The Internet of vehicles (IoVs) is an innovative paradigm which ensures a safe journey by communicating with other vehicles. It involves a basic safety message (BSM) that contains sensitive information in a plain text that can be subverted by an adversary. To reduce such attacks, a pool of pseudonyms is allotted which are changed regularly in different zones or contexts. In base schemes, the BSM is sent to neighbors just by considering their speed. However, this parameter is not enough because network topology is very dynamic and vehicles can change their route at any time. This problem increases pseudonym consumption which ultimately increases communication overhead, increases traceability and has high BSM loss. This paper presents an efficient pseudonym consumption protocol (EPCP) which considers the vehicles in the same direction, and similar estimated location. The BSM is shared only to these relevant vehicles. The performance of the purposed scheme in contrast to base schemes is validated via extensive simulations. The results prove that the proposed EPCP technique outperformed compared to its counterparts in terms of pseudonym consumption, BSM loss rate and achieved traceability.

Location-based services (LBS) are widely used due to the rapid development of mobile devices and location technology. Users usually provide precise location information to LBS to access the corresponding services. However, this convenience comes with the risk of location privacy disclosure, which can infringe upon personal privacy and security. In this paper, a location privacy protection method based on differential privacy is proposed, which efficiently protects users’ locations, without degrading the performance of LBS. First, a location-clustering (L-clustering) algorithm is proposed to divide the continuous locations into different clusters based on the distance and density relationships among multiple groups. Then, a differential privacy-based location privacy protection algorithm (DPLPA) is proposed to protect users’ location privacy, where Laplace noise is added to the resident points and centroids within the cluster. The experimental results show that the DPLPA achieves a high level of data utility, with minimal time consumption, while effectively protecting the privacy of location information.

Bridges are vital components of transport infrastructures, and therefore, it is of utmost importance that they operate safely and reliably. This paper proposes and tests a methodology for detecting and localizing damage in bridges under both traffic and environmental variability considering non-stationary vehicle-bridge interaction. In detail, the current study presents an approach to temperature removal in the case of forced vibrations in the bridge using principal component analysis, with detection and localization of damage using an unsupervised machine learning algorithm. Due to the difficulty in obtaining real data on undamaged and later damaged bridges that are simultaneously influenced by traffic and temperature changes, the proposed method is validated using a numerical bridge benchmark. The vertical acceleration response is derived from a time-history analysis with a moving load under different ambient temperatures. The results show how machine learning algorithms applied to bridge damage detection appear to be a promising technique to efficiently solve the problem’s complexity when both operational and environmental variability are included in the recorded data. However, the example application still shows some limitations, such as the use of a numerical bridge and not a real bridge due to the lack of vibration data under health and damage conditions, and with varying temperatures; the simple modeling of the vehicle as a moving load; and the crossing of only one vehicle present in the bridge. This will be considered in future studies.

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is considered a challenge in environments with many moving objects. This paper proposes a novel LiDAR inertial odometry framework, LiDAR inertial odometry-based on indexed point and delayed removal strategy (ID-LIO) for dynamic scenes, which builds on LiDAR inertial odometry via smoothing and mapping (LIO-SAM). To detect the point clouds on the moving objects, a dynamic point detection method is integrated, which is based on pseudo occupancy along a spatial dimension. Then, we present a dynamic point propagation and removal algorithm based on indexed points to remove more dynamic points on the local map along the temporal dimension and update the status of the point features in keyframes. In the LiDAR odometry module, a delay removal strategy is proposed for historical keyframes, and the sliding window-based optimization includes the LiDAR measurement with dynamic weights to reduce error from dynamic points in keyframes. We perform the experiments both on the public low-dynamic and high-dynamic datasets. The results show that the proposed method greatly increases localization accuracy in high-dynamic environments. Additionally, the absolute trajectory error (ATE) and average RMSE root mean square error (RMSE) of our ID-LIO can be improved by 67% and 85% in the UrbanLoco-CAMarketStreet dataset and UrbanNav-HK-Medium-Urban-1 dataset, respectively, when compared with LIO-SAM.

The distribution of wireless network systems challenges the communication security of Internet of Things (IoT), and the IPv6 protocol is gradually becoming the main communication protocol under the IoT. The Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP), as the base protocol of IPv6, includes address resolution, DAD, route redirection and other functions. The NDP protocol faces many attacks, such as DDoS attacks, MITM attacks, etc. In this paper, we focus on the communication-addressing problem between nodes in the Internet of Things (IoT). We propose a Petri-Net-based NS flooding attack model for the flooding attack problem of address resolution protocols under the NDP protocol. Through a fine-grained analysis of the Petri Net model and attacking techniques, we propose another Petri-Net-based defense model under the SDN architecture, achieving security for communications. We further simulate the normal communication between nodes in the EVE-NG simulation environment. We implement a DDoS attack on the communication protocol by an attacker who obtains the attack data through the THC-IPv6 tool. In this paper, the SVM algorithm, random forest algorithm (RF) and Bayesian algorithm (NBC) are used to process the attack data. The NBC algorithm is proven to exhibit high accuracy in classifying and identifying data through experiments. Further, the abnormal data are discarded through the abnormal data processing rules issued by the controller in the SDN architecture, to ensure the security of communications between nodes.

Vehicular communication systems can be used to enhance the safety level of road users by exchanging safety/warning messages. In this paper, an absorbing material on a button antenna is proposed for pedestrian-to-vehicle (P2V) communication, which provides safety service to road workers on the highway or in a road environment. The button antenna is small in size and is easy to carry for carriers. This antenna is fabricated and tested in an anechoic chamber; it can achieve a maximum gain of 5.5 dBi and an absorption of 92% at 7.6 GHz. The maximum distance of measurement between the absorbing material of the button antenna and the test antenna is less than 150 m. The advantage of the button antenna is that the absorption surface is used in the radiation layer of the antenna so that the antenna can improve the radiation direction and gain. The absorption unit size is 15 × 15 × 5 mm3.

We present a device- and network-based solution for automatic passnger counting that operates on the edge in real time. The proposed solution consists of a low-cost WiFi scanner device equipped with custom algorithms for dealing with MAC address randomization. Our low-cost scanner is able to capture and analyze 802.11 probe requests emitted by passengers’ devices such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets. The device is configured with a Python data-processing pipeline that combines data coming from different types of sensors and processes them on the fly. For the analysis task, we have devised a lightweight version of the DBSCAN algorithm. Our software artifact is designed in a modular way in order to accommodate possible extensions of the pipeline, e.g., either additional filters or data sources. Furthermore, we exploit multi-threading and multi-processing for speeding up the entire computation. The proposed solution has been tested with different types of mobile devices, obtaining promising experimental results. In this paper, we present the key ingredients of our edge computing solution.

The Internet of Things (IoT) plays a fundamental role in monitoring applications; however, existing approaches relying on cloud and edge-based IoT data analysis encounter issues such as network delays and high costs, which can adversely impact time-sensitive applications. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an IoT framework called Sazgar IoT. Unlike existing solutions, Sazgar IoT leverages only IoT devices and IoT data analysis approximation techniques to meet the time-bounds of time-sensitive IoT applications. In this framework, the computing resources onboard the IoT devices are utilised to process the data analysis tasks of each time-sensitive IoT application. This eliminates the network delays associated with transferring large volumes of high-velocity IoT data to cloud or edge computers. To ensure that each task meets its application-specific time-bound and accuracy requirements, we employ approximation techniques for the data analysis tasks of time-sensitive IoT applications. These techniques take into account the available computing resources and optimise the processing accordingly. To evaluate the effectiveness of Sazgar IoT, experimental validation has been conducted. The results demonstrate that the framework successfully meets the time-bound and accuracy requirements of the COVID-19 citizen compliance monitoring application by effectively utilising the available IoT devices. The experimental validation further confirms that Sazgar IoT is an efficient and scalable solution for IoT data processing, addressing existing network delay issues for time-sensitive applications and significantly reducing the cost related to cloud and edge computing devices procurement, deployment, and maintenance.

Sparse arrays are of deep concern due to their ability to identify more sources than the number of sensors, among which the hole-free difference co-array (DCA) with large degrees of freedom (DOFs) is a topic worth discussing. In this paper, we propose a novel hole-free nested array with three sub-uniform line arrays (NA-TS). The one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) representations demonstrate the detailed configuration of NA-TS, which indicates that both nested array (NA) and improved nested array (INA) are special cases of NA-TS. We subsequently derive the closed-form expressions for the optimal configuration and the available number of DOFs, concluding that the DOFs of NA-TS is a function of the number of sensors and the number of the third sub-ULA. The NA-TS possesses more DOFs than several previously proposed hole-free nested arrays. Finally, the superior direction of arrival (DOA) estimation performance based on the NA-TS is supported by numerical examples.

Smart flexible materials with piezoresistive property are increasingly used in the field of sensors. When embedded in structures, they would allow for in situ structural health monitoring and damage assessment of impact loading, such as crash, bird strikes and ballistic impacts; however, this could not be achieved without a deep characterization of the relation between piezoresistivity and mechanical behavior. The aim of this paper is to study the potential use of the piezoresistivity effect of a conductive foam made of a flexible polyurethane matrix filled with activated carbon for integrated structural health monitoring (SHM) and low-energy impact detection. To do so, polyurethane foam filled with activated carbon, namely PUF-AC, is tested under quasi-static compressions and under a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) with in situ measurements of its electrical resistance. A new relation is proposed for describing the evolution of the resistivity versus strain rate showing that a link exists between electrical sensitivity and viscoelasticity. In addition, a first demonstrative experiment of feasibility of an SHM application using piezoresistive foam embedded in a composite sandwich structure is realized by a low-energy impact (2 J) test.

This paper proposes a temperature sensor based on temperature-frequency conversion using 180 nm CMOS technology. The temperature sensor consists of a proportional-to-absolute temperature (PTAT) current generating circuit, a relaxation oscillator with oscillation frequency proportional to temperature (OSC-PTAT), a relaxation oscillator with oscillation frequency independent of temperature (OSC-CON), and a divider circuit cascaded with D flip-flops. Using BJT as the temperature sensing module, the sensor has the advantages of high accuracy and high resolution. An oscillator that uses PTAT current to charge and discharge capacitors to achieve oscillation, and utilizes voltage average feedback (VAF) to enhance the frequency stability of the oscillator is tested. Through the dual temperature sensing process with the same structure, the influence of variables such as power supply voltage, device, and process deviation can be reduced to a certain extent. The temperature sensor in this paper was implemented and tested with a temperature measurement range of 0–100 °C, an inaccuracy of +0.65 °C/−0.49 °C after two-point calibration, a resolution of 0.003 °C, a resolution Figure of Merit (FOM) of 6.7 pJ/K2, an area of 0.059 mm2, and a power consumption of 32.9 μW.

In IoT environments, voluminous amounts of data are produced every single second. Due to multiple factors, these data are prone to various imperfections, they could be uncertain, conflicting, or even incorrect leading to wrong decisions. Multisensor data fusion has proved to be powerful for managing data coming from heterogeneous sources and moving towards effective decision-making. Dempster–Shafer (D–S) theory is a robust and flexible mathematical tool for modeling and merging uncertain, imprecise, and incomplete data, and is widely used in multisensor data fusion applications such as decision-making, fault diagnosis, pattern recognition, etc. However, the combination of contradictory data has always been challenging in D–S theory, unreasonable results may arise when dealing with highly conflicting sources. In this paper, an improved evidence combination approach is proposed to represent and manage both conflict and uncertainty in IoT environments in order to improve decision-making accuracy. It mainly relies on an improved evidence distance based on Hellinger distance and Deng entropy. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a benchmark example for target recognition and two real application cases in fault diagnosis and IoT decision-making have been provided. Fusion results were compared with several similar methods, and simulation analyses have shown the superiority of the proposed method in terms of conflict management, convergence speed, fusion results reliability, and decision accuracy. In fact, our approach achieved remarkable accuracy rates of 99.32% in target recognition example, 96.14% in fault diagnosis problem, and 99.54% in IoT decision-making application.

This paper presents the development and validation of a low-cost device for real-time detection of fatigue damage of structures subjected to vibrations. The device consists of an hardware and signal processing algorithm to detect and monitor variations in the structural response due to damage accumulation. The effectiveness of the device is demonstrated through experimental validation on a simple Y-shaped specimen subjected to fatigue loading. The results show that the device can accurately detect structural damage and provide real-time feedback on the health status of the structure. The low-cost and easy-to-implement nature of the device makes it promising for use in structural health monitoring applications in various industrial sectors.

The area of military operations is a big challenge for medical support. A particularly important factor that allows medical services to react quickly in the case of mass casualties is the ability to rapidly evacuation of wounded soldiers from a battlefield. To meet this requirement, an effective medical evacuation system is essential. The paper presented the architecture of the electronically supported decision support system for medical evacuation during military operations. The system can also be used by other services such as police or fire service. The system meets the requirements for tactical combat casualty care procedures and is composed of following elements: measurement subsystem, data transmission subsystem and analysis and inference subsystem. The system, based on the continuous monitoring of selected soldiers’ vital signs and biomedical signals, automatically proposes a medical segregation of wounded soldiers (medical triage). The information on the triage was visualized using the Headquarters Management System for medical personnel (first responders, medical officers, medical evacuation groups) and for commanders, if required. All elements of the architecture were described in the paper.

A simple, equipment-free, direct fluorometric method, employing paper-based analytical devices (PADs) as sensors, for the selective determination of quinine (QN) is described herein. The suggested analytical method exploits the fluorescence emission of QN without any chemical reaction after the appropriate pH adjustment with nitric acid, at room temperature, on the surface of a paper device with the application of a UV lamp at 365 nm. The devices crafted had a low cost and were manufactured with chromatographic paper and wax barriers, and the analytical protocol followed was extremely easy for the analyst and required no laboratory instrumentation. According to the methodology, the user must place the sample on the detection area of the paper and read with a smartphone the fluorescence emitted by the QN molecules. Many chemical parameters were optimized, and a study of interfering ions present in soft drink samples was carried out. Additionally, the chemical stability of these paper devices was considered in various maintenance conditions with good results. The detection limit calculated as 3.3 S/N was 3.6 mg L−1, and the precision of the method was satisfactory, being from 3.1% (intra-day) to 8.8% (inter-day). Soft drink samples were successfully analyzed and compared with a fluorescence method.

People whose jobs involve repetitive motions of the wrist and forearm can suffer from lateral epicondylitis, which is a significant burden on both the individual and the employer due to treatment costs, reduced productivity, and work absenteeism. This paper describes an ergonomic intervention to reduce lateral epicondylitis in the workstation of a textile logistics center. The intervention includes workplace-based exercise programs, evaluation of risk factors, and movement correction. An injury- and subject-specific score was calculated from the motion captured with wearable inertial sensors at the workplace to evaluate the risk factors of 93 workers. Then, a new working movement was adapted to the workplace, which limited the observed risk factors and took into account the subject-specific physical abilities. The movement was taught to the workers during personalized sessions. The risk factors of 27 workers were evaluated again after the intervention to validate the effectiveness of the movement correction. In addition, active warm-up and stretching programs were introduced as part of the workday to promote muscle endurance and improve resistance to repetitive stress. The present strategy offered good results at low cost, without any physical modification of the workplace and without any detriment to productivity.

Autonomous navigation requires multi-sensor fusion to achieve a high level of accuracy in different environments. Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers are the main components in most navigation systems. However, GNSS signals are subject to blockage and multipath effects in challenging areas, e.g., tunnels, underground parking, and downtown or urban areas. Therefore, different sensors, such as inertial navigation systems (INSs) and radar, can be used to compensate for GNSS signal deterioration and to meet continuity requirements. In this paper, a novel algorithm was applied to improve land vehicle navigation in GNSS-challenging environments through radar/INS integration and map matching. Four radar units were utilized in this work. Two units were used to estimate the vehicle’s forward velocity, and the four units were used together to estimate the vehicle’s position. The integrated solution was estimated in two steps. First, the radar solution was fused with an INS through an extended Kalman filter (EKF). Second, map matching was used to correct the radar/INS integrated position using OpenStreetMap (OSM). The developed algorithm was evaluated using real data collected in Calgary’s urban area and downtown Toronto. The results show the efficiency of the proposed method, which had a horizontal position RMS error percentage of less than 1% of the distance traveled for three minutes of a simulated GNSS outage.

Human activity recognition (HAR) is an important research problem in computer vision. This problem is widely applied to building applications in human–machine interactions, monitoring, etc. Especially, HAR based on the human skeleton creates intuitive applications. Therefore, determining the current results of these studies is very important in selecting solutions and developing commercial products. In this paper, we perform a full survey on using deep learning to recognize human activity based on three-dimensional (3D) human skeleton data as input. Our research is based on four types of deep learning networks for activity recognition based on extracted feature vectors: Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) using extracted activity sequence features; Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) uses feature vectors extracted based on the projection of the skeleton into the image space; Graph Convolution Network (GCN) uses features extracted from the skeleton graph and the temporal–spatial function of the skeleton; Hybrid Deep Neural Network (Hybrid–DNN) uses many other types of features in combination. Our survey research is fully implemented from models, databases, metrics, and results from 2019 to March 2023, and they are presented in ascending order of time. In particular, we also carried out a comparative study on HAR based on a 3D human skeleton on the KLHA3D 102 and KLYOGA3D datasets. At the same time, we performed analysis and discussed the obtained results when applying CNN-based, GCN-based, and Hybrid–DNN-based deep learning networks.

A tunable and narrow-bandwidth Q-switched ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) laser is investigated in this paper. The non-pumped YDF acts as a saturable absorber and, together with a Sagnac loop mirror, provides a dynamic spectral-filtering grating to achieve a narrow-linewidth Q-switched output. By adjusting an etalon-based tunable fiber filter, a tunable wavelength from 1027 nm to 1033 nm is obtained. When the pump power is 1.75 W, the Q-switched laser pulses with a pulse energy of 10.45 nJ, and a repetition frequency of 11.98 kHz and spectral linewidth of 112 MHz are obtained. This work paves the way for the generation narrow-linewidth Q-switched lasers with tunable wavelengths in conventional ytterbium, erbium, and thulium fiber bands to address critical applications such as coherent detection, biomedicine, and nonlinear frequency conversion.

Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) has been widely applied in in situ and real-time monitoring of trace gas concentrations. In this paper, an advanced TDLAS-based optical gas sensing system with laser linewidth analysis and filtering/fitting algorithms is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The linewidth of the laser pulse spectrum is innovatively considered and analyzed in the harmonic detection of the TDLAS model. The adaptive Variational Mode Decomposition-Savitzky Golay (VMD-SG) filtering algorithm is developed to process the raw data and could significantly eliminate the background noise variance by about 31% and signal jitters by about 12.5%. Furthermore, the Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network is also incorporated and applied to improve the fitting accuracy of the gas sensor. Compared with traditional linear fitting or least squares method (LSM), the RBF neural network brings along the enhanced fitting accuracy within a large dynamic range, achieving an absolute error of below 50 ppmv (about 0.6%) for the maximum 8000 ppmv methane. The proposed technique in this paper is universal and compatible with TDLAS-based gas sensors without hardware modification, allowing direct improvement and optimization for current optical gas sensors.

This paper presents a BJT-based smart CMOS temperature sensor. The analog front-end circuit contains a bias circuit and a bipolar core; the data conversion interface features an incremental delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter. The circuit utilizes the chopping, correlated double sampling, and dynamic element matching techniques to mitigate the effects of process bias and nonideal device characteristics on measurement accuracy. Furthermore, based on the principle of charge conservation, the dynamic range utilization of the ADC increases. We propose a neural network that uses a multilayer convolutional perceptron to calibrate the sensor output results. Using the algorithm, the sensor achieves an inaccuracy of ±0.11 °C (3σ), exceeding the accuracy of ±0.23 °C (3σ) achieved without calibration. We implement the sensor in a 0.18 µm CMOS process, occupying an area of 0.42 mm2. It achieves a resolution of 0.01 °C and has a conversion time of 24 ms.

The application of IoT (Internet of Things) technology to the health monitoring of expansion joints is of great importance in enhancing the efficiency of bridge expansion joint maintenance. In this study, a low-power, high-efficiency, end-to-cloud coordinated monitoring system analyzes acoustic signals to identify faults in bridge expansion joints. To address the issue of scarce authentic data related to bridge expansion joint failures, an expansion joint damage simulation data collection platform is established for well-annotated datasets. Based on this, a progressive two-level classifier mechanism is proposed, combining template matching based on AMPD (Automatic Peak Detection) and deep learning algorithms based on VMD (Variational Mode Decomposition), denoising, and utilizing edge and cloud computing power efficiently. The simulation-based datasets were used to test the two-level algorithm, with the first-level edge-end template matching algorithm achieving fault detection rates of 93.3% and the second-level cloud-based deep learning algorithm achieving classification accuracy of 98.4%. The proposed system in this paper has demonstrated efficient performance in monitoring the health of expansion joints, according to the aforementioned results.

Since introducing the Transformer model, it has dramatically influenced various fields of machine learning. The field of time series prediction has also been significantly impacted, where Transformer family models have flourished, and many variants have been differentiated. These Transformer models mainly use attention mechanisms to implement feature extraction and multi-head attention mechanisms to enhance the strength of feature extraction. However, multi-head attention is essentially a simple superposition of the same attention, so they do not guarantee that the model can capture different features. Conversely, multi-head attention mechanisms may lead to much information redundancy and computational resource waste. In order to ensure that the Transformer can capture information from multiple perspectives and increase the diversity of its captured features, this paper proposes a hierarchical attention mechanism, for the first time, to improve the shortcomings of insufficient information diversity captured by the traditional multi-head attention mechanisms and the lack of information interaction among the heads. Additionally, global feature aggregation using graph networks is used to mitigate inductive bias. Finally, we conducted experiments on four benchmark datasets, and the experimental results show that the proposed model can outperform the baseline model in several metrics.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a very abundant source of data, as well as a source of many vulnerabilities. A significant challenge is preparing security solutions to protect IoT nodes’ resources and the data exchanged. The difficulty usually stems from the insufficient resources of these nodes in terms of computing power, memory size, range energy resource, and wireless link performance. The paper presents the design and demonstrator of a system for symmetric cryptographic Key Generating, Renewing, and Distributing (KGRD). The system uses the TPM 2.0 hardware module to support cryptographic procedures, including creating trust structures, key generation, and securing the node’s exchange of data and resources. Clusters of sensor nodes and traditional systems can use the KGRD system to secure data exchange in the federated cooperation of systems with IoT-derived data sources. The transmission medium for exchanging data between KGRD system nodes is the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) service, which is commonly used in IoT networks.

In real-world applications, multiple robots need to be dynamically deployed to their appropriate locations as teams while the distance cost between robots and goals is minimized, which is known to be an NP-hard problem. In this paper, a new framework of team-based multi-robot task allocation and path planning is developed for robot exploration missions through a convex optimization-based distance optimal model. A new distance optimal model is proposed to minimize the traveled distance between robots and their goals. The proposed framework fuses task decomposition, allocation, local sub-task allocation, and path planning. To begin, multiple robots are firstly divided and clustered into a variety of teams considering interrelation and dependencies of robots, and task decomposition. Secondly, the teams with various arbitrary shape enclosing intercorrelative robots are approximated and relaxed into circles, which are mathematically formulated to convex optimization problems to minimize the distance between teams, as well as between a robot and their goals. Once the robot teams are deployed into their appropriate locations, the robot locations are further refined by a graph-based Delaunay triangulation method. Thirdly, in the team, a self-organizing map-based neural network (SOMNN) paradigm is developed to complete the dynamical sub-task allocation and path planning, in which the robots are dynamically assigned to their nearby goals locally. Simulation and comparison studies demonstrate the proposed hybrid multi-robot task allocation and path planning framework is effective and efficient.

One of the main challenges in the development of a plasma diagnostic and control system for DEMO is the need to cope with unprecedented radiation levels in a tokamak during long operation periods. A list of diagnostics required for plasma control has been developed during the pre-conceptual design phase. Different approaches are proposed for the integration of these diagnostics in DEMO: in equatorial and upper ports, in the divertor cassette, on the inner and outer surfaces of the vacuum vessel and in diagnostic slim cassettes, a modular approach developed for diagnostics requiring access to the plasma from several poloidal positions. According to each integration approach, diagnostics will be exposed to different radiation levels, with a considerable impact on their design. This paper provides a broad overview of the radiation environment that diagnostics in DEMO are expected to face. Using the water-cooled lithium lead blanket configuration as a reference, neutronics simulations were performed for pre-conceptual designs of in-vessel, ex-vessel and equatorial port diagnostics representative of each integration approach. Flux and nuclear load calculations are provided for several sub-systems, along with estimations of radiation streaming to the ex-vessel for alternative design configurations. The results can be used as a reference by diagnostic designers.

The reliability of autonomous driving sensing systems impacts the overall safety of the driving system. However, perception system fault diagnosis is currently a weak area of research, with limited attention and solutions. In this paper, we present an information-fusion-based fault-diagnosis method for autonomous driving perception systems. To begin, we built an autonomous driving simulation scenario using PreScan software, which collects information from a single millimeter wave (MMW) radar and a single camera sensor. The photos are then identified and labeled via the convolutional neural network (CNN). Then, we fused the sensory inputs from a single MMW radar sensor and a single camera sensor in space and time and mapped the MMW radar points onto the camera image to obtain the region of interest (ROI). Lastly, we developed a method to use information from a single MMW radar to aid in diagnosing defects in a single camera sensor. As the simulation results show, for missing row/column pixel failure, the deviation typically falls between 34.11% and 99.84%, with a response time of 0.02 s to 1.6 s; for pixel shift faults, the deviation range is between 0.32% and 9.92%, with a response time of 0 s to 0.16 s; for target color loss, faults have a deviation range of 0.26% to 2.88% and a response time of 0 s to 0.05 s. These results prove the technology is effective in detecting sensor faults and issuing real-time fault alerts, providing a basis for designing and developing simpler and more user-friendly autonomous driving systems. Furthermore, this method illustrates the principles and methods of information fusion between camera and MMW radar sensors, establishing the foundation for creating more complicated autonomous driving systems.

As spectroscopic detection technology rapidly advances, back-illuminated InGaAs detectors with a wider spectral range have emerged. Compared to traditional detectors such as HgCdTe, CCD, and CMOS, InGaAs detectors offer a working range of 400–1800 nm and exhibit a quantum efficiency of over 60% in both the visible and near-infrared bands. This is leading to the demand for innovative designs of imaging spectrometers with wider spectral ranges. However, the widening of the spectral range has led to the presence of significant axial chromatic aberration and secondary spectrum in imaging spectrometers. Additionally, there is difficulty in aligning the system optical axis perpendicular to the detector image plane, resulting in increased challenges during post-installation adjustment. Based on chromatic aberration correction theory, this paper presents the design of a wide spectral range transmission prism-grating imaging spectrometer with a working range of 400–1750 nm using Code V. The spectral range of this spectrometer covers both the visible and near-infrared regions, which is beyond the capability of traditional PG spectrometers. In the past, the working spectral range of transmission-type PG imaging spectrometers has been limited to 400–1000 nm. This study’s proposed chromatic aberration correction process involves selecting optical glass materials that match the design requirements and correcting the axial chromatic aberration and secondary spectrum, ensuring that the system axis is perpendicular to the detector plane and easy to adjust during installation. The results show that the spectrometer has a spectral resolution of 5 nm, a root-mean-square spot diagram less than 8 μm over the full field of view, and an optical transfer function MTF greater than 0.6 at a Nyquist frequency of 30 lp/mm. The system size is less than 90 mm. Spherical lenses are employed in the system design to reduce manufacturing costs and complexity while meeting the requirements of wide spectral range, miniaturization, and easy installation.

With the gradual development of and improvement in earthquake early warning systems (EEWS), more accurate real-time seismic intensity measurements (IMs) methods are needed to assess the impact range of earthquake intensities. Although traditional point source warning systems have made some progress in terms of predicting earthquake source parameters, they are still inadequate at assessing the accuracy of IMs predictions. In this paper, we aim to explore the current state of the field by reviewing real-time seismic IMs methods. First, we analyze different views on the ultimate earthquake magnitude and rupture initiation behavior. Then, we summarize the progress of IMs predictions as they relate to regional and field warnings. The applications of finite faults and simulated seismic wave fields in IMs predictions are analyzed. Finally, the methods used to evaluate IMs are discussed in terms of the accuracy of the IMs measured by different algorithms and the cost of alerts. The trend of IMs prediction methods in real time is diversified, and the integration of various types of warning algorithms and of various configurations of seismic station equipment in an integrated earthquake warning network is an important development trend for future EEWS construction.

Fluorescence-based detection techniques are part of an ever-expanding field and are widely used in biomedical and environmental research as a biosensing tool. These techniques have high sensitivity, selectivity, and a short response time, making them a valuable tool for developing bio-chemical assays. The endpoint of these assays is defined by changes in fluorescence signal, in terms of its intensity, lifetime, and/or shift in spectrum, which is monitored using readout devices such as microscopes, fluorometers, and cytometers. However, these devices are often bulky, expensive, and require supervision to operate, which makes them inaccessible in resource-limited settings. To address these issues, significant effort has been directed towards integrating fluorescence-based assays into miniature platforms based on papers, hydrogels, and microfluidic devices, and to couple these assays with portable readout devices like smartphones and wearable optical sensors, thereby enabling point-of-care detection of bio-chemical analytes. This review highlights some of the recently developed portable fluorescence-based assays by discussing the design of fluorescent sensor molecules, their sensing strategy, and the fabrication of point-of-care devices.

Several recent studies have indicated that upper extremity injuries are classified as a top common workplace injury. Therefore, upper extremity rehabilitation has become a leading research area in the last few decades. However, this high number of upper extremity injuries is viewed as a challenging problem due to the insufficient number of physiotherapists. With the recent advancements in technology, robots have been widely involved in upper extremity rehabilitation exercises. Although robotic technology and its involvement in the rehabilitation field are rapidly evolving, the literature lacks a recent review that addresses the updates in the robotic upper extremity rehabilitation field. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art robotic upper extremity rehabilitation solutions, with a detailed classification of various rehabilitative robots. The paper also reports some experimental robotic trials and their outcomes in clinics.

The Internet of Things (IoT) uses wireless networks without infrastructure to install a huge number of wireless sensors that track system, physical, and environmental factors. There are a variety of WSN uses, and some well-known application factors include energy consumption and lifespan duration for routing purposes. The sensors have detecting, processing, and communication capabilities. In this paper, an intelligent healthcare system is proposed which consists of nano sensors that collect real-time health status and transfer it to the doctor’s server. Time consumption and various attacks are major concerns, and some existing techniques contain stumbling blocks. Therefore, in this research, a genetic-based encryption method is advocated to protect data transmitted over a wireless channel using sensors to avoid an uncomfortable data transmission environment. An authentication procedure is also proposed for legitimate users to access the data channel. Results show that the proposed algorithm is lightweight and energy efficient, and time consumption is 90% lower with a higher security ratio.

This paper presents a novel approach for counting hand-performed activities using deep learning and inertial measurement units (IMUs). The particular challenge in this task is finding the correct window size for capturing activities with different durations. Traditionally, fixed window sizes have been used, which occasionally result in incorrectly represented activities. To address this limitation, we propose segmenting the time series data into variable-length sequences using ragged tensors to store and process the data. Additionally, our approach utilizes weakly labeled data to simplify the annotation process and reduce the time to prepare annotated data for machine learning algorithms. Thus, the model receives only partial information about the performed activity. Therefore, we propose an LSTM-based architecture, which takes into account both the ragged tensors and the weak labels. To the best of our knowledge, no prior studies attempted counting utilizing variable-size IMU acceleration data with relatively low computational requirements using the number of completed repetitions of hand-performed activities as a label. Hence, we present the data segmentation method we employed and the model architecture that we implemented to show the effectiveness of our approach. Our results are evaluated using the Skoda public dataset for Human activity recognition (HAR) and demonstrate a repetition error of ±1 even in the most challenging cases. The findings of this study have applications and can be beneficial for various fields, including healthcare, sports and fitness, human–computer interaction, robotics, and the manufacturing industry. With the rapid development of sensor technology, structural health monitoring data have tended to become more massive. Deep learning has advantages when handling big data, and has therefore been widely researched for diagnosing structural anomalies. However, for the diagnosis of different structural abnormalities, the model hyperparameters need to be adjusted according to different application scenarios, which is a complicated process. In this paper, a new strategy for building and optimizing 1D-CNN models is proposed that is suitable for diagnosing damage to different types of structure. This strategy involves optimizing hyperparameters with the Bayesian algorithm and improving model recognition accuracy using data fusion technology. Under the condition of sparse sensor measurement points, the entire structure is monitored, and the high-precision diagnosis of structural damage is performed. This method improves the applicability of the model to different structure detection scenarios, and avoids the shortcomings of traditional hyperparameter adjustment methods based on experience and subjectivity. In preliminary research on the simply supported beam test case, the efficient and accurate identification of parameter changes in small local elements was achieved. Furthermore, publicly available structural datasets were utilized to verify the robustness of the method, and a high identification accuracy rate of 99.85% was achieved. Compared with other methods described in the literature, this strategy shows significant advantages in terms of sensor occupancy rate, computational cost, and identification accuracy.

The safety of an operator working in a hazardous environment is a recurring topic in the technical literature of recent years, especially for high-risk environments such as oil and gas plants, refineries, gas depots, or chemical industries. One of the highest risk factors is constituted by the presence of gaseous substances such as toxic compounds such as carbon monoxide and nitric oxides, particulate matter or indoors, in closed spaces, low oxygen concentration atmospheres, and high concentrations of CO2 that can represent a risk for human health. In this context, there exist many monitoring systems for lots of specific applications where gas detection is required. In this paper, the authors present a distributed sensing system based on commercial sensors aimed at monitoring the presence of toxic compounds generated by a melting furnace with the aim of reliably detecting the insurgence of dangerous conditions for workers. The system is composed of two different sensor nodes and a gas analyzer, and it exploits commercial low-cost commercially available sensors.

Disaster monitoring is a primary task for wireless sensor networks. Systems for the rapid reporting of earthquake information are a crucial aspect of disaster monitoring. Furthermore, during emergency rescue after a large earthquake, wireless sensor networks can provide pictures and sound information to save lives. Therefore, when accompanied by multimedia data flow, the alert and seismic data sent by the seismic monitoring nodes must be sufficiently fast. We present herein the architecture of a collaborative disaster-monitoring system that can obtain seismic data in a highly energy-efficient manner. In this paper, a hybrid superior node token ring MAC scheme is proposed for disaster monitoring in wireless sensor networks. This scheme consists of set-up and steady-state stages. A clustering approach was proposed for heterogeneous networks during the set-up stage. The proposed MAC operates in the duty cycle mode at the steady-state stage and is based on the virtual token ring of ordinary nodes, the polling all the superior nodes in one period, and alert transmissions with a low-power listening and shortened preamble approach during the sleep state. The proposed scheme can simultaneously satisfy the requirements of three types of data in disaster-monitoring applications. Based on embedded Markov chains, a model of the proposed MAC was developed and the mean queue length, mean cycle time, and mean upper bound of the frame delay were obtained. Using simulations under various conditions, the clustering approach performed better than the pLEACH approach, and the theoretical results of the proposed MAC were verified. We found that alerts and superior data have outstanding delay and throughput performances even under heavy traffic intensity, and the proposed MAC can provide a data rate of several hundred kb/s for superior and ordinary data. Considering all three types of data, the frame delay performances of the proposed MAC are better than those of the WirelessHART and DRX schemes, and the alert data of the proposed MAC have a maximum frame delay of 15 ms. These satisfy the application requirements of disaster monitoring.

The global expansion of the Visual Internet of Things (VIoT)’s deployment with multiple devices and sensor interconnections has been widespread. Frame collusion and buffering delays are the primary artifacts in the broad area of VIoT networking applications due to significant packet loss and network congestion. Numerous studies have been carried out on the impact of packet loss on Quality of Experience (QoE) for a wide range of applications. In this paper, a lossy video transmission framework for the VIoT considering the KNN classifier merged with the H.265 protocols. The performance of the proposed framework was assessed while considering the congestion of encrypted static images transmitted to the wireless sensor networks. The performance analysis of the proposed KNN-H.265 protocol is compared with the existing traditional H.265 and H.264 protocols. The analysis suggests that the traditional H.264 and H.265 protocols cause video conversation packet drops. The performance of the proposed protocol is estimated with the parameters of frame number, delay, throughput, packet loss ratio, and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) on MATLAB 2018a simulation software. The proposed model gives 4% and 6% better PSNR values than the existing two methods and better throughput.

Rock climbing has evolved from a method for alpine mountaineering into a popular recreational activity and competitive sport. Advances in safety equipment and the rapid growth of indoor climbing facilities has enabled climbers to focus on the physical and technical movements needed to elevate performance. Through improved training methods, climbers can now achieve ascents of extreme difficulty. A critical aspect to further improve performance is the ability to continuously measure body movement and physiologic responses while ascending the climbing wall. However, traditional measurement devices (e.g., dynamometer) limit data collection during climbing. Advances in wearable and non-invasive sensor technologies have enabled new applications for climbing. This paper presents an overview and critical analysis of the scientific literature on sensors used during climbing. We focus on the several highlighted sensors with the ability to provide continuous measurements during climbing. These selected sensors consist of five main types (body movement, respiration, heart activity, eye gazing, skeletal muscle characterization) that demonstrate their capabilities and potential climbing applications. This review will facilitate the selection of these types of sensors in support of climbing training and strategies.

Fifth-generation (5G) networks offer high-speed data transmission with low latency, increased base station volume, improved quality of service (QoS), and massive multiple-input–multiple-output (M-MIMO) channels compared to 4G long-term evolution (LTE) networks. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the achievement of mobility and handover (HO) in 5G networks due to significant changes in intelligent devices and high-definition (HD) multimedia applications. Consequently, the current cellular network faces challenges in propagating high-capacity data with improved speed, QoS, latency, and efficient HO and mobility management. This comprehensive survey paper specifically focuses on HO and mobility management issues within 5G heterogeneous networks (HetNets). The paper thoroughly examines the existing literature and investigates key performance indicators (KPIs) and solutions for HO and mobility-related challenges while considering applied standards. Additionally, it evaluates the performance of current models in addressing HO and mobility management issues, taking into account factors such as energy efficiency, reliability, latency, and scalability. Finally, this paper identifies significant challenges associated with HO and mobility management in existing research models and provides detailed evaluations of their solutions along with recommendations for future research.

Anomaly detection in video surveillance is a highly developed subject that is attracting increased attention from the research community. There is great demand for intelligent systems with the capacity to automatically detect anomalous events in streaming videos. Due to this, a wide variety of approaches have been proposed to build an effective model that would ensure public security. There has been a variety of surveys of anomaly detection, such as of network anomaly detection, financial fraud detection, human behavioral analysis, and many more. Deep learning has been successfully applied to many aspects of computer vision. In particular, the strong growth of generative models means that these are the main techniques used in the proposed methods. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the deep learning-based techniques used in the field of video anomaly detection. Specifically, deep learning-based approaches have been categorized into different methods by their objectives and learning metrics. Additionally, preprocessing and feature engineering techniques are discussed thoroughly for the vision-based domain. This paper also describes the benchmark databases used in training and detecting abnormal human behavior. Finally, the common challenges in video surveillance are discussed, to offer some possible solutions and directions for future research.

The burgeoning complexity of space missions has amplified the research focus on robots that are capable of assisting astronauts in accomplishing tasks within space stations. Nevertheless, these robots grapple with substantial mobility challenges in a weightless environment. This study proposed an omnidirectional continuous movement method for a dual-arm robot, inspired by the movement patterns of astronauts within space stations. On the basis of determining the configuration of the dual-arm robot, the kinematics and dynamics model of the robot during contact and flight phases were established. Thereafter, several constraints are determined, including obstacle constraints, prohibited contact area constraints, and performance constraints. An optimization algorithm based on the artificial bee colony algorithm was proposed to optimize the trunk motion law, contact point positions between the manipulators and the inner wall, as well as the driving torques. Through the real-time control of the two manipulators, the robot is capable of achieving omnidirectional continuous movement across various inner walls with complex structures while maintaining optimal comprehensive performance. Simulation results demonstrate the correctness of this method. The method proposed in this paper provides a theoretical basis for the application of mobile robots within space stations.

Path coverage attracts many interests in some scenarios, such as object tracing in sensor networks. However, the problem of how to conserve the constrained energy of sensors is rarely considered in existing research. This paper studies two problems in the energy conservation of sensor networks that have not been addressed before. The first problem is called the least movement of nodes on path coverage. It first proves the problem as NP-hard, and then uses curve disjunction to separate each path into some discrete points, and ultimately moves nodes to new positions under some heuristic regulations. The utilized curve disjunction technique makes the proposed mechanism unrestricted by the linear path. The second problem is called the largest lifetime on path coverage. It first separates all nodes into independent partitions by utilizing the method of largest weighted bipartite matching, and then schedules these partitions to cover all paths in the network by turns. We eventually analyze the energy cost of the two proposed mechanisms, and evaluate the effects of some parameters on performance through extensive experiments, respectively.

Terahertz (THz) is a promising technology for future wireless communication networks, particularly for 6G and beyond. The ultra-wide THz band, ranging from 0.1 to 10 THz, can potentially address the limited capacity and scarcity of spectrum in current wireless systems such as 4G-LTE and 5G. Furthermore, it is expected to support advanced wireless applications requiring high data transmission and quality services, i.e., terabit-per-second backhaul systems, ultra-high-definition streaming, virtual/augmented reality, and high-bandwidth wireless communications. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has been used mainly for resource management, spectrum allocation, modulation and bandwidth classification, interference mitigation, beamforming, and medium access control layer protocols to improve THz performance. This survey paper examines the use of AI in state-of-the-art THz communications, discussing the challenges, potentials, and shortcomings. Additionally, this survey discusses the available platforms, including commercial, testbeds, and publicly available simulators for THz communications. Finally, this survey provides future strategies for improving the existing THz simulators and using AI methods, including deep learning, federated learning, and reinforcement learning, to improve THz communications.

The counting of surgical instruments is an important task to ensure surgical safety and patient health. However, due to the uncertainty of manual operations, there is a risk of missing or miscounting instruments. Applying computer vision technology to the instrument counting process can not only improve efficiency, but also reduce medical disputes and promote the development of medical informatization. However, during the counting process, surgical instruments may be densely arranged or obstruct each other, and they may be affected by different lighting environments, all of which can affect the accuracy of instrument recognition. In addition, similar instruments may have only minor differences in appearance and shape, which increases the difficulty of identification. To address these issues, this paper improves the YOLOv7x object detection algorithm and applies it to the surgical instrument detection task. First, the RepLK Block module is introduced into the YOLOv7x backbone network, which can increase the effective receptive field and guide the network to learn more shape features. Second, the ODConv structure is introduced into the neck module of the network, which can significantly enhance the feature extraction ability of the basic convolution operation of the CNN and capture more rich contextual information. At the same time, we created the OSI26 data set, which contains 452 images and 26 surgical instruments, for model training and evaluation. The experimental results show that our improved algorithm exhibits higher accuracy and robustness in surgical instrument detection tasks, with F1, AP, AP50, and AP75 reaching 94.7%, 91.5%, 99.1%, and 98.2%, respectively, which are 4.6%, 3.1%, 3.6%, and 3.9% higher than the baseline. Compared to other mainstream object detection algorithms, our method has significant advantages. These results demonstrate that our method can more accurately identify surgical instruments, thereby improving surgical safety and patient health.

Free-space optical (FSO) communication has been studied for next-generation network systems. Because an FSO system establishes point-to-point communication links, maintaining alignment among the transceivers is a critical challenge. In addition, atmospheric turbulence causes significant signal loss in FSO vertical links. Even in clear weather conditions, transmitted optical signals suffer significant scintillation losses due to random variations. Thus, the effect of atmospheric turbulence should be considered in vertical links. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between pointing error and scintillation from the aspect of beam divergence angle. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive beam that optimizes its divergence angle according to the pointing error between the communicating optical transceivers to mitigate the effect of scintillation due to pointing error. We performed a beam divergence angle optimization and compared it with adaptive beamwidth. The proposed technique was demonstrated using simulations, which revealed an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio and the mitigation of the scintillation effect. The proposed technique would be useful in minimizing the scintillation effect in vertical FSO links.

Monitoring and maintaining the health of wind turbine blades has long been one of the challenges facing the global wind energy industry. Detecting damage to a wind turbine blade is important for planning blade repair, avoiding aggravated blade damage, and extending the sustainability of blade operation. This paper firstly introduces the existing wind turbine blade detection methods and reviews the research progress and trends of monitoring of wind turbine composite blades based on acoustic signals. Compared with other blade damage detection technologies, acoustic emission (AE) signal detection technology has the advantage of time lead. It presents the potential to detect leaf damage by detecting the presence of cracks and growth failures and can also be used to determine the location of leaf damage sources. The detection technology based on the blade aerodynamic noise signal has the potential of blade damage detection, as well as the advantages of convenient sensor installation and real-time and remote signal acquisition. Therefore, this paper focuses on the review and analysis of wind power blade structural integrity detection and damage source location technology based on acoustic signals, as well as the automatic detection and classification method of wind power blade failure mechanisms combined with machine learning algorithm. In addition to providing a reference for understanding wind power health detection methods based on AE signals and aerodynamic noise signals, this paper also points out the development trend and prospects of blade damage detection technology. It has important reference value for the practical application of non-destructive, remote, and real-time monitoring of wind power blades.

This paper presents a new broadband ocean bottom seismograph (OBS) developed by the SUSTech OBS lab for passive-source seafloor seismic observations. This instrument, called Pankun, has several key features that set it apart from traditional OBS instruments. In addition to the seismometer-separated scheme, these features include a unique shielding structure to minimize current-induced noise, a compact gimbal for accurate leveling, and low power consumption for extended operation on the seafloor. The design and testing of Pankun’s primary components are thoroughly described in this paper. The instrument has been successfully tested in the South China Sea, demonstrating its ability to record high-quality seismic data. The anti-current shielding structure of Pankun OBS has the potential to improve low-frequency signals, particularly on the horizontal components, in seafloor seismic data.

Regarding the new demands and challenges of sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications, wireless networks are undergoing a significant shift from traditional terrestrial networks to space-air-ground-sea-integrated networks. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications in complicated mountainous scenarios are typical applications and have practical implications, especially in emergency communications. In this paper, the ray-tracing (RT) method was applied to reconstruct the propagation scenario and then acquire the wireless channel data. Channel measurements are also conducted in real mountainous scenarios for verification. By setting different flight positions, trajectories, and altitudes, channel data in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band was obtained. Important statistical properties, such as the power delay profile (PDP), Rician K-factor, path loss (PL), root mean square (RMS) delay spread (DS), RMS angular spreads (ASs), and channel capacity were compared and analyzed. The effects of different frequency bands on channel characteristics at 3.5 GHz, 4.9 GHz, 28 GHz, and 38 GHz bands in mountainous scenarios were considered. Furthermore, the effects of extreme weather, especially different precipitation, on the channel characteristics were analyzed. The related results can provide fundamental support for the design and performance evaluation of future 6G UAV-assisted sensor networks in complicated mountainous scenarios.

Useful information about the oxidative stability of a virgin olive oil in terms of oxidation products and antioxidant compounds can be obtained by analyzing the peroxide index (PI) and total phenolic content (TPC), respectively. These quality parameters are usually determined in a chemical laboratory using expensive equipment, toxic solvents, and well-trained personnel. This paper presents a novel portable sensor system for in the field and rapid determination of PI and TPC that is particularly suited in the case of small production environments that cannot afford an internal laboratory for quality control analysis. The system is small, can be powered by both USB ports and batteries, is easy to operate, and integrates a Bluetooth module for wireless data transmission. It estimates the PI and TPC in olive oil from the measurement of the optical attenuation of an emulsion between a reagent and the sample under test. The system has been tested on a set of 12 olive oil samples (eight for calibration and four for validation), and the results have shown how the considered parameters can be estimated with good accuracy. The maximum deviation from the results obtained with the reference analytical techniques is 4.7 meq O2/kg in the case of PI and 45.3 ppm in the case of TPC for the calibration set, while it is 14.8 meq O2/kg in the case of PI and 55 ppm in the case of TPC for the validation set.

In the scientific literature focused on surface electromyography (sEMG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which have been described together and separately many times, presenting different possible applications, researchers have explored a diverse range of topics related to these advanced physiological measurement techniques. However, the analysis of the two signals and their interrelationships continues to be a focus of study in both static and dynamic movements. The main purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between signals during dynamic movements. To carry out the analysis described, the authors of this research paper chose two sports exercise protocols: the Astrand–Rhyming Step Test and the Astrand Treadmill Test. In this study, oxygen consumption and muscle activity were recorded from the gastrocnemius muscle of the left leg of five female participants. This study found positive correlations between EMG and fNIRS signals in all participants: 0.343–0.788 (median-Pearson) and 0.192–0.832 (median-Spearman). On the treadmill, the signal correlations between the participants with the most active and least active lifestyle achieved the following medians: 0.788 (Pearson)/0.832 (Spearman) and 0.470 (Pearson)/0.406 (Spearman), respectively. The shapes of the changes in the EMG and fNIRS signals during exercise suggest a mutual relationship during dynamic movements. Furthermore, during the treadmill test, a higher correlation was observed between the EMG and NIRS signals in participants with a more active lifestyle. Due to the sample size, the results should be interpreted with caution.
