Ferrochelatase-1 as a terminal enzyme of heme biosynthesis regulates many essential metabolic and physiological processes. Whether FC1 is involved in plant response to salt stress has not been described. This study shows that Arabidopsis overexpressing AtFC1 displays resistance to high salinity, whereas a T-DNA insertion knock-down mutant fc1 was more sensitive to salt stress than wild-type plants. AtFC1 conferred plant salt resistance by reducing Na+ concentration, enhancing K+ accumulation and preventing lysis of the cell membrane. Such observations were associated with the upregulation of SOS1, which encodes a plasma membrane Na+/H+ antiporter. AtFC1 overexpression led to a reduced expression of several well known salt stress-responsive genes such as NHX1 and AVP1, suggesting that AtFC1-regulated low concentration of Na+ in plants might not be through the mechanism for Na+ sequestration. To investigate the mechanism leading to the role of AtFC1 in mediating salt stress response in plants, a transcriptome of fc1 mutant plants under salt stress was profiled. Our data show that mutation of AtFC1 led to 490 specific genes up-regulated and 380 specific genes down-regulated in fc1 mutants under salt stress. Some of the genes are involved in salt-induced oxidative stress response, monovalent cation-proton (Na+/H+) exchange, and Na+ detoxification.

Atrazine (ATR) is a pesticide widely used for controlling weeds for crop production. Crop contamination with ATR negatively affects crop growth and development. This study presents the first genome-wide single-base-resolution maps of DNA methylation in ATR-exposed rice. Widespread differences were identified in CG and non-CG methylation marks between the ATR-exposed and ATR-free (control) rice. Most of DNA methyltransferases, histone methyltransferases and DNA demethylase were differentially regulated by ATR. The speed and paths of synchronization play a key role in the function of a system, which has not received enough attention up to now. In this work, we study the synchronization process of coupled logistic maps that reveals the common features of low-dimensional dissipative systems. A slowing down of synchronization process is observed, which is a novel phenomenon. The result shows that there are two typical kinds of transient process before the system reaches complete synchronization, which is demonstrated by both the coupled multiple-period maps and the coupled multiple-band chaotic maps. When the coupling is weak, the evolution of the system is governed mainly by the local dynamic, i.e., the node states are attracted by the stable orbits or chaotic attractors of the single map and evolve toward the synchronized orbit in a less coherent way. When the coupling is strong, the node states evolve in a high coherent way toward the stable orbit on the synchronized manifold, where the collective dynamics dominates the evolution. In a mediate coupling strength, the interplay between the two paths is responsible for the slowing down. The existence of different synchronization paths is also proven by the finite-time Lyapunov exponent and its distribution.

Random rewiring is used to generate null networks for the purpose of analyzing the topological properties of scale-free networks, yet the effects of random rewiring on the degree correlation are subject to contradicting interpretations in the literature. We comprehensively analyze the degree correlation of randomly rewired scale-free networks and show that random rewiring increases disassortativity by reducing the average degree of the nearest neighbors of high-degree nodes. The effect can be captured by the measures of the degree correlation that consider all links in the network, but not by analogous measures that consider only links between degree peers, hence the potential for contradicting interpretations. We furthermore find that random and directional rewiring affect the topology of a scale-free network differently, even if the degree correlation of the rewired networks is the same. Consequently, the network dynamics is changed, which is proven here by means of the biased random walk.

Disassortative mixing is ubiquitously found in technological and biological networks, while the corresponding interpretation of its origin remains almost virgin. We here give evidence that pruning the largest-degree nodes of a growing scale-free network has the effect of decreasing the degree correlation coefficient in a controllable and tunable way, while keeping both the trait of a power-law degree distribution and the main properties of network's resilience and robustness under failures or attacks. The essence of these observations can be attributed to the fact the deletion of large-degree nodes affects the delicate balance of positive and negative contributions to degree correlation in growing scale-free networks, eventually leading to the emergence of disassortativity. Moreover, these theoretical prediction will get further validation in the empirical networks. We support our claims via numerical results and mathematical analysis, and we propose a generative model for disassortative growing scale-free networks.
