Abstract Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) formation increases with metabolic disorders, leading to higher serum AGE levels in patients with progressive vascular complications. Measuring AGE levels in biological samples requires multiple pre-analytical processing steps, rendering analysis of multiple samples challenging. This study evaluated the progression of diabetic complications by analyzing AGE levels using a pre-analytical processing strategy based on a fully automated solid phase-extraction system. Serum samples from patients with diabetes, with or without macrovascular complications (Mac or non-Mac) or microvascular complications (Mic or non-Mic), were processed with the established methods. Free and total AGE levels in sera were measured using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). In patients with diabetes, both free and total AGE levels were elevated in those with complications compared to those without complications. In Mac and Mic groups, free and total AGE levels and z-scores (the sum of normalized AGE levels) also increased. AGE z-scores were markedly higher than those of single AGE levels in distinguishing each complication. Our study demonstrated that the free AGE z-score, measured using a new analytical method without hydrolysis, correlated with the presence of vascular complications and may serve as a marker of disease complications.

Abstract Subglacial discharge from marine-terminating glaciers in Greenland injects large volumes of freshwater and suspended sediment into adjacent fjord environments. Although the discharge itself is nutrient poor, the formation of meltwater plumes can enhance marine biological production by stimulating upwelling of nutrient-rich fjord water. Despite the importance of meltwater discharge to marine ecosystems, little is known of the quantitative impact of discharge processes on phytoplankton growth, including the effects of local plumes, fjord-wide stirring and mixing, and suspended sediments on net primary production (NPP). Here, we report simulations of Bowdoin Fjord in northwestern Greenland using coupled non-hydrostatic ocean circulation and lower-trophic level ecosystem models, developed using field data. Our findings demonstrate that subglacial discharge plays a crucial role in NPP by stirring and mixing the entire fjord water system, which has a greater effect on NPP than local plume upwelling. Sensitivity tests suggest a 20% increase in NPP under conditions of enhanced discharge anticipated in the future. However, if glacier discharge and retreat exceed critical levels, NPP is predicted to decline by 88% relative to present values. This pattern reflects the negative impact of increased sediment flux on photosynthesis and weakened fjord stirring and mixing resulting from shallower outlet depths.

Abstract Although bilateral simultaneous total knee arthroplasty (BSTKA) is an effective treatment for bilateral knee osteoarthritis, safety concerns and lack of precise patient selection criteria persist. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the complication rate and the role of frailty in patient selection for BSTKA. We analyzed data from 434 patients who underwent BSTKA between February 2012 and January 2021, examining demographic factors and preoperative blood test results. Complications occurred in 77 patients (18%), with anemia requiring transfusion being the most common (26 patients, 5.9%). Abstract High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) poses a significant threat to both domestic and wild birds globally. The avian influenza virus, known for environmental contamination and subsequent oral infection in birds, necessitates careful consideration of alternative introduction routes during HPAI outbreaks. This study focuses on blowflies (genus Calliphora), in particular Calliphora nigribarbis, attracted to decaying animals and feces, which migrate to lowland areas of Japan from northern or mountainous regions in early winter, coinciding with HPAI season. Our investigation aims to delineate the role of blowflies as HPAI vectors by conducting a virus prevalence survey in a wild bird HPAI-enzootic area. In December 2022, 648 Calliphora nigribarbis were collected. Influenza virus RT-PCR testing identified 14 virus-positive samples (2.2% prevalence), with the highest occurrence observed near the crane colony (14.9%). Subtyping revealed the presence of H5N1 and HxN1 in some samples. Subsequent collections in December 2023 identified one HPAI virus-positive specimen from 608 collected flies in total, underscoring the potential involvement of blowflies in HPAI transmission. Our observations suggest C. nigribarbis may acquire the HPAI virus from deceased wild birds directly or from fecal materials from infected birds, highlighting the need to add blowflies as a target of HPAI vector control.

Abstract An indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-glucose hydrolase, THOUSAND-GRAIN WEIGHT 6 (TGW6), negatively regulates the grain weight in rice. TGW6 has been used as a target for breeding increased rice yield. Moreover, the activity of TGW6 has been thought to involve auxin homeostasis, yet the details of this putative TGW6 activity remain unclear. Here, we show the three-dimensional structure and substrate preference of TGW6 using X-ray crystallography, thermal shift assays and fluorine nuclear magnetic resonance (19F NMR). The crystal structure of TGW6 was determined at 2.6 Å resolution and exhibited a six-bladed β-propeller structure. Thermal shift assays revealed that TGW6 preferably interacted with indole compounds among the tested substrates, enzyme products and their analogs. Further analysis using 19F NMR with 1,134 fluorinated fragments emphasized the importance of indole fragments in recognition by TGW6. Finally, docking simulation analyses of the substrate and related fragments in the presence of TGW6 supported the interaction specificity for indole compounds. Herein, we describe the structure and substrate preference of TGW6 for interacting with indole fragments during substrate recognition. Uncovering the molecular details of TGW6 activity will stimulate the use of this enzyme for increasing crop yields and contributes to functional studies of IAA glycoconjugate hydrolases in auxin homeostasis.

Abstract Detailed investigation of extremely severe pathological conditions in ancient human skeletons is important as it could shed light on the breadth of potential interactions between humans and disease etiologies in the past. Here, we applied palaeoproteomics to investigate an ancient human skeletal individual with severe oral pathology, focusing our research on bacterial pathogenic factors and host defense response. This female skeleton, from the Okhotsk period (i.e., fifth to thirteenth century) of Northern Japan, poses relevant amounts of abnormal dental calculus deposition and exhibits oral dysfunction due to severe periodontal disease. A shotgun mass-spectrometry analysis identified 81 human proteins and 15 bacterial proteins from the calculus of the subject. We identified two pathogenic or bioinvasive proteins originating from two of the three “red complex” bacteria, the core species associated with severe periodontal disease in modern humans, as well as two additional bioinvasive proteins of periodontal-associated bacteria. Moreover, we discovered defense response system-associated human proteins, although their proportion was mostly similar to those reported in ancient and modern human individuals with lower calculus deposition. These results suggest that the bacterial etiology was similar and the host defense response was not necessarily more intense in ancient individuals with significant amounts of abnormal dental calculus deposition.

Abstract Menkes disease is an X-linked disorder of copper metabolism caused by mutations in the ATP7A gene, and female carriers are usually asymptomatic. We describe a 7-month-old female patient with severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, and low levels of serum copper and ceruloplasmin. While heterozygous deletion of exons 16 and 17 of the ATP7A gene was detected in the proband, her mother, and her grandmother, only the proband suffered from Menkes disease clinically. Intriguingly, X chromosome inactivation (XCI) analysis demonstrated that the grandmother and the mother showed skewing of XCI toward the allele with the ATP7A deletion and that the proband had extremely skewed XCI toward the normal allele, resulting in exclusive expression of the pathogenic ATP7A mRNA transcripts. Expression bias analysis and recombination mapping of the X chromosome by the combination of whole genome and RNA sequencing demonstrated that meiotic recombination occurred at Xp21-p22 and Xq26-q28. Assuming that a genetic factor on the X chromosome enhanced or suppressed XCI of its allele, the factor must be on either of the two distal regions derived from her grandfather. Although we were unable to fully uncover the molecular mechanism, we concluded that unfavorable switching of skewed XCI caused Menkes disease in the proband.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the lesion and endoscopist factors associated with unintentional endoscopic piecemeal mucosal resection (uniEPMR) of colorectal lesions ≥ 10 mm. uniEPMR was defined from the medical record as anything other than a preoperatively planned EPMR. Factors leading to uniEPMR were identified by retrospective univariate and multivariate analyses of lesions ≥ 10 mm (adenoma including sessile serrated lesion and carcinoma) that were treated with endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) at three hospitals. Additionally, a questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the number of cases treated by each endoscopist. A learning curve (LC) was created for each lesion size based on the number of experienced cases and the percentage of uniEPMR. Of 2557 lesions, 327 lesions underwent uniEPMR. Abstract Movement is an important behavior observed in a wide range of taxa. Previous studies have examined genes controlling movement using wing polymorphic insects and genes controlling wing size. However, few studies have investigated genes controlling movement activity rather than morphological traits. In the present study, we conducted RNA sequencing using populations with higher (WL) and lower (WS) mobility established by artificial selection in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum and compared gene expression levels between selected populations with two replicate lines. As a result, we found significant differences between the selected populations in 677 genes expressed in one replicate line and 1198 genes expressed in another replicate line, of which 311 genes were common to the two replicate lines. Furthermore, quantitative PCR focusing on 6 of these genes revealed that neuropeptide F receptor gene (NpF) was significantly more highly expressed in the WL population than in the WS population, which was common to the two replicate lines. We discuss differences in genes controlling movement between walking activity and wing polymorphism.

Abstract Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a high-dose-intensive radiation therapy that has gained popularity due to advancements in accelerator neutron sources. To determine the dose for BNCT, it is necessary to know the difficult-to-determine boron concentration and neutron fluence. To estimate this dose, we propose a method of measuring the prompt γ-rays (PGs) from the boron neutron capture reaction (BNCR) using a Compton camera. We performed a fundamental experiment to verify basic imaging performance and the ability to discern the PGs from 511 keV annihilation γ-rays. A Si/CdTe Compton camera was used to image the BNCR and showed an energy peak of 478 keV PGs, separate from the annihilation γ-ray peak. The Compton camera could visualize the boron target with low neutron intensity and high boron concentration. This study experimentally confirms the ability of Si/CdTe Compton cameras to image BNCRs.

Abstract The mechanism of metachronous recurrence (MR) after performing endoscopic treatment for early gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) and eradicating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is unknown. To elucidate the mechanism and risk factors of MR, we analyzed gene expression at multiple locations of the gastric mucosa. We selected each five patients with MR and without MR (control), after early GAC treatment and eradication of H. pylori. Mucosal tissue was collected from four sites in the stomach of each patient as biopsy specimens for mRNA sequencing, gene set enrichment analysis, and microRNA (miRNA) sequencing. We also performed correlation analysis and target prediction on pathways. As a result, endoscopically, the MR group had more intestinal metaplasia and enlarged folds. A total of 384 mRNAs presented changes in expression and 31 gene sets were enriched in the MR group. Immune-related pathways were enriched in the entire stomach, and the IFN-α response had the highest enrichment score. Additionally, 32 miRNAs revealed changes in their expression. Correlation analysis and target prediction with genes in the gene set of IFN-α response revealed that 10 miRNA–mRNA pairs presented a significant correlation. Immune-related pathways with miRNAs in the gastric mucosa after H. pylori eradication may be a risk factor for MR.

Abstract There have been few reports on the diagnostic performance of soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) for lymphoma. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a university hospital; all patients who were admitted to the Division of General Internal Medicine and underwent serum sIL-2R testing were included. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of fever (≥ 38.0 °C). Among 602 patients, 421 had fever and 76 were diagnosed with lymphoma (48 of the 76 were in the febrile group). In all patients, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of sIL-2R for the diagnosis of lymphoma was 0.81 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.75–0.87]. The AUROC was significantly higher in the febrile group (0.88; 95% CI, 0.81–0.94) than in the afebrile group (0.75; 95% CI, 0.65–0.85). In the febrile group, the sensitivity and specificity were 81.2% and 82.3%, respectively, with an optimal cutoff value of 3,250 U/mL. In the afebrile group, they were 89.3% and 54.9%, respectively, with a cutoff value of 868 U/mL. Serum sIL-2R showed high performance as an adjunctive diagnostic marker for lymphoma, particularly among febrile patients. Different cutoff values should be used for patients with and without fever to maximize diagnostic performance.

Abstract Intracellular ice formation during cryopreservation is lethal to the cell, including during warming. Here, we examined the effect of sample volume and warming rate on the cryopreservation success of 1-cell rat embryos based on successful development into blastocysts in vitro and to term in vivo following embryo transfer. Embryos were equilibrated in 5% propylene glycol solution for 10 min, held for 40 s at 0 °C in cryopreservation solution (5%PG + PEPeS), and cooled by immersion in liquid nitrogen. When 1-cell embryos were cryopreserved in a volume of 30–100 μL at a cooling rate of 5830–7160 °C/min and warmed at 35,480–49,400 °C/min by adding 1 mL of 0.3 M sucrose solution at 50 °C, 17.3–28.8% developed into blastocysts, compared with 57.0% of untreated embryos. However, when 1-cell embryos were cryopreserved in a smaller volume of 15 μl at 7950 °C/min and warmed at 68,850 °C/min, 58.8 ± 10.6% developed into blastocysts and 50.0 ± 7.4% developed to term, comparable to that of non-treated embryos (57.0 ± 5.4% and 51.4 ± 3.1%, respectively). Cryopreserved embryos at other developmental stages also showed high in vitro culture potential similar to that of the control. Using a conventional cryotube and a small-volume vitrification procedure with rapid warming, we achieved high levels of subsequent rat embryonic development at all developmental stages.

Abstract A typical ground investigation for characterizing geotechnical properties of soil requires sampling soils to test in a laboratory. Laboratory X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been used to non-destructively observe soils and characterize their properties using image processing, numerical analysis, or three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques based on scanned images; however, if it becomes possible to scan the soils in the ground, it may enable the characterization without sampling them. In this study, an in-situ X-ray CT scanning system comprising a drilling machine with an integrated CT scanner was developed. A model test was conducted on gravel soil to verify if the equipment can drill and scan the soil underground. Moreover, image processing was performed on acquired 3D CT images to verify the image quality; the particle morphology (particle size and shape characteristics) was compared with the results obtained for projected particles captured in a two-dimensional (2D) manner by a digital camera. The equipment successfully drilled to a target depth of 800 mm, and the soil was scanned at depths of 700, 750, and 800 mm. Image processing results showed a reasonable agreement between the 3D and 2D particle morphology images, and confirmed the feasibility of the in-situ X-ray CT scanning system.

Abstract Many molecular targeted agents, including biologics, have emerged for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), but their high prices have prevented their widespread use. This study aimed to reveal the changes in patient characteristics and the therapeutic strategies of IBD before and after the implementation of biologics in Japan, where the unique health insurance system allows patients with IBD and physicians to select drugs with minimum patient expenses. The analysis was performed using a prospective cohort, including IBD expert and nonexpert hospitals in Japan. In this study, patients were classified into two groups according to the year of diagnosis based on infliximab implementation as the prebiologic and biologic era groups. The characteristics of therapeutic strategies in both groups were evaluated using association analysis. This study analyzed 542 ulcerative colitis (UC) and 186 Crohn’s disease (CD). Abstract An in vitro spermatogenesis method using mouse testicular tissue to produce fertile sperm was established more than a decade ago. Although this culture method has generally not been effective in other animal species, we recently succeeded in improving the culture condition to induce spermatogenesis of rats up to the round spermatid stage. In the present study, we introduced acrosin-EGFP transgenic rats in order to clearly monitor the production of haploid cells during spermatogenesis in vitro. In addition, a metabolomic analysis of the culture media during cultivation revealed the metabolic dynamics of the testis tissue. By modifying the culture media based on these results, we were able to induce rat spermatogenesis repeatedly up to haploid cell production, including the formation of elongating spermatids, which was confirmed histologically and immunohistochemically. Finally, we performed a microinsemination experiment with in vitro produced spermatids, which resulted in the production of healthy and fertile offspring. This is the first demonstration of the in vitro production of functional haploid cells that yielded offspring in animals other than mice. These results are expected to provide a basis for the development of an in vitro spermatogenesis system applicable to many other mammals.

Abstract Veterinary medicine has made tremendous progress for domestic dogs, which are irreplaceable family members enriching human life. Nevertheless, no adequate supply system exists for their blood products. This study examined the synthesis, structure, safety, and efficacy of poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)-conjugated porcine serum albumin (POx-PSA) as an artificial plasma expander for dogs. The aqueous POx-PSA solution showed moderately high colloid osmotic pressure and good blood cell compatibility. Actually, lyophilized powder stored for 1 year can regenerate into a homogeneous solution. The circulation half-life of POx-PSA in rats was 2.1-fold longer than that of naked PSA. Rats produced neither anti-PSA IgG antibody nor anti-POx IgG antibody, which suggests excellent immunological stealth properties of POx-PSA. Complete resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock in rats was achieved soon after injection of POx-PSA solution. Serum biochemistry tests and histopathological observations indicated no abnormality in the related organs. When POx-PSA was administered to dogs intravenously, (i) no serum biochemical or hematological alteration was observed, also (ii) no overt deterioration of animal health was observed. These results indicate that POx-PSA has potential as an artificial plasma expander for dogs.

Abstract The physical properties of cytoskeletal microtubules have a multifaceted effect on the expression of their cellular functions. A superfamily of microtubule-associated proteins, MAP2, MAP4, and tau, promote the polymerization of microtubules, stabilize the formed microtubules, and affect the physical properties of microtubules. Here, we show differences in the effects of these three MAPs on the physical properties of microtubules. When microtubule-binding domain fragments of MAP2, tau, and three MAP4 isoforms were added to microtubules in vitro and observed by fluorescence microscopy, tau-bound microtubules showed a straighter morphology than the microtubules bound by MAP2 and the three MAP4 isoforms. Flexural rigidity was evaluated by the shape of the teardrop pattern formed when microtubules were placed in a hydrodynamic flow, revealing that tau-bound microtubules were the least flexible. When full-length MAPs fused with EGFP were expressed in human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells, the microtubules in apical regions of protrusions expressing tau were straighter than in cells expressing MAP2 and MAP4. On the other hand, the protrusions of tau-expressing cells had the fewest branches. These results suggest that the properties of microtubules, which are regulated by MAPs, contribute to the morphogenesis of neurites.

Abstract Caesarean section (CS) birth is widely reported to be a risk factor for childhood obesity. Although susceptibility to childhood obesity is influenced by race and ethnicity, it is unclear whether this risk of childhood obesity with CS birth also applies in the Japanese population. We investigated the impact of CS birth on obesity at 3 years of age in Japanese children. We obtained data from 60,769 mother–toddler pairs in the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, a large-scale birth cohort study. Obesity was determined by body mass index measured at 3 years of age. Analysis revealed that 11,241 toddlers (18.5%) had a CS birth and that 4912 toddlers (8.1%) were obese. The adjusted risk ratio for obesity at 3 years of age when born by CS compared with vaginal delivery, estimated using inverse probability of treatment weighting, was 1.16 (95% confidence interval 1.08–1.25). These results suggest that CS birth modestly increases the risk of obesity at 3 years of age in Japanese children.

Abstract A multicenter randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the effectiveness of incisional and nonincisional surgical techniques for treating lower lid epiblepharon in children. The study included 89 eyes from 50 children aged 3–15 years (mean, 7.5 ± 2.4 years) with moderate lower lid epiblepharon. Patients were randomly assigned to either incisional (modified Hotz procedure with lid margin splitting; 45 eyes of 25 patients) or nonincisional (44 eyes of 25 patients) surgery groups. Treatment outcomes and changes in astigmatism were evaluated 6 months after surgery. Incisional surgery provided a significantly higher percentage (77.8%) of well-corrected treatment results (P = 0.026; odds ratio, 2.88; 95% confidence interval, 1.07–8.22) than nonincisional surgery (55.4%). The mean change in astigmatism 6 months after surgery was − 0.24 ± 0.42 and − 0.01 ± 0.47 D in the incisional and nonincisional surgery groups, respectively. The improvement in astigmatism was significantly higher in the incisional surgery group than in the nonincisional surgery group (P = 0.008). The incisional surgical treatment for moderate epiblepharon in children resulted in a higher number of well-corrected patients, indicating an absence of both ciliary touch and superficial keratitis as well as statistically significant improvements in astigmatism correction.

We unveiled the penile penetration mechanics of two earwig species, Echinosoma horridum, whose intromittent organ, termed virga, is extraordinarily long, and E. denticulatum, whose virga is conversely short. We characterised configuration, geometry, material and bending stiffness for both virga and spermatheca. The short virga of E. denticulatum has a material gradient with the stiffer base, whereas the long virga of E. horridum and the spermathecae of both species are homogeneously sclerotised. The long virga of E. horridum has a lower bending stiffness than the spermatheca. The virga of E. denticulatum is overall less flexible than the spermatheca. We compared our results to a previous study on the penetration mechanics of elongated beetle genitalia. Based on the comparison, we hypothesised that the lower stiffness of the male intromittent organ comparing to the corresponding female structure is a universal prerequisite for the penetration mechanics of the elongated intromittent organ in insects.

Abstract Novel therapeutic drugs have dramatically improved the overall survival of patients with multiple myeloma. We sought to identify the characteristics of patients likely to exhibit a durable response to one such drug, elotuzumab, by analyzing a real-world database in Japan. We analyzed 179 patients who underwent 201 elotuzumab treatments. The median time to next treatment (TTNT) with the 95% confidence interval was 6.29 months (5.18–9.20) in this cohort. Univariate analysis showed that patients with any of the following had longer TTNT: no high risk cytogenic abnormalities, more white blood cells, more lymphocytes, non-deviated κ/λ ratio, lower β2 microglobulin levels (B2MG), fewer prior drug regimens, no prior daratumumab use and better response after elotuzumab treatment. Abstract Uveitic glaucoma (UG) is sometimes intractable, including intricate interaction between intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation associated with inflammation and side effects of steroids. Based on the Tube Versus Trabeculectomy study in refractory glaucoma results in 2012, tube shunt surgeries have been performed for UG, but few reports have focused on UG. We retrospectively examined the surgical efficacy, complications, and risk factors in 62 eyes with UG that underwent Baerveldt glaucoma drainage device (BGD) implantation at Kumamoto University. The IOPs significantly dropped, and the mean number of glaucoma medications was reduced by more than two. Kaplan‒Meier survival curves were presented under 2 conditions: an IOP reduction of 20% and 6 ≤ IOP ≤ 18 mmHg (criterion A) or 6 ≤ IOP ≤ 15 mmHg (criterion B). In criterion A, the median survival times (MST) were 124 days (complete) and 997 days (qualified). In criterion B, the MST was 129 days (complete) and 867 days (qualified). The Cox hazard proportional model found that the hazard ratio was 0.170 for a history of cataract surgery (95% CI 0.0303–0.950) and 8.669 for systemic immunosuppressive therapy (95% CI 1.810–41.51). BGD implantation is effective for treating UG, but the presence of systemic treatment and the lens status should be considered.

Abstract SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread worldwide. Patients with COVID-19 show distinct clinical symptoms. Although many studies have reported various causes for the diversity of symptoms, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from COVID-19 patients were collected longitudinally, and single-cell transcriptome and T cell receptor repertoire analysis was performed. Comparison of molecular features and patients’ clinical information revealed that the proportions of cells present, and gene expression profiles differed significantly between mild and severe cases; although even among severe cases, substantial differences were observed among the patients. In one severely-infected elderly patient, an effective antibody response seemed to have failed, which may have caused prolonged viral clearance. Naïve T cell depletion, low T cell receptor repertoire diversity, and aberrant hyperactivation of most immune cell subsets were observed during the acute phase in this patient. Through this study, we provided a better understanding of the diversity of immune landscapes and responses. The information obtained from this study can help medical professionals develop personalized optimal clinical treatment strategies for COVID-19.

Abstract Nasal pressure signal is commonly used to evaluate obstructive sleep apnea. This study aimed to assess its safety for respiratory monitoring during sedation. A total of 45 adult patients undergoing sedation with propofol and fentanyl for invasive endoscopic procedures were enrolled. While both nasal pressure and capnograph signals were continuously recorded, only the nasal pressure signal was displayed. The primary outcome was the incidence of oxygen desaturation below 90%. The secondary outcomes were the ability to predict the desaturation and incidence of harmful events and false alarms, defined as an apnea waveform lasting more than 3 min without desaturation. Of the 45 participants, 43 completed the study. At least one desaturation event occurred in 12 patients (27.9%; 95% confidence interval 15.3–43.7%). In these 12 patients, more than half of the desaturation events were predictable in 9 patients by capnography and 11 patients by nasal pressure monitoring (p = 0.59). In the 43 patients, false alarms were detected in 7 patients with capnography and 11 patients with nasal pressure monitoring (p = 0.427). Harmful events unrelated to nasal pressure monitoring occurred in 2 patients. Nasal pressure monitoring is safe and possibly useful for respiratory monitoring despite false alarms during sedation.
