To study the alterations of sleep quality and circadian rhythm genes expressions upon elderly thyroid nodule patients, the risk factors associated with thyroid malignancies, and the potential relationship involved. The elderly people enrolled in our study were divided into three groups according to the thyroid histopathology: malignant nodule group, benign nodule group, and normal group, and the clinical data and sleep quality were collected. Among the patients of surgery, 56 fresh thyroid tissues were collected for real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry and western blotting analysis of CLOCK, BMAL1, CRYs and PERs. Fluorinated graphene has a tunable band gap that is useful in making flexible graphene electronics. But the carbon–fluorine (C–F) bonds in fluorinated graphene can be easily broken by increased temperature or electron beam irradiation. Here, we demonstrate that the stability of fluorinated graphene is mainly determined by its C–F configuration. The double-sided fluorinated graphene has a much stronger stability than the single-sided fluorinated graphene under the same irradiation dose. Density functional theory calculations show that the configuration of double-sided fluorinated graphene has a negative and low formation energy, indicating to be an energetically stable structure. On the contrary, the formation energy of single-sided fluorinated graphene is positive, leading to an unstable C–F bonding that is easily broken by the irradiation. Our findings make a new step towards a more stable and efficient design of graphene electronic devices.

Several carbon dots doping with diferent elements (Ca, Ag, Au) were fabricated and their catalytic properties had been investigated in this paper. It was found that the Ag-doped carbon dots (CDAg) had played a role of mimic enzyme on the reaction of HAuCl4-H2O2 and generated nanogold particles with surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) effects. The aptamer (Apt) can be adsorbed on the CDAg surface and cause the catalysis weakening. When the target Pb(II) was added, it would combine with the Apt to produce firm complexes Pb-Apt and desorb CDAg, which caused its catalytic effect restore. The formed nanogold had a strong RRS peak (at 375 nm) and a high SERS peak (at 1615 cm−1) in the presence of molecular probe (Victoria blue B, VBB). The dual-model signals of SERS and RRS increased linearly with Pb(II) concentration increase within the scope of 0.006–0.46 μmol/L and 0.01–0.46 μmol/L. And their detection limits respectively were 0.0032 μmol/L and 0.0048 μmol/L Pb(II).

The mammalian integumentary system plays important roles in body homeostasis, and dysfunction of melanogenesis or epidermal development may lead to a variety of skin diseases, including melanoma. Skin pigmentation in humans and coat color in fleece-producing animals are regulated by many genes. Among them, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and paired-box 3 (PAX3) are at the top of the cascade and regulate activities of many important melanogenic enzymes. Here, we report for the first time that cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) is an essential regulator of MITF and PAX3. Cdk5 knockdown in mice causes a lightened coat color, a polarized distribution of melanin and hyperproliferation of basal keratinocytes. Reduced expression of Keratin 10 (K10) resulting from Cdk5 knockdown may be responsible for an abnormal epidermal structure. In contrast, overexpression of Cdk5 in sheep (Ovis aries) only produces brown patches on a white background, with no other observable abnormalities. Collectively, our findings show that Cdk5 has an important functional role in the regulation of melanin production and transportation and in normal development of the integumentary system.

Utilizing nanomachining technologies, it is possible to manipulate the heat transport in graphene by introducing different defects. However, due to the difficulty in suspending large-area single-layer graphene (SLG) and limited temperature sensitivity of the present probing methods, the correlation between the defects and thermal conductivity of SLG is still unclear. In this work, we developed a new method for fabricating micro-sized suspended SLG. Subsequently, a focused ion beam (FIB) was used to create nanohole defects in SLG and tune the heat transport. The thermal conductivity of the same SLG before and after FIB radiation was measured using a novel T-type sensor method on site in a dual-beam system. The nanohole defects decreased the thermal conductivity by about 42%. It was found that the smaller width and edge scrolling also had significant restriction on the thermal conductivity of SLG. Based on the calculation results through a lattice dynamics theory, the increase of edge roughness and stronger scattering on long-wavelength acoustic phonons are the main reasons for the reduction in thermal conductivity. This work provides reliable data for understanding the heat transport in a defective SLG membrane, which could help on the future design of graphene-based electrothermal devices.

Exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) is a useful biomarker of various physiological conditions, including asthma and other pulmonary diseases. Herein a fast and sensitive analytical method has been developed for the quantitative detection of eNO based on extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (EESI-MS). Exhaled NO molecules selectively reacted with 2-phenyl-4, 4, 5, 5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (PTIO) reagent and eNO concentration was derived based on the EESI-MS response of 1-oxyl-2-phenyl-4, 4, 5, 5-tetramethylimidazoline (PTI) product. The method allowed quantification of eNO below ppb level (~0.02 ppbv) with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 11.6%. In addition, eNO levels of 20 volunteers were monitored by EESI-MS over the time period of 10 hrs. Long-term eNO response to smoking a cigarette was recorded and the observed time-dependent profile was discussed. This work extends the application of EESI-MS to small molecules (
