This study introduces a lightweight storage system for wearable devices, aiming to optimize energy efficiency in long-term and continuous monitoring applications. Utilizing Direct Memory Access and the Serial Peripheral Interface protocol, the system ensures efficient data transfer, significantly reduces energy consumption, and enhances the device autonomy. Data organization into Time Block Data (TBD) units, rather than files, significantly diminishes control overhead, facilitating the streamlined management of periodic data recordings in wearable devices. A comparative analysis revealed marked improvements in energy efficiency and write speed over existing file systems, validating the proposed system as an effective solution for boosting wearable device performance in health monitoring and various long-term data acquisition scenarios.

Detecting people in images and videos captured from an aerial platform in wooded areas for search and rescue operations is a current problem. Detection is difficult due to the relatively small dimensions of the person captured by the sensor in relation to the environment. The environment can generate occlusion, complicating the timely detection of people. There are currently numerous RGB image datasets available that are used for person detection tasks in urban and wooded areas and consider the general characteristics of a person, like size, shape, and height, without considering the occlusion of the object of interest. The present research work focuses on developing a thermal image dataset, which considers the occlusion situation to develop CNN convolutional deep learning models to perform detection tasks in real-time from an aerial perspective using altitude control in a quadcopter prototype. Extended models are proposed considering the occlusion of the person, in conjunction with a thermal sensor, which allows for highlighting the desired characteristics of the occluded person.

A new gait phase detection system for continuous monitoring based on wireless sensorized insoles is presented. The system can be used in gait analysis mobile applications, and it is designed for real-time demarcation of gait phases. The system employs pressure sensors to assess the force exerted by each foot during walking. A fuzzy rule-based inference algorithm is implemented on a smartphone and used to detect each of the gait phases based on the sensor signals. Additionally, to provide a solution that is insensitive to perturbations caused by non-walking activities, a probabilistic classifier is employed to discriminate walking forward from other low-level activities, such as turning, walking backwards, lateral walking, etc. The combination of these two algorithms constitutes the first approach towards a continuous gait assessment system, by means of the avoidance of non-walking influences.

Obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century and it is a threat to the life of people according to World Health Organization. In this scenario, family environment is important to establish healthy habits which help to reduce levels of obesity and control overweight in children. However, little efforts have been focused on helping parents to promote and have healthy lifestyles. In this paper, we present two smart device-based notification prototypes to promote healthy behavior with the aim of avoiding childhood overweight and obesity. The first prototype helps parents to follow a healthy snack routine, based on a nutritionist suggestion. Using a fridge magnet, parents receive graphical reminders of which snacks they and their children should consume. The second prototype provides a graphical reminder that prevents parents from forgetting the required equipment to practice sports. Prototypes were evaluated by nine nutritionists from three countries (Costa Rica, Mexico and Spain). Evaluations were based on anticipation of use and the ergonomics of human–system interaction according to the ISO 9241-210. Results show that the system is considered useful. Even though they might not be willing to use the system, they would recommend it to their patients. Based on the ISO 9241-210 the best ranked features were the system’s comprehensibility, the perceived effectiveness and clarity. The worst ranked features were the system’s suitability for learning and its discriminability.

This paper proposes a new sensor using optical flow to stabilize a quadrotor when a GPS signal is not available. Normally, optical flow varies with the attitude of the aerial vehicle. This produces positive feedback on the attitude control that destabilizes the orientation of the vehicle. To avoid this, we propose a novel sensor using an optical flow camera with a 6DoF IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) mounted on a two-axis anti-shake stabilizer mobile aerial gimbal. We also propose a robust algorithm based on Sliding Mode Control for stabilizing the optical flow sensor downwards independently of the aerial vehicle attitude. This method improves the estimation of the position and velocity of the quadrotor. We present experimental results to show the performance of the proposed sensor and algorithms.
