Abstract Plants belonging to the genus Cotoneaster can be valuable sources of phytochemicals with potential therapeutic properties. The natural habitats of most of these species are situated in Asia, Africa and southern Europe. Introducing them into other climatic conditions could expose them to abiotic and biotic stresses, affecting their bioactive properties. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the performance of four non-native Cotoneaster species (C. roseus, C. hissaricus, C. hsingshangensis, C. nebrodensis) grown in eastern Poland in terms of leaf morphology, anatomy, and efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus in relation to lipid peroxidation level, being an indicator of oxidative stress. Photosynthetic pigments concentration and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters were used to evaluate the photosynthetic capacity. The morphological and anatomical analysis of leaves did not show any anomalies or stress symptoms. Cotoneaster roseus was characterized by the highest chlorophyll concentration, viability index (Rfd) and a moderate lipid peroxidation level. On the other hand, the lowest values of photochemical quenching (qP), maximum fluorescence (Fm), Rfd, and quantum yield of the photosystem II (QY) observed for C. nebrodensis might indicate an inferior efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus in this species; however, it demonstrated the lowest lipid peroxidation level. Nevertheless, the content and proportion of the photosynthetic pigments as well as overall chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters and lipid peroxidation levels indicate a good physiological condition of all examined plants. The observed differences between the species may be rather species specific and genetically established and not indicate their sensitivity to non-native growth conditions. This is the first report about the physiological parameters of the four Cotoneaster species, proving they are well adapted to growth in the climatic conditions of central Europe providing thus a raw material with potential for pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract Pregnancy affects a woman’s physiological and psychological state. One of the most important aspects that requires attention is the quality of life of pregnant women. The quality of life of women during this period is influenced by a number of factors, such as back and pelvic pain, physiotherapy and physical activity, and also sexual satisfaction. Eighty-five women aged 21–40 years (30.80 ± 5.05) in pregnancy trimesters participated in the study: 17 women were in the first trimester, 32 women were in the second, and 36 women in the third trimester. The World Health Organisation Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the Sexual Satisfaction Scale for Women SSS-W-R15 were used to answer the research hypotheses. Respondents also provided information on questions regarding physiotherapy treatments and physical activity. Quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) and disability due to back pain (ODI) showed a statistical association and relationship (p-value = 0.045, rho = − 0.22). Quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) has an association with sexual satisfaction in pregnant women (SSS-W-R15) (p-value = 0.003, rho = 0.32). The trimester of pregnancy has an effect on ODI (p-value = 0.027). A significant effect occurred in a detailed comparison between the first and third trimesters of pregnancy (p-value = 0.026). The trimester also has an impact on quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) (p-value = 0.002). In a detailed analysis, a significant effect occurred between the first and third trimesters of pregnancy (p-value = 0.001). Moreover, the trimester of pregnancy has an impact on sexual satisfaction (SSS-W-R15) (p-value = 0.027). After detailed statistical analysis, a significant effect occurred between trimesters one and three of pregnancy (p-value = 0.046). On the other hand, the number of days of physical activity performed by pregnant women per month and the type of physical activity had no effect on the ODI (p-value = 0.071). The type of physical activity performed by pregnant women also has no effect on ODI (p-value = 0.023). The number of physiotherapy treatments used has no effect on the ODI (p-value = 0.156). Type of physiotherapy treatment has no effect on ODI (p-value = 0.620). Normal pregnancy quality of life (WHOQOL) is related to ODI and sexual satisfaction (SSS-W-R15), while the trimester of pregnancy also has an impact on quality of life, disability due to back pain and sexual satisfaction.

Abstract To identify metal adapted bacteria equipped with traits positively influencing the growth of two hyperaccumulator plant species Arabidopsis arenosa and Arabidopsis halleri, we isolated bacteria inhabiting rhizosphere and vegetative tissues (roots, basal and stem leaves) of plants growing on two old Zn–Pb–Cd waste heaps in Bolesław and Bukowno (S. Poland), and characterized their potential plant growth promoting (PGP) traits as well as determined metal concentrations in rhizosphere and plant tissues. To determine taxonomic position of 144 bacterial isolates, 16S rDNA Sanger sequencing was used. A metabolic characterization of isolated strains was performed in vitro using PGP tests. A. arenosa and A. halleri accumulate high amounts of Zn in their tissues, especially in stem leaves. Among in total 22 identified bacterial taxa, the highest level of the taxonomical diversity (H’ = 2.01) was revealed in A. halleri basal leaf endophytes originating from Bukowno waste heap area. The 96, 98, 99, and 98% of investigated strains showed tolerant to Cd, Zn, Pb and Cu, respectively. Generally, higher percentages of bacteria could synthesize auxins, siderophores, and acetoin as well as could solubilize phosphate. Nine of waste heap origin bacterial strains were tolerant to toxic metals, showed in vitro PGP traits and are potential candidates for bioremediation.

Abstract Heart rate variability (HRV) is a simple tool to monitor cardiovascular stress. The proper function of the cardiovascular system is a problem among firefighters. Physical activity has health benefits correlated with psychological stress. Physically active people should be more resilient to psychological stress, but this has not always been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to determine whether cranial techniques would have an effect on HRV parameters. Osteopathy in the cranium reduces stress and improves cardiovascular function. Fifty-seven firefighter cadets aged 18–24 years (21.63 ± 1.41) participated in the study. All subjects had their heart rate variability measured and were randomly assigned either to the cranial techniques (CS) group, with therapy performed once a week for 5 weeks), or to the control group (CO). After 5 weeks, heart rate variability was measured again in both groups. In the Friedman test, in the CS group there was a statistically significant effect of cranial techniques on Heart Rate (HR) and Low Frequency (LF), but not on High Frequency (HF); in the CO group, a statistically significant difference was observed for HR, HF and LF. In the Nemenyi test, in the CS group there was a statistically significant difference for HR and LF and in the CO group for HR, HF and LF. After applying hierarchical clustering with Euclidean measure and the complete method, dendrograms were drawn up showing similarities for HR, HF and LF values. The cranial techniques and touch might exert a beneficial effect on HRV. Both factors can be used in stressful situations to lower HRV.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with systemic inflammation. A wide range of adipokines activities suggests they influence pathogenesis and infection course. The aim was to assess concentrations of chemerin, omentin, and vaspin among COVID-19 patients with an emphasis on adipokines relationship with COVID-19 severity, concomitant metabolic abnormalities and liver dysfunction. Serum chemerin, omentin and vaspin concentrations were measured in serum collected from 70 COVID-19 patients at the moment of admission to hospital, before any treatment was applied and 20 healthy controls.
