This paper describes and interprets the mineral and facies assemblages that occur in carbonate-evaporite shallow lacustrine deposits, considering the importance of the processes pathway (i.e. dolomitization, gypsum calcitization and silicification). The Palaeogene deposits of the Deza Formation (Almazán Basin, central-northern Spain) are selected as a case study to determine the variety of physicochemical processes taking place in carbonate-evaporite shallow lakes and their resulting diagenetic features. Dolostones are the predominant lithology and are composed mainly of dolomite with variable amounts of secondary calcite (5 to 50%), which mainly mimic lenticular gypsum (pseudomorphs). Five morphological types of dolomite crystal were identified as follows: dolomite tubes, dolomite cylinders, rhombohedral dolomite, spheroidal and quasi-rhombohedral dolomite, and cocoon-shaped dolomite. The dolomite cylinders and tubes are interpreted as the dolomitized cells of a widespread microbial community. The sequence of diagenetic processes started with growth of microlenticular interstitial gypsum in a calcareous mud deposited on the playa margin mudflats, and that sometimes included microbial sediments. Immediately following growth of gypsum, dolomite replaced the original calcite (or possibly aragonite) muds, the microbial community and the gypsum. Partial or total replacement of gypsum by dolomite was related mainly to the biomineralization of endolithic microbial communities on gypsum crystals. Later calcitization took place under vadose, subaerial exposure conditions. The development of calcrete in distal alluvial settings favoured the release of silica and subsequent silicification on the playa margin mudflats. Stable isotope compositions of calcite range from −9·02 to −5·83‰ δ13 CPDB and −7·10 to 1·22‰ δ18 OPDB; for the dolomite, these values vary from −8·93 to −3·96‰ δ13 CPDB and −5·53 to 2·4‰ δ18 OPDB. Quartz from the cherts has δ18 OSMOW values ranging from 27·1 to 31·1‰. Wide variation and relatively high δ18 OSMOW values for dolomite indicate evaporitic and closed hydrological conditions; increased influx of meteoric waters reigned during the formation of secondary calcite spar. Facies models that adequately represent the diverse range of fine-grained fluvial systems are currently lacking from the literature. In this paper, the spectrum of these systems on the arid plains of western equatorial Pangea is explored, as well as the source and nature of the fine-grained sediments. Eight fluvial elements in the Early Permian Clear Fork Formation of north-central Texas represent channel systems up to 7 m deep with coarse basal deposits, three types of lateral-accretion deposits and sandstone sheets, with laminated, disrupted and massive mudstones laid down in abandoned channels and on floodplains. The three fine-grained fluvial styles represent a continuum between two end-members: sustained lateral accretion of bedload composed of quartzose sediments and mud aggregates on point bars, and oblique accretion of suspended sediment on steep accretionary benches and banks with limited lateral migration. This spectrum is controlled, in part, by grain size and the proportion of suspended to bedload sediments. The presence of rarely documented swept ripples on exhumed accretion surfaces is attributed to rapid decline in water levels and downstream re-entry of overbank floodwaters into the channel. Rill casts, roots and disrupted mudstones low down in channel bodies indicate periods of near-dryness. Laterally extensive sheet sandstones were formed by episodic flows in broad, sandbed channels. The fluvial sediments were primarily intrabasinally sourced with extrabasinal sediments brought in during major floods from upland source areas or reworked from local storage in the basin, representing a supply limited system. The upward change in cement composition from mainly calcite and ankerite to dolomite and gypsum with minor celestine implies increasingly saline groundwater and progressive aridification, supporting Late Palaeozoic palaeoclimatic models. By integrating petrographic data with sedimentology, a plethora of information about ancient landscapes and climate is provided, allowing a fuller comparison between the Clear Fork Formation and modern dryland alluvial plains. Miocene carbonate successions found on many isolated oceanic islands throughout south‐east Asia commonly include unconformity capped 'island dolostones' units. On Shidao, located in the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, well XK‐1 (1268.2 m deep) penetrated a thick succession of carbonates before being terminated in the Jurassic metamorphic basement. The lower part of the succession is composed of the Sanya Formation (Early Miocene) and the overlying Meishan Formation (Middle Miocene), ca 700 m thick, that are formed of limestones and dolostones. An unconformity divides the Sanya Formation into a Lower Member formed largely of limestones, and an Upper Member formed of dolostones (DI‐8). DI‐8 is separated by a major unconformity into lower (DI‐8L) and upper (DI‐8U) units, that both include numerous subaerial unconformities. The overlying Meishan Formation is a limestone succession that includes three unconformity‐capped dolostones intervals (DI‐5, DI‐6 and DI‐7). Strata below the numerous exposure surfaces throughout the Sanya and Meishan formations are highlighted by Fe‐staining, biomoulds, cavities, caves and solution breccia development. The weakly fabric‐retentive dolostones in DI‐5 to DI‐8 are formed of dolomite crystals that have a dirty core encased by a clear rim, with δ18O values of +0.3 to +4.7‰ (average +2.0‰, n = 50), δ13C values of +2.2 to +3.2‰ (average +2.5‰, n = 50), Fe concentrations of 44 to 442 ppm (average 149 ppm, n = 50), Mn concentrations of 5 to 197 ppm (average 27 ppm, n = 50), Sr concentrations of 169 to 257 ppm (average 218 ppm, n = 50) and 87Sr/86Sr values of 0.70847 to 0.70900 (average 0.70879, n = 32). In all cases, dolomitization post‐dated the subaerial exposure. The 87Sr/86Sr values suggest that the dolostones in DI‐8L formed during the late Early Miocene, whereas the dolostones in DI‐8U, DI‐7, DI‐6 and DI‐5 probably formed simultaneously during the Late Miocene even though these units are stratigraphically hundreds of metres apart and were located well below sea‐level. Dolomitization was preferentially focused in those strata with high porosities and permeabilities that allowed easy circulation of the seawater through the rock. This model suggests that dolomitization was not restricted to strata that were at or close to sea‐level. Although dolomitization may have been related to the new oceanographic circulation regime established during that time, the exact properties of the seawater that promoted dolomitization are open to debate. The formation of ordered dolomite under Earth's surface conditions remains a challenge, although many researchers have now shown that microbes can facilitate the precipitation of this common mineral. This study provides the first evidence of dolomite biomineralization by the green alga Spirogyra (Zygnematales, Chlorophyta), a globally dispersed lacustrine genus. Microbial mats formed by Spirogyra occur in the hyperalkaline and ephemeral lake Caballo Alba, located in Central Spain and characterized by water solutions with high Mg/Ca ratios. Microscopic, geochemical, mineralogical and cytochemical studies have shown that accumulations of carbonates occur within different cells and locations of the alga. Biominerals mostly consist of single crystals of magnesian calcite and dolomite with variable proportions of Ca2+ and Mg2+. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction patterns of the carbonates confirm the pervasive presence of super‐lattice reflections typical of ordered dolomite in compositions with greater than 32 mol% MgCO3. The curved surfaces of some carbonate crystals and their attachment to the organic surfaces represent imprints of a confined growth in compartments that act as a template for crystal nucleation and shape the crystals. Dyes reveal chemical differences in these compartments which explain the polymineral biomineralization and suggest that the alga do not strictly control the precipitation process. Zygnematales algae related with Spirogyra date back possibly to the Early Palaeozoic, thus suggesting that dolomite biomineralization could have been a common process through the Phanerozoic. The biogeochemical cycles of carbon and silicon are tightly coupled in modern marine environments due to the pivotal role of planktonic diatoms. Once diatoms are sedimented, the fate of organic matter and biogenic silica is initially governed by bottom water oxygen levels and bacterial communities involved in remineralization processes. The early diagenesis of biosiliceous sediments may result in drastic changes in composition, sometimes hampering palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Sedimentary successions deposited in the Mediterranean region during the Messinian salinity crisis (5.97–5.33 Ma) allow to explore the early diagenetic transformation of organic matter and biogenic silica in a restricted basin experiencing a severe palaeoceanographic turnover. Sedimentological and petrographic observations coupled to elemental, mineralogical, inorganic and organic geochemical analyses were carried out on biosiliceous (diatomaceous shales and diatom‐bearing mudstones) and associated clay‐rich and dolomite‐rich sediments (dolomitic mudstones) interbedded with primary gypsum layers in the Piedmont Basin (north‐west Italy). The state of preservation of biogenic silica was governed by different pathways of organic matter remineralization, depending on bottom and pore water redox conditions, which were controlled by the structure of the water column. Aerobic respiration of organic matter in a mixed water column and an oxygenated seafloor promoted biogenic silica preservation. In contrast, bottom water anoxia induced by permanent stratification of the water column favoured the concomitant formation of dolomite and authigenic clays. In particular, organic matter degradation through bacterial sulphate reduction increased pore water alkalinity, promoting the precipitation of dolomite. At the same time, the rise in pH promoted the dissolution of biogenic silica which, reacting with pore water cations, ultimately caused the formation of authigenic clays. This study suggests that the apparent annihilation of Mediterranean marine biota during the Messinian salinity crisis partially reflects an early diagenetic bias produced by interactions of the carbon, silicon and sulphur biogeochemical cycles in a restricted basin. While Ediacaran cap dolostones research is a hot topic, detailed sedimentological analysis of barite‐bearing cap dolostones remains scarce. Here, new data are presented from Xiangerwan in northern Three Gorges, South China, to illustrate the sedimentary characteristics, depositional environment and formation mechanism of the barite‐bearing cap dolostone. In ascending order, the succession is divided into: (i) pebbly dolostone; (ii) dolostone with unusual sedimentary structures (for example, sheet cracks and tepee structures); and (iii) barite‐bearing facies. The gravels of the pebbly dolostone record the slow relative sea‐level rise during post‐glacial transgression, with a local terrestrial influence. Sheet cracks and tepee structures represent water escape structures in the supratidal and upper intertidal zone, and gently wavy stromatolites in barite‐bearing facies are deposits typical of the upper intertidal zone. In addition, primary radial length‐slow dolomite cements were originally precipitated at the seafloor. In general, the cap dolostone was formed in a shallow‐water ramp environment. The form and sedimentary characteristics of barites indicate a primary (syngenetic) origin and help to divide the barites into bladed (Type I) and needle‐like (Type II) variants. With the ongoing melting of the Marinoan glacier and water density stratification, the cap dolostone was gradually precipitated, accompanied by exotic gravels input. The stratification persisted, and special sedimentary structures were widely developed. Phosphorus and barium ions were brought up from the deep basin by upwelling, indicated by the flourishing stromatolites and barite fan deposition. Above the sediment–water interface, the Type I barite first grew upward from substrates, then the Type II barite could grow either in the reverse 'V‐shape' cavities between and within the Type I barite clusters, forming rhythm layers with bedded dolomite, or scattered in the laminae of stromatolites or surrounding dolomite. Lacustrine dolomite nucleation commonly occurs in modern and Neogene evaporitic alkaline lakes. As a result, ancient lacustrine microcrystalline dolomite has been conventionally interpreted to be formed in evaporitic environments. This study, however, suggests a non‐evaporitic origin of dolomite precipitated in a volcanic–hydrothermal lake, where hydrothermal and volcanic processes interacted. The dolomite occurs in lacustrine fine‐grained sedimentary rocks in the middle Permian Lucaogou Formation in the Santanghu intracontinental rift basin, north‐west China. Dolostones are composed mainly of nano‐sized to micron‐sized dolomite with a euhedral to subhedral shape and a low degree of cation ordering, and are interlaminated and intercalated with tuffaceous shale. Non‐dolomite minerals, including quartz, alkaline feldspars, smectite and magnesite mix with the dolomite in various proportions. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.704528 to 0.705372, average = 0.705004) and δ26Mg values (−0.89 to −0.24‰, average = −0.55‰) of dolostones are similar to those of mantle rocks, indicating that the precipitates mainly originated from fluids that migrated upward from the mantle and were subject to water–rock reactions at a great depth. The δ18O values (−3.1 to −22.7‰, average = −14.0‰) of the dolostones indicate hydrothermal influence. The trace and rare earth element concentrations suggest a saline, anoxic and volcanic–hydrothermally‐influenced subaqueous environment. In this subaqueous environment of Lucaogou lake, locally high temperatures and a supply of abundant Mg2+ from a deep source induced by volcanic–hydrothermal activity formed favourable chemical conditions for direct precipitation of primary dolomite. This study's findings deepen the understanding of the origin and processes of lacustrine primary dolomite formation and provide an alternative possibility for environmental interpretations of ancient dolostones. The higher abundance of dolomite in the Neoproterozoic compared with that of the Phanerozoic has been linked to elevated marine Mg/Ca ratios, and a hypothesized 'dolomite sea' that promoted widespread syn‐sedimentary fibrous dolomite cement precipitation. This article provides new uranium–lead (U–Pb) chronology, clumped isotope thermometry (TΔ47), combined with δ13C and δ18O, and trace element geochemistry measurements for different types of dolomite, including bulk dolomite matrix (BD), fibrous dolomite cements (DC1) and late sparry dolomite cements (DC2 and DC3), in three Neoproterozoic dolostone profiles from China. The Ediacaran U–Pb ages coupled with nearly identical, low TΔ47 temperatures (average at ca 55‐60°C) for BD and DC1 dolomites, imply that these dolomites were either syn‐depositional or early diagenetic. Some DC1 dolomites yield slightly younger (ca 20 to 50 Ma) U–Pb ages than the BD dolomites, suggesting that they were diagenetic products formed after matrix dolomitization. The estimates of δ18Owater values for dolomitizing fluids suggest that both DC1 and BD dolomites were precipitated from highly evaporated seawater. In contrast, DC2 and DC3 dolomites filling in vugs and fractures have much younger U–Pb ages (mostly <525 Ma), higher TΔ47 temperatures (>95°C), and lower Sr and U contents, which is consistent with the paragenetic sequence that they were deeper burial diagenetic products. A synthesized diagenetic model with evaporative dolomitizing water evolved from anoxic, ferruginous to sub‐oxic and/or oxic, non‐ferruginous conditions is responsible for the decrease of Fe and Mn concentrations in global DC1 and BD dolomites throughout Neoproterozoic time. This study suggests that the widely distributed Neoproterozoic fibrous dolomite cements may be a later diagenetic feature, and thus calls into question their use in palaeoclimate reconstruction and as a principal line of evidence for the Neoproterozoic 'dolomite sea' hypothesis. The Coorong Coastal Plain in the south‐east of South Australia is a series of uplifted and stranded Pleistocene, beach‐dune, aeolianite complexes (Bridgewater Formation) that range in age from Middle Pleistocene to Holocene. Aeolianite ridges are separated by elongated corridors, the sites of interdune sedimentation. The youngest corridors, sites of Holocene lacustrine deposition, are also locations of syndepositional dolomite formation. These lakes, particularly south of the Coorong Lagoon, are world‐famous and extensively studied. The older corridors, by contrast, are poorly understood. This study investigates the numerous corridor sediments and limestones between aeolianites across the coastal plain. There are two formations: (i) the Padthaway Formation, a middle Pleistocene, Marine Isotope Stage 15 to Marine Isotope Stage 2 deposit with three facies; and (ii) the Glanville Formation, a younger late Pleistocene Marine Isotope Stage 5e, unit with one facies containing warm‐water biota that is not present in the area today. These carbonates are interpreted to record deposition in palaeoenvironments ranging from lacustrine to estuarine–lagoonal. There is very little dolomite in the deposits. Aragonite and Mg‐calcite are present and most abundant in corridors younger than 350 ka. There are only seven samples of Padthaway Formation carbonates that contain any dolomite, with only two containing more than 50%. Limestone and dolomite stable isotopes are similar with negative δ13C values (−3.9 to −8.6‰) and variable δ18O numbers (+3.0 to −2.4‰). Such values are quite unlike those for younger synsedimentary dolomites. Mineralogy and geochemistry suggest original low‐magnesium calcite‐rich sediment that has been modified to varying degrees by meteoric diagenesis. Lack of synsedimentary dolomite is ascribed mainly to more humid climatic conditions in the past. The study emphasizes that lacustrine synsedimentary dolomite forms under semi‐arid conditions when lakes, fed by Mg‐rich and Ca‐rich resurging groundwaters and under bacterial mediation, are evaporated to dryness. The sedimentary record of the Pahrump Group in Death Valley comprises well‐exposed successions of mixed carbonate and siliciclastic deposits. Despite the abundance of studies focussing on the depositional dynamics of mixed carbonate – siliciclastic deposition in the Phanerozoic, the record of similar Proterozoic examples is comparatively sparse. Using high‐resolution stratigraphy and microfacies analyses, this study investigates the Tonian Horse Thief Springs Formation within the Pahrump Group of Death Valley, California, in order to propose first‐order constraints on the interplay between carbonate and siliciclastic deposition in the early Neoproterozoic. The mixed successions are unlike many previously studied examples interpreted as being caused by glacio‐eustatic sea‐level changes, thus arguing for a more relevant tectonic influence on siliciclastic deposition. This interpretation is supported by detailed microfacies analyses of siliciclastic‐rich dolostones, which show abundant soft‐sediment deformation features suggesting sudden pulses of sandstone deposition onto a shallow marine carbonate shelf. The Tonian carbonate factory recovered quickly after being smothered by siliciclastics, particularly due to abundant stromatolite growth. A new relationship between siliciclastic input, carbonate fabric diversity, and carbonate preservation is established based on microfacies analyses, putting forward that siliciclastic deposition had a significant impact on the formation and preservation of later‐stage diagenetic dolomite cements, as well as on stromatolite morphology and carbonate fabric diversity within the microbialites. This study shows how repeated siliciclastic incursions had a significant impact on the Proterozoic carbonate factory of the Horse Thief Springs Formation, as well as on diagenetic modification and preservation of shallow marine carbonates, and establishes previously unexplored relationships between carbonate and siliciclastic strata in the Proterozoic. The Coorong Lakes, South Australia, are one of the models for unravelling the 'Dolomite Problem'. Critically, today only a few modern environments remain where large quantities of very high magnesium calcite (VHMC; Ca0.5Mg0.5CO3; also described as protodolomite or disordered dolomite) and magnesite (MgCO3) precipitate. Previously conducted laboratory studies demonstrate that carbonate minerals can precipitate via classical and non‐classical crystallization pathways. This study uses the preserved crystal sizes, morphologies and microstructures of Ca–Mg carbonates in the Coorong Lakes (Milne Lake, Pellet Lake and North Stromatolite Lake) to evaluate which crystallization pathway most likely occurred. In the fine‐grained sediments of these lakes, very high magnesium calcite and magnesite occur as aggregate particles of nanocrystals (<100 nm). Rietveld refinements using X‐ray diffraction data give modelled Lvol–IB crystallite size values of <120 nm for all carbonates. Transmission electron microscopy shows that, within VHMC and magnesite particles, nanocrystals have an almost identical orientation of their crystal lattice fringes. This is morphologically similar to Ca–Mg carbonates formed via an amorphous carbonate precursor in non‐classical crystallization laboratory experiments. Precipitation of carbonate minerals via an amorphous‐to‐crystalline pathway requires the water to be supersaturated relative to both crystalline and amorphous phases. In the Coorong Lakes, surface water likely only becomes supersaturated relative to amorphous carbonate phases in the late summer after extensive evaporation. Observations suggest that VHMC and dolomite do not directly precipitate from bulk modern seawater, despite oversaturation relative to the crystalline phases, because seawater is undersaturated with respect to amorphous calcium magnesium carbonate, thus limiting the precipitation through a non‐classical crystallization pathway. This work evaluates an exceptionally complex natural laboratory, the Middle Triassic Latemar isolated platform in the northern Italian Dolomite Mountains and explores spatial and temporal gradients in processes and products related to contact metamorphism, dolomitization and dedolomitization of marine limestones. The relation between petrographic change and re‐equilibration of geochemical proxy data is evaluated from the perspective of carbonate‐archive research. Hydrothermal dolomitization of the limestone units is triggered by dykes and associated hydrothermal fluids radiating from the nearby Predazzo Intrusion. Detailed petrography, fluid inclusion analysis, δ13C and δ18O data and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios shed light on the extreme textural and geochemical complexity. Metamorphic and diagenetic patterns include: (i) peak‐metamorphic and retrograde‐metamorphic phases including three dolomite marbles, two dedolomite marbles, brucite, magnesium silicates and late‐stage meteoric/vadose cement at the contact aureole; (ii) four spatially defined episodes of dolomitization, authigenic quartz, low magnesium calcite and late‐stage meteoric cement at the Latemar isolated platform; and (iii) kilometre‐scale gradients in δ13C values from the contact aureole towards the platform interior. Results shown here are relevant for two reasons: first, the spatial analysis of alteration products ranging from high‐grade metamorphic overprint of marbles at temperatures of 700°C in the contact aureole to moderately altered limestones in the platform interior at temperatures <100°C, allows the observation of processes that commonly occur along vertical (prograde) gradients from shallow burial to metamorphism at depths >20 km. Second, under rock‐buffered conditions, and irrespective of metamorphic to diagenetic fluid−rock interactions, both marbles, and low‐temperature hydrothermal dolomites have conservative marine δ13C and δ18O values. The fact that metamorphism and hydrothermal dolomitization of precursor limestones and early diagenetic dolostones did not per se reset environmental proxy data is of interest for those concerned with carbonate archive research in Earth's deep time. Glendonites represent pseudomorphs after calcium carbonate hexahydrate (ikaite) and can be used as indicators of past cold climates, because ikaite only naturally occurs in cold environments (<7°C) in the modern. The results of a multi‐proxy study of 11 glendonite and host concretion samples from Palaeogene (Gennoishi Formation) and Neogene (Bora and Vengeri formations) sediments from Sakhalin Island, Russian Far East are reported here. Petrographic, cathodoluminescence, powder X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope analyses reveal that glendonites are composed of several successive mineralogical phases: low‐magnesium ikaite‐derived calcite, high‐magnesium acicular cement (calcite and dolomite) and blocky calcite or authigenic quartz filling the remaining pore space. Host concretions comprise sandy limestones cemented by high‐magnesium calcite. The δ13C and δ18O values for host concretions and enclosed glendonites are very similar, with δ13C ranging from –20.3 to +1.9‰ Vienna Pee‐Dee Belemnite and δ18O ranging from –3.4 to +3.4‰ Vienna Pee‐Dee Belemnite. Such isotopic values suggest that seawater was the main source of oxygen, while dissolved inorganic carbon and decaying organic matter were the main carbon sources for ikaite growth, concretion and glendonite cementation. The 87Sr/86Sr values within the glendonites and host concretions are significantly lower compared with coeval Palaeogene–Neogene marine carbonates, suggesting an influence of continental runoff on their isotopic composition. Post Archean Australian Shale normalized rare earth element patterns display negative Ce anomalies and positive Eu anomalies, with a depletion in light rare earth elements or bulge in middle rare earth elements. Such spectra of rare earth elements indicate that ikaite growth and replacement occurred very close to the aerobic–anaerobic boundary, with pore waters derived from trapped seawater and/or ikaite dehydration. Since Mg/Ca ratios and alkalinity increase with depth below the sediment–water interface, subsequent mineral phases show enrichment in Mg, while the lack of diagenetic alteration by basinal fluids enabled preservation of the primary isotopic and geochemical characteristics of ikaite within the recrystallized pseudomorph. Unconsolidated and lithified terra rossa fills surface depressions, joints, fractures and cavities throughout the karst landscapes on the Cayman Islands. The terra rossa is formed from kaolinite, halloysite, vermiculite, hydrotalcite, böhmite, gibbsite, goethite, hematite, anatase, quartz, calcite, dolomite, halite and X‐ray amorphous material. Locally, phosphate derived from bird guano and biofragments is present. Lithified terra rossa is characterized by numerous generations of fractures that are lined with clay and filled with multiple phases of calcite cement. There are no obvious geographic or stratigraphic differences between the terra rossa found on the three islands. A residual origin for the terra rossa is unlikely given that the Oligocene to Pleistocene limestone/dolostone bedrock contains <1% non‐carbonate material. Detrital sediments cannot be the source because none developed on these islands, given that they are surrounded by deep oceanic waters. The terra rossa probably originated largely from wind‐blown volcanic dust or Saharan dust. Various geochemical ratios and rare earth element profiles indicate that that the Cayman terra rossa has a strong affinity to Saharan dust that is frequently blown into the Caribbean region each year. The Cayman terra rossa is characterized by SiO2/Al2O3 ratios (<1.1) that are significantly lower than those associated with terra rossa on other islands, such as Jamaica and Barbados. The low SiO2/Al2O3 ratios of the Cayman terra rossa is due, at least in part, to the fact that quartz is rare to absent. X‐ray amorphous material is a common component in many of the Cayman samples. Although difficult to date precisely, the formation of terra rossa on the Cayman Islands appears to have been an ongoing process for at least the last 5 Myr. In an effort to constrain the mechanism of dolomitization in Neogene dolomites in the Bahamas and improve understanding of the use of chemostratigraphic tracers in shallow‐water carbonate sediments the δ34S, Δ47, δ13C, δ18O, δ44/40Ca and δ26Mg values and Sr concentrations have been measured in dolomitized intervals from the Clino core, drilled on the margin of Great Bahama Bank and two other cores (Unda and San Salvador) in the Bahamas. The Unda and San Salvador cores have massively dolomitized intervals that have carbonate associated sulphate δ34S values similar to those found in contemporaneous seawater and δ44/40Ca, δ26Mg values, Sr contents and Δ47 temperatures (25 to 30°C) indicating relatively shallow dolomitization in a fluid‐buffered system. In contrast, dolomitized intervals in the Clino core have elevated values of carbonate associated sulphate δ34S values indicating dolomitization in a more sediment‐buffered diagenetic system where bacterial sulphate reduction enriches the residual SO42- in 34S, consistent with high sediment Sr concentrations and low δ44/40Ca and high δ26Mg values. Only dolomites associated with hardgrounds in the Clino core have carbonate associated δ34S values similar to seawater, indicating continuous flushing of the upper layers of the sediment by seawater during sedimentary hiatuses. This interpretation is supported by changes to more positive δ44/40Ca values at hardground surfaces. All dolomites, whether they formed in an open fluid‐buffered or closed sediment‐buffered diagenetic system have similar δ26Mg values suggesting that the HMC transformed to dolomite. The clumped isotope derived temperatures in the dolomitized intervals in Clino yield temperatures that are higher than normal, possibly indicating a kinetic isotope effect on dolomite Δ47 values associated with carbonate formation through bacterial sulphate reduction. The findings of this study highlight the utility of applying multiple geochemical proxies to disentangle the diagenetic history of shallow‐water carbonate sediments and caution against simple interpretations of stratigraphic variability in these geochemical proxies as indicating changes in the global geochemical cycling of these elements in seawater. In past decades, the formation of dolomite at low temperature has been widely studied in both natural systems and cultured experiments, yet the mechanism(s) involved in the nucleation and precipitation of dolomite remains unresolved. Late Eocene dolomitic deposits from core in the upper Niubao Formation (Lunpola Basin, central Tibetan Plateau, China) are selected as a case study to understand the dolomitization process(es) in the geological record. Dolomite formation in Lunpola Basin can be ascribed to a different mechanism forming the large quantities of replacive dolostones in the geological record; and provides a potential fossil analogue for primary dolomite precipitation at low temperature. This analogue consists of an alternation of laminated dolomitic beds, organic‐rich and siliciclastic layers; formed in response to intense evaporation interpreted to take place in a continental shallow lake environment. Mineralogical, textural and stable isotopic evaluations suggest that the dolomite from those dense‐clotted laminated beds is a primary precipitate. At the nanoscale, these dolomitic beds are composed of Ca–Mg carbonate globular nanocrystals (diameter 80 to 100 nm) embedded in an organic matrix and attached to clay flakes. Micro‐infrared spectroscopy analyses have revealed the presence of aliphatic compounds in the organic matrix. Microscopic and elemental compositional studies suggest that clay surfaces may facilitate the nucleation of dolomite at low temperature in the same way as the organic matrix does. The dolomite laminae show values for δ18OVPDB from −3.2 to −1.76‰ and for δ13CVPDB from −2.62 to −3.78‰. Inferred δ18OSMOW values of the lake water reveal typical evaporitic hydrological conditions. These findings provide a potential link to primary dolomite formation in ancient and modern sedimentary environments; and shed new light on the palaeoenvironmental conditions in central Tibet during the Eocene. Fault‐controlled hydrothermal dolomitization in tectonically complex basins can occur at any depth and from different fluid compositions, including 'deep‐seated', 'crustal' or 'basinal' brines. Nevertheless, many studies have failed to identify the actual source of these fluids, resulting in a gap in our knowledge on the likely source of magnesium of hydrothermal dolomitization. With development of new concepts in hydrothermal dolomitization, the study aims in particular to test the hypothesis that dolomitizing fluids were sourced from either seawater, ultramafic carbonation or a mixture between the two by utilizing the Cambrian Mount Whyte Formation as an example. Here, the large‐scale dolostone bodies are fabric‐destructive with a range of crystal fabrics, including euhedral replacement (RD1) and anhedral replacement (RD2). Since dolomite is cross‐cut by low amplitude stylolites, dolomitization is interpreted to have occurred shortly after deposition, at a very shallow depth (<1 km). At this time, there would have been sufficient porosity in the mudstones for extensive dolomitization to occur, and the necessary high heat flows and faulting associated with Cambrian rifting to transfer hot brines into the near surface. While the δ18Owater and 87Sr/86Sr ratios values of RD1 are comparable with Cambrian seawater, RD2 shows higher values in both parameters. Therefore, although aspects of the fluid geochemistry are consistent with dolomitization from seawater, very high fluid temperature and salinity could be suggestive of mixing with another, hydrothermal fluid. The very hot temperature, positive Eu anomaly, enriched metal concentrations, and cogenetic relation with quartz could indicate that hot brines were at least partially sourced from ultramafic rocks, potentially as a result of interaction between the underlying Proterozoic serpentinites and CO2‐rich fluids. This study highlights that large‐scale hydrothermal dolostone bodies can form at shallow burial depths via mixing during fluid pulses, providing a potential explanation for the mass balance problem often associated with their genesis. The upper Palaeocene–lower Eocene Umm er Radhuma Formation in the subsurface of Qatar is dominated by subtidal carbonate depositional packages overlain by bedded evaporites. In Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, peritidal carbonate depositional sequences with intercalated evaporites and carbonates in Umm er Radhuma have been previously interpreted to have been dolomitized via downward reflux of hypersaline brines. Here, textural, mineralogical and geochemical data from three research cores in Qatar are presented which, in contrast, are more consistent with dolomitization by near‐normal marine fluids. Petrographic relationships support a paragenetic sequence whereby dolomitization occurred prior to the formation of all other diagenetic mineral phases, including chert, pyrite, palygorskite, gypsum, calcite and chalcedony, which suggests that dolomitization occurred very early. The dolomites occur as finely crystalline mimetic dolomites, relatively coarse planar‐e dolomites, and coarser nonplanar dolomites, all of which are near‐stoichiometric (50.3 mol% MgCO3) and well‐ordered (0.73). The dolomite stable isotope values (range −2.5‰ to +1‰; mean δ18O = −0.52‰) and trace element concentrations (Sr = 40 to 150 ppm and Na = 100 to 600 ppm) are compatible with dolomitization by near‐normal seawater or mesohaline fluids. Comparisons between δ18O values from Umm er Radhuma dolomite and the overlying Rus Formation gypsum further suggest that dolomitization did not occur in fluids related to Rus evaporites. This study provides an example of early dolomitization of evaporite‐related carbonates by near‐normal seawater rather than by refluxing hypersaline brines from overlying bedded evaporites. During the Cretaceous, high global sea‐level and low latitudinal temperature variations led to the growth of epeiric carbonate platforms. Platform‐scale dolomitization of these platforms is not common, reflecting the low Mg/Ca ratio of seawater and a humid climate. This study describes the processes governing pervasive dolomitization of a land‐attached carbonate platform within the Iberian Basin. Dolomite is planar to sub‐planar with a geochemical signature consistent with dolomitization from penesaline seawater. Dolomitization was most pervasive during a 1 Myr period in the middle Cenomanian, by repeated reflux of seawater from brine pools formed on the top of a southward‐prograding carbonate platform. Tilting and structural reorganization in the Upper Cenomanian led to a reversal in polarity of the platform, and dolomitization was restarted by the northward reflux of seawater. Rising relative sea‐level and oceanic acidification led to back‐stepping of the platform such that the supply of dolomitizing fluids was cut off. In the Lower Turonian, pervasively dolomitized rudist rudstone facies in the south of the study area indicate that dolomitization restarted, either penecontemporaneously or later, from highly evaporated Campanian–Maastrichtian seawater. A systematic increase in dolomite crystal size up‐section ties broadly, but not entirely, to stratigraphy. It is possible that these textural differences reflect changes in fluid chemistry, limestone permeability or precursor rock texture. However, the lack of stratigraphic conformance, and the preservation of the earliest‐formed dolomite only in the oldest sediments, could indicate a progressive recrystallization of early‐formed dolomite through repeated reflux of brines. As such, the succession appears to preserve a fossilized record of dolomite recrystallization through time during the Cenomanian–Turonian. The results of this study therefore provide a record of the progressive dolomitization of a carbonate platform and demonstrate the important interplay of climate and basin‐scale tectonics on dolomite distribution and crystallinity. Authigenic clays are an important control on reservoir quality in lacustrine carbonates but remain challenging to predict. Lacustrine depositional systems respond to climatic variations in rainfall, surface runoff and groundwater input, and evaporation, and result in rapid and frequent changes in lake volume; this is expressed through changing water depth and shoreline position. In the upper portion of the Early Palaeocene Yacoraite Formation of the Salta Basin in Argentina, extensive lacustrine deposits were deposited during the sag phase of rifting. Prior high‐resolution stratigraphic studies have suggested that climatic factors control microbial carbonate sequences within a 'balanced fill' lake, with variation in the lake level having a major influence on facies association changes. This study characterizes the evolution of facies and mineralogy within the Yacoraite Formation, focusing on the distribution of clay minerals, making a link between the high, medium and low‐frequency sequence stratigraphic cycles. The low‐frequency transgressive hemicycle of the upper portion of the Yacoraite Formation is comprised of abundant siliciclastic facies, suggesting a wetter period. Microbialites occurring in this interval are coarse‐grained and agglutinated. Detrital clay minerals such as illite and chlorite and associated siliciclastic sediments were input to the lake during high‐frequency transgressive periods. During high‐frequency regressive hemicycles, sedimentation was dominated by carbonate facies with Ca‐rich dolomite and the authigenic clays are comprised of chlorite/smectite mixed‐layers. By contrast, the low frequency regressive hemicycle records fine‐grained agglutinated microbialite with horizons of fibrous calcite, more stoichiometric dolomite, barite and authigenic magnesian smectite. This indicates elevated ion concentrations in the lake under intense evaporation during an arid period. Understanding the conditions that are favourable for formation and preservation of authigenic clays within the lacustrine environment can improve understanding of reservoir quality in comparable economically important deposits. Neoproterozoic marine dolomite cements represent reliable, albeit complex, archives of their palaeoenvironment. Petrological and high‐resolution geochemical data from well‐preserved fibrous dolomite and pyrite in the upper Ediacaran (ca 551·1 to 548·0 Ma) Dengying Formation in south‐west China are presented and discussed here. The aim of this research is to reconstruct the redox state of late Ediacaran shallow seawater and porewater in the Sichuan Basin using early marine diagenetic fabrics. Based on crystalline texture and axis, four basic types of fibrous dolomite cements formed penecontemporaneously in a microbialite reef setting at the platform margin: (i) bladed dolomites (replacement from a high‐Mg calcite precursor); (ii) fascicular fast dolomites (replacement from an aragonitic precursor); (iii) fascicular slow dolomites; and (iv) radial slow dolomites. The latter two fabrics are considered direct marine porewater precipitates due to their length‐slow character, cathodoluminescent zonation, and enriched copper and cobalt concentrations. Marine cements yield rare earth element and yttrium patterns comparable to modern seawater and represent a refined set of archive data relative to previously published bulk dolostones. Redox‐sensitive elements and cathodoluminescence indicate that the fascicular fast dolomites formed in suboxic seawater, while fascicular slow and radial slow dolomites formed in euxinic marine porewaters. Microbial sulphate reduction during the formation of fascicular slow and radial slow dolomites is recognized by nanometre‐scale spheroidal ankerite and sulphur‐containing dolomite, and intergrown pyrite grains with U‐shaped δ34S transects. Data shown here suggest predominantly suboxic shallow late Ediacaran seawater and euxinic marine porewaters, with microbial activity promoting the direct precipitation of dolomite. Early marine diagenetic dolomite is a rather thermodynamically‐stable carbonate phase and has potential to act as an archive of marine porewater properties. However, the variety of early to late diagenetic dolomite phases that can coexist within a single sample can result in extensive complexity. Here, the archive potential of early marine dolomites exposed to extreme post‐depositional processes is tested using various types of analyses, including: petrography, fluid inclusion data, stable δ13C and δ18O isotopes, 87Sr/86Sr ratios, and U‐Pb age dating of various dolomite phases. In this example, a Triassic carbonate platform was dissected and overprinted (diagenetic temperatures of 50 to 430°C) in a strike‐slip zone in Southern Spain. Eight episodes of dolomitization, a dolostone cataclasite and late stage meteoric/vadose cementation were recognized. The following processes were found to be diagenetically relevant: (i) protolith deposition and fabric‐preservation, and marine dolomitization of precursor aragonite and calcite during the Middle–Late Triassic; (ii) intermediate burial and formation of zebra saddle dolomite and precipitation of various dolomite cements in a Proto‐Atlantic opening stress regime (T ca 250°C) during the Early–Middle Jurassic; (iii) dolomite cement precipitation during early Alpine tectonism, rapid burial to ca 15 km, and high‐grade anchizone overprint during Alpine tectonic evolution in the Early Eocene to Early Miocene; (iv) brecciation of dolostones to cataclasite during the onset of the Carboneras Fault Zone activity during the Middle Miocene; and (v) late‐stage regression and subsequent meteoric overprint. Data shown here document that, under favourable conditions, early diagenetic marine dolomites and their archive data may resist petrographic and geochemical resetting over time intervals of 108 or more years. Evidence for this preservation includes preserved Late Triassic seawater δ13CDIC values and primary fluid inclusion data. Dolomites occur extensively in the lower Cretaceous along syn‐sedimentary fault zones of the Baiyinchagan Sag, westernmost Erlian Basin, within a predominantly fluvial–lacustrine sedimentary sequence. Four types of dolomite are identified, associated with hydrothermal minerals such as natrolite, analcime and Fe‐bearing magnesite. The finely‐crystalline dolomites consist of anhedral to subhedral crystals (2 to 10 μm), evenly commixed with terrigenous sediments that occur either as matrix‐supporting grains (Fd1) or as massive argillaceous dolostone (Fd2). Medium‐crystalline (Md) dolomites are composed of subhedral to euhedral crystals aggregates (50 to 250 μm) and occur in syn‐sedimentary deformation laminae/bands. Coarse‐crystalline (Cd) dolomites consist of non‐planar crystals (mean size >1 mm), and occur as fracture infills cross‐cutting the other dolomite types. The Fd1, Md and Cd dolomites have similar values of δ18O (−20·5 to −11·0‰ Vienna PeeDee Belemnite) and δ13C (+1·4 to +4·5‰ Vienna PeeDee Belemnite), but Fd2 dolomites are isotopically distinct (δ18O −8·5 to −2·3‰ Vienna PeeDee Belemnite; δ13C +1·4 to +8·6‰ Vienna PeeDee Belemnite). Samples define three groups which differ in light rare‐earth elements versus high rare‐earth elements enrichment/depletion and significance of Tb, Yb and Dy anomalies. Medium‐crystalline dolomites have signatures that indicate formation from brines at very high temperature, with salinities of 11·8 to 23·2 eq. wt. % NaCl and Th values of 167 to 283°C. The calculated temperatures of Fd1 and Cd dolomites extend to slightly lower values (141 to 282°C), while Fd2 dolomites are distinctly cooler (81 to 124°C). These results suggest that the dolomites formed from hydrothermal fluid during and/or penecontemporaneous with sediment deposition. Faults and fractures bounding the basin were important conduits through which high‐temperature Mg‐rich fluids discharged, driven by an abnormally high heat flux associated with local volcanism. It is thought that differing amounts of cooling and degassing of these hydrothermal fluids, and of mixing with lake waters, facilitated the precipitation of dolomite and associated minerals, and resulted in the petrographic and geochemical differences between the dolomites. Reaction‐transport modelling shows that a lateral, metre‐scale pattern in dolomite abundance can form during replacive dolomitization of calcite and aragonite precursors by Mississippian, Triassic and modern seawaters advecting at >20 cm year−1 in low temperature (≤60°C) hydrogeological systems. The modelled pattern develops best in beds >1 m thick with a relatively uniform nucleate density and a low variance in reactive surface area (for example, grainstones). These conditions suggest that a lateral pattern in dolomite abundance should be expected in dolomites formed by any shallow hydrodynamic system that advects dolomitizing fluid horizontally, including the down‐gradient portion of a reflux system, the oceanward reaches of geothermal (Kohout) convection systems, and the seaward reaches of a seawater entrainment zone below a freshwater aquifer. However, even in those systems, a pattern will not form in all dolomites. Pattern will be muted in thinner (≤ ca 50 cm thick) beds and non‐emergent where the precursor had a high variance in reactive surface area (for example, a skeletal wackestone) and/or large variation in nucleate density. Pattern also did not form at temperatures above ca 60°C, which implies that pattern should not be expected in dolomites formed at intermediate to deep burial depths. As the patterns are horizontal, they also should not be expected where dolomitizing fluids moved vertically (for example, reflux immediately below a brine source). Pattern metrics (short‐range correlation length, and wavelength and amplitude of the longer cyclic component) vary with flow rate, fluid chemistry, bed thickness, porosity, grain size, temperature and the flow complexity (one‐dimensional, two‐dimensional or three‐dimensional) within the bed. However, no modelled pattern produced metrics larger than those documented on dolomite outcrops. The results thus constrain the length scales of porosity and permeability variance to include in petrophysical models of dolomite reservoirs, as well as the geological scenarios in which to consider metre‐scale lateral petrophysical variability. Speleothems, mostly composed of calcium carbonate, are widely present in modern karst‐originated caves, but have rarely been reported in palaeokarst systems. This study presents a novel type of dolomite speleothem and subsequent submarine dolomite cement, which are widely present in the upper Ediacaran Dengying Formation in the upper Yangtze area. These precipitated materials occur in the cavity system that cuts across several peritidal cycles. The interconnected cavity networks with irregular shapes, embayed walls, internal breccias on cavity floor and their preferential development in the shallower cycle tops (for example, tepee‐deformed beds) suggest that they were initially generated by subaerial dissolution. As the earliest infills, the hemispherical protrusions, icicle‐like pendants and ground‐up columns show similar morphological features and occurrence patterns to the cave popcorn, stalactites and stalagmites, respectively. Thus, these earliest infills are speleothems resulting from associated meteoric precipitation during subaerial exposure. The isopachous growth pattern of subsequent more extensive fibrous dolomite cements points to a submarine diagenetic environment in which they were precipitated. Microscopically, the micritic to micro‐crystalline dolomite, acicular dolomite in speleothems and the subsequent fibrous dolomite share similar crystal fabrics to metastable precursors (for example, Mg‐calcite). Meanwhile, the carbon‐oxygen isotope compositions of the speleothem and fibrous dolomite, although partly altered by burial diagenesis, share a large overlap with host rock and coeval marine carbonates all over the Yangtze Platform. For these reasons, these speleothems and fibrous cements are considered to have been initially precipitated as metastable carbonate precursors in meteoric and submarine environments, respectively, and stabilized during submarine mimetic dolomitization. The cyclic occurrence of cavity systems filled with speleothems and submarine cements reflects periodic subaerial exposure and marine flooding of broad tidal flat in the upper Yangtze area, driven by high‐frequency sea‐level fluctuations. Furthermore, the Neoproterozoic seawater chemistry that favoured early dolomitization of carbonate precursor mineralogies was an advantage for the preservation of fabrics from metastable precursor minerals. Palygorskite is a fibrous, magnesium‐bearing clay mineral commonly associated with Late Mesozoic and Early Cenozoic dolomites. The presence of palygorskite is thought to be indicative of warm, alkaline fluids rich in Si, Al and Mg. Palygorskite has been interpreted to form in peritidal diagenetic environments, either as a replacement of detrital smectite clay during a dissolution–precipitation reaction or solid‐state transformation, or as a direct precipitate from solution. Despite a lack of evidence, most diagenetic studies involving these two minerals posit that dolomite and palygorskite form concurrently. Here, petrological evidence is presented from the Umm er Radhuma Formation (Palaeocene–Eocene) in the subsurface of central Qatar for an alternative pathway for palygorskite formation. The Umm er Radhuma is comprised of dolomitized subtidal to peritidal carbonate cycles that are commonly capped by centimetre‐scale beds rich in palygorskite. Thin section, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analyses demonstrate that palygorskite fibres formed on both the outermost surfaces of dissolved euhedral dolomite crystals and within partially to completely dissolved dolomite crystal cores. These observations suggest that dolomite and palygorskite formed sequentially, and support a model by which the release of Mg2+ ions and the buffering of solution pH during dolomite dissolution promote the formation of palygorskite. This new diagenetic model explains the co‐occurrence of palygorskite and dolomite in the rock record, and provides valuable insight into the specific diagenetic conditions under which these minerals may form. Abstract: Cenozoic ‘island dolostones’ are found on islands throughout the oceans of the world. Due to their geological youth and lack of deep burial, these dolostones provide an opportunity to resolve some of the mysteries surrounding the dolomite problem. In island dolostone bodies, which are of variable size and variable dolomitization, the petrographic and geochemical properties of the dolostones are characterized by geographic and stratigraphic variations. In the larger island‐wide dolostone bodies, like those found on Grand Cayman, there are progressive increases in mole %Ca (%Camean: 53·9 to 57·6%), depletion of the heavier 18O and 13C isotopes (δ18Omean: 3·6 to 2·1‰ VPDB; δ13Cmean: 3·1 to 1·4‰ VPDB), and changes from fabric‐retentive to fabric‐destructive fabrics and a decrease in the amount of dolomite cement from the coastal areas towards the centres of the islands, similar to the Little Bahama Bank. These changes define geographically concentric zones that parallel the coastlines and reflect geochemical modification of the dolomitizing fluid through water–rock interactions, mixing with meteoric water and the changes in the rate and flux of seawater as it flowed from coasts to island interiors. The pattern of dolomitization, however, is not consistent from island to island because geographic and stratigraphic variations, specific to each island, influenced groundwater flow pattern (for example, geometry and size of the islands; the porosity and permeability of the precursor limestone), the duration of the dolomitization reaction, and other factors. The geographic extent of dolomitization and variation in dolomite stoichiometry of island dolostones may be comparable to the reaction stages established in high‐temperature laboratory experiments. Abstract: Dolomitization is commonly associated with crustal‐scale faults, but tectonic rejuvenation, diagenetic overprinting and a fluid and Mg mass‐imbalance often makes it difficult to determine the dolomitization mechanism. This study considers differential dolomitization of the Eocene Thebes Formation on the Hammam Faraun Fault block, Gulf of Suez, which has undergone a simple history of burial and exhumation as a result of rifting. Stratabound dolostone bodies occur selectively within remobilized sediments (debrites and turbidites) in the lower Thebes Formation and extend into the footwall of, and for up to 2 km away from, the Hammam Faraun Fault. They are offset by the north–south trending Gebel fault, which was active during the earliest phases of rifting, suggesting that dolomitization occurred between rift initiation (26 Ma) and rift climax (15 Ma). Geochemical data suggest that dolomitization occurred from evaporated (ca 1·43 concentration) seawater at less than ca 80°C. Geothermal convection is interpreted to have occurred as seawater was drawn down surface‐breaching faults into the Nubian sandstone aquifer, convected and discharged into the lower Thebes Formation via the Hammam Faraun Fault. Assuming a ca 10 Myr window for dolomitization, a horizontal velocity of ca 0·7 m year−1 into the Thebes Formation is calculated, with fluid flux and reactivity likely to have been facilitated by fracturing. Although fluids were at least marginally hydrothermal, stratabound dolostone bodies do not contain saddle dolomite and there is no evidence of hydrobrecciation. This highlights how misleading dolostone textures can be as a proxy for the genesis and spatial distribution of such bodies in the subsurface. Overall, this study provides an excellent example of how fluid flux may occur during the earliest phases of rifting, and the importance of crustal‐scale faults on fluid flow from the onset of their growth. Furthermore, this article presents a mechanism for dolomitization from seawater that has none of the inherent mass balance problems of classical, conceptual models of hydrothermal dolomitization. Abstract: Dedolomitization is a common diagenetic process in shallow burial environments and is often associated with sulphates in mixed carbonate‐evaporite successions. In these settings, elevated Ca2+/Mg2+ ratios necessary for dedolomitization result from the dissolution of sulphate phases by the incursion of undersaturated groundwater. Reported dedolomite textures from other studies are varied, but the most prevalent is a rhombic texture interpreted to result from the partial to complete pseudomorphic replacement of secondary dolomite rhombs formed in the burial diagenetic realm. In this study of primary cryptocrystalline to finely crystalline dolomicrites in the Prairie Evaporite Formation of north‐eastern Alberta, dedolomitization has resulted in sutured to loosely packed mosaics of dedolomite that range from subhedral to distinctly euhedral (rhombic) crystal fabrics; however, no prior aggrading neomorphism producing dolomite rhombs is evident in the precursor dolomicrites. Non‐pseudomorphic dedolomitization of the dolomicrites results in textures that include rhombic dedolomite crystals with cloudy cores comprising remnant dolomicrite and clear rims. These textures are similar to those observed in the pseudomorphic dedolomitization of secondary dolomite rhombs. The Prairie Evaporite Formation of north‐eastern Alberta has experienced extensive karstification near the erosional margin of the sedimentary succession. Dedolomitization of dolomicrites occurs in marker beds within the Prairie Evaporite succession associated with evaporite karstification. Along with stratigraphic and petrographic considerations, stable isotope results support the interpretation of a shallow dedolomitization event influenced by meteoric waters derived from the basin margin. Negative δ18O and low δ13C values (averages of −13·6‰VPDB and 0·5‰VPDB, respectively) of the dedolomite, compared with those of the primary dolomicrite (averages of −6·0‰VPDB and 1·2‰VPDB, respectively), point to isotopically light diagenetic fluids. These results show that rhombic dedolomite textures can form through shallow, non‐pseudomorphic dedolomitization of dolomicrites by meteoric fluids in the presence of sulphates, with resulting textures that are similar to the pseudomorphic dedolomitization of secondary dolomite rhombs. Dolomites of varied ages exhibit metre-scale nested patterns of lateral periodic variation in permeability and porosity and, by inference, dolomite abundance as most examples are 100% dolomite. Two-dimensional reaction-transport modelling simulations of bed-scale dolomitization were used to assess whether those patterns in dolomite abundance could form during near-surface replacement dolomitization. Simulations used a 2 m high and 18 m long model domain, a low-Mg calcite grainstone precursor and an evaporated Mississippian seawater brine (430 parts per thousand salinity) as the dolomitizing fluid. The domain was initially populated with random variations in porosity and/or grain size. Results reveal that spatial patterns in dolomite abundance emerge when there is as little as 1% dolomite formed, with similarities between the modelled patterns and outcrop-documented patterns. The nested patterns include a near-random component that constitutes ≤40% of the total variance, short-range correlation ranging from 1·5 to 3·3 m and a longer-range periodic trend with a wavelength up to 6·5 m. The emergence of pattern in dolomite abundance is the result of an autogenic self-organizing phenomenon. It is triggered by variation in initial calcite reactive surface area that occurs due to the random heterogeneities in initial porosity and/or grain sizes. The pattern develops due to a combination of kinetic disequilibrium reactions (dolomite precipitation and calcite dissolution) and positive feedbacks between dolomite growth, calcite dissolution and fluid flow. Flow is around loci of higher dolomite, lower porosity and higher reactive surface areas, but through loci of lower dolomite, higher porosity and lower reactive surface areas. The resulting less porous/more dolomite and more porous/less dolomite structures at the metre-scale arise from those localized interactions. This self-organizing mechanism for pattern formation constitutes a new model for geochemical self-organization during dolomitization and is the only self-organization model that is proven applicable to the formation of metre-scale patterns during early, near-surface dolomitization. The Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous platform-slope to basinal carbonate strata cropping out in Gargano Promontory (southern Italy) are partly dolomitized. Fieldwork and laboratory analyses (petrographic, petrophysical and geochemical) allowed the characterization of the dolomite bodies with respect to their distribution within the carbonate succession, their dimensions, geometries, textural variability, chemical stability, age, porosity, genetic mechanisms and relation with tectonics. The dolomite bodies range from metres to kilometres in size, are fault-related and fracture-related, and probably formed during the Early Cretaceous at <500 m burial depths and temperatures <50°C. The proposed dolomitization model relies on mobilization of Early Cretaceous seawater that flowed, downward and then upward, along faults and fractures and was modified in its isotopic composition moving through Triassic and Jurassic strata that underlie the studied dolomitized succession. Despite the numerous cases reported in literature, this study demonstrates that hydrothermal and/or high-temperature fluids are not necessarily required for fault-controlled dolomitization. Distribution and geometries of dolomite bodies can be used for palaeotectonic reconstructions, as they partly record the characteristics (size, attitude and kinematics) of the palaeo-faults, even if not preserved, that controlled dolomitization. In Gargano Promontory, dolomites record Early Cretaceous palaeo-faults from metres to kilometres long, striking north-west/south-east to east/west and characterized by normal to strike-slip kinematics. Dolomitization increases the matrix porosity by up to 7% and, therefore, can improve the geofluid storage capacity of tight, platform-slope to basinal limestones. The results have a great significance for characterization of geofluid (for example, hydrocarbons) reservoirs hosted in similar dolomitized carbonate successions. Distribution, size and shapes of reservoir rocks (i.e. dolomite bodies) could be broadly predictable if the characteristics of the palaeo-fault system present at the time of dolomitization are known. Cambrian dolostone reservoirs in the Tarim Basin, China, have significant potential for future discoveries of petroleum, although exploration and production planning is hampered by limited understanding of the occurrence and distribution of dolomite in such ancient rocks buried to nearly 8 km. The study herein accessed new drill core samples which provide an opportunity to understand the dolomitization process in deep basins and its impact on Cambrian carbonate reservoirs. This study documents the origin of the dolostone reservoirs using a combination of petrology, fluid-inclusion microthermometry, and stable and radiogenic-isotopes of outcrop and core samples. An initial microbial dolomitization event occurred in restricted lagoon environments and is characterized by depleted δ13C values. Dolomicrite from lagoonal and sabkha facies, some fabric-retentive dolomite and fabric-obliterative dolomite in the peloidal shoal and reef facies show the highest δ18O values. These dolomites represent relatively early reflux dolomitization. The local occurrence of K-feldspar in dolomicrite indicates that some radiogenic strontium was contributed via terrigenous input. Most fabric-retentive dolomite may have precipitated from seawater at slightly elevated temperatures, suggested by petrological and isotopic data. Most fabric-obliterative dolomite, and medium to coarse dolomite cement, formed between 90°C and 130°C from marine evaporitic brine. Saddle dolomite formed by hydrothermal dolomitization at temperatures up to 170°C, and involved the mixing of connate brines with Sr- enriched hydrothermal fluids. Intercrystalline, moldic, and breccia porosities are due to the early stages of dolomitization. Macroscopic, intergranular, vuggy, fracture and dissolution porosity are due to burial-related dissolution and regional hydrothermal events. This work has shown that old (for example, Cambrian or even Precambrian) sucrosic dolomite with associated anhydrite, buried to as much as 8000 m, can still have a high potential for hosting substantial hydrocarbon resources and should be globally targeted for future exploration. Using the clumped isotope method, the temperature of dolomite and calcite formation and the oxygen isotopic composition (δ18Ow) of the diagenetic fluids have been determined in a core taken from the Arab-D of the Ghawar field, the largest oil reservoir in the world. These analyses show that while the dolomites and limestones throughout the major zones of the reservoir recrystallized at temperatures between ca 80°C and 100°C, the carbonates near the top of the reservoir formed at significantly lower temperatures (20 to 30°C). Although the δ18O values of the diagenetic fluids show large variations ranging from ca <0‰ to ca +8‰, the variations exhibit consistent downhole changes, with the highest values being associated with the portion of the reservoir with the highest permeability and porosity. Within the limestones, dolomites and dolomites associated with the zone of high permeability, there are statistically significant different trends between the δ18Ow values and recrystallization temperature. These relationships have different intercepts suggesting that fluids with varying δ18Ow values were involved in the formation of dolomite and limestone compared to the formation of dolomite associated with the zone of high permeability. These new data obtained using the clumped isotope technique show how dolomitization and recrystallization by deep-seated brines with elevated δ18Ow values influence the δ18O values of carbonates, possibly leading to erroneous interpretations unless temperatures can be adequately constrained. Dolomitization often plays a critical role in the pore network development of platform carbonates, with implications for reservoir quality distribution. Understanding both the hydrological system driving dolomitization and the chemistry of the fluids involved is fundamental to constrain predictions of the geometry and the petrophysical properties of dolomite bodies. Here, the role of secular variations in seawater Mg/Ca as a control on dolomitization and early porosity modification was evaluated using one-dimensional reactive transport models and fluids based on modern (aragonite sea), Mississippian and Aptian (calcite sea) seawaters. The sensitivity of dolomitization to a range of extrinsic controls (brine salinity, temperature, fluid flow rate and pCO2) and to intrinsic reactivity of the sediments (effective reactive surface area) was also explored. Simulations suggest faster calcite replacement by dolomite for seawaters with higher Mg/Ca, indicating that dolomitization potential is determined more by Mg/Ca rather than saturation index. Increasing evaporative concentration enhances reaction rate independent of the effect of enhanced density-driven fluid flux. In addition to brine composition, effective surface area of precursor sediments and temperature exert a critical control on replacement rate, while secular variations of pH and carbonate alkalinity associated with changes in pCO2 are only secondary controls. Above flow rates of 0·01 m yr−1 replacive dolomitization is reaction-limited rather than flux limited, favouring alteration of fine-grained carbonates and suggesting that preferential alteration of grainstone units is rare unless head gradients are low. Post-replacement dolomite cementation is flux dependent, and thus favoured in areas of high head gradient and high permeability sediments and, contrary to replacement, supersaturation is a more important driver than Mg/Ca. While uncertainties remain regarding low-temperature dolomitization kinetics, the capability of numerical simulations to decouple individual controls provides new insights which can be used, in conjunction with traditional comparative sedimentology, to generate more rigorous conceptual models for individual reservoir settings. Stable carbon and oxygen isotopes (δ18O and δ13C values) and trace elements have been applied to the study of diagenesis of carbonate rocks for over 50 years. As valuable as these insights have been, many problems regarding the interpretation of geochemical signals within mature rocks remain. For example, while the δ18O values of carbonate rocks are dependent both upon the temperature and the δ18O value of the fluid, and additional information including trace element composition aids in interpreting such signals, direct evidence of either the temperature or the composition of the fluids is required. Such information can be obtained by analysing the δ18O value of any fluid inclusions or by measuring the temperature using a method such as the 'clumped' isotope technique. Such data speak directly to a large number of problems in interpreting the oxygen isotope record including the well-known tendency for δ18O values of carbonate rocks to decrease with increasing age. Unlike the δ18O, δ13C values of carbonates are considered to be less influenced by diagenesis and more a reflection of primary changes in the global carbon cycle through time. However, many studies have not sufficiently emphasized the effects of diagenesis and other post-depositional influences on the eventual carbon isotopic composition of the rock with the classic paradigm that the present is the key to the past being frequently ignored. Finally, many additional proxies are poised to contribute to the interpretation of carbonate diagenesis. Although the study of carbonate diagenesis is at an exciting point with an explosion of new proxies and methods, care should be taken to understand both old and new proxies before applying them to the ancient record. Viséan limestones on the Isle of Man host numerous examples of fault-controlled and fracture-controlled dolomitization, which have been investigated to determine their macro-scale to micro-scale characteristics, geofluid origin, timing and relation to basin evolution. Geobodies composed of fabric destructive, ferroan, non-planar dolomite range from several centimetres to >300 m wide and tens to hundreds of metres long parallel to faults and/or fractures; they have sharply defined margins, cross-cut stratigraphy and locally finger out along beds or bed boundaries for tens of metres. Larger geobodies accompany NNE- SSW extensional faults with substantial breccia zones. One of these bodies hosts a sphalerite-rich breccia deposit cemented by dolomite. Saddle dolomite lines or fills vugs and fractures within dolomite geobodies, and is a minor late diagenetic phase in undolomitized limestones. Replacive dolomite has low matrix porosity owing to non-planar texture and associated cementation, and there is no evidence for subsequent leaching. Three dolomite stages are discriminated by texture, cathodoluminescence petrography and electron microscopy. Disseminated 'Dolomite 1' is substantially replaced and may be residual early diagenetic dolomite. Pervasive 'Dolomite 2' and 'Dolomite 3' have overlapping carbon-oxygen-strontium isotopic and fluid-inclusion characteristics that indicate precipitation from allochthonous, high-temperature (98 to 223°C) and high-salinity (15 to 24 wt% NaCl eq.) brines. These variably equilibrated with host limestones and mixed with resident pore fluids. Overlying mudrocks formed a seal for ascending fluids. Integration of data from the mineral deposit suggests that fault-fracture systems tapped different deep-seated fluid reservoirs at different temperatures, and implies fluid interactions with both metamorphic basement and sedimentary cover in large-scale circulation systems. This phenomenon probably took place during Mesozoic rifting, although an earlier event at the end of the Early Carboniferous cannot be discounted. The possibility of recrystallization is a long-standing barrier to deciphering the genetic origin of dolomites. There is often uncertainty regarding whether or not characteristics of ancient dolomites are primary or the consequence of later recrystallization unrelated to the original dolomitization event. Results from 65 new high-temperature dolomite synthesis experiments (1 m, 1·0 Mg/Ca ratio solutions at 218°C) demonstrate dolomite recrystallization affecting stoichiometry, cation ordering and nanometre-scale surface texture. The data support a model of dolomitization that proceeds by a series of four unique phases of replacement and recrystallization, which occur by various dissolution-precipitation reactions. During the first phase ( induction period), no dolomite forms despite favourable conditions. The second phase ( replacement period) occurs when Ca-rich dolomite products, with a low degree of cation ordering, rapidly replace calcite reactants. During the replacement period, dolomite stoichiometry and the degree of cation ordering remain constant, and all dolomite crystal surfaces are covered by nanometre-scale growth mounds. The third phase ( primary recrystallization period), which occurs in the experiments between 97% and 100% dolomite, is characterized by a reduced replacement rate but concurrent increases in dolomite stoichiometry and cation ordering. The end of the primary recrystallization period is marked by dolomite crystal growth surfaces that are covered by flat, laterally extensive layers. The fourth phase of the reaction ( secondary recrystallization period) occurs when all calcite is consumed and is characterized by stoichiometric dolomite with layers as well as a continued increase in the degree of cation ordering with time. Inferences of recrystallization, in natural dolomite, based on cation order or stoichiometry of dolomite, usually depend on assumptions about the precursor dolomite subjected to recrystallization. If it is assumed that the experimental evidence presented here is applicable to natural, low-temperature dolomites, then the presence of mounds is direct evidence of a lack of recrystallization and the presence of layers is direct evidence of recrystallization.
