Abstract The multiplexing capacity of conventional fluorescence materials are significantly limited by spectral overlap and background interference, mainly due to their short-lived fluorescence lifetimes. Here, we adopt a novel Gd3+ doping strategy in NaYF4 host materials, realized tuning of upconversion photoluminescence (UCPL) lifetimes at selective emissions. Time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC), was applied to measure the photoluminescence lifetimes accurately. We demonstrated the large dynamic range of lifetimes of upconversion nanoparticles with good upconversion quantum yields, mainly owing to the dominance of high efficient energy transfer upconversion mechanism. The exceptional tunable properties of upconversion materials allow great potential for them to be utilized in biotechnology and life sciences.

The industrial sector faces a significant challenge in finding the highly effective and efficient treatments for harmful dye-based color effluents. In this study, pure and cobalt doped barium hexaferrite of chemical formula, Ba1-xCoxFe12O19 (x = 0—0.06) are made via sol–gel auto-combustion (SC) methodology. These nano hexaferrite based catalysts are employed for the photodegradation of Congo Red (CR) pollutant. X-rays diffraction investigation confirms the creation of pristine M-type with a hexagonal structure for the prepared hexaferrites. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis shows the existence of the hexagonal-shaped grains with well-defined grain boundaries. The reduction in the band gap of prepared hexaferrites are observed with the cobalt doping which is helpful in enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy examination verifies the oxidation states of all elements found in the fabricated specimens. From the photocatalytic measurements, it is observed that the CR dye attains the removal percentage of 87.90%, 90.73%, 91.86% and 94.88% for the BaFe12O19 (x = 0.00), Ba0.08Co0.02Fe12O19 (x = 0.02), Ba0.06Co0.04Fe12O19 (x = 0.04), and Ba0.04Co0.06Fe12O19 (x = 0.06) hexaferrites under the natural sunlight of two hours. In addition, the reusability potential of prepared hexaferrites is also studied over the six consecutive experimental cycles. The excellent photodegradation performance of the Co- doped barium M-type hexaferrites for the removal of CR dye makes them highly useful for the wastewater remediation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gd3+- free carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by one-step solvothermal method using urea, citric acid and 3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline as precursors. Additionally, Gd3+-doped CDs were prepared by incorporating gadolinium chloride (Gd3+ ions) into the synthesis. Size selection of the purified CDs was achieved through filter membranes ranging from 3 kDa to 100 kDa. The chemical composition and optical properties of the obtained samples were characterized by Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), proton relaxation time measurements, Ultraviolet–visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence spectroscopies. A comparative analysis revealed a strong size-dependent behavior in the optical properties of both Gd3+-doped and Gd3+-free CDs. Furthermore, in vitro tests confirmed the non-cytotoxicity of Gd3+-doped CDs, indicating their potential applicability in biomedicine for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and red fluorescence-based cell and tissue imaging. Abstract Doped ceria has been extensively explored as an efficient electrolyte material for intermediate to low temperature solid oxide fuel cell. Among other ceria electrolytes, gadolinia doped ceria (GDC) is one of the most extensively studied electrolyte materials for low temperature SOFC applications. Here, co-precipitation method is employed to synthesize GDC nanoparticles with stoichiometric ratio of GdxCe1−xO2−δ (with 0 $$\le$$ ≤ x $$\le$$ ≤ 0.20). In this process, the molecular water of the precursors has been utilized during the co-precipitation to avoid possible agglomeration caused by hydrogen bonding. The cubic phase formation was examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman profile ascribing absence of other phases. XRD along with Reitveld refinement confirm the presence of cubic phase of ceria and Raman profile confirms the oxygen vacancies due to the non-stoichiometry created in CeO2 lattice. The granularity of the sample was observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with elemental mapping by EDS. It is observed from FESEM that the grains are compact in nature and the density observed was around 98% of the theoretical density. The electrochemical behavior was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which was taken between the temperature ranges of 350–700 °C. It is observed from the EIS study that ceria doped with 15 mol % Gd3+ (Gd0.15Ce0.85O2−δ) is having highest grain boundary ionic conductivity of about 0.104 S cm−1 at 700 °C with an activation energy of 0.81 eV. This work demonstrates the correlation between oxygen vacancy generation and the enhancement of ionic conductivity with Gd3+ doping in ceria.

Laser ceramics have emerged as promising candidates of solid-state laser gain media. However, most laser ceramics are currently focused on lasing in the infrared wavelength range. The very limited options of host materials and the increased optical scattering losses at shorter wavelengths within ceramics have greatly limited the development of visible laser ceramics. Here we report visible laser ceramics with a composition of 0.5%Pr3+,5%Y3+:SrF2, in which a visible (orange) laser oscillation at 605 nm has been successfully achieved at room temperature pumped by InGaN blue laser diodes with a maximum slope efficiency of 8.1%. The ceramics were fabricated by vacuum hot pressing (VHP) of wet-chemistry synthesized 0.5%Pr3+,5%Y3+:SrF2 powders, followed by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). It was found that the visible laser ceramics exhibited a lower optical scattering loss along the processing pressure direction of the VHP process, indicating a uniaxial anisotropy in optical transmission within the ceramics. To our best knowledge, the current work is the first report on visible laser ceramics lasing in the orange region at ambient temperature, fabricated from chemically synthesized powders, which could pave the way for future scientific research on and industrial applications of more sophisticated and cost-effective visible laser ceramics. The non-biodegradable nature of waste emitted from the agriculture and industrial sector contaminates freshwater reserves. Fabrication of highly effective and low-cost heterogeneous photocatalysts is crucial for sustainable wastewater treatment. The present research study aims to construct a novel photocatalyst using a facile ultrasonication-assisted hydrothermal method. Metal sulphides and doped carbon support materials work well to fabricate hybrid sunlight active systems that efficiently harness green energy and are eco-friendly. Boron-doped graphene oxide-supported copper sulphide nanocomposite was synthesized hydrothermally and was assessed for sunlight-assisted photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye. BGO/CuS was characterized through various techniques such as SEM–EDS, XRD, XPS, FTIR, BET, PL, and UV–Vis DRS spectroscopy. The bandgap of BGO-CuS was found to be 2.51 eV as evaluated through the tauc plot method. The enhanced dye degradation was obtained at optimum conditions of pH = 8, catalyst concentration (20 mg/100 mL for BGO-CuS), oxidant dose (10 mM for BGO-CuS), and optimum time of irradiation was 60 min. The novel boron-doped nanocomposite effectively degraded methylene blue up to 95% under sunlight. Holes and hydroxyl radicals were the key reactive species. The mechanochemical ball milling followed by heating at 650 °C for 5 h successfully produced the single-phase Bi2VO5.5 powder. Catalytic activity for methylene blue dye degradation was investigated. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to confirm the phase formation. The sample's charge carrier transportation behavior was ascertained using time-dependent photocurrent analysis. The piezo-photocatalysis experiment yielded a 63% degradation efficiency for the ball-milled Bi2VO5.5 sample. The pseudo-first-order kinetics of the piezo-photocatalytic dye degradation are discerned, and the significant k value of 0.00529 min−1 is achieved. The scavenger test declares the h+ radical is the predominant active species during the piezo-photocatalysis experiment. Vigna radiata seeds were used in a phytotoxicity test to evaluate the germination index. The mechanochemical activation method facilitates reactions by lowering reaction temperature and time. The effect of improved piezo-photocatalytic efficiency on the ball-milled Bi2VO5.5 powder is an unexplored area, and we have attempted to investigate it. The Dy3+ doped (Lu,Gd)3Al5O12 garnet phosphors with spherical morphology were obtained via homogeneous precipitation method, followed by calcination at 1100 °C. The particle morphology does not change significantly, but can be controlled by adjusting the urea content. The synthesis, structure, luminescent properties of precursor and resultant particles were analyzed by the combined technologies of XRD, FE-SEM, PLE/PL decay behavior. The (Lu0.975Dy0.025)AG phosphors display strong blue and yellow emission at ~481 nm (4F9/2 → 6H15/2 transition of Dy3+) and ~582 nm 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition of Dy3+), respectively. The phosphors have similar color coordinate and temperature of (~0.33, ~0.34), ~5517 K, respectively, which are closed to the white emission. The particle size and luminescent intensity decreased while the lifetime increased with the urea concentration increasing. The Gd3+ addition does not alter the shape/position of emission peaks, but enhance the blue and yellow emission of Dy3+ owing to the efficient Gd3+ → Dy3+ energy transfer. The deficiency of Y3Al5O12:Ce (YAG:Ce) luminescence in red component can be compensated by doping Gd3+, thus lead to it being widely used for packaging warm white light-emitting diode devices. This article presents a systematic study on the photoluminescence properties, crystal structures and electronic band structures of (Y1−xGdx)3Al5O12: Ce3+ using powerful experimental techniques of thermally stimulated luminescence, X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) of the valence band, assisted with theoretical calculations on the band structure, density of states (DOS), and charge deformation density (CDD). A new interpretation from the viewpoint of compression deformation of electron cloud in a rigid structure by combining orbital hybridization with solid-state energy band theory together is put forward to illustrate the intrinsic mechanisms that cause the emission spectral shift, thermal quenching, and luminescence intensity decrease of YAG: Ce upon substitution of Y3+ by Gd3+, which are out of the explanation of the classic configuration coordinate model. The results indicate that in a rigid structure, the charge deformation provides an efficient way to tune chromaticity, but the band gaps and crystal defects must be controlled by comprehensively accounting for luminescence thermal stability and efficiency. We studied the dissolution behavior of β NaYF4:Yb(20%), Er(2%) UCNP of two different sizes in biologically relevant media i.e., water (neutral pH), phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM) at different temperatures and particle concentrations. Special emphasis was dedicated to assess the influence of different surface functionalizations, particularly the potential of mesoporous and microporous silica shells of different thicknesses for UCNP stabilization and protection. Dissolution was quantified electrochemically using a fluoride ion selective electrode (ISE) and by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). In addition, dissolution was monitored fluorometrically. These experiments revealed that a thick microporous silica shell drastically decreased dissolution. Our results also underline the critical influence of the chemical composition of the aqueous environment on UCNP dissolution. In DMEM, we observed the formation of a layer of adsorbed molecules on the UCNP surface that protected the UCNP from dissolution and enhanced their fluorescence. Examination of this layer by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mass spectrometry (MS) suggested that mainly phenylalanine, lysine, and glucose are adsorbed from DMEM. These findings should be considered in the future for cellular toxicity studies with UCNP and other nanoparticles and the design of new biocompatible surface coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
