This article discusses the new nomenclature for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its implications in clinical practice. The term "metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease" (MASLD) has been proposed to replace NAFLD, as it more accurately reflects the disease's association with metabolic dysfunction. The diagnosis of MASLD is based on the presence of hepatic steatosis and at least one cardiometabolic risk factor.
