Although the theoretical basis for surface acoustic wave gyroscopes (SAWGs) was first proposed in 1980, their design concepts are still under development. Nevertheless, these sensors are of a great interest in the potential market owing to their exceptional shock resistance, small size, low power consumption, and simple manufacturing process that ensures low cost. This paper aims to conscientiously investigate the ideas that have been proposed over the past decade in this area and evaluate the potential development required to bring SAWGs to market. It should be of interest for researchers in the field who might have missed some useful solutions that could be a missing piece in their own design, or for young researchers to inspire their creativity and open new research on the topic. Additionally, since some of the reviewed SAWG design concepts are based on a combination of several physical principles (for example, optical measurements), researchers from other fields may find useful solutions for incorporating surface acoustic wave techniques into their device concepts. The early detection of small cracks in large metal structures is a crucial requirement for the implementation of a structural health monitoring (SHM) system with a low transducers density. This work tackles the challenging problem of the early detection of submillimeter notch-type defects with a semielliptical shape and a groove at a constant width of 100 µm and 3 mm depth in a 4.1 mm thick aluminum plate. This defect is investigated with an ultrasonic guided wave (UGW) A0 mode at 550 kHz to investigate the long range in thick metal plates. The mode selection is obtained by interdigital transducers (IDTs) designed to operate with a 5 mm central wavelength. The novel contribution is the validation of the detection by pulse-echo and pitch and catch with UGW transducers to cover a distance up to 70 cm to reduce the transducers density. The analysis of scattering from this submillimeter defect at different orientations is carried out using simulations with a Finite Element Model (FEM). The detection of the defect is obtained by comparing the scattered signals from the defect with baseline signals of the pristine laminate. Finally, the paper shows that the simulated results are in good agreement with the experimental ones, demonstrating the possible implementation in an SHM system based on the efficient propagation of an antisymmetric mode by IDTs. Hematite (α -Fe2O3) is widely used in sensor sensitization due to its excellent optical properties. In this study, we present a sensitivity-enhanced surface plasmon resonance alcohol sensor based on Fe2O3/Au. We describe the fabrication process of the sensor and characterize its structure. We conduct performance testing on sensors coated multiple times and use solutions with the same gradient of refractive indices as the sensing medium. Within the refractive index range of 1.3335–1.3635, the sensor that was coated twice achieved the highest sensitivity, reaching 2933.2 nm/RIU. This represents a 30.26% enhancement in sensitivity compared to a sensor with a pure gold monolayer film structure. Additionally, we demonstrated the application of this sensor in alcohol concentration detection by testing the alcohol content of common beverages, showing excellent agreement with theoretical values and highlighting the sensor's potential in food testing. Capacitive sensors are widely used in industrial applications, such as CNC machine tools, where reliable positioning in the micrometer range with nanometer accuracy is required. Hence, these sensors are operated in harsh industrial environments. The accuracy of these sensors is mainly limited by slope errors and nonlinearities. In practice, the required accuracy of these sensors is achieved by a calibration against a metrological high-quality reference such as interferometric displacement measurement systems. This usually involves the use of high-order polynomials as calibration functions based on empirical data. In metrology, this is only the second-best approach and has disadvantages in terms of stability over the measurement range of the instrument. In addition, the validity of these empirical calibrations over time is questionable, and the associated uncertainty can only be roughly estimated. This makes regular recalibration of such sensors at short intervals mandatory to ensure the reliability of the displacement measurement. In this paper, we report on our investigations of the different parameters that affect the accuracy of capacitive sensors. Since the capacitance of these sensors results from the electric fields that build up between the electrodes, these field lines are calculated using FEM simulation models for typical commercial sensors. In the following the influence of various geometric parameters such as edge radius, guard ring size and shape, or thickness of the electrodes are individually analyzed according to their impact on the accuracy of these sensors. Based on these simulations, the deviations of the capacitance as they arise for real detector geometries can then be compared with idealized, de facto unrealizable parallel plate capacitors. This methodology allows overall uncertainty of capacitive sensors to be decomposed into their individual components and sorted in terms of their contribution to the uncertainty budget. The individual FEM-based analysis then enables a systematic analysis of the sources of uncertainty and, thus, reveals possibilities to improve manufacturing processes for capacitive sensors, to put these sensors on a solid metrological basis, and to improve the performance of these displacement measurement systems in the long run, i.e., to provide better sensors for the application. Guided acoustic waves are commonly used in domestic water meters to measure the flow rate. The accuracy of this measurement method is affected by factors such as variations in temperature and limescale deposition inside of the pipe. In this work, a new approach using signals from different sound propagation paths is used to determine these quantities and allow for subsequent compensation. This method evaluates the different propagation times of guided Lamb waves in flow measurement applications. A finite element method-based model is used to identify the calibration curves for the device under test. The simulated dependencies on temperature and layer thickness are validated by experimental data. Finally, a test on simulated data with varying temperatures and limescale depositions proves that this method can be used to separate both effects. Based on these values, a flow measurement correction scheme can be derived that provides an improved resolution of guided acoustic wave-based flow meters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new technique for measuring liquid-level utilizing wedge wave is presented and demonstrated through FEM simulation and a corresponding experiment. The velocities of wedge waves in the air and the water, and the sensitivities for the measurement, are compared with the simulation and the results obtained in the experiments. Combining the simulation and the measurement theory, it is verified that the foundation framework for the methods is available. The liquid-level sensing is carried out using the aluminum waveguide with a 30° wedge in the water. The liquid-level is proportional to the traveling time of the mode 1 wedge wave. The standard deviations and the uncertainties of the measurement are 0.65 mm and 0.21 mm using interface echo, and 0.39 mm and 0.12 mm utilized by end echo, which are smaller than the industry standard of 1.5 mm. The measurement resolutions are 7.68 μm using the interface echo, which is the smallest among all the guided acoustic wave-based liquid-level sensing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), which is a common thermoplastic Additive Manufacturing (AM) method, the polymer model material that is in the form of a flexible filament is heated above its glass transition temperature (Tg) to a semi-molten state in the head’s liquefier. The heated material is extruded in a rastering configuration onto the building platform where it rapidly cools and solidifies with the adjoining material. The heating and rapid cooling cycles of the work materials exhibited during the FDM process provoke non-uniform thermal gradients and cause stress build-up that consequently result in part distortions, dimensional inaccuracy and even possible part fabrication failure. Within the purpose of optimizing the FDM technique by eliminating the presence of such undesirable effects, real-time monitoring is essential for the evaluation and control of the final parts’ quality. The present work investigates the temperature distributions developed during the FDM building process of multilayered thin plates and on this basis a numerical study is also presented. The recordings of temperature changes were achieved by embedding temperature measuring sensors at various locations into the middle-plane of the printed structures. The experimental results, mapping the temperature variations within the samples, were compared to the corresponding ones obtained by finite element modeling, exhibiting good correlation. A Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation study is conducted, aiming to scrutinize the sensitivity of Sezawa wave mode in a multilayer AlN/SiO2/Si Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensor to low concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), that is, trichloromethane, trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride and tetrachloroethene. A Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) compatible AlN/SiO2/Si based multilayer SAW resonator structure is taken into account for this purpose. In this study, first, the influence of AlN and SiO2 layers’ thicknesses over phase velocities and electromechanical coupling coefficients (k2) of two SAW modes (i.e., Rayleigh and Sezawa) is analyzed and the optimal thicknesses of AlN and SiO2 layers are opted for best propagation characteristics. Next, the study is further extended to analyze the mass loading effect on resonance frequencies of SAW modes by coating a thin Polyisobutylene (PIB) polymer film over the AlN surface. Finally, the sensitivity of the two SAW modes is examined for VOCs. This study concluded that the sensitivity of Sezawa wave mode for 1 ppm of selected volatile organic gases is twice that of the Rayleigh wave mode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
