Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is one of the horses' dental diseases, mainly affecting the incisor teeth. An increase in the incidence of aged horses and a painful progressive course of the disease create the need for improved early diagnosis. Besides clinical findings, EOTRH recognition is based on the typical radiographic findings, including levels of dental resorption and hypercementosis. This study aimed to introduce digital processing methods to equine dental radiographic images and identify texture features changing with disease progression. The radiographs of maxillary incisor teeth from 80 horses were obtained. Each incisor was annotated by separate masks and clinically classified as 0, 1, 2, or 3 EOTRH degrees. Images were filtered by Mean, Median, Normalize, Bilateral, Binomial, CurvatureFlow, LaplacianSharpening, DiscreteGaussian, and SmoothingRecursiveGaussian filters independently, and 93 features of image texture were extracted using First Order Statistics (FOS), Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Neighbouring Gray Tone Difference Matrix (NGTDM), Gray Level Dependence Matrix (GLDM), Gray Level Run Length Matrix (GLRLM), and Gray Level Size Zone Matrix (GLSZM) approaches. The most informative processing was selected. GLCM and GLRLM return the most favorable features for the quantitative evaluation of radiographic signs of the EOTRH syndrome, which may be supported by filtering by filters improving the edge delimitation. Infrared thermography (IRT) was applied as a potentially useful tool in the detection of pregnancy in equids, especially native or wildlife. IRT measures heat emission from the body surface, which increases with the progression of pregnancy as blood flow and metabolic activity in the uterine and fetal tissues increase. Conventional IRT imaging is promising; however, with specific limitations considered, this study aimed to develop novel digital processing methods for thermal images of pregnant mares to detect pregnancy earlier with higher accuracy. In the current study, 40 mares were divided into non-pregnant and pregnant groups and imaged using IRT. Thermal images were transformed into four color models (RGB, YUV, YIQ, HSB) and 10 color components were separated. From each color component, features of image texture were obtained using Histogram Statistics and Grey-Level Run-Length Matrix algorithms. The most informative color/feature combinations were selected for further investigation, and the accuracy of pregnancy detection was calculated. The image texture features in the RGB and YIQ color models reflecting increased heterogeneity of image texture seem to be applicable as potential indicators of pregnancy. Their application in IRT-based pregnancy detection in mares allows for earlier recognition of pregnant mares with higher accuracy than the conventional IRT imaging technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metallographic image analysis is vital in the field of metal science due to its potential to automate the sensing process for grain and particle size estimation. To ensure the good quality and reliability of metal products, analysis of the integrity of metallic components is required. In contemporary manufacturing processes, microscopic analysis is a crucial step, mainly when complex systems like gearboxes, turbines, or engines are assembled using various components from multiple suppliers. A final product's quality, durability, and lifespan are determined via the quality analysis of properties of a material with proper tolerances. A flaw in a single component can cause the breakdown of the entire finished product. To ensure the good quality of a material, micro-structural analysis is necessary, which includes the routine measurement of inclusions. The particle and grain sizes of particulate samples are the most crucial physical characteristics of metals. Their measurement is routinely conducted across various industries, and they are frequently considered essential parameters in the creation of many products. This paper discusses the role of sensors in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of metallographic image analysis, as well as the challenges and limitations associated with this technology. The paper also highlights the potential applications of sensor-assisted metallographic image analysis in various industries, such as aerospace, automotive, and construction. The paper concludes by identifying future research directions for this emerging field, including the development of more sophisticated algorithms for grain and particle size estimation, the integration of multiple sensors for more accurate measurements, and the exploration of new sensing modalities for metallographic image analysis. Generating realistic road scenes is crucial for advanced driving systems, particularly for training deep learning methods and validation. Numerous efforts aim to create larger and more realistic synthetic datasets using graphics engines or synthetic-to-real domain adaptation algorithms. In the realm of computer-generated images (CGIs), assessing fidelity is challenging and involves both objective and subjective aspects. Our study adopts a comprehensive conceptual framework to quantify the fidelity of RGB images, unlike existing methods that are predominantly application-specific. This is probably due to the data complexity and huge range of possible situations and conditions encountered. In this paper, a set of distinct metrics assessing the level of fidelity of virtual RGB images is proposed. For quantifying image fidelity, we analyze both local and global perspectives of texture and the high-frequency information in images. Our focus is on the statistical characteristics of realistic and synthetic road datasets, using over 28,000 images from at least 10 datasets. Through a thorough examination, we aim to reveal insights into texture patterns and high-frequency components contributing to the objective perception of data realism in road scenes. This study, exploring image fidelity in both virtual and real conditions, takes the perspective of an embedded camera rather than the human eye. The results of this work, including a pioneering set of objective scores applied to real, virtual, and improved virtual data, offer crucial insights and are an asset for the scientific community in quantifying fidelity levels. Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent malignant liver tumor and the third cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. For many years, the golden standard for HCC diagnosis has been the needle biopsy, which is invasive and carries risks. Computerized methods are due to achieve a noninvasive, accurate HCC detection process based on medical images. We developed image analysis and recognition methods to perform automatic and computer-aided diagnosis of HCC. Conventional approaches that combined advanced texture analysis, mainly based on Generalized Co-occurrence Matrices (GCM) with traditional classifiers, as well as deep learning approaches based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Stacked Denoising Autoencoders (SAE), were involved in our research. The best accuracy of 91% was achieved for B-mode ultrasound images through CNN by our research group. In this work, we combined the classical approaches with CNN techniques, within B-mode ultrasound images. The combination was performed at the classifier level. The CNN features obtained at the output of various convolution layers were combined with powerful textural features, then supervised classifiers were employed. The experiments were conducted on two datasets, acquired with different ultrasound machines. This article describes chemical and physical parameters, including their role in the storage, trade, and processing of potatoes, as well as their nutritional properties and health benefits resulting from their consumption. An analysis of the share of losses occurring during the production process is presented. The methods and applications used in recent years to estimate the physical and chemical parameters of potatoes during their storage and processing, which determine the quality of potatoes, are presented. The potential of the technologies used to classify the quality of potatoes, mechanical and ultrasonic, and image processing and analysis using vision systems, as well as their use in applications with artificial intelligence, are discussed. Specular Reflections often exist in the endoscopic image, which not only hurts many computer vision algorithms but also seriously interferes with the observation and judgment of the surgeon. The information behind the recovery specular reflection areas is a necessary pre-processing step in medical image analysis and application. The existing highlight detection method is usually only suitable for medium-brightness images. The existing highlight removal method is only applicable to images without large specular regions, when dealing with high-resolution medical images with complex texture information, not only does it have a poor recovery effect, but the algorithm operation efficiency is also low. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a specular reflection detection and removal method for endoscopic images based on brightness classification. It can effectively detect the specular regions in endoscopic images of different brightness and can improve the operating efficiency of the algorithm while restoring the texture structure information of the high-resolution image. In addition to achieving image brightness classification and enhancing the brightness component of low-brightness images, this method also includes two new steps: In the highlight detection phase, the adaptive threshold function that changes with the brightness of the image is used to detect absolute highlights. During the highlight recovery phase, the priority function of the exemplar-based image inpainting algorithm was modified to ensure reasonable and correct repairs. At the same time, local priority computing and adaptive local search strategies were used to improve algorithm efficiency and reduce error matching. The experimental results show that compared with the other state-of-the-art, our method shows better performance in terms of qualitative and quantitative evaluations, and the algorithm efficiency is greatly improved when processing high-resolution endoscopy images. Deep learning techniques underpinned by extensive data sources encompassing complex pavement features have proven effective in early pavement damage detection. With pavement features exhibiting temperature variation, inexpensive infra-red imaging technology in combination with deep learning techniques can detect pavement damages effectively. Previous experiments based on pavement data captured during summer sunny conditions when subjected to SA-ResNet deep learning architecture technique demonstrated 96.47% prediction accuracy. This paper has extended the same deep learning approach to a different dataset comprised of images captured during winter sunny conditions to compare the prediction accuracy, sensitivity and recall score with summer conditions. The results suggest that irrespective of the prevalent weather season, the proposed deep learning algorithm categorises pavement features around 92% accurately (95.18% in summer and 91.67% in winter conditions), suggesting the beneficial replacement of one image type with other. The data captured in sunny conditions during summer and winter show prediction accuracies of DC = 96.47% > MSX = 95.24% > IR-T = 93.83% and DC = 94.14% > MSX = 90.69% > IR-T = 90.173%, respectively. DC images demonstrated a sensitivity of 96.47% and 94.20% for summer and winter conditions, respectively, to demonstrate that reliable categorisation is possible with deep learning techniques irrespective of the weather season. However, summer conditions showing better overall prediction accuracy than winter conditions suggests that inexpensive IR-T imaging cameras with medium resolution levels can still be an economical solution, unlike expensive alternate options, but their usage has to be limited to summer sunny conditions.
