The purpose of this paper is to present a newly developed process for the fabrication of multilayer circuits based on the pad-printing technique. Even though the maturity level, in terms of accuracy, substrate type and print size of several printing industrial processes is relatively high, the fabrication complexity of multilayer printed electronics remains relatively high. Due to its versatility, the pad-printing technique allows the superposition of printed conductive and insulating layers. Compared to other printing processes, its main advantage is the ability to print on various substrates even on flexible, curved or irregular surfaces. Silver-based inks were used for the formulation of conductive layers while UV inks were employed to fulfil the functionality of the insulating layers. To demonstrate the functionality of the pad-printing results, a multilayer test pattern has been designed and printed on Kapton®. Furthermore, to demonstrate the efficacy of this approach, a multilayer circuit composed of three stacked layers has been designed and printed on various substrates including Kapton®, paper and wood. This electronic circuit controls an array of LEDs through the manipulation of a two-key capacitive touch sensor. This study, allowed us to define recommendations for the different parameters leading to high printing quality. We expect a long-term beneficial impact of this study towards a low-cost, fast, and environmental-friendly production of printed electronics.

Smart sensors are an integral part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and are widely used to add safety measures to human–robot interaction applications. With the advancement of machine learning methods in resource-constrained environments, smart sensor systems have become increasingly powerful. As more data-driven approaches are deployed on the sensors, it is of growing importance to monitor data quality at all times of system operation. We introduce a smart capacitive sensor system with an embedded data quality monitoring algorithm to enhance the safety of human–robot interaction scenarios. The smart capacitive skin sensor is capable of detecting the distance and angle of objects nearby by utilizing consumer-grade sensor electronics. To further acknowledge the safety aspect of the sensor, a dedicated layer to monitor data quality in real-time is added to the embedded software of the sensor. Two learning algorithms are used to implement the sensor functionality: (1) a fully connected neural network to infer the position and angle of objects nearby and (2) a one-class SVM to account for the data quality assessment based on out-of-distribution detection. We show that the sensor performs well under normal operating conditions within a range of 200 mm and also detects abnormal operating conditions in terms of poor data quality successfully. A mean absolute distance error of 11.6mm was achieved without data quality indication. The overall performance of the sensor system could be further improved to 7.5mm by monitoring the data quality, adding an additional layer of safety for human–robot interaction.

The on-chip integration of multiple biochemical sensors based on field-effect electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor capacitors (EISCAP) is challenging due to technological difficulties in realization of electrically isolated EISCAPs on the same Si chip. In this work, we present a new simple design for an array of on-chip integrated, individually electrically addressable EISCAPs with an additional control gate (CG-EISCAP). The existence of the CG enables an addressable activation or deactivation of on-chip integrated individual CG-EISCAPs by simple electrical switching the CG of each sensor in various setups, and makes the new design capable for multianalyte detection without cross-talk effects between the sensors in the array. The new designed CG-EISCAP chip was modelled in so-called floating/short-circuited and floating/capacitively-coupled setups, and the corresponding electrical equivalent circuits were developed. In addition, the capacitance-voltage curves of the CG-EISCAP chip in different setups were simulated and compared with that of a single EISCAP sensor. Moreover, the sensitivity of the CG-EISCAP chip to surface potential changes induced by biochemical reactions was simulated and an impact of different parameters, such as gate voltage, insulator thickness and doping concentration in Si, on the sensitivity has been discussed.

A sensitive and efficient method for microRNAs (miRNAs) detection is strongly desired by clinicians and, in recent years, the search for such a method has drawn much attention. There has been significant interest in using miRNA as biomarkers for multiple diseases and conditions in clinical diagnostics. Presently, most miRNA detection methods suffer from drawbacks, e.g., low sensitivity, long assay time, expensive equipment, trained personnel, or unsuitability for point-of-care. New methodologies are needed to overcome these limitations to allow rapid, sensitive, low-cost, easy-to-use, and portable methods for miRNA detection at the point of care. In this work, to overcome these shortcomings, we integrated capacitive sensing and alternating current electrokinetic effects to detect specific miRNA-16b molecules, as a model, with the limit of detection reaching 1.0 femto molar (fM) levels. The specificity of the sensor was verified by testing miRNA-25, which has the same length as miRNA-16b. The sensor we developed demonstrated significant improvements in sensitivity, response time and cost over other miRNA detection methods, and has application potential at point-of-care.

This study presents a noncontact electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement system to replace conventional ECG electrode pads during ECG measurement. The proposed noncontact electrode design comprises a surface guard ring, the optimal input resistance, a ground guard ring, and an optimal voltage divider feedback. The surface and ground guard rings are used to reduce environmental noise. The optimal input resistor mitigates distortion caused by the input bias current, and the optimal voltage divider feedback increases the gain. Simulated gain analysis was subsequently performed to determine the most suitable parameters for the design, and the system was combined with a capacitive driven right leg circuit to reduce common-mode interference. The present study simulated actual environments in which interference is present in capacitive ECG signal measurement. Both in the case of environmental interference and motion artifact interference, relative to capacitive ECG electrodes, the proposed electrodes measured ECG signals with greater stability. In terms of R–R intervals, the measured ECG signals exhibited a 98.6% similarity to ECGs measured using contact ECG systems. The proposed noncontact ECG measurement system based on capacitive sensing is applicable for use in everyday life.

In the field of robotics, sensors are crucial in enabling the interaction between robots and their users. To ensure this interaction, sensors mainly measure the user’s strength, and based on this, wearable robots are controlled. In this paper, we propose a novel three-axis force/torque sensor for wearable robots that is compact and has a high load capacity. The bolt and nut combination of the proposed sensor is designed to measure high-load weights, and the simple structure of this combination allows the sensor to be compact and light. Additionally, to measure the three-axis force/torque, we design three capacitance-sensing cells. These cells are arranged in parallel to measure the difference in capacitance between the positive and negative electrodes. From the capacitance change measured by these sensing cells, force/torque information is converted through deep neural network calibration. The sensing point can also be confirmed using the geometric and kinematic relation of the sensor. The proposed sensor is manufactured through a simple and inexpensive process using cheap and simply structured components. The performance of the sensor, such as its repeatability and capacity, is evaluated using several experimental setups. In addition, the sensor is applied to a wearable robot to measure the force of an artificial muscle.

The use of capacitive dividers (CDs) in medium-voltage (MV) networks started as simple voltage detectors and as rough voltage measurement instruments for protective purposes. Now, with the spread of intelligent electronic devices and renewable energy sources at the distribution level, capacitive dividers are designed and installed to perform accurate voltage measurements. Such a requirement is mandatory when the power quality has to be assessed. Therefore, CDs are currently being used either for power frequency or for high-frequency (supraharmonic- or partial-discharge-level) measurements. In this paper, typical off-the-shelf CDs are studied and modeled to understand how they behave in a wide range of frequencies and when the temperature varies. To this purpose, specific setups and tests have been developed and performed. From the results, it is clear that with proper modeling of CDs, it is possible to exploit them for measuring phenomena in a wide range of frequencies, including the effects due to temperature variations and self-resonances.

A novel capacitive humidity sensor based on carbon black/polyimide composites is presented in this paper. The details of the fabrication, sensor characteristics, and effect of the carbon black additive are described. It was confirmed that the polyimide composite filled with a tiny amount of carbon black was suitable for a humidity sensing dielectric. The humidity sensors with three different dielectrics, which were pure polyimide, 0.01 wt% carbon black/polyimide, and 0.05 wt% carbon black/polyimide, were fabricated by a micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) process. As the amount of the carbon black additive increased, the sensitivity of the humidity sensor increased. The humidity sensor with 0.05 wt% of carbon black had a much higher sensitivity of 15.21% (20–80% RH, 0.2535%/% RH) than that of the sensor with pure polyimide, which was 9.73% (0.1622%/% RH). The addition of carbon black also led to an enhancement in the hysteresis and response speed. The hysteresis of the humidity sensor decreased from 2.17 to 1.80% when increasing the amount of the carbon black additive. The response speed of the humidity sensor with 0.05 wt% of carbon black was measured to be ~10% faster than that of the sensor with pure polyimide. The long-term stability of the humidity sensors was demonstrated as well.

Porous polymer dielectric materials have been developed to increase the sensitivity of capacitive pressure sensors, so that they might expand capacitive sensor use, and promote the realization of the advantages of this class of sensor in further fields. However, their use has not been demonstrated in physiological monitoring applications such as respiration monitoring and body position detection during sleep, an area in need of unmet medical attention for conditions such as sleep apnea. Here, we develop and characterize a sensor comprised of a poly dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge dielectric layer, and PDMS/carbon black (CB) blend electrode layers, with suitable compliance and sensitivity for integration in mattresses, pillows, and athletic shoe insoles. With relatively high pressure sensitivity (~0.1 kPa−1) and mechanical robustness, this sensor was able to fulfill a wide variety of roles, including athletic monitoring in an impact mechanics scenario, by recording heel pressure during running and walking, and physiological monitoring, by detecting head position and respiration of a subject lying on a pad and pillow. The sensor detected considerably greater relative signal changes than those reported in recent capacitive sensor studies for heel pressure, and for a comparably minimal, resistive sensor during respiration, in line with its enhanced sensitivity.

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are associated with nocturnal cough and changes in heart rate. In this work, the authors propose a proof-of-concept non-contact system for performing capacitive electrocardiogram (cECG) and cough-associated capacitive electromyogram (cEMG) measurements using cloth electrodes under a pillowcase. Two electrodes were located along with the approximate vector of lead II ECG and were used for both cECG and cEMG measurements. A signature voltage follower was introduced after each electrode to detect biopotentials with amplitudes of approximately 100 µV. A bootstrapping technique and nonlinear electrical component were combined and implemented in the voltage follower to attain a high input impedance and rapid static discharge. The measurement system was evaluated in a laboratory experiment for seven adult males and one female (average age: 22.5 ± 1.3 yr). The accuracy of R-wave detection for 2-min resting periods was 100% in six subjects, with an overall average of 87.5% ± 30.0%. Clearly visible cEMGs were obtained for each cough motion for all subjects, synchronized with reference EMGs from submental muscle. Although there remains room for improvement in practical use, the proposed system is promising for unobtrusive detection of heart rate and cough over a prolonged period of time.

Textile-based pressure sensors have garnered considerable interest in electronic textiles due to their diverse applications, including human–machine interface and healthcare monitoring systems. We studied a textile-based capacitive pressure sensor array using a poly(vinylidene fluoride)-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP)/ionic liquid (IL) composite film. By constructing a capacitor structure with Ag-plated conductive fiber electrodes that are embedded in fabrics, a capacitive pressure sensor showing high sensitivity, good operation stability, and a wide sensing range could be created. By optimizing the PVDF-HFP:IL ratio (6.5:3.5), the fabricated textile pressure sensors showed sensitivity of 9.51 kPa−1 and 0.69 kPa−1 in the pressure ranges of 0–20 kPa and 20–100 kPa, respectively. The pressure-dependent capacitance variation in our device was explained based on the change in the contact-area formed between the multi-filament fiber electrodes and the PVDF-HFP/IL film. To demonstrate the applicability and scalability of the sensor device, a 3 × 3 pressure sensor array was fabricated. Due to its matrix-type array structure and capacitive sensing mechanism, multi-point detection was possible, and the different positions and the weights of the objects could be identified.

A high end-fire gain, low-profile surface wave antenna with capacitive feed structure is presented in this paper. The proposed dielectric-metal surface wave antenna is composed of a dielectric slab that is mounted on a metal carrier and a low-profile feed structure. The feed structure is composed of a monopole radiation pin that is loaded with a circular metal plate and a grounding pin. The profile height of the antenna is only one-tenth of the operating wavelength. With a good end-fire performance and low profile, the antenna is very suitable to be conformally mounted on the surface of flight vehicles. The proposed antenna was designed and manufactured at the center frequency of 6 GHz. Measured results demonstrated that the proposed antenna had a bandwidth of 7.33%, ranging from 5.89 to 6.33 GHz, and the antenna reached a high gain of 9.76 dBi with a length of 122.96 mm (2.45 λ) in the end-fire direction.

In this study, we propose a new short-time impedance spectroscopy method with the following three features: (1) A frequency spectrum of complex impedance for the measured object can be obtained even when the measuring electrodes are capacitively coupled with the object and the precise capacitance of the coupling is unknown, (2) the spectrum can be obtained from only one cycle of the non-sinusoidal oscillation waveform without sweeping the oscillation frequency, and (3) a front-end measuring circuit can be built, simply and cheaply, without the need for a digital-to-analog (D-A) converter to synthesize elaborate waveforms comprising multiple frequencies. We built the measurement circuit using the proposed method and then measured the complex impedance spectra of 18 resistive elements connected in series with one of three respective capacitive couplings. With this method, each element&rsquo, s resistance and each coupling&rsquo, s capacitance were estimated independently and compared with their nominal values. When the coupling capacitance was set to 10 nF or 1.0 nF, estimated errors for the resistive elements in the range of 2.0&ndash, 10.0 k&Omega, were less than 5%.

Miniaturized capacitive microphones often show sensitivity degradation in the low-frequency region due to electrical and acoustical time constants. For low-frequency sound detection, conventional systems use a microphone with a large diaphragm and a large back chamber to increase the time constant. In order to overcome this limitation, an electret gate on a field-effect transistor (ElGoFET) structure was proposed, which is the field-effect transistor (FET) mounted diaphragm faced on electret. The use of the sensing mechanism consisting of the integrated FET and electret enables the direct detection of diaphragm displacement, which leads its acoustic senor application (ElGoFET microphone) and has a strong ability to detect low-frequency sound. We studied a theoretical model and design for low-frequency operation of the ElGoFET microphone prototype. Experimental investigations pertaining to the design, fabrication, and acoustic measurement of the microphone were performed and the results were compared to our analytical predictions. The feasibility of the microphone as a low-frequency micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) microphone, without the need for a direct current bias voltage (which is of particular interest for applications requiring miniaturized components), was demonstrated by the flat-band frequency response in the low-frequency region.

Traditional capacitive electrocardiogram (cECG) electrodes suffer from limited patient comfort, difficulty of disinfection and low signal-to-noise ratio in addition to the challenge of integrating them in wearables. A novel hybrid flexible cECG electrode was developed that offers high versatility in the integration method, is well suited for large-scale manufacturing, is easy to disinfect in clinical settings and exhibits better performance over a comparable rigid contactless electrode. The novel flexible electrode meets the frequency requirement for clinically important QRS complex detection (0.67–5 Hz) and its performance is improved over rigid contactless electrode across all measured metrics as it maintains lower cut-off frequency, higher source capacitance and higher pass-band gain when characterized over a wide spectrum of patient morphologies. The results presented in this article suggest that the novel flexible electrode could be used in a medical device for cECG acquisition and medical diagnosis. The novel design proves also to be less sensitive to motion than a reference rigid electrode. We therefore anticipate it can represent an important step towards improving the repeatability of cECG methods while requiring less post-processing. This would help making cECG a viable method for remote cardiac health monitoring.

It is demonstrated that the heart-rate can be sensed capacitively on a touch screen panel (TSP) together with touch signals. The existing heart-rate sensing systems measure blood pulses by tracing the amount of light reflected from blood vessels during a number of cardiac cycles. This type of sensing system requires a considerable amount of power and space to be implemented in multi-functional mobile devices such as smart phones. It is found that the variation of the effective dielectric constant of finger stemming from the difference of systolic and diastolic blood flows can be measured with laterally interspaced top electrodes of TSP. The spacing between a pair of non-adjacent top electrodes turns out to be wide enough to distinguish heart-rate signals from noises. With the aid of fast Fourier transform, the heart-rate can be extracted reliably, which matches with the one obtained by actually counting heart beats on the wrist.

The rapid development and wide application of the IoT (Internet of Things) has pushed toward the improvement of current practices in greenhouse technology and agriculture in general, through automation and informatization. The experimental and accurate determination of soil moisture is a matter of great importance in different scientific fields, such as agronomy, soil physics, geology, hydraulics, and soil mechanics. This paper focuses on the experimental characterization of a commercial low-cost &ldquo, capacitive&rdquo, coplanar soil moisture sensor that can be housed in distributed nodes for IoT applications. It is shown that at least for a well-defined type of soil with a constant solid matter to volume ratio, this type of capacitive sensor yields a reliable relationship between output voltage and gravimetric water content.

Ultra-sensitive inertial sensors are one of the key components in satellite Earth&rsquo, s gravity field recovery missions and space gravitational wave detection missions. Low-noise capacitive position transducers are crucial to these missions to achieve the scientific goal. However, in actual engineering applications, the sensor head and electronics unit usually place separately in the satellite platform where a connecting cable is needed. In this paper, we focus on the stray-capacitance influences of coaxial cables which are used to connect the mechanical core and the electronics. Specially, for the capacitive transducer with a differential transformer bridge structure usually used in high-precision space inertial sensors, a connecting method of a coaxial cable between the transformer&rsquo, s secondary winding and front-end circuit&rsquo, s preamplifier is proposed to transmit the AC modulated analog voltage signal. The measurement and noise models including the stray-capacitance of the coaxial cable under this configuration is analyzed. A prototype system is set up to investigate the influences of the cables experimentally. Three different types and lengths of coaxial cables are chosen in our experiments to compare their performances. The analysis shows that the stray-capacitance will alter the circuit&rsquo, s resonant frequency which could be adjusted by additional tuning capacitance, then under the optimal resonant condition, the output voltage noises of the preamplifier are measured and the sensitivity coefficients are also calibrated. Meanwhile, the stray-capacitance of the cables is estimated. Finally, the experimental results show that the noise level of this circuit with the selected cables could all achieve 1-2 &times, 10&minus, 7 pF/Hz1/2 at 0.1 Hz.

For wearable capacitive electrocardiogram (ECG) acquisition, capacitive electrodes may cause severe motion artifacts due to the relatively large friction between the electrodes and the dielectrics. In some studies, water can effectively suppress motion artifacts, but these studies lack a complete analysis of how water can suppress motion artifacts. In this paper, the effect of water on charge decay of textile electrode is studied systematically, and an electrode controllable humidification design using ultrasonic atomization is proposed to suppress motion artifacts. Compared with the existing electrode humidification designs, the proposed electrode humidification design can be controlled by a program to suppress motion artifacts at different ambient humidity, and can be highly integrated for wearable application. Firstly, the charge decay mode of the textile electrode is given and it is found that the process of free water evaporation at an appropriate free water content can be the dominant way of triboelectric charge dissipation. Secondly, theoretical analysis and experiment verification both illustrate that water contained in electrodes can accelerate the decay of triboelectric charge through the free water evaporation path. Finally, a capacitive electrode controllable humidification design is proposed by applying integrated ultrasonic atomization to generate atomized drops and spray them onto textile electrodes to accelerate the decay of triboelectric charge and suppress motion artifacts. The performance of the proposed design is verified by the experiment results, which shows that the proposed design can effectively suppress motion artifacts and maintain the stability of signal quality at both low and high ambient humidity. The signal-to-noise ratio of the proposed design is 33.32 dB higher than that of the non-humidified design at 25% relative humidity and is 22.67 dB higher than that of non-humidified electrodes at 65% relative humidity.

This review paper discusses the advances of the gravimetric detection devices based on capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers structure. Principles of gravimetric operation and device modeling are reviewed through the presentation of an analytical, one-dimensional model and finite element modeling. Additionally, the most common fabrication techniques, including sacrificial release and wafer bonding, are discussed for advantages for gravimetric sensing. As functional materials are the most important part of the selective gravimetric sensing, the review of different functional material properties and coating and application methods is necessary. Particularly, absorption and desorption mechanisms of functional materials, like methylated polyethyleneimine, with examples of applications for gas sensing and using immune complexes for specific biomolecules detection are reviewed.

The traditional method of using electric field sensors to realize early warning of electric power safety distance cannot measure the distance of dangerous sources. Therefore, aiming at the electric field with a frequency of 50 to 60Hz (AC electric field), a new method for localization of aerial AC target by the capacitive one-dimensional spherical electric field sensor circular array is studied. This method can directly calculate the distance, elevation, and azimuth of the detector from the dangerous source. By combining the measurement principle of the spherical electric field sensor and the plane circular array theory, a mathematical model for the localization of aerial targets in an AC electric field is established. An error model was established using Gaussian noise and the effects of different layout parameters on the localization error were simulated. Based on mutual interference between sensors, minimum induced charge, and localization error, an optimal model for sensor layout was established, and it was solved by using genetic algorithms. The optimization results show that when the number of sensors is 4, the array radius is 20 cm, and the sensor radius is 1.5 cm, the ranging error is 8.4%. The detector was developed based on the layout parameters obtained from the optimization results, and the localization method was experimentally verified at 10 and 35 kV alarm distances. The experimental results show that when the detector is located at 10 kV alarm distance, the distance error is 0.18 m, the elevation error is 6.8&deg, and the azimuth error is 4.57&deg, and when it is located at 35 kV alarm distance, the distance error is 0.2 m, the elevation error is 4.8&deg, and the azimuth error is 5.14&deg, which meets the safety distance warning requirements of 10 and 35 kV voltage levels.

This paper presents an analog front-end transceiver for an ultrasound imaging system based on a high-voltage (HV) transmitter, a low-noise front-end amplifier (RX), and a complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor, aluminum nitride, piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMOS-AlN-PMUT). The system was designed using the 0.13-&mu, m Silterra CMOS process and the MEMS-on-CMOS platform, which allowed for the implementation of an AlN PMUT on top of the CMOS-integrated circuit. The HV transmitter drives a column of six 80-&mu, m-square PMUTs excited with 32 V in order to generate enough acoustic pressure at a 2.1-mm axial distance. On the reception side, another six 80-&mu, m-square PMUT columns convert the received echo into an electric charge that is amplified by the receiver front-end amplifier. A comparative analysis between a voltage front-end amplifier (VA) based on capacitive integration and a charge-sensitive front-end amplifier (CSA) is presented. Electrical and acoustic experiments successfully demonstrated the functionality of the designed low-power analog front-end circuitry, which outperformed a state-of-the art front-end application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) in terms of power consumption, noise performance, and area.

In the present scenario, a considerable assiduity is provided to develop novel human-machine interface technologies that rapidly outpace the capabilities of display technology in automotive industries. It is necessary to use a new cockpit design in conjunction with a fully automated driving environment in order to enhance the driving experience. It can create a seamless and futuristic dashboard for automotive infotainment application. In the present study, an endeavor was made to equip the In-vehicle bezels with printed capacitive sensors for providing superior sensing capabilities. Silver Nanoparticles based interdigitated pattern electrodes were formed over polycarbonate substrates to make printed capacitive sensors using screen printing process. The developed sensor was investigated to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative measures using direct and in-direct contact of touch. The proposed approach for sensors pattern and fabrication can highly impact on sensor performance in automotive infotainment application due to the excellent spatial interpolation with lower cost, light weight, and mechanical flexibility.

After millions of years of evolution, biological chemical sensing systems (i.e., olfactory and taste systems) have become very powerful natural systems which show extreme high performances in detecting and discriminating various chemical substances. Creating field-effect sensors using biomaterials that are able to detect specific target chemical substances with high sensitivity would have broad applications in many areas, ranging from biomedicine and environments to the food industry, but this has proved extremely challenging. Over decades of intense research, field-effect sensors using biomaterials for chemical sensing have achieved significant progress and have shown promising prospects and potential applications. This review will summarize the most recent advances in the development of field-effect sensors using biomaterials for chemical sensing with an emphasis on those using functional biomaterials as sensing elements such as olfactory and taste cells and receptors. Firstly, unique principles and approaches for the development of these field-effect sensors using biomaterials will be introduced. Then, the major types of field-effect sensors using biomaterials will be presented, which includes field-effect transistor (FET), light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS), and capacitive electrolyte–insulator–semiconductor (EIS) sensors. Finally, the current limitations, main challenges and future trends of field-effect sensors using biomaterials for chemical sensing will be proposed and discussed.
