The fast development of the sensors in the wireless sensor networks (WSN) brings a big challenge of low energy consumption requirements, and Peer-to-peer (P2P) communication becomes the important way to break this bottleneck. However, the interference caused by different sensors sharing the spectrum and the power limitations seriously constrains the improvement of WSN. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a deep reinforcement learning-based energy consumption optimization for P2P communication in WSN. Specifically, P2P sensors (PUs) are considered agents to share the spectrum of authorized sensors (AUs). An authorized sensor has permission to access specific data or systems, while a P2P sensor directly communicates with other sensors without needing a central server. One involves permission, the other is direct communication between sensors. Each agent can control the power and select the resources to avoid interference. Moreover, we use a double deep Q network (DDQN) algorithm to help the agent learn more detailed features of the interference. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can obtain a higher performance than the deep Q network scheme and the traditional algorithm, which can effectively lower the energy consumption for P2P communication in WSN. In this paper, we propose an improved clustering algorithm for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that aims to increase network lifetime and efficiency. We introduce an enhanced fuzzy spider monkey optimization technique and a hidden Markov model-based clustering algorithm for selecting cluster heads. Our approach considers factors such as network cluster head energy, cluster head density, and cluster head position. We also enhance the energy-efficient routing strategy for connecting cluster heads to the base station. Additionally, we introduce a polling control method to improve network performance while maintaining energy efficiency during steady transmission periods. Indoor localization of a mobile target represents a prominent application within wireless sensor network (WSN), showcasing significant values and scientific interest. Interference, obstacles, and energy consumption are critical challenges for indoor applications and battery replacements. A proposed tracking system deals with several factors such as latency, energy consumption, and accuracy presenting an innovative solution for the mobile localization application. In this paper, a novel algorithm introduces a self-localization algorithm for mobile targets using the wake-up media access control (MAC) protocol. The developed tracking application is based on the trilateration technique with received signal strength indication (RSSI) measurements. Simulations are implemented in the objective modular network testbed in C++ (OMNeT++) discrete event simulator using the C++ programming language, and the RSSI values introduced are based on real indoor measurements. In addition, a determination approach for finding the optimal parameters of RSSI is assigned to implement for the simulation parameters. Simulation results show a significant reduction in power consumption and exceptional accuracy, with an average error of 1.91 m in 90% of cases. Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) are critical to a range of applications from oceanographic data collection to submarine surveillance. In these networks, efficient energy management is critical due to the limited power resources of underwater sensors. The LEACH protocol, a popular cluster-based protocol, has been widely used in UASNs to minimize energy consumption. Despite its widespread use, the conventional LEACH protocol faces challenges such as an unoptimized cluster number and low transmission efficiency, which hinder its performance. This paper proposes an improved LEACH protocol for cluster-based UASNs, where the cluster number is optimized with an underwater energy propagation model to reduce energy consumption, and a transmission scheduling algorithm is also employed to achieve conflict-free parallel data transmission. Replication computing is introduced to the LEACH protocol to reduce the signaling in the clustering and data transmission phases. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperforms several conventional methods in terms of normalized average residual energy, average number of surviving nodes, average round when the first death node occurs, and the number of packets received by the base station. Wireless sensor network (WSN) underpinning the smart-grid Internet of Things (SG-IoT) has been a popular research topic in recent years due to its great potential for enabling a wide range of important applications. However, the energy consumption (EC) characteristic of sensor nodes is a key factor that affects the operational performance (e.g., lifetime of sensors) and the total cost of ownership of WSNs. In this paper, to find the modulation techniques suitable for WSNs, we investigate the EC characteristic of continuous phase modulation (CPM), which is an attractive modulation scheme candidate for WSNs because of its constant envelope property. We first develop an EC model for the sensor nodes of WSNs by considering the circuits and a typical communication protocol that relies on automatic repeat request (ARQ)-based retransmissions to ensure successful data delivery. Then, we use this model to analyze the EC characteristic of CPM under various configurations of modulation parameters. Furthermore, we compare the EC characteristic of CPM with that of other representative modulation schemes, such as offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), which are commonly used in communication protocols of WSNs. Our analysis and simulation results provide insights into the EC characteristics of multiple modulation schemes in the context of WSNs; thus, they are beneficial for designing energy-efficient SG-IoT in the beyond-5G (B5G) and the 6G era. Sensor networks, as a special subtype of wireless networks, consist of sets of wirelessly connected sensor nodes often placed in hard-to-reach environments. Therefore, it is expected that sensor nodes will not be powered from the power grid. Instead, sensor nodes have their own power sources, the replacement of which is often impractical and requires additional costs, so it is necessary to ensure minimum energy consumption. For that reason, the energy efficiency of wireless sensor networks used for monitoring environmental parameters is essential, especially in remote networking scenarios. In this paper, an overview of the latest research progress on wireless sensor networks based on LoRa was provided. Furthermore, analyses of energy consumption of sensor nodes used in agriculture to observe environmental parameters were conducted using the results of real measurements in the field, as well as simulations carried out based on collected data about real equipment. Optimization methods of energy consumption, in terms of choosing the appropriate data collection processes from the conducted field measurements, as well as the settings of network radio parameters imitating real conditions used in conducted simulations were highlighted. In the analyses, special emphasis was placed on choosing the optimal packet size. Unlike in other papers analyzing energy efficiency of LoRa communication, in this paper, it was proven that the adjustment of the transmission speed to the actual size of the packet is important for better energy efficiency of communication and that it can reduce energy consumption considerably. Moreover, in the paper, the contents of a packet that can be used in precision agriculture is suggested in order to prove that the 6-bit packet is sufficient for energy-efficient collection of parameters from the environment, in contrast to the 11-bit packets used in standard commercially available equipment. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered an effective data collection tool. In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient data collection problem in a UAV-enabled secure WSN without knowing the instantaneous channel state information of the eavesdropper (Eve). Specifically, the UAV collected the information from all the wireless sensors at the scheduled time and forward it to the fusion center while Eve tries to eavesdrop on this confidential information from the UAV. To surmount this intractable and convoluted mixed-integer non-convex problem, we propose an efficient iterative optimization algorithm using the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to minimize the maximum energy consumption of the ground sensor nodes (GSNs) under the constraints of secrecy outage probability (SOP), connection outage probability (COP), minimum secure data, information causality, and UAV trajectory. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs), constrained by limited resources, demand routing strategies that prioritize energy efficiency. The tactic of cooperative routing, which leverages the broadcast nature of wireless channels, has garnered attention for its capability to amplify routing efficacy. This manuscript introduces a power-conscious routing approach, tailored for resource-restricted WSNs. By exploiting cooperative communications, we introduce an innovative relay node selection technique within clustered networks, aiming to curtail energy usage while safeguarding data dependability. This inventive methodology has been amalgamated into the Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), giving rise to the cooperative and efficient routing protocol (CERP). The devised CERP protocol pinpoints and selects the most efficacious relay node, ensuring that packet transmission is both energy-minimal and reliable. Performance evaluations were executed to substantiate the proposed strategy, and its practicality was examined using an Arduino-based sensor node and the Contiki operating system in real-world scenarios. The involvement of wireless sensor networks in large-scale real-time applications is exponentially growing. These applications can range from hazardous area supervision to military applications. In such critical contexts, the simultaneous improvement of the quality of service and the network lifetime represents a big challenge. To meet these requirements, using multiple mobile sinks can be a key solution to accommodate the variations that may affect the network. Recent studies were based on predefined mobility models for sinks and relied on multi-hop routing techniques. Besides, most of these studies focused only on improving energy consumption without considering QoS metrics. In this paper, multiple mobile sinks with random mobile models are used to establish a tradeoff between power consumption and the quality of service. The simulation results show that using hierarchical data routing with random mobile sinks represents an efficient method to balance the distribution of the energy levels of nodes and to reduce the overall power consumption. Moreover, it is proven that the proposed routing methods allow for minimizing the latency of the transmitted data, increasing the reliability, and improving the throughput of the received data compared to recent works, which are based on predefined trajectories of mobile sinks and multi-hop architectures. Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) is a powerful technology that is widely used to gather data and monitor the actual environment for analysis. Furthermore, multimedia applications' needs and the features, such as constrained latency and high bandwidth consumption, complicate the design of WMSN routing protocols. Despite several methods, the trouble of designing WMSNs routing protocol remains a hurdle. The miniaturization and enhancement of hardware facilitate an extensive range of applications in the military and public sectors. On the contrary, the streaming of multimedia content is captured and generated due to some event-triggered surveillance for a long duration of time. Hence, it is necessary for wireless multimedia sensor network (WMSN) to provide a strong hardware foundation, thereby satisfying Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Initially, the network is clustered into several clusters and the nodes with rich resources are chosen as cluster heads. The significant intention of this paper is to eliminate data redundancy and to select optimal cluster heads, thereby minimizing the energy consumption. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel Fuzzy Criminal Search Ebola Optimization (FCSEO) algorithm for optimal selection of cluster heads. This paper presents a novel circularly polarized rectenna designed for efficient electromagnetic energy harvesting at the 2.45 GHz ISM band. A compact antenna structure is designed to achieve high performance in terms of radiation efficiency, axial ratio, directivity, effective area, and harmonic rejection over the entire bandwidth of the ISM frequency band. The optimized rectifier circuit enhances the RF harvested energy efficiency, with an AC-to-DC conversion efficiency ranging from 36% to 70% for low-level input power ranging from −10 dBm to 0 dBm. The stable output of DC power confirms the suitability of this design for various practical applications, including wireless sensor networks, energy harvesting power supplies, medical implants, and environmental monitoring systems. Experimental validation, which includes both the reflection coefficient and radiation patterns of the designed antenna, confirms the accuracy of the simulation. The study found that the proposed energy harvesting system has a high total efficiency ranging from 53% to 63% and is well-suited for low-power energy harvesting (0 dBm) from ambient electromagnetic radiation. The proposed circularly polarized rectenna is a competitive option for efficient electromagnetic energy harvesting, both as a standalone unit and in an array, due to its high performance, feasibility, and versatility in meeting various energy harvesting requirements. Sensor nodes are widely distributed in the Internet of Things and communicate with each other to form a wireless sensor network (WSN), which plays a vital role in people's productivity and life. However, the energy of WSN nodes is limited, so this paper proposes a two-layer WSN system based on edge computing to solve the problems of high energy consumption and short life cycle of WSN data transmission and establishes wireless energy consumption and distance optimization models for sensor networks. Specifically, we propose the optimization objective of balancing load and distance factors. We adopt an improved sparrow search algorithm to evenly distribute sensor nodes in the system to reduce resource consumption, consumption, and network life. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) enable communication among sensor nodes and require efficient energy management for optimal operation under various conditions. Key challenges include maximizing network lifetime, coverage area, and effective data aggregation and planning. A longer network lifetime contributes to improved data transfer durability, sensor conservation, and scalability. In this paper, an enhanced dual-selection krill herd (KH) optimization clustering scheme for resource-efficient WSNs with minimal overhead is introduced. The proposed approach increases overall energy utilization and reduces inter-node communication, addressing energy conservation challenges in node deployment and clustering for WSNs as optimization problems. A dynamic layering mechanism is employed to prevent repetitive selection of the same cluster head nodes, ensuring effective dual selection. Energy-efficient and reliable underwater acoustic communication attracts a lot of research due to special marine communication conditions with limited resources in underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs). In their final analysis, the existing studies focus on controlling redundant communication and route void that greatly influence UASNs' comprehensive performances. Most of them consider directional or omnidirectional transmission for partial optimization aspects, which still have many extra data loads and performance losses. This paper analyzes the main issue sources causing redundant communication in UASNs, and proposes a lightweight differentiated transmission to suppress extra communication to the greatest extent as well as balance energy consumption. First, the layered model employs layer ID to limit the scale of the data packet header, which does not need depth or location information. Second, the layered model, fuzzy-based model, random modeling and directional-omnidirectional differentiated transmission mode comb out the forwarders step by step to decrease needless duplicated forwarding. Third, forwarders are decided by local computation in nodes, which avoids exchanging controlling information among nodes. Simulation results show that our method can efficiently reduce the network load and improve the performance in terms of energy consumption balance, network lifetime, data conflict and network congestion, and data packet delivery ratio. Clustering is considered to be one of the most effective ways for energy preservation and lifetime maximization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) because the sensor nodes are equipped with limited energy. Thus, energy efficiency and energy balance have always been the main challenges faced by clustering approaches. To overcome these, a distributed particle swarm optimization-based fuzzy clustering protocol called DPFCP is proposed in this paper to reduce and balance energy consumption, to thereby extend the network lifetime as long as possible. To this end, in DPFCP cluster heads (CHs) are nominated by a Mamdani fuzzy logic system with descriptors' residual energy, node degree, distance to the base station (BS), and distance to the centroid. Moreover, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to optimize the fuzzy rules, instead of conventional manual design. Thus, the best nodes are ensured to be selected as CHs for energy reduction. Once the CHs are selected, distance to the CH, residual energy, and deviation in the CH's number of members are considered for the non-CH joining cluster in order to form energy-balanced clusters. Finally, an on-demand mechanism, instead of periodic re-clustering, is utilized to maintain clusters locally and globally based on local information, so as to further reduce computation and message overheads, thereby saving energy consumption. Compared with the existing relevant protocols, the performance of DPFCP was verified by extensive simulation experiments. The results show that, on average, DPFCP improves energy consumption by 38.20%, 15.85%, 21.15%, and 13.06% compared to LEACH, LEACH-SF, FLS-PSO, and KM-PSO, and increases network lifetime by 46.19%, 20.69%, 20.44%, and 10.99% compared to LEACH, LEACH-SF, FLS-PSO, and KM-PSO, respectively. Moreover, the standard deviation of the residual network was reduced by 61.88%, 55.36%, 54.02%, and 19.39% compared to LEACH, LEACH-SF, FLS-PSO, and KM-PSO. In event-driven wireless sensor networks (WSNs), a reliable, efficient, and scalable routing solution is required for the reliable delivery of sensory data to the base station (BS). However, existing routing algorithms rarely address the issue of energy efficiency under multi-path conflicts for multi-event-driven scenarios. In order to maximize energy efficiency while maintaining a manageable conflict probability, this paper investigates a cross-layer design of routing and power control for multi-event-driven WSNs. We first develop a mathematical characterization of the conflict probability in multi-path routing, and we then formulate the energy efficiency maximization problem as a non-convex combinatorial fractional optimization problem subject to a maximum conflict probability constraint. By utilizing non-linear fractional programming and dual decomposition, an iterative search algorithm was used to obtain near-optimal power allocation and routing solutions. Extensive results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieved a gain of 9.09 % to 35.05 % in energy efficiency compared to other routing algorithms, thus indicating that our proposed algorithm can avoid unnecessary control overhead from multi-path conflicts with a lower conflict probability and can ensure maximum energy efficiency through routing and power control design. Blockchain technology is an information security solution that operates on a distributed ledger system. Blockchain technology has considerable potential for securing Internet of Things (IoT) low-powered devices. However, the integration of IoT and blockchain technologies raises a number of research issues. One of the most important is the energy consumption of different blockchain algorithms. Because IoT devices are typically low-powered battery-powered devices, the energy consumption of any blockchain node must be kept low. IoT end nodes are typically low-powered devices expected to survive for extended periods without battery replacement. Energy consumption of blockchain algorithms is an important consideration in any application that combines both technologies, as some blockchain algorithms are infeasible because they consume large amounts of energy, causing the IoT device to reach high temperatures and potentially damaging the hardware; they are also a possible fire hazard. In this paper, we examine the temperatures reached in devices used to process blockchain algorithms, and the energy consumption of three commonly used blockchain algorithms running on low-powered microcontrollers communicating in a wireless sensor network. We found temperatures of IoT devices and energy consumption were highly correlated with the temperatures reached. The results indicate that device temperatures reached 80 °C. Security is one of the major concerns while designing robust protocols for underwater sensor networks (UWSNs). The underwater sensor node (USN) is an example of medium access control (MAC) that should control underwater UWSN, and underwater vehicles (UV) combined. Therefore, our proposed method, in this research, investigates UWSN combined with UV optimized as an underwater vehicular wireless network (UVWSN) that can completely detect malicious node attacks (MNA) from the network. Thus, MNA that engages the USN channel and launches MNA is resolved by our proposed protocol through SDAA (secure data aggregation and authentication) protocol deployed in UVWSN. SDAA protocol plays a significant role in secure data communication, as the cluster-based network design (CBND) network organization creates a concise, stable, and energy-efficient network. This paper introduces SDAA optimized network known as UVWSN. In this proposed SDAA protocol, the cluster head (CH) is authenticated through the gateway (GW) and the base station (BS) to guarantee that a legitimate USN oversees all clusters deployed in the UVWSN are securely established for providing trustworthiness/privacy. Furthermore, the communicated data in the UVWSN network guarantee that data transmission is secure due to the optimized SDAA models in the network. Thus, the USNs deployed in the UVWSN are securely confirmed to maintain secure data communication in CBND for energy efficiency. The proposed method is implemented and validated on the UVWSN for measuring reliability, delay, and energy efficiency in the network. The Internet of Things (IoT) uses wireless networks without infrastructure to install a huge number of wireless sensors that track system, physical, and environmental factors. There are a variety of WSN uses, and some well-known application factors include energy consumption and lifespan duration for routing purposes. The sensors have detecting, processing, and communication capabilities. In this paper, an intelligent healthcare system is proposed which consists of nano sensors that collect real-time health status and transfer it to the doctor's server. Time consumption and various attacks are major concerns, and some existing techniques contain stumbling blocks. Therefore, in this research, a genetic-based encryption method is advocated to protect data transmitted over a wireless channel using sensors to avoid an uncomfortable data transmission environment. An authentication procedure is also proposed for legitimate users to access the data channel. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be used to relay sensing information and computational workloads from ground users (GUs) to a remote base station (RBS) for further processing. In this paper, we employ multiple UAVs to assist with the collection of sensing information in a terrestrial wireless sensor network. All of the information collected by the UAVs can be forwarded to the RBS. We aim to improve the energy efficiency for sensing-data collection and transmission by optimizing UAV trajectory, scheduling, and access-control strategies. Considering a time-slotted frame structure, UAV flight, sensing, and information-forwarding sub-slots are confined to each time slot. This motivates the trade-off study between UAV access-control and trajectory planning. More sensing data in one time slot will take up more UAV buffer space and require a longer transmission time for information forwarding. We solve this problem by a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning approach that takes into consideration a dynamic network environment with uncertain information about the GU spatial distribution and traffic demands. We further devise a hierarchical learning framework with reduced action and state spaces to improve the learning efficiency by exploiting the distributed structure of the UAV-assisted wireless sensor network. Simulation results show that UAV trajectory planning with access control can significantly improve UAV energy efficiency. Acoustic energy mapping provides the functionality to obtain characteristics of acoustic sources, as: presence, localization, type and trajectory of sound sources. Several beamforming-based techniques can be used for this purpose. However, they rely on the difference of arrival times of the signal at each capture node (or microphone), so it is of major importance to have synchronized multi-channel recordings. A Wireless Acoustic Sensor Network (WASN) can be very practical to install when used for mapping the acoustic energy of a given acoustic environment. However, they are known for having low synchronization between the recordings from each node. The objective of this paper is to characterize the impact of current popular synchronization methodologies as part of the WASN to capture reliable data to be used for acoustic energy mapping. The two evaluated synchronization protocols are: Network Time Protocol (NTP) y Precision Time Protocol (PTP). Additionally, three different audio capture methodologies were proposed for the WASN to capture the acoustic signal: two of them, recording the data locally and one sending the data through a local wireless network. As a real-life evaluation scenario, a WASN was built using nodes conformed by a Raspberry Pi 4B+ with a single MEMS microphone. In the distributed information fusion of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the filtering accuracy is commonly negatively correlated with energy consumption. Therefore, a class of distributed consensus Kalman filters was designed to balance the contradiction between them in this paper. Firstly, an event-triggered schedule was designed based on historical data within a timeliness window. Furthermore, considering the relationship between energy consumption and communication distance, a topological transformation schedule with energy-saving is proposed. The energy-saving distributed consensus Kalman filter with a dual event-driven (or event-triggered) strategy is proposed by combining the above two schedules. Accuracy is the vital indicator in location estimation used in many scenarios, such as warehousing, tracking, monitoring, security surveillance, etc., in a wireless sensor network (WSN). The conventional range-free DV-Hop algorithm uses hop distance to estimate sensor node positions but has limitations in terms of accuracy. To address the issues of low accuracy and high energy consumption of DV-Hop-based localization in static WSNs, this paper proposes an enhanced DV-Hop algorithm for efficient and accurate localization with reduced energy consumption. The proposed method consists of three steps: first, the single-hop distance is corrected using the RSSI value for a specific radius; second, the average hop distance between unknown nodes and anchors is modified based on the difference between actual and estimated distances; and finally, the least-squares approach is used to estimate the location of each unknown node. The proposed algorithm, named Hop-correction and energy-efficient DV-Hop (HCEDV-Hop), is executed and evaluated in MATLAB to compare its performance with benchmark schemes. The results show that HCEDV-Hop improves localization accuracy by an average of 81.36%, 77.99%, 39.72%, and 9.96% compared to basic DV-Hop, WCL, improved DV-maxHop, and improved DV-Hop, respectively. In a wireless sensor network (WSN), geocasting is a location-based routing protocol used for data collection or information delivery. In geocasting, a target region usually contains many sensor nodes with limited battery capacity, and sensor nodes in multiple target regions need to transmit data to the sink. Therefore, how to use location information to construct an energy efficient geocasting path is a very important issue. FERMA is a geocasting scheme for WSNs based on Fermat points. In this paper, an efficient grid-based geocasting scheme for WSNs, which is called GB-FERMA, is proposed. The scheme uses the Fermat point theorem to search for the specific nodes as Fermat points in a grid-based WSN, and it selects the optimal relay nodes (gateways) in the grid structure to realize energy-aware forwarding. In the simulations, when the initial power 0.25 J, the average energy consumption of GB-FERMA is about 53% of FERMA-QL, 37% of FERMA, and 23% of GEAR; however, when with the initial power 0.5 J, the average energy consumption of GB-FERMA is about 77% of FERMA-QL, 65% of FERMA, and 43% of GEAR. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are becoming a significant technology for ubiquitous living and continue to be involved in active research because of their varied applications. Energy awareness will be a critical design problem in WSNs. Clustering is a widespread energy-efficient method and grants several benefits such as scalability, energy efficiency, less delay, and lifetime, but it results in hotspot issues. To solve this, unequal clustering (UC) has been presented. In UC, the size of the cluster differs with the distance to the base station (BS). This paper devises an improved tuna-swarm-algorithm-based unequal clustering for hotspot elimination (ITSA-UCHSE) technique in an energy-aware WSN. The ITSA-UCHSE technique intends to resolve the hotspot problem and uneven energy dissipation in the WSN. In this study, the ITSA is derived from the use of a tent chaotic map with the traditional TSA. In addition, the ITSA-UCHSE technique computes a fitness value based on energy and distance metrics. Moreover, the cluster size determination via the ITSA-UCHSE technique helps to address the hotspot issue. In Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs), data should be transmitted to data centers reliably and efficiently. However, due to the harsh channel conditions, reliable data transmission is a challenge for large-scale UWSNs. Thus, opportunistic routing (OR) protocols with high reliability, strong robustness, low end-to-end delay, and high energy efficiency are widely applied. However, OR in UWSNs is vulnerable to routing attacks. For example, sinkhole attack nodes can attract traffic from surrounding nodes by forging information such as the distance to the sink node. In order to reduce the negative impact of malicious nodes on data transmission, we propose an intrusion detection scheme (IDS) based on the Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) clustering algorithm for OR (DOIDS) in this paper. DOIDS is based on small-sample IDS and is suitable for UWSNs with sparse node deployment. In DOIDS, the local monitoring mechanism is adopted. Every node in the network running DOIDS can select the trusted next hop. Firstly, according to the behavior characteristics of common routing attack nodes and unreliable underwater acoustic channel characteristics, DOIDS selected the energy consumption, forwarding, and link quality information of candidate nodes as the detection feature values. Then, the collected feature information is used to detect potential abnormal nodes through the DBSCAN clustering algorithm. Finally, a decision function is defined according to the time decay function to reduce the false detection rate of DOIDS. It makes a final judgment on whether the potential abnormal node is malicious. The simulation results show that the algorithm can effectively improve the detection accuracy rate (3% to 15% for different scenarios) and reduce the false positive rate, respectively. With the advances in sensing technologies, sensor networks became the core of several different networks, including the Internet of Things (IoT) and drone networks. This led to the use of sensor networks in many critical applications including military, health care, and commercial applications. In addition, sensors might be mobile or stationary. Stationary sensors, once deployed, will not move; however, mobile nodes can move from one place to another. In most current applications, mobile sensors are used to collect data from stationary sensors. This raises many energy consumption challenges, including sensor networks' energy consumption, urgent messages transfer for real-time analysis, and path planning. Moreover, sensors in sensor networks are usually exposed to environmental parameters and left unattended. These issues, up to our knowledge, are not deeply covered in the current research. This paper develops a complete framework to solve these challenges. It introduces novel path planning techniques considering areas' priority, environmental parameters, and urgent messages. Consequently, a novel energy-efficient and reliable clustering algorithm is proposed considering the residual energy of the sensor nodes, the quality of wireless links, and the distance parameter representing the average intra-cluster distance. Moreover, it proposes a real-time, energy-efficient, reliable and environment-aware routing, taking into account the environmental data, link quality, delay, hop count, nodes' residual energy, and load balancing. Furthermore, for the benefit of the sensor networks research community, all proposed algorithms are formed in integer linear programming (ILP) for optimal solutions. A wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a very large number of sensors which are deployed in the specific area of interest. A sensor is an electronic device equipped with a small processor and has a small-capacity memory. The WSN has the functions of low cost, easy deployment, and random reconfiguration. In this paper, an energy-efficient load balancing tree-based data aggregation scheme (LB-TBDAS) for grid-based WSNs is proposed. In this scheme, the sensing area is partitioned into many cells of a grid and then the sensor node with the maximum residual energy is elected to be the cell head in each cell. Then, the tree-like path is established by using the minimum spanning tree algorithm. In the tree construction, it must meet the three constraints, which are the minimum energy consumption spanning tree, the network depth, and the maximum number of child nodes. In the data transmission process, the cell head is responsible for collecting the sensing data in each cell, and the collected data are transmitted along the tree-like path to the base station (BS). Simulation results show that the total energy consumption of LB-TBDAS is significantly less than that of GB-PEDAP and PEDAP. Compared to GB-PEDAP and PEDAP, the proposed LB-TBDAS extends the network lifetime by more than 100%. The widespread use of the Internet of Things makes it relevant to use public IP networks for simultaneous access by both users and wireless sensors. To achieve this, a significant reduction in the subscriber devices' energy consumption is required. This paper analyzes the application features of the collective dynamic routing method both with and without the use of a robust method for estimating the channel data rate for sensors' communication in wireless public networks. Based on the analysis, a novel modification of the collective dynamic routing method has been developed that reduces the sensors' energy consumption while keeping a high data rate and short delivery time for users. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are becoming more popular for many applications due to their convenient services. However, sensor nodes may suffer from significant security flaws, leading researchers to propose authentication schemes to protect WSNs. Although these authentication protocols significantly fulfill the required protection, security enhancement with less energy consumption is essential to preserve the availability of resources and secure better performance. In 2020, Youssef et al. suggested a scheme called Enhanced Probabilistic Cluster Head Selection (LEACH-PRO) to extend the sensors' lifetime in WSNs. This paper introduces a new variant of the LEACH-PRO protocol by adopting the blockchain security technique to protect WSNs. The proposed protocol (SLEACH-PRO) performs a decentralized authentication mechanism by applying a blockchain to multiple base stations to avoid system and performance degradation in the event of a station failure. The security analysis of the SLEACH-PRO is performed using Burrows–Abadi–Needham (BAN) logic and Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA) tool. The wireless sensor network (WSN), a communication system widely used in the Internet of Things, usually collects physical data in a natural environment and monitors abnormal events. Because of the redundancy of natural data, a compressed-sensing-based model offers energy-efficient data processing to overcome the energy shortages and uneven consumption problems of a WSN. However, the convex relaxation method, which is widely used for a compressed-sensing-based WSN, is not sufficient for reducing data processing energy consumption. In addition, when abnormal events occur, the redundancy of the original data is destroyed, which makes the traditional compressed sensing methods ineffective. In this paper, we use a non-convex fraction function as the surrogate function of the ℓ 0 -norm, which achieves lower energy consumption of the sensor nodes. Moreover, considering abnormal event monitoring in a WSN, we propose a new data construction model and apply an alternate direction iterative thresholding algorithm, which avoids extra measurements, unlike previous algorithms. Energy limitation is one of the intrinsic shortcomings of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), although it has been widely applied in disaster response, battlefield surveillance, wildfire monitoring, radioactivity detection, etc. Due to the large amount of energy consumed for data transmission, how to prolong the network lifespan by designing various hierarchical routing protocols has attracted more and more attention. As a result, numerous achievements have emerged successively. However, these presented mechanisms can rarely guarantee the satisfactory quality of service (QoS), while lowering the energy cost level of WSNs. Meanwhile, invulnerability is undoubtedly an excellent quantitative index to assess QoS. Therefore, it is critical to develop a practical routing method to optimize network lifetime by considering both invulnerability and energy efficiency. Game theory is suitable for such a critical problem as it can be used in node or at network level to encourage the decision-making capabilities of WSNs. In this paper, a novel invulnerability-aware clustering routing algorithm (IACRA) using game-theoretic method is proposed to solve the predicament. The core features of the addressed game-theory-based routing protocol include integral invulnerability awareness, optimal cluster head selection in hierarchical routing, distance-aware cluster head discovery, and cluster rotation update mechanism for lifetime optimization. Particularly, the integral network invulnerability based on weighted fusion is constructed for further defining the profit model by combining the invulnerability indicators used to evaluate the local and whole network. Meanwhile, the optimal probability function of every node elected as CH in per cluster is established through the game between invulnerability and node energy consumption. In addition, the cluster update mechanism base on cluster rotation is proposed to avoid the rapid death of nodes with large energy consumption for maximizing network lifetime. The experimental results indicated a significant improvement in energy balance as well as in invulnerability compared with the other three kinds of well-known clustering routing protocols including GEEC (Game-theory-based energy efficient clustering routing protocol), HGTD (Hybrid, game-theory-based distributed clustering protocol), and EEGC (Efficient energy-aware and game-theory-based clustering protocol). Concretely, at the 400 communication rounds, the invulnerability of IACRA was higher than that of GEEC, HGTD, and EEGC by 77.56%, 29.45% and 15.90%, respectively, and the average residual energy of IACRA was 8.61%, 18.35% and 6.36% larger than that of GEEC, HGTD, and EEGC, respectively. Target tracking is an essential issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Compared with single-target tracking, how to guarantee the performance of multi-target tracking is more challenging because the system needs to balance the tracking resource for each target according to different target properties and network status. However, the balance of tracking task allocation is rarely considered in those prior sensor-scheduling algorithms, which may result in the degradation of tracking accuracy for some targets and additional system energy consumption. To address this issue, we propose in this paper an improved Q-learning-based sensor-scheduling algorithm for multi-target tracking (MTT-SS). First, we devise an entropy weight method (EWM)-based strategy to evaluate the priority of targets being tracked according to target properties and network status. Moreover, we develop a Q-learning-based task allocation mechanism to obtain a balanced resource scheduling result in multi-target-tracking scenarios. Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) contain sensor nodes that sense the data and then transfer them to the sink node or base station. Sensor nodes are operationalized through limited-power batteries. Therefore, improvement in energy consumption becomes critical in UWSNs. Data forwarding through the nearest sensor node to the sink or base station reduces the network's reliability and stability because it creates a hotspot and drains the energy early. In recent times, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are becoming more and more popular and are making significant advances in wireless communication thanks to low-cost and low-power sensors. However, since WSN nodes are battery-powered, they lose all of their autonomy after a certain time. This energy restriction impacts the network's lifetime. Clustering can increase the lifetime of a network while also lowering energy use. This paper addresses coverage loss and rapid energy depletion issues for wireless livestock sensor networks by proposing a UAV-based energy-efficient reconfigurable routing (UBER) scheme for smart wireless livestock sensor networking applications. This routing scheme relies on a dynamic residual energy thresholding strategy, robust cluster-to-UAV link formation, and UAV-assisted network coverage and recovery mechanism. The performance of UBER was evaluated using low, normal and high UAV altitude scenarios. Performance metrics employed for this analysis are network stability (NST), load balancing ratio (LBR), and topology fluctuation effect ratio (TFER). Obtained results demonstrated that operating with a UAV altitude of 230 m yields gains of 31.58%, 61.67%, and 75.57% for NST, LBR, and TFER, respectively. A comparative performance evaluation of UBER was carried out with respect to hybrid heterogeneous routing (HYBRID) and mobile sink using directional virtual coordinate routing (MS-DVCR). The performance indicators employed for this comparative analysis are energy consumption (ENC), network coverage (COV), received packets (RPK), SN failures detected (SNFD), route failures detected (RFD), routing overhead (ROH), and end-to-end delay (ETE). With regard to the best-obtained results, UBER recorded performance gains of 46.48%, 47.33%, 15.68%, 19.78%, 46.44%, 29.38%, and 58.56% over HYBRID and MS-DVCR in terms of ENC, COV, RPK, SNFD, RFD, ROH, and ETE, respectively. As a key technology in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), target tracking plays an essential role in many applications. To improve energy efficiency, clustering is widely used in tracking to organize the network to achieve data fusion and reduce communication costs. Many existing studies make dynamic adjustments based on static clusters to track moving targets. However, the additional overhead caused by frequent cluster reconstruction and redundant data transmission is rarely considered. To address this issue, we propose a tracking-anchor-based clustering method (TACM) in this paper, in which tracking anchors are introduced to provide activation indications for sensors according to the target position. We use the rough fuzzy C-means (RFCM) algorithm to locate the anchors and use the membership table to activate sensors to form a cluster. Since there are no sending, receiving, and fusing data tasks for anchors, they are lightly burdened and can significantly reduce the frequency of being rotated. Moreover, the state of cluster members (CMs) is scheduled using the linear 0–1 programming to reduce redundant transmissions. The simulation results demonstrate that, compared with some existing clustering methods, the proposed TACM effectively reduces the energy consumption when tracking a moving target, thus prolonging the network lifetime. High end-to-end delay is a significant challenge in the data collection process in the underwater environment. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are a considerably reliable source of data collection if they have significant trajectory movement. Therefore, in this paper, a new routing algorithm known as Elliptical Shaped Efficient Data Gathering (ESEDG) is introduced for the AUV movement. ESEDG is divided into two phases: first, an elliptical trajectory has been designed for the horizontal movement of the AUV. In the second phase, the AUV gathers data from Gateway Nodes (GNs) which are associated with Member Nodes (MNs). For their association, an end-to-end delay model is also presented in ESEDG. The hierarchy of data collection is as follows: MNs send data to GNs, the AUV receives data from GNs, and forwards it to the sink node. Furthermore, the ESEDG was evaluated on the network simulator NS-3 version 3.35, and the results were compared to existing data collection routing protocols DSG–DGA, AEEDCO, AEEDCO-A, ALP, SEDG, and AEDG. Wireless Underground Sensor Networks (WUSNs) have been showing prospective supervising application domains in the underground region of the earth through sensing, computation, and communication. This paper presents a novel Deep Learning (DL)-based Cooperative communication channel model for Wireless Underground Sensor Networks for accurate and reliable monitoring in hostile underground locations. Furthermore, the proposed communication model aims at the effective utilization of cluster-based Cooperative models through the relay nodes. However, by keeping the cost effectiveness, reliability, and user-friendliness of wireless underground sensor networks through inter-cluster Cooperative transmission between two cluster heads, the determination of the overall energy performance is also measured. The energy co-operative channel allocation routing (ECCAR), Energy Hierarchical Optimistic Routing (EHOR), Non-Cooperative, and Dynamic Energy Routing (DER) methods were used to figure out how well the proposed WUSN works. The Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as transmission time, throughput, packet loss, and efficiency were used in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed WUSNs. In modern trends, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are interesting, and distributed in the environment to evaluate received data. The sensor nodes have a higher capacity to sense and transmit the information. A WSN contains low-cost, low-power, multi-function sensor nodes, with limited computational capabilities, used for observing environmental constraints. In previous research, many energy-efficient routing methods were suggested to improve the time of the network by minimizing energy consumption; sometimes, the sensor nodes run out of power quickly. The majority of recent articles present various methods aimed at reducing energy usage in sensor networks. In this paper, an energy-efficient clustering/routing technique, called the energy and distance based multi-objective red fox optimization algorithm (ED-MORFO), was proposed to reduce energy consumption. In each communication round of transmission, this technique selects the cluster head (CH) with the most residual energy, and finds the optimal routing to the base station. The simulation clearly shows that the proposed ED-MORFO achieves better performance in terms of energy consumption (0.46 J), packet delivery ratio (99.4%), packet loss rate (0.6%), end-to-end delay (11 s), routing overhead (0.11), throughput (0.99 Mbps), and network lifetime (3719 s), when compared with existing MCH-EOR and RDSAOA-EECP methods. Recently, wireless camera sensor networks (WCSNs) have entered an era of rapid development, and WCSNs assisted by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are capable of providing enhanced flexibility, robustness and efficiency when executing missions such as shooting targets. Existing research has mainly focused on back-end image processing to improve the quality of captured images, but it has neglected the question of attaining quality images on the front-end, which is significantly influenced by the location and hovering time of the UAV. Therefore, in this paper, we conceive a novel shooting utility model to quantify shooting quality, which is maximized by simultaneously considering the UAV's trajectory planning, hovering time and shooting point selection. To expound further, we prove the submodularity of the utility function, whereby the original problem can be expressed as a submodular maximization problem with path constraints, and we propose a utility-cost ratio (UCR) algorithm to maximize shooting utility through two-level optimization. Then, by using the relaxation of the cost function, we analyze the gap between the proposed algorithm and the optimal algorithm (OPT) and prove that the UCR algorithm has a bi-criterion approximation ratio of 1 − 1 / e / 2 . Simulation results show that the algorithm outperforms both the random algorithm (RAN) and the maximum shooting utility point selection algorithm (MSU) in terms of shooting utility and time utilization efficiency, improving shooting utility by 51% and 21% compared to the RAN and MSU algorithms, respectively, and achieving at least 88.2% of the OPT algorithm in terms of time utilization efficiency. This paper proposes novel satellite-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which integrate the WSN with the cognitive satellite terrestrial network. Having the ability to provide seamless network access and alleviate the spectrum scarcity, cognitive satellite terrestrial networks are considered as a promising candidate for future wireless networks with emerging requirements of ubiquitous broadband applications and increasing demand for spectral resources. With the emerging environmental and energy cost concerns in communication systems, explicit concerns on energy efficient resource allocation in satellite networks have also recently received considerable attention. In this regard, this paper proposes energy-efficient optimal power allocation schemes in the cognitive satellite terrestrial networks for non-real-time and real-time applications, respectively, which maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the cognitive satellite user while guaranteeing the interference at the primary terrestrial user below an acceptable level. Specifically, average interference power (AIP) constraint is employed to protect the communication quality of the primary terrestrial user while average transmit power (ATP) or peak transmit power (PTP) constraint is adopted to regulate the transmit power of the satellite user. Since the energy-efficient power allocation optimization problem belongs to the nonlinear concave fractional programming problem, we solve it by combining Dinkelbach's method with Lagrange duality method. Simulation results demonstrate that the fading severity of the terrestrial interference link is favorable to the satellite user who can achieve EE gain under the ATP constraint comparing to the PTP constraint. This paper deals with the thermal transmittance measurement focused on buildings and specifically in building energy retrofitting. Today, if many thermal transmittance measurements in a short time are needed, the current devices, based on the measurement of the heat flow through the wall, cannot carry out them, except if a great amount of devices are used at once along with intensive and tedious post-processing and analysis work. In this paper, from well-known physical laws, authors develop a methodology based on three temperatures measurements, which is implemented by a novel thermal transmittance metre. The paper shows its development step by step. As a result the developed device is modular, scalable, and fully wireless; it is capable of taking as many measurements at once as user needs. The developed system is compared working together on a same test to the currently used one based on heat flow. Wireless Sensor Networks are constrained by low channel utilization and limited battery capacity, so they are widely regarded as the mainly performance bottlenecks. In this paper, in order to improve channel utilization and prolong network lifetime, we investigate the cooperation of multi-hop Wireless Rechargeable Sensor Networks (WRSNs) with Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) technology. In WRSNs, since the flow rate of each node is unknown, the power of the nodes is not constant. However, SIC will not work if the signal power levels at receive node cannot be sorted. To solve this issue, we first construct a minimum energy routing and unify the transmit rate to determine the transmit power. We can also obtain the time scheduling scheme after determining the routing and power. Next, we formulate an optimization problem, with the objective of maximizing the mobile charger’s vacation time over the rechargeable cycle. Finally, we provide a near-optimal solution and prove its feasible performance. Simulation results present that SIC can achieve the better upper boundary on throughput (compared to inference avoidance increasing about 180–450%) and no extra transmit and receive energy consumption in the multi-hop WRSNs. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) form an important part of industrial application. There has been growing interest in the potential use of WSNs in applications such as environment monitoring, disaster management, health care monitoring, intelligence surveillance and defence reconnaissance. In these applications, the sensor nodes (SNs) are envisaged to be deployed in sizeable numbers in an outlying area, and it is quite difficult to replace these SNs after complete deployment in many scenarios. Therefore, as SNs are predominantly battery powered devices, the energy consumption of the nodes must be properly managed in order to prolong the network lifetime and functionality to a rational time. Different energy-efficient and energy-balanced routing protocols have been proposed in literature over the years. The energy-efficient routing protocols strive to increase the network lifetime by minimizing the energy consumption in each SN. On the other hand, the energy-balanced routing protocols protract the network lifetime by uniformly balancing the energy consumption among the nodes in the network. There have been various survey papers put forward by researchers to review the performance and classify the different energy-efficient routing protocols for WSNs. However, there seems to be no clear survey emphasizing the importance, concepts, and principles of load-balanced energy routing protocols for WSNs. In this paper, we provide a clear picture of both the energy-efficient and energy-balanced routing protocols for WSNs. More importantly, this paper presents an extensive survey of the different state-of-the-art energy-efficient and energy-balanced routing protocols. A taxonomy is introduced in this paper to classify the surveyed energy-efficient and energy-balanced routing protocols based on their proposed mode of communication towards the base station (BS). In addition, we classified these routing protocols based on the solution types or algorithms, and the input decision variables defined in the routing algorithm. The strengths and weaknesses of the choice of the decision variables used in the design of these energy-efficient and energy-balanced routing protocols are emphasised. Although sensor technologies have been developing quite similarly all over the world, the investigation of their applications has been more affected by the specific industrial and economic characteristics of each country. This paper aims to investigate the development of applications based on sensor devices in the sectors of energy and the environment, in Italy, throughout the last forty years (1976-2015), examining the most relevant papers published by Italian R & D groups working in this field. Italy depends on foreign imports for more than 80% of its primary energy needs, and this has directed the research effort on the development of sensor applications both to improve load shaping and consumers' awareness and to develop specific equipment to maximize renewable energy production. Similarly, for the environment sector, there are increasing efforts to develop solutions to support a more and more capillary control of the environment itself using a cooperative approach. In both the sectors it seems that the solutions proposed can help to relieve the structural problems that Italy suffers and that the scientific and technical results obtained so far also have significant international relevance. In wireless sensor networks, the data collected by sensors are usually forwarded to the sink through multi-hop forwarding. However, multi-hop forwarding can be inefficient due to the energy hole problem and high communications overhead. Moreover, when the monitored area is large and the number of sensors is small, sensors cannot send the data via multi-hop forwarding due to the lack of network connectivity. In order to address those problems of multi-hop forwarding, in this paper, we consider a data collection scheme that uses mobile data collectors (MDCs), which visit sensors and collect data from them. Due to the recent breakthroughs in wireless power transfer technology, MDCs can also be used to recharge the sensors to keep them from draining their energy. In MDC-based data-gathering schemes, a big challenge is how to find the MDCs' traveling paths in a balanced way, such that their energy consumption is minimized and the packet-delay constraint is satisfied. Therefore, in this paper, we aim at finding the MDCs' paths, taking energy efficiency and delay constraints into account. We first define an optimization problem, named the delay-constrained energy minimization (DCEM) problem, to find the paths for MDCs. An integer linear programming problem is formulated to find the optimal solution. We also propose a two-phase path-selection algorithm to efficiently solve the DCEM problem. Simulations are performed to compare the performance of the proposed algorithms with two heuristics algorithms for the vehicle routing problem under various scenarios. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become essential components for a variety of environmental, surveillance, military, traffic control, and healthcare applications. These applications face critical challenges such as communication, security, power consumption, data aggregation, heterogeneities of sensor hardware, and Quality of Service (QoS) issues. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a software architecture that can be integrated with WSN applications to address those challenges. The SOA middleware bridges the gap between the high-level requirements of different applications and the hardware constraints of WSNs. This survey explores state-of-the-art approaches based on SOA and Service-Oriented Middleware (SOM) architecture that provide solutions for WSN challenges. The categories of this paper are based on approaches of SOA with and without middleware for WSNs. Additionally, features of SOA and middleware architectures for WSNs are compared to achieve more robust and efficient network performance. Design issues of SOA middleware for WSNs and its characteristics are also highlighted. Wireless sensor network-based (WSN-based) applications need an efficient and reliable data dissemination service to facilitate maintenance, management and data distribution tasks. As WSNs nowadays are becoming pervasive and data intensive, bulk data dissemination protocols have been extensively studied recently. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art bulk data dissemination protocols. The large number of papers available in the literature propose various techniques to optimize the dissemination protocols. Different from the existing survey works which separately explores the building blocks of dissemination, our work categorizes the literature according to the optimization purposes: Reliability, Scalability and Transmission/Energy efficiency. By summarizing and reviewing the key insights and techniques, we further discuss on the future directions for each category. Our survey helps unveil three key findings for future direction: (1) The recent advances in wireless communications (e.g., study on cross-technology interference, error estimating codes, constructive interference, capture effect) can be potentially exploited to support further optimization on the reliability and energy efficiency of dissemination protocols; (2) Dissemination in multi-channel, multi-task and opportunistic networks requires more efforts to fully exploit the spatial-temporal network resources to enhance the data propagation; (3) Since many designs incur changes on MAC layer protocols, the co-existence of dissemination with other network protocols is another problem left to be addressed.
