The purpose of image dehazing is to remove the interference from weather factors in degraded images and enhance the clarity and color saturation of images to maximize the restoration of useful features. Single image dehazing is one of the most important tasks in the field of image restoration. In recent years, due to the progress of deep learning, single image dehazing has made great progress. With the success of Transformer in advanced computer vision tasks, some research studies also began to apply Transformer to image dehazing tasks and obtained surprising results. However, both the deconvolution-neural-network-based dehazing algorithm and Transformer based dehazing algorithm magnify their advantages and disadvantages separately. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network (TCFDN), which uses Transformer's global modeling ability and convolutional neural network's local modeling ability to improve the dehazing ability. In the Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network, the classic self-encoder structure is used. This paper proposes a Transformer–Convolution hybrid layer, which uses an adaptive fusion strategy to make full use of the Swin-Transformer and convolutional neural network to extract and reconstruct image features. On the basis of previous research, this layer further improves the ability of the network to remove haze. A series of contrast experiments and ablation experiments not only proved that the Transformer–Convolution fusion dehazing network proposed in this paper exceeded the more advanced dehazing algorithm, but also provided solid and powerful evidence for the basic theory on which it depends. Emotion recognition has become increasingly important in the field of Deep Learning (DL) and computer vision due to its broad applicability by using human–computer interaction (HCI) in areas such as psychology, healthcare, and entertainment. In this paper, we conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL and computer vision, analyzing and evaluating 77 papers from different sources under Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Our review covers several topics, including the scope and purpose of the studies, the methods employed, and the used datasets. The scope of this work is to conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL methods and computer vision. The studies were categorized based on a proposed taxonomy that describes the type of expressions used for emotion detection, the testing environment, the currently relevant DL methods, and the datasets used. The taxonomy of methods in our review includes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN), Vision Transformer (ViT), and "Other NNs", which are the most commonly used models in the analyzed studies, indicating their trendiness in the field. Hybrid and augmented models are not explicitly categorized within this taxonomy, but they are still important to the field. This review offers an understanding of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and datasets for emotion recognition through facial expressions and body poses, allowing researchers to understand its fundamental components and trends. Potholes and other road surface damages pose significant risks to vehicles and traffic safety. The current methods of in situ visual inspection for potholes or cracks are inefficient, costly, and hazardous. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop automated systems for assessing road surface conditions, aiming to efficiently and accurately reconstruct, recognize, and locate potholes. In recent years, various methods utilizing (a) computer vision, (b) three-dimensional (3D) point clouds, or (c) smartphone data have been employed to map road surface quality conditions. Machine learning and deep learning techniques have increasingly enhanced the performance of these methods. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge computer vision and machine learning algorithms for pothole detection. It covers topics such as sensing systems for acquiring two-dimensional (2D) and 3D road data, classical algorithms based on 2D image processing, segmentation-based algorithms using 3D point cloud modeling, machine learning, deep learning algorithms, and hybrid approaches. The review highlights that hybrid methods combining traditional image processing and advanced machine learning techniques offer the highest accuracy in pothole detection. Machine learning approaches, particularly deep learning, demonstrate superior adaptability and detection rates, while traditional 2D and 3D methods provide valuable baseline techniques. By reviewing and evaluating existing vision-based methods, this paper clarifies the current landscape of pothole detection technologies and identifies opportunities for future research and development. Additionally, insights provided by this review can inform the design and implementation of more robust and effective systems for automated road surface condition assessment, thereby contributing to enhanced roadway safety and infrastructure management. Precise measurement of fiber diameter in animal and synthetic textiles is crucial for quality assessment and pricing; however, traditional methods often struggle with accuracy, particularly when fibers are densely packed or overlapping. Current computer vision techniques, while useful, have limitations in addressing these challenges. This paper introduces a novel deep-learning-based method to automatically generate distance maps of fiber micrographs, enabling more accurate fiber segmentation and diameter calculation. Our approach utilizes a modified U-Net architecture, trained on both real and simulated micrographs, to regress distance maps. This allows for the effective separation of individual fibers, even in complex scenarios. The model achieves a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.1094 and a mean square error (MSE) of 0.0711 , demonstrating its effectiveness in accurately measuring fiber diameters. This research highlights the potential of deep learning to revolutionize fiber analysis in the textile industry, offering a more precise and automated solution for quality control and pricing. Abnormal valve positions can lead to fluctuations in the process industry, potentially triggering serious accidents. For processes that frequently require operational switching, such as green chemical processes based on renewable energy or biotechnological fermentation processes, this issue becomes even more severe. Despite this risk, many plants still rely on manual inspections to check valve status. The widespread use of cameras in large plants now makes it feasible to monitor valve positions through computer vision technology. This paper proposes a novel real-time valve monitoring approach based on computer vision to detect abnormalities in valve positions. Utilizing an improved network architecture based on YOLO V8, the method performs valve detection and feature recognition. To address the challenge of small, relatively fixed-position valves in the images, a coord attention module is introduced, embedding position information into the feature channels and enhancing the accuracy of valve rotation feature extraction. The valve position is then calculated using a rotation algorithm with the valve's center point and bounding box coordinates, triggering an alarm for valves that exceed a pre-set threshold. The accuracy and generalization ability of the proposed approach are evaluated through experiments on three different types of valves in two industrial scenarios. Poplar (Populus) trees play a vital role in various industries and in environmental sustainability. They are widely used for paper production, timber, and as windbreaks, in addition to their significant contributions to carbon sequestration. Given their economic and ecological importance, effective disease management is essential. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), particularly adept at processing visual information, are crucial for the accurate detection and classification of plant diseases. This study introduces a novel dataset of manually collected images of diseased poplar leaves from Uzbekistan and South Korea, enhancing the geographic diversity and application of the dataset. The disease classes consist of "Parsha (Scab)", "Brown-spotting", "White-Gray spotting", and "Rust", reflecting common afflictions in these regions. This dataset will be made publicly available to support ongoing research efforts. Employing the advanced YOLOv8 model, a state-of-the-art CNN architecture, we applied a Contrast Stretching technique prior to model training in order to enhance disease detection accuracy. This approach not only improves the model's diagnostic capabilities but also offers a scalable tool for monitoring and treating poplar diseases, thereby supporting the health and sustainability of these critical resources. The automatic detection of smoke by analyzing the video stream acquired by traditional surveillance cameras is becoming a more and more interesting problem for the scientific community thanks to the necessity to prevent fires at the very early stages. The adoption of a smart visual sensor, namely a computer vision algorithm running in real time, allows one to overcome the limitations of standard physical sensors. Nevertheless, this is a very challenging problem, due to the strong similarity of the smoke with other environmental elements like clouds, fog and dust. In addition to this challenge, data available for training deep neural networks is limited and not fully representative of real environments. Within this context, in this paper we propose a new method for smoke detection based on the combination of motion and appearance analysis with a modern convolutional neural network (CNN). Moreover, we propose a new dataset, called the MIVIA Smoke Detection Dataset (MIVIA-SDD), publicly available for research purposes; it consists of 129 videos covering about 28 h of recordings. The proposed hybrid method, trained and evaluated on the proposed dataset, demonstrated to be very effective by achieving a 94% smoke recognition rate and, at the same time, a substantially lower false positive rate if compared with fully deep learning-based approaches (14% vs. 100%). Therefore, the proposed combination of motion and appearance analysis with deep learning CNNs can be further investigated to improve the precision of fire detection approaches. Body condition scoring is an objective scoring method used to evaluate the health of a cow by determining the amount of subcutaneous fat in a cow. Automated body condition scoring is becoming vital to large commercial dairy farms as it helps farmers score their cows more often and more consistently compared to manual scoring. A common approach to automated body condition scoring is to utilise a CNN-based model trained with data from a depth camera. The approaches presented in this paper make use of three depth cameras placed at different positions near the rear of a cow to train three independent CNNs. Ensemble modelling is used to combine the estimations of the three individual CNN models. The paper aims to test the performance impact of using ensemble modelling with the data from three separate depth cameras. The paper also looks at which of these three cameras and combinations thereof provide a good balance between computational cost and performance. The results of this study show that utilising the data from three depth cameras to train three separate models merged through ensemble modelling yields significantly improved automated body condition scoring accuracy compared to a single-depth camera and CNN model approach. Traditional human-computer interaction technology relies heavily on input devices such as mice and keyboards, which limit the speed and naturalness of interaction and can no longer meet the more advanced interaction needs of users. With the development of computer vision (CV) technology, research on contactless gesture recognition has become a new research hotspot. However, current CV-based gesture recognition technology has the limitation of a limited number of gesture recognition and cannot achieve fast and accurate text input operations. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an over-the-air handwritten character recognition system based on the coordinate correction YOLOv5 algorithm and a lightweight convolutional neural network (LGR-CNN), referred to as Air-GR. Unlike the direct recognition of captured gesture pictures, the system uses the trajectory points of gesture actions to generate images for gesture recognition. Firstly, by combining YOLOv5 with the gesture coordinate correction algorithm proposed in this paper, the system can effectively improve gesture detection accuracy. Secondly, considering that the captured gesture coordinates may contain multiple gestures, this paper proposes a time-window-based algorithm for segmenting the gesture coordinates. Finally, the system recognizes user gestures by plotting the segmented gesture coordinates in a two-dimensional coordinate system and feeding them into the constructed lightweight convolutional neural network, LGR-CNN. For the gesture trajectory image classification task, the accuracy of LGR-CNN is 13.2%, 12.2%, and 4.5% higher than that of the mainstream networks VGG16, ResNet, and GoogLeNet, respectively. The experimental results show that Air-GR can quickly and effectively recognize any combination of 26 English letters and numbers, and its recognition accuracy reaches 95.24%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advancements in imaging, computer vision, and automation have revolutionized various fields, including field-based high-throughput plant phenotyping (FHTPP). This integration allows for the rapid and accurate measurement of plant traits. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool in FHTPP, particularly in crop segmentation—identifying crops from the background—crucial for trait analysis. However, the effectiveness of DCNNs often hinges on the availability of large, labeled datasets, which poses a challenge due to the high cost of labeling. In this study, a deep learning with bagging approach is introduced to enhance crop segmentation using high-resolution RGB images, tested on the NU-Spidercam dataset from maize plots. The proposed method outperforms traditional machine learning and deep learning models in prediction accuracy and speed. Remarkably, it achieves up to 40 % higher Intersection-over-Union (IoU) than the threshold method and 11 % over conventional machine learning, with significantly faster prediction times and manageable training duration. Crucially, it demonstrates that even small labeled datasets can yield high accuracy in semantic segmentation. This approach not only proves effective for FHTPP but also suggests potential for broader application in remote sensing, offering a scalable solution to semantic segmentation challenges. In recent years, computer vision has witnessed remarkable advancements in image classification, specifically in the domains of fully convolutional neural networks (FCNs) and self-attention mechanisms. Nevertheless, both approaches exhibit certain limitations. FCNs tend to prioritize local information, potentially overlooking crucial global contexts, whereas self-attention mechanisms are computationally intensive despite their adaptability. In order to surmount these challenges, this paper proposes cross-and-diagonal networks (CDNet), innovative network architecture that adeptly captures global information in images while preserving local details in a more computationally efficient manner. CDNet achieves this by establishing long-range relationships between pixels within an image, enabling the indirect acquisition of contextual information. This inventive indirect self-attention mechanism significantly enhances the network's capacity. In CDNet, a new attention mechanism named "cross and diagonal attention" is proposed. This mechanism adopts an indirect approach by integrating two distinct components, cross attention and diagonal attention. By computing attention in different directions, specifically vertical and diagonal, CDNet effectively establishes remote dependencies among pixels, resulting in improved performance in image classification tasks. Experimental results highlight several advantages of CDNet. Firstly, it introduces an indirect self-attention mechanism that can be effortlessly integrated as a module into any convolutional neural network (CNN). Additionally, the computational cost of the self-attention mechanism has been effectively reduced, resulting in improved overall computational efficiency. Lastly, CDNet attains state-of-the-art performance on three benchmark datasets for similar types of image classification networks. In essence, CDNet addresses the constraints of conventional approaches and provides an efficient and effective solution for capturing global context in image classification tasks. This paper addresses the problem of nonlinear and dotted defect detection for multi-vision-based mask inspection systems in mask manufacturing lines. As the mask production amounts increased due to the spread of COVID-19 around the world, the mask inspection systems require more efficient defect detection algorithms. However, the traditional computer vision detection algorithms suffer from various types and very small sizes of the nonlinear and dotted defects on masks. This paper proposes a deep learning-based mask defect detection method, which includes a convolutional neural network (CNN) and efficient preprocessing. The proposed method was developed to be applied to real manufacturing systems, and thus all the training and inference processes were conducted with real data produced by real mask manufacturing systems. Crowd counting, as a basic computer vision task, plays an important role in many fields such as video surveillance, accident prediction, public security, and intelligent transportation. At present, crowd counting tasks face various challenges. Firstly, due to the diversity of crowd distribution and increasing population density, there is a phenomenon of large-scale crowd aggregation in public places, sports stadiums, and stations, resulting in very serious occlusion. Secondly, when annotating large-scale datasets, positioning errors can also easily affect training results. In addition, the size of human head targets in dense images is not consistent, making it difficult to identify both near and far targets using only one network simultaneously. The existing crowd counting methods mainly use density plot regression methods. However, this framework does not distinguish the features between distant and near targets and cannot adaptively respond to scale changes. Therefore, the detection performance in areas with sparse population distribution is not good. To solve such problems, we propose an adaptive multi-scale far and near distance network based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) framework for counting dense populations and achieving a good balance between accuracy, inference speed, and performance. However, on the feature level, in order to enable the model to distinguish the differences between near and far features, we use stacked convolution layers to deepen the depth of the network, allocate different receptive fields according to the distance between the target and the camera, and fuse the features between nearby targets to enhance the feature extraction ability of pedestrians under nearby targets. Secondly, depth information is used to distinguish distant and near targets of different scales and the original image is cut into four different patches to perform pixel-level adaptive modeling on the population. In addition, we add density normalized average precision (nAP) indicators to analyze the accuracy of our method in spatial positioning. This paper validates the effectiveness of NF-Net on three challenging benchmarks in Shanghai Tech Part A and B, UCF_ CC_50, and UCF-QNRF datasets. Compared with SOTA, it has more significant performance in various scenarios. Blurring is one of the main degradation factors in image degradation, so image deblurring is of great interest as a fundamental problem in low-level computer vision. Because of the limited receptive field, traditional CNNs lack global fuzzy region modeling, and do not make full use of rich context information between features. Recently, a transformer-based neural network structure has performed well in natural language tasks, inspiring rapid development in the field of defuzzification. Therefore, in this paper, a hybrid architecture based on CNN and transformers is used for image deblurring. Specifically, we first extract the shallow features of the blurred images using a cross-layer feature fusion block that emphasizes the contextual information of each feature extraction layer. Secondly, an efficient transformer module for extracting deep features is designed, which fully aggregates feature information at medium and long distances using vertical and horizontal intra- and inter-strip attention layers, and a dual gating mechanism is used as a feedforward neural network, which effectively reduces redundant features. Finally, the cross-layer feature fusion block is used to complement the feature information to obtain the deblurred image. Extensive experimental results on publicly available benchmark datasets GoPro, HIDE, and the real dataset RealBlur show that the proposed method outperforms the current mainstream deblurring algorithms and recovers the edge contours and texture details of the images more clearly. Image recognition has long been one of the research hotspots in computer vision tasks. The development of deep learning is rapid in recent years, and convolutional neural networks usually need to be designed with fixed resources. If sufficient resources are available, the model can be scaled up to achieve higher accuracy, for example, VggNet, ResNet, GoogLeNet, etc. Although the accuracy of large-scale models has been improved, the following problems will occur with the expansion of model scale: (1) There may be over-fitting; (2) increasing model parameters; (3) slow model convergence. This paper proposes a design method for a modular convolutional neural network model which solves the problem of over-fitting and large model parameters by connecting multiple modules in parallel. Moreover, each module contains several submodules (three submodules in this paper) and fuses the features extracted from the submodules. The model convergence can be accelerated by using the fused features (the fused features contain more image information). In this study, we add a gate unit based on the attention mechanism to the model, which aims to optimize the structure of the model (select the optimal number of modules), allowing the model to select an optimum network structure by learning and dynamically reducing FLOPs (floating-point operations per second) of the model. Compared to VggNet, ResNet, and GoogLeNet, the structure of the model proposed in this paper is simple and the parameters are small. Object detection is an essential component of autonomous mobile robotic systems, enabling robots to understand and interact with the environment. Object detection and recognition have made significant progress using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Widely used in autonomous mobile robot applications, CNNs can quickly identify complicated image patterns, such as objects in a logistic environment. Integration of environment perception algorithms and motion control algorithms is a topic subjected to significant research. On the one hand, this paper presents an object detector to better understand the robot environment and the newly acquired dataset. The model was optimized to run on the mobile platform already on the robot. On the other hand, the paper introduces a model-based predictive controller to guide an omnidirectional robot to a particular position in a logistic environment based on an object map obtained from a custom-trained CNN detector and LIDAR data. Object detection contributes to a safe, optimal, and efficient path for the omnidirectional mobile robot. In a practical scenario, we deploy a custom-trained and optimized CNN model to detect specific objects in the warehouse environment. Then we evaluate, through simulation, a predictive control approach based on the detected objects using CNNs. Results are obtained in object detection using a custom-trained CNN with an in-house acquired data set on a mobile platform and in the optimal control for the omnidirectional mobile robot. In recent decades, many cities have become densely populated due to increased urbanization, and the transportation infrastructure system has been heavily used. The downtime of important parts of the infrastructure, such as tunnels and bridges, seriously affects the transportation system's efficiency. For this reason, a safe and reliable infrastructure network is necessary for the economic growth and functionality of cities. At the same time, the infrastructure is ageing in many countries, and continuous inspection and maintenance are necessary. Nowadays, detailed inspections of large infrastructure are almost exclusively performed by inspectors on site, which is both time-consuming and subject to human errors. However, the recent technological advancements in computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics have opened up the possibilities of automated inspections. Today, semiautomatic systems such as drones and other mobile mapping systems are available to collect data and reconstruct 3D digital models of infrastructure. This significantly decreases the downtime of the infrastructure, but both damage detection and assessments of the structural condition are still manually performed, with a high impact on the efficiency and accuracy of the procedure. Ongoing research has shown that deep-learning methods, especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs) combined with other image processing techniques, can automatically detect cracks on concrete surfaces and measure their metrics (e.g., length and width). However, these techniques are still under investigation. Additionally, to use these data for automatically assessing the structure, a clear link between the metrics of the cracks and the structural condition must be established. This paper presents a review of the damage of tunnel concrete lining that is detectable with optical instruments. Thereafter, state-of-the-art autonomous tunnel inspection methods are presented with a focus on innovative mobile mapping systems for optimizing data collection. Deep Learning (DL) has provided a significant breakthrough in many areas of research and industry. The development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has enabled the improvement of computer vision-based techniques, making the information gathered from cameras more useful. For this reason, recently, studies have been carried out on the use of image-based DL in some areas of people's daily life. In this paper, an object detection-based algorithm is proposed to modify and improve the user experience in relation to the use of cooking appliances. The algorithm can sense common kitchen objects and identify interesting situations for users. Some of these situations are the detection of utensils on lit hobs, recognition of boiling, smoking and oil in kitchenware, and determination of good cookware size adjustment, among others. In addition, the authors have achieved sensor fusion by using a cooker hob with Bluetooth connectivity, so it is possible to automatically interact with it via an external device such as a computer or a mobile phone. Our main contribution focuses on supporting people when they are cooking, controlling heaters, or alerting them with different types of alarms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a YOLO algorithm has been used to control the cooktop by means of visual sensorization. Moreover, this research paper provides a comparison of the detection performance among different YOLO networks. Additionally, a dataset of more than 7500 images has been generated and multiple data augmentation techniques have been compared. The results show that YOLOv5s can successfully detect common kitchen objects with high accuracy and fast speed, and it can be employed for realistic cooking environment applications. As a fundamental but difficult topic in computer vision, 3D object segmentation has various applications in medical image analysis, autonomous vehicles, robotics, virtual reality, lithium battery image analysis, etc. In the past, 3D segmentation was performed using hand-made features and design techniques, but these techniques could not generalize to vast amounts of data or reach acceptable accuracy. Deep learning techniques have lately emerged as the preferred method for 3D segmentation jobs as a result of their extraordinary performance in 2D computer vision. Our proposed method used a CNN-based architecture called 3D UNET, which is inspired by the famous 2D UNET that has been used to segment volumetric image data. To see the internal changes of composite materials, for instance, in a lithium battery image, it is necessary to see the flow of different materials and follow the directions analyzing the inside properties. In this paper, a combination of 3D UNET and VGG19 has been used to conduct a multiclass segmentation of publicly available sandstone datasets to analyze their microstructures using image data based on four different objects in the samples of volumetric data. In our image sample, there are a total of 448 2D images, which are then aggregated as one 3D volume to examine the 3D volumetric data. The solution involves the segmentation of each object in the volume data and further analysis of each object to find its average size, area percentage, total area, etc. The open-source image processing package IMAGEJ is used for further analysis of individual particles. In this study, it was demonstrated that convolutional neural networks can be trained to recognize sandstone microstructure traits with an accuracy of 96.78% and an IOU of 91.12%. According to our knowledge, many prior works have applied 3D UNET for segmentation, but very few papers extend it further to show the details of particles in the sample. The proposed solution offers a computational insight for real-time implementation and is discovered to be superior to the current state-of-the-art methods. This paper describes the implementation of a solution for detecting the machining defects from an engine block, in the piston chamber. The solution was developed for an automotive manufacturer and the main goal of the implementation is the replacement of the visual inspection performed by a human operator with a computer vision application. We started by exploring different machine vision applications used in the manufacturing environment for several types of operations, and how machine learning is being used in robotic industrial applications. The solution implementation is re-using hardware that is already available at the manufacturing plant and decommissioned from another system. The re-used components are the cameras, the IO (Input/Output) Ethernet module, sensors, cables, and other accessories. The hardware will be used in the acquisition of the images, and for processing, a new system will be implemented with a human–machine interface, user controls, and communication with the main production line. Automatic defects inspection and classification demonstrate significant importance in improving quality in the steel industry. This paper proposed and developed DSTEELNet convolution neural network (CNN) architecture to improve detection accuracy and the required time to detect defects in surface steel strips. DSTEELNet includes three parallel stacks of convolution blocks with atrous spatial pyramid pooling. Each convolution block used a different dilation rate that expands the receptive fields, increases the feature resolutions and covers square regions of input 2D image without any holes or missing edges and without increases in computations. This work illustrates the performance of DSTEELNet with a different number of parallel stacks and a different order of dilation rates. The experimental results indicate significant improvements in accuracy and illustrate that the DSTEELNet achieves of 97% mAP in detecting defects in surface steel strips on the augmented dataset GNEU and Severstal datasets and is able to detect defects in a single image in 23ms. Target detection has always been a hotspot in image processing/computer vision research, and small-target detection is a frequently encountered problem in the field of target detection. With the continuous innovation of target detection technology, people always hope that the detection of small targets can reach the real-time accuracy of large-target detection. In this paper, a small-target detection model based on dual-core convolutional neural networks (CNN) is proposed, which is mainly used for the intelligent detection of books in the production line of printed books. The model is mainly composed of two modules, including a region prediction module and suspicious target search module. The region prediction module uses a CNN to predict suspicious region blocks in a large context. The suspicious target search module uses a different CNN from the above to find tiny targets in the predicted region blocks. The presented paper investigates the problem of endoscopic bleeding detection in endoscopic videos in the form of a binary image classification task. A set of definitions of high-level visual features of endoscopic bleeding is introduced, which incorporates domain knowledge from the field. The high-level features are coupled with respective feature descriptors, enabling automatic capture of the features using image processing methods. Each of the proposed feature descriptors outputs a feature activation map in the form of a grayscale image. Acquired feature maps can be appended in a straightforward way to the original color channels of the input image and passed to the input of a convolutional neural network during the training and inference steps. An experimental evaluation is conducted to compare the classification ROC AUC of feature-extended convolutional neural network models with baseline models using regular color image inputs. With the recent rise in violent crime, the real-time situation analysis capabilities of the prevalent closed-circuit television have been employed for the deterrence and resolution of criminal activities. Anomaly detection can identify abnormal instances such as violence within the patterns of a specified dataset; however, it faces challenges in that the dataset for abnormal situations is smaller than that for normal situations. Herein, using datasets such as UBI-Fights, RWF-2000, and UCSD Ped1 and Ped2, anomaly detection was approached as a binary classification problem. Frames extracted from each video with annotation were reconstructed into a limited number of images of 3 × 3 , 4 × 3 , 4 × 4 , 5 × 3 sizes using the method proposed in this paper, forming an input data structure similar to a light field and patch of vision transformer. The model was constructed by applying a convolutional block attention module that included channel and spatial attention modules to a residual neural network with depths of 10, 18, 34, and 50 in the form of a three-dimensional convolution. The proposed model performed better than existing models in detecting abnormal behavior such as violent acts in videos. For instance, with the undersampled UBI-Fights dataset, our network achieved an accuracy of 0.9933, a loss value of 0.0010, an area under the curve of 0.9973, and an equal error rate of 0.0027. These results may contribute significantly to solve real-world issues such as the detection of violent behavior in artificial intelligence systems using computer vision and real-time video monitoring. Image stitching involves combining multiple images of the same scene captured from different viewpoints into a single image with an expanded field of view. While this technique has various applications in computer vision, traditional methods rely on the successive stitching of image pairs taken from multiple cameras. While this approach is effective for organized camera arrays, it can pose challenges for unstructured ones, especially when handling scene overlaps. This paper presents a deep learning-based approach for stitching images from large unstructured camera sets covering complex scenes. Our method processes images concurrently by using the SandFall algorithm to transform data from multiple cameras into a reduced fixed array, thereby minimizing data loss. A customized convolutional neural network then processes these data to produce the final image. By stitching images simultaneously, our method avoids the potential cascading errors seen in sequential pairwise stitching while offering improved time efficiency. In addition, we detail an unsupervised training method for the network utilizing metrics from Generative Adversarial Networks supplemented with supervised learning. Our testing revealed that the proposed approach operates in roughly ∼1/7th the time of many traditional methods on both CPU and GPU platforms, achieving results consistent with established methods. Currently, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are widely used for processing and analyzing image or video data, and an essential part of state-of-the-art studies rely on training different CNN architectures. They have broad applications, such as image classification, semantic segmentation, or face recognition. Regardless of the application, one of the important factors influencing network performance is the use of a reliable, well-labeled dataset in the training stage. Most of the time, especially if we talk about semantic classification, labeling is time and resource-consuming and must be done manually by a human operator. This article proposes an automatic label generation method based on the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) unsupervised clustering technique. The other main contribution of this paper is the optimization of the hyperparameters of the traditional U-Net model to achieve a balance between high performance and the least complex structure for implementing a low-cost system. The results showed that the proposed method decreased the resources needed, computation time, and model complexity while maintaining accuracy. Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) aims to mitigate the performance drop due to the distribution shift between the training and testing datasets. UDA methods have achieved performance gains for models trained on a source domain with labeled data to a target domain with only unlabeled data. The standard feature extraction method in domain adaptation has been convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Recently, attention-based transformer models have emerged as effective alternatives for computer vision tasks. In this paper, we benchmark three attention-based architectures, specifically vision transformer (ViT), shifted window transformer (SWIN), and dual attention vision transformer (DAViT), against convolutional architectures ResNet, HRNet and attention-based ConvNext, to assess the performance of different backbones for domain generalization and adaptation. We incorporate these backbone architectures as feature extractors in the source hypothesis transfer (SHOT) framework for UDA. SHOT leverages the knowledge learned in the source domain to align the image features of unlabeled target data in the absence of source domain data, using self-supervised deep feature clustering and self-training. We analyze the generalization and adaptation performance of these models on standard UDA datasets and aerial UDA datasets. In addition, we modernize the training procedure commonly seen in UDA tasks by adding image augmentation techniques to help models generate richer features. Our results show that ConvNext and SWIN offer the best performance, indicating that the attention mechanism is very beneficial for domain generalization and adaptation with both transformer and convolutional architectures. Diabetes has emerged as a worldwide health crisis, affecting approximately 537 million adults. Maintaining blood glucose requires careful observation of diet, physical activity, and adherence to medications if necessary. Diet monitoring historically involves keeping food diaries; however, this process can be labor-intensive, and recollection of food items may introduce errors. Automated technologies such as food image recognition systems (FIRS) can make use of computer vision and mobile cameras to reduce the burden of keeping diaries and improve diet tracking. These tools provide various levels of diet analysis, and some offer further suggestions for improving the nutritional quality of meals. Blind image deblurring is a challenging problem in computer vision, aiming to restore the sharp image from blurred observation. Due to the incompatibility between the complex unknown degradation and the simple synthetic model, directly training a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) usually cannot sufficiently handle real-world blurry images. An existed generative adversarial network (GAN) can generate more detailed and realistic images, but the game between generator and discriminator is unbalancing, which leads to the training parameters not being able to converge to the ideal Nash equilibrium points. In this paper, we propose a GAN with a dual-branch discriminator using multiple sparse priors for image deblurring (DBSGAN) to overcome this limitation. By adding the multiple sparse priors into the other branch of the discriminator, the task of the discriminator is more complex. It can balance the game between the generator and the discriminator. Extensive experimental results on both synthetic and real-world blurry image datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our method over the state of the art in terms of quantitative metrics and visual quality. Power distribution grids are typically installed outdoors and are exposed to environmental conditions. When contamination accumulates in the structures of the network, there may be shutdowns caused by electrical arcs. To improve the reliability of the network, visual inspections of the electrical power system can be carried out; these inspections can be automated using computer vision techniques based on deep neural networks. Based on this need, this paper proposes the Semi-ProtoPNet deep learning model to classify defective structures in the power distribution networks. The Semi-ProtoPNet deep neural network does not perform convex optimization of its last dense layer to maintain the impact of the negative reasoning process on image classification. The negative reasoning process rejects the incorrect classes of an input image; for this reason, it is possible to carry out an analysis with a low number of images that have different backgrounds, which is one of the challenges of this type of analysis. Video anomaly event detection (VAED) is one of the key technologies in computer vision for smart surveillance systems. With the advent of deep learning, contemporary advances in VAED have achieved substantial success. Recently, weakly supervised VAED (WVAED) has become a popular VAED technical route of research. WVAED methods do not depend on a supplementary self-supervised substitute task, yet they can assess anomaly scores straightway. However, the performance of WVAED methods depends on pretrained feature extractors. In this paper, we first address taking advantage of two pretrained feature extractors for CNN (e.g., C3D and I3D) and ViT (e.g., CLIP), for effectively extracting discerning representations. We then consider long-range and short-range temporal dependencies and put forward video snippets of interest by leveraging our proposed temporal self-attention network (TSAN). We design a multiple instance learning (MIL)-based generalized architecture named CNN-ViT-TSAN, by using CNN- and/or ViT-extracted features and TSAN to specify a series of models for the WVAED problem. Three-dimensional face recognition is an important part of the field of computer vision. Point clouds are widely used in the field of 3D vision due to the simple mathematical expression. However, the disorder of the points makes it difficult for them to have ordered indexes in convolutional neural networks. In addition, the point clouds lack detailed textures, which makes the facial features easily affected by expression or head pose changes. To solve the above problems, this paper constructs a new face recognition network, which mainly consists of two parts. The first part is a novel operator based on a local feature descriptor to realize the fine-grained features extraction and the permutation invariance of point clouds. The second part is a feature enhancement mechanism to enhance the discrimination of facial features. In order to verify the performance of our method, we conducted experiments on three public datasets: CASIA-3D, Bosphorus, and Lock3Dface. Object detection is a fundamental task in computer vision. Over the past several years, convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection models have significantly improved detection accuracyin terms of average precision (AP). Furthermore, feature pyramid networks (FPNs) are essential modules for object detection models to consider various object scales. However, the AP for small objects is lower than the AP for medium and large objects. It is difficult to recognize small objects because they do not have sufficient information, and information is lost in deeper CNN layers. This paper proposes a new FPN model named ssFPN (scale sequence (S 2 ) feature-based feature pyramid network) to detect multi-scale objects, especially small objects. We propose a new scale sequence (S 2 ) feature that is extracted by 3D convolution on the level of the FPN. It is defined and extracted from the FPN to strengthen the information on small objects based on scale-space theory. Motivated by this theory, the FPN is regarded as a scale space and extracts a scale sequence (S 2 ) feature by three-dimensional convolution on the level axis of the FPN. The defined feature is basically scale-invariant and is built on a high-resolution pyramid feature map for small objects. Additionally, the deigned S 2 feature can be extended to most object detection models based on FPNs. We also designed a feature-level super-resolution approach to show the efficiency of the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature. We verified that the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature could improve the classification accuracy for low-resolution images by training a feature-level super-resolution model. To demonstrate the effect of the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature, experiments on the scale sequence (S 2 ) feature built-in object detection approach including both one-stage and two-stage models were conducted on the MS COCO dataset. For the two-stage object detection models Faster R-CNN and Mask R-CNN with the S 2 feature, AP improvements of up to 1.6% and 1.4%, respectively, were achieved. Additionally, the AP S of each model was improved by 1.2% and 1.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the one-stage object detection models in the YOLO series were improved. For YOLOv4-P5, YOLOv4-P6, YOLOR-P6, YOLOR-W6, and YOLOR-D6 with the S 2 feature, 0.9%, 0.5%, 0.5%, 0.1%, and 0.1% AP improvements were observed. For small object detection, the AP S increased by 1.1%, 1.1%, 0.9%, 0.4%, and 0.1%, respectively. Experiments using the feature-level super-resolution approach with the proposed scale sequence (S 2 ) feature were conducted on the CIFAR-100 dataset. By training the feature-level super-resolution model, we verified that ResNet-101 with the S 2 feature trained on LR images achieved a 55.2% classification accuracy, which was 1.6% higher than for ResNet-101 trained on HR images. Gaze estimation is an established research problem in computer vision. It has various applications in real life, from human–computer interactions to health care and virtual reality, making it more viable for the research community. Due to the significant success of deep learning techniques in other computer vision tasks—for example, image classification, object detection, object segmentation, and object tracking—deep learning-based gaze estimation has also received more attention in recent years. This paper uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) for person-specific gaze estimation. The person-specific gaze estimation utilizes a single model trained for one individual user, contrary to the commonly-used generalized models trained on multiple people's data. We utilized only low-quality images directly collected from a standard desktop webcam, so our method can be applied to any computer system equipped with such a camera without additional hardware requirements. First, we used the web camera to collect a dataset of face and eye images. Then, we tested different combinations of CNN parameters, including the learning and dropout rates. Our findings show that building a person-specific eye-tracking model produces better results with a selection of good hyperparameters when compared to universal models that are trained on multiple users' data. In particular, we achieved the best results for the left eye with 38.20 MAE (Mean Absolute Error) in pixels, the right eye with 36.01 MAE, both eyes combined with 51.18 MAE, and the whole face with 30.09 MAE, which is equivalent to approximately 1.45 degrees for the left eye, 1.37 degrees for the right eye, 1.98 degrees for both eyes combined, and 1.14 degrees for full-face images. It is considered that 1 in 10 adults worldwide have diabetes. Diabetic foot ulcers are some of the most common complications of diabetes, and they are associated with a high risk of lower-limb amputation and, as a result, reduced life expectancy. Timely detection and periodic ulcer monitoring can considerably decrease amputation rates. Recent research has demonstrated that computer vision can be used to identify foot ulcers and perform non-contact telemetry by using ulcer and tissue area segmentation. However, the applications are limited to controlled lighting conditions, and expert knowledge is required for dataset annotation. This paper reviews the latest publications on the use of artificial intelligence for ulcer area detection and segmentation. The PRISMA methodology was used to search for and select articles, and the selected articles were reviewed to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Qualitative data were used to describe the methodologies used in individual studies, while quantitative data were used for generalization in terms of dataset preparation and feature extraction. Publicly available datasets were accounted for, and methods for preprocessing, augmentation, and feature extraction were evaluated. It was concluded that public datasets can be used to form a bigger, more diverse datasets, and the prospects of wider image preprocessing and the adoption of augmentation require further research. Human action recognition (HAR) is one of the most active research topics in the field of computer vision. Even though this area is well-researched, HAR algorithms such as 3D Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), Two-stream Networks, and CNN-LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) suffer from highly complex models. These algorithms involve a huge number of weights adjustments during the training phase, and as a consequence, require high-end configuration machines for real-time HAR applications. Therefore, this paper presents an extraneous frame scrapping technique that employs 2D skeleton features with a Fine-KNN classifier-based HAR system to overcome the dimensionality problems.To illustrate the efficacy of our proposed method, two contemporary datasets i.e., Multi-Camera Action Dataset (MCAD) and INRIA Xmas Motion Acquisition Sequences (IXMAS) dataset was used in experiment. We used the OpenPose technique to extract the 2D information, The proposed method was compared with CNN-LSTM, and other State of the art methods. Anomalous road manhole covers pose a potential risk to road safety in cities. In the development of smart cities, computer vision techniques use deep learning to automatically detect anomalous manhole covers to avoid these risks. One important problem is that a large amount of data are required to train a road anomaly manhole cover detection model. The number of anomalous manhole covers is usually small, which makes it a challenge to create training datasets quickly. To expand the dataset and improve the generalization of the model, researchers usually copy and paste samples from the original data to other data in order to achieve data augmentation. In this paper, we propose a new data augmentation method, which uses data that do not exist in the original dataset as samples to automatically select the pasting position of manhole cover samples and predict the transformation parameters via visual prior experience and perspective transformations, making it more accurately capture the actual shape of manhole covers on a road. There is great interest in automatically detecting road weather and understanding its impacts on the overall safety of the transport network. This can, for example, support road condition-based maintenance or even serve as detection systems that assist safe driving during adverse climate conditions. In computer vision, previous work has demonstrated the effectiveness of deep learning in predicting weather conditions from outdoor images. However, training deep learning models to accurately predict weather conditions using real-world road-facing images is difficult due to: (1) the simultaneous occurrence of multiple weather conditions; (2) imbalanced occurrence of weather conditions throughout the year; and (3) road idiosyncrasies, such as road layouts, illumination, and road objects, etc. In this paper, we explore the use of a focal loss function to force the learning process to focus on weather instances that are hard to learn with the objective of helping address data imbalances. In addition, we explore the attention mechanism for pixel-based dynamic weight adjustment to handle road idiosyncrasies using state-of-the-art vision transformer models. Experiments with a novel multi-label road weather dataset show that focal loss significantly increases the accuracy of computer vision approaches for imbalanced weather conditions. Furthermore, vision transformers outperform current state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks in predicting weather conditions with a validation accuracy of 92% and an F1-score of 81.22%, which is impressive considering the imbalanced nature of the dataset. An efficient road damage detection system can reduce the risk of road defects to motorists and road maintenance costs to traffic management authorities, for which a lightweight end-to-end road damage detection network is proposed in this paper, aiming at fast and automatic accurate identification and classification of multiple types of road damage. The proposed technique consists of a backbone network based on a combination of lightweight feature detection modules constituted with a multi-scale feature fusion network, which is more beneficial for target identification and classification at different distances and angles than other studies. An embedded lightweight attention module was also developed that can enhance feature information by assigning weights to multi-scale convolutional kernels to improve detection accuracy with fewer parameters. The proposed model generally has higher performance and fewer parameters than other representative models. Modern wheelchairs, with advanced and robotic technologies, could not reach the life of millions of disabled people due to their high costs, technical limitations, and safety issues. This paper proposes a gesture-controlled smart wheelchair system with an IoT-enabled fall detection mechanism to overcome these problems. It can recognize gestures using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model along with computer vision algorithms and can control the wheelchair automatically by utilizing these gestures. With a large number of Local Binary Patterns (LBP) variants being currently used today, the significant and importance of visual descriptors in computer vision applications are prominent. This paper presents a novel visual descriptor, i.e., SIM-LBP. It employs a new matrix technique called the Symmetric Inline Matrix generator method, which acts as a new variant of LBP. The key feature that separates our variant from existing counterparts is that our variant is very efficient in extracting facial expression features like eyes, eye brows, nose and mouth in a wide range of lighting conditions. For testing our model, we applied SIM-LBP on the JAFFE dataset to convert all the images to its corresponding SIM-LBP transformed variant. These transformed images are then used to train a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) based deep learning model for facial expressions recognition (FER). Several performance evaluation metrics, i.e., recognition accuracy rate, precision, recall, and F1-score, were used to test mode efficiency in comparison with those using the traditional LBP descriptor and other LBP variants. Our model outperformed in all four matrices with the proposed SIM-LBP transformation on the input images against those of baseline methods. In comparison analysis with the other state-of-the-art methods, it shows the usefulness of the proposed SIM-LBP model. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are neural networks that learn the representation of nodes and associated edges that connect it to every other node while maintaining graph representation. Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCNs), as a representative method in GNNs, in the context of computer vision, utilize conventional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to process data supported by graphs. This paper proposes a one-stage GCN approach for 3D object detection and poses estimation by structuring non-linearly distributed points of a graph. Our method proposes a keypoint attention mechanism that aggregates the relative features between each point to estimate the category and pose of the object to which the vertices of the graph belong, and also designs nine degrees of freedom of multi-object pose estimation. In addition, to avoid gimbal lock in 3D space, we use quaternion rotation, instead of Euler angle. Experimental results showed that memory usage and efficiency could be improved by aggregating point features from the point cloud and their neighbors in a graph structure. Point clouds are one of the most widely used data formats produced by depth sensors. There is a lot of research into feature extraction from unordered and irregular point cloud data. Deep learning in computer vision achieves great performance for data classification and segmentation of 3D data points as point clouds. Various research has been conducted on point clouds and remote sensing tasks using deep learning (DL) methods. However, there is a research gap in providing a road map of existing work, including limitations and challenges. This paper focuses on introducing the state-of-the-art DL models, categorized by the structure of the data they consume. The models' performance is collected, and results are provided for benchmarking on the most used datasets. Additionally, we summarize the current benchmark 3D datasets publicly available for DL training and testing. The development of the smartphone and computer vision technique provides customers with a convenient approach to identify tea species, as well as qualities. However, the prediction model may not behave robustly due to changes in illumination conditions. Fluorescence imaging can induce the fluorescence signal from typical components, and thus may improve the prediction accuracy. In this paper, a tea classification method based on fluorescence imaging and convolutional neural networks (CNN) is proposed. Ultra-violet (UV) LEDs with a central wavelength of 370 nm were utilized to induce the fluorescence of tea samples so that the fluorescence images could be captured. Five kinds of tea were included and pre-processed. Two CNN-based classification models, e.g., the VGG16 and ResNet-34, were utilized for model training. Images captured under the conventional fluorescent lamp were also tested for comparison. The results show that the accuracy of the classification model based on fluorescence images is better than those based on the white-light illumination images, and the performance of the VGG16 model is better than the ResNet-34 model in our case. The accurate intelligent identification and detection of road cracks is a key issue in road maintenance, and it has become popular to perform this task through the field of computer vision. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning-based crack detection method that initially uses the idea of image sparse representation and compressed sensing to preprocess the datasets. Only the pixels that represent the crack features remain, while most pixels of non-crack features are relatively sparse, which can significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of crack identification. The proposed method achieved good results based on the limited datasets of crack images. Various algorithms were tested, namely, linear smooth, median filtering, Gaussian smooth, and grayscale threshold, where the optimal parameters of the various algorithms were analyzed and trained with faster regions with convolutional neural network features (faster R-CNN). The results of the experiments showed that the proposed method has good robustness, with higher detection efficiency in the presence of, for example, road markings, shallow cracks, multiple cracks, and blurring. The paper presents a simple, yet robust computer vision system for robot arm tracking with the use of RGB-D cameras. Tracking means to measure in real time the robot state given by three angles and with known restrictions about the robot geometry. The tracking system consists of two parts: image preprocessing and machine learning. In the machine learning part, we compare two approaches: fitting the robot pose to the point cloud and fitting the convolutional neural network model to the sparse 3D depth images. The advantage of the presented approach is direct use of the point cloud transformed to the sparse image in the network input and use of sparse convolutional and pooling layers (sparse CNN). Deep neural networks have demonstrated the capability of solving classification problems using hierarchical models, and fuzzy image preprocessing has proven to be efficient in handling uncertainty found in images. This paper presents the combination of fuzzy image edge-detection and the usage of a convolutional neural network for a computer vision system to classify guitar types according to their body model. The focus of this investigation is to compare the effects of performing image-preprocessing techniques on raw data (non-normalized images) with different fuzzy edge-detection methods, specifically fuzzy Sobel, fuzzy Prewitt, and fuzzy morphological gradient, before feeding the images into a convolutional neural network to perform a classification task. We propose and compare two convolutional neural network architectures to solve the task. Fuzzy edge-detection techniques are compared against their classical counterparts (Sobel, Prewitt, and morphological gradient edge-detection) and with grayscale and color images in the RGB color space. The fuzzy preprocessing methodologies highlight the most essential features of each image, achieving favorable results when compared to the classical preprocessing methodologies and against a pre-trained model with both proposed models, as well as achieving a reduction in training times of more than 20% compared to RGB images. The task of reconstructing 3D scenes based on visual data represents a longstanding problem in computer vision. Common reconstruction approaches rely on the use of multiple volumetric primitives to describe complex objects. Superquadrics (a class of volumetric primitives) have shown great promise due to their ability to describe various shapes with only a few parameters. Recent research has shown that deep learning methods can be used to accurately reconstruct random superquadrics from both 3D point cloud data and simple depth images. In this paper, we extended these reconstruction methods to intensity and color images. Specifically, we used a dedicated convolutional neural network (CNN) model to reconstruct a single superquadric from the given input image. We analyzed the results in a qualitative and quantitative manner, by visualizing reconstructed superquadrics as well as observing error and accuracy distributions of predictions. We showed that a CNN model designed around a simple ResNet backbone can be used to accurately reconstruct superquadrics from images containing one object, but only if one of the spatial parameters is fixed or if it can be determined from other image characteristics, e.g., shadows. Furthermore, we experimented with images of increasing complexity, for example, by adding textures, and observed that the results degraded only slightly. In addition, we show that our model outperforms the current state-of-the-art method on the studied task. Our final result is a highly accurate superquadric reconstruction model, which can also reconstruct superquadrics from real images of simple objects, without additional training.
