Potholes and other road surface damages pose significant risks to vehicles and traffic safety. The current methods of in situ visual inspection for potholes or cracks are inefficient, costly, and hazardous. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop automated systems for assessing road surface conditions, aiming to efficiently and accurately reconstruct, recognize, and locate potholes. In recent years, various methods utilizing (a) computer vision, (b) three-dimensional (3D) point clouds, or (c) smartphone data have been employed to map road surface quality conditions. Machine learning and deep learning techniques have increasingly enhanced the performance of these methods. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge computer vision and machine learning algorithms for pothole detection. It covers topics such as sensing systems for acquiring two-dimensional (2D) and 3D road data, classical algorithms based on 2D image processing, segmentation-based algorithms using 3D point cloud modeling, machine learning, deep learning algorithms, and hybrid approaches. The review highlights that hybrid methods combining traditional image processing and advanced machine learning techniques offer the highest accuracy in pothole detection. Machine learning approaches, particularly deep learning, demonstrate superior adaptability and detection rates, while traditional 2D and 3D methods provide valuable baseline techniques. By reviewing and evaluating existing vision-based methods, this paper clarifies the current landscape of pothole detection technologies and identifies opportunities for future research and development. In maritime transportation, a ship's draft survey serves as a primary method for weighing bulk cargo. The accuracy of the ship's draft reading determines the fairness of bulk cargo transactions. Human visual-based draft reading methods face issues such as safety concerns, high labor costs, and subjective interpretation. Therefore, some image processing methods are utilized to achieve automatic draft reading. However, due to the limitations in the spectral characteristics of RGB images, existing image processing methods are susceptible to water surface environmental interference, such as reflections. To solve this issue, we obtained and annotated 524 multispectral images of a ship's draft as the research dataset, marking the first application of integrating NIR information and RGB images for automatic draft reading tasks. Additionally, a dual-branch backbone named BIF is proposed to extract and combine spectral information from RGB and NIR images. The backbone network can be combined with the existing segmentation head and detection head to perform waterline segmentation and draft detection. By replacing the original ResNet-50 backbone of YOLOv8, we reached a mAP of 99.2% in the draft detection task. Similarly, combining UPerNet with our dual-branch backbone, the mIoU of the waterline segmentation task was improved from 98.9% to 99.3%. Railway transportation has been integrated into people's lives. According to the "Notice on the release of the General Technical Specification of High-speed Railway Power Supply Safety Testing (6C System) System" issued by the National Railway Administration of China in 2012, it is required to install pantograph and slide monitoring devices in high-speed railway stations, station throats and the inlet and exit lines of high-speed railway sections, and it is required to detect the damage of the slider with high precision. It can be seen that the good condition of the pantograph slider is very important for the normal operation of the railway system. As a part of providing power for high-speed rail and subway, the pantograph must be paid attention to in railway transportation to ensure its integrity. The wear of the pantograph is mainly due to the contact power supply between the slide block and the long wire during high-speed operation, which inevitably produces scratches, resulting in depressions on the upper surface of the pantograph slide block. During long-term use, because the depression is too deep, there is a risk of fracture. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the slider regularly and replace the slider with serious wear. At present, most of the traditional methods use automation technology or simple computer vision technology for detection, which is inefficient. Therefore, this paper introduces computer vision and deep learning technology into pantograph slide wear detection. Specifically, this paper mainly studies the wear detection of the pantograph slider based on deep learning and the main purpose is to improve the detection accuracy and improve the effect of segmentation. From a methodological perspective, this paper employs a linear array camera to enhance the quality of the data sets. Additionally, it integrates an attention mechanism to improve segmentation performance. In clinical conditions limited by equipment, attaining lightweight skin lesion segmentation is pivotal as it facilitates the integration of the model into diverse medical devices, thereby enhancing operational efficiency. However, the lightweight design of the model may face accuracy degradation, especially when dealing with complex images such as skin lesion images with irregular regions, blurred boundaries, and oversized boundaries. To address these challenges, we propose an efficient lightweight attention network (ELANet) for the skin lesion segmentation task. In ELANet, two different attention mechanisms of the bilateral residual module (BRM) can achieve complementary information, which enhances the sensitivity to features in spatial and channel dimensions, respectively, and then multiple BRMs are stacked for efficient feature extraction of the input information. In addition, the network acquires global information and improves segmentation accuracy by putting feature maps of different scales through multi-scale attention fusion (MAF) operations. Finally, we evaluate the performance of ELANet on three publicly available datasets, ISIC2016, ISIC2017, and ISIC2018, and the experimental results show that our algorithm can achieve 89.87%, 81.85%, and 82.87% of the mIoU on the three datasets with a parametric of 0.459 M, which is an excellent balance between accuracy and lightness and is superior to many existing segmentation methods. The industrial manufacturing model is undergoing a transformation from a product-centric model to a customer-centric one. Driven by customized requirements, the complexity of products and the requirements for quality have increased, which pose a challenge to the applicability of traditional machine vision technology. Extensive research demonstrates the effectiveness of AI-based learning and image processing on specific objects or tasks, but few publications focus on the composite task of the integrated product, the traceability and improvability of methods, as well as the extraction and communication of knowledge between different scenarios or tasks. To address this problem, this paper proposes a common, knowledge-driven, generic vision inspection framework, targeted for standardizing product inspection into a process of information decoupling and adaptive metrics. Task-related object perception is planned into a multi-granularity and multi-pattern progressive alignment based on industry knowledge and structured tasks. Inspection is abstracted as a reconfigurable process of multi-sub-pattern space combination mapping and difference metric under appropriate high-level strategies and experiences. Finally, strategies for knowledge improvement and accumulation based on historical data are presented. The experiment demonstrates the process of generating a detection pipeline for complex products and continuously improving it through failure tracing and knowledge improvement. Compared to the ( 1.767 ° , 69.802 mm) and 0.883 obtained by state-of-the-art deep learning methods, the generated pipeline achieves a pose estimation ranging from ( 2.771 ° , 153.584 mm) to ( 1.034 ° , 52.308 mm) and a detection rate ranging from 0.462 to 0.927. The traditional methods for 3D reconstruction mainly involve using image processing techniques or deep learning segmentation models for rib extraction. After post-processing, voxel-based rib reconstruction is achieved. However, these methods suffer from limited reconstruction accuracy and low computational efficiency. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a 3D rib reconstruction method based on point cloud adaptive smoothing and denoising. We converted voxel data from CT images to multi-attribute point cloud data. Then, we applied point cloud adaptive smoothing and denoising methods to eliminate noise and non-rib points in the point cloud. Additionally, efficient 3D reconstruction and post-processing techniques were employed to achieve high-accuracy and comprehensive 3D rib reconstruction results. Experimental calculations demonstrated that compared to voxel-based 3D rib reconstruction methods, the 3D rib models generated by the proposed method achieved a 40% improvement in reconstruction accuracy and were twice as efficient as the former. Building occupancy information is significant for a variety of reasons, from allocation of resources in smart buildings to responding during emergency situations. As most people spend more than 90% of their time indoors, a comfortable indoor environment is crucial. To ensure comfort, traditional HVAC systems condition rooms assuming maximum occupancy, accounting for more than 50% of buildings' energy budgets in the US. Occupancy level is a key factor in ensuring energy efficiency, as occupancy-controlled HVAC systems can reduce energy waste by conditioning rooms based on actual usage. Numerous studies have focused on developing occupancy estimation models leveraging existing sensors, with camera-based methods gaining popularity due to their high precision and widespread availability. However, the main concern with using cameras for occupancy estimation is the potential violation of occupants' privacy. Unlike previous video-/image-based occupancy estimation methods, we addressed the issue of occupants' privacy in this work by proposing and investigating both motion-based and motion-independent occupancy counting methods on intentionally blurred video frames. Our proposed approach included the development of a motion-based technique that inherently preserves privacy, as well as motion-independent techniques such as detection-based and density-estimation-based methods. To improve the accuracy of the motion-independent approaches, we utilized deblurring methods: an iterative statistical technique and a deep-learning-based method. Furthermore, we conducted an analysis of the privacy implications of our motion-independent occupancy counting system by comparing the original, blurred, and deblurred frames using different image quality assessment metrics. This analysis provided insights into the trade-off between occupancy estimation accuracy and the preservation of occupants' visual privacy. The combination of iterative statistical deblurring and density estimation achieved a 16.29% counting error, outperforming our other proposed approaches while preserving occupants' visual privacy to a certain extent. Our multifaceted approach aims to contribute to the field of occupancy estimation by proposing a solution that seeks to balance the trade-off between accuracy and privacy. This paper proposes a new method for recognizing, extracting, and processing Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) patterns from two-dimensional plots to identify specific defect types affecting electrical equipment without human intervention while retaining the principals that make PRPD analysis an effective diagnostic technique. The proposed method does not rely on training complex deep learning algorithms which demand substantial computational resources and extensive datasets that can pose significant hurdles for the application of on-line partial discharge monitoring. Instead, the developed Cosine Cluster Net (CCNet) model, which is an image processing pipeline, can extract and process patterns from any two-dimensional PRPD plot before employing the cosine similarity function to measure the likeness of the patterns to predefined templates of known defect types. The PRPD pattern recognition capabilities of the model were tested using several manually classified PRPD images available in the existing literature. The model consistently produced similarity scores that identified the same defect type as the one from the manual classification. The successful defect type reporting from the initial trials of the CCNet model together with the speed of the identification, which typically does not exceed four seconds, indicates potential for real-time applications. With the development of deep learning, the Super-Resolution (SR) reconstruction of microscopic images has improved significantly. However, the scarcity of microscopic images for training, the underutilization of hierarchical features in original Low-Resolution (LR) images, and the high-frequency noise unrelated with the image structure generated during the reconstruction process are still challenges in the Single Image Super-Resolution (SISR) field. Faced with these issues, we first collected sufficient microscopic images through Motic, a company engaged in the design and production of optical and digital microscopes, to establish a dataset. Secondly, we proposed a Residual Dense Attention Generative Adversarial Network (RDAGAN). The network comprises a generator, an image discriminator, and a feature discriminator. The generator includes a Residual Dense Block (RDB) and a Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), focusing on extracting the hierarchical features of the original LR image. Simultaneously, the added feature discriminator enables the network to generate high-frequency features pertinent to the image's structure. Finally, we conducted experimental analysis and compared our model with six classic models. Compared with the best model, our model improved PSNR and SSIM by about 1.5 dB and 0.2, respectively. The aim of this article is to introduce a novel approach to identifying flow regimes and void fractions in microchannel flow boiling, which is based on binary image segmentation using digital image processing and deep learning. The proposed image processing pipeline uses adaptive thresholding, blurring, gamma correction, contour detection, and histogram comparison to separate vapor from liquid areas, while the deep learning method uses a customized version of a convolutional neural network (CNN) called U-net to extract meaningful features from video frames. Both approaches enabled the automatic detection of flow boiling conditions, such as bubbly, slug, and annular flow, as well as automatic void fraction calculation. Especially CNN demonstrated its ability to deliver fast and dependable results, presenting an appealing substitute to manual feature extraction. The U-net-based CNN was able to segment flow boiling images with a Dice score of 99.1% and classify the above flow regimes with an overall classification accuracy of 91%. The degradation of road pavements due to environmental factors is a pressing issue in infrastructure maintenance, necessitating precise identification of pavement distresses. The pavement condition index (PCI) serves as a critical metric for evaluating pavement conditions, essential for effective budget allocation and performance tracking. Traditional manual PCI assessment methods are limited by labor intensity, subjectivity, and susceptibility to human error. Addressing these challenges, this paper presents a novel, end-to-end automated method for PCI calculation, integrating deep learning and image processing technologies. The first stage employs a deep learning algorithm for accurate detection of pavement cracks, followed by the application of a segmentation-based skeleton algorithm in image processing to estimate crack width precisely. Images obtained in an unfavorable environment may be affected by haze or fog, leading to fuzzy image details, low contrast, and loss of important information. Recently, significant progress has been achieved in the realm of image dehazing, largely due to the adoption of deep learning techniques. Owing to the lack of modules specifically designed to learn the unique characteristics of haze, existing deep neural network-based methods are impractical for processing images containing haze. In addition, most networks primarily focus on learning clear image information while disregarding potential features in hazy images. To address these limitations, we propose an innovative method called contrastive multiscale transformer for image dehazing (CMT-Net). This method uses the multiscale transformer to enable the network to learn global hazy features at multiple scales. Furthermore, we introduce feature combination attention and a haze-aware module to enhance the network's ability to handle varying concentrations of haze by assigning more weight to regions containing haze. Finally, we design a multistage contrastive learning loss incorporating different positive and negative samples at various stages to guide the network's learning process to restore real and non-hazy images. Detecting parcels accurately and efficiently has always been a challenging task when unloading from trucks onto conveyor belts because of the diverse and complex ways in which parcels are stacked. Conventional methods struggle to quickly and accurately classify the various shapes and surface patterns of unordered parcels. In this paper, we propose a parcel-picking surface detection method based on deep learning and image processing for the efficient unloading of diverse and unordered parcels. Our goal is to develop a systematic image processing algorithm that emphasises the boundaries of parcels regardless of their shape, pattern, or layout. The core of the algorithm is the utilisation of RGB-D technology for detecting the primary boundary lines regardless of obstacles such as adhesive labels, tapes, or parcel surface patterns. For cases where detecting the boundary lines is difficult owing to narrow gaps between parcels, we propose using deep learning-based boundary line detection through the You Only Look at Coefficients (YOLACT) model. Using image segmentation techniques, the algorithm efficiently predicts boundary lines, enabling the accurate detection of irregularly sized parcels with complex surface patterns. Furthermore, even for rotated parcels, we can extract their edges through complex mathematical operations using the depth values of the specified position, enabling the detection of the wider surfaces of the rotated parcels. Finally, we validate the accuracy and real-time performance of our proposed method through various case studies, achieving mAP (50) values of 93.8% and 90.8% for randomly sized and rotationally covered boxes with diverse colours and patterns, respectively. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with Digital Twins (DTs) has emerged as a promising approach to revolutionize healthcare, particularly in terms of diagnosis and management of thoracic disorders. This study proposes a comprehensive framework, named Lung-DT, which leverages IoT sensors and AI algorithms to establish the digital representation of a patient's respiratory health. Using the YOLOv8 neural network, the Lung-DT system accurately classifies chest X-rays into five distinct categories of lung diseases, including "normal", "covid", "lung_opacity", "pneumonia", and "tuberculosis". The performance of the system was evaluated employing a chest X-ray dataset available in the literature, demonstrating average accuracy of 96.8%, precision of 92%, recall of 97%, and F1-score of 94%. The proposed Lung-DT framework offers several advantages over conventional diagnostic methods. Firstly, it enables real-time monitoring of lung health through continuous data acquisition from IoT sensors, facilitating early diagnosis and intervention. Secondly, the AI-powered classification module provides automated and objective assessments of chest X-rays, reducing dependence on subjective human interpretation. This paper introduces a noise augmentation technique designed to enhance the robustness of state-of-the-art (SOTA) deep learning models against degraded image quality, a common challenge in long-term recording systems. Our method, demonstrated through the classification of digital holographic images, utilizes a novel approach to synthesize and apply random colored noise, addressing the typically encountered correlated noise patterns in such images. Empirical results show that our technique not only maintains classification accuracy in high-quality images but also significantly improves it when given noisy inputs without increasing the training time. The detection of smoky diesel vehicles is a key step in reducing air pollution from transportation. We propose a new method for identifying smoky vehicles that proceeds in three stages: (1) the detection of vehicle shapes, license plates, and smoke regions; (2) the implementation of the two matching techniques based on the smoke region–vehicle shape and smoke region–license plate relationships; and (3) the refinement of the smoke region detected. The first stage involves the evaluation of various You Only Look Once (YOLO) models to identify the best-fit model for object detection. YOLOv5s was the most effective, particularly for the smoke region prediction, achieving a precision of 91.4% and a mean average precision at 0.5 (mAP@0.5) of 91%. It also had the highest mean mAP@0.5 of 93.9% across all three classes. The application of the two matching techniques significantly reduced the rate of false negatives and enhanced the rate of true positives for the smoky diesel vehicles through the detection of their license plates. Moreover, a refinement process based on image processing theory was implemented, effectively eliminating incorrect smoke region predictions caused by vehicle shadows. As a result, our method achieved a detection rate of 97.45% and a precision of 93.50%, which are higher than that of the two existing popular methods, and produced an acceptable false alarm rate of 5.44%. Particularly, the proposed method substantially reduced the processing time to as low as 85 ms per image, compared to 140.3 and 182.6 ms per image in the two reference studies. In conclusion, the proposed method showed remarkable improvements in the accuracy, robustness, and feasibility of smoky diesel vehicle detection. In recent years, optical camera communication (OCC) has garnered attention as a research focus. OCC uses optical light to transmit data by scattering the light in various directions. Although this can be advantageous with multiple transmitter scenarios, there are situations in which only a single transmitter is permitted to communicate. Therefore, this method is proposed to fulfill the latter requirement using 2D object size to calculate the proximity of the objects through an AI object detection model. This approach enables prioritization among transmitters based on the transmitter proximity to the receiver for communication, facilitating alternating communication with multiple transmitters. The image processing employed when receiving the signals from transmitters enables communication to be performed without the need to modify the camera parameters. During the implementation, the distance between the transmitter and receiver varied between 1.0 and 5.0 m, and the system demonstrated a maximum data rate of 3.945 kbps with a minimum BER of 4.2 × 10 − 3 . The term out-of-stock (OOS) describes a problem that occurs when shoppers come to a store and the product they are seeking is not present on its designated shelf. Missing products generate huge sales losses and may lead to a declining reputation or the loss of loyal customers. In this paper, we propose a novel deep-learning (DL)-based OOS-detection method that utilizes a two-stage training process and a post-processing technique designed for the removal of inaccurate detections. To develop the method, we utilized an OOS detection dataset that contains a commonly used fully empty OOS class and a novel class that represents the frontal OOS. We present a new image augmentation procedure in which some existing OOS instances are enlarged by duplicating and mirroring themselves over nearby products. An object-detection model is first pre-trained using only augmented shelf images and, then, fine-tuned on the original data. During the inference, the detected OOS instances are post-processed based on their aspect ratio. In particular, the detected instances are discarded if their aspect ratio is higher than the maximum or lower than the minimum instance aspect ratio found in the dataset. The experimental results showed that the proposed method outperforms the existing DL-based OOS-detection methods and detects fully empty and frontal OOS instances with 86.3% and 83.7% of the average precision, respectively. Recent advancements in computer vision technology, developments in sensors and sensor-collecting approaches, and the use of deep and transfer learning approaches have excelled in the development of autonomous vehicles. On-road vehicle detection has become a task of significant importance, especially due to exponentially increasing research on autonomous vehicles during the past few years. With high-end computing resources, a large number of deep learning models have been trained and tested for on-road vehicle detection recently. Vehicle detection may become a challenging process especially due to varying light and weather conditions like night, snow, sand, rain, foggy conditions, etc. In addition, vehicle detection should be fast enough to work in real time. This study investigates the use of the recent YOLO version, YOLOx, to detect vehicles in bad weather conditions including rain, fog, snow, and sandstorms. The model is tested on the publicly available benchmark dataset DAWN containing images containing four bad weather conditions, different illuminations, background, and number of vehicles in a frame. The efficacy of the model is evaluated in terms of precision, recall, and mAP. The results exhibit the better performance of YOLOx-s over YOLOx-m and YOLOx-l variants. YOLOx-s has 0.8983 and 0.8656 mAP for snow and sandstorms, respectively, while its mAP for rain and fog is 0.9509 and 0.9524, respectively. The performance of models is better for snow and foggy weather than rainy weather sandstorms. Accurate prediction of the estrus period is crucial for optimizing insemination efficiency and reducing costs in animal husbandry, a vital sector for global food production. Precise estrus period determination is essential to avoid economic losses, such as milk production reductions, delayed calf births, and disqualification from government support. The proposed method integrates estrus period detection with cow identification using augmented reality (AR). It initiates deep learning-based mounting detection, followed by identifying the mounting region of interest (ROI) using YOLOv5. The ROI is then cropped with padding, and cow ID detection is executed using YOLOv5 on the cropped ROI. The system subsequently records the identified cow IDs. The proposed system accurately detects mounting behavior with 99% accuracy, identifies the ROI where mounting occurs with 98% accuracy, and detects the mounting couple with 94% accuracy. This article presents an integrated system that uses the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to perform a comprehensive crop analysis, combining qualitative and quantitative evaluations for efficient agricultural management. A convolutional neural network-based model, Detectron2, serves as the foundation for detecting and segmenting objects of interest in acquired aerial images. This model was trained on a dataset prepared using the COCO format, which features a variety of annotated objects. The system architecture comprises a frontend and a backend component. The frontend facilitates user interaction and annotation of objects on multispectral images. The backend involves image loading, project management, polygon handling, and multispectral image processing. For qualitative analysis, users can delineate regions of interest using polygons, which are then subjected to analysis using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) or Optimized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI). For quantitative analysis, the system deploys a pre-trained model capable of object detection, allowing for the counting and localization of specific objects, with a focus on young lettuce crops. Tunnel cracks are the main factors that cause damage and collapse of tunnel structures. How to detect tunnel cracks efficiently and avoid safety accidents caused by tunnel cracks effectively is a research hotspot at present. In order to meet the need for efficient detection of tunnel cracks, the tunnel crack detection method based on improved Retinex and deep learning is proposed in this paper. The tunnel crack images collected by optical imaging equipment are used to improve the contrast information of tunnel crack images using the image enhancement algorithm, and this image enhancement algorithm has the function of multi-scale Retinex decomposition with improved central filtering. An improved VGG19 network model is constructed to achieve efficient segmentation of tunnel crack images through deep learning methods and then form the segmented binary image. The Zhang–Suen fast parallel-thinning method is used to obtain the skeleton map of the single-layer pixel, and the length and width information of the tunnel cracks are obtained. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by experiments. Compared with other methods in the literature, the maximum deviation in the length of the tunnel crack is about 5 mm, and the maximum deviation in the width of the tunnel crack is about 0.8 mm. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a shorter detection time and higher detection accuracy. Sign language recognition, an essential interface between the hearing and deaf-mute communities, faces challenges with high false positive rates and computational costs, even with the use of advanced deep learning techniques. Our proposed solution is a stacked encoded model, combining artificial intelligence (AI) with the Internet of Things (IoT), which refines feature extraction and classification to overcome these challenges. We leverage a lightweight backbone model for preliminary feature extraction and use stacked autoencoders to further refine these features. Our approach harnesses the scalability of big data, showing notable improvement in accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and complexity analysis. Our model's effectiveness is demonstrated through testing on the ArSL2018 benchmark dataset, showcasing superior performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Fishing has provided mankind with a protein-rich source of food and labor, allowing for the development of an important industry, which has led to the overexploitation of most targeted fish species. The sustainable management of these natural resources requires effective control of fish landings and, therefore, an accurate calculation of fishing quotas. This work proposes a deep learning-based spatial-spectral method to classify five pelagic species of interest for the Chilean fishing industry, including the targeted Engraulis ringens, Merluccius gayi, and Strangomera bentincki and non-targeted Normanichthtys crockeri and Stromateus stellatus fish species. This proof-of-concept method is composed of two channels of a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that processes the Red–Green–Blue (RGB) images and the visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) reflectance spectra of each species. The classification results of the CNN model achieved over 94% in all performance metrics, outperforming other state-of-the-art techniques. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs), initially developed for image processing applications, have recently received significant attention within the field of medical ultrasound imaging. In this study, passive cavitation imaging/mapping (PCI/PAM), which is used to map cavitation sources based on the correlation of signals across an array of receivers, is evaluated. Traditional reconstruction techniques in PCI, such as delay-and-sum, yield high spatial resolution at the cost of a substantial computational time. This results from the resource-intensive process of determining sensor weights for individual pixels in these methodologies. Consequently, the use of conventional algorithms for image reconstruction does not meet the speed requirements that are essential for real-time monitoring. Here, we show that a three-dimensional (3D) convolutional network can learn the image reconstruction algorithm for a 16 × 16 element matrix probe with a receive frequency ranging from 256 kHz up to 1.0 MHz. The network was trained and evaluated using simulated data representing point sources, resulting in the successful reconstruction of volumetric images with high sensitivity, especially for single isolated sources (100% in the test set). As the number of simultaneous sources increased, the network's ability to detect weaker intensity sources diminished, although it always correctly identified the main lobe. Notably, however, network inference was remarkably fast, completing the task in approximately 178 s for a dataset comprising 650 frames of 41 3 volume images with signal duration of 20 μ s . This processing speed is roughly thirty times faster than a parallelized implementation of the traditional time exposure acoustics algorithm on the same GPU device. Catastrophic forgetting, which means a rapid forgetting of learned representations while learning new data/samples, is one of the main problems of deep neural networks. In this paper, we propose a novel incremental learning framework that can address the forgetting problem by learning new incoming data in an online manner. We develop a new incremental learning framework that can learn extra data or new classes with less catastrophic forgetting. We adopt the hippocampal memory process to the deep neural networks by defining the effective maximum of neural activation and its boundary to represent a feature distribution. In addition, we incorporate incremental QR factorization into the deep neural networks to learn new data with both existing labels and new labels with less forgetting. The QR factorization can provide the accurate subspace prior, and incremental QR factorization can reasonably express the collaboration between new data with both existing classes and new class with less forgetting. In our framework, a set of appropriate features (i.e., nodes) provides improved representation for each class. We apply our method to the convolutional neural network (CNN) for learning Cifar-100 and Cifar-10 datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed method efficiently alleviates the stability and plasticity dilemma in the deep neural networks by providing the performance stability of a trained network while effectively learning unseen data and additional new classes. Breast cancer is the leading type of cancer in women, causing nearly 600,000 deaths every year, globally. Although the tumors can be localized within the breast, they can spread to other body parts, causing more harm. Therefore, early diagnosis can help reduce the risks of this cancer. However, a breast cancer diagnosis is complicated, requiring biopsy by various methods, such as MRI, ultrasound, BI-RADS, or even needle aspiration and cytology with the suggestions of specialists. On certain occasions, such as body examinations of a large number of people, it is also a large workload to check the images. Therefore, in this work, we present an efficient and automatic diagnosis system based on the hierarchical extreme learning machine (H-ELM) for breast cancer ultrasound results with high efficiency and make a primary diagnosis of the images. To make it compatible to use, this system consists of PNG images and general medical software within the H-ELM framework, which is easily trained and applied. Furthermore, this system only requires ultrasound images on a small scale, of 28 × 28 pixels, reducing the resources and fulfilling the application with low-resolution images. The experimental results show that the system can achieve 86.13% in the classification of breast cancer based on ultrasound images from the public breast ultrasound images (BUSI) dataset, without other relative information and supervision, which is higher than the conventional deep learning methods on the same dataset. Moreover, the training time is highly reduced, to only 5.31 s, and consumes few resources. The function of low-light image enhancement is to improve the visual effect of such images for subsequent processing. Recently, deep learning has been used more and more widely in image processing with the development of artificial intelligence technology, and we provide a comprehensive review of the field of low-light image enhancement in terms of network structure, training data, and evaluation metrics. Object detection and tracking in camera images is a fundamental technology for computer vision and is used in various applications. In particular, object tracking using high-speed cameras is expected to be applied to real-time control in robotics. Therefore, it is required to increase tracking speed and detection accuracy. Currently, however, it is difficult to achieve both of those things simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a tracking method that combines multiple methods: correlation filter-based object tracking, deep learning-based object detection, and motion detection with background subtraction. The algorithms work in parallel and assist each other's processing to improve the overall performance of the system. We named it the "Mutual Assist tracker of feature Filters and Detectors (MAFiD method)". This method aims to achieve both high-speed tracking of moving objects and high detection accuracy. Experiments were conducted to verify the detection performance and processing speed by tracking a transparent capsule moving at high speed. The results show that the tracking speed was 618 frames per second (FPS) and the accuracy was 86% for Intersection over Union (IoU). The detection latency was 3.48 ms. These experimental scores are higher than those of conventional methods, indicating that the MAFiD method achieved fast object tracking while maintaining high detection performance. Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a congenital brain malformation that is closely associated with epilepsy. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for effectively treating and managing FCD. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—one of the most commonly used non-invasive neuroimaging methods for evaluating the structure of the brain—is often implemented along with automatic methods to diagnose FCD. In this review, we define three categories for FCD identification based on MRI: visual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic methods. By conducting a systematic review following the PRISMA statement, we identified 65 relevant papers that have contributed to our understanding of automatic FCD identification techniques. The results of this review present a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art in the field of automatic FCD identification and highlight the progress made and challenges ahead in developing reliable, efficient methods for automatic FCD diagnosis using MRI images. Future developments in this area will most likely lead to the integration of these automatic identification tools into medical image-viewing software, providing neurologists and radiologists with enhanced diagnostic capabilities. Moreover, new MRI sequences and higher-field-strength scanners will offer improved resolution and anatomical detail for precise FCD characterization. Structural-response reconstruction is of great importance to enrich monitoring data for better understanding of the structural operation status. In this paper, a data-driven based structural-response reconstruction approach by generating response data via a convolutional process is proposed. A conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) is employed to establish the spatial relationship between the global and local response in the form of a response nephogram. In this way, the reconstruction process will be independent of the physical modeling of the engineering problem. The validation via experiment of a steel frame in the lab and an in situ bridge test reveals that the reconstructed responses are of high accuracy. Image inpainting is an active area of research in image processing that focuses on reconstructing damaged or missing parts of an image. The advent of deep learning has greatly advanced the field of image restoration in recent years. While there are many existing methods that can produce high-quality restoration results, they often struggle when dealing with images that have large missing areas, resulting in blurry and artifact-filled outcomes. This is primarily because of the presence of invalid information in the inpainting region, which interferes with the inpainting process. To tackle this challenge, the paper proposes a novel approach called separable mask update convolution. This technique automatically learns and updates the mask, which represents the missing area, to better control the influence of invalid information within the mask area on the restoration results. Furthermore, this convolution method reduces the number of network parameters and the size of the model. The paper also introduces a regional normalization technique that collaborates with separable mask update convolution layers for improved feature extraction, thereby enhancing the quality of the restored image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performs well in restoring images with large missing areas and outperforms state-of-the-art image inpainting methods significantly in terms of image quality. Efficient detection and evaluation of soybean seedling emergence is an important measure for making field management decisions. However, there are many indicators related to emergence, and using multiple models to detect them separately makes data processing too slow to aid timely field management. In this study, we aimed to integrate several deep learning and image processing methods to build a model to evaluate multiple soybean seedling emergence information. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was used to acquire soybean seedling RGB images at emergence (VE), cotyledon (VC), and first node (V1) stages. The number of soybean seedlings that emerged was obtained by the seedling emergence detection module, and image datasets were constructed using the seedling automatic cutting module. The improved AlexNet was used as the backbone network of the growth stage discrimination module. The above modules were combined to calculate the emergence proportion in each stage and determine soybean seedlings emergence uniformity. The results show that the seedling emergence detection module was able to identify the number of soybean seedlings with an average accuracy of 99.92%, a R2 of 0.9784, a RMSE of 6.07, and a MAE of 5.60. The improved AlexNet was more lightweight, training time was reduced, the average accuracy was 99.07%, and the average loss was 0.0355. The model was validated in the field, and the error between predicted and real emergence proportions was up to 0.0775 and down to 0.0060. It provides an effective ensemble learning model for the detection and evaluation of soybean seedling emergence, which can provide a theoretical basis for making decisions on soybean field management and precision operations and has the potential to evaluate other crops emergence information. With the increase in urban rail transit construction, instances of tunnel disease are on the rise, and cracks have become the focus of tunnel maintenance and management. Therefore, it is essential to carry out crack detection in a timely and efficient manner to not only prolong the service life of the tunnel but also reduce the incidence of accidents. In this paper, the design and structure of a tunnel crack detection system are analyzed. On this basis, this paper proposes a new method for crack identification and feature detection using image processing technology. This method fully considers the characteristics of tunnel images and the combination of these characteristics with deep learning, while a deep convolutional network (Single-Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD)) is proposed based on deep learning for object detection in complex images. The experimental results show that the test set accuracy and training set accuracy of the support vector machine (SVM) in the classification comparison test are up to 88% and 87.8%, respectively; while the test accuracy of Alexnet's deep convolutional neural network-based classification and identification is up to 96.7%, and the training set accuracy is up to 97.5%. It can be seen that this deep convolutional network recognition algorithm based on deep learning and image processing is better and more suitable for the detection of cracks in subway tunnels. Optical neural networks can effectively address hardware constraints and parallel computing efficiency issues inherent in electronic neural networks. However, the inability to implement convolutional neural networks at the all-optical level remains a hurdle. In this work, we propose an optical diffractive convolutional neural network (ODCNN) that is capable of performing image processing tasks in computer vision at the speed of light. We explore the application of the 4f system and the diffractive deep neural network (D 2 NN) in neural networks. ODCNN is then simulated by combining the 4f system as an optical convolutional layer and the diffractive networks. We also examine the potential impact of nonlinear optical materials on this network. Numerical simulation results show that the addition of convolutional layers and nonlinear functions improves the classification accuracy of the network. The affective state of a person can be measured using arousal and valence values. In this article, we contribute to the prediction of arousal and valence values from various data sources. Our goal is to later use such predictive models to adaptively adjust virtual reality (VR) environments and help facilitate cognitive remediation exercises for users with mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia, while avoiding discouragement. Building on our previous work on physiological, electrodermal activity (EDA) and electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings, we propose improving preprocessing and adding novel feature selection and decision fusion processes. We use video recordings as an additional data source for predicting affective states. We implement an innovative solution based on a combination of machine learning models alongside a series of preprocessing steps. We test our approach on RECOLA, a publicly available dataset. The best results are obtained with a concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.996 for arousal and 0.998 for valence using physiological data. Related work in the literature reported lower CCCs on the same data modality; thus, our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches for RECOLA. In the context of Shared Autonomous Vehicles, the need to monitor the environment inside the car will be crucial. This article focuses on the application of deep learning algorithms to present a fusion monitoring solution which was three different algorithms: a violent action detection system, which recognizes violent behaviors between passengers, a violent object detection system, and a lost items detection system. Public datasets were used for object detection algorithms (COCO and TAO) to train state-of-the-art algorithms such as YOLOv5. For violent action detection, the MoLa InCar dataset was used to train on state-of-the-art algorithms such as I3D, R(2+1)D, SlowFast, TSN, and TSM. Bridge deck pavement damage has a significant effect on the driving safety and long-term durability of bridges. To achieve the damage detection and localization of bridge deck pavement, a three-stage detection method based on the you-only-look-once version 7 (YOLOv7) network and the revised LaneNet was proposed in this study. In stage 1, the Road Damage Dataset 202 (RDD2022) is preprocessed and adopted to train the YOLOv7 model, and five classes of damage were obtained. In stage 2, the LaneNet network was pruned to retain the semantic segmentation part, with the VGG16 network as an encoder to generate lane line binary images. In stage 3, the lane line binary images were post-processed by a proposed image processing algorithm to obtain the lane area. Based on the damage coordinates from stage 1, the final pavement damage classes and lane localization were obtained. The proposed method was compared and analyzed in the RDD2022 dataset, and was applied on the Fourth Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge in China. The results shows that the mean average precision (mAP) of YOLOv7 on the preprocessed RDD2022 dataset reaches 0.663, higher than that of other models in the YOLO series. The accuracy of the lane localization of the revised LaneNet is 0.933, higher than that of instance segmentation, 0.856. Meanwhile, the inference speed of the revised LaneNet is 12.3 frames per second (FPS) on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, higher than that of instance segmentation 6.53 FPS. A significant majority of the population in India makes their living through agriculture. Different illnesses that develop due to changing weather patterns and are caused by pathogenic organisms impact the yields of diverse plant species. The present article analyzed some of the existing techniques in terms of data sources, pre-processing techniques, feature extraction techniques, data augmentation techniques, models utilized for detecting and classifying diseases that affect the plant, how the quality of images was enhanced, how overfitting of the model was reduced, and accuracy. The research papers for this study were selected using various keywords from peer-reviewed publications from various databases published between 2010 and 2022. A total of 182 papers were identified and reviewed for their direct relevance to plant disease detection and classification, of which 75 papers were selected for this review after exclusion based on the title, abstract, conclusion, and full text. In response to the difficulty of traditional image processing methods to quickly and accurately extract regions of interest from non-contact dorsal hand vein images in complex backgrounds, this study proposes a model based on an improved U-Net for dorsal hand keypoint detection. The residual module was added to the downsampling path of the U-Net network to solve the model degradation problem and improve the feature information extraction ability of the network; the Jensen–Shannon (JS) divergence loss function was used to supervise the final feature map distribution so that the output feature map tended to Gaussian distribution and improved the feature map multi-peak problem; and Soft-argmax is used to calculate the keypoint coordinates of the final feature map to realize end-to-end training. The experimental results showed that the accuracy of the improved U-Net network model reached 98.6%, which was 1% better than the original U-Net network model; the improved U-Net network model file was only 1.16 M, which achieved a higher accuracy than the original U-Net network model with significantly reduced model parameters. Therefore, the improved U-Net model in this study can realize dorsal hand keypoint detection (for region of interest extraction) for non-contact dorsal hand vein images and is suitable for practical deployment in low-resource platforms such as edge-embedded systems. Infrared thermography (IRT), is one of the most interesting techniques to identify different kinds of defects, such as delamination and damage existing for quality management of material. Objective detection and segmentation algorithms in deep learning have been widely applied in image processing, although very rarely in the IRT field. In this paper, spatial deep-learning image processing methods for defect detection and identification were discussed and investigated. The aim in this work is to integrate such deep-learning (DL) models to enable interpretations of thermal images automatically for quality management (QM). That requires achieving a high enough accuracy for each deep-learning method so that they can be used to assist human inspectors based on the training. There are several alternatives of deep Convolutional Neural Networks for detecting the images that were employed in this work. These included: 1. The instance segmentation methods Mask–RCNN (Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks) and Center–Mask; 2. The independent semantic segmentation methods: U-net and Resnet–U-net; 3. The objective localization methods: You Only Look Once (YOLO-v3) and Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (Fast-er-RCNN). This research article is aimed at improving the efficiency of a computer vision system that uses image processing for detecting cracks. Images are prone to noise when captured using drones or under various lighting conditions. To analyze this, the images were gathered under various conditions. To address the noise issue and to classify the cracks based on the severity level, a novel technique is proposed using a pixel-intensity resemblance measurement (PIRM) rule. Using PIRM, the noisy images and noiseless images were classified. Then, the noise was filtered using a median filter. The cracks were detected using VGG-16, ResNet-50 and InceptionResNet-V2 models. Once the crack was detected, the images were then segregated using a crack risk-analysis algorithm. Based on the severity level of the crack, an alert can be given to the authorized person to take the necessary action to avoid major accidents. The proposed technique achieved a 6% improvement without PIRM and a 10% improvement with the PIRM rule for the VGG-16 model. Similarly, it showed 3 and 10% for ResNet-50, 2 and 3% for Inception ResNet and a 9 and 10% increment for the Xception model. When the images were corrupted from a single noise alone, 95.6% accuracy was achieved using the ResNet-50 model for Gaussian noise, 99.65% accuracy was achieved through Inception ResNet-v2 for Poisson noise, and 99.95% accuracy was achieved by the Xception model for speckle noise. In chemical processes, packed columns are frequently employed in various unit operations. However, the flow rates of gas and liquid in these columns are often constrained by the risk of flooding. To ensure the safe and efficient operation of packed columns, it is crucial to detect flooding in real time. Conventional flooding monitoring methods rely heavily on manual visual inspections or indirect information from process variables, which limit the real-time accuracy of results. To address this challenge, we proposed a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based machine vision approach for non-destructive detection of flooding in packed columns. Real-time images of the packed column were captured using a digital camera and analyzed with a CNN model, which was been trained on a dataset of recorded images to identify flooding. The proposed approach was compared with deep belief networks and an integrated approach of principal component analysis and support vector machines. The feasibility and advantages of the proposed method were demonstrated through experiments on a real packed column. Quality inspection in the industrial production field is experiencing a strong technological development that benefits from the combination of vision-based techniques with artificial intelligence algorithms. This paper initially addresses the problem of defect identification for circularly symmetric mechanical components, characterized by the presence of periodic elements. In the specific case of knurled washers, we compare the performances of a standard algorithm for the analysis of grey-scale image with a Deep Learning (DL) approach. The standard algorithm is based on the extraction of pseudo-signals derived from the conversion of the grey scale image of concentric annuli. In the DL approach, the component inspection is shifted from the entire sample to specific areas repeated along the object profile where the defect may occur. The standard algorithm provides better results in terms of accuracy and computational time with respect to the DL approach. Nevertheless, DL reaches accuracy higher than 99% when performance is evaluated targeting the identification of damaged teeth. The paper discusses the problem of detecting emission sources in a low buildings area using unmanned aerial vehicles. The problem was analyzed, and methods of solving it were presented. Various data acquisition scenarios and their impact on the feasibility of the task were analyzed. A method for detecting smoke objects over buildings using stationary video sequences acquired with a drone in hover with the camera in the nadir position is proposed. The method uses differential frame information from stabilized video sequences and the YOLOv7 classifier. A convolutional network classifier was used to detect the roofs of buildings, using a custom training set adapted to the type of data used. Such a solution, although quite effective, is not very practical for the end user, but it enables the automatic generation of a comprehensive training set for classifiers based on deep neural networks. The effectiveness of such a solution was tested for the latest version of the YOLOv7 classifier. The tests proved the effectiveness of the described method, both for single images and video sequences. In addition, the obtained classifier correctly recognizes objects for sequences that do not meet some of the initial assumptions, such as the angle of the camera capturing the image. In the production process of steel products, it is very important to find defects, which can not only reduce the failure rate of industrial production but also can reduce economic losses. All deep learning-based methods need many labeled samples for training. However, in the industrial field, there is a lack of sufficient training samples, especially in steel surface defects. It is almost impossible to collect enough samples that can be used for training. To solve this kind of problem, different from traditional data enhancement methods, this paper constructed a data enhancement model dependent on GAN, using our designed EDCGAN to generate abundant samples that can be used for training. Finally, we mixed different proportions of the generated samples with the original samples and tested them through the MobileNet V2 classification model. The test results showed that if we added the samples generated by EDCGAN to the original samples, the classification results would gradually improve. When the ratio reaches 80%, the overall classification result reaches the highest, achieving an accuracy rate of more than 99%. Due to the tremendous expectations placed on batteries to produce a reliable and secure product, fault detection has become a critical part of the manufacturing process. Manually, it takes much labor and effort to test each battery individually for manufacturing faults including burning, welding that is too high, missing welds, shifting, welding holes, and so forth. Additionally, manual battery fault detection takes too much time and is extremely expensive. We solved this issue by using image processing and machine learning techniques to automatically detect faults in the battery manufacturing process. Our approach will reduce the need for human intervention, save time, and be easy to implement. A CMOS camera was used to collect a large number of images belonging to eight common battery manufacturing faults. The welding area of the batteries' positive and negative terminals was captured from different distances, between 40 and 50 cm. Before deploying the learning models, first, we used the CNN for feature extraction from the image data. To over-sample the dataset, we used the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) since the dataset was highly imbalanced, resulting in over-fitting of the learning model. Several machine learning and deep learning models were deployed on the CNN-extracted features and over-sampled data. Random forest achieved a significant 84% accuracy with our proposed approach. Additionally, we applied K-fold cross-validation with the proposed approach to validate the significance of the approach, and the logistic regression achieved an 81.897% mean accuracy score and a +/− 0.0255 standard deviation. Deep learning methods have achieved outstanding results in many image processing and computer vision tasks, such as image segmentation. However, they usually do not consider spatial dependencies among pixels/voxels in the image. To obtain better results, some methods have been proposed to apply classic spatial regularization, such as total variation, into deep learning models. However, for some challenging images, especially those with fine structures and low contrast, classical regularizations are not suitable. We derived a new regularization to improve the connectivity of segmentation results and make it applicable to deep learning. Our experimental results show that for both deep learning methods and unsupervised methods, the proposed method can improve performance by increasing connectivity and dealing with low contrast and, therefore, enhance segmentation results.
