Numerous studies have suggested that the hemoglobin-to-red blood cell distribution width ratio (HRR) is associated with the onset, progression, and prognosis of various diseases. However, to the best of our knowledge, no research has conducted statistical analyses to determine the association between HRR and stroke. This cross-sectional study was conducted among adults with complete data on hemoglobin-red cell distribution width ratio (HRR) and stroke from the 2005–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). HRR was calculated by dividing hemoglobin (HGB) in grams per deciliter (g/dL) by the red blood cell distribution width (RDW). Weighted multivariable logistic regression and generalized additive models were employed to investigate the independent and nonlinear relationships between HRR and stroke. Threshold effects were assessed using two-piece linear regression models. Additionally, subgroup analyses and interaction tests were performed. A total of 36,215 participants were included, with 2.92% classified as stroke patients. The prevalence of stroke decreased across increasing tertiles of HRR (Q1: 5.07%; Q2: 2.63%; Q3: 1.69%; P < 0.0001). A negative association between HRR and stroke was observed in both unadjusted and adjusted models. In Model III, each one-unit increase in HRR was associated with a 58% reduction in the likelihood of stroke (Model III: OR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.29–0.63). Subgroup analyses and interaction tests revealed that the association between HRR and stroke was BMI-dependent (P < 0.05), with the negative association only observed in participants with BMI < = 25 and BMI 25–30, but not in those with BMI > 30. Using a two-piece linear regression model, a threshold effect was identified at a BMI of 30 (K = 1.16). To the left of this breakpoint, there was a negative association between HRR and stroke (OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.27–0.97), whereas no such association was detected to the right of the breakpoint (OR = 6.49, 95% CI: 0.75–56.11). Our study aimed to investigate the association between RFM and kidney stones, focusing specifically on the mediating role of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). We performed a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) covering the years 2007 to 2018. Our analytical approach included multivariate logistic regression modeling, subgroup analysis, generalized additive modeling (GAM), smoothed curve fitting, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, as well as mediation analysis to assess the association between RFM and kidney stones. Finally, we categorized RFM into normal and elevated groups to conduct a sensitivity analysis. This study involved 29,712 participants, with a kidney stone prevalence of 9.88%. We discovered a positive association between RFM and kidney stones (OR = 1.41 per SD increment, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.60). Subgroup analysis revealed a consistent positive association across all subgroups, with a notably higher likelihood of developing kidney stones in young adulthood (P for interaction < 0.05). The smooth curve fitting shows that RFM is nonlinearly and positively correlated with the prevalence of kidney stones. Additionally, HDL-C was found to be negatively associated with kidney stones. Importantly, HDL-C demonstrated a significant mediating effect, with a mediation ratio of 13.52%. ROC analysis indicated that RFM (AUC = 0.616) provided better diagnostic accuracy than traditional measures such as BMI (AUC = 0.565) and WC (AUC = 0.599). Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis further supports the robustness of our findings. RFM is nonlinearly and positively correlated with the prevalence of kidney stones, with HDL cholesterol playing a significant mediating role in this relationship. Hearing loss(HL) represents a significant public health concern. This study aimed to determine the association between hearing loss and gout and to elucidate the underlying causative mechanisms. Data for this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Mendelian randomization (MR) basic databases. Initially, baseline characteristics of individuals with and without gout were compared. A nonlinear relationship between pure tone audiometry (PTA) values and gout prevalence was confirmed through restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve analysis. Subsequently, hearing loss was categorized into different levels based on PTA values, and multiple logistic regression analysis was employed to calculate the impact of varying degrees of hearing loss on the risk of gout. Finally, MR analysis was conducted to further elucidate the causal relationship between hearing loss and gout. A total of 3,258 individuals were included in this study, with a gout prevalence of 3.7%. Significant differences were observed between the gout group and the non-gout group in variables such as age, gender, blood uric acid level, BMI, hypertension, and diabetes. RCS curve analysis revealed a significant nonlinear relationship between PTA values and gout risk, particularly when PTA values exceed a specific threshold, where the curve flattens. Based on different levels of hearing loss derived from PTA values, multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that mild and moderate hearing loss significantly increased the risk of gout, remaining statistically significant after adjusting for covariates (odds ratio (OR) = 2.10–3.48, P < 0.05). MR analysis further confirmed the causal relationship between hearing loss and gout. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was employed as the primary method, revealing that both individuals with hearing difficulties (OR = 0.98, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.96–0.999, P = 0.012) and those without hearing impairment (OR = 1.02, 95% CI 1.01–1.04, P = 0.012) exhibited a significant causal relationship with gout. Goodness-of-fit tests and sensitivity analyses were used to verify the reliability of the results. Hearing loss has a significant causal relationship with an increased risk of gout, providing a new perspective for the prevention and management of gout. Psoriasis is linked to insulin resistance (IR). Nevertheless, the applicability of the METS-IR index, a new IR evaluation tool, for evaluating changes in insulin sensitivity in psoriasis populations is currently unknown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the METS-IR index and psoriasis in a US adult population. This cross-sectional study utilized data from adults aged 20 to 80 years from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2003–2006 and 2009–2014. The associations between the METS-IR index and psoriasis were examined using multivariate logistic regression and smoothed curve fitting. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted to verify the stability of the association within the population. This study included 5,966 participants, of whom 182 had psoriasis. In the fully adjusted model, the METS-IR index was positively associated with psoriasis, showing a 1.7% increase in psoriasis prevalence for each one-unit increase in the METS-IR index (Model 2: OR 1.017, 95% CI 1.006–1.028). Participants in the highest quartile group were 91.9% more likely to develop psoriasis compared to those in the lowest quartile group (OR = 1.919, 95% CI 1.180–3.118). Smooth curve fitting revealed a nonlinear association between the METS-IR index and psoriasis, with an inflection point of 41.675. This positive association was more pronounced in females, non-obese individuals, those with light alcohol consumption, comorbid coronary heart disease and hyperlipidemia, non-hypertensive and non-diabetic individuals. The results of the study suggest that higher METS-IR scores are associated with an increased likelihood of psoriasis among U.S. adults. The METS-IR index is specifically recommended as a clinical indicator for the management and treatment of psoriasis in women, non-obese individuals, light alcohol consumers, individuals with comorbid coronary artery disease andhyperlipidemia, non-hypertensive and non-diabetic individuals. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound impact on individuals' mental health and well-being worldwide. This study investigated the prevalences of and association between mental health and quality of life (QOL) in Thailand after the COVID-19 outbreak. A cross-sectional study was conducted among Thai individuals aged ≥ 20 years across all regions. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between mental health and QOL. A total of 1,133 participants (mean age: 35.1 ± 17.2 years) completed the survey. The prevalence of depression with PHQ-9 instrument was 19.4%. Depression was significantly associated with those who have had family members die from COVID-19 infection (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.13–4.52]). The percentages of depression, anxiety, and stress with DASS-21 instrument were 32.4%, 45.4%, and 24.1%, respectively. Smokers and alcohol consumption had approximately 1.5-time higher risk of stress compared with non-smokers and no alcohol consumption (AOR = 1.50, 95% CI [1.01–2.24], AOR = 1.48, 95% CI [1.09–2.02], respectively). An association was observed between socioeconomic factors such as job and income loss and mental health outcomes. Depression, anxiety, and stress were significantly negatively associated with QOL. This study demonstrates a strong association between mental health and QOL among Thai people after the COVID-19 outbreak. The findings underscore the need for interventions targeting lifestyles, including those addressing alcohol consumption and smoking, especially among those who have had family members die from COVID-19 infection and mental health support services that can address depression, anxiety, and stress to improve the overall well-being of the population. This cross-sectional survey aims to determine whether cotinine exposure would enhance the relationship between blood manganese (Mn) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children using the NHANES database. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) and logistic regression analyses were adopted to determine the potential relationship. Besides, we tested the robustness of the results by performing trend tests and subgroup analyses. The study finally enrolled 866 children aged 18 years and below. Blood Mn was linearly linked to NAFLD and the risk of NAFLD was increased with the blood Mn elevation (P < 0.05). There was a notable relationship between blood Mn and NAFLD in crude model 1, which was still significant upon adjustment of all the identified covariates (all P < 0.05). Under Mn exposure, the cotinine-exposed group had a higher risk of NAFLD than the cotinine-unexposed group. In conclusion, blood Mn level is an independent risk factor for pediatric NAFLD, and cotinine exposure can enhance this relationship to some degree. Obesity has become a global public health problem, and its relationship with gastrointestinal diseases has become a major concern. The visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a novel index to assess the distribution and content of visceral fat, and this study aimed to investigate the association between VAI and bowel habits (chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The 2005–2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset was used for the cross-sectional survey. Bowel habits and IBD were defined by self-report. Multiple logistic regression models were used to test the linear association of VAI with bowel habits and IBD. Fitted smoothed curves and threshold effects analyses were used to characterize nonlinear relationships. This cross-sectional study included 10,391 adults (≥ 20 years). After adjusting for covariates, there was a significant negative association between VAI and chronic constipation (OR [95% CI]: 0.97 [0.95, 1.00]) but no significant association with IBD (OR [95% CI]: 0.97 [0.87, 1.07]). Additionally, there was a nonlinear association between VAI and chronic diarrhea with a breakpoint of 3.08, with a positive correlation between the two on the left side of the breakpoint and no statistical significance on the right side. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests showed that maintaining sleep health was associated with a low risk of chronic constipation. Elevated VAI levels were negatively associated with chronic constipation, and elevated levels were positively associated with chronic diarrhea at VAI < 3.08. This reminds us that maintaining moderate levels of visceral fat may prevent the onset of chronic constipation and circumvent the risk of chronic diarrhea. Few studies have explored the association between residential noise exposure and burnout. In this study, we investigated the association between residential noise exposure and burnout prevalence among 5416 health-care workers in Taiwan from 2012 to 2017. Burnout was evaluated using the Mandarin version of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory by considering both continuous and binary measures. We applied ordinary Kriging models to calculate the annual average residential noise exposure at an individual level. Multivariable linear regression models and logistic regression models were employed. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore dose–response relationships. The median age of the health-care workers was 31.5 years. In the multivariable linear regression models, exposure to residential noise (per 1 dBA) was associated with increases in personal burnout and work-related burnout scores by 1.59 ± 0.25 and 1.38 ± 0.20, respectively. In the multivariable logistic regression models, the adjusted odds ratios were 1.24 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16, 1.32) for personal burnout and 1.19 (95% CI: 1.13, 1.26) for work-related burnout per 1-dBA increase in residential noise exposure. Linear dose–response associations of burnout with residential noise level were detected. Heart failure (HF) is closely linked to platelet counts and lipid levels. The platelet-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (PHR) is a novel marker for assessing cardiovascular disease. This study investigates the relationship between PHR and HF. We analyzed data from ten consecutive NHANES survey cycles (1998–2018), focusing on self-reported HF diagnoses with complete PHR information. PHR was calculated as platelet count divided by HDL-C (mmol/L). A multivariate logistic regression model was used to examine the association between PHR and HF, with subgroup analyses to identify potential influencing factors. RCS curve plotting and threshold effect analysis were employed to describe non-linear relationships. The study included 31,410 adults aged 20–85 years. The multivariate logistic regression indicated that individuals with the highest PHR had 82% increased likelihood of HF compared to those with the lowest PHR (OR = 1.82; 95% CI, 1.37–2.40, P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed no significant interactions between PHR and specific subgroups (P > 0.05), except in those with alcohol consumption (yes/no) and BMI subgroups (P < 0.05). The association between PHR and HF was non-linear, with a notable turning point at 281.53. Elevated PHR is significantly associated with HF, suggesting it may serve as an effective clinical indicator for monitoring HF risk. Inflammation plays a crucial role in cancer development. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a measure of inflammation, is obtained from a complete blood count. However, little is known about the association between NLR and cancer in the general adult population in the United States. This study aimed to evaluate whether NLR is associated with cancer in American adults. This retrospective cross-sectional study included 28,016 adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset spanning 2005 to 2018. Data on demographics (age, sex, race, marital status, Poverty-Income Ratio, education level), lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index), medical conditions (hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease), and laboratory parameters (hemoglobin, platelet count, alanine aminotransferase, creatinine, albumin, and lactate dehydrogenase), were collected. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the research objectives. Of the total 28,016 participants, 2639 had cancer. The mean age was 49.6 ± 17.6 years, and 50% were male. A positive association between NLR and cancer risk was observed after multivariate adjustment (OR = 1.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.05–1.36, p = 0.006). Similar patterns were observed in subgroup analyses (all p-values for interaction > 0.05). A higher NLR was directly correlated with an increased risk of developing cancer in adults. Migraine, common in individuals under 50 years, is linked to oxidative stress. The association between telomere length shortening and migraine, along with potential age-related influences, has not been comprehensively studied. This cross-sectional study included data from 6169 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2002, encompassing information on peripheral blood leukocyte telomere length, severe headache or migraine, and potential confounders. Stratifying by age (20–50 years, > 50 years), we employed multivariable logistic regression, restricted cubic splines and interaction test to investigate age-influenced telomere length in relation to migraine. In participants aged 20–50 years, the odds ratio (OR) for migraine in the shortest telomere length group T1 (0.39–0.89) was 1.35 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.01, 1.79) compared to the longest group T3 (1.10–9.42), whereas in those aged > 50 years, the OR of T1 was 0.93 (95% CI 0.60, 1.43). Additionally, telomere length and age interacted in the development of migraine (p for interaction: 0.010). In individuals aged 20–50, an L-shaped relationship was found between telomere length and migraine, with an inflection point at 1.02T/S ratio. The OR was 9.34 (95% CI 1.56, 55.99) for telomere lengths < 1.02T/S ratio. These findings suggest age influences the association between telomere length and migraine in U.S. adults. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) serves as a valuable instrument for evaluating the intake of dietary antioxidants. This research aims to clarify the connection between CDAI and the risk of female infertility by analyzing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2018. Participants underwent two 24-h dietary recall interviews to calculate CDAI. Female infertility was determined through two questionnaires. Logistic regression model, restricted cubic spline and subgroup analysis were employed to examine the association between CDAI and female infertility. The study encompassed 2162 participants. Participants with female infertility had lower CDAI levels compared to those without. Following adjustment for confounding variables, a negative association between CDAI levels and female infertility was observed (Q4 vs. Q1, OR [95% CI] 0.392 [0.193, 0.795], P = 0.016). RCS demonstrated a statistically significant linear negative relationship between CDAI and female infertility. Subgroup analysis showed no significant interaction. This study illustrates a negative link between the CDAI and female infertility, indicating that higher consumption of dietary antioxidants may be associated with a reduced risk of female infertility. In order to explore the association of oxidative balance score (OBS) with female asthma among U.S. adults, we applied multiple logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline, and subgroup analysis using a cross-sectional study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). 17,582 female out of the 91,351 participants from 2001 to 2018 in NHANES were enrolled in the analysis and 2,795 female participants had asthma. In three models, the OBS was negatively associated with female asthma incidence with the odds ratios (OR) = 0.99. When comparing the ratio of Q2, Q3, and Q4 of OBS quartiles against the Q1 quartile, the adjusted OR with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were 0.88 (0.75–1.03), 0.84 (0.73–0.97), and 0.82 (0.70–0.96) respectively, with p < 0.01 in the all covariates adjusted models. The restricted cubic splines indicated a linear relationship between OBS and female asthma. Subgroup analysis revealed no significant interaction effects except in the smoke group (p < 0.001), and there was a significant difference in the former smoker with OR 0.97 (0.96–0.99). We observed that there is negative relationship between OBS score and female asthma incidence, which suggests OBS probably is a protective factor for female on-set asthma. Background: Both lipid metabolism and obesity are crucial factors in osteoporosis, influencing the relevance of the cardiometabolic index (CMI), a new body fat index incorporating obesity and lipid metrics. Our study aims to explore the relationship between CMI and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) and the mediating role of body fat percentage. Methods: Utilizing the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2011 to 2018, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis. We employed multiple linear regression models, subgroup analyses, generalized additive models (GAM), smooth curve fitting, and mediation analysis to evaluate the linear and nonlinear relationships between CMI and lumbar spine BMD. Results: The study involved 5,124 participants with an average lumbar spine BMD of 1.03 ± 0.15 g/cm2. We identified a negative correlation between CMI and lumbar spine BMD (β = -0.015; 95% CI: -0.023, -0.008). Nonlinear associations were evident, with inflection points at CMI values of 1.12 and 2.86. Subgroup analyses showed consistent negative correlations across all categories without significant differences (p for interaction > 0.05). Moreover, body fat percentage negatively correlated with BMD (β = -0.005; 95% CI: -0.006, -0.004) and mediated 9.41% of the relationship between CMI and BMD. Conclusion: Increased CMI levels are associated with lower lumbar spine BMD, with body fat percentage significantly mediating this relationship. To explore the association between serum calcium levels within normal ranges and Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) in type 2 diabetes patients. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed clinical data from type 2 diabetes patients admitted to the Endocrinology Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from January 1, 2021, to December 1, 2022. We measured serum calcium levels, corrected for albumin, and screened for diabetes-related complications, including DKD. The association between corrected serum calcium levels and DKD was evaluated using logistic regression, with adjustments made for potential confounders and a generalized additive model (GAM) to explore non-linear relationships, supplemented by subgroup analyses. Among the 3016 patients (52.55% male, 47.45% female), the mean corrected serum calcium was 2.29 ± 0.08 mmol/L. DKD was present in 38.73% of patients. A 0.1 mmol/L increase in corrected serum calcium was associated with a 44% increased risk of DKD (OR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.28–1.61, p < 0.0001). The GAM indicated a linear relationship between corrected serum calcium and DKD risk, consistent across subgroups. Corrected serum calcium levels were linearly associated with DKD risk in type 2 diabetes patients, underlining its potential role in risk assessment. These findings emphasize the clinical importance of monitoring serum calcium levels. The Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) assesses visceral fat and related metabolic risks. However, its precise correlation with sarcopenia is unclear. This study aimed to examine this correlation. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using NHANES data from 2011 to 2018. To correct VAI skewness, a logarithmic transformation was applied. Multiple covariates were included, and logistic regression was employed to explore the relationship between VAI and sarcopenia. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) and threshold saturation analyses were used to investigate the nonlinear relationship. Subgroup analyses evaluated the effects of various stratification factors. Sensitivity and additive analyses tested the robustness of the findings. The study included 4688 individuals. Participants with sarcopenia had significantly higher VAI values. Logistic regression revealed a significant positive connection between Log VAI and sarcopenia (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.80–2.43) after adjusting for variables. RCS analysis showed a nonlinear correlation, identifying a breakpoint at VAI = 1.51. To the left of this breakpoint, each unit increase in VAI significantly correlated with a higher likelihood of sarcopenia (OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.74–3.79); to the right, increases in VAI did not significantly affect prevalence. Subgroup analyses suggested VAI as an independent risk factor. Sensitivity and additive analyses confirmed the main findings' robustness. Among American adults, the VAI is significantly associated with sarcopenia, with higher VAI values potentially increasing the prevalence of sarcopenia. Non-condom use is known as one of the risky sexual behaviors among youth and a contributing factor to the high prevalence of HIV in Nigeria. Therefore this study aimed to assess the spatial pattern and determinants of non-condom use among sexually active young people in Nigeria. The study employed a cross-sectional analysis of population-based data involving 288 males and 780 females aged 15–24 years, giving 1068 sexually active young people drawn from the 2018 NDHS. The study adopted a multi-level and spatial analysis to identify factors associated with non-condom use in Nigeria. The prevalence of non-condom use was 57.7% in this study. The spatial analysis showed that the Northeastern and South–South regions of Nigeria had a high proportion of non-condom use among young people, while the Northwest, North-Central, and Southwestern parts had low proportions of non-condom use. On multilevel analysis, the individual and community level factors associated with non-condom use included exposure to media (AOR 0.59; 95% CI 0.39–0.91) and younger age (AOR 0.72; 95% CI 0.53–0.98). Areas with a high proportion of non-condom use should receive the most attention through the promotion of condom use and education, alongside a focus on important associated factors. HRR was calculated by dividing hemoglobin (HGB) in grams per deciliter (g/dL) by the red blood cell distribution width (RDW). Weighted multivariable logistic regression and generalized additive models were employed to investigate the independent and nonlinear relationships between HRR and stroke. Threshold effects were assessed using two-piece linear regression models. Additionally, subgroup analyses and interaction tests were performed. A total of 36,215 participants were included, with 2.92% classified as stroke patients. The prevalence of stroke decreased across increasing tertiles of HRR (Q1: 5.07%; Q2: 2.63%; Q3: 1.69%; P 30. Using a two-piece linear regression model, a threshold effect was identified at a BMI of 30 (K = 1.16). To the left of this breakpoint, there was a negative association between HRR and stroke (OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.27–0.97), whereas no such association was detected to the right of the breakpoint (OR = 6.49, 95% CI: 0.75–56.11). HRR is negatively associated with the likelihood of stroke, with a lower risk of stroke in individuals with higher HRR levels.

Abstract Depression frequently comorbidities with cancer, adversely affecting survivors’ quality of life. Liver dysfunction is also prevalent among cancer survivors. However, the association between these two conditions remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between depression and liver function biomarkers in US cancer survivors. A cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2020. Cancer survivors were screened and depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and 18 liver function biomarkers were included. Survey-weighted generalized linear models with multiple covariables adjusted were employed to examine the associations between depression and liver function biomarkers. A total of 4118 cancer survivors were included, representing a weighted population of 21 501 237. After adjusted with age, gender, race, marital status, education level, family income-to-poverty ratio, and number of cancer types, 8 biomarkers demonstrated positive correlations with depression in cancer survivors, included alanine aminotransferase (ALT, OR = 1.007, 95% CI: 1.000 to 1.013), alkaline phosphatase (ALP, 1.006 [1.002, 1.010]), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT, 1.004 [1.001, 1.007]), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, 1.004 [1.000, 1.009]), total protein (TP, 1.040 [1.009, 1.072]), globulin (GLB, 1.060 [1.030, 1.091]), total cholesterol (TC) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (1.162 [1.050, 1.286]), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to HDL-C ratio (1.243 [1.012, 1.526]); while 4 other biomarkers exhibited negative correlations, included HDL-C (0.988 [0.980, 0.997]), total bilirubin (TBi, 0.501 [0.284, 0.883]), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to ALT ratio (0.588 [0.351, 0.986]), albumin (ALB) to GLB ratio (0.384 [0.229, 0.642]). Following sensitivity analysis, 5 biomarkers included LDH, HDL-C, TBi, AST/ALT and LDL-C/HDL-C lost their statistical significance for the association. This study identified certain associations between 7 liver function biomarkers and depression in US cancer survivors. Further research, particularly prospective longitudinal studies, is warranted to elucidate the causal relationships and explore the potential of improving liver function for the management of depression in cancer patients.

Abstract Our study aimed to investigate the association between RFM and kidney stones, focusing specifically on the mediating role of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). We performed a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) covering the years 2007 to 2018. Our analytical approach included multivariate logistic regression modeling, subgroup analysis, generalized additive modeling (GAM), smoothed curve fitting, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, as well as mediation analysis to assess the association between RFM and kidney stones. Finally, we categorized RFM into normal and elevated groups to conduct a sensitivity analysis. This study involved 29,712 participants, with a kidney stone prevalence of 9.88%. We discovered a positive association between RFM and kidney stones (OR = 1.41 per SD increment, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.60). Abstract Hearing loss(HL) represents a significant public health concern. This study aimed to determine the association between hearing loss and gout and to elucidate the underlying causative mechanisms. Data for this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Mendelian randomization (MR) basic databases. Initially, baseline characteristics of individuals with and without gout were compared. A nonlinear relationship between pure tone audiometry (PTA) values and gout prevalence was confirmed through restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve analysis. Subsequently, hearing loss was categorized into different levels based on PTA values, and multiple logistic regression analysis was employed to calculate the impact of varying degrees of hearing loss on the risk of gout. Finally, MR analysis was conducted to further elucidate the causal relationship between hearing loss and gout. A total of 3,258 individuals were included in this study, with a gout prevalence of 3.7%. Significant differences were observed between the gout group and the non-gout group in variables such as age, gender, blood uric acid level, BMI, hypertension, and diabetes. RCS curve analysis revealed a significant nonlinear relationship between PTA values and gout risk, particularly when PTA values exceed a specific threshold, where the curve flattens. Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound impact on individuals’ mental health and well-being worldwide. This study investigated the prevalences of and association between mental health and quality of life (QOL) in Thailand after the COVID-19 outbreak. A cross-sectional study was conducted among Thai individuals aged ≥ 20 years across all regions. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between mental health and QOL. A total of 1,133 participants (mean age: 35.1 ± 17.2 years) completed the survey. The prevalence of depression with PHQ-9 instrument was 19.4%. Depression was significantly associated with those who have had family members die from COVID-19 infection (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.13–4.52]). The percentages of depression, anxiety, and stress with DASS-21 instrument were 32.4%, 45.4%, and 24.1%, respectively. Smokers and alcohol consumption had approximately 1.5-time higher risk of stress compared with non-smokers and no alcohol consumption (AOR = 1.50, 95% CI [1.01–2.24], AOR = 1.48, 95% CI [1.09–2.02], respectively). An association was observed between socioeconomic factors such as job and income loss and mental health outcomes. Depression, anxiety, and stress were significantly negatively associated with QOL. This study demonstrates a strong association between mental health and QOL among Thai people after the COVID-19 outbreak. The findings underscore the need for interventions targeting lifestyles, including those addressing alcohol consumption and smoking, especially among those who have had family members die from COVID-19 infection and mental health support services that can address depression, anxiety, and stress to improve the overall well-being of the population.

Abstract The main aim of this study was to explore the correlation between the platelet/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (PHR) and cognitive function in elderly individuals from the United States. This investigation leveraged data encompassing 2299 participants, all aged 60 years and above, from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2011 to 2014. Inclusion criteria were based on the availability of complete datasets for PHR and cognitive function assessments. Abstract Psoriasis is linked to insulin resistance (IR). Nevertheless, the applicability of the METS-IR index, a new IR evaluation tool, for evaluating changes in insulin sensitivity in psoriasis populations is currently unknown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the METS-IR index and psoriasis in a US adult population. This cross-sectional study utilized data from adults aged 20 to 80 years from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2003–2006 and 2009–2014. The associations between the METS-IR index and psoriasis were examined using multivariate logistic regression and smoothed curve fitting. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted to verify the stability of the association within the population. This study included 5,966 participants, of whom 182 had psoriasis. In the fully adjusted model, the METS-IR index was positively associated with psoriasis, showing a 1.7% increase in psoriasis prevalence for each one-unit increase in the METS-IR index (Model 2: OR 1.017, 95% CI 1.006–1.028). Participants in the highest quartile group were 91.9% more likely to develop psoriasis compared to those in the lowest quartile group (OR = 1.919, 95% CI 1.180–3.118). Smooth curve fitting revealed a nonlinear association between the METS-IR index and psoriasis, with an inflection point of 41.675. This positive association was more pronounced in females, non-obese individuals, those with light alcohol consumption, comorbid coronary heart disease and hyperlipidemia, non-hypertensive and non-diabetic individuals. The results of the study suggest that higher METS-IR scores are associated with an increased likelihood of psoriasis among U.S. adults. The METS-IR index is specifically recommended as a clinical indicator for the management and treatment of psoriasis in women, non-obese individuals, light alcohol consumers, individuals with comorbid coronary artery disease andhyperlipidemia, non-hypertensive and non-diabetic individuals. However, Considering the many known and unknown covariates that may be associated with psoriasis and influence theresults of the study, we remain cautious about the results obtained and look forward to the addition of subsequent studies.

Abstract There is a significant interrelationship between cardiovascular disease and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as they share common risk factors and comorbidities. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of inpatients with cardiovascular disease towards OSA. This cross-sectional study was conducted between January, 2022 and January, 2023 at Zhongda Hospital Affiliated to Southeast University among inpatients with cardiovascular disease using a self-administered questionnaire. A self-designed questionnaire was used to assess KAP, and the STOP-Bang questionnaire was applied to evaluate participants’ OSA risk. Spearman correlation and path analyses were conducted to explore relationships among KAP scores and high OSA risk. Abstract Obesity has become a global public health problem, and its relationship with gastrointestinal diseases has become a major concern. The visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a novel index to assess the distribution and content of visceral fat, and this study aimed to investigate the association between VAI and bowel habits (chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The 2005–2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset was used for the cross-sectional survey. Bowel habits and IBD were defined by self-report. Multiple logistic regression models were used to test the linear association of VAI with bowel habits and IBD. Fitted smoothed curves and threshold effects analyses were used to characterize nonlinear relationships. This cross-sectional study included 10,391 adults (≥ 20 years). After adjusting for covariates, there was a significant negative association between VAI and chronic constipation (OR [95% CI]: 0.97 [0.95, 1.00]) but no significant association with IBD (OR [95% CI]: 0.97 [0.87, 1.07]). Additionally, there was a nonlinear association between VAI and chronic diarrhea with a breakpoint of 3.08, with a positive correlation between the two on the left side of the breakpoint and no statistical significance on the right side. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests showed that maintaining sleep health was associated with a low risk of chronic constipation. Abstract Inflammation plays a crucial role in cancer development. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a measure of inflammation, is obtained from a complete blood count. However, little is known about the association between NLR and cancer in the general adult population in the United States. This study aimed to evaluate whether NLR is associated with cancer in American adults. This retrospective cross-sectional study included 28,016 adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset spanning 2005 to 2018. Data on demographics (age, sex, race, marital status, Poverty-Income Ratio, education level), lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index), medical conditions (hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease), and laboratory parameters (hemoglobin, platelet count, alanine aminotransferase, creatinine, albumin, and lactate dehydrogenase), were collected. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the research objectives. Of the total 28,016 participants, 2639 had cancer. The mean age was 49.6 ± 17.6 years, and 50% were male. A positive association between NLR and cancer risk was observed after multivariate adjustment (OR = 1.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.05–1.36, p = 0.006). Similar patterns were observed in subgroup analyses (all p-values for interaction > 0.05). A higher NLR was directly correlated with an increased risk of developing cancer in adults.

Abstract A body Shape index (ABSI), defined as waist circumference (WC)/(body mass index (BMI)2/3 × height1/2), is unique in that the ABSI is positively associated with visceral obesity and is independent of BMI. The ABSI has also been shown to be positively and linearly correlated with the amount of visceral adiposity in the general population and with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, it is uncertain whether ABSI is associated with periodontitis in hypertensive patients. A cross-sectional study of 2,482 hypertensive patients (mean age 65.2 ± 9.1 years) was conducted using the ABSI Z score, periodontitis as a dichotomous variable, the ABSI Z score as a continuous variable, and multiple covariates such as age, gender, and race. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, multiple regression model, subgroup analysis with EmpowerStats (version 4.2), and curve transformation plots were generated. In multiple regression model analysis, ABSI Z score showed a significant positive association with periodontitis in the hypertensive population in all three models. When ABSI Z score was divided into low, moderate, and high three groups, we observed that those with the highest ABSI Z score had a 20% increased risk of periodontitis among people with hypertension (OR 1.2; 95% CI 1.0, 1.5; p = 0.046). We used smooth curve fitting to confirm the results and found that these results were still supported, and additional subgroup analyses showed that the positive association between ABSI Z score and periodontitis in hypertensive population was stable and consistent in the general population. The present cross-sectional investigation showed a positive association between ABSI Z score and periodontitis in a hypertensive population.

Abstract Heart failure (HF) is closely linked to platelet counts and lipid levels. The platelet-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (PHR) is a novel marker for assessing cardiovascular disease. This study investigates the relationship between PHR and HF. We analyzed data from ten consecutive NHANES survey cycles (1998–2018), focusing on self-reported HF diagnoses with complete PHR information. PHR was calculated as platelet count divided by HDL-C (mmol/L). A multivariate logistic regression model was used to examine the association between PHR and HF, with subgroup analyses to identify potential influencing factors. RCS curve plotting and threshold effect analysis were employed to describe non-linear relationships. The study included 31,410 adults aged 20–85 years. Abstract Few studies have explored the association between residential noise exposure and burnout. In this study, we investigated the association between residential noise exposure and burnout prevalence among 5416 health-care workers in Taiwan from 2012 to 2017. Burnout was evaluated using the Mandarin version of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory by considering both continuous and binary measures. We applied ordinary Kriging models to calculate the annual average residential noise exposure at an individual level. Multivariable linear regression models and logistic regression models were employed. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore dose–response relationships. The median age of the health-care workers was 31.5 years. In the multivariable linear regression models, exposure to residential noise (per 1 dBA) was associated with increases in personal burnout and work-related burnout scores by 1.59 ± 0.25 and 1.38 ± 0.20, respectively. In the multivariable logistic regression models, the adjusted odds ratios were 1.24 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16, 1.32) for personal burnout and 1.19 (95% CI: 1.13, 1.26) for work-related burnout per 1-dBA increase in residential noise exposure. Linear dose–response associations of burnout with residential noise level were detected. Our findings suggest that exposure to residential noise may increase the risk of burnout among health-care workers.

Abstract Migraine, common in individuals under 50 years, is linked to oxidative stress. The association between telomere length shortening and migraine, along with potential age-related influences, has not been comprehensively studied. This cross-sectional study included data from 6169 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2002, encompassing information on peripheral blood leukocyte telomere length, severe headache or migraine, and potential confounders. Stratifying by age (20–50 years, > 50 years), we employed multivariable logistic regression, restricted cubic splines and interaction test to investigate age-influenced telomere length in relation to migraine. In participants aged 20–50 years, the odds ratio (OR) for migraine in the shortest telomere length group T1 (0.39–0.89) was 1.35 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.01, 1.79) compared to the longest group T3 (1.10–9.42), whereas in those aged > 50 years, the OR of T1 was 0.93 (95% CI 0.60, 1.43). Additionally, telomere length and age interacted in the development of migraine (p for interaction: 0.010). In individuals aged 20–50, an L-shaped relationship was found between telomere length and migraine, with an inflection point at 1.02T/S ratio. Abstract The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) serves as a valuable instrument for evaluating the intake of dietary antioxidants. This research aims to clarify the connection between CDAI and the risk of female infertility by analyzing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2018. Participants underwent two 24-h dietary recall interviews to calculate CDAI. Female infertility was determined through two questionnaires. Logistic regression model, restricted cubic spline and subgroup analysis were employed to examine the association between CDAI and female infertility. The study encompassed 2162 participants. Participants with female infertility had lower CDAI levels compared to those without. Following adjustment for confounding variables, a negative association between CDAI levels and female infertility was observed (Q4 vs. Q1, OR [95% CI] 0.392 [0.193, 0.795], P = 0.016). RCS demonstrated a statistically significant linear negative relationship between CDAI and female infertility. Subgroup analysis showed no significant interaction. This study illustrates a negative link between the CDAI and female infertility, indicating that higher consumption of dietary antioxidants may be associated with a reduced risk of female infertility. Additional rigorously designed prospective studies are necessary to validate these results.

Abstract Background: Both lipid metabolism and obesity are crucial factors in osteoporosis, influencing the relevance of the cardiometabolic index (CMI), a new body fat index incorporating obesity and lipid metrics. Our study aims to explore the relationship between CMI and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) and the mediating role of body fat percentage. Methods: Utilizing the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2011 to 2018, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis. We employed multiple linear regression models, subgroup analyses, generalized additive models (GAM), smooth curve fitting, and mediation analysis to evaluate the linear and nonlinear relationships between CMI and lumbar spine BMD. Results: The study involved 5,124 participants with an average lumbar spine BMD of 1.03 ± 0.15 g/cm2. We identified a negative correlation between CMI and lumbar spine BMD (β = -0.015; 95% CI: -0.023, -0.008). Nonlinear associations were evident, with inflection points at CMI values of 1.12 and 2.86. Subgroup analyses showed consistent negative correlations across all categories without significant differences (p for interaction > 0.05). Moreover, body fat percentage negatively correlated with BMD (β = -0.005; 95% CI: -0.006, -0.004) and mediated 9.41% of the relationship between CMI and BMD. Conclusion: Increased CMI levels are associated with lower lumbar spine BMD, with body fat percentage significantly mediating this relationship. This underscores the importance of managing body composition in the context of bone health, highlighting CMI’s potential utility in osteoporosis risk assessment.

Abstract In order to explore the association of oxidative balance score (OBS) with female asthma among U.S. adults, we applied multiple logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline, and subgroup analysis using a cross-sectional study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). 17,582 female out of the 91,351 participants from 2001 to 2018 in NHANES were enrolled in the analysis and 2,795 female participants had asthma. In three models, the OBS was negatively associated with female asthma incidence with the odds ratios (OR) = 0.99. When comparing the ratio of Q2, Q3, and Q4 of OBS quartiles against the Q1 quartile, the adjusted OR with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were 0.88 (0.75–1.03), 0.84 (0.73–0.97), and 0.82 (0.70–0.96) respectively, with p

Abstract The Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) assesses visceral fat and related metabolic risks. However, its precise correlation with sarcopenia is unclear. This study aimed to examine this correlation. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using NHANES data from 2011 to 2018. To correct VAI skewness, a logarithmic transformation was applied. Multiple covariates were included, and logistic regression was employed to explore the relationship between VAI and sarcopenia. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) and threshold saturation analyses were used to investigate the nonlinear relationship. Subgroup analyses evaluated the effects of various stratification factors. Sensitivity and additive analyses tested the robustness of the findings. The study included 4688 individuals. Participants with sarcopenia had significantly higher VAI values. Logistic regression revealed a significant positive connection between Log VAI and sarcopenia (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.80–2.43) after adjusting for variables. RCS analysis showed a nonlinear correlation, identifying a breakpoint at VAI = 1.51. To the left of this breakpoint, each unit increase in VAI significantly correlated with a higher likelihood of sarcopenia (OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.74–3.79); to the right, increases in VAI did not significantly affect prevalence. Subgroup analyses suggested VAI as an independent risk factor. Sensitivity and additive analyses confirmed the main findings’ robustness. Among American adults, the VAI is significantly associated with sarcopenia, with higher VAI values potentially increasing the prevalence of sarcopenia. Monitoring VAI is critical for early identification of high-risk individuals and interventions to delay or minimize the onset and progression of sarcopenia.

Abstract To explore the association between serum calcium levels within normal ranges and Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) in type 2 diabetes patients. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed clinical data from type 2 diabetes patients admitted to the Endocrinology Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from January 1, 2021, to December 1, 2022. We measured serum calcium levels, corrected for albumin, and screened for diabetes-related complications, including DKD. The association between corrected serum calcium levels and DKD was evaluated using logistic regression, with adjustments made for potential confounders and a generalized additive model (GAM) to explore non-linear relationships, supplemented by subgroup analyses. Among the 3016 patients (52.55% male, 47.45% female), the mean corrected serum calcium was 2.29 ± 0.08 mmol/L. DKD was present in 38.73% of patients. A 0.1 mmol/L increase in corrected serum calcium was associated with a 44% increased risk of DKD (OR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.28–1.61, p < 0.0001). The GAM indicated a linear relationship between corrected serum calcium and DKD risk, consistent across subgroups. Corrected serum calcium levels were linearly associated with DKD risk in type 2 diabetes patients, underlining its potential role in risk assessment. These findings emphasize the clinical importance of monitoring serum calcium levels. However, the need for further prospective studies to confirm these findings is underscored by the study’s cross-sectional design.

Abstract Non-condom use is known as one of the risky sexual behaviors among youth and a contributing factor to the high prevalence of HIV in Nigeria. Therefore this study aimed to assess the spatial pattern and determinants of non-condom use among sexually active young people in Nigeria. The study employed a cross-sectional analysis of population-based data involving 288 males and 780 females aged 15–24 years, giving 1068 sexually active young people drawn from the 2018 NDHS. The study adopted a multi-level and spatial analysis to identify factors associated with non-condom use in Nigeria. The prevalence of non-condom use was 57.7% in this study. The spatial analysis showed that the Northeastern and South–South regions of Nigeria had a high proportion of non-condom use among young people, while the Northwest, North-Central, and Southwestern parts had low proportions of non-condom use. On multilevel analysis, the individual and community level factors associated with non-condom use included exposure to media (AOR 0.59; 95% CI 0.39–0.91) and younger age (AOR 0.72; 95% CI 0.53–0.98). Areas with a high proportion of non-condom use should receive the most attention through the promotion of condom use and education, alongside a focus on important associated factors.

Abstract This study aimed to explore physicians’ and pharmacists’ knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) regarding the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular toxicity associated with cancer treatment. A multicenter cross-sectional study included physicians and pharmacists between April 2023 and June 2023. The study included 918 participants (514 physicians and 404 pharmacists). The average scores of knowledge, attitudes, and practice were 11.6 ± 3.39, 24.7 ± 2.6, and 26.3 ± 6.8 points. Abstract Thyroid nodule (TN) has been becoming a great concern worldwide due to its high incidence. Although some studies have reported associations between trace elements exposure and the risk of TNs, the linkage was not inconclusive. The present study aimed to identify the association of selected serum trace elements (Ca, Mg, V, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Mn and Mo) with TNs among general adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted in January 2021 in Chengdu, China. 1282 subjects completed the questionnaire and gave at least one human biological material after an overnight fast, venous blood, and urine, including 377 TN participants defined through ultrasound. Various trace elements in serum specimens were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Thyroid functions were tested by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA). The associations between trace elements levels and the risk of TNs were examined by restricted cubic splines (RCS) regression and bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models. TNs were more common in females (P 0.05) and BKMR models. FT3 or T4 (total or free) increased significantly with increasing total trace elements mixture levels. In TI-RADS-4 TN subjects, TPO-Ab level increased significantly with increasing total trace elements mixture levels in the high-dose range. Ca, Zn, Mo at their 75th percentile showed positive individual effects on TPO-Ab, which was examined to be interactive. The detection of trace elements for TNs in general adults may be of no significance, but once individuals classified as TI-RADS-4 TNs are detected with abnormal TPO-Ab, Ca, Zn and Mo level are recommended to measure. The substantive association on it still needs to be continuously explored in the future.

Abstract Dietary micronutrients are integral to the development and progression of constipation; however, the specific relationship between dietary copper intake and constipation has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to examine the correlation between dietary copper intake and constipation among U.S. adults, thereby offering novel insights and recommendations for the clinical management and prevention of constipation. Bowel health data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2005 and 2010 were analyzed. Subjects’ dietary information was collected through questionnaire records. Multivariate logistic regression analysis, subgroup analysis, and curve fitting analysis were used to assess the correlation between dietary copper intake and chronic constipation. After adjusting for all possible confounders, each unit increase in dietary copper intake (converted to natural logarithms) was associated with a 20% reduction in the prevalence of constipation (OR = 0.80; 95% CI 0.65–0.98; P = 0.037). The interaction P-values for all subgroups were greater than 0.05, indicating that the findings were stable and consistent across subgroups. The present study showed a significant negative association between dietary copper intake and chronic constipation in adults. This finding raises clinical and healthcare professionals’ awareness of the impact of dietary trace elements on intestinal health and has important implications for the development of personalized meal plans and rational supplementation of trace copper in patients with constipation.

Abstract Research on the potential association between life-ever gallstones and depressive symptoms is limited. This study aims to evaluate whether the presence of gallstone disease is associated with depressive symptoms. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-March 2020 cycles. The presence of depressive symptoms and gallstone disease was assessed using questionnaire responses. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) were calculated using a multivariate logistic regression model, with adjustments made for age, sex, race, body mass index, history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, arthritis, and pulmonary disease across different models. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to ensure the stability of the results. This study included 6201 adults aged 20 years and above, with 539(8.7%) experiencing depressive symptoms. After adjusting for age, sex, race, body mass index, CVD history, hypertension, arthritis, pulmonary disease, depressive symptoms were possibly associated with life-ever gallstones (OR 1.37, 95% CI 0.91–2.08).When depressive symptoms were categorized as mild, moderate, moderately severe, and severe,life-ever gallstones was possibly associated with mild depressive symptoms (OR 1.12, 95% CI 0.81–1.56), moderate depressive symptoms (OR 1.37, 95% CI 0.89–2.12), moderately severe depressive symptoms (OR 1.93, 95% CI 0.93–3.99), and severe depressive symptoms (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.16–2.88).As a continuous variable, life-ever gallstones was associated with the PHQ-9 score (OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.02–0.83). The results remained stable after multiple imputation for all missing data. This cross-sectional study demonstrates no significant association between life-ever gallstones and depressive symptoms in US adults.

Abstract Relative fat mass (RFM) is a novel indicator for measuring body fat. This cross-section study aims to explore the association between RFM and periodontitis and to investigate possible effect modifiers in U.S. adults based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009–2014. The category of periodontitis was defined by the CDC/AAP. Mean clinical attachment loss and mean pocket probing depth (PPD) were calculated. The RFM formula is: 64 − (20 × height/WC) + (12 × sex), with sex coded as 1 for female and 0 for male. Natural cubic spline and weighted multivariable regression analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between RFM and periodontal status. Subgroup and interaction analyses were also employed to assess the moderating roles of age, gender, and race. A total of 10,307 participants were included in our study. Compared to the lowest quartiles, individuals in the highest quartiles of RFM levels were more likely to have moderate/severe periodontitis (ORQ4vs1 = 1.64, 95% CI 1.30–2.06) and had a higher mean PPD (βQ4vs1 = 0.15, 95% CI 0.09–0.22). This association was particularly stronger in populations under the age of 60, with significant interactions. Taken together, RFM is positively associated with periodontitis, particularly in those under 60 years old.

Abstract To explore the clinical characteristics of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 nationwide, especially the effect factors of asymptomatic infection and disappearance of clinical symptoms. A total of 66,448 COVID-19 patients in China who have been diagnosed by nucleic acid test or rapid antigen test were surveyed online (December 24, 2022 to January 16, 2023). Our cross-sectional study used descriptive analyses and binary Logistics regression model to assess the correlation between the clinical characteristics and relative factors, including age, gender, pre-existing conditions, reinfection, vaccination and treatment. A total of 64,515 valid questionnaires were collected. Among included participants, 5969 of which were asymptomatic. The symptoms were mainly upper respiratory symptoms, including dry and itchy throat (64.16%), sore throat (59.95%), hoarseness (57.90%), nasal congestion (53.39%). In binary Logistics regression model, we found that male, no pre-existing conditions, reinfection and vaccination have positive correlations with the appearance of asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. In Cox proportional-hazards regression model, considering all clinical symptoms disappeared in 14 days as outcome, we found that ≤ 60 years old, male, no pre-existing conditions, vaccination and adopted treatment have positive correlations with rapid amelioration of clinical symptoms in COVID-19 patients. The clinical symptoms of the participants were mainly upper respiratory symptoms which were according with the infection of Omicron variant. Factors including age, gender, pre-existing conditions and reinfection could influence the clinical characteristics and prognosis of COVID-19 patients. Importantly, vaccination has positive significance for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Lastly, the use of Chinese medicine maybe beneficial to COVID-19 patients, however, reasonable guidance is necessary.

Abstract Visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a reliable indicator of visceral adiposity. However, no stu-dies have evaluated the association between VAI and DKD in US adults with diabetes. Theref-ore, this study aimed to explore the relationship between them and whether VAI is a good pr-edictor of DKD in US adults with diabetes. Our cross-sectional study included 2508 participan-ts with diabetes who were eligible for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to an-alyze the association between VAI level and DKD. Three models were used to control for pot-ential confounding factors, and subgroup analysis was performed for further verification. A tot-al of 2508 diabetic patients were enrolled, of whom 945 (37.68%) were diagnosed with DKD. Overall, the VAI was 3.36 ± 0.18 in the DKD group and 2.76 ± 0.11 in the control group. VAI was positively correlated with DKD (OR = 1.050, 95% CI 1.049, 1.050) after fully adjusting for co-nfounding factors. Compared with participants in the lowest tertile of VAI, participants in the highest tertile of VAI had a significantly increased risk of DKD by 35.9% (OR = 1.359, 95% CI 1.355, 1.362). Abstract This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of non-emergency surgical patients toward anesthesia. This cross-sectional study was conducted between May and October 2023 at Zibo Central Hospital among non-emergency surgical patients. A total of 429 valid questionnaires were enrolled (mean age: 42.81 ± 13.17 years old; 227 (52.91%) females). The mean KAP scores were 7.79 ± 3.95 (possible range: 0–18), 32.35 ± 2.80 (possible range: 8–40), and 18.14 ± 3.96 (possible range: 6–24), respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that knowledge (OR = 1.095, 95% CI 1.036–1.158, P = 0.001) and previous poor anesthesia experience (OR = 0.081, 95% CI 0.017–0.386, P = 0.002) were independently associated with practice. Non-emergency surgical patients had inadequate knowledge, positive attitude, and proactive practice towards anesthesia. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to implement targeted educational interventions to inform patients about the anesthesia process, potential risks, and benefits.

Abstract This study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to investigate the relationship between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and gallstones. We evaluated the data collected between 2017 to 2020. To evaluate the relationship between TyG index and gallstones, logistic regression analysis, basic characteristics of participants, subgroup analysis, and smooth curve fitting were utilized. The study included 3870 participants over the age of 20 years, 403 of whom reported gallstones, with a prevalence rate of 10.4%. After adjusting for all confounding factors, the risk of gallstones increased by 41% for each unit increase in the TyG index (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.07, 1.86). The smooth curve fitting also showed a positive correlation between the TyG index and gallstones. Subgroup analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between the TyG index and the risk of gallstones in those aged 200 mg/dL, individuals with body mass index (BMI) > 25, and individuals without diabetes. The risk of gallstones is positively correlated with a higher TyG index. Thus, the TyG index can be used as a predictor of the risk of gallstones.

Abstract Lung cancer is intricately associated with genetic susceptibility, leading to familial clustering among affected individuals. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) toward lung cancer risk among the offspring of lung cancer patients. This study was conducted at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital between April 2023 and August 2023. Participants’ demographic characteristics and KAP toward lung cancer risk were collected through questionnaires. A total of 481 valid questionnaires were enrolled, with 243 (50.52%) males, and 242 (50.31%) aged > 40 years old. The mean scores for knowledge, attitude, and practice were 8.54 ± 2.60 (range: 0–13), 25.93 ± 3.16 (range: 7–35), and 17.47 ± 4.30 (range: 5–25), respectively. Structural equation modeling indicated that knowledge exerted a negative direct effect on attitude (β = − 0.417, P = 0.006) but a positive direct effect on practice (β = 0.733, P = 0.025). Additionally, attitudes displayed a negative direct effect on practice (β = − 1.707, P = 0.002). In conclusion, offspring of lung cancer patients exhibited insufficient knowledge, positive attitude, and suboptimal practice toward lung cancer risk.
