Intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs) in the elderly are still a big challenge for clinical doctors. Although proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) and bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BPH) are selected by most of the orthopaedic surgeons for elderly ITFs patients, there is still no consensus on the superiority of PFNA and BPH for ITFs in elderly. In this study, we hypothesized that BPH should not be selected as the primary option for ITFs in elderly patients, and analyzed clinical data of 202 elderly ITFs patients aged 80 years or more treated with PFNA (Group A) and BPH (Group B) to compare the early outcome of PFNA and BPH for ITFs in elderly patients aged 80 years or more. We found that operation time and blood loss during surgery in group A are less than in Group B. Time of weight bearing after operation in Group A is longer than in Group B. Incidence of complications 2 weeks after operation in Group A is 9.29% less than 25.81% in Group B (χ2 = 9.539, p = 0.002). Mortality rates 12 months after operation in Group A is 11.43% similar with 19.35% in Group B (χ2 = 2.261, p = 0.133). Harris Hip Score 12 months after operation in Group A is 68.00 ± 29.11 points similar with 65.73 ± 33.29 points in Group B (t = 0.490, p = 0.625). Therefore, for elderly ITFs patients aged 80 years or more, BPH should not be selected as the primary option for ITFs in elderly patients.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is the primary causative pathogen of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), affecting children with severe neurological complications. Pyroptosis is a programmed cell death characterized by cell lysis and inflammatory response. Although proinflammatory response has been implicated to play important roles in EV71-caused diseases, the involvement of pyroptosis in the pathogenesis of EV71 is poorly defined. We show that EV71 infection induced caspase-1 activation. Responding to the activation of caspase-1, the expression and secretion of both IL-1β and IL-18 were increased in EV71-infected cells. The treatment of caspase-1 inhibitor markedly improved the systemic response of the EV71-infected mice. Importantly, caspase-1 inhibitor suppressed EV71 replication in mouse brains. Similarly, pyroptosis was activated by the infection of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), an important member of the Enterovirus genus. Caspase-1 activation and the increased expression of IL-18 and NLRP3 were demonstrated in HeLa cells infected with CVB3. Caspase-1 inhibitor also alleviated the overall conditions of virus-infected mice with markedly decreased replication of CVB3 and reduced expression of caspase-1. These results indicate that pyroptosis is involved in the pathogenesis of both EV71 and CVB3 infections, and the treatment of caspase-1 inhibitor is beneficial to the host response during enterovirus infection.

Light is recently recognized as a modulator able to activate the hippocampus and modulate memory processing, but little is known about the molecular mechanisms. Here, we report that in mice, a short pulse of white light before learning dramatically improves consolidation of contextual fear memory during the night. The light exposure increases hippocampal active p21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1) and CA1 long-term potentiation (LTP). These light effects are abolished in PAK1 knockout and dominant-negative transgenic mice, but preserved by expression of constitutively active PAK1 in the hippocampus. Our results indicate that light can act as a switch of PAK1 activity that modulate CA1 LTP and thereby memory consolidation without affecting learning and short-term memory.

Computational studies considering both thermodynamic and kinetic aspects revealed that graphyne, a carbon material that has recently been of increasing interest, favours unprecedented homogeneous “in-plane” addition reactions. The addition of dichlorocarbene to the C(sp)-C(sp) bond, a site with outstanding regioselectivity in graphyne, proceeds via a stepwise mechanism. Due to their homogeneous nature, additions occurring at C(sp)-C(sp) bonds yield structurally ordered two-dimensional carbon compounds (2DCCs). 2DCCs have electronic band structures near the Fermi level that are similar to those of graphene and are either electrically semi-conductive or metallic depending on whether the reactions break the hexagonal symmetry. Notably, 2DCCs can be further functionalised through substitution reactions with little damage to the extended π-electron conjugation system. These results suggest that 2DCCs derived from graphyne have physical properties comparable to those of graphene and chemical properties superior to those of graphene. Therefore, 2DCCs are expected to be better suited to practical applications.
