Polymeric hydrogel with the incorporation of nano to submicro-meter sized materials forms an exhilarating new generation of composite hydrogels. Most of the applications of hydrogels are in aqueous environments in which they swell to a very high degree. This emanates from low density of the polymer chains, making them highly inferior in terms of physical strength and their prospective applications. In order to address the weak mechanical properties, hydrogels have successfully prepared with high tensile strength and toughness by reinforcing the acrylamide (AAm) network with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) modified silica particles (MSiO2) as chemical cross-linker. The MSiO2 cross-linkers are prepared from narrow-dispersed silica particles (SiO2) of 100 nm, 200 nm, and 300 nm diameters to investigate the effect of cross-linker sizes on the mechanical strengths of hydrogels. The presence of MSiO2 remarkably increases the stretching ability and toughness of hydrogels compared to conventional hydrogels. The tensile strength, toughness, and Young’s modulus of the hydrogel decrease from 30 to 11 kPa, 409 to 231 kJ/m3, and 0.16 to 0.11 kPa, respectively, while the SiO2 particle size increase from 100 to 300 nm and the concentration of AAm and MSiO2 (%) are kept constant. The compressive strength and toughness of the hydrogel decrease from 34 to 18 kPa and 6 to 4 kJ/m3, respectively, but the Young’s modulus increases from 0.11 to 0.19 kPa. This work is excellent proof of regulating mechanical strength of hydrogel by adjusting the particle size of MSiO2 cross-linkers.

The feasible condition for submerged macrophyte growth is hard to understand as many environmental factors contribute to establishing macrophyte distribution with different intensities generating excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). Among various kinds of ROS, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is relatively stable and can be measured accurately. Thus, for the quantification of submerged macrophyte species, H2O2 can be used to evaluate their distribution in a lake. Submerged macrophytes, such as Potamogeton anguillanus, were abundant in Lake Shinji. The largest biomass distribution was around 1.35 m deep, under low solar radiation intensity, and nearly no biomass was found less than 0.3 m deep, where solar radiation was high. Tissue H2O2 concentrations varied in response to the diurnal photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intensity, which was followed by antioxidant activities, though slightly delayed. Laboratory experiments were conducted with different PAR intensities or salinity concentrations. A stable level of H2O2 was maintained up to about 200 μmol m−2 s−1 of PAR for 30 days, followed by a gradual increase as PAR increased. The H2O2 concentration increased with higher salinity. A change in Chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentration is associated with an altering H2O2 concentration, following a unique negative relationship with H2O2 concentration. If H2O2 exceeded 45 μmol/gFW, the homeostasis collapsed, and H2O2 and Chl-a significantly declined afterward. The above findings indicate that H2O2 has a negative effect on the physiological condition of the plant. The increase in H2O2 concentration was prevented by antioxidant activities, which elevated with increasing H2O2 concentration.

The growing number of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) engenders a genuine concern for achieving sustainable development. Properly recycling ELV is paramount to checking pollution, reducing landfills, and conserving natural resources. The present study evaluates the sustainability of India's ELV recycling system from techno-socio-economic and environmental aspects as an instrumental step for assessing performance and progress. This investigation has performed the Strength-Weakness-Opportunity-Threat (SWOT) analysis to evaluate ELV recycling in the long-term viability and examine the critical factors and potential. This research makes practical recommendations for effectively encountering persistent challenges in the ELV recycling system based on Indian values. This research adopts an explorative and Integrated bottom-up mixed approach; it interfaces qualitative and quantitative data and secondary research. This study reveals that the social, economic, technological, and environmental aspects of the sustainability of India's ELV recycling system are comparatively limited. The SWOT analysis demonstrates that potential market size and resource recovery are more significant strengths, whereas lack of an appropriate framework and limited technology are major challenges in the recycling of ELVs in India. Sustainable development and economic viability have emerged as great opportunities, while informality and environmental impact have surfaced as primary potential threats to ELV recycling in India. This paper offers insights and yields critical real-world data that may assist in rational decision-making and developing and implementing any subsequent framework.

Transcription factors (TFs) form the major class of regulatory genes and play key roles in multiple plant stress responses. In most eukaryotic plants, transcription factor (TF) families (WRKY, MADS-box and MYB) activate unique cellular-level abiotic and biotic stress-responsive strategies, which are considered as key determinants for defense and developmental processes. Arabidopsis and rice are two important representative model systems for dicot and monocot plants, respectively. A comprehensive comparative study on 101 OsWRKY, 34 OsMADS box and 122 OsMYB genes (rice genome) and, 71 AtWRKY, 66 AtMADS box and 144 AtMYB genes (Arabidopsis genome) showed various relationships among TFs across species. The phylogenetic analysis clustered WRKY, MADS-box and MYB TF family members into 10, 7 and 14 clades, respectively. All clades in WRKY and MYB TF families and almost half of the total number of clades in the MADS-box TF family are shared between both species. Chromosomal and gene structure analysis showed that the Arabidopsis-rice orthologous TF gene pairs were unevenly localized within their chromosomes whilst the distribution of exon–intron gene structure and motif conservation indicated plausible functional similarity in both species. The abiotic and biotic stress-responsive cis-regulatory element type and distribution patterns in the promoter regions of Arabidopsis and rice WRKY, MADS-box and MYB orthologous gene pairs provide better knowledge on their role as conserved regulators in both species. Co-expression network analysis showed the correlation between WRKY, MADs-box and MYB genes in each independent rice and Arabidopsis network indicating their role in stress responsiveness and developmental processes.

The inhibitory action of fifteen benzyloxy ortho/para-substituted chalcones (B1-B15) was evaluated against human monoamine oxidases (hMAOs). All the molecules inhibited hMAO-B isoform more potently than hMAO-A. Furthermore, the majority of the molecules showed strong inhibitory actions against hMAO-B at 10 μM level with residual activities of less than 50%. Compound B10 has an IC50 value of 0.067 μM, making it the most potent inhibitor of hMAO-B, trailed by compound B15 (IC50 = 0.12 μM). The thiophene substituent (B10) in the A-ring exhibited the strongest hMAO-B inhibition structurally, however, increased residue synthesis did not result in a rise in hMAO-B inhibition. In contrast, the benzyl group at the para position of the B-ring displayed more hMAO-B inhibition than the other positions. Compounds B10 and B15 had relatively high selectivity index (SI) values for hMAO-B (504.791 and 287.600, respectively). Ki values of B10 and B15 were 0.030 ± 0.001 and 0.033 ± 0.001 μM, respectively. The reversibility study showed that B10 and B15 were reversible inhibitors of hMAO-B. PAMPA assay manifested that the benzyloxy chalcones (B10 and B15) had a significant permeability and CNS bioavailability with Pe value higher than 4.0 × 10–6 cm/s. Both compounds were stabilized in protein–ligand complexes by the π-π stacking, which enabled them to bind to the hMAO-B enzyme's active site incredibly effectively. The hMAO-B was stabilized by B10- and B15-hMAO-B complexes, with binding energies of − 74.57 and − 87.72 kcal/mol, respectively. Using a genetic algorithm and multiple linear regression, the QSAR model was created. Based on the best 2D and 3D descriptor-based QSAR model, the following statistics were displayed: R2 = 0.9125, Q2loo = 0.8347. These findings imply that B10 and B15 are effective, selective, and reversible hMAO-B inhibitors.

The commercial development of unconventional resources with multiply fractured horizontal wells has been in the spotlight over the last ten years because of the significant contribution of unconventional oil and gas (UOG) reservoirs to the total US oil and gas production. UOG reservoirs contain multiscale fractures with heterogeneous properties, so the focus has been on efficient and accurate models that can account for these fractures individually. One of such models is the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM), which has been applied to various types of fractured reservoirs. This work shows that the application of EDFM in fractured tight rocks yields significant errors because it cannot account for the expected transient flow between the matrix and fractures. To address the limitation when EDFM is used in tight rocks with structured Cartesian grids, we modified the matrix/fracture non-neighboring connection (NNC) flux in EDFM by multiplying it with a transient factor. We obtained this factor as in the transient matrix/fracture transfer term for dual-continuum models and implemented it in in our open-source shale simulator. We simulated a single vertical fracture in the middle of a tight reservoir with and without this EDFM modification and show the importance of the proposed modification. We also simulated cyclic gas enhanced oil recovery (CGEOR) in a fractured Bakken shale oil well and analyzed the model results using standard rate-transient analysis plots to evaluate the significance of the proposed modification. The results show that the standard EDFM underestimates oil and gas production by up to 73% at early times. This work presents the first analytical modification of EDFM to account for the nonlinear pressure drop expected near fracture surfaces. Comparing the modified and standard EDFM model results to a reference solution shows that the modified EDFM matches it. In contrast, the standard EDFM cannot match the reference solution when we use structured Cartesian grids with linear spacing. Additionally, by timing the simulation of a representative Bakken shale oil reservoir with 256 fractures, we show that the analytical modification proposed is only 1.5% slower than the standard EDFM.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is an incurable malignancy of B-cells. In this study, bioinformatics analyses were conducted to identify possible pathogenic roles of CK2α, which is a protein encoded byCSNK2A1, in the progression and aggressiveness of CLL. Furthermore, various computational tools were used to search for a competent inhibitor of CK2α from fungal metabolites that could be proposed for CLL therapy. In CLL patients, high-expression ofCSNK2A1was associated with early need for therapy (n = 130,p p = 0.005). Consistently, bioinformatics analyses showedCSNK2A1to associate with/play roles in CLL proliferation and survival-dependent pathways. Furthermore, PPI network analysis identified interaction partners of CK2α (PPI enrichmentpvalue = 1 × 10–16) that associated with early need for therapy (n = 130,p 7 M−1to 3.77 × 108 M−1) compared with the native ligand (ΔG: − 10.8, Kd: 8.3 × 107 M−−1). Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulation study established that Butyl Xanalterate-CK2α complex continuously remained stable throughout the simulation time (100 ns). Moreover, Butyl Xanalterate interacted with most of the catalytic residues, where complex was stabilized by more than 65% hydrogen bond interactions, and a significant hydrophobic interaction with residue Phe113. Here, high-expression ofCSNK2A1was implicated in the progression and poor prognosis of CLL, making it a potential therapeutic target in the disease. Butyl Xanalterate showed stable and strong interactions with CK2α, thus we propose it as a competitive inhibitor of CK2α for CLL therapy.

The sensations to own and control a body as well as being located in a body describe the relation between ourselves and our body, termed embodiment. Embodiment plays a central role in our everyday actions. However, its assessment is challenging. Recent findings suggest that measures on embodiment are confounded by demand characteristics and suggestibility. To investigate the impact of demand characteristics on embodiment and presence, we compared results from an online experiment measuring participants’ expectations, to the same experiment in virtual reality (VR). In the online experiment, participants watched a video of a participant performing the VR experiment. In the VR experiment, participants performed a soap-bubble-kicking task, which allowed the feelings of embodiment and presence to arise. We manipulated temporo-spatial movement synchrony (Movement: synchronous, asynchronous) and avatar visibility (Visibility: visible, invisible). In addition, we assessed participants’ suggestibility with exercises. The introduced manipulations influenced the ratings in both experiments similarly. Embodiment ratings were additionally affected by suggestibility. Altogether, our results show that participants were aware of the research hypotheses, which indicates that demand characteristics confound embodiment and presence research alike. Overcoming challenges of demand characteristics is crucial to correctly interpret scientific results and to translate these results into applied settings.
