State-of-the-art augmented reality (AR) glasses record their 3D pose in space, enabling measurements and analyses of clinical gait and balance tests. This study’s objective was to evaluate concurrent validity and test–retest reliability for common clinical gait and balance tests in people with Parkinson’s disease: Five Times Sit To Stand (FTSTS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) tests. Position and orientation data were collected in 22 participants with Parkinson’s disease using HoloLens 2 and Magic Leap 2 AR glasses, from which test completion durations and durations of distinct sub-parts (e.g., sit to stand, turning) were derived and compared to reference systems and over test repetitions. Regarding concurrent validity, for both tests, an excellent between-systems agreement was found for position and orientation time series (ICC(C,1) > 0.933) and test completion durations (ICC(A,1) > 0.984). Between-systems agreement for FTSTS (sub-)durations were all excellent (ICC(A,1) > 0.921). TUG turning sub-durations were excellent (turn 1, ICC(A,1) = 0.913) and moderate (turn 2, ICC(A,1) = 0.589). Regarding test–retest reliability, the within-system test–retest variation in test completion times and sub-durations was always much greater than the between-systems variation, implying that (sub-)durations may be derived interchangeably from AR and reference system data. In conclusion, AR data are of sufficient quality to evaluate gait and balance aspects in people with Parkinson’s disease, with valid quantification of test completion durations and sub-durations of distinct FTSTS and TUG sub-parts.

Gait speed is increasingly recognized as an important health indicator. However, gait analysis in clinical settings often encounters inconsistencies due to methodological variability and resource constraints. To address these challenges, GaitKeeper uses artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to standardize gait speed assessments. In laboratory conditions, GaitKeeper demonstrates close alignment with the Vicon system and, in clinical environments, it strongly correlates with the Gaitrite system. The integration of a cloud-based processing platform and robust data security positions GaitKeeper as an accurate, cost-effective, and user-friendly tool for gait assessment in diverse clinical settings.

This study evaluates an innovative control approach to assistive robotics by integrating brain–computer interface (BCI) technology and eye tracking into a shared control system for a mobile augmented reality user interface. Aimed at enhancing the autonomy of individuals with physical disabilities, particularly those with impaired motor function due to conditions such as stroke, the system utilizes BCI to interpret user intentions from electroencephalography signals and eye tracking to identify the object of focus, thus refining control commands. This integration seeks to create a more intuitive and responsive assistive robot control strategy. The real-world usability was evaluated, demonstrating significant potential to improve autonomy for individuals with severe motor impairments. The control system was compared with an eye-tracking-based alternative to identify areas needing improvement. Although BCI achieved an acceptable success rate of 0.83 in the final phase, eye tracking was more effective with a perfect success rate and consistently lower completion times (p<0.001). The user experience responses favored eye tracking in 11 out of 26 questions, with no significant differences in the remaining questions, and subjective fatigue was higher with BCI use (p=0.04). While BCI performance lagged behind eye tracking, the user evaluation supports the validity of our control strategy, showing that it could be deployed in real-world conditions and suggesting a pathway for further advancements.

In the global context, advancements in technology and science have rendered virtual, augmented, and mixed-reality technologies capable of transforming clinical care and medical environments by offering enhanced features and improved healthcare services. This paper aims to present a mixed reality-based system to control a robotic wheelchair for people with limited mobility. The test group comprised 11 healthy subjects (six male, five female, mean age 35.2 ± 11.7 years). A novel platform that integrates a smart wheelchair and an eye-tracking-enabled head-mounted display was proposed to reduce the cognitive requirements needed for wheelchair movement and control. The approach’s effectiveness was demonstrated by evaluating our system in realistic scenarios. The demonstration of the proposed AR head-mounted display user interface for controlling a smart wheelchair and the results provided in this paper could highlight the potential of the HoloLens 2-based innovative solutions and bring focus to emerging research topics, such as remote control, cognitive rehabilitation, the implementation of patient autonomy with severe disabilities, and telemedicine.

Recent advancements in communication technology have catalyzed the widespread adoption of realistic content, with augmented reality (AR) emerging as a pivotal tool for seamlessly integrating virtual elements into real-world environments. In construction, architecture, and urban design, the integration of mixed reality (MR) technology enables rapid interior spatial mapping, providing clients with immersive experiences to envision their desires. The rapid advancement of MR devices, or devices that integrate MR capabilities, offers users numerous opportunities for enhanced entertainment experiences. However, to support designers at a high level of expertise, it is crucial to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data provided by these devices. This study explored the potential of utilizing spatial mapping within various methodologies for surveying architectural interiors. The objective was to identify optimized spatial mapping procedures and determine the most effective applications for their use. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the interior survey performance, using HoloLens 2, an iPhone 13 Pro for spatial mapping, and photogrammetry. The findings indicate that HoloLens 2 is most suited for the tasks examined in the scope of these experiments. Nonetheless, based on the acquired parameters, the author also proposes approaches to apply the other technologies in specific real-world scenarios.

Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is an effective approach for the surgical treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). However, due to the complex anatomical structure around the hip joint and the limited field of view (FoV) during the surgery, it is challenging for surgeons to perform a PAO surgery. To solve this challenge, we propose a robot-assisted, augmented reality (AR)-guided surgical navigation system for PAO. The system mainly consists of a robot arm, an optical tracker, and a Microsoft HoloLens 2 headset, which is a state-of-the-art (SOTA) optical see-through (OST) head-mounted display (HMD). For AR guidance, we propose an optical marker-based AR registration method to estimate a transformation from the optical tracker coordinate system (COS) to the virtual space COS such that the virtual models can be superimposed on the corresponding physical counterparts. Furthermore, to guide the osteotomy, the developed system automatically aligns a bone saw with osteotomy planes planned in preoperative images. Then, it provides surgeons with not only virtual constraints to restrict movement of the bone saw but also AR guidance for visual feedback without sight diversion, leading to higher surgical accuracy and improved surgical safety. Comprehensive experiments were conducted to evaluate both the AR registration accuracy and osteotomy accuracy of the developed navigation system. The proposed AR registration method achieved an average mean absolute distance error (mADE) of 1.96 ± 0.43 mm. The robotic system achieved an average center translation error of 0.96 ± 0.23 mm, an average maximum distance of 1.31 ± 0.20 mm, and an average angular deviation of 3.77 ± 0.85°. Experimental results demonstrated both the AR registration accuracy and the osteotomy accuracy of the developed system.

Real-world understanding serves as a medium that bridges the information world and the physical world, enabling the realization of virtual–real mapping and interaction. However, scene understanding based solely on 2D images faces problems such as a lack of geometric information and limited robustness against occlusion. The depth sensor brings new opportunities, but there are still challenges in fusing depth with geometric and semantic priors. To address these concerns, our method considers the repeatability of video stream data and the sparsity of newly generated data. We introduce a sparsely correlated network architecture (SCN) designed explicitly for online RGBD instance segmentation. Additionally, we leverage the power of object-level RGB-D SLAM systems, thereby transcending the limitations of conventional approaches that solely emphasize geometry or semantics. We establish correlation over time and leverage this correlation to develop rules and generate sparse data. We thoroughly evaluate the system’s performance on the NYU Depth V2 and ScanNet V2 datasets, demonstrating that incorporating frame-to-frame correlation leads to significantly improved accuracy and consistency in instance segmentation compared to existing state-of-the-art alternatives. Moreover, using sparse data reduces data complexity while ensuring the real-time requirement of 18 fps. Furthermore, by utilizing prior knowledge of object layout understanding, we showcase a promising application of augmented reality, showcasing its potential and practicality.

This paper presents a fully automated experimental setup tailored for evaluating the effectiveness of augmented and virtual reality technologies in healthcare settings for regulatory purposes, with a focus on the characterization of depth sensors. The setup is constructed as a modular benchtop platform that enables quantitative analysis of depth cameras essential for extended reality technologies in a controlled environment. We detail a design concept and considerations for an experimental configuration aimed at simulating realistic scenarios for head-mounted displays. The system includes an observation platform equipped with a three-degree-of-freedom motorized system and a test object stage. To accurately replicate real-world scenarios, we utilized an array of sensors, including commonly available range-sensing cameras and commercial augmented reality headsets, notably the Intel RealSense L515 LiDAR camera, integrated into the motion control system. The paper elaborates on the system architecture and the automated data collection process. We discuss several evaluation studies performed with this setup, examining factors such as spatial resolution, Z-accuracy, and pixel-to-pixel correlation. These studies provide valuable insights into the precision and reliability of these technologies in simulated healthcare environments.

A significant percentage of bridges in the United States are serving beyond their 50-year design life, and many of them are in poor condition, making them vulnerable to fatigue cracks that can result in catastrophic failure. However, current fatigue crack inspection practice based on human vision is time-consuming, labor intensive, and prone to error. We present a novel human-centered bridge inspection methodology to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of fatigue crack detection by employing advanced technologies including computer vision and augmented reality (AR). In particular, a computer vision-based algorithm is developed to enable near-real-time fatigue crack detection by analyzing structural surface motion in a short video recorded by a moving camera of the AR headset. The approach monitors structural surfaces by tracking feature points and measuring variations in distances between feature point pairs to recognize the motion pattern associated with the crack opening and closing. Measuring distance changes between feature points, as opposed to their displacement changes before this improvement, eliminates the need of camera motion compensation and enables reliable and computationally efficient fatigue crack detection using the nonstationary AR headset. In addition, an AR environment is created and integrated with the computer vision algorithm. The crack detection results are transmitted to the AR headset worn by the bridge inspector, where they are converted into holograms and anchored on the bridge surface in the 3D real-world environment. The AR environment also provides virtual menus to support human-in-the-loop decision-making to determine optimal crack detection parameters. This human-centered approach with improved visualization and human–machine collaboration aids the inspector in making well-informed decisions in the field in a near-real-time fashion. The proposed crack detection method is comprehensively assessed using two laboratory test setups for both in-plane and out-of-plane fatigue cracks. Finally, using the integrated AR environment, a human-centered bridge inspection is conducted to demonstrate the efficacy and potential of the proposed methodology.

In recent decades, technological advancements have transformed the industry, highlighting the efficiency of automation and safety. The integration of augmented reality (AR) and gesture recognition has emerged as an innovative approach to create interactive environments for industrial equipment. Gesture recognition enhances AR applications by allowing intuitive interactions. This study presents a web-based architecture for the integration of AR and gesture recognition, designed to interact with industrial equipment. Emphasizing hardware-agnostic compatibility, the proposed structure offers an intuitive interaction with equipment control systems through natural gestures. Experimental validation, conducted using Google Glass, demonstrated the practical viability and potential of this approach in industrial operations. The development focused on optimizing the system’s software and implementing techniques such as normalization, clamping, conversion, and filtering to achieve accurate and reliable gesture recognition under different usage conditions. The proposed approach promotes safer and more efficient industrial operations, contributing to research in AR and gesture recognition. Future work will include improving the gesture recognition accuracy, exploring alternative gestures, and expanding the platform integration to improve the user experience.

In the era of aging civil infrastructure and growing concerns about rapid structural deterioration due to climate change, the demand for real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques has been predominant worldwide. Traditional SHM methods face challenges, including delays in processing acquired data from large structures, time-intensive dense instrumentation, and visualization of real-time structural information. To address these issues, this paper develops a novel real-time visualization method using Augmented Reality (AR) to enhance vibration-based onsite structural inspections. The proposed approach presents a visualization system designed for real-time fieldwork, enabling detailed multi-sensor analyses within the immersive environment of AR. Leveraging the remote connectivity of the AR device, real-time communication is established with an external database and Python library through a web server, expanding the analytical capabilities of data acquisition, and data processing, such as modal identification, and the resulting visualization of SHM information. The proposed system allows live visualization of time-domain, frequency-domain, and system identification information through AR. This paper provides an overview of the proposed technology and presents the results of a lab-scale experimental model. It is concluded that the proposed approach yields accurate processing of real-time data and visualization of system identification information by highlighting its potential to enhance efficiency and safety in SHM by integrating AR technology with real-world fieldwork.

Outdoor Location-Based Augmented Reality (LAR) applications require precise positioning for seamless integrations of virtual content into immersive experiences. However, common solutions in outdoor LAR applications rely on traditional smartphone sensor fusion methods, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and compasses, which often lack the accuracy needed for precise AR content alignments. In this paper, we introduce an innovative approach to enhance LAR anchor precision in outdoor environments. We leveraged Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) technology, in combination with innovative cloud-based methodologies, and harnessed the extensive visual reference database of Google Street View (GSV), to address the accuracy limitation problems. For the evaluation, 10 Point of Interest (POI) locations were used as anchor point coordinates in the experiments. We compared the accuracies between our approach and the common sensor fusion LAR solution comprehensively involving accuracy benchmarking and running load performance testing. The results demonstrate substantial enhancements in overall positioning accuracies compared to conventional GPS-based approaches for aligning AR anchor content in the real world.

The industry is currently undergoing a digital revolution driven by the integration of several enabling technologies. These include automation, robotics, cloud computing, industrial cybersecurity, systems integration, digital twins, etc. Of particular note is the increasing use of digital twins, which offer significant added value by providing realistic and fully functional process simulations. This paper proposes an approach for developing digital twins in industrial environments. The novelty lies in not only focusing on obtaining the model of the industrial system and integrating virtual reality and/or augmented reality but also in emphasizing the importance of incorporating other enabled technologies of Industry 4.0, such as system integration, connectivity with standard and specific industrial protocols, cloud services, or new industrial automation systems, to enhance the capabilities of the digital twin. Furthermore, a proposal of the software tools that can be used to achieve this incorporation is made. Unity is chosen as the real-time 3D development tool for its cross-platform capability and streamlined industrial system modeling. The integration of augmented reality is facilitated by the Vuforia SDK. Node-RED is selected as the system integration option, and communications are carried out with MQTT protocol. Finally, cloud-based services are recommended for effective data storage and processing. Furthermore, this approach has been used to develop a digital twin of a robotic electro-pneumatic cell.

Visual localization refers to the process of determining an observer’s pose by analyzing the spatial relationships between a query image and a pre-existing set of images. In this procedure, matched visual features between images are identified and utilized for pose estimation; consequently, the accuracy of the estimation heavily relies on the precision of feature matching. Incorrect feature matchings, such as those between different objects and/or different points within an object in an image, should thus be avoided. In this paper, our initial evaluation focused on gauging the reliability of each object class within image datasets concerning pose estimation accuracy. This assessment revealed the building class to be reliable, while humans exhibited unreliability across diverse locations. The subsequent study delved deeper into the degradation of pose estimation accuracy by artificially increasing the proportion of the unreliable object—humans. The findings revealed a noteworthy decline started when the average proportion of the humans in the images exceeded 20%. We discuss the results and implications for dataset construction for visual localization.

Addressing conventional neurosurgical navigation systems’ high costs and complexity, this study explores the feasibility and accuracy of a simplified, cost-effective mixed reality navigation (MRN) system based on a laser crosshair simulator (LCS). A new automatic registration method was developed, featuring coplanar laser emitters and a recognizable target pattern. The workflow was integrated into Microsoft’s HoloLens-2 for practical application. The study assessed the system’s precision by utilizing life-sized 3D-printed head phantoms based on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 19 patients (female/male: 7/12, average age: 54.4 ± 18.5 years) with intracranial lesions. Six to seven CT/MRI-visible scalp markers were used as reference points per case. The LCS-MRN’s accuracy was evaluated through landmark-based and lesion-based analyses, using metrics such as target registration error (TRE) and Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). The system demonstrated immersive capabilities for observing intracranial structures across all cases. Analysis of 124 landmarks showed a TRE of 3.0 ± 0.5 mm, consistent across various surgical positions. The DSC of 0.83 ± 0.12 correlated significantly with lesion volume (Spearman rho = 0.813, p < 0.001). Therefore, the LCS-MRN system is a viable tool for neurosurgical planning, highlighting its low user dependency, cost-efficiency, and accuracy, with prospects for future clinical application enhancements.

Accurate prediction of the estrus period is crucial for optimizing insemination efficiency and reducing costs in animal husbandry, a vital sector for global food production. Precise estrus period determination is essential to avoid economic losses, such as milk production reductions, delayed calf births, and disqualification from government support. The proposed method integrates estrus period detection with cow identification using augmented reality (AR). It initiates deep learning-based mounting detection, followed by identifying the mounting region of interest (ROI) using YOLOv5. The ROI is then cropped with padding, and cow ID detection is executed using YOLOv5 on the cropped ROI. The system subsequently records the identified cow IDs. The proposed system accurately detects mounting behavior with 99% accuracy, identifies the ROI where mounting occurs with 98% accuracy, and detects the mounting couple with 94% accuracy. The high success of all operations with the proposed system demonstrates its potential contribution to AR and artificial intelligence applications in livestock farming.

The integration of Deep Learning (DL) models with the HoloLens2 Augmented Reality (AR) headset has enormous potential for real-time AR medical applications. Currently, most applications execute the models on an external server that communicates with the headset via Wi-Fi. This client-server architecture introduces undesirable delays and lacks reliability for real-time applications. However, due to HoloLens2’s limited computation capabilities, running the DL model directly on the device and achieving real-time performances is not trivial. Therefore, this study has two primary objectives: (i) to systematically evaluate two popular frameworks to execute DL models on HoloLens2—Unity Barracuda and Windows Machine Learning (WinML)—using the inference time as the primary evaluation metric; (ii) to provide benchmark values for state-of-the-art DL models that can be integrated in different medical applications (e.g., Yolo and Unet models). In this study, we executed DL models with various complexities and analyzed inference times ranging from a few milliseconds to seconds. Our results show that Unity Barracuda is significantly faster than WinML (p-value < 0.005). With our findings, we sought to provide practical guidance and reference values for future studies aiming to develop single, portable AR systems for real-time medical assistance.

During the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic, robotic-based systems for swab sampling were developed to reduce burdens on healthcare workers and their risk of infection. Teleoperated sampling systems are especially appreciated as they fundamentally prevent contact with suspected COVID-19 patients. However, the limited field of view of the installed cameras prevents the operator from recognizing the position and deformation of the swab inserted into the nasal cavity, which highly decreases the operating performance. To overcome this limitation, this study proposes a visual feedback system that monitors and reconstructs the shape of an NP swab using augmented reality (AR). The sampling device contained three load cells and measured the interaction force applied to the swab, while the shape information was captured using a motion-tracking program. These datasets were used to train a one-dimensional convolution neural network (1DCNN) model, which estimated the coordinates of three feature points of the swab in 2D X–Y plane. Based on these points, the virtual shape of the swab, reflecting the curvature of the actual one, was reconstructed and overlaid on the visual display. The accuracy of the 1DCNN model was evaluated on a 2D plane under ten different bending conditions. The results demonstrate that the x-values of the predicted points show errors of under 0.590 mm from P0, while those of P1 and P2 show a biased error of about −1.5 mm with constant standard deviations. For the y-values, the error of all feature points under positive bending is uniformly estimated with under 1 mm of difference, when the error under negative bending increases depending on the amount of deformation. Finally, experiments using a collaborative robot validate its ability to visualize the actual swab’s position and deformation on the camera image of 2D and 3D phantoms.

Normal-hearing people use sound as a cue to recognize various events that occur in their surrounding environment; however, this is not possible for deaf and hearing of hard (DHH) people, and in such a context they may not be able to freely detect their surrounding environment. Therefore, there is an opportunity to create a convenient device that can detect sounds occurring in daily life and present them visually instead of auditorily. Additionally, it is of great importance to appropriately evaluate how such a supporting device would change the lives of DHH people. The current study proposes an augmented-reality-based system for presenting household sounds to DHH people as visual information. We examined the effect of displaying both the icons indicating sounds classified by machine learning and a dynamic spectrogram indicating the real-time time–frequency characteristics of the environmental sounds. First, the issues that DHH people perceive as problems in their daily lives were investigated through a survey, suggesting that DHH people need to visualize their surrounding sound environment. Then, after the accuracy of the machine-learning-based classifier installed in the proposed system was validated, the subjective impression of how the proposed system increased the comfort of daily life was obtained through a field experiment in a real residence. The results confirmed that the comfort of daily life in household spaces can be improved by combining not only the classification results of machine learning but also the real-time display of spectrograms.

Currently, strawberry harvesting relies heavily on human labour and subjective assessments of ripeness, resulting in inconsistent post-harvest quality. Therefore, the aim of this work is to automate this process and provide a more accurate and efficient way of assessing ripeness. We explored a unique combination of YOLOv7 object detection and augmented reality technology to detect and visualise the ripeness of strawberries. Our results showed that the proposed YOLOv7 object detection model, which employed transfer learning, fine-tuning and multi-scale training, accurately identified the level of ripeness of each strawberry with an mAP of 0.89 and an F1 score of 0.92. The tiny models have an average detection time of 18 ms per frame at a resolution of 1280 × 720 using a high-performance computer, thereby enabling real-time detection in the field. Our findings distinctly establish the superior performance of YOLOv7 when compared to other cutting-edge methodologies. We also suggest using Microsoft HoloLens 2 to overlay predicted ripeness labels onto each strawberry in the real world, providing a visual representation of the ripeness level. Despite some challenges, this work highlights the potential of augmented reality to assist farmers in harvesting support, which could have significant implications for current agricultural practices.

This paper proposes an algorithm for transmitting and reconstructing the estimated point cloud by temporally estimating a dynamic point cloud sequence. When a non-rigid 3D point cloud sequence (PCS) is input, the sequence is divided into groups of point cloud frames (PCFs), and a key PCF is selected. The 3D skeleton is predicted through 3D pose estimation, and the motion of the skeleton is estimated by analyzing the joints and bones of the 3D skeleton. For the deformation of the non-rigid human PC, the 3D PC model is transformed into a mesh model, and the key PCF is rigged using the 3D skeleton. After deforming the key PCF into the target PCF utilizing the motion vector of the estimated skeleton, the residual PC between the motion compensation PCF and the target PCF is generated. If there is a key PCF, the motion vector of the target PCF, and a residual PC, the target PCF can be reconstructed. Just as compression is performed using pixel correlation between frames in a 2D video, this paper compresses 3D PCFs by estimating the non-rigid 3D motion of a 3D object in a 3D PC. The proposed algorithm can be regarded as an extension of the 2D motion estimation of a rigid local region in a 2D plane to the 3D motion estimation of a non-rigid object (human) in 3D space. Experimental results show that the proposed method can successfully compress 3D PC sequences. If it is used together with a PC compression technique such as MPEG PCC (point cloud compression) in the future, a system with high compression efficiency may be configured.

In the context of web augmented reality (AR), 3D rendering that maintains visual quality and frame rate requirements remains a challenge. The lack of a dedicated and efficient 3D format often results in the degraded visual quality of the original data and compromises the user experience. This paper examines the integration of web-streamable view-dependent representations of large-sized and high-resolution 3D models in web AR applications. The developed cross-platform prototype exploits the batched multi-resolution structures of the Nexus.js library as a dedicated lightweight web AR format and tests it against common formats and compression techniques. Built with AR.js and Three.js open-source libraries, it allows the overlay of the multi-resolution models by interactively adjusting the position, rotation and scale parameters. The proposed method includes real-time view-dependent rendering, geometric instancing and 3D pose regression for two types of AR: natural feature tracking (NFT) and location-based positioning for large and textured 3D overlays. The prototype achieves up to a 46% speedup in rendering time compared to optimized glTF models, while a 34 M vertices 3D model is visible in less than 4 s without degraded visual quality in slow 3D networks. The evaluation under various scenes and devices offers insights into how a multi-resolution scheme can be adopted in web AR for high-quality visualization and real-time performance.

The use of augmented reality (AR) technology is growing in the maintenance industry because it can improve efficiency and reduce costs by providing real-time guidance and instruction to workers during repairs and maintenance tasks. AR can also assist with equipment training and visualization, allowing users to explore the equipment’s internal structure and size. The adoption of AR in maintenance is expected to increase as hardware options expand and development costs decrease. To implement AR for job aids in mobile applications, 3D spatial information and equipment details must be addressed, and calibrated using image-based or object-based tracking, which is essential for integrating 3D models with physical components. The present paper suggests a system using AR-assisted deep reinforcement learning (RL)-based model for NanoDrop Spectrophotometer training and maintenance purposes that can be used for rapid repair procedures in the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) setting. The system uses a camera to detect the target asset via feature matching, tracking techniques, and 3D modeling. Once the detection is completed, AR technologies generate clear and easily understandable instructions for the maintenance operator’s device. According to the research findings, the model’s target technique resulted in a mean reward of 1.000 and a standard deviation of 0.000. This means that all the rewards that were obtained in the given task or environment were exactly the same. The fact that the reward standard deviation is 0.000 shows that there is no variability in the outcomes.

Location-based Augmented Reality applications are increasingly used in many research and commercial fields. Some of the fields that these applications are used are recreational digital games, tourism, education, and marketing. This study aims to present a location-based augmented reality (AR) application for cultural heritage communication and education. The application was created to inform the public, especially K12 students, about a district of their city with cultural heritage value. Furthermore, Google Earth was utilized to create an interactive virtual tour for consolidating the knowledge acquired by the location-based AR application. A scheme for evaluating the AR application was also constructed using factors suitable for location-based applications: challenge, educational usefulness (knowledge), collaboration, and intention to reuse. A sample of 309 students evaluated the application. Descriptive statistical analysis showed that the application scored well in all factors, especially in challenge and knowledge (mean values 4.21 and 4.12). Furthermore, structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis led to a model construction that represents how the factors are causally related. Based on the findings, the perceived challenge significantly influenced the perceived educational usefulness (knowledge) (b = 0.459, sig = 0.000) and interaction levels (b = 0.645, sig = 0.000). Interaction amongst users also had a significant positive impact on users’ perceived educational usefulness (b = 0.374, sig = 0.000), which in turn influenced users’ intention to reuse the application (b = 0.624, sig = 0.000).

When producing an engaging augmented reality (AR) user experience, it is crucial to create AR content that mimics real-life objects’ behavior to the greatest extent possible. A critical aspect to achieve this is ensuring that the digital objects conform to line-of-sight rules and are either partially or completely occluded, just like real-world objects would be. The study explores the concept of utilizing a pre-existing 3D representation of the physical environment as an occlusion mask that governs the rendering of each pixel. Specifically, the research aligns a Level of Detail (LOD) 1 building model and a 3D mesh model with their real-world counterparts and evaluates the effectiveness of occlusion between the two models in an outdoor setting. Despite the mesh model containing more detailed information, the overall results do not show improvement. In an indoor scenario, the researchers leverage the scanning capability of HoloLens 2.0 to create a pre-scanned representation, which helps overcome the limited range and delay of the mesh reconstruction.

The rapid development of information and communication technology has fostered a natural integration of technology and design. As a result, there is increasing interest in Augmented Reality (AR) business card systems that leverage digital media. This research aims to advance the design of an AR-based participatory business card information system in line with contemporary trends. Key aspects of this study include applying technology to acquire contextual information from paper business cards, transmitting it to a server, and delivering it to mobile devices; facilitating interactivity between users and content through a screen interface; providing multimedia business content (video, image, text, 3D elements) via image markers recognized by users on mobile devices, while also adapting the type and method of content delivery. The AR business card system designed in this research enhances traditional paper business cards by incorporating visual information and interactive elements and automatically generating buttons linked to phone numbers, location information, and homepages. This innovative approach enables users to interact and enriches their overall experience while adhering to strict quality control measures.

Maintenance of home appliances can be tedious. Maintenance work can be physically demanding and it is not always easy to know the cause of a malfunctioning appliance. Many users need to motivate themselves to perform maintenance work and consider it ideal for home appliances to be maintenance-free. On the other hand, pets and other living creatures can be taken care of with joy and without much pain, even if they are difficult to take care of. To alleviate the hassle associated with the maintenance of home appliances, we propose an augmented reality (AR) system to superimpose an agent over the home appliance of concern who changes their behavior according to the internal state of the appliance. Taking a refrigerator as an example, we verify whether such AR agent visualization motivates users to perform maintenance work and reduces the associated discomfort. We designed a cartoon-like agent and implemented a prototype system using a HoloLens 2, which can switch between several animations depending on the internal state of the refrigerator. Using the prototype system, a Wizard of Oz user study comparing three conditions was conducted. We compared the proposed method (Animacy condition), an additional behavior method (Intelligence condition), and a text-based method as a baseline for presenting the refrigerator state. In the Intelligence condition, the agent looked at the participants from time to time as if it was aware of them and exhibited help-seeking behavior only when it was considered that they could take a short break. The results show that both the Animacy and Intelligence conditions induced animacy perception and a sense of intimacy. It was also evident that the agent visualization made the participants feel more pleasant. On the other hand, the sense of discomfort was not reduced by the agent visualization and the Intelligence condition did not improve the perceived intelligence or the sense of coercion further compared to the Animacy condition.

Context: This review aimed to synthesize the literature on the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of immersive virtual technologies to promote physical exercise in older people. Method: We performed a literature review, based on four databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Scopus; last search: 30 January 2023). Eligible studies had to use immersive technology with participants aged 60 years and over. The results regarding acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of immersive technology-based interventions in older people were extracted. The standardized mean differences were then computed using a random model effect. Results: In total, 54 relevant studies (1853 participants) were identified through search strategies. Concerning the acceptability, most participants reported a pleasant experience and a desire to use the technology again. The average increase in the pre/post Simulator Sickness Questionnaire score was 0.43 in healthy subjects and 3.23 in subjects with neurological disorders, demonstrating this technology’s feasibility. Regarding the effectiveness, our meta-analysis showed a positive effect of the use of virtual reality technology on balance (SMD = 1.05; 95% CI: 0.75–1.36; p < 0.001) and gait outcomes (SMD = 0.7; 95% CI: 0.14–0.80; p < 0.001). However, these results suffered from inconsistency and the number of trials dealing with these outcomes remains low, calling for further studies. Conclusions: Virtual reality seems to be well accepted by older people and its use with this population is feasible. However, more studies are needed to conclude its effectiveness in promoting exercise in older people.

People with diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs) need to perform self-care consistently over many months to promote healing and to mitigate risks of hospitalisation and amputation. However, during that time, improvement in their DFU can be hard to detect. Hence, there is a need for an accessible method to self-monitor DFUs at home. We developed a new mobile phone app, “MyFootCare”, to self-monitor DFU healing progression from photos of the foot. The aim of this study is to evaluate the engagement and perceived value of MyFootCare for people with a plantar DFU over 3 months’ duration. Data are collected through app log data and semi-structured interviews (weeks 0, 3, and 12) and analysed through descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Ten out of 12 participants perceive MyFootCare as valuable to monitor progress and to reflect on events that affected self-care, and seven participants see it as potentially valuable to enhance consultations. Three app engagement patterns emerge: continuous, temporary, and failed engagement. These patterns highlight enablers for self-monitoring (such as having MyFootCare installed on the participant’s phone) and barriers (such as usability issues and lack of healing progress). We conclude that while many people with DFUs perceive app-based self-monitoring as valuable, actual engagement can be achieved for some but not for all people because of various facilitators and barriers. Further research should target improving usability, accuracy and sharing with healthcare professionals and test clinical outcomes when using the app.

Older adults’ independent life is compromised due to various problems, such as memory impairments and decision-making difficulties. This work initially proposes an integrated conceptual model for assisted living systems capable of providing helping means for older adults with mild memory impairments and their caregivers. The proposed model has four main components: (1) an indoor location and heading measurement unit in the local fog layer, (2) an augmented reality (AR) application to make interactions with the user, (3) an IoT-based fuzzy decision-making system to handle the direct and environmental interactions with the user, and (4) a user interface for caregivers to monitor the situation in real time and send reminders once required. Then, a preliminary proof-of-concept implementation is performed to evaluate the suggested mode’s feasibility. Functional experiments are carried out based on various factual scenarios, which validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The accuracy and response time of the proposed proof-of-concept system are further examined. The results suggest that implementing such a system is feasible and has the potential to promote assisted living. The suggested system has the potential to promote scalable and customizable assisted living systems to reduce the challenges of independent living for older adults.

Navigation is often regarded as one of the most-exciting use cases for Augmented Reality (AR). Current AR Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) are rather bulky and cumbersome to use and, therefore, do not offer a satisfactory user experience for the mass market yet. However, the latest-generation smartphones offer AR capabilities out of the box, with sometimes even pre-installed apps. Apple’s framework ARKit is available on iOS devices, free to use for developers. Android similarly features a counterpart, ARCore. Both systems work well for small spatially confined applications, but lack global positional awareness. This is a direct result of one limitation in current mobile technology. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) are relatively inaccurate and often cannot work indoors due to the restriction of the signal to penetrate through solid objects, such as walls. In this paper, we present the Pedestrian Augmented Reality Navigator (PAReNt) iOS app as a solution to this problem. The app implements a data fusion technique to increase accuracy in global positioning and showcases AR navigation as one use case for the improved data. ARKit provides data about the smartphone’s motion, which is fused with GNSS data and a Bluetooth indoor positioning system via a Kalman Filter (KF). Four different KFs with different underlying models have been implemented and independently evaluated to find the best filter. The evaluation measures the app’s accuracy against a ground truth under controlled circumstances. Two main testing methods were introduced and applied to determine which KF works best. Depending on the evaluation method, this novel approach improved the accuracy by 57% (when GPS and AR were used) or 32% (when Bluetooth and AR were used) over the raw sensor data.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the world and the fifth-leading cause of cancer-related death. Treatment is effective in the early stages. Thus, a need to screen considerable portions of the population is crucial. When the screening procedure uncovers a suspect lesion, a biopsy is performed to assess its potential for malignancy. This procedure is usually performed using real-time Ultrasound (US) imaging. This work proposes a visualization system for US breast biopsy. It consists of an application running on AR glasses that interact with a computer application. The AR glasses track the position of QR codes mounted on an US probe and a biopsy needle. US images are shown in the user’s field of view with enhanced lesion visualization and needle trajectory. To validate the system, latency of the transmission of US images was evaluated. Usability assessment compared our proposed prototype with a traditional approach with different users. It showed that needle alignment was more precise, with 92.67 ± 2.32° in our prototype versus 89.99 ± 37.49° in a traditional system. The users also reached the lesion more accurately. Overall, the proposed solution presents promising results, and the use of AR glasses as a tracking and visualization device exhibited good performance.

Medical ultrasound (US) is a commonly used modality for image-guided procedures. Recent research systems providing an in situ visualization of 2D US images via an augmented reality (AR) head-mounted display (HMD) were shown to be advantageous over conventional imaging through reduced task completion times and improved accuracy. In this work, we continue in the direction of recent developments by describing the first AR HMD application visualizing real-time volumetric (3D) US in situ for guiding vascular punctures. We evaluated the application on a technical level as well as in a mixed-methods user study with a qualitative prestudy and a quantitative main study, simulating a vascular puncture. Participants completed the puncture task significantly faster when using 3D US AR mode compared to 2D US AR, with a decrease of 28.4% in time. However, no significant differences were observed regarding the success rate of vascular puncture (2D US AR—50% vs. 3D US AR—72%). On the technical side, the system offers a low latency of 49.90 ± 12.92 ms and a satisfactory frame rate of 60 Hz. Our work shows the feasibility of a system that visualizes real-time 3D US data via an AR HMD, and our experiments show, furthermore, that this may offer additional benefits in US-guided tasks (i.e., reduced task completion time) over 2D US images viewed in AR by offering a vividly volumetric visualization.

New generation wearable devices allow for the development of interactive environments tailored for Virtual Reality (VR)– and Augmented Reality (AR)–based treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Experts agree on their potential; however, there is lack of consensus on how to perform trials and the need arises for evaluation frameworks, methods, and techniques appropriate for the ASD population. In this paper, we report on a study conducted with high-functioning ASD people in the 21–23 age range, with the objectives of (1) evaluating the engagement of two headsets offering distinct immersive experiences, (2) reasoning on the interpretation of engagement factors in the case of ASD people, and (3) translating results into general guidelines for the development of VR/AR-based ASD treatment. To this aim, we (1) designed two engagement evaluation frameworks based on behavioral observation measures, (2) set up two packages of reference immersive scenarios, (3) defined the association between metrics and scenarios, and (4) administered the scenarios in distinct sessions for the investigated headsets. Results show that the immersive experiences are engaging and that the apparent lack of success of some evaluation factors can become potential advantages within the framework of VR/AR-based ASD treatment design.

This paper proposes an indoor location-based augmented reality framework (ILARF) for the development of indoor augmented-reality (AR) systems. ILARF integrates an indoor localization unit (ILU), a secure context-aware message exchange unit (SCAMEU), and an AR visualization and interaction unit (ARVIU). The ILU runs on a mobile device such as a smartphone and utilizes visible markers (e.g., images and text), invisible markers (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, and NFC signals), and device sensors (e.g., accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers) to determine the device location and direction. The SCAMEU utilizes a message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) server to exchange ambient sensor data (e.g., temperature, light, and humidity readings) and user data (e.g., user location and user speed) for context-awareness. The unit also employs a web server to manage user profiles and settings. The ARVIU uses AR creation tools to handle user interaction and display context-aware information in appropriate areas of the device’s screen. One prototype AR app for use in gyms, Gym Augmented Reality (GAR), was developed based on ILARF. Users can register their profiles and configure settings when using GAR to visit a gym. Then, GAR can help users locate appropriate gym equipment based on their workout programs or favorite exercise specified in their profiles. GAR provides instructions on how to properly use the gym equipment and also makes it possible for gym users to socialize with each other, which may motivate them to go to the gym regularly. GAR is compared with other related AR systems. The comparison shows that GAR is superior to others by virtue of its use of ILARF; specifically, it provides more information, such as user location and direction, and has more desirable properties, such as secure communication and a 3D graphical user interface.

This study aims to report on the capability of microscope-based augmented reality (AR) to evaluate registration and navigation accuracy with extracranial and intracranial landmarks and to elaborate on its opportunities and obstacles in compensation for navigation inaccuracies. In a consecutive single surgeon series of 293 patients, automatic intraoperative computed tomography-based registration was performed delivering a high initial registration accuracy with a mean target registration error of 0.84 ± 0.36 mm. Navigation accuracy is evaluated by overlaying a maximum intensity projection or pre-segmented object outlines within the recent focal plane onto the in situ patient anatomy and compensated for by translational and/or rotational in-plane transformations. Using bony landmarks (85 cases), there was two cases where a mismatch was seen. Cortical vascular structures (242 cases) showed a mismatch in 43 cases and cortex representations (40 cases) revealed two inaccurate cases. In all cases, with detected misalignment, a successful spatial compensation was performed (mean correction: bone (6.27 ± 7.31 mm), vascular (3.00 ± 1.93 mm, 0.38° ± 1.06°), and cortex (5.31 ± 1.57 mm, 1.75° ± 2.47°)) increasing navigation accuracy. AR support allows for intermediate and straightforward monitoring of accuracy, enables compensation of spatial misalignments, and thereby provides additional safety by increasing overall accuracy.

Condition assessment of civil engineering structures has been an active research area due to growing concerns over the safety of aged as well as new civil structures. Utilization of emerging immersive visualization technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) in the architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has demonstrated that these visualization tools can be paradigm-shifting. Extended Reality (XR), an umbrella term for VR, AR, and MR technologies, has found many diverse use cases in the AEC industry. Despite this exciting trend, there is no review study on the usage of XR technologies for the condition assessment of civil structures. Thus, the present paper aims to fill this gap by presenting a literature review encompassing the utilization of XR technologies for the condition assessment of civil structures. This study aims to provide essential information and guidelines for practitioners and researchers on using XR technologies to maintain the integrity and safety of civil structures.

Augmented reality (AR) may be a useful tool for the delivery of dual-task training. This manuscript details the development of the Dual-task Augmented Reality Treatment (DART) platform for individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and reports initial feasibility, usability, and efficacy of the DART platform in provoking dual-task interference in individuals with PD. The DART platform utilizes the head-mounted Microsoft HoloLens2 AR device to deliver concurrent motor and cognitive tasks. Biomechanical metrics of gait and cognitive responses are automatically computed and provided to the supervising clinician. To assess feasibility, individuals with PD (N = 48) completed a bout of single-task and dual-task walking using the DART platform. Usability was assessed by the System Usability Scale (SUS). Dual-task interference was assessed by comparing single-task walking and walking during an obstacle course while performing a cognitive task. Average gait velocity decreased from 1.06 to 0.82 m/s from single- to dual-task conditions. Mean SUS scores were 81.3 (11.3), which placed the DART in the “good” to “excellent” category. To our knowledge, the DART platform is the first to use a head-mounted AR system to deliver a dual-task paradigm and simultaneously provide biomechanical data that characterize cognitive and motor performance. Individuals with PD were able to successfully use the DART platform with satisfaction, and dual-task interference was provoked. The DART platform should be investigated as a platform to treat dual-task declines associated with PD.

Square markers are a widespread tool to find correspondences for camera localization because of their robustness, accuracy, and detection speed. Their identification is usually based on a binary encoding that accounts for the different rotations of the marker; however, most systems do not consider the possibility of observing reflected markers. This case is possible in environments containing mirrors or reflective surfaces, and its lack of consideration is a source of detection errors, which is contrary to the robustness expected from square markers. This is the first work in the literature that focuses on reflection-aware square marker dictionaries. We present the derivation of the inter-marker distance of a reflection-aware dictionary and propose new algorithms for generating and identifying such dictionaries. Additionally, part of the proposed method can be used to optimize preexisting dictionaries to take reflection into account. The experimentation carried out demonstrates how our proposal greatly outperforms the most popular predefined dictionaries in terms of inter-marker distance and how the optimization process significantly improves them.

Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in deploying state-of-the-art augmented reality (AR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) for agri-food applications. The benefits of AR HMDs to agri-food industry stakeholders (e.g., food suppliers, retail/food service) have received growing attention and recognition. AR HMDs enable users to make healthier dietary choices, experience novel changes in their perception of taste, enhance the cooking and food shopping experience, improve productivity at work and enhance the implementation of precision farming. Therefore, although development costs are still high, the case for integration of AR in food chains appears to be compelling. This review will present the most recent developments of AR HMDs for agri-food relevant applications. The summarized applications can be clustered into different themes: (1) dietary and food nutrition assessment; (2) food sensory science; (3) changing the eating environment; (4) retail food chain applications; (5) enhancing the cooking experience; (6) food-related training and learning; and (7) food production and precision farming. Limitations of current practices will be highlighted, along with some proposed applications.

Cooking at home is a critical survival skill. We propose a new cooking assistance system in which a user only needs to wear an all-in-one augmented reality (AR) headset without having to install any external sensors or devices in the kitchen. Utilizing the built-in camera and cutting-edge computer vision (CV) technology, the user can direct the AR headset to recognize available food ingredients by simply looking at them. Based on the types of the recognized food ingredients, suitable recipes are suggested accordingly. A step-by-step video tutorial providing details of the selected recipe is then displayed with the AR glasses. The user can conveniently interact with the proposed system using eight kinds of natural hand gestures without needing to touch any devices throughout the entire cooking process. Compared with the deep learning models ResNet and ResNeXt, experimental results show that the YOLOv5 achieves lower accuracy for ingredient recognition, but it can locate and classify multiple ingredients in one shot and make the scanning process easier for users. Twenty participants test the prototype system and provide feedback via two questionnaires. Based on the analysis results, 19 of the 20 participants would recommend others to use the proposed system, and all participants are overall satisfied with the prototype system.

In the world reference context, although virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality have been emerging methodologies for several years, only today technological and scientific advances have made them suitable to revolutionize clinical care and medical contexts through the provision of enhanced functionalities and improved health services. This systematic review provides the state-of-the-art applications of the Microsoft® HoloLens 2 in a medical and healthcare context. Focusing on the potential that this technology has in providing digitally supported clinical care, also but not only in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, studies that proved the applicability and feasibility of HoloLens 2 in a medical and healthcare scenario were considered. The review presents a thorough examination of the different studies conducted since 2019, focusing on HoloLens 2 medical sub-field applications, device functionalities provided to users, software/platform/framework used, as well as the study validation. The results provided in this paper could highlight the potential and limitations of the HoloLens 2-based innovative solutions and bring focus to emerging research topics, such as telemedicine, remote control and motor rehabilitation.

Mobile applications on smartphones and tablets have become part of our everyday lives. The number of augmented reality (AR) technology applications is also increasing. Augmented reality has proven to be effective in various areas of human life, from education, marketing, and training to navigation. All people have the right to access information and use available technologies, but not everyone has the same opportunities. To contribute to the digital inclusion of people who are often disadvantaged in this regard, we should think about the accessibility of digital technologies, including mobile augmented reality (MAR). The specificity of MAR is a new way of human–computer interaction compared to traditional mobile solutions. The objective of this review paper is to analyze the handheld AR solutions developed for people with different disabilities to identify accessibility challenges related to interaction when performing different tasks in AR. It also explores and presents accessibility features and other accessibility best practices, as well as potential future research directions related to the personalization and customization of such solutions for individuals. The results of this literature review can contribute to the creation of accessibility guidelines in the field of handheld AR and encourage the development of accessible AR solutions that can benefit not only people with disabilities but also people without disabilities.

This work proposes an augmented reality serious game (ARSG) for supporting individuals with motor disabilities while controlling robotic wheelchairs. A racing track was used as the game narrative; this included restriction areas, static and dynamic virtual objects, as well as obstacles and signs. To experience the game, a prior configuration of the environment, made through a smartphone or a computer, was required. Furthermore, a visualization tool was developed to exhibit user performance while using the ARSG. Two user studies were conducted with 10 and 20 participants, respectively, to compare (1) how different devices enable configuring the ARSG, and (2) different tracking capabilities, i.e., methods used to place virtual content on the real-world environment while the user interacts with the game and controls the wheelchair in the physical space: C1—motion tracking using cloud anchors; C2—offline motion tracking. Results suggest that configuring the environment with the computer is more efficient and accurate, in contrast to the smartphone, which is characterized as more engaging. In addition, condition C1 stood out as more accurate and robust, while condition C2 appeared to be easier to use.

Electromagnetism is a difficult subject to learn because the phenomenon is not observed directly and does not have a perceivable, concrete image. The visualization of the phenomenon will greatly help beginners understand electromagnetics. This paper proposes an augmented-reality-based visualization system of the magnetic flux density around current-generating objects. The system can be realized with a portable magnetic field sensor and a familiar device—a smartphone. The effectiveness of the system is verified through experiments, and our findings suggest that the system can effectively help an operator gain an intuitive understanding of the magnetic flux density.

Systems that use automatic speech recognition in industry are becoming more and more popular. They bring benefits especially in cases when the user’s hands are often busy or the environment does not allow the use of a keyboard. However, the accuracy of algorithms is still a big challenge. The article describes the attempt to use ASR in the underground mining industry as an improvement in the records of work in the heavy machinery chamber by a foreman. Particular attention was paid to the factors that in this case will have a negative impact on speech recognition: the influence of the environment, specialized mining vocabulary, and the learning curve. First, the foreman’s workflow and documentation were recognized. This allowed for the selection of functionalities that should be included in the application. A dictionary of specialized mining vocabulary and a source database were developed which, in combination with the string matching algorithms, aim to improve correct speech recognition. Text mining analysis, machine learning methods were used to create functionalities that provide assistance in registering information. Finally, the prototype of the application was tested in the mining environment and the accuracy of the results were presented.

Adaptive systems and Augmented Reality are among the most promising technologies in teaching and learning processes, as they can be an effective tool for training engineering students’ spatial skills. Prior work has investigated the integration of AR technology in engineering education, and more specifically, in spatial ability training. However, the modeling of user knowledge in order to personalize the training has been neither sufficiently explored nor exploited in this task. There is a lot of space for research in this area. In this work, we introduce a novel personalization of the learning path within an AR spatial ability training application. The aim of the research is the integration of Augmented Reality, specifically in engineering evaluation and fuzzy logic technology. During one academic semester, three engineering undergraduate courses related to the domain of spatial skills were supported by a developed adaptive training system named PARSAT. Using the technology of fuzzy weights in a rule-based decision-making module and the learning theory of the Structure of the Observed Learning Outcomes for the design of the learning material, PARSAT offers adaptive learning activities for the students’ cognitive skills. Students’ data were gathered at the end of the academic semester, and a thorough analysis was delivered. The findings demonstrated that the proposed training method outperformed the traditional method that lacked adaptability, in terms of domain expertise and learning theories, considerably enhancing student learning outcomes.

For the interacting with real world, augmented reality devices need lightweight yet reliable methods for recognition and identification of physical objects. In that regard, promising possibilities are offered by supporting computer vision with 2D barcode tags. These tags, as high contrast and visually well-defined objects, can be used for finding fiducial points in the space or to identify physical items. Currently, QR code readers have certain demands towards the size and visibility of the codes. However, the increase of resolution of built-in cameras makes it possible to identify smaller QR codes in the scene. On the other hand, growing resolutions cause the increase to the computational effort of tag location. Therefore, resolution reduction in decoders is a common trade-off between processing time and recognition capabilities. In this article, we propose the simulation method of QR codes scanning near limits that stem from Shannon’s theorem. We analyze the efficiency of three publicly available decoders versus different size-to-sampling ratios (scales) and MTF characteristics of the image capture subsystem. The MTF we used is based on the characteristics of real devices, and it was modeled using Gaussian low-pass filtering. We tested two tasks—decoding and locating-and-decoding. The findings of the work are several-fold. Among others, we identified that, for practical decoding, the QR-code module should be no smaller than 3–3.5 pixels, regardless of MTF characteristics. We confirmed the superiority of Zbar in practical tasks and the worst recognition capabilities of OpenCV. On the other hand, we identified that, for borderline cases, or even below Nyquist limit where the other decoders fail, OpenCV is still capable of decoding some information.

Surgical simulation practices have witnessed a rapid expansion as an invaluable approach to resident training in recent years. One emerging way of implementing simulation is the adoption of extended reality (XR) technologies, which enable trainees to hone their skills by allowing interaction with virtual 3D objects placed in either real-world imagery or virtual environments. The goal of the present systematic review is to survey and broach the topic of XR in neurosurgery, with a focus on education. Five databases were investigated, leading to the inclusion of 31 studies after a thorough reviewing process. Focusing on user performance (UP) and user experience (UX), the body of evidence provided by these 31 studies showed that this technology has, in fact, the potential of enhancing neurosurgical education through the use of a wide array of both objective and subjective metrics. Recent research on the topic has so far produced solid results, particularly showing improvements in young residents, compared to other groups and over time. In conclusion, this review not only aids to a better understanding of the use of XR in neurosurgical education, but also highlights the areas where further research is entailed while also providing valuable insight into future applications.

As lightweight, low-cost EEG headsets emerge, the feasibility of consumer-oriented brain–computer interfaces (BCI) increases. The combination of portable smartphones and easy-to-use EEG dry electrode headbands offers intriguing new applications and methods of human–computer interaction. In previous research, augmented reality (AR) scenarios have been identified to profit from additional user state information—such as that provided by a BCI. In this work, we implemented a system that integrates user attentional state awareness into a smartphone application for an AR written language translator. The attentional state of the user is classified in terms of internally and externally directed attention by using the Muse 2 electroencephalography headband with four frontal electrodes. The classification results are used to adapt the behavior of the translation app, which uses the smartphone’s camera to display translated text as augmented reality elements. We present the first mobile BCI system that uses a smartphone and a low-cost EEG device with few electrodes to provide attention awareness to an AR application. Our case study with 12 participants did not fully support the assumption that the BCI improves usability. However, we are able to show that the classification accuracy and ease of setup are promising paths toward mobile consumer-oriented BCI usage. For future studies, other use cases, applications, and adaptations will be tested for this setup to explore the usability.
