Abstract: In this work, we have successfully provided a novel strategy for employing commercially available fluorescent reagent as probe for hypochlorite. The strategy is based on a specific reaction promoted by hypochlorite: namely, hypochlorite oxidizes aminos of probe to imines, which has not yet been used in the fluorescent hypochlorite probe design. Interestingly, the probe showed a fluorescent response to hypochlorite with the emission shift from blue to green. Furthermore, the probe displayed high selectivity for hypochlorite over other species. The probe can be used in detecting practical sample and bioimagings. The probe developed herein made it become possible that organic complexes containing amino can be used to design fluorescence probes for hypochlorite. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Two new salicylaldehydes derivatives, 5-fluoro-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 9-formyl-8-hydroxyjulolidine, were reacted with rhodamine hydrazine. The products were characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray single crystal diffraction. The optical properties of the compounds were investigated in a methanol–4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid solution. 5-Fluoro-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde rhodamine hydrazone (compound 1) was selective toward Cu2+ as shown by a colorless to yellow color change. This was characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy and can be used for the visual detection of Cu2+. The selectivity of 9-formyl-8-hydroxyjulolidine rhodamine hydrazone (compound 2) toward Cu2+ was determined by changes in UV–vis and emission spectra. The results show that compound 2 as a fluorescence probe is more sensitive than compound 1 as a UV–vis probe. Furthermore, compound 2 can be used for bioimaging. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A simple aldehyde-functionalized coumarin (7-diethylaminocoumarin-3-aldehyde) was utilized for the selective detection of bisulfite anions in water. The probe has exhibited a selective and sensitive response to the bisulfite anion against other anions, including Cys, through the nucleophilic addition of the bisulfite to probe. The fluorescence of the probe changes upon the addition of bisulfite anions, such that millimolar concentrations of bisulfite are detectable. Moreover, the sensor can also be applied to detect the level of bisulfite in sugar samples. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
