Driver Monitoring Systems (DMSs) play a key role in preventing hazardous events (e.g., road accidents) by providing prompt assistance when anomalies are detected while driving. Different factors, such as traffic and road conditions, might alter the psycho-physiological status of a driver by increasing stress and workload levels. This motivates the development of advanced monitoring architectures taking into account psycho-physiological aspects. In this work, we propose a novel in-vehicle Internet of Things (IoT)-oriented monitoring system to assess the stress status of the driver. In detail, the system leverages heterogeneous components and techniques to collect driver (and, possibly, vehicle) data, aiming at estimating the driver’s arousal level, i.e., their psycho-physiological response to driving tasks. In particular, a wearable sensorized bodice and a thermal camera are employed to extract physiological parameters of interest (namely, the heart rate and skin temperature of the subject), which are processed and analyzed with innovative algorithms. Finally, experimental results are obtained both in simulated and real driving scenarios, demonstrating the adaptability and efficacy of the proposed system.

Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a widely used psychophysiological measurement in laboratory-based studies. In recent times, these measurements have seen a transfer from the laboratory to wearable devices due to the simplicity of EDA measurement as well as modern electronics. However, proper conditions for EDA measurement are recommended once wearable devices are used, and the ambient conditions may influence such measurements. It is not completely known how different types of ambient noise impact EDA measurement and how this translates to wearable EDA measurement. Therefore, this study explored the effects of various noise disturbances on the generation of EDA responses using a system for the simultaneous recording of all measures of EDA, i.e., skin conductance responses (SCRs), skin susceptance responses (SSRs), and skin potential responses (SPRs), at the same skin site. The SCRs, SSRs, and SPRs due to five types of noise stimuli at different sound pressure levels (70, 75, 80, 85, and 90 dB) were measured from 40 participants. The obtained results showed that EDA responses were generated at all levels and that the EDA response magnitudes were significantly (p < 0.001) influenced by the increasing noise levels. Different types of environmental noise may elicit EDA responses and influence wearable recordings outside the laboratory, where such noises are more likely than in standardized laboratory tests. Depending on the application, it is recommended to prevent these types of unwanted variation, presenting a challenge for the quality of wearable EDA measurement in real-world conditions. Future developments to shorten the quality gap between standardized laboratory-based and wearable EDA measurements may include adding microphone sensors and algorithms to detect, classify, and process the noise-related EDA.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) has been universally recognized for its role in protecting workers from injuries and illnesses. Smart PPE integrates Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to enable continuous monitoring of workers and their surrounding environment, preventing undesirable events, facilitating rapid emergency response, and informing rescuers of potential hazards. This work presents a smart PPE system with a sensor node architecture designed to monitor workers and their surroundings. The sensor node is equipped with various sensors and communication capabilities, enabling the monitoring of specific gases (VOC, CO2, CO, O2), particulate matter (PM), temperature, humidity, positional information, audio signals, and body gestures. The system utilizes artificial intelligence algorithms to recognize patterns in worker activity that could lead to risky situations. Gas tests were conducted in a special chamber, positioning capabilities were tested indoors and outdoors, and the remaining sensors were tested in a simulated laboratory environment. This paper presents the sensor node architecture and the results of tests on target risky scenarios. The sensor node performed well in all situations, correctly signaling all cases that could lead to risky situations.

The objective of this study was to make informed decisions regarding the design of wearable electroencephalography (wearable EEG) for the detection of motor imagery movements based on testing the critical features for the development of wearable EEG. Three datasets were utilized to determine the optimal acquisition frequency. The brain zones implicated in motor imagery movement were analyzed, with the aim of improving wearable-EEG comfort and portability. Two detection algorithms with different configurations were implemented. The detection output was classified using a tool with various classifiers. The results were categorized into three groups to discern differences between general hand movements and no movement; specific movements and no movement; and specific movements and other specific movements (between five different finger movements and no movement). Testing was conducted on the sampling frequencies, trials, number of electrodes, algorithms, and their parameters. The preferred algorithm was determined to be the FastICACorr algorithm with 20 components. The optimal sampling frequency is 1 kHz to avoid adding excessive noise and to ensure efficient handling. Twenty trials are deemed sufficient for training, and the number of electrodes will range from one to three, depending on the wearable EEG’s ability to handle the algorithm parameters with good performance.

Insight into, and measurements of, muscle contraction during movement may help improve the assessment of muscle function, quantification of athletic performance, and understanding of muscle behavior, prior to and during rehabilitation following neuromusculoskeletal injury. A self-adhesive, elastic fabric, nanocomposite, skin-strain sensor was developed and validated for human movement monitoring. We hypothesized that skin-strain measurements from these wearables would reveal different degrees of muscle engagement during functional movements. To test this hypothesis, the strain sensing properties of the elastic fabric sensors, especially their linearity, stability, repeatability, and sensitivity, were first verified using load frame tests. Human subject tests conducted in parallel with optical motion capture confirmed that they can reliably measure tensile and compressive skin-strains across the calf and tibialis anterior. Then, a pilot study was conducted to assess the correlation of skin-strain measurements with surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. Subjects did biceps curls with different weights, and the responses of the elastic fabric sensors worn over the biceps brachii and flexor carpi radialis (i.e., forearm) were well-correlated with sEMG muscle engagement measures. These nanocomposite fabric sensors were validated for monitoring muscle engagement during functional activities and did not suffer from the motion artifacts typically observed when using sEMGs in free-living community settings.

Nocturnal scratching substantially impairs the quality of life in individuals with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (AD). Current clinical measurements of scratch rely on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) on itch over the last 24 h. Such measurements lack objectivity and sensitivity. Digital health technologies (DHTs), such as wearable sensors, have been widely used to capture behaviors in clinical and real-world settings. In this work, we develop and validate a machine learning algorithm using wrist-wearing actigraphy that could objectively quantify nocturnal scratching events, therefore facilitating accurate assessment of disease progression, treatment effectiveness, and overall quality of life in AD patients. A total of seven subjects were enrolled in a study to generate data overnight in an inpatient setting. Several machine learning models were developed, and their performance was compared. Results demonstrated that the best-performing model achieved the F1 score of 0.45 on the test set, accompanied by a precision of 0.44 and a recall of 0.46. Upon satisfactory performance with an expanded subject pool, our automatic scratch detection algorithm holds the potential for objectively assessing sleep quality and disease state in AD patients. This advancement promises to inform and refine therapeutic strategies for individuals with AD.

In recent years, hydrogel-based wearable flexible electronic devices have attracted much attention. However, hydrogel-based sensors are affected by structural fatigue, material aging, and water absorption and swelling, making stability and accuracy a major challenge. In this study, we present a DN-SPEZ dual-network hydrogel prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), ethylene glycol (EG), and ZnSO4 and propose a self-calibration compensation strategy. The strategy utilizes a metal salt solution to adjust the carrier concentration of the hydrogel to mitigate the resistance drift phenomenon to improve the stability and accuracy of hydrogel sensors in amphibious scenarios, such as land and water. The ExpGrow model was used to characterize the trend of the ∆R/R0 dynamic response curves of the hydrogels in the stress tests, and the average deviation of the fitted curves ϵ¯ was calculated to quantify the stability differences of different groups. The results showed that the stability of the uncompensated group was much lower than that of the compensated group utilizing LiCl, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, and AlCl3 solutions (ϵ¯ in the uncompensated group in air was 276.158, 1.888, 2.971, 30.586, and 13.561 times higher than that of the compensated group in LiCl, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, and AlCl3, respectively; ϵ¯ in the uncompensated group in seawater was 10.287 times, 1.008 times, 1.161 times, 4.986 times, 1.281 times, respectively, higher than that of the compensated group in LiCl, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2 and AlCl3). In addition, for the ranking of the compensation effect of different compensation solutions, the concentration of the compensation solution and the ionic radius and charge of the cation were found to be important factors in determining the compensation effect. Detection of events in amphibious environments such as swallowing, robotic arm grasping, Morse code, and finger–wrist bending was also performed in this study. This work provides a viable method for stability and accuracy enhancement of dual-network hydrogel sensors with strain and pressure sensing capabilities and offers solutions for sensor applications in both airborne and underwater amphibious environments.

The increasing use of inertial measurement units (IMU) in biomedical sciences brings new possibilities for clinical research. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the accuracy of the IMU-based wearable Syde® device, which allows day-long and remote continuous gait recording in comparison to a reference motion capture system. Twelve healthy subjects (age: 23.17 ± 2.04, height: 174.17 ± 6.46 cm) participated in a controlled environment data collection and performed a series of gait tasks with both systems attached to each ankle. A total of 2820 strides were analyzed. The results show a median absolute stride length error of 1.86 cm between the IMU-based wearable device reconstruction and the motion capture ground truth, with the 75th percentile at 3.24 cm. The median absolute stride horizontal velocity error was 1.56 cm/s, with the 75th percentile at 2.63 cm/s. With a measurement error to the reference system of less than 3 cm, we conclude that there is a valid physical recovery of stride length and horizontal velocity from data collected with the IMU-based wearable Syde® device.

In this paper, the design and research of a sensor-based personal air-quality monitoring device are presented, which is retrofitted into different personal protective face masks. Due to its small size and low power consumption, the device can be integrated into and applied in practical urban usage. We present our research and the development of the sensor node based on a BME680-type environmental sensor cluster with a wireless IoT (Internet of Things)-capable central unit and overall low power consumption. The integration of the sensor node was investigated with traditional medical masks and a professional FFP2-type mask. The filtering efficiency after embedding was validated with a head model and a particle counter. We found that the professional mask withstood the embedding without losing the protective filtering aspect. We compared the inner and outer sensor data and investigated the temperature, pressure, humidity, and AQI (Air Quality Index) relations with possible sensor data-fusion options. The novelty is increased with the dual-sensor layout (inward and outward). It was found that efficient respiration monitoring is achievable with the device. With the analysis of the recorded data, characteristic signals were identified in an urban environment, enabling urban altimetry and urban zone detection. The results promote smart city concepts and help in endeavors related to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) 3 and 11.

Smart algorithms for gait kinematic motion prediction in wearable assistive devices including prostheses, bionics, and exoskeletons can ensure safer and more effective device functionality. Although embedded systems can support the use of smart algorithms, there are important limitations associated with computational load. This poses a tangible barrier for models with increased complexity that demand substantial computational resources for superior performance. Forecasting through Recurrent Topology (FReT) represents a computationally lightweight time-series data forecasting algorithm with the ability to update and adapt to the input data structure that can predict complex dynamics. Here, we deployed FReT on an embedded system and evaluated its accuracy, computational time, and precision to forecast gait kinematics from lower-limb motion sensor data from fifteen subjects. FReT was compared to pretrained hyperparameter-optimized NNET and deep-NNET (D-NNET) model architectures, both with static model weight parameters and iteratively updated model weight parameters to enable adaptability to evolving data structures. We found that FReT was not only more accurate than all the network models, reducing the normalized root-mean-square error by almost half on average, but that it also provided the best balance between accuracy, computational time, and precision when considering the combination of these performance variables. The proposed FReT framework on an embedded system, with its improved performance, represents an important step towards the development of new sensor-aided technologies for assistive ambulatory devices.

Repeated single-point measurements of thoracic bioimpedance at a single (low) frequency are strongly related to fluid changes during hemodialysis. Extension to semi-continuous measurements may provide longitudinal details in the time pattern of the bioimpedance signal, and multi-frequency measurements may add in-depth information on the distribution between intra- and extracellular fluid. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of semi-continuous multi-frequency thoracic bioimpedance measurements by a wearable device in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, thoracic bioimpedance was recorded semi-continuously (i.e., every ten minutes) at nine frequencies (8–160 kHz) in 68 patients during two consecutive hemodialysis sessions, complemented by a single-point measurement at home in-between both sessions. On average, the resistance signals increased during both hemodialysis sessions and decreased during the interdialytic interval. The increase during dialysis was larger at 8 kHz (∆ 32.6 Ω during session 1 and ∆ 10 Ω during session 2), compared to 160 kHz (∆ 29.5 Ω during session 1 and ∆ 5.1 Ω during session 2). Whereas the resistance at 8 kHz showed a linear time pattern, the evolution of the resistance at 160 kHz was significantly different (p < 0.0001). Measuring bioimpedance semi-continuously and with a multi-frequency current is a major step forward in the understanding of fluid dynamics in hemodialysis patients. This study paves the road towards remote fluid monitoring.

An observational, repeated measures design was used in this study to assess the validity of the Ergotex Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) against a 3D motion capture system for measuring trunk, hip, and shoulder angles in ten healthy adult males (38.8 ± 7.3 y, bodyweight 79.2 ± 115.9 kg, body height 179.1 ± 8.1 cm). There were minimal systematic differences between the devices, with the most significant discrepancy being 1.4 degrees for the 80-degree target angle, denoting Ergotex’s precision in joint angle measurements. These results were statistically significant (p < 0.001), with predominantly trivial to small effect sizes, indicating high accuracy for clinical and biomechanical applications. Bland–Altman analysis showed Limits of Agreement (LoA) approximately ±2.5 degrees across all angles and positions, with overall LoA ranging from 3.6 to −2.4 degrees, reflecting Ergotex’s consistent performance. Regression analysis indicated uniform variance across measurements, with minor heteroscedastic errors producing a negligible underestimation trend of around 0.5 degrees in some instances. In conclusion, the Ergotex IMU is a reliable tool for accurate joint angle measurements. It offers a practical and cost-effective alternative to more complex systems, particularly in settings where precise measurement is essential.

Learning underlying patterns from sensory data is crucial in the Human Activity Recognition (HAR) task to avoid poor generalization when coping with unseen data. A key solution to such an issue is representation learning, which becomes essential when input signals contain activities with similar patterns or when patterns generated by different subjects for the same activity vary. To address these issues, we seek a solution to increase generalization by learning the underlying factors of each sensor signal. We develop a novel multi-channel asymmetric auto-encoder to recreate input signals precisely and extract indicative unsupervised futures. Further, we investigate the role of various activation functions in signal reconstruction to ensure the model preserves the patterns of each activity in the output. Our main contribution is that we propose a multi-task learning model to enhance representation learning through shared layers between signal reconstruction and the HAR task to improve the robustness of the model in coping with users not included in the training phase. The proposed model learns shared features between different tasks that are indeed the underlying factors of each input signal. We validate our multi-task learning model using several publicly available HAR datasets, UCI-HAR, MHealth, PAMAP2, and USC-HAD, and an in-house alpine skiing dataset collected in the wild, where our model achieved 99%, 99%, 95%, 88%, and 92% accuracy. Our proposed method shows consistent performance and good generalization on all the datasets compared to the state of the art.

(1) Background: Hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle lead to multiple changes in physiological parameters such as body temperature, cardiovascular function, respiratory rate and perfusion. Electronic wearables analyzing those parameters might present a convenient alternative to urinary ovulation tests for predicting the fertile window. (2) Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study including women aged 18–45 years without current hormonal therapy who used a wrist-worn medical device and urinary ovulation tests for a minimum of three cycles. We analyzed the accuracy of both the retrospective and prospective algorithms using a generalized linear mixed-effects model. The findings were compared to real-world data from bracelet users who also reported urinary ovulation tests. (3) Results: A total of 61 study participants contributing 205 cycles and 6081 real-life cycles from 3268 bracelet users were included in the analysis. The mean error in identifying ovulation with the wrist-worn medical device retrospective algorithm in the clinical study was 0.31 days (95% CI −0.13 to 0.75). The retrospective algorithm identified 75.4% of fertile days, and the prospective algorithm identified 73.8% of fertile days correctly within the pre-specified equivalence limits (±2 days). The quality of the retrospective algorithm in the clinical study could be confirmed by real-world data. (4) Conclusion: Our data indicate that wearable sensors may be used to accurately detect the periovulatory period.

Sensor data has been used in social security and welfare infrastructures such as insurance and medical care to provide personalized products and services; there is a risk that attackers can alter sensor data to obtain unfair benefits. We consider that one of the attack methods to modify sensor data is to attack the wearer’s body to modify biometric information. In this study, we propose a noninvasive attack method to modify the sensor value of a photoplethysmogram. The proposed method can disappear pulse wave peaks by pressurizing the upper arm with air pressure to control blood volume. Seven subjects experiencing a rest environment and five subjects experiencing an after-exercise environment wore five different models of smartwatches, and three pressure patterns were performed. It was confirmed in both situations that the displayed heart rate decreased from the true heart rate.

In this paper, an inductive wireless link for motion recognition is investigated. In order to validate the feasibility of a wearable implementation, the use of three different materials is analyzed: a thin copper wire, a conductive yarn, and a conductive non-woven fabric. Results from the application of the developed devices on an arm are reported and discussed. It is demonstrated that the proposed textile inductive resonant wireless links are well suited for developing a compact wearable system for joint flexion recognition.

Recognizing the affective state of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in real-world settings poses challenges due to the varying head poses, illumination levels, occlusion and a lack of datasets annotated with emotions in in-the-wild scenarios. Understanding the emotional state of children with ASD is crucial for providing personalized interventions and support. Existing methods often rely on controlled lab environments, limiting their applicability to real-world scenarios. Hence, a framework that enables the recognition of affective states in children with ASD in uncontrolled settings is needed. This paper presents a framework for recognizing the affective state of children with ASD in an in-the-wild setting using heart rate (HR) information. More specifically, an algorithm is developed that can classify a participant’s emotion as positive, negative, or neutral by analyzing the heart rate signal acquired from a smartwatch. The heart rate data are obtained in real time using a smartwatch application while the child learns to code a robot and interacts with an avatar. The avatar assists the child in developing communication skills and programming the robot. In this paper, we also present a semi-automated annotation technique based on facial expression recognition for the heart rate data. The HR signal is analyzed to extract features that capture the emotional state of the child. Additionally, in this paper, the performance of a raw HR-signal-based emotion classification algorithm is compared with a classification approach based on features extracted from HR signals using discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves comparable performance to state-of-the-art HR-based emotion recognition techniques, despite being conducted in an uncontrolled setting rather than a controlled lab environment. The framework presented in this paper contributes to the real-world affect analysis of children with ASD using HR information. By enabling emotion recognition in uncontrolled settings, this approach has the potential to improve the monitoring and understanding of the emotional well-being of children with ASD in their daily lives.

(1) Background: Basic vital signs change during normal pregnancy as they reflect the adaptation of maternal physiology. Electronic wearables like fitness bracelets have the potential to provide vital signs continuously in the home environment of pregnant women. (2) Methods: We performed a prospective observational study from November 2019 to November 2020 including healthy pregnant women, who recorded their wrist skin temperature, heart rate, heart rate variability, and breathing rate using an electronic wearable. In addition, eight emotions were assessed weekly using five-point Likert scales. Descriptive statistics and a multivariate model were applied to correlate the physiological parameters with maternal emotions. (3) Results: We analyzed data from 23 women using the electronic wearable during pregnancy. We calculated standard curves for each physiological parameter, which partially differed from the literature. We showed a significant association of several emotions like feeling stressed, tired, or happy with the course of physiological parameters. (4) Conclusions: Our data indicate that electronic wearables are helpful for closely observing vital signs in pregnancy and to establish modern curves for the physiological course of these parameters. In addition to physiological adaptation mechanisms and pregnancy disorders, emotions have the potential to influence the course of physiological parameters in pregnancy.

Through wearable sensors and deep learning techniques, biomechanical analysis can reach beyond the lab for clinical and sporting applications. Transformers, a class of recent deep learning models, have become widely used in state-of-the-art artificial intelligence research due to their superior performance in various natural language processing and computer vision tasks. The performance of transformer models has not yet been investigated in biomechanics applications. In this study, we introduce a Biomechanical Multi-activity Transformer-based model, BioMAT, for the estimation of joint kinematics from streaming signals of multiple inertia measurement units (IMUs) using a publicly available dataset. This dataset includes IMU signals and the corresponding sagittal plane kinematics of the hip, knee, and ankle joints during multiple activities of daily living. We evaluated the model’s performance and generalizability and compared it against a convolutional neural network long short-term model, a bidirectional long short-term model, and multi-linear regression across different ambulation tasks including level ground walking (LW), ramp ascent (RA), ramp descent (RD), stair ascent (SA), and stair descent (SD). To investigate the effect of different activity datasets on prediction accuracy, we compared the performance of a universal model trained on all activities against task-specific models trained on individual tasks. When the models were tested on three unseen subjects’ data, BioMAT outperformed the benchmark models with an average root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.5 ± 0.5°, and normalized RMSE of 6.8 ± 0.3° across all three joints and all activities. A unified BioMAT model demonstrated superior performance compared to individual task-specific models across four of five activities. The RMSE values from the universal model for LW, RA, RD, SA, and SD activities were 5.0 ± 1.5°, 6.2 ± 1.1°, 5.8 ± 1.1°, 5.3 ± 1.6°, and 5.2 ± 0.7° while these values for task-specific models were, 5.3 ± 2.1°, 6.7 ± 2.0°, 6.9 ± 2.2°, 4.9 ± 1.4°, and 5.6 ± 1.3°, respectively. Overall, BioMAT accurately estimated joint kinematics relative to previous machine learning algorithms across different activities directly from the sequence of IMUs signals instead of time-normalized gait cycle data.

Over the last couple of decades, numerous piezoelectric footwear energy harvesters (PFEHs) have been reported in the literature. This paper reviews the principles, methods, and applications of PFEH technologies. First, the popular piezoelectric materials used and their properties for PEEHs are summarized. Then, the force interaction with the ground and dynamic energy distribution on the footprint as well as accelerations are analyzed and summarized to provide the baseline, constraints, potential, and limitations for PFEH design. Furthermore, the energy flow from human walking to the usable energy by the PFEHs and the methods to improve the energy conversion efficiency are presented. The energy flow is divided into four processing steps: (i) how to capture mechanical energy into a deformed footwear, (ii) how to transfer the elastic energy from a deformed shoes into piezoelectric material, (iii) how to convert elastic deformation energy of piezoelectric materials to electrical energy in the piezoelectric structure, and (iv) how to deliver the generated electric energy in piezoelectric structure to external resistive loads or electrical circuits. Moreover, the major PFEH structures and working mechanisms on how the PFEHs capture mechanical energy and convert to electrical energy from human walking are summarized. Those piezoelectric structures for capturing mechanical energy from human walking are also reviewed and classified into four categories: flat plate, curved, cantilever, and flextensional structures. The fundamentals of piezoelectric energy harvesters, the configurations and mechanisms of the PFEHs, as well as the generated power, etc., are discussed and compared. The advantages and disadvantages of typical PFEHs are addressed. The power outputs of PFEHs vary in ranging from nanowatts to tens of milliwatts. Finally, applications and future perspectives are summarized and discussed.

(1) Background: Consumer smartwatches may be a helpful tool to screen for atrial fibrillation (AF). However, validation studies on older stroke patients remain scarce. The aim of this pilot study from RCT NCT05565781 was to validate the resting heart rate (HR) measurement and the irregular rhythm notification (IRN) feature in stroke patients in sinus rhythm (SR) and AF. (2) Methods: Resting clinical HR measurements (every 5 min) were assessed using continuous bedside ECG monitoring (CEM) and the Fitbit Charge 5 (FC5). IRNs were gathered after at least 4 h of CEM. Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), Bland-Altman analysis, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) were used for agreement and accuracy assessment. (3) Results: In all, 526 individual pairs of measurements were obtained from 70 stroke patients—age 79.4 years (SD ± 10.2), 63% females, BMI 26.3 (IQ 22.2–30.5), and NIHSS score 8 (IQR 1.5–20). The agreement between the FC5 and CEM was good (CCC 0.791) when evaluating paired HR measurements in SR. Meanwhile, the FC5 provided weak agreement (CCC 0.211) and low accuracy (MAPE 16.48%) when compared to CEM recordings in AF. Regarding the accuracy of the IRN feature, analysis found a low sensitivity (34%) and high specificity (100%) for detecting AF. (4) Conclusion: The FC5 was accurate at assessing the HR during SR, but the accuracy during AF was poor. In contrast, the IRN feature was acceptable for guiding decisions regarding AF screening in stroke patients.

Numerous applications exist for monitoring knee contact force (KCF) throughout activities of daily living. However, the ability to estimate these forces is restricted to a laboratory setting. The purposes of this study are to develop KCF metric estimation models and explore the feasibility of monitoring KCF metrics via surrogate measures derived from force-sensing insole data. Nine healthy subjects (3F, age 27 ± 5 years, mass 74.8 ± 11.8 kg, height 1.7 ± 0.08 m) walked at multiple speeds (0.8–1.6 m/s) on an instrumented treadmill. Thirteen insole force features were calculated as potential predictors of peak KCF and KCF impulse per step, estimated with musculoskeletal modeling. The error was calculated with median symmetric accuracy. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients defined the relationship between variables. Models develop per-limb demonstrated lower prediction error than those developed per-subject (KCF impulse: 2.2% vs 3.4%; peak KCF: 3.50% vs. 6.5%, respectively). Many insole features are moderately to strongly associated with peak KCF, but not KCF impulse across the group. We present methods to directly estimate and monitor changes in KCF using instrumented insoles. Our results carry promising implications for internal tissue loads monitoring outside of a laboratory with wearable sensors.

The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is currently highly demanded in multiple scenarios and in particular plays an important role in solving medical-related challenges. RF and microwave technologies, coupled with wireless energy transfer, are interesting candidates because of their inherent contactless spectrometric capabilities and for the wireless transmission of sensing data. This article reviews some recent achievements in the field of wearable sensors, highlighting the benefits that these solutions introduce in operative contexts, such as indoor localization and microwave sensing. Wireless power transfer is an essential requirement to be fulfilled to allow these sensors to be not only wearable but also compact and lightweight while avoiding bulky batteries. Flexible materials and 3D printing polymers, as well as daily garments, are widely exploited within the presented solutions, allowing comfort and wearability without renouncing the robustness and reliability of the built-in wearable sensor.

Engagement is enhanced by the ability to access the state of flow during a task, which is described as a full immersion experience. We report two studies on the efficacy of using physiological data collected from a wearable sensor for the automated prediction of flow. Study 1 took a two-level block design where activities were nested within its participants. A total of five participants were asked to complete 12 tasks that aligned with their interests while wearing the Empatica E4 sensor. This yielded 60 total tasks across the five participants. In a second study representing daily use of the device, a participant wore the device over the course of 10 unstructured activities over 2 weeks. The efficacy of the features derived from the first study were tested on these data. For the first study, a two-level fixed effects stepwise logistic regression procedure indicated that five features were significant predictors of flow. In total, two were related to skin temperature (median change with respect to the baseline and skewness of the temperature distribution) and three were related to acceleration (the acceleration skewness in the x and y directions and the kurtosis of acceleration in the y direction). Logistic regression and naïve Bayes models provided a strong classification performance (AUC > 0.7, between-participant cross-validation). For the second study, these same features yielded a satisfactory prediction of flow for the new participant wearing the device in an unstructured daily use setting (AUC > 0.7, leave-one-out cross-validation). The features related to acceleration and skin temperature appear to translate well for the tracking of flow in a daily use environment.

This work introduces the design, architecture, implementation, and testing of a low-cost and machine-learning-enabled device to be worn on the wrist. The suggested wearable device has been developed for use during emergency incidents of large passenger ship evacuations, and enables the real-time monitoring of the passengers’ physiological state, and stress detection. Based on a properly preprocessed PPG signal, the device provides essential biometric data (pulse rate and oxygen saturation level) and an efficient unimodal machine learning pipeline. The stress detecting machine learning pipeline is based on ultra-short-term pulse rate variability, and has been successfully integrated into the microcontroller of the developed embedded device. As a result, the presented smart wristband is able to provide real-time stress detection. The stress detection system has been trained with the use of the publicly available WESAD dataset, and its performance has been tested through a two-stage process. Initially, evaluation of the lightweight machine learning pipeline on a previously unseen subset of the WESAD dataset was performed, reaching an accuracy score equal to 91%. Subsequently, external validation was conducted, through a dedicated laboratory study of 15 volunteers subjected to well-acknowledged cognitive stressors while wearing the smart wristband, which yielded an accuracy score equal to 76%.

Objective: The employment of wearable systems for continuous monitoring of vital signs is increasing. However, due to substantial susceptibility of conventional bio-signals recorded by wearable systems to motion artifacts, estimation of the respiratory rate (RR) during physical activities is a challenging task. Alternatively, functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) can be used, which has been proven less vulnerable to the subject’s movements. This paper proposes a fusion-based method for estimating RR during bicycling from fNIRS signals recorded by a wearable system. Methods: Firstly, five respiratory modulations are extracted, based on amplitude, frequency, and intensity of the oxygenated hemoglobin concentration (O2Hb) signal. Secondly, the dominant frequency of each modulation is computed using the fast Fourier transform. Finally, dominant frequencies of all modulations are fused, based on averaging, to estimate RR. The performance of the proposed method was validated on 22 young healthy subjects, whose respiratory and fNIRS signals were simultaneously recorded during a bicycling task, and compared against a zero delay Fourier domain band-pass filter. Results: The comparison between results obtained by the proposed method and band-pass filtering indicated the superiority of the former, with a lower mean absolute error (3.66 vs. 11.06 breaths per minute, p<0.05). The proposed fusion strategy also outperformed RR estimations based on the analysis of individual modulation. Significance: This study orients towards the practical limitations of traditional bio-signals for RR estimation during physical activities.

Ambulatory EEGs began emerging in the healthcare industry over the years, setting a new norm for long-term monitoring services. The present devices in the market are neither meant for remote monitoring due to their technical complexity nor for meeting clinical setting needs in epilepsy patient monitoring. In this paper, we propose an ambulatory EEG device, OptiEEG, that has low setup complexity, for the remote EEG monitoring of epilepsy patients. OptiEEG’s signal quality was compared with a gold standard clinical device, Natus. The experiment between OptiEEG and Natus included three different tests: eye open/close (EOC); hyperventilation (HV); and photic stimulation (PS). Statistical and wavelet analysis of retrieved data were presented when evaluating the performance of OptiEEG. The SNR and PSNR of OptiEEG were slightly lower than Natus, but within an acceptable bound. The standard deviations of MSE for both devices were almost in a similar range for the three tests. The frequency band energy analysis is consistent between the two devices. A rhythmic slowdown of theta and delta was observed in HV, whereas photic driving was observed during PS in both devices. The results validated the performance of OptiEEG as an acceptable EEG device for remote monitoring away from clinical environments.

Obesity has a critical impact on musculoskeletal systems, and excessive weight directly affects the ability of subjects to realize movements. It is important to monitor the activities of obese subjects, their functional limitations, and the overall risks related to specific motor tasks. From this perspective, this systematic review identified and summarized the main technologies specifically used to acquire and quantify movements in scientific studies involving obese subjects. The search for articles was carried out on electronic databases, i.e., PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. We included observational studies performed on adult obese subjects whenever reporting quantitative information concerning their movement. The articles must have been written in English, published after 2010, and concerned subjects who were primarily diagnosed with obesity, thus excluding confounding diseases. Marker-based optoelectronic stereophotogrammetric systems resulted to be the most adopted solution for movement analysis focused on obesity; indeed, wearable technologies based on magneto-inertial measurement units (MIMUs) were recently adopted for analyzing obese subjects. Further, these systems are usually integrated with force platforms, so as to have information about the ground reaction forces. However, few studies specifically reported the reliability and limitations of these approaches due to soft tissue artifacts and crosstalk, which turned out to be the most relevant problems to deal with in this context. In this perspective, in spite of their inherent limitations, medical imaging techniques—such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and biplane radiography—should be used to improve the accuracy of biomechanical evaluations in obese people, and to systematically validate less-invasive approaches.

Wearable and portable devices capable of acquiring cardiac signals are at the frontier of the sport industry. They are becoming increasingly popular for monitoring physiological parameters while practicing sport, given the advances in miniaturized technologies, powerful data, and signal processing applications. Data and signals acquired by these devices are increasingly used to monitor athletes’ performances and thus to define risk indices for sport-related cardiac diseases, such as sudden cardiac death. This scoping review investigated commercial wearable and portable devices employed for cardiac signal monitoring during sport activity. A systematic search of the literature was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. After study selection, a total of 35 studies were included in the review. The studies were categorized based on the application of wearable or portable devices in (1) validation studies, (2) clinical studies, and (3) development studies. The analysis revealed that standardized protocols for validating these technologies are necessary. Indeed, results obtained from the validation studies turned out to be heterogeneous and scarcely comparable, since the metrological characteristics reported were different. Moreover, the validation of several devices was carried out during different sport activities. Finally, results from clinical studies highlighted that wearable devices are crucial to improve athletes’ performance and to prevent adverse cardiovascular events.

Background: For older adults with severe aortic stenosis (AS) undergoing aortic valve replacement (AVR), recovery of physical function is important, yet few studies objectively measure it in real-world environments. This exploratory study explored the acceptability and feasibility of using wearable trackers to measure incidental physical activity (PA) in AS patients before and after AVR. Methods: Fifteen adults with severe AS wore an activity tracker at baseline, and ten at one month follow-up. Functional capacity (six-minute walk test, 6MWT) and HRQoL (SF 12) were also assessed. Results: At baseline, AS participants (n = 15, 53.3% female, mean age 82.3 ± 7.0 years) wore the tracker for four consecutive days more than 85% of the total prescribed time, this improved at follow-up. Before AVR, participants demonstrated a wide range of incidental PA (step count median 3437 per day), and functional capacity (6MWT median 272 m). Post-AVR, participants with the lowest incidental PA, functional capacity, and HRQoL at baseline had the greatest improvements within each measure; however, improvements in one measure did not translate to improvements in another. Conclusion: The majority of older AS participants wore the activity trackers for the required time period before and after AVR, and the data attained were useful for understanding AS patients’ physical function.

In this paper, wristband electrodes for hand-to-hand bioimpedance measurements are investigated. The proposed electrodes consist of a stretchable conductive knitted fabric. Different implementations have been developed and compared with Ag/AgCl commercial electrodes. Hand-to-hand measurements at 50 kHz on forty healthy subjects have been carried out and the Passing–Bablok regression method has been exploited to compare the proposed textile electrodes with commercial ones. It is demonstrated that the proposed designs guarantee reliable measurements and easy and comfortable use, thus representing an excellent solution for the development of a wearable bioimpedance measurement system.

Electrodermal Activity (EDA) has become of great interest in the last several decades, due to the advent of new devices that allow for recording a lot of psychophysiological data for remotely monitoring patients’ health. In this work, a novel method of analyzing EDA signals is proposed with the ultimate goal of helping caregivers assess the emotional states of autistic people, such as stress and frustration, which could cause aggression onset. Since many autistic people are non-verbal or suffer from alexithymia, the development of a method able to detect and measure these arousal states could be useful to aid with predicting imminent aggression. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to classify their emotional states to prevent these crises with proper actions. Several studies were conducted to classify EDA signals, usually employing learning methods, where data augmentation was often performed to countervail the lack of extensive datasets. Differently, in this work, we use a model to generate synthetic data that are employed to train a deep neural network for EDA signal classification. This method is automatic and does not require a separate step for features extraction, as in EDA classification solutions based on machine learning. The network is first trained with synthetic data and then tested on another set of synthetic data, as well as on experimental sequences. In the first case, an accuracy of 96% is reached, which becomes 84% in the second case, thus demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed approach and its high performance.

The survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is low, and patients with long-term risks of SCA are not adequately alerted. Understanding SCA’s characteristics will be key to developing preventive strategies. Many lives could be saved if SCA’s early onset could be detected or predicted. Monitoring heart signals continuously is essential for diagnosing sporadic cardiac dysfunction. An electrocardiogram (ECG) can be used to continuously monitor heart function without having to go to the hospital. A zeolite-based dry electrode can provide safe on-skin ECG acquisition while the subject is out-of-hospital and facilitate long-term monitoring. To the ECG signal, a low-power 1 μW read-out circuit was designed and implemented in our prior work. However, having long-term ECG monitoring outside the hospital, i.e., high battery life, and low power consumption while transmission and reception of ECG signal are crucial. This paper proposes a prototype with a 10-bit resolution ADC and nRF24L01 transceivers placed 5 m apart. The system uses the 2.4 GHz worldwide ISM frequency band with GFSK modulation to wirelessly transmit digitized ECG bits at 250 kbps data rate to a physician’s computer (or similar) for continuous monitoring of ECG signals; the power consumption is only 11.2 mW and 4.62 mW during transmission and reception, respectively, with a low bit error rate of ≤0.1%. Additionally, a subject-wise cross-validated, three-fold, optimized convolutional neural network (CNN) model using the Physionet-SCA dataset was implemented on NVIDIA Jetson to identify the irregular heartbeats yielding an accuracy of 89% with a run time of 5.31 s. Normal beat classification has an F1 score of 0.94 and a ROC score of 0.886. Thus, this paper integrates the ECG acquisition and processing unit with low-power wireless transmission and CNN model to detect irregular heartbeats.

We developed a wearable swallowing assessment device using a hetero-core fiber-optic pressure sensor for the detection of laryngeal movement during swallowing. The proposed pressure sensor (comfortably attached to the skin of the neck) demonstrated a high sensitivity of 0.592 dB/kPa and a linearity of R2 = 0.995 within a 14 kPa pressure band, which is a suitable pressure for the detection of laryngeal movement. In addition, since the fabricated hetero-core fiber-optic pressure sensor maintains appreciable sensitivity over the surface of the sensor, the proposed wearable swallowing assessment device can accurately track the subtle pressure changes induced by laryngeal movements during the swallowing process. Sixteen male subjects and one female subject were evaluated in a variety of age groups ranging from 30 to 60 years old. For all subjects, characteristic swallowing waveforms (with two valleys based on laryngeal movements consisting of upward, forward, backward, and downward displacements) were acquired using the proposed wearable swallowing assessment device. Since the denoted time of the first valley in the acquired waveform determines the “aging effect”, significant differences in swallowing functions among the different age groups were ultimately determined based on the time of the first valley. Additionally, by analyzing each age group using the proposed device, due to p-values being consistently less than 0.05, swallowing times were found to exhibit statistically significant differences within the same groups.

We often interact with our environment through manual handling of objects and exploration of their properties. Object properties (OP), such as texture, stiffness, size, shape, temperature, weight, and orientation provide necessary information to successfully perform interactions. The human haptic perception system plays a key role in this. As virtual reality (VR) has been a growing field of interest with many applications, adding haptic feedback to virtual experiences is another step towards more realistic virtual interactions. However, integrating haptics in a realistic manner, requires complex technological solutions and actual user-testing in virtual environments (VEs) for verification. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent wearable haptic devices (HDs) categorized by the OP exploration for which they have been verified in a VE. We found 13 studies which specifically addressed user-testing of wearable HDs in healthy subjects. We map and discuss the different technological solutions for different OP exploration which are useful for the design of future haptic object interactions in VR, and provide future recommendations.

The use of wearable devices has increased substantially in recent years. This, together with the rise of telemedicine, has led to the use of these types of devices in the healthcare field. In this work, we carried out a detailed study on the use of these devices (regarding the general trends); we analyzed the research works and devices marketed in the last 10 years. This analysis extracted relevant information on the general trend of use, as well as more specific aspects, such as the use of sensors, communication technologies, and diseases. A comparison was made between the commercial and research aspects linked to wearables in the healthcare field, and upcoming trends were analyzed.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a medical imaging technique based on the injection of a current or voltage pattern through electrodes on the skin of the patient, and on the reconstruction of the internal conductivity distribution from the voltages collected by the electrodes. Compared to other imaging techniques, EIT shows significant advantages: it does not use ionizing radiation, is non-invasive and is characterized by high temporal resolution. Moreover, its low cost and high portability make it suitable for real-time, bedside monitoring. However, EIT is also characterized by some technical limitations that cause poor spatial resolution. The possibility to design wearable devices based on EIT has recently given a boost to this technology. In this paper we reviewed EIT physical principles, hardware design and major clinical applications, from the classical to a wearable setup. A wireless and wearable EIT system seems a promising frontier of this technology, as it can both facilitate making clinical measurements and open novel scenarios to EIT systems, such as home monitoring.

Human gait activity recognition is an emerging field of motion analysis that can be applied in various application domains. One of the most attractive applications includes monitoring of gait disorder patients, tracking their disease progression and the modification/evaluation of drugs. This paper proposes a robust, wearable gait motion data acquisition system that allows either the classification of recorded gait data into desirable activities or the identification of common risk factors, thus enhancing the subject’s quality of life. Gait motion information was acquired using accelerometers and gyroscopes mounted on the lower limbs, where the sensors were exposed to inertial forces during gait. Additionally, leg muscle activity was measured using strain gauge sensors. As a matter of fact, we wanted to identify different gait activities within each gait recording by utilizing Machine Learning algorithms. In line with this, various Machine Learning methods were tested and compared to establish the best-performing algorithm for the classification of the recorded gait information. The combination of attention-based convolutional and recurrent neural networks algorithms outperformed the other tested algorithms and was individually tested further on the datasets of five subjects and delivered the following averaged results of classification: 98.9% accuracy, 96.8% precision, 97.8% sensitivity, 99.1% specificity and 97.3% F1-score. Moreover, the algorithm’s robustness was also verified with the successful detection of freezing gait episodes in a Parkinson’s disease patient. The results of this study indicate a feasible gait event classification method capable of complete algorithm personalization.

Aligning treatment with patients’ self-determined goals and health priorities is challenging in dementia care. Wearable-based remote health monitoring may facilitate determining the active participation of individuals with dementia towards achieving the determined goals. The present study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of using wearables to assess healthcare goals set by older adults with cognitive impairment. We present four specific cases that assess (1) the feasibility of using wearables to monitor healthcare goals, (2) differences in function after goal-setting visits, and (3) goal achievement. Older veterans (n = 17) with cognitive impairment completed self-report assessments of mobility, then had an audio-recorded encounter with a geriatrician and wore a pendant sensor for 48 h. Follow-up was conducted at 4–6 months. Data obtained by wearables augments self-reported data and assessed function over time. Four patient cases illustrate the utility of combining sensors, self-report, notes from electronic health records, and visit transcripts at baseline and follow-up to assess goal achievement. Using data from multiple sources, we showed that the use of wearable devices could support clinical communication, mainly when patients, clinicians, and caregivers work to align care with the patient’s priorities.

Measuring motor performance in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) is quite challenging. The objective of this study was to compare the motor performances of individuals with ID and those with typical development (TD) during soccer dribbling through video-based behavior-coded movement assessment along with a wearable sensor. A cross-sectional research design was adopted. Adolescents with TD (N = 25) and ID (N = 29) participated in the straight-line and zigzag soccer dribbling tests. The dribbling performance was videotaped, and the footage was then analyzed with customized behavior-coding software. The coded parameters were the time for movement completion, the number of kicks, blocks, steps, the number of times the ball went out of bounds, the number of missed cones, and the trunk tilt angle. Participants with ID exhibited significantly poorer performance and demonstrated greater variances in many time and frequency domain parameters. It also revealed that participants with ID kicked with both feet while dribbling, whereas those with TD mainly used the dominant foot. The present findings demonstrated how the ID population differed from their peers in lower-extremity strategic control. The customized video-based behavior-coded approach provides an efficient and effective way to gather behavioral data and calculate performance parameter statistics in populations with intellectual disabilities.

Smart glasses (SG) could be a breakthrough in emergency situations, so the aim of this work was to assess the potential benefits of teleassistance with smart glasses (SG) from a midwife to a lifeguard in a simulated, unplanned, out-of-hospital birth (OHB). Thirty-eight lifeguards were randomized into SG and control (CG) groups. All participants were required to act in a simulated imminent childbirth with a maternal–fetal simulator (PROMPT Flex, Laerdal, Norway). The CG acted autonomously, while the SG group was video-assisted by a midwife through SG (Vuzix Blade, New York, NY, USA). The video assistance was based on the OHB protocol, speaking and receiving images on the SG. The performance time, compliance with the protocol steps, and perceived performance with the SG were evaluated. The midwife’s video assistance with SG allowed 35% of the SG participants to perform the complete OHB protocol. No CG participant was able to perform it (p = 0.005). All OHB protocol variables were significantly better in the SG group than in the CG (p < 0.05). Telemedicine through video assistance with SG is feasible so that a lifeguard with no knowledge of childbirth care can act according to the recommendations in a simulated, unplanned, uncomplicated OHB. Communication with the midwife by speaking and sending images to the SG is perceived as an important benefit to the performance.

Although there is a wide range of validated devices to measure vertical jump height, the degree of interchangeability among them is currently unknown. Aims: The purpose of this study was to examine the concurrent validity and reliability of multiple devices to measure jump height in men’s handball players. Methods: Sixteen players (age = 24.0 ± 3.7 years old) performed three types of jumps (n= 144—squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ) and Abalakov jump (ABK)) on a contact platform (CHRONOJUMP®) while simultaneously being measured with two inertial devices (WIMU® and VERT®) and recorded with a high-speed camera. Vertical jump height was analyzed according to each type of jump. Results: The t-test showed statistically significant differences (p = 0.001) between the contact platform (reference standard) and the rest of the tools that tended to overestimate jump height in all jumps. SJ and CMJ proved to be the jump tests with the most stable reliability values in all devices (ICC: 0.92–0.98), except in the comparison with VERT®. Conclusions: Although all the analyzed devices proved to be valid and reliable in previous studies, they are not interchangeable. Therefore, it is suggested to always use the same type of device to evaluate vertical height jump.

Introduction: Gait features differ between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and healthy subjects (HS). Kinematic alterations of gait include reduced gait speed, swing time, and stride length between PD patients and HS. Stride time and swing time variability are increased in PD patients with respect to HS. Additionally, dynamic parameters of asymmetry of gait are significantly different among the two groups. The aim of the present study is to evaluate which kind of gait analysis (dynamic or kinematic) is more informative to discriminate PD and HS gait features. Methods: In the present study, we analyzed gait dynamic and kinematic features of 108 PD patients and 88 HS from four cohorts of two datasets. Results: Kinematic features showed statistically significant differences among PD patients and HS for gait speed and time Up and Go test and for selected kinematic dispersion indices (standard deviation and interquartile range of swing, stance, and double support time). Dynamic features did not show any statistically significant difference between PD patients and HS. Discussion: Despite kinematics features like acceleration being directly proportional to dynamic features like ground reaction force, the results of this study showed the so-called force/rhythm dichotomy since kinematic features were more informative than dynamic ones.

Background: This study aimed to investigate whether home exercise programs informed by wearable activity monitors improved walking ability of patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). Methods: A systematic literature search was performed to identify randomised controlled trials (RCT) testing home exercise that were or were not informed by wearable activity monitors. The primary outcome was the change in walking distance measured by a six-minute walking test or treadmill test over the course of the trial. Network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed using the gemtc R statistical package. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane tool for assessing risk of bias in RCTs (RoB 2.0). Results: A total of 14 RCTs involving 1544 participants were included. Nine trials used wearable activity monitors to inform the home exercise program tested, while five trials did not use wearable activity monitors to inform the home exercise program tested. Overall quality assessment showed 12 trials to be at low risk of bias and two trials at high risk of bias. Home exercise programs informed by wearable activity monitors significantly improved walking distance compared to non-exercise controls (Mean difference, MD: 32.8 m [95% credible interval, CrI: 6.1, 71.0]) but not compared to home exercise programs not informed by wearable activity monitors (MD: 4.7 m [95% CrI: −38.5, 55.4]). Conclusions: Home exercise informed by wearable activity monitors improve walking ability of patients with PAD. It is, however, unclear if activity monitoring informed exercise programs are more effective than exercise programs not using activity monitors.

This paper presents a system for behavioral, environmental, and physiological monitoring of working dogs using on-body and aerial sensors. The proof of concept study presented here includes two trained dogs performing nine scent detection tasks in an uncontrolled environment encompassing approximately two acres. The dogs were outfitted with a custom designed wearable harness to monitor their heart rate, activity levels and skin temperature. We utilized a commercially available micro-air vehicle to perform aerial sensing by tracking the terrain and movement of the dog in the outdoor space. The dogs were free to explore the space working at maximal speeds to complete a scent-based search-and-retrieval task. Throughout the experiment, the harness data was transferred to a base station via Wi-Fi in real-time. In this work, we also focused on testing the performance of a custom 3D electrode with application specific ergonomic improvements and adaptive filter processing techniques to recover as much electrocardiography data as possible during high intensity motion activity. We were able to recover and use 84% of the collected data where we observed a trend of heart rate generally increasing immediately after successful target localization. For tracking the dogs in the aerial video footage, we applied a state-of-the-art deep learning algorithm designed for online object tracking. Both qualitative and quantitative tracking results are very promising. This study presents an initial effort towards deployment of on-body and aerial sensors to monitor the working dogs and their environments during scent detection and search and rescue tasks in order to ensure their welfare, enable novel dog-machine interfaces, and allow for higher success rate of remote and automated task performance.

As the availability and use of wearables increases, they are becoming a promising platform for context sensing and context analysis. Smartwatches are a particularly interesting platform for this purpose, as they offer salient advantages, such as their proximity to the human body. However, they also have limitations associated with their small form factor, such as processing power and battery life, which makes it difficult to simply transfer smartphone-based context sensing and prediction models to smartwatches. In this paper, we introduce an energy-efficient, generic, integrated framework for continuous context sensing and prediction on smartwatches. Our work extends previous approaches for context sensing and prediction on wrist-mounted wearables that perform predictive analytics outside the device. We offer a generic sensing module and a novel energy-efficient, on-device prediction module that is based on a semantic abstraction approach to convert sensor data into meaningful information objects, similar to human perception of a behavior. Through six evaluations, we analyze the energy efficiency of our framework modules, identify the optimal file structure for data access and demonstrate an increase in accuracy of prediction through our semantic abstraction method. The proposed framework is hardware independent and can serve as a reference model for implementing context sensing and prediction on small wearable devices beyond smartwatches, such as body-mounted cameras.

A novel wearable multi-sensor data glove system is developed to explore the relation between finger spasticity and voluntary movement in patients with stroke. Many stroke patients suffer from finger spasticity, which is detrimental to their manual dexterity. Diagnosing and assessing the degrees of spasticity require neurological testing performed by trained professionals to estimate finger spasticity scores via the modified Ashworth scale (MAS). The proposed system offers an objective, quantitative solution to assess the finger spasticity of patients with stroke and complements the manual neurological test. In this work, the hardware and software components of this system are described. By requiring patients to perform five designated tasks, biomechanical measurements including linear and angular speed, acceleration, and pressure at every finger joint and upper limb are recorded, making up more than 1000 features for each task. We conducted a preliminary clinical test with 14 subjects using this system. Statistical analysis is performed on the acquired measurements to identify a small subset of features that are most likely to discriminate a healthy patient from patients suffering from finger spasticity. This encouraging result validates the feasibility of this proposed system to quantitatively and objectively assess finger spasticity.

Most commercial cadence-measurement systems in road cycling are strictly limited in their function to the measurement of cadence. Other relevant signals, such as roll angle, inclination or a round kick evaluation, cannot be measured with them. This work proposes an alternative cadence-measurement system with less of the mentioned restrictions, without the need for distinct cadence-measurement apparatus attached to the pedal and shaft of the road bicycle. The proposed design applies an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to the seating pole of the bike. In an experiment, the motion data were gathered. A total of four different road cyclists participated in this study to collect different datasets for neural network training and evaluation. In total, over 10 h of road cycling data were recorded and used to train the neural network. The network’s aim was to detect each revolution of the crank within the data. The evaluation of the data has shown that using pure accelerometer data from all three axes led to the best result in combination with the proposed network architecture. A working proof of concept was achieved with an accuracy of approximately 95% on test data. As the proof of concept can also be seen as a new method for measuring cadence, the method was compared with the ground truth. Comparing the ground truth and the predicted cadence, it can be stated that for the relevant range of 50 rpm and above, the prediction over-predicts the cadence with approximately 0.9 rpm with a standard deviation of 2.05 rpm. The results indicate that the proposed design is fully functioning and can be seen as an alternative method to detect the cadence of a road cyclist.

Every year in Europe more than 500 thousand injuries that involve the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are diagnosed. The ACL is one of the main restraints within the human knee, focused on stabilizing the joint and controlling the relative movement between the tibia and femur under mechanical stress (i.e., laxity). Ligament laxity measurement is clinically valuable for diagnosing ACL injury and comparing possible outcomes of surgical procedures. In general, knee laxity assessment is manually performed and provides information to clinicians which is mainly subjective. Only recently quantitative assessment of knee laxity through instrumental approaches has been introduced and become a fundamental asset in clinical practice. However, the current solutions provide only partial information about either static or dynamic laxity. To support a multiparametric approach using a single device, an innovative smart knee brace for knee laxity evaluation was developed. Equipped with stretchable strain sensors and inertial measurement units (IMUs), the wearable system was designed to provide quantitative information concerning the drawer, Lachman, and pivot shift tests. We specifically characterized IMUs by using a reference sensor. Applying the Bland–Altman method, the limit of agreement was found to be less than 0.06 m/s2 for the accelerometer, 0.06 rad/s for the gyroscope and 0.08 μT for the magnetometer. By using an appropriate characterizing setup, the average gauge factor of the three strain sensors was 2.169. Finally, we realized a pilot study to compare the outcomes with a marker-based optoelectronic stereophotogrammetric system to verify the validity of the designed system. The preliminary findings for the capability of the system to discriminate possible ACL lesions are encouraging; in fact, the smart brace could be an effective support for an objective and quantitative diagnosis of ACL tear by supporting the simultaneous assessment of both rotational and translational laxity. To obtain reliable information about the real effectiveness of the system, further clinical validation is necessary.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is frequently applied in sport-specific settings. The rising use of freely accessible applications for its recording requires validation processes to ensure accurate data. It is the aim of this study to compare the HRV data obtained by the Polar H10 sensor chest strap device and an electrocardiogram (ECG) with the focus on RR intervals and short-term scaling exponent alpha 1 of Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA a1) as non-linear metric of HRV analysis. A group of 25 participants performed an exhaustive cycling ramp with measurements of HRV with both recording systems. Average time between heartbeats (RR), heart rate (HR) and DFA a1 were recorded before (PRE), during, and after (POST) the exercise test. High correlations were found for the resting conditions (PRE: r = 0.95, rc = 0.95, ICC3,1 = 0.95, POST: r = 0.86, rc = 0.84, ICC3,1 = 0.85) and for the incremental exercise (r > 0.93, rc > 0.93, ICC3,1 > 0.93). While PRE and POST comparisons revealed no differences, significant bias could be found during the exercise test for all variables (p < 0.001). For RR and HR, bias and limits of agreement (LoA) in the Bland–Altman analysis were minimal (RR: bias of 0.7 to 0.4 ms with LoA of 4.3 to −2.8 ms during low intensity and 1.3 to −0.5 ms during high intensity, HR: bias of −0.1 to −0.2 ms with LoA of 0.3 to −0.5 ms during low intensity and 0.4 to −0.7 ms during high intensity). DFA a1 showed wider bias and LoAs (bias of 0.9 to 8.6% with LoA of 11.6 to −9.9% during low intensity and 58.1 to −40.9% during high intensity). Linear HRV measurements derived from the Polar H10 chest strap device show strong agreement and small bias compared with ECG recordings and can be recommended for practitioners. However, with respect to DFA a1, values in the uncorrelated range and during higher exercise intensities tend to elicit higher bias and wider LoA.
