. This makes it difficult to extract the PD signal and hinders subsequent signal analysis and processing. This paper proposes a denoising method for transformer partial discharge based on the Whale VMD algorithm combined with adaptive filtering and wavelet thresholding (WVNW). First, the WOA is used to optimize the important parameters of the VMD. The selected mode components from the VMD decomposition are then subjected to preliminary denoising based on the kurtosis criterion. The reconstructed signal is further denoised using the Adaptive Filter (NLMS) algorithm to remove narrowband interference noise. Finally, the residual white noise is eliminated using the Wavelet Thresholding algorithm. In simulation experiments and practical measurements, the proposed method is compared quantitatively with previous methods, VMD-WT, and EMD-WT, based on metrics such as SNR, RMSE, NCC, and NRR. The results indicate that the WVNW method effectively suppresses noise interference and restores the original PD signal waveform with high waveform similarity while preserving a significant amount of local discharge signal features. Electromyography (EMG) is gaining importance in many research and clinical applications, including muscle fatigue detection, control of robotic mechanisms and prostheses, clinical diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases and quantification of force. However, EMG signals can be contaminated by various types of noise, interference and artifacts, leading to potential data misinterpretation. Even assuming best practices, the acquired signal may still contain contaminants. The aim of this paper is to review methods employed to reduce the contamination of single channel EMG signals. Specifically, we focus on methods which enable a full reconstruction of the EMG signal without loss of information. This includes subtraction methods used in the time domain, denoising methods performed after the signal decomposition and hybrid approaches that combine multiple methods. Finally, this paper provides a discussion on the suitability of the individual methods based on the type of contaminant(s) present in the signal and the specific requirements of the application. Gesture recognition can help people with a speech impairment to communicate and promote the development of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) technology. With the development of wireless technology, passive gesture recognition based on RFID has become a research hotspot. In this paper, we propose a low-cost, non-invasive and scalable gesture recognition technology, and successfully implement the RF-alphabet, a gesture recognition system for complex, fine-grained, domain-independent 26 English letters; the RF-alphabet has three major advantages: first, this paper achieves complete capture of complex, fine-grained gesture data by designing a dual-tag, dual-antenna layout. Secondly, to overcome the disadvantages of the large training sets and long training times of traditional deep learning. We design and combine the Difference threshold similarity calculation prediction model to extract digital signal features to achieve real-time feature analysis of gesture signals. Finally, the RF alphabet solves the problem of confusing the signal characteristics of letters. Confused letters are distinguished by comparing the phase values of feature points. The RF-alphabet ends up with an average accuracy of 90.28% and 89.7% in different domains for new users and new environments, respectively, by performing feature analysis on similar signals. This paper presents some advances in condition monitoring for rotary machines (particularly for a lathe headstock gearbox) running idle with a constant speed, based on the behaviour of a driving three-phase AC asynchronous induction motor used as a sensor of the mechanical power via the absorbed electrical power. The majority of the variable phenomena involved in this condition monitoring are periodical (machines having rotary parts) and should be mechanically supplied through a variable electrical power absorbed by a motor with periodical components (having frequencies equal to the rotational frequency of the machine parts). The paper proposes some signal processing and analysis methods for the variable part of the absorbed electrical power (or its constituents: active and instantaneous power, instantaneous current, power factor, etc.) in order to achieve a description of these periodical constituents, each one often described as a sum of sinusoidal components with a fundamental and some harmonics. In testing these methods, the paper confirms the hypothesis that the evolution of the electrical power (instantaneous and active) has a predominantly deterministic character. Two main signal analysis methods were used, with good, comparable results: the fast Fourier transform of short and long signal sequences (for the frequency domain) and the curve fitting estimation (in the time domain). The determination of the amplitude, frequency and phase at origin of time for each of these components helps to describe the condition (normal or abnormal) of the machine parts. Several achievements confirm the viability of this study: a characterization of a flat driving belt condition and a beating power phenomenon generated by two rotary shafts inside the gearbox. For comparison purposes, the same signal analysis methods were applied to describe the evolution of the vibration signal and the instantaneous angular speed signal at the gearbox output spindle. With the proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in both commercial and military use, the public is paying increasing attention to UAV identification and regulation. The micro-Doppler characteristics of a UAV can reflect its structure and motion information, which provides an important reference for UAV recognition. The low flight altitude and small radar cross-section (RCS) of UAVs make the cancellation of strong ground clutter become a key problem in extracting the weak micro-Doppler signals. In this paper, a clutter suppression method based on an orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm is proposed, which is used to process echo signals obtained by a linear frequency modulated continuous wave (LFMCW) radar. The focus of this method is on the idea of sparse representation, which establishes a complete set of environmental clutter dictionaries to effectively suppress clutter in the received echo signals of a hovering UAV. The processed signals are analyzed in the time–frequency domain. According to the flicker phenomenon of UAV rotor blades and related micro-Doppler characteristics, the feature parameters of unknown UAVs can be estimated. Compared with traditional signal processing methods, the method based on OMP algorithm shows advantages in having a low signal-to-noise ratio (−10 dB). Field experiments indicate that this approach can effectively reduce clutter power (−15 dB) and successfully extract micro-Doppler signals for identifying different UAVs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
