Inherited rift topography controls the sediment routing, timing of sand supply, and sedimentary linkage of early post‐rift depocentres. Exhumed examples of early post‐rift turbidite systems are rare and previous studies have examined the evolution of individual depocentres; in contrast, the detailed evolution of early post‐rift turbidite systems across multiple depocentres has never been documented. Current fill‐and‐spill models do not detail the stratigraphic architecture and evolution of sedimentological characteristics of multiple intraslope fans developed across topography, including bed type distributions. Here, the evolution of three intraslope fans that developed across two early post‐rift depocentres is documented along an 18 km long transect in the southern Neuquén Basin, Argentina. The relative chronology of sand supply in depocentres is constrained with new U–Pb ages, and sediment source areas with provenance analysis. The early post‐rift intraslope fans record progradation of the system and progressive sedimentary linkage of post‐rift depocentres, transverse to local syn‐rift structures, with sediment routing subparallel to the cratonic basin margin. The large‐scale stratigraphic architecture of intraslope fans indicates an evolution as a fill‐and‐spill system, with initial confinement through flow stripping and overspill to spillover with erosion and bypass across a transverse topographic high separating the depocentres. Changes in early post‐rift intraslope fan characteristics, including thickness, sandstone content, lobe complex stacking patterns, stratal termination patterns and bed type distribution, record changing confinement through time within a depocentre, and spatially across depocentres. The strong spatial and vertical stratigraphic variability of transitional flow deposits and hybrid event beds reflects enhanced erosion, sediment bypass and flow transformation across transverse relief between the two depocentres during the spillover phase. These findings advance current understanding of early post‐rift turbidite systems and refine fill‐and‐spill models, which will help the prediction of spatial and vertical changes in rock quality and connectivity in subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs and CO2 storage sites. Large rivers are characterized by large water discharges, high suspended sediment fluxes and low slope, and typically display multiple channels that are separated by large complex bars. The most common channel style found in these rivers is characterized by the alternating presence of single and multiple channel threads. Mid‐channel compound bars separate a main deeper channel from shallower secondary channels, leading to low‐order braiding and low to moderate sinuosity. Despite the importance of this type of river for global terrestrial sediment transport and the interpretation of ancient fluvial successions, integrated depositional models for large multi‐channel rivers are still not fully developed. This paper interprets the channel morphodynamics and depositional architecture of such large rivers by investigating the distinctive features of their laterally‐accreting mid‐channel bars in the Solimões–Amazonas River. This is achieved by examination of temporal series of satellite images, quantification of bedforms using multibeam echosounding surveys, analysis of shallow seismic and ground penetrating radar surveys of selected areas, and on‐site field observations and sample collections. Such mid‐channel bars produce directional variability in planform scroll bar accretion of up to 180°. As these bars – and their associated channels – evolve, they become progressively shallower, due to the bifurcation of the two channels and the resultant partitioning of discharge that leads to a gradual reduction in transport capacity within the outer channel. The preserved successions of this process in the alluvial plain are characterized by fining‐upward trends, with larger cross‐strata sets at mid‐depths and internal erosional surfaces marking distinct cycles of bar development with potentially differing palaeocurrent trends. The new depositional models proposed for these mid‐channel bars and channels constitute a basis for the recognition of large multi‐channel river deposits in the ancient rock record. Mixed grain‐size bedforms comprise alternating sand‐rich and poorly sorted mud‐rich laminae and bands. These bedforms have been identified in distal submarine settings formed underneath unidirectional flows. This study documents mixed grain‐size bedforms in a proximal submarine slope setting formed beneath both unidirectional and combined flows. Core and outcrop data with well‐constrained palaeogeographical context are used to describe two types of mixed grain‐size bedform. Type A bedforms comprise mud‐rich current ripples and low‐amplitude bed‐waves with alternating concave and planar sandstone–mudstone foresets that pass into mud‐rich troughs, and aggradational sinusoidal laminasets. Type B bedforms consist of sandstone–mudstone laminasets that comprise rounded, biconvex ripples with sigmoidal‐shaped foresets and swale and hummock‐like laminasets and banded sets. These bedforms occur in channel‐margin, internal‐levée and external‐levée, intraslope and disconnected lobe environments, and represent 27 to 63% by stratigraphic thickness of the studied successions. They are interpreted as deposits of clay‐rich transitional flows, whose depositional style is governed by the balance of cohesive and turbulent forces, and the rate of flow deceleration. Type B bedforms are further interpreted as combined transitional flow deposits, resulting from flow deflection and ponding processes by seabed topography. Upward and lateral transitions between different bedforms create distinct bedform sequences, demonstrating progressive spatio‐temporal transformations in flow properties and their topographic interactions. By using a well‐constrained palaeogeographical setting, mixed grain‐size bedforms are shown to be situated close to sites of erosion into muddy substrates, abrupt losses in confinement, and/or changes in slope gradient. These bedforms demonstrate that flow transformation and transitional flow behaviour are not restricted to distal submarine settings. Furthermore, mixed grain‐size bedforms are not a diagnostic criterion for bottom currents, because such flows cannot account for the high mud content in laminasets, or the interlamination of sand and mud. Autogenic feedbacks can produce large‐scale, organized stratigraphic patterns in alluvial fans, but autogenic depositional signatures of specific upstream boundary conditions remain challenging to interpret. Here, a combination of theory, experiment and field application is used to explore how autogenic lithofacies changes can be interpreted as stratigraphic indicators of upstream boundary conditions. Six experiments were conducted to test the effects of sediment supply and water discharge rates on autogenic advance and retreat of the lithofacies boundary (grain‐size transition) in an alluvial fan with two dominant grain sizes. Migration of the grain‐size transition caused a short‐term zigzag pattern in the grain‐size transition position in the dip‐directional deposit section. For each experiment, time‐lapse images and laser topographic scans of the fan surface and stratigraphic cross‐sections of the final deposits were used to quantify characteristic timescales of autogenic processes. Timescales for fan‐margin migration, surface wet‐fraction change and grain‐size transition migration generally shorten as sediment supply rate increases and water discharge rate decreases. Increasing the sediment supply rate shortens the duration of the fluvial sediment storage and release cycle, producing higher frequency zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. Increasing the water discharge tends to widen channels and lengthens the duration of the fluvial sediment storage and release cycle, constructing lower frequency zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. Increasing the water discharge also enables more sediment to transport further downstream during release events, leading to higher magnitude zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. These relationships between upstream boundary conditions and the grain‐size transition trajectory demonstrate how autogenic stratigraphic signals could be used as a tool to infer relative changes in boundary conditions. Distinguishing between shallow‐water delta and fluvial fan deposits in the subsurface of lacustrine basins is challenging due to their similar depositional characteristics and distribution patterns. This study focuses on the Middle Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in the central Sichuan Basin using core observations, seismic analyses, petrology analyses, zircon analyses, palaeoclimate indicators and palaeocurrent analyses to address this issue. Fifteen sedimentary lithofacies and eight lithofacies associations were established, corresponding to channelized fluvial deposits, non‐channelized fluvial deposits and shallow‐water delta deposits. Shallow‐water deltas are dominated by channels and mouth‐bar complexes with grey, red and green interbedded mudstone. Shingled seismic reflection, green mud clasts, small burrows and wave ripples are common with occasional palaeosols. Fluvial fans are dominated by channels and crevasse‐splays with pink colour and accompanied by red coloured floodplain deposits. Bright spot seismic reflection, red mud clasts, big burrows, current ripples and palaeosols are common. The increased uplift of the Dabashan Mountains controls the palaeocurrent direction, promoting the evolution from a shallow‐water delta in relatively humid environments to a fluvial fan in relatively arid environments. The channel widths in shallow‐water deltas are wider than those in fluvial fans, whereas the opposite applies for the channel amalgamation rate. Highly frequent channel‐width variations are controlled by short‐cycle climate fluctuation, corresponding to chemical index of alteration value fluctuations in different sandstone groups. The channel width in the relatively humid environments is wider than that in arid environments for both shallow‐water deltas and fluvial fans. It is likely that the sedimentary evolution from shallow‐water deltas to fluvial fans is relatively common in lacustrine basins in relatively arid environments with wide and gentle slope landforms. The deposits of the upper Neoproterozoic Zerrissene Group of central‐western Namibia represent a large siliciclastic deep‐water depositional system that showcases the intricacies of facies and architectural relationships from bed‐scale to fan‐system‐scale. The lack of vegetation in the Namib Desert and regular east–west repetition of folded stratigraphy (reflecting ca 50% tectonic shortening) provides quasi‐three‐dimensional exposure over a current area of approximately 2700 square kilometres. The Brak River Formation, the middle sand‐rich unit of the Zerrissene Group, consists of nearly 600 m of strata exposed in multiple parallel continuous outcrops up to ca 10 km in length and oriented obliquely to depositional dip. Ten stratigraphic sections are correlated ca 32 km (ca 64 km restored) across the basin and offer exposure comparable in scale to modern submarine fans. Six sedimentary facies are identified and grouped into four facies associations that represent axial‐to‐marginal portions of deep‐water lobes in an unconfined submarine fan system. Spatial facies patterns, regional thickness variations, and palaeocurrents indicate that Brak River Formation sediments were transported primarily from the north to south–south‐west through a trough‐like basin, and deposited within an unconfined basin plain at the junction of the Adamastor and Khomas oceans. The unique outcrop exposure and extent permits the documentation of system‐scale architecture and basin configuration of the Brak River submarine fan system. A transition from the sand‐rich lower Brak River Formation to more intercalated mudstone‐dominated intervals in the middle and upper Brak River Formation is interpreted to record a change from aggradational to compensational stacking of lobe deposits. This records the evolution of a large submarine fan as it filled the subtle seafloor topography and became less confined at the system‐scale. The documentation of these deep‐water deposits from centimetre‐scale to basin‐scale provides a new model for a system with extensive long‐distance transport of sand‐rich sediment gravity flows to submarine lobes without apparent channelization. Submarine levéed channels are often observed in submarine fans, although submarine fans without continuous levéed channels are also common depending on the composition of supplied sediments, particularly the proportion of muddy/sandy materials. However, parameters governing the inception of levéed channels have not yet been studied. Furthermore, depositional levéed channel topography has not been simulated in experimental flumes in any previous study conducted with dilute flows (flow concentration <10%). Herein, four experimental series were conducted (Series A, B, C and D) to simulate depositional submarine channels and to study their formative conditions. A mixture of sediment and saline water was used in the experiments, and both the width of an outlet diffuser and flow discharge rate were varied in the experimental series. A topography composed of a channel with two ridges resembling natural depositional submarine channels with levées was formed in all experiments. Comparisons between the experimental topographies and natural submarine fans revealed that two of the four experimental series produced channel levées with length to width ratios similar to those produced by natural systems. An experiment with half the outlet size produced a channel two times deeper (4.5 cm against 2.0 cm and 2.2 cm) as compared to other experiments. The flow discharge rate and outlet width were half of those observed in Series A and B. Furthermore, salt was removed from the initial mixture for one of the experiments, resulting in high natural levées with a short channel. This study demonstrated that dilute flows could form purely depositional channel levées without precursor or resultant erosive features. Flood‐generated hyperpycnal flows are dense, sediment‐laden, turbulent flows that can form long‐lived, bottom‐hugging turbidity currents, which undoubtedly transport large volumes of fine‐grained sediments into the ocean. However, their ability in transferring sand into deep‐water basins is debated. This study presents sedimentological evidence of sandy hyperpycnal flow deposits (hyperpycnites) in a series of basin floor lobe complexes associated with a progradational shelf margin in the Eocene of Spitsbergen, Arctic Norway. Four coexisting types of sediment gravity flow deposits are recognized: (i) sandy hyperpycnites deposited by quasi‐steady hyperpycnal flows; (ii) turbidites deposited by waning, surge‐type turbidity currents; (iii) hybrid event beds deposited by transitional flows; and (iv) mass transport deposits emplaced during rare slope failures. The abundance of thick‐bedded massive sandstones, frequent bed amalgamation, the distribution of hyperpycnites across the lobes and the abundance and systematic occurrence of plant‐rich hybrid event beds and associated climbing ripple cross‐laminated beds in the lobe fringes, suggest that hyperpycnal flow was the most important mechanism driving lobe progradation. Shelf‐edge positioned fluvial channels linked to the basin floor lobe complexes via deeply incised, sandstone‐filled slope channels, suggest that rivers fed directly onto the slopes where their dense, sand‐laden discharges readily generated quasi‐steady hyperpycnal flows that regularly reached the basin floor. The composite architecture and complex waxing–waning flow facies configuration of the hyperpycnites is consistent with sustained and concomitant suspension and traction deposition under fluctuating subcritical to supercritical conditions. Similar sandstone beds occur on the clinoform slopes, indicating that the hyperpycnal flows operated likewise on the slope. Plant‐rich hybrid event beds indicate transformation of initially turbulent flows by relative enrichment of clay and plant material via progressive sand deposition to such an extent that it suppressed turbulence. The multi‐faceted character of the hyperpycnites reported here, challenges traditional beliefs that hyperpycnites assumingly preserve the waxing–waning signal of single‐peaked floods. Sediment gravity flows exhibit a large range of flow behaviours, making their flow dynamics hard to predict and the resulting deposits a challenge to interpret. Cohesive sediment gravity flows containing clay are particularly complex, as their behaviour is controlled by the balance of turbulent and cohesive forces. A first set of laboratory lock‐exchange experiments investigated the effect of adding 25% very fine sand by volume to high‐density cohesive sediment gravity flows with strongly suppressed turbulence. This caused these mixed clay–sand flows to become more cohesive, have shorter runout distances, and have lower head velocities than the original pure‐clay flows, despite the increase in density difference and the non‐cohesive properties of the sand. Yield stress measurements confirmed that adding the non‐cohesive very fine sand increases the cohesive strength of dense clay suspensions. This higher cohesive strength outcompetes the enhanced density difference and reduces the flow mobility. A second set of experiments across a larger range of clay concentrations showed that, for low‐density cohesive sediment gravity flows dominated by turbulent mixing, the addition of 25% very fine sand increased the head velocities because of the enhanced density difference and weak cohesive forces. Thus, the addition of very fine sand may increase or decrease the mobility of cohesive sediment gravity flows, depending on the initial type of flow and the balance between turbulent and cohesive forces. In the natural environment, this study proposes that very fine sand can only increase the cohesive strength and reduce the flow mobility of cohesive sediment gravity flows that have a sufficiently strong matrix strength to fully support the sand particles. The contribution of very fine sand to the cohesive strength of high‐density cohesive sediment gravity flows may have important implications for flow transformation on submarine fans, especially in distal regions where transient–turbulent, cohesive flows are particularly common. The sedimentary architecture of channelized turbidites can be highly complex as it reflects the response of submarine channels to several interplaying factors. Although intensively investigated through seismic imaging, turbidite channel fills are not convincingly calibrated for sedimentary facies at a sub‐seismic scale. This contribution addresses the sedimentary architecture and the controls on the evolution of a ca 20 m thick channel‐levee complex of the Tachrift turbidite subunit (Upper Miocene, the Melloulou Formation), which accumulated along the southern slope of the Neogene Taza‐Guercif Basin (Rifian Corridor of north‐east Morocco). Facies and architectural analyses indicate that the studied channel‐levee complex is the result of three‐fold evolution. From base to top, it is comprised of: (i) a ca 7 m thick lower mud‐prone interval containing relatively small and vertically stacked channel fills with poorly developed muddy levees; (ii) a ca 4 m thick and >1 km wide sandstone‐rich middle interval made of lateral accretion packages that become progressively less amalgamated and fine‐grained and is overlain by ca 5 m of thin‐bedded mud‐rich turbidites intercalated with hemiplegic marlstones; and (iii) an up to ca 9 m thick upper interval constituted by aggradational channel fills with well‐developed levees and variously directed lateral accretion packages. This organization suggests that, following a phase of inception (lower interval), the channel underwent extensive meandering with very minor vertical aggradation, prior to being blanketed by 'retrogressive' muddy lobes (middle interval) during a phase of reduced sediment input. In turn, the uppermost interval records a late phase of channel re‐establishment and aggradation that likely terminated as a result of up‐dip avulsion. It is suggested that the observed change of architectural style reflected the feedback of changing sediment input, slope equilibrium profile and channel morphodynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The International Ocean Discovery Program cored five sites during Expeditions 372 and 375 to investigate the Hikurangi margin, offshore Poverty Bay, North Island, New Zealand. Trench‐wedge deposits were recovered at Site U1520, and the frontal accretionary prism was cored at Site U1518. Based on X‐ray diffraction analyses of the clay‐sized fraction, illite and smectite are the dominant clay minerals. Compositional scatter is unusually large, and a well‐defined mixing trend is evident between illite‐rich and smectite‐rich end members. The proportion of smectite ranges from 9 to 59 wt.% at Site U1518 and from 12 to 62 wt.% at Site U1520. Nearby slope deposits at Sites U1517 and U1519 are more homogeneous, with consistently higher proportions of smectite. The East Cape Current is probably responsible for transporting smectite‐rich suspensions towards the south‐west from sources that include the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Illite‐rich muds require different sources and different routing paths to the trench. Some suspended sediment probably originated in the Waipaoa watershed on the North Island, entering the trench via Māhia Canyon. Other gravity flows probably started in Kaikōura Canyon or Cook Strait and moved towards the north‐east, down the trench's axial channel. The influence of turbidity currents on clay composition changes with water depth, as do the effects of reworking by contour currents and the role of passive hemipelagic settling. The broad continuum of clay compositions in the trench is enhanced by variable amounts of mixing among multiple ocean currents and fluctuating durations of suspension within a bottom nepheloid layer. That complexity deviates from the paradigm of turbidite‐dominated trench wedges. The margin's compositional diversity also complicates the goal of predicting or modelling three‐dimensional variations in frictional, geotechnical and hydrogeological properties. Hemipelagites are widespread fine‐grained sediments found from shelf margin to deep‐water environments, and they are considered to have been formed as background sedimentation by vertical settling and slow lateral advection of clastic and biogenic fine‐grained particles. Downflow variation in hemipelagic sedimentation, however, is not yet clearly understood, and was investigated in the lower Pleistocene Kiwada and Takamizo formations in the Kazusa forearc basin on the Boso Peninsula, Japan. Mapping of three tephra key beds enabled detailed correlation of two hemipelagite beds over a distance of ca 30 km from shelf‐margin to basin‐plain environments. The sedimentation rates decreased gradually in the downslope direction, but increased locally in response to turbidite sedimentation. This downslope variation indicates that hemipelagic sedimentation is not necessarily constant and varies in response to progradation and retrogradation of deep‐water depositional systems, as well as additional input of fine‐grained sediments from turbidity currents. In contrast, the grain size, magnetic susceptibility, clay‐mineral composition, total organic carbon contents relative to total nitrogen contents (carbon/nitrogen), and δ13C values of organic carbon do not exhibit distinct downslope variation. This downslope consistency indicates that hemipelagites document temporal perturbations of geological and palaeoclimatic conditions in hinterlands, regardless of spatial and temporal variations in deep‐water depositional environments. The concentrations of total organic carbon, total nitrogen and five biomarkers were lower values in turbiditic mudstones and hemipelagites that formed above a turbidite bed than in those of the other hemipelagites. This variation suggests that an additional supply of fine‐grained sediments from turbidity currents likely diluted the organic matter in the hemipelagites. In addition, hemipelagites for which deposition was affected by turbidity currents exhibit slightly lower δ13C values, and may also document an additional contribution of terrestrial organic matter from turbidity currents. The Upper Oligocene to Lower Miocene (Zhuhai Formation) in the Pearl River Mouth Basin of the northern South China Sea contains extensive shelf‐edge delta and linked slope fan deposits, and records the sediment dispersal and constraint processes. According to the integrated analysis of well‐log, seismic and core data, depositional architecture and delivery mechanism of sandy deposits from the shelf margin to the lower slope are documented systematically. Four major depositional facies are identified: shelf‐edge incised channels and shelf‐edge deltas; amalgamated slump‐channel complexes; slope gullies; and slope fan deposits. Incised channels at shelf‐edge delta front (2.0 to 4.4 km wide) comprise V‐shaped single channels and W‐shaped or irregular‐shaped channels which eroded shelf‐edge sandy deltaic deposits and retransferred them to the lower slope. Further slumping along channel walls may be triggered by the continuously channel downcutting process; and then these incised channels amalgamated and collapsed downslope to generate large‐scale coalesced slump‐channel complexes (15 to 35 km wide), which are regarded as the main delivery system to transport sandy deltaic deposits to the deep‐water basin. There are a series of V‐shaped or W‐shaped slope gullies (tens to hundreds of metres wide) developed along the lower slope, which further delivered sediments to slope fan systems. Slope fan systems are composed predominantly of basal debris flow massive and sandy turbidite channel and frontal splay deposits comprising one of the most important oil and gas reservoirs in the study area. Channelization and large‐scale slumping along the shelf‐edge delta front are regarded as the most important dispersal mechanisms delivering sandy sediments across the shelf margin. Falling sea level was suggested to be one of the important factors causing the incision and large‐scale shelf margin slumps, whereas the unstable high (800 to 1200 m) and steep (5° to 8°) shelf‐edge delta and slope clinoforms provide a pre‐condition for large‐scale shelf‐edge collapse. Erosional scars, slumps, slides and debrites (mass‐transport deposits) on submarine slopes form relief that influences turbidity current behaviour. However, the interaction of mass‐transport deposit emplacement kinematics (i.e. rapid emplacement versus creep), the morphology of the evolving seafloor topography and subsequent flow types is complicated. This study describes two outcrop examples of deep‐water, predominantly turbiditic, deposits overlying mass‐transport deposits, from the Eocene slope succession of the Aínsa Basin (Spanish Pyrenees). In both examples, the mass‐transport deposit substrate continued to creep contemporaneously with turbidity current deposition and bypass. In the first case study, structures in the mass‐transport deposits are extensional and oriented parallel to flow. In the second, structures are compressional and oriented perpendicular to flow. Mudstones dominate the slope succession, but deposits overlying mass‐transport deposits form sandstone‐prone accumulations. Lateral confinement by flow‐parallel extensional faults enhanced channel‐formation. Channel incision occurred close to the exhumed fault plane on the hangingwall. Incision ceased as the fault gradually locked‐up, and channels avulsed to the hangingwall of a newly active normal fault, while the abandoned channel was filled by a thinning and fining‐upward succession. Barriers formed where the long axes of compressional anticlines developed in mass‐transport deposits formed perpendicular to flow. Here, turbidites filled the bathymetric lows in the axes of synclines. Continued tightening of synclinal depocentres led to repeated stoss side trapping and upslope accretion of coarse‐grained sediment accumulation. This generated thickening and coarsening‐up, followed by thinning and fining‐upward successions, tracking the decreasing, then increasing flow bypass associated with topographic expression on the mass‐transport deposit. This study shows how post‐emplacement creep, and orientation of topographic features on mass‐transport deposits, influence the routing and deposition of contemporaneous turbidity currents, and illustrates examples of facies successions that could be misinterpreted as the product of other autogenic submarine slope processes, such as lateral migration of sinuous channels, or compensational lobe stacking. Palaeodischarge estimation is largely undertaken within fluvial settings. However, there are limited palaeodischarge estimates specifically from delta deposits, despite their significance globally. Estimating water palaeodischarges for deltas using catchment‐based approaches developed using data from fluvial settings requires estimating parameters from the rock record (for example, palaeotemperature, palaeoslope and palaeorelief). These may be difficult to determine, leading to under‐estimation or over‐estimation of palaeodischarge values due to differences in process‐form relationships between alluvial rivers and deltas. When a sediment‐conveying fluvial channel enters a standing body of water, delta lobes develop through repeating mouth bar deposition due to flow deceleration, forming a deltaic morphology with distributary channel networks that differ morphologically from those developed in unidirectional flowing alluvial rivers. This study provides empirical relationships determined across five climate regions, using 3823 measurements of distributary channel width from 66 river deltas alongside the trunk river bankfull discharge that feeds into the entire delta, using a hydraulic geometry scaling approach. Empirical relationships are developed from the global delta dataset between bankfull discharge and catchment area (Qb–A), and bankfull discharge and median distributary channel width (Qb–Wmed). These empirical relationships produce very strong statistical correlations, especially between Qb and Wmed, across different climate regions (Qb = 0.34 Wmed1.48, R2 = 0.77). However, both Qb–A and Qb–Wmed relationships have outliers that may be explained by particular hydrological or geomorphic conditions. These new empirical relationships derived from modern systems are then applied to Cretaceous outcrops (Ferron Sandstone and Dunvegan Formation). The comparatively simple scaling relationships derived here produced palaeodischarge estimates within the same order of magnitude as palaeodischarge values previously obtained using existing, more complex approaches. This study contributes to source‐to‐sink investigations by enabling palaeodischarge estimates that intrinsically account for climate impacts on channel geometry at the time of deposition, using measurements of channel width or catchment area of a deltaic outcrop. While Ediacaran cap dolostones research is a hot topic, detailed sedimentological analysis of barite‐bearing cap dolostones remains scarce. Here, new data are presented from Xiangerwan in northern Three Gorges, South China, to illustrate the sedimentary characteristics, depositional environment and formation mechanism of the barite‐bearing cap dolostone. In ascending order, the succession is divided into: (i) pebbly dolostone; (ii) dolostone with unusual sedimentary structures (for example, sheet cracks and tepee structures); and (iii) barite‐bearing facies. The gravels of the pebbly dolostone record the slow relative sea‐level rise during post‐glacial transgression, with a local terrestrial influence. Sheet cracks and tepee structures represent water escape structures in the supratidal and upper intertidal zone, and gently wavy stromatolites in barite‐bearing facies are deposits typical of the upper intertidal zone. In addition, primary radial length‐slow dolomite cements were originally precipitated at the seafloor. In general, the cap dolostone was formed in a shallow‐water ramp environment. The form and sedimentary characteristics of barites indicate a primary (syngenetic) origin and help to divide the barites into bladed (Type I) and needle‐like (Type II) variants. With the ongoing melting of the Marinoan glacier and water density stratification, the cap dolostone was gradually precipitated, accompanied by exotic gravels input. The stratification persisted, and special sedimentary structures were widely developed. Phosphorus and barium ions were brought up from the deep basin by upwelling, indicated by the flourishing stromatolites and barite fan deposition. Above the sediment–water interface, the Type I barite first grew upward from substrates, then the Type II barite could grow either in the reverse 'V‐shape' cavities between and within the Type I barite clusters, forming rhythm layers with bedded dolomite, or scattered in the laminae of stromatolites or surrounding dolomite. Finally, the formation of barite fans indicates the end of cap dolostone deposition and deeper water sedimentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on high‐quality two‐dimensional seismic profiles and well data, the seismic reflection characteristics from the late Pliocene and Pleistocene succession of the Qiongdongnan Basin in the South China Sea have been analysed. The result will help in understanding the sedimentological development of slope areas. Twenty coeval clinothems are recognized and four major clinothem types are distinguished. In addition, three types of shelf‐edge trajectories are recognized. The various parameters of the clinothems are analysed quantitatively and the relationships between the various clinothem types are studied in combination with the controlling roles. It is concluded that: (i) the shelf‐edge trajectories are related to the type of clinothem; (ii) fluctuations in the relative sea level, in combination with variations in sediment supply, result in different clinothem types and geometric parameters; these parameters show interdependencies; (iii) the alternations of progradation and aggradation of clinothems may provide information of the relative sea level and changes in sediment supply; (iv) some lowstand fans could develop at the foot of the slope in the central–eastern part of the basin when the relative sea level started to fall or began to rise. The results of the present study are consequently significant for further quantitative analyses of the characteristics and development of the continental slope, not only in the Qiongdongnan Basin, but also in other basins. Fluvially‐dominated, fine‐grained, shallow‐water deltas are more variable than is generally recognized. Studies of the Mississippi River imply rather persistent river‐mouth jet dynamics, resulting in either progressive channel bifurcation around middle‐ground mouth bars on lobate deltas, or steady channel progradation to form elongate deltas akin to the modern Mississippi Delta. By contrast, satellite imagery and historical maps of less well‐known fluvially‐dominated deltas show diverse river‐mouth deposits, with plan‐form shapes ranging from river‐mouth fans, through splay, triangular, frond and tongue‐shaped mouth bars, to elongate channels with prominent subaqueous levées. Critically, such deposits may vary along individual channels and across or between individual lobes suggesting that jet variability can be normal, and that a spectrum of jets forms a suite of stable river‐mouth deposits. Channel elongation can also be common. In addition to high‐inertia jets and delta‐head or backwater‐mediated avulsion, two further mechanisms are recognized to form elongate channels. Following channel splitting, dominant splits can shoulder aside mouth bars, so that subordinate splits wither and dominant splits extend the parent channel. Alternatively, river‐mouth fans, subordinate distributary networks and lobes may be abandoned, so that a dominant parent distributary is rejuvenated by receiving an increase in discharge, allowing progradation to continue. Individual real‐world deltas are expected to be characterized by a range of river‐mouth deposits, both laterally and over time. However, such variable river‐mouth deposits, and different modes of channel elongation, are not generally considered in models of fluvially‐dominated deltas – omissions that may have significant impact for land remediation projects on modern deltas, and descriptions of the subsurface constructed to aid resource extraction. Fractionation of particles in deep‐water sediment gravity flows is an important factor in the resulting deposit and for discriminating sedimentary environments, but remains poorly understood. Quantitative characterization of particle shape was performed for more than ten‐thousand particles of experimental gravity flow experiments (both of cohesive and non‐cohesive nature) made using coal and kaolin particles. Eleven particle shape parameters were calculated and their distribution and trends within the experimental basin were evaluated. Results indicate the existence of non‐normal distributions and observable correlations between particle shape parameters. Shape parameters such as circularity and roundness are dominant controls on shape variation. Strong correlations exist between mean shape parameters and along‐flow distance from the source for particles in non‐cohesive flow experiments. Important differences were observed between shape parameter distributions of particles sampled at different areas within the experimental basin, which can be grouped based on their depositional setting (proximal or distal) using multivariate statistical analysis, especially for the non‐cohesive flow experiments. A tendency for more elongated and irregularly‐shaped particles at the more distal and marginal areas of the studied experimental basin was observed and validated by previous field studies in real‐world deep‐marine deposits. Besides, fractionation of particles is less‐pronounced in cohesive flows compared with non‐cohesive ones suggesting the soundness of discrimination of depositional settings based solely on particle shape characteristics is strongly dependent on parent flow characteristics. Yet, results highlight the potential of particle shape analysis in revealing spatial particle shape trends due to hydrodynamic fractionation and discriminating different depositional settings within submarine fans. Current knowledge of submarine fan deposits has historically relied heavily on qualitative field and subsurface observations and interpretations, but recent studies using statistical analyses have enhanced the understanding of submarine fan sub‐environments, including the degree of confinement, stratigraphic patterns and potential control factors. The purpose of this study is to improve the quantitative understanding of synorogenic submarine fan deposition at foreland basin settings with a statistical approach. A suite of statistical methods is integrated and developed (Hurst Statistics/rescaled range analysis, bed thickness frequency distribution analysis, Markov Chains and time‐series analysis), and applied to the well‐understood Pennsylvanian lower Atoka submarine fan system in the Ouachita Mountains, United States, for this purpose. The results of the Hurst Statistics and bed thickness analyses corroborate qualitative interpretations that: (i) the lower Atoka is lobe‐dominated; and (ii) the south‐eastern (wedge top) portion of the system is more strongly confined than the northern (foredeep) portion. The Markov Chains and time‐series analyses reveal the prevalence (56% of the measured sections) of stratigraphic orderliness and cyclicity; these results are used to discuss potential control signals, which are otherwise difficult to distinguish, on the turbidite sandstone recurrence cycles. The results of this study demonstrate that these integrated statistical methods can be utilized to quantify depositional interpretations and extract hidden information using outcrops with limited exposures.
