Abstract An effective strategy for enhancing fruit production continuity during extended sweet pepper season involves adopting innovative biostimulants such as potassium silicate (PS) and vinasse. Adjusting PS and vinasse concentrations are crucial for maintaining the balance between vegetative and fruit growth, particularly in sweet pepper with a shallow root system, to sustain fruiting over prolonged season. However, the interaction between PS and vinasse and the underlying physiological mechanisms that extend the sweet pepper season under greenhouse conditions remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of PS and vinasse treatments on the yield and biochemical constituents of perennial pepper plants cultivated under greenhouse conditions. For two consecutive seasons [2018/2019 and 2019/2020], pepper plants were sprayed with PS (0, 0.5, and 1 g/l) and drenched with vinasse (0, 1, 2, and 3 l/m3). To estimate the impact of PS and vinasse on the growth, yield, and biochemical constituents of pepper plants, fresh and dry biomass, potential fruit yield, and some biochemical constituents were evaluated. Results revealed that PS (0.5 g/l) coupled with vinasse (3 l/m3) generated the most remarkable enhancement, in terms of plant biomass, total leaf area, total yield, and fruit weight during both growing seasons. The implementation of vinasse at 3 l/m3 with PS at 0.5 and 1 g/l demonstrated the most pronounced augmentation in leaf contents (chlorophyll index, nitrogen and potassium), alongside improved fruit quality, including total soluble solid and ascorbic acid contents, of extended sweet pepper season. By implementing the optimal combination of PS and vinasse, growers can significantly enhance the biomass production while maintaining a balance in fruiting, thereby maximizing the prolonged fruit production of superior sweet pepper under greenhouse conditions.

Abstract This prospective cohort study included 80 healthy candidates for Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation who underwent biometric assessments with Scheimpflug imaging (the Pentacam-AXL) and swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT; the IOLMaster-700), both before and 3 months after surgery. The main outcome measures were mean keratometry, anterior chamber depth, axial length, and various intraocular lens (IOL) calculation formulas (Haigis, SRK/T, Hoffer Q, Holladay 1, Barrett Universal 2, and Olsen). The interchangeability of the devices was assessed by generating 95% limits of agreement (95% LoA) and associated Bland-Altman plots. The average age of the participants was 31.5 ± 5.4 years (22–43), with 58 (72.5%) being female. Among the cases analyzed, 11 (13.4%) had incorrect anterior lens surface segmentation using the IOLMaster-700, and 1 case (1.2%) had inappropriate segmentation using the Pentacam-AXL. Postoperative IOL power calculation resulted in readings that were, on average, 0.15 to 0.30 D higher compared to preoperative measurements. The 95% LoAs could differ by up to 0.85 D higher after surgery, indicating weak agreement between pre- and postoperative measurements. There was poor agreement between the IOLMaster-700 and Pentacam-AXL in IOL power calculation for eyes with post-ICL implantation, with a difference of more than 1 D in the 95% LoAs. In conclusion, Scheimpflug imaging was found to be less susceptible than the SS-OCT technique to segmentation errors of the anterior lens surface after ICL implantation. Neither device showed interchangeable results for pre- versus postoperative IOL power calculation. The determination of IOL power by the IOLMaster-700 versus Pentacam-AXL was not interchangeable in eyes with ICL implantation.

Abstract Trypanosoma evansi infection has started to become a wide spread phenomena around the camel-rearing areas of North Africa and the Middle East. The disease caused by trypanosomes is locally known as “Surra” and it can seriously impact not only the health of domestic animals but the local economy as well. After taking over the management of a farm containing approximately 700 camels, it was found that a large number were suffering from trypanosome infection and it was of the utmost importance to find the source of this infection. An extensive dive into the records and observations were initially made to identify the infected population. Under closer inspection it was found that the infection was limited mostly to female individuals that had undergone extended reproductive analysis or treatment. Blood samples were taken from each of the individuals for buffy coat test and blood smears. Among the total number of tested camels (n = 590), almost 40% were infected with trypanosomes. The number and percentage of infection correlate with the number of fertility and pregnancy treatments that the camels had undergone. The most severely infected group, underwent between 17 and 20 instances of treatment or tests, had an infection rate of almost 90%. The devastating effect of trypanosomiasis on camel pregnancy and birth were also verified with 61% of all abortions and 82% of all neonatal deaths coming from trypanosome infected individuals. These results clearly demonstrate how damaging iatrogenic infections of T. evansi can be and how simply they could have been prevented.

Abstract This study aimed to examine the interaction between diet quality indices (DQIs) and smoking on the incidence of hypertension (HTN), stroke, cardiovascular diseases, and all-cause mortality. We prospectively followed 5720 participants and collected dietary data via a validated food frequency questionnaire to calculate DQI-international (DQI-I) and DQI-revised (DQI-R). Considering an interaction analysis, we classified participants based on diet quality (median: higher/lower) and smoking status. Over 9 years of follow-up, higher diet quality scores were associated with a lower risk of stroke and mortality. While current smokers had a higher risk of stroke and mortality but had a lower risk of developing HTN. Compared to the current smokers with lower diet quality, nonsmokers with higher diet quality according to the DQI-I [HR 0.24; 95% CI (0.08, 0.66)], and DQI-R [HR 0.20; 95% CI (0.07, 0.57)] had a lower risk of stroke. Moreover, the lower risk of mortality was more evident in nonsmokers with higher DQI-I [HR 0.40; 95% CI (0.22–0.75)] and DQI-R scores [HR 0.34; 95% CI (0.18–0.63)] compared to nonsmokers with lower diet quality. While higher DQI-I and DQI-R scores were associated with a lower risk of stroke and mortality, this beneficial effect may be negated by smoking.

Abstract The effects of sulfate salts under low and high salinity conditions and pH of 3.5–11 on interfacial tension (IFT) reduction and IL adsorption using resinous (RSO) and asphaltenic (8 wt/wt%) synthetic oils are investigated. The measurements showed the increasing effect of pH on the IFT of RSO/DW from 23.5 to 27.3 mN/m (pH = 3.5 → 7) in the first place and a reducing effect (0.4 mN/m) if pH = 7 → 11. Using a high concentration of 50,000 ppm for MgSO4, and Na2SO4 revealed an extensive IFT reduction for a pH value of 11 with the value of 0.20 mN/m for Na2SO4. The measured IFT values showed the significant impact of IL (500 ppm) on the IFT (minimum value of 0.01 mN/m for RSO/50,000 Na2SO4 + 500 ppm 1-decyl-3-methyl imidazolium triflate ([C10mim][TfO])) for pH = 11. The IL adsorption measurements showed the role of in-situ surfactant production (saponification process) on the 1-decyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([C10mim][Cl]) and [C10mim][TfO] adsorption reduction from 3.67 to 2.33 and 4.21 to 3.34 mg IL/g rock, respectively. The performed core flooding experiments using the optimum chemical formulation showed the possibility of tertiary oil recovery with maximum oil recovery of 28.8% based on original oil in place in the presence of 500 ppm.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic performance of machine learning-based radiomics analysis to diagnose coronary artery disease status and risk from rest/stress Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). A total of 395 patients suspicious of coronary artery disease who underwent 2-day stress-rest protocol MPI SPECT were enrolled in this study. The left ventricle myocardium, excluding the cardiac cavity, was manually delineated on rest and stress images to define a volume of interest. Added to clinical features (age, sex, family history, diabetes status, smoking, and ejection fraction), a total of 118 radiomics features, were extracted from rest and stress MPI SPECT images to establish different feature sets, including Rest-, Stress-, Delta-, and Combined-radiomics (all together) feature sets. The data were randomly divided into 80% and 20% subsets for training and testing, respectively. The performance of classifiers built from combinations of three feature selections, and nine machine learning algorithms was evaluated for two different diagnostic tasks, including 1) normal/abnormal (no CAD vs. CAD) classification, and 2) low-risk/high-risk CAD classification. Different metrics, including the area under the ROC curve (AUC), accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SEN), and specificity (SPE), were reported for models’ evaluation. Overall, models built on the Stress feature set (compared to other feature sets), and models to diagnose the second task (compared to task 1 models) revealed better performance. The Stress-mRMR-KNN (feature set-feature selection-classifier) reached the highest performance for task 1 with AUC, ACC, SEN, and SPE equal to 0.61, 0.63, 0.64, and 0.6, respectively. The Stress-Boruta-GB model achieved the highest performance for task 2 with AUC, ACC, SEN, and SPE of 0.79, 0.76, 0.75, and 0.76, respectively. Diabetes status from the clinical feature family, and dependence count non-uniformity normalized, from the NGLDM family, which is representative of non-uniformity in the region of interest were the most frequently selected features from stress feature set for CAD risk classification. This study revealed promising results for CAD risk classification using machine learning models built on MPI SPECT radiomics. The proposed models are helpful to alleviate the labor-intensive MPI SPECT interpretation process regarding CAD status and can potentially expedite the diagnostic process.

Abstract Earth’s mineral deposits show a non-uniform spatial distribution from the craton-scale, to the scale of individual mineral districts. Although this pattern of differential metal endowment is underpinned by lithospheric-scale processes the geological features that cause clustering of deposits remains enigmatic. The integration of geological and geophysical (seismic, gravity, and magnetotelluric) features has produced the first whole-of-crust image through an iconic Neoarchean volcanic complex and mineral district in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt, Superior Province, Canada. Observations indicate an asymmetry in surface geology, structure, and crustal architecture that defines deep transcrustal magmatic-hydrothermal upflow zones and the limits of the Noranda District ore system. Here, extreme volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) endowment is confined to a smaller area adjacent to an ancestral transcrustal structure interpreted to have localized and optimized magmatic and ore forming processes. Although lithospheric-scale evolutionary processes might act as the fundamental control on metal endowment, the new crustal reconstruction explains the clustering of deposits on both belt and district scales. The results highlight a strong magmatic control on metal and in particular Au endowment in VMS systems. Overprinting by clusters of ca. 30 Ma younger orogenic Au deposits suggest the ore systems accessed an upper lithospheric mantle enriched in Au and metals.

Abstract Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for RNA and DNA delivery have attracted considerable attention for their ability to treat a broad range of diseases and to vectorize mRNA for COVID vaccines. LNPs are produced by mixing biomolecules and lipids, which self-assemble to form the desired structure. In this domain, microfluidics shows clear advantages: high mixing quality, low-stress conditions, and fast preparation. Studies of LNPs produced in micromixers have revealed, in certain ranges of flow rates, a degradation in performance in terms of size, monodispersity and encapsulation efficiency. In this study, we focus on the ring micromixer, which is well adapted to high throughput. We reveal three regimes, side-by-side, transitional and highly mixed, that control the mixing performance of the device. Furthermore, using cryo-TEM and biochemical analysis, we show that the mixing performances are strongly correlated to the characteristics of the LNPs we produce. We emphasize the importance of the flow-rate ratio and propose a physical criterion based on the onset of temporal instabilities for producing LNPs with optimal characteristics in terms of geometry, monodispersity and encapsulation yield. These criteria are generally applicable.

Abstract High frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (HF-rTMS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (L-DLPFC) is a widely applied treatment protocol for chronic smoking and major depressive disorder. However, no previous study has measured the effects of rTMS on both nicotine consumption and anxiety/depression in the same volunteers despite the relationship between them. The aim of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of 10 daily sessions of HF-rTMS over the L-DLPFC in chronic cigarette smokers’ addiction and investigate the possible beneficial effects of this treatment procedure on symptoms of depression and anxiety in the same subjects. The study included 40 treatment-seeking nicotine-dependent cigarette smokers. Onset/duration of smoking, number of cigarettes/day, Fagerstrom Test of Nicotine Dependence (FTND), Tobacco Craving Questionnaire-Short Form (TCQ-SF), Hamilton depression and anxiety scales (HAM-D and HAM-A) were recorded. Participants were randomly assigned to the active or the sham treatment group. Those in the active group received 10 trains of 20 Hz stimulation, at 80% of the resting motor threshold (rMT) for 10 consecutive working days over L-DLPFC. Participants were reassessed immediately after treatment, and then 3 months later using all rating scales. There were no differences between active and sham groups at baseline. The cigarette consumption/day, and scores on FTND, and TCQ decreased significantly in both groups (p = 0.0001 for each) immediately after treatment. However, improvement persisted to 3 months in the active group but not in the sham group. Moreover, there was a significant reduction in HAM-D and HAM-A scores immediately after treatment in the active but not the sham group. Subjects with a longer history of smoking had a lower percent improvement in FTND (p = 0.005). Our findings revealed that HF-rTMS over L-DLPCF for 10 days reduced cigarette consumption, craving, dependence, and improved associated symptoms of anxiety and depression. Abstract Acoustic phased arrays are capable of steering and focusing a beam of sound via selective coordination of the spatial distribution of phase angles between multiple sound emitters. Constrained by the principle of reciprocity, conventional phased arrays exhibit identical transmission and reception patterns which limit the scope of their operation. This work presents a controllable space–time acoustic phased array which breaks time-reversal symmetry, and enables phononic transition in both momentum and energy spaces. By leveraging a dynamic phase modulation, the proposed linear phased array is no longer bound by the acoustic reciprocity, and supports asymmetric transmission and reception patterns that can be tuned independently at multiple channels. A foundational framework is developed to characterize and interpret the emergent nonreciprocal phenomena and is later validated against benchmark numerical experiments. The new phased array selectively alters the directional and frequency content of the incident signal and imparts a frequency conversion between different wave fields, which is further analyzed as a function of the imposed modulation. The space–time acoustic phased array enables unprecedented control over sound waves in a variety of applications ranging from ultrasonic imaging to non-destructive testing and underwater SONAR telecommunication.

Abstract The biofuels are receiving considerable attention as a substitute for petro diesel. For microalgae, the cell density or biomass and lipid contents are key components for biodiesel production. This study was conducted to develop favorable culture conditions for Dunaliella salina to maximize its biomass and lipid accumulation. The effect of salinity (0.5 to 2.5 M NaCl) on the cell population, biochemical composition, and lipid output of Dunaliella salina was examined under a controlled environment for 21 days. Maximum growth (6.57 × 107 to 7.17 × 107cells mL−1) potentials were observed at 1.5 to 2 M NaCl. The photosynthetic pigments and carbohydrates also showed trends similar to growth. The maximum carotenoid level (5.16 mg L−1) was recorded at 2 M NaCl. Almost all physicochemical parameters increased with increases in salinity, biomass (1231.66 ± 1.26 mg L−1) and lipid content (248.33 mg L−1), as recorded at 2 M NaCl. Based on fluorescence intensity, the highest values (11.84 × 107cells/ml) of neutral lipids and total lipids (22.28%) were recorded at optimum salinity levels. The present study suggests that a high biomass and lipid accumulation of Dunaliella salina SA 134 could be obtained at the 2 M NaCl level.

Limited data exist on viral hepatitis among migrant populations. This study investigated the prevalence of current hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and lifetime hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among Qatar's migrant craft and manual workers (CMWs), constituting 60% of the country's population. Sera collected during a nationwide COVID-19 population-based cross-sectional survey on CMWs between July 26 and September 9, 2020, underwent testing for HBsAg and HCV antibodies. Reactive samples underwent confirmatory testing, and logistic regression analyses were employed to explore associations with HBV and HCV infections. Among 2528 specimens tested for HBV infection, 15 were reactive, with 8 subsequently confirmed positive. Three samples lacked sufficient sera for confirmatory testing but were included in the analysis through multiple imputations. Prevalence of current HBV infection was 0.4% (95% CI 0.2-0.7%). Educational attainment and occupation were significantly associated with current HBV infection. For HCV infection, out of 2607 specimens tested, 46 were reactive, and 23 were subsequently confirmed positive. Prevalence of lifetime HCV infection was 0.8% (95% CI 0.5-1.2%). Egyptians exhibited the highest prevalence at 6.5% (95% CI 3.1-13.1%), followed by Pakistanis at 3.1% (95% CI 1.1-8.0%). Nationality, geographic location, and occupation were significantly associated with lifetime HCV infection. HBV infection is relatively low among CMWs, while HCV infection falls within the intermediate range, both compared to global and regional levels., (© 2024. The Author(s).)
