This study aimed to investigate distress levels, using the distress thermometer (DT), and the factors associated with distress in postoperative patients with pancreatobiliary cancer. This study retrospectively investigated 155 patients who underwent surgery for pancreatobiliary cancer between December 1, 2019 and September 30, 2021. The DT and problem list were used to measure distress. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Of the 155 patients, 16.8% (n = 26) and 83.2% (n = 129) were in the mild-distress and moderate-to-severe distress groups, respectively. The average DT score was 6.21; that for the mild-distress and moderate-to-severe distress groups was 2.46 and 6.97, respectively. More patients in the moderate-to-severe distress group reported having problems of "sadness" (χ 2  = 4.538, P < 0.05), "indigestion" (χ 2  = 10.128, P < 0.001), "eating" (χ 2  = 6.147, P < 0.013), and "getting around" (χ 2  = 4.275, P < 0.039) than in the mild-distress group. In addition, occupation status (odds ratio [OR] = 0.342, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.133-0.879, P = 0.026) and indigestion (OR = 5.897, 95% CI = 1.647-21.111, P = 0.006) were independent risk factors for the presence of severe distress. Patients with pancreatobiliary cancer demonstrated elevated levels of psychological distress. Healthcare providers should therefore be vigilant when evaluating patients for distress and providing appropriate referrals, particularly those who are unemployed or have indigestion., (© 2024. Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) has emerged as a major pathogen in vulnerable and severely ill patients. It remains unclear whether early mortality (EM) due to AB bacteremia is because of worse clinical characteristics of the infected patients or the virulence of the pathogen. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of AB virulence on EM due to bacteremia. This retrospective study included 138 patients with AB bacteremia (age: ≥ 18 years) who were admitted to a tertiary care teaching hospital in South Korea between 2015 and 2019. EM was defined as death occurring within 7 days of bacteremia onset. The AB clinical isolates obtained from the patients' blood cultures were injected into 15 Galleria mellonella larvae each, which were incubated for 5 days. Clinical isolates were classified into high- and low-virulence groups based on the number of dead larvae. Patients' clinical data were combined and subjected to multivariate Cox regression analyses to identify the risk factors for EM. In total, 48/138 (34.8%) patients died within 7 days of bacteremia onset. The Pitt bacteremia score was the only risk factor associated with EM. Hard ticks are known vectors of various pathogens, including the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, Rickettsia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Borrelia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Ehrlichia spp. This study aims to investigate the distribution and prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in southwestern Korea from 2019 to 2022. A total of 13,280 ticks were collected during the study period, with H. longicornis accounting for 86.1% of the collected ticks. H. flava, I. nipponensis and A. testudinarium comprised 9.4%, 3.6%, and 0.8% of the ticks, respectively. Among 983 pools tested, Rickettsia spp. (216 pools, 1.6% MIR) were the most prevalent pathogens across all tick species, with R. japonica and R. monacensis frequently detected in I. nipponensis and Haemaphysalis spp., respectively. Borrelia spp. (28 pools, 0.2% MIR) were predominantly detected in I. nipponensis (27 pools, 13.8% MIR, P < 0.001). Co-infections, mainly involving Rickettsia monacensis and Borrelia afzelii, were detected in I. nipponensis. Notably, this study identified R. monacensis for the first time in A. testudinarium in South Korea. Many studies sought to demonstrate the association between smoking and fracture risk. However, the correlation between smoking and fractures remains controversial. This study aimed to examine the impact of smoking and smoking cessation on the occurrence of fractures using prospective nationwide cohort data. We enrolled those who underwent a National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) health checkup in 2009-2010 who had a previous health checkup 4-year prior (2005-2006). The study population of 4,028,559 subjects was classified into three groups (non-smoker, smoking cessation, current smoker). The study population was also analyzed according to fracture type (all fractures, vertebral fracture, hip fracture). Lastly, the smoking cessation group and current smoker group were divided into four subgroups based on a lifetime smoking amount cut-off of 20 pack-years (PY). Multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of fracture were examined through a Cox proportional hazards model. After multivariable adjustment, non-smokers showed the lowest risk of fracture (HR = 0.818, CI 0.807-0.828, p < 0.0001) and smoking cessation significantly lowered the risk of fracture (HR 0.938, 95% CI 0.917-0.959, p < 0.0001) compared to current smokers. Regardless of 20PY, all smoking cessation subgroups showed significantly less risk of fractures than current smokers with ≥ 20PYs. We investigated the agreement between the jugular bulb (JB) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lactate levels. The study was conducted from July 2021 to June 2023 as a prospective observational cohort study at a single center. The right jugular vein was accessed, and the placement of JB catheter tip was confirmed using lateral cervical spine X-ray. A lumbar catheter was inserted between the 3rd and 4th lumbar spine of the patient. Lactate levels were measured immediately, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h after ROSC. In patients with a good neurological prognosis, kappa between JB and CSF lactate levels measured immediately, at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h after ROSC were 0.08, 0.36, 0.14, - 0.05 (p = 0.65, 0.06, 0.48, and 0.75, respectively). However, in patients with a poor neurological prognosis, kappa between JB and CSF lactate levels measured immediately, at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h after ROSC were 0.38, 0.21, 0.22, 0.12 (p = 0.001, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.27, respectively). This study demonstrated that JB lactate levels exhibited significant agreement with arterial lactate levels, compared to CSF lactate levels. The fighter pilots exposed to high gravitational (G) acceleration must perform anti-G maneuvers similar to the Valsalva maneuver. However, the effects of high-G acceleration and anti-G maneuvers on cardiac function have rarely been studied. This study aimed to investigate the effects of high-G forces on cardiac function of fighter pilots. Fighter pilots who underwent regular health check-ups and echocardiography were included (n = 29; 100% men, 41 ± 10 years old; mean flight time, 1821 ± 1186 h). Trainees who had not experienced any flights were included in the control group (n = 16; 100% men, 36 ± 17 years old). Echocardiographic data included left ventricular chamber size, systolic and diastolic functions, right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), inferior vena cava (IVC) collapsibility, and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE). No significant differences in left ventricular ejection fraction, RVSP, or IVC collapsibility were observed between two groups. In the multivariate linear regression analysis with total flight time as an independent continuous variable for fighter pilots, TAPSE was positively correlated with total flight time. The extent of surgical resection is an important prognostic factor in the treatment of patients with glioblastoma. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging is one of the adjunctive methods available to achieve the maximal surgical resection. In this study, the tumor margins were visualized with the OCT image obtained from a murine glioma model. A commercialized human glioblastoma cell line (U-87) was employed to develop the orthotopic murine glioma model. A swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) system of 1300 nm was used for three-dimensional imaging. Based on the OCT intensity signal, which was obtained via accumulation of each A-scan data, an en-face optical attenuation coefficient (OAC) map was drawn. Due to the limited working distance of the focused beam, OAC values decrease with depth, and using the OAC difference in the superficial area was chosen to outline the tumor boundary, presenting a challenge in analyzing the tumor margin along the depth direction. To overcome this and enable three-dimensional tumor margin detection, we converted the en-face OAC map into an en-face difference map with x- and y-directions and computed the normalized absolute difference (NAD) at each depth to construct a volumetric NAD map, which was compared with the corresponding H&E-stained image. The proposed method successfully revealed the tumor margin along the peripheral boundaries as well as the margin depth. Recent studies reported the long-term cardiovascular risk of preeclampsia. However, only a few studies have investigated the association between preeclampsia and long-term cardiovascular disease in Asian populations, although there could be racial/ethnic differences in the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of preeclampsia on cardiovascular disease in an Asian population. This study included 68,658 parous women in the Health Examinees Study (HEXA) cohort of South Korea and compared the risk of long-term cardiovascular disease, including ischemic heart disease and stroke, according to the history of preeclampsia. We also performed a meta-analysis combining current study data with data from existing literature in the Asian population. Among the study population, 3413 (5.23%) women had a history of preeclampsia, and 767 (1.12%) and 404 (0.59%) women developed ischemic heart disease and stroke for 22 years. Women with a history of preeclampsia were at a higher risk for both ischemic heart disease (adjusted hazard ratio 1.66 [1.19-2.04]) and stroke (adjusted hazard ratio 1.48 [1.02-2.16]) than those without. Administration of sedatives for post-resuscitation care can complicate the determination of the optimal timing to avoid inappropriate, pessimistic prognostications. This prospective study aimed to investigate the distribution and elimination kinetics of midazolam (MDZ) and its metabolites, and their association with awakening time. The concentrations of MDZ and its seven metabolites were measured immediately and at 4, 8, 12, and 24 h after the discontinuation of MDZ infusion, using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The area under the time-plasma concentration curve from 0 to 24 h after MDZ discontinuation (AUC last ) was calculated based on the trapezoidal rule. Of the 15 enrolled patients, seven awakened after the discontinuation of MDZ infusion. MDZ and three of its metabolites were major compounds and their elimination kinetics followed a first-order elimination profile. In the multivariable analysis, only MDZ was associated with awakening time (AUC last : R 2  = 0.59, p = 0.03; AUC inf : R 2  = 0.96, p < 0.001). Specifically, a 0.001% increase in MDZ AUC was associated with a 1% increase in awakening time. In the individual regression analysis between MDZ concentration and awakening time, the mean MDZ concentration at awakening time was 16.8 ng/mL. Lymph node metastases are a major prognostic factor in survival of patients with oesophageal cancer. The number of lymph nodes removed during oesophagectomy has been previously proven to be associated with improved survival. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of lymph node harvest on survival specifically in pathologically node negative (pN0) patients with oesophageal cancer. Data were extracted from a prospectively populated single-surgeon database of oesophageal resections for cancer. All consecutive patients with pN0 were included. Patient-specific risk adjusted analysis of overall and disease-free survival was performed to identify the number of lymph nodes associated with improved survival. Inclusion criteria were met by 137 patients (49 squamous cell carcinoma and 88 adenocarcinoma). Adjusted for cancer stage, tumour (histological type, degree of differentiation, lympho-vascular invasion, neo-adjuvant therapy) and patient related factors (age, sex), increased lymph node number was associated with significant improvement in overall (P = 0.045) and disease free (P = 0.030) survival. Lymph node count ≥ 17 was associated with improved overall and disease-free survival. The treatment of gallbladder (GB) stones depends on condition severity. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) are commonly used to treat GB stones, but the factors affecting response rates have not been fully identified. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between response to UDCA/CDCA treatment and changes in the gut microbiomes of patients with GB stones with the intention of identifying gut microbiomes that predict susceptibility to UDCA/CDCA treatment and treatment response. In this preliminary, prospective study, 13 patients with GB stones were treated with UDCA/CDCA for 6 months. Patients were classified into responder and non-responder groups based on treatment outcomes. Gut microbiomes were analyzed by 16S rDNA sequencing. Taxonomic compositions and abundances of bacterial communities were analyzed before and after UDCA/CDCA treatment. Alpha and beta diversities were used to assess similarities between organismal compositions. In addition, PICRUSt2 analysis was conducted to identify gut microbial functional pathways. Thirteen patients completed the treatment; 8 (62%) were assigned to the responder group and the remainder to the non-responder group. Low abundances of the Erysipelotrichi lineage were significantly associated with favorable response to UDCA/CDCA treatment, whereas high abundances of Firmicutes phylum indicated no or poor response. Our results suggest that a low abundance of the Erysipelotrichi lineage is significantly associated with a favorable response to UDCA/CDCA and that a high abundance of Firmicutes phylum is indicative of no or poor response. These findings suggest that some gut microbiomes are susceptible to UDCA/CDCA treatment and could be used to predict treatment response in patients with GB stones., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Examining kidney fibrosis is crucial for mechanistic understanding and developing targeted strategies against chronic kidney disease (CKD). Persistent fibroblast activation and tubular epithelial cell (TEC) injury are key CKD contributors. However, cellular and transcriptional landscapes of CKD and specific activated kidney fibroblast clusters remain elusive. Here, we analyzed single cell transcriptomic profiles of two clinically relevant kidney fibrosis models which induced robust kidney parenchymal remodeling. We dissected the molecular and cellular landscapes of kidney stroma and newly identified three distinctive fibroblast clusters with "secretory", "contractile" and "vascular" transcriptional enrichments. Also, both injuries generated failed repair TECs (frTECs) characterized by decline of mature epithelial markers and elevation of stromal and injury markers. Notably, frTECs shared transcriptional identity with distal nephron segments of the embryonic kidney. Moreover, we identified that both models exhibited robust and previously unrecognized distal spatial pattern of TEC injury, outlined by persistent elevation of renal TEC injury markers including Krt8 and Vcam1, while the surviving proximal tubules (PTs) showed restored transcriptional signature. We also found that long-term kidney injuries activated a prominent nephrogenic signature, including Sox4 and Hox gene elevation, which prevailed in the distal tubular segments. The risk factor for cholelithiasis include low physical activity. With an aging society, the number of bedridden patients who undergo percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has increased, and cholelithiasis has often been found in these patients. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors correlated with cholelithiasis in adults who underwent PEG. This retrospective single-center design study reviewed patients who underwent PEG and were confirmed to have cholelithiasis through imaging from March 1996 to December 2021. The investigated variables were age, sex, body mass index (BMI, kg/m 2 ), cause of PEG insertion, initial physical activity status, laboratory findings on PEG insertion day, and incidence of acute cholecystitis. The differences between categorical and continuous variables were analyzed using Student's t test and chi-square test. We enrolled 576 eligible patients who underwent PEG insertion. A total of 161 patients were detected with cholelithiasis (28.0%). The overall independent risk factors for cholelithiasis in patients who underwent PEG insertion were increased C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and decreased physical activity status (bedridden state). The incidence of cholelithiasis was increased by up to 30.7%, especially in patients with bedridden status. However, the incidence of acute cholecystitis among cholelithiasis group was only 5.6%. BMI and total cholesterol were positively correlated with the size of gallbladder (GB) stones. One of the major risk factors for cholelithiasis is decreased physical activity, especially in patients who underwent PEG insertion. Abdominal imaging is recommended to confirm the presence of cholelithiasis and to consider prophylaxis for cholelithiasis, especially in bedridden patients with elevated initial CRP levels at the time of PEG insertion., (© 2023. This study investigated the prognostic performance of combination strategies using a multimodal approach in patients treated after cardiac arrest. Prospectively collected registry data were used for this retrospective analysis. Poor outcome was defined as a cerebral performance category of 3-5 at 6 months. Predictors of poor outcome were absence of ocular reflexes (PR/CR) without confounding factors, a highly malignant pattern on the most recent electroencephalography, defined as suppressed background with or without periodic discharges and burst-suppression, high neuron-specific enolase (NSE) after 48 h, and diffuse injury on imaging studies (computed tomography or diffusion-weighted imaging [DWI]) at 72-96 h. The prognostic performances for poor outcomes were analyzed for sensitivity and specificity. A total of 130 patients were included in the analysis. Of these, 68 (52.3%) patients had poor outcomes. The best prognostic performance was observed with the combination of absent PR/CR, high NSE, and diffuse injury on DWI [91.2%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 80.7-97.1], whereas the combination strategy of all available predictors did not improve prognostic performance (87.8%, 95% CI 73.8-95.9). Many patients in Korea use Korean Medicine (KM) after spine surgery, but related research is lacking. Therefore, this retrospective cohort study aimed to analyze factors affecting the use and costs of KM using nationally representative data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, South Korea. Patients who underwent spinal surgery for spinal diseases from 2011 to 2014 were followed up for 5 years, and their medical care was described. The association between patient and spinal surgery characteristics and the use of KM was analyzed. A two-part model was used to analyze factors affecting the use of KM in patients undergoing spinal surgery. Of 11,802 patients who underwent spinal surgery, 11,367 who met the inclusion criteria were included. Overall, 55.5% were female, 32.3% were aged ≥ 70 years, and 50.2% received KM treatment during the follow-up period. Open discectomy was the most common surgical procedure performed (58.6%), and 40.2% of surgeries were performed because of lumbar disc disorder. Female sex, older age, high Charlson Comorbidity Index score, and use of KM before surgery were associated with increased KM use and expenditure after surgery. In conclusion, patient characteristics, rather than surgical characteristics, appeared to be more strongly associated with the use of KM after surgery, particularly prior experience with KM use. This study is significant in that it analyzed the entire spine surgery to provide a comprehensive view of the use of KM after spine surgery and analyzed the impact of various factors related patients and surgical characteristics on KM use. This study aimed to investigate the effects of shift work on periodontal disease in blue-and white-collar workers and to examine the interaction effects between occupation and work patterns. Data were collected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare for a total of nine years from 2007 to 2015. Participants with missing outcome variables were excluded from the analysis and a total of 32,336 participants were included in the final analysis. Univariable odds ratios (OR) were calculated using a logistic regression model with 95% confidence interval (CI). A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed using the backward elimination method. The CONTRAST statement was used to analyze the interaction effect between occupation and work patterns. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that interaction effects are present between the terms, occupational type and work pattern. Crude OR of shift work for periodontitis was 1.269 [CI 1.213-1.327, P < 0.05]. However, following adjustment for multiple confounding factors and the interaction effect term considered, this OR (1.269) increased to 1.381 [CI 1.253-1.523] in white-collar group while it decreased to 1.198 [1.119-1.283] in blue-collar. Crude OR of blue-collar (OR = 3.123, CI 2.972-3.281, P < 0.05) decreased to 1.151 [CI 1.049-1.262] when interaction effect to the shift work was considered. Shift work pattern increases the risk for periodontitis and this adverse effect is greater when white-collar workers are engaged comparing to blue-collar. The result of this study suggests that 24/7 lifestyle of the modern society poses health risks to the relevant people and the potential harm can be greater to white-collar workers., (© 2023. Mud dauber wasps construct soil nests to protect their offspring from predators, extreme temperatures, and rainwater. The mechanical and thermal properties of these nests are important for the reproductive success of mud daubers. The previous study showed that the high densities and strengths of mud dauber nests were due to the repetitive tapping and atmospheric drying used by mud daubers during nest construction. This study investigated the effect of atmospheric drying on the mechanical and thermal properties of mud dauber nests. The soil shrinkage curve, elastic modulus, suction stress characteristic curve, soil water retention curve, shear strength, and thermal conductivity function of mud dauber nest soils were measured by performing drying cake tests, direct shear tests, unconfined compression tests, and thermal conductivity measurements. This study showed atmospheric drying could increase Young's moduli (from hundreds to thousands of kPa), the magnitudes of suction stress (up to 64 kPa), and shear strengths (e.g., unconfined compressive strength increased up to 2100 kPa) of mud dauber nests. The thermal conductivity was reduced by 47% due to atmospheric drying. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy has emerged as a promising modality for anti-cancer treatment. Its efficacy is quite remarkable in hematological tumors. Owing to their excellent clinical results, gene- modified cell therapies, including T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and macrophages, are being actively studied in both academia and industry. However, the protocol to make CAR immune cells is too complicated, so it is still unclear how to efficiently produce the potent CAR immune cells. To manufacture effective CAR immune cells, we need to be aware of not only how to obtain highly infective viral particles, but also how to transduce CAR genes into immune cells. In this paper, we provide detailed information on spinoculation, which is one of the best known protocols to transduce genes into immune cells, in a methodological view. Our data indicate that gene transduction is significantly dependent on speed and duration of centrifugation, concentration and number of viral particles, the concentration of polybrene, and number of infected immune cells. In addition, we investigated on the optimal polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution to concentrate the viral supernatant and the optimized DNA ratios transfected into 293T cells to produce high titer of viral particles. Rifampicin is an important agent for tuberculosis treatment; however, it is often discontinued because of adverse reactions. The treatment regimen then can be administered as that for rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis, which can be toxic. We retrospectively reviewed 114 patients with drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis who discontinued rifampicin due to adverse reactions during an 18 year period at a tertiary referral center, of which 92 (80.7%) exhibited favorable response. Hepatotoxicity was the leading cause of intolerance. Patients with a favorable response were younger and less likely to have comorbidities. The majority of patients were administered four medications during the intensive phase and three to four during the consolidative phase. For those with a favorable response, the median duration of treatment was 10.2 months and the most common intensive regimen was a combination of isoniazid, ethambutol, pyrazinamide, and fluoroquinolone (25%). The most common consolidation regimen was a combination of isoniazid, ethambutol, and fluoroquinolone (22.8%). Among the patients with a favorable response, two (2.2%) experienced recurrence after a follow-up of 3.4 (interquartile range 1.8-6.8) years. For patients with drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis who do not tolerate rifampicin owing to its toxicity, a shorter regimen may be a useful alternative., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

We compared neural activities and network properties between the antihistamine-induced seizures (AIS) and seizure-free groups, with the hypothesis that patients with AIS might have inherently increased neural activities and network properties that are easily synchronized. Resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) data were collected from 27 AIS patients and 30 healthy adults who had never had a seizure. Power spectral density analysis was used to compare neural activities in each localized region. Functional connectivity (FC) was measured using coherence, and graph theoretical analyses were performed to compare network properties between the groups. Machine learning algorithms were applied using measurements found to be different between the groups in the EEG analyses as input features. Compared with the seizure-free group, the AIS group showed a higher spectral power in the entire regions of the delta, theta, and beta bands, as well as in the frontal areas of the alpha band. The AIS group had a higher overall FC strength, as well as a shorter characteristic path length in the theta band and higher global efficiency, local efficiency, and clustering coefficient in the beta band than the seizure-free group. The Support Vector Machine, k-Nearest Neighbor, and Random Forest models distinguished the AIS group from the seizure-free group with a high accuracy of more than 99%. The AIS group had seizure susceptibility considering both regional neural activities and functional network properties. A uniform prognostic marker is needed for nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) due to the diverse clinical course. We aimed to seek the utility of the BACES score, originally derived to predict all-cause mortality, for various outcomes. To calculate the BACES score, one point was given for each of the following factors: body mass index < 18.5 kg/m 2 , age ≥ 65 years, presence of cavities, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, or male sex. The study included 681 patients, of whom 97 (14.2%), 189 (27.7%), 192 (28.2%), 143 (21.0%), 47 (6.9%), and 13 (1.9%) had BACES scores of 0 to 5. Those with greater BACES scores were more likely to experience dyspnea, body weight loss, and anorexia. With severe disease, the risk of disease progression increased while the rate of treatment culture conversion decreased. After adjustment of comorbidities, higher BACES score was independently associated with the risk of mortality from respiratory causes or infection. As a simple and efficient bedside tool for assessing the severity of NTM-PD, the BACES score has the potential to be utilized as a surrogate marker for uniform severity assessment., (© 2023. Nano plastics (NPs) have been a significant threat to human health and are known to cause premature endothelial senescence. Endothelial senescence is considered one of the primary risk factors contributing to numerous cardiovascular disorders. Recent studies have suggested that inhibition of sodium glucose co-transporter (SGLT2) ameliorates endothelial senescence and dysfunction. Therefore, our study intends to explore the role of SGLT2 in NPs-induced endothelial senescence and dysfunction. Porcine coronary artery and its endothelial cells were treated with NPs in the presence or absence of Enavogliflozin (ENA), a SGLT2 inhibitor and then SGLTs expression, senescence markers and vascular function were evaluated. NPs significantly up-regulated SGLT2 and ENA significantly decreased NPs-induced senescence-associated-β-gal activity, cell-cycle arrest, and senescence markers p53 and p21 suggesting that inhibition of SGLT2 prevents NPs-induced endothelial senescence. In addition, ENA decreased the formation of reactive oxygen species with the downregulation of Nox2, and p22 phox . Furthermore, SGLT2 inhibition also up regulated the endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression along with improving vascular function. In conclusion, premature endothelial senescence by NPs is, at least in part, associated with SGLT2 and it could be a potential therapeutic target for preventing and/or treating environmental pollutants-induced cardiovascular disorders mediated by endothelial senescence and dysfunction., (© 2023. Disparities exist between sexes regarding tuberculosis (TB) incidence, as well as disease severity and outcome. Using a nationwide TB registry database, we explored the impact of sex and age on extrapulmonary TB (EPTB) among all enrolled patients by (1) calculating the female proportion for every age category according to TB-affected locations, (2) calculating the proportions of EPTB stratified by sex according to age, (3) conducting multivariable analysis to examine the impact of sex and age on EPTB likelihood, and (4) assessing the odds of EPTB for female compared to male as reference in every age category. Further, we explored the impact of sex and age on disease severity among pulmonary TB (PTB) patients. Of all the TB patients, 40.1% were female, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.49. The proportion of females was lowest in their fifties, resembling a U-shape. The male-to-female ratios in PTB and EPTB were 1.67 and 1.03, respectively. Compared to men, women were significantly associated with EPTB in their forties, fifties, and sixties. Female patients with PTB had significantly lower odds of having cavitation and positive smear test results in their fifties. In this study, we aimed to comprehensively characterize the microbiomes of various samples from pregnant women and their neonates, and to explore the similarities and associations between mother-neonate pairs, sample collection sites, and obstetrical factors. We collected samples from vaginal discharge and amniotic fluid in pregnant women and umbilical cord blood, gastric liquid, and meconium from neonates. We identified 19,597,239 bacterial sequences from 641 samples of 141 pregnant women and 178 neonates. By applying rigorous filtering criteria to remove contaminants, we found evidence of microbial colonization in traditionally considered sterile intrauterine environments and the fetal gastrointestinal track. The microbiome distribution was strongly grouped by sample collection site, rather than the mother-neonate pairs. The distinct bacterial composition in meconium, the first stool passed by newborns, supports that microbial colonization occurs during normal pregnancy. The microbiome in neonatal gastric liquid was similar, but not identical, to that in maternal amnionic fluid, as expected since fetuses swallow amnionic fluid in utero and their urine returns to the fluid under normal physiological conditions. Higher blood monocyte counts are related to worse survival in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. However, studies evaluating the association between blood monocyte counts and clinical outcomes of idiopathic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (iNSIP) are lacking. We evaluated the impact of monocyte counts on iNSIP prognosis. iNSIP patients (n = 126; median age, 60 years; female, n = 64 [50.8%]) diagnosed by surgical lung biopsy were enrolled and categorized into low (monocyte < 600/µL) and high (monocyte ≥ 600/µL) monocyte groups. The median follow-up duration was 53.0 months. After adjusting for age, sex, and smoking history, the annual decline in forced vital capacity (FVC) showed differences between the monocyte groups (P interaction  = 0.006) (low vs. high; - 28.49 mL/year vs. - 65.76 mL/year). The high-monocyte group showed a worse survival rate (P = 0.01) compared to low monocyte group. The 5-year survival rates were 83% and 72% in the low- and high-monocyte groups, respectively. In the Cox-proportional hazard analysis, older age, male sex, low baseline FVC, and diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide were independent risk factors for mortality. However, monocyte count (Hazard ratio 1.61, P = 0.126) was not an independent prognostic factor. Endoscopic tattooing with India ink is a popular method for identifying colonic lesions during minimally invasive surgery because it is highly challenging to localize lesions during laparoscopy. However, there is a perceived unmet need for the injection of India ink and carbon particle suspension due to various complications and inconstant durability during the perioperative period. In this study, carbon black-containing self-healing adhesive alginate/polyvinyl alcohol composite hydrogels were synthesized as endoscopic tattooing inks. Alginate (Alg) conjugated with phenylboronic acid (PBA) groups in the backbone was crosslinked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) because of the dynamic bonds between the phenylboronic acid in alginate and the cis-diol groups of PVA. The carbon black-incorporated Alg-PBA/PVA hydrogels exhibited self-healing and re-shapable properties, indicating that improved intraoperative localization could be achieved. In addition, the adhesive tattooing hydrogels were stably immobilized on the target regions in the intraperitoneal spaces. Auscultation, a cost-effective and non-invasive part of physical examination, is essential to diagnose pediatric respiratory disorders. Electronic stethoscopes allow transmission, storage, and analysis of lung sounds. We aimed to develop a machine learning model to classify pediatric respiratory sounds. Lung sounds were digitally recorded during routine physical examinations at a pediatric pulmonology outpatient clinic from July to November 2019 and labeled as normal, crackles, or wheezing. Ensemble support vector machine models were trained and evaluated for four classification tasks (normal vs. abnormal, crackles vs. wheezing, normal vs. crackles, and normal vs. wheezing) using K-fold cross-validation (K = 10). Model performance on a prospective validation set (June to July 2021) was compared with those of pediatricians and non-pediatricians. Total 680 clips were used for training and internal validation. The model accuracies during internal validation for normal vs. abnormal, crackles vs. wheezing, normal vs. crackles, and normal vs. wheezing were 83.68%, 83.67%, 80.94%, and 90.42%, respectively. The prospective validation (n = 90) accuracies were 82.22%, 67.74%, 67.80%, and 81.36%, respectively, which were comparable to pediatrician and non-pediatrician performance. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index was proposed as a useful marker of metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance, the main mechanism underlying metabolic syndrome, is related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This study aimed to elucidate the association between the TyG index and GERD/erosive reflux disease (ERD). We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of patients who underwent gastroduodenoscopy at a checkup center. The calculation of TyG index used following formula: ln (fasting triglycerides [mg/dL] × fasting glucose [mg/dL]/2). We divided the patients into four groups according to the TyG index quartile (Q). We evaluated the relationship between the alteration of the TyG index and GERD in patients who received health checkups two times. Among the 52,605 enrolled patients, 3073 (5.8%) and 434 (0.8%) were diagnosed with GERD and ERD, respectively. The odds ratios (ORs) for GERD in the TyG index progressively increased across quartiles (P < 0.001): Q2 (OR = 2.477), Q3 (OR = 3.013), and Q4 (OR = 4.027) compared with Q1, which was used as a reference, respectively. Those for ERD also progressively increased across quartiles (P < 0.001): Q2 (OR = 4.264), Q3 (OR = 4.841), and Q4 (OR = 7.390) compared with Q1, respectively. Moreover, the degree of TyG index increase during the first and second tests in the GERD group was more prominent than in the control group (P = 0.001). Plant variety protection is essential for breeders' rights granted by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. Distinctness, uniformity, and stability (DUS) are necessary for new variety registration; to this end, currently, morphological traits are examined, which is time-consuming and laborious. Molecular markers are more effective, accurate, and stable descriptors of DUS. Advancements in next-generation sequencing technology have facilitated genome-wide identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms. Here, we developed a core set of single nucleotide polymorphism markers to identify cabbage varieties and traits of test guidance through clustering using the Fluidigm assay, a high-throughput genotyping system. Core sets of 87, 24, and 10 markers are selected based on a genome-wide association-based approach. All core markers could identify 94 cabbage varieties and determine 17 DUS traits. There have been limited studies on the association between prognosis and body weight change in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). This single-center retrospective observational study evaluated the impact of weight loss on outcomes in Korean patients with IPF receiving pirfenidone at a tertiary medical institution. We analyzed 215 IPF patients prescribed pirfenidone from January 1st, 2015 to December 31st, 2019. The patients were categorized into maintained weight (MW; weight gain or loss < 5%/year) and reduced weight (RW; weight loss ≥ 5%/year) groups. The mean age was 71.8 years and 175 (81.4%) were male. There were 54 (25.1%) patients in the RW group. All patients showed a decrease in body weight (baseline vs. after 1 year; 64.1 kg vs. 62.8 kg, P < 0.001). Although baseline lung function showed a difference, there was no difference in the rate of change (forced vital capacity [% of predicted]; P = 0.221, diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide [% of predicted]; P = 0.973). The MW group had a lower risk of all-cause mortality (P < 0.001). Weight loss appeared to be a significant risk factor for mortality in patients with IPF. The clinical implication of using serum tumor markers in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) is inconclusive. In this retrospective study, we analyzed the data of 1176 subjects (294 with ILDs and 882 healthy controls). Eligible patients were who had at least one or more available tumor marker results [carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9, CA 125, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)] with no evidence of malignancies or other benign diseases that could be related to the increasing concentration of the values. The healthy controls selected from a health screening program were also screened for the presence of active cancer, and matched at a ratio of 1:3 with age and sex. The proportion of patients with abnormal values in the ILD group (121, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF); 173, non-IPF-ILDs) was higher than in the matched control group (CEA, 21.5% vs. 5.5%; CA 19-9, 27.9% vs. 4.0%; CA 125, 36.4% vs. 2.0%). In the multivariable analysis, higher CEA levels were associated with shorter survival after adjusting for age, sex, lung function, and ILD subtypes (hazard ratio: 2.323, 95% confidence interval: 1.271-4.248, P = 0.006). Clinical guidelines recommend several risk factors to identify women in early pregnancy at high risk of developing pregnancy-associated hypertension. However, these variables result in low predictive accuracy. Here, we developed a prediction model for pregnancy-associated hypertension using graph-based semi-supervised learning. This is a secondary analysis of a prospective study of healthy pregnant women. To develop the prediction model, we compared the prediction performances across five machine learning methods (semi-supervised learning with both labeled and unlabeled data, semi-supervised learning with labeled data only, logistic regression, support vector machine, and random forest) using three different variable sets: [a] variables from clinical guidelines, [b] selected important variables from the feature selection, and [c] all routine variables. Additionally, the proposed prediction model was compared with placental growth factor, a predictive biomarker for pregnancy-associated hypertension. The study population consisted of 1404 women, including 1347 women with complete follow-up (labeled data) and 57 women with incomplete follow-up (unlabeled data). Among the 1347 with complete follow-up, 2.4% (33/1347) developed pregnancy-associated HTN. Graph-based semi-supervised learning using top 11 variables achieved the best average prediction performance (mean area under the curve (AUC) of 0.89 in training set and 0.81 in test set), with higher sensitivity (72.7% vs 45.5% in test set) and similar specificity (80.0% vs 80.5% in test set) compared to risk factors from clinical guidelines. In addition, our proposed model with graph-based SSL had a higher performance than that of placental growth factor for total study population (AUC, 0.71 vs. 0.80, p &lt; 0.001). The association of inadequate dietary sodium intake with bone mineral density (BMD) and the risk of osteoporosis is controversial. To find the association between low sodium diet and the risk of incipient osteoporosis, we performed a population-based cross-sectional analysis using Tanaka method for estimation 24-h urinary sodium excretion (e24hUNaE Tanaka ) as a candidate indicator of sodium intake. We identified 3869 participants without osteoporosis and classified them into quartiles according to their value of e24hUNaE Tanaka . BMD was measured to find participants at risk of osteoporosis. Lower e24hUNaE Tanaka was related to decreasing BMD of the distal radius. Multiple Cox-proportional hazard models demonstrated that e24hUNaE Tanaka had an inverse association with the risk of osteoporosis (adjusted HR = 0.859, 95% CI = 0.751-0.982) and survival analysis revealed that the lowest quartile group had poor osteoporosis-free survival (P Log-rank  < 0.0001). Furthermore, our restricted cubic spline analysis revealed that the relationship between e24hUNaE Tanaka and HR of osteoporosis was negative curvilinear in males and postmenopausal females and positive linear in premenopausal females. In South Korea, public-private mix (PPM) was launched in 2011. This retrospective cohort study sought to determine the rate of loss to follow-up (LTFU) among drug-susceptible tuberculosis (DS-TB) patients in all nationwide PPM institutions, and the risk factors for LTFU. National notification data for DS-TB patients diagnosed between August 2011 and July 2014 in PPM institutions were analysed. Determination of LTFU included detection of instances where patients were transferred out, but when they did not attend at other TB centres in the following two months. Univariable and multivariable competing risk models were used to determine risk factors for LTFU. 73,046 patients with 78,485 records were enrolled. Nominally, 3426 (4.4%) of records were LTFU. However, after linking the multiple records in each patient, the percentage of LTFU was 12.3% (9004/73,046). Risk factors for LTFU were: being foreign-born (3.13 (95% CI 2.77-3.53)), prior LTFU (2.31 (2.06-2.59)) and greater distance between the patient's home and the TB centre (4.27 (4.03-4.53)). 'Transfer-out' was a risk factor in patients managed by treatment centres close to home (1.65 (1.49-1.83)), but protective for those attending centres further (0.77 (0.66-0.89)) or far-away (0.52 (0.46-0.59)) from home. By considering the complete picture of a patient's interactions with healthcare, we identified a much higher level of LTFU than previously documented. This has implications for how outcomes of treatment are reported and argues for a joined-up national approach for the management and surveillance of TB patients, in nations with similar healthcare systems., (© 2022. The optimized ALD infilling process for depositing Al 2 O 3 in the vertical direction of PbS QDs enhances the photoresponsivity, relaxation rate and the air stability of PbS QDs hybrid IGZO NIR phototransistors. Infilled Al 2 O 3 , which is gradually deposited from the top of PbS QDs to the PbS/IGZO interface (1) passivates the trap sites up to the interface of PbS/IGZO without disturbing charge transfer and (2) prevents QDs deterioration caused by outside air. Therefore, an Al 2 O 3 infilled PbS QD/IGZO hybrid phototransistor (AI-PTs) exhibited enhanced photoresponsivity from 96.4 A/W to 1.65 × 10 2 A/W and a relaxation time decrease from 0.52 to 0.03 s under NIR light (880 nm) compared to hybrid phototransistors without Al 2 O 3 (RF-PTs). In addition, AI-PTs also showed improved shelf stability over 4 months compared to RF-PTs. Sargassum horneri is a major bloom forming species in Korea and China. It is important to find a way to utilize the huge biomass of Sargassum horneri in the region. Seaweed-derived biostimulants are primarily derived from brown algae and are known to improve terrestrial crop growth and tolerance to abiotic stresses. Neopyropia yezoensis is the most important seaweed cultured species in Korea, and research is required to increase heat resistance as a solution against climate change. In this study, various extraction methods were used to obtain Sargassum horneri extract, and it was applied to Neopyropia yezoensis to evaluate the effect on physiological activity. Metabolites of Sargassum horneri were extracted by using four different methods: boiling (SBE), soaking (SSE), autoclaving (SAE) and ethanol (SEE). The SBE, SSE and SAE derived extracts showed increased tolerance to high-temperature stress that had inhibited the growth of Neopyropia yezoensis, and show improved growth compared to the control group. The SBE and SSE extraction methods improved the content of phycobiliprotein, but also the SBE increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Estimating the time delay and identifying associated factors is essential for effective tuberculosis control. We systemically analysed data obtained from the Korea Tuberculosis Cohort in 2019 by classifying delays as presentation and healthcare delays of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Of 6593 patients with active PTB, presentation and healthcare delays were recorded in 4151 and 5571 patients, respectively. The median presentation delay was 16.0 (5.0-40.0) days. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that longer presentation delays were associated with neuropsychiatric disease [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.098; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.639-2.687; p < 0.001] and heavy alcohol intake (adjusted OR 1.505; 95% CI 1.187-1.907; p < 0.001). The median healthcare delay was 5.0 (1.0-14.0) days. A longer healthcare delay was associated with malignancy (adjusted OR 1.351; 95% CI 1.069-1.709; p = 0.012), autoimmune disease (adjusted OR 2.445; 95% CI 1.295-4.617; p = 0.006), and low bacterial burden manifested as an acid-fast bacillus smear-negative and tuberculosis polymerase chain reaction-negative status (adjusted OR 1.316; 95% CI 1.104-1.569; p = 0.002). Active case-finding programmes need to focus on patients with heavy alcoholism or neuropsychiatric diseases. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease, and its incidence is predicted to increase worldwide. Striatal dopamine depletion caused by substantia nigra (SN) degeneration is a pathological hallmark of PD and is strongly associated with cardinal motor and non-motor symptoms. Previous studies have reported that exercise increases neuroplasticity and promotes neurorestoration by increasing neurotrophic factors and synaptic strength and stimulating neurogenesis in PD. In the present study, we found that rotarod walking exercise, a modality of motor skill learning training, improved locomotor disturbances and reduced nigrostriatal degeneration in the subacute 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) mouse model of PD. In addition, our exercise regimen improved MPTP-induced perturbation of adult neurogenesis in some areas of the brain, including the subventricular zone, subgranular zone, SN, and striatum. Moreover, rotarod walking activated the phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and induced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in these regions. The results suggest that motor skill learning training using rotarod walking improves adult neurogenesis and restores motor performance by modulating the AMPK/BDNF pathway. Tuberculosis (TB) has a heterogeneous phenotype, which makes it challenging to diagnose. Our study aimed to identify TB phenotypes through cluster analysis and compare their initial symptomatic, microbiological and radiographic characteristics. We systemically collected data of notified TB patients notified in Korea and constructed a prospective, observational cohort database. Cluster analysis was performed using K-means clustering, and the variables to be included were determined by correlation network. A total of 4,370 subjects with pulmonary TB were enrolled in the study. Based on the correlation network, age and body mass index (BMI) were selected for the cluster analysis. Five clusters were identified and characterised as follows: (1) middle-aged overweight male dominance, (2) young-aged relatively female dominance without comorbidities, (3) middle-aged underweight male dominance, (4) overweight elderly with comorbidities and (5) underweight elderly with comorbidities. All clusters had distinct demographic and symptomatic characteristics. Initial microbiologic burdens and radiographic features also varied, including the presence of cavities and bilateral infiltration, which reflect TB-related severity. Cluster analysis of age and BMI identified five phenotypes of pulmonary TB with significant differences at initial clinical presentations. We investigated the association of extracorporeal circuit-based devices with temperature management and neurological outcome in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors who underwent targeted temperature management. Patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and/or continuous renal replacement therapy were classified as the extracorporeal group. We calculated the cooling rate during the induction period and time-weighted core temperatures (TWCT) during the maintenance period. We defined the sum of TWCT above or below 33 °C as positive and negative TWCT, respectively, and the sum of TWCT above 33.5 °C or below 32.5 °C as undercooling or overcooling, respectively. The primary outcome was the negative TWCT. The secondary outcomes were positive TWCT, cooling rate, undercooling, overcooling, and poor neurological outcomes, defined as Cerebral Performance Category 3-5. Among 235 patients, 150 (63.8%) had poor neurological outcomes and 52 (22.1%) were assigned to the extracorporeal group. The extracorporeal group (β, 0.307; p < 0.001) had increased negative TWCT, rapid cooling rate (1.77 °C/h [1.22-4.20] vs. 1.24 °C/h [0.77-1.79]; p = 0.005), lower positive TWCT (33.4 °C∙min [24.9-46.2] vs. 54.6 °C∙min [29.9-87.0]), and higher overcooling (5.01 °C min [0.00-10.08] vs. 0.33 °C min [0.00-3.78]). Individuals with psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) represent a critical group for improving the understanding of vulnerability factors across the psychosis continuum. A growing body of literature has identified functional deficits associated with PLEs. However, it is unclear if such deficits purely reveal the underlying psychosis vulnerability or if they are also linked with comorbid anxiety symptoms. Although anxiety disorders are often associated with impairments in psychosis-risk, symptoms of anxiety may facilitate executive functioning in certain psychosis groups. The Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences was completed to assess psychosis-like symptoms in a total of 57 individuals, and its median score was used to categorize PLE groups (high-PLE = 24, low-PLE = 33). Anxiety symptoms were measured via the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and cognitive flexibility was measured by the Penn Conditional Exclusion Test. The high-PLE group endorsed more anxiety symptoms, demonstrated poorer accuracy and efficiency on the cognitive task, and made more perseverative errors compared to the low-PLE group. Within the high-PLE group, higher levels of anxiety symptoms were associated with better performance and less perseverative errors compared to individuals with lower levels of anxiety symptoms. Conversely, greater anxiety symptoms were associated with poorer performance in the low-PLE group. Taken together, these findings provide a preliminary support for a potential psychosis vulnerability × anxiety symptom interaction. In this study, the chemical decomposition of a polyimide-film (i.e., a PI-film)-surface into a soft-film-surface containing negatively charged pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and neutral 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) was successfully performed. The chemical decomposition was conducted by designing the slurry containing 350 nm colloidal silica abrasive and small molecules with amine functional groups (i.e., ethylenediamine: EDA) for chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP). This chemical decomposition was performed through two types of hydrolysis reactions, that is, a hydrolysis reaction between OH - ions or R-NH 3 + (i.e., EDA with a positively charged amine groups) and oxygen atoms covalently bonded with pyromellitimide on the PI-film-surface. In particular, the degree of slurry adsorption of the PI-film-surface was determined by the EDA concentration in the slurry because of the presence of R-NH 3 + , that is, a higher EDA concentration resulted in a higher degree of slurry adsorption. In addition, during CMP, the chemical decomposition degree of the PI-film-surface was principally determined by the EDA concentration; that is, the degree of chemical composition was increased noticeably and linearly with the EDA concentration. The quality of nest soils has significant effects on reproductive success in mud dauber species. This study investigated the physical and mechanical properties of the nest soils used by mud daubers from a geotechnical engineering perspective. One hundred thirty-one nests of black and yellow mud daubers were collected from five locations in the south of Louisiana. Moisture and organic contents, densities, void ratios, plasticity, grain size distributions, soil classifications, and penetration resistances of the nest soils were measured. Also, the performance of mud daubers' nest-compaction method (i.e., repetitive tapping produced by the front legs and mandibles) was evaluated by comparing the densities and penetration resistances between mud dauber nests and Proctor compacted nest soil samples. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to measure the morphology, elemental composition, and mineralogy of the nest soils. Mud dauber nests were made of hard and very stiff well-graded silty soils. The high strengths and high densities of mud dauber nests were attributed to repetitive tapping (similar to vibratory compaction in geotechnical engineering) used by mud daubers for nest construction, high capillary cohesion in the nest soils, well-graded soil grain size distribution, and clay minerals serving as cementing agents in the nest soils., (© 2022. We compared the cut-off and prognostic value of serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) between groups with and without severe blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption to reveal that a cause of various serum NSE cut-off value for neurological prognosis is severe BBB disruption in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients underwent target temperature management (TTM). This was a prospective, single-centre study conducted from January 2019 to June 2021. Severe BBB disruption was indicated using cerebrospinal fluid-serum albumin quotient values > 0.02. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of serum NSE obtained on day 3 of hospitalisation to predict poor outcomes was used. In patients with poor neurologic outcomes, serum NSE in those with severe BBB disruption was higher than in those without (P = 0.006). A serum NSE cut-off value of 40.4 μg/L for poor outcomes in patients without severe BBB disruption had a sensitivity of 41.7% and a specificity of 96.0%, whereas a cut-off value of 34.6 μg/L in those with severe BBB disruption had a sensitivity of 86.4% and a specificity of 100.0%. The pandemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a public health emergency, and research on the development of various types of vaccines is rapidly progressing at an unprecedented development speed internationally. Some vaccines have already been approved for emergency use and are being supplied to people around the world, but there are still many ongoing efforts to create new vaccines. Virus-like particles (VLPs) enable the construction of promising platforms in the field of vaccine development. Here, we demonstrate that non-infectious SARS-CoV-2 VLPs can be successfully assembled by co-expressing three important viral proteins membrane (M), envelop (E) and nucleocapsid (N) in plants. Plant-derived VLPs were purified by sedimentation through a sucrose cushion. The shape and size of plant-derived VLPs are similar to native SARS-CoV-2 VLPs without spike. Although the assembled VLPs do not have S protein spikes, they could be developed as formulations that can improve the immunogenicity of vaccines including S antigens, and further could be used as platforms that can carry S antigens of concern for various mutations., (© 2022. To assess the utility of machine learning (ML) algorithms in predicting clinically relevant atrial high-rate episodes (AHREs), which can be recorded by a pacemaker. We aimed to develop ML-based models to predict clinically relevant AHREs based on the clinical parameters of patients with implanted pacemakers in comparison to logistic regression (LR). We included 721 patients without known atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter from a prospective multicenter (11 tertiary hospitals) registry comprising all geographical regions of Korea from September 2017 to July 2020. Predictive models of clinically relevant AHREs were developed using the random forest (RF) algorithm, support vector machine (SVM) algorithm, and extreme gradient boosting (XGB) algorithm. Model prediction training was conducted by seven hospitals, and model performance was evaluated using data from four hospitals. During a median follow-up of 18 months, clinically relevant AHREs were noted in 104 patients (14.4%). The three ML-based models improved the discrimination of the AHREs (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve: RF: 0.742, SVM: 0.675, and XGB: 0.745 vs. LR: 0.669). The XGB model had a greater resolution in the Brier score (RF: 0.008, SVM: 0.008, and XGB: 0.021 vs. LR: 0.013) than the other models.
