We aimed to derive comprehensive MRI parameters that reflect intramuscular fat infiltration severity for designated lower extremity levels, based on semiquantitative analyses in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) patients. We reviewed lower extremity MRIs of 116 CMT1A patients. Intramuscular fat infiltration grading using the Mercuri scale was performed for the non-dominant lower extremity at three levels (proximal, mid, and distal) for the thigh and at two levels (proximal and distal) for the lower leg. Based on MRI results, the following parameters were calculated for each level and for entire muscles: fat infiltration proportion (FIP), significant fat infiltration proportion (SigFIP), and severe fat infiltration proportion (SevFIP). The objectives of this study were to assess changes in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters after radiation therapy (RT) for bone metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to evaluate their prognostic value. This prospective study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. Fourteen patients with HCC underwent RT (30 Gy in 10 fractions once daily) for bone metastases. The ADC and DCE-MRI parameters and the volume of the target lesions were measured before (baseline) and one month after RT (post-RT). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare the parameters between the baseline and post-RT MRI. The parameters were compared between patients with or without disease progression in RT fields using the Mann–Whitney test. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the interobserver agreement. The medians of the ADC, rate constant [kep], and volume fraction of the extravascular extracellular matrix [ve] in the baseline and post-RT MRI were 0.67 (range 0.61–0.72) and 0.75 (range 0.63–1.43) (× 10–3 mm2/s) (P = 0.027), 836.33 (range 301.41–1082.32) and 335.80 (range 21.86–741.87) (× 10–3/min) (P = 0.002), and 161.54 (range 128.38–410.13) and 273.99 (range 181.39–1216.95) (× 10–3) (P = 0.027), respectively. The medians of the percent change in the ADC of post-RT MRI in patients with progressive disease and patients without progressive disease were − 1.35 (range − 6.16 to 6.79) and + 46.71 (range 7.71–112.81) (%) (P = 0.011), respectively. The interobserver agreements for all MRI parameters were excellent (intraclass correlation coefficients > 0.8). In conclusion, the ADC, kep, and ve of bone metastases changed significantly after RT. The percentage change in the ADC was closely related to local tumor progression.

The objectives of this study were to assess the fat fraction (FF) and cross-sectional area (CSA) of the sciatic nerve in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) patients using Dixon-based proton density fat quantification MRI and to elucidate its potential association with clinical parameters. Thigh MRIs of 18 CMT1A patients and 18 age- and sex-matched volunteers enrolled for a previous study were reviewed. Analyses for FF and CSA of the sciatic nerve were performed at three levels (proximal to distal). CSA and FF were compared between the two groups and among the different levels within each group. The relationship between the MRI parameters and clinical data were assessed in the CMT1A patients. The CMT1A patients showed significantly higher FF at level 3 (p = 0.0217) and significantly larger CSA at all three levels compared with the control participants (p < 0.0001). Comparisons among levels showed significantly higher FF for levels 2 and 3 than for level 1 and significantly larger CSA for level 2 compared with level 1 in CMT1A patients. CSA at level 3 correlated positively with the CMT Neuropathy Score version 2 (CMTNSv2). In conclusion, the sciatic nerve FF of CMT1A patients was significantly higher on level 3 compared with both the controls and the measurements taken on more proximal levels, suggesting the possibility of increased intraepineurial fat within the sciatic nerves of CMT1A patients, with a possible distal tendency. Sciatic nerve CSA at level 3 correlated significantly and positively with CMTNSv2, suggesting its potential value as an imaging marker for clinical severity.

This study aimed to investigate whether in vivo MR-electrical properties tomography (MR-EPT) is feasible in musculoskeletal tissues by evaluating the conductivity of muscle, cartilage, and peripheral nerve around the knee joint, and to explore whether these measurements change after exercise. This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board. On February 2020, ten healthy volunteers provided written informed consent and underwent MRI of the right knee using a three-dimensional balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) sequence. To test the effect of loading, the subjects performed 60 squatting exercises after baseline MRI, immediately followed by post-exercise MRI with the same sequences. After reconstruction of conductivity map based on the bSSFP sequence, conductivity of muscles, cartilages, and nerves were measured. Measurements between the baseline and post-exercise MRI were compared using the paired t-test. Test–retest reliability for baseline conductivity was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient. The baseline and post-exercise conductivity values (mean ± standard deviation) [S/m] of muscles, cartilages, and nerves were 1.73 ± 0.40 and 1.82 ± 0.50 (p = 0.048), 2.29 ± 0.47 and 2.51 ± 0.37 (p = 0.006), and 2.35 ± 0.57 and 2.36 ± 0.57 (p = 0.927), respectively. Intraclass correlation coefficient for the baseline conductivity of muscles, cartilages, and nerves were 0.89, 0.67, and 0.89, respectively. In conclusion, in vivo conductivity measurement of musculoskeletal tissues is feasible using MR-EPT. Conductivity of muscles and cartilages significantly changed with an overall increase after exercise.

One of the most important physical factors related to the thermal conductivity of composites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) is the dimensions of the GNPs, that is, their lateral size and thickness. In this study, we reveal the relationship between the thermal conductivity of polymer composites and the realistic size of GNP fillers within the polymer composites (measured using three-dimensional (3D) non-destructive micro X-ray CT analysis) while minimizing the effects of the physical parameters other than size. A larger lateral size and thickness of the GNPs increased the likelihood of the matrix-bonded interface being reduced, resulting in an effective improvement in the thermal conductivity and in the heat dissipation ability of the composites. The thermal conductivity was improved by up to 121% according to the filler size; the highest bulk and in-plane thermal conductivity values of the composites filled with 20 wt% GNPs were 1.8 and 7.3 W/m·K, respectively. The bulk and in-plane thermal conductivity values increased by 650 and 2,942%, respectively, when compared to the thermal conductivity values of the polymer matrix employed (0.24 W/m·K).
