Understanding the ocular structural changes are fundamental to defining strategies for myopia prevention and management. This study aimed to establish age-gender specific normative LMS parameters for axial length to generate percentile and Z-score growth curves in a population of Chinese schoolchildren. A total of 14,760 individuals aged 6 to 15 years from Wuhan, central China, contributed to this study. The LMS method was used for the calculation of LMS parameters and the generation of percentile and Z-score growth curves for axial length. Growth curves derived from the LMS parameters were compared with those originally calculated. Axial elongation was age- and percentile-dependent. The highest elongation rate occurred at the 98th percentile in the range 6 to 9 years, being up to 1.46 mm in boys and 1.42 mm in girls. The largest differences between original and newly generated growth curves were detected at the 98th percentile at age 15; 0.78 mm (females) and 0.63 mm (males). Multinomial logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic analyses revealed Z-scores as a good predictor for estimating high myopia development. Liriomyza chinensis is a serious pest of onions in many countries, especially in East Asia. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of this species and compared it with five other Agromyzidae species. The L. chinensis mitogenome is a double-stranded 16,175 bp circular molecule with an A + T content of 78.3%. It contains 37 genes and a control region as do the sequenced Liriomyza species. The mitogenomes of L. chinensis and other Agromyzidae species showed a clear bias in nucleotide composition with a positive AT-skew. Most PCGs used standard ATN as start codons, and TAN as termination codons. The tRNAs exhibited the typical clover-leaf structure, except for tRNASer (AGN) and the two rRNA genes are conserved with those of other Agromyzids. The L. chinensis mitogenome control region included several conserved regions, including a poly-T, two (TA)n and one poly-A stretch, which are considered important replication and transcription. The 13 PCGs were used to study the phylogeny of L. chinensis and five related Agromyzids. Analysis by maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference and genetic distance suggest congruent phylogenetic relationships in Liriomyza spp. and provide a useful supplement to taxonomic classification by morphology.

In this study, we report the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome, mtDNA) of Aposthonia borneensis and compare it with another sequenced webspinner, Aposthonia japonica. The A. borneensis mitogenome is smaller than A. japonica, but the size of each gene and the A + T content of protein-coding genes (PCGs) are almost identical in the two mitogenomes. Among the PCGs, atp6 shows the highest evolutionary rate and cox1 the lowest. The mtDNA map in A. borneensis is similar to Drosophila yakuba, but distinctly different from A. japonica, which has extensive rearrangement. Phylogenetic analyses dated the divergence time of the two webspinners at ca. 103 Ma. We speculate that the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of A. borneensis and A. japonica was divided into several geographic groups during the Pangea breakup. Geographic isolation between the Japanese islands and the continental southeastern Asia resulted in the divergent evolution of A. borneensis and A. japonica, thus generating mtDNA structural variations between the two species. Based on the phylogenetic analyses and specific distributional features, the genus Aposthonia was supported as non-monophyly, and we speculate that both highly rearranged and relatively conserved mitogenomes exist in other webspinners.

The RAS association domain family protein 1a (RASSF1A), a tumor suppressor gene at 3p21.3, plays a very important role in various cancers, including the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Hypermethylation of CpG islands in the RASSF1A promoter region contribute to epigenetic inactivation. However, the association between RASSF1A promoter methylation and HNSCC remains unclear and controversial. Therefore, a meta-analysis was performed in the study to identify the association. We identified the eligible studies through searching PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases with a systematic searching strategy. The information on characteristics of each study and prevalence of RASSF1A methylation were collected. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Meta-regression was performed to analyze heterogeneity and funnel plots were applied to evaluate publication bias. A total of 550 HNSCC patients and 404 controls from twelve eligible studies were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, a significant association was observed between RASSF1A methylation status and HNSCC risk under a random-effects model (OR = 2.93, 95% CI: 1.58-5.46). There was no significant publication bias observed. The meta-analysis suggested that there was a significant association between aberrant RASSF1A methylation and HNSCC.

Diapause is a complex and dynamic process. Chilo suppressalis, an important rice pest in Asia enters facultative diapause as larvae. Our results demonstrated in Yangzhou, China, diapause was initiated between September 4 and 12, 2010. After diapause termination, C. suppressalis remained in quiescence in the field for as long as three months. The average time between collection of field larvae of C. suppressalis and their pupation decreased as the season progressed from fall to next spring. Unexpectedly, the pupated ratio of female to male in the initiation of diapause was 0.22. The abundance of hsp90, hsp70, hsp60 and CsAQP1 all peaked on January 8 or 15, 2011. Nitric oxide (NO) is a secondary messenger that is positively correlated with the diapause of C. suppressalis. Among several geographically separated populations of C. suppressalis, there are no significant differences in the mRNA levels of hsp70, hsp60 or CsAQP1.
