The auditory steady state response (ASSR) arises when periodic sounds evoke stable responses in auditory networks that reflect the acoustic characteristics of the stimuli, such as the amplitude of the sound envelope. Larger for some stimulus rates than others, the ASSR in the human electroencephalogram (EEG) is notably maximal for sounds modulated in amplitude at 40 Hz. To investigate the local circuit underpinnings of the large ASSR to 40 Hz amplitude-modulated (AM) sounds, we acquired skull EEG and local field potential (LFP) recordings from primary auditory cortex (A1) in the rat during the presentation of 20, 30, 40, 50, and 80 Hz AM tones. 40 Hz AM tones elicited the largest ASSR from the EEG acquired above auditory cortex and the LFP acquired from each cortical layer in A1. The large ASSR in the EEG to 40 Hz AM tones was not due to larger instantaneous amplitude of the signals or to greater phase alignment of the LFP across the cortical layers. Instead, it resulted from decreased latency variability (or enhanced temporal consistency) of the 40 Hz response. Statistical models indicate the EEG signal was best predicted by LFPs in either the most superficial or deep cortical layers, suggesting deep layer coordinators of the ASSR. Overall, our results indicate that the recruitment of non-uniform but more temporally consistent responses across A1 layers underlie the larger ASSR to amplitude-modulated tones at 40 Hz.

Spindle-shaped waves of oscillations emerge in EEG scalp recordings during human and rodent non-REM sleep. The association of these 10-16 Hz oscillations with events during prior wakefulness suggests a role in memory consolidation. Human and rodent depth electrodes in the brain record strong spindles throughout the cortex and hippocampus, with possible origins in the thalamus. However, the source and targets of the spindle oscillations from the hippocampus are unclear. Here, we employed an in vitro reconstruction of four subregions of the hippocampal formation with separate microfluidic tunnels for single axon communication between subregions assembled on top of a microelectrode array. We recorded spontaneous 400-1000 ms long spindle waves at 10-16 Hz in single axons passing between subregions as well as from individual neurons in those subregions. Spindles were nested within slow waves. The highest amplitudes and most frequent occurrence suggest origins in CA3 neurons that send feed-forward axons into CA1 and feedback axons into DG. Spindles had 50-70% slower conduction velocities than spikes and were not phase-locked to spikes suggesting that spindle mechanisms are independent of action potentials. Therefore, consolidation of declarative-cognitive memories in the hippocampus may be separate from the more easily accessible consolidation of memories related to thalamic motor function.

We previously reported that pan-cortical effects occur when cognitive tasks end afterdischarges. For this report, we analyzed wavelet cross-coherence changes during cognitive tasks used to terminate afterdischarges studying multiple time segments and multiple groups of inter-electrode-con distances. We studied 12 patients with intractable epilepsy, with 970 implanted electrode contacts, and 39,871 electrode contact combinations. When cognitive tasks ended afterdischarges, coherence varied similarly across the cortex throughout the tasks, but there were gradations with time, distance, and frequency: (1) They tended to progressively decrease relative to baseline with time and then to increase toward baseline when afterdischarges ended. (2) During most time segments, decreases from baseline were largest for the closest inter-contact distances, moderate for intermediate inter-contact distances, and smallest for the greatest inter-contact distances. With respect to our patients intractable epilepsy, the changes found suggest that future therapies might treat regions beyond those closest to regions of seizure onset and treat later in a seizures evolution. Similar considerations might apply to other disorders. Our findings also suggest that cognitive tasks can result in pan-cortical coherence changes that participate in underlying attention, perhaps complementing the better-known regional mechanisms.

Studies on the compounds of aromatic oils and their effects on psychophysiological changes in humans are often conducted separately. To obtain better validation, a suitable protocol is needed that can be extrapolated to large-scale olfactory stimulation experiments. Unfortunately, this type of study is still rarely performed. In this situation, we propose a randomized crossover pilot study on olfactory stimulation with aromatic oils in relation to changes in psychophysiological activity by focusing on white musk aromatic oil due to its popularity in the community. Chemical profiling by TDU-GC-MS (thermal desorption gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) was performed to understand the compounds of the aromatic oils presented. To understand the changes in the participants' impressions and mood states, POMS 2 (Profile of Mood States 2nd Edition) and VAS (Visual analogue scale) were performed in addition to physiological evaluation by using EEG (electroencephalogram), ECG (electrocardiogram) and salivary amylase measurements. The proposed pilot study showed "gorgeous", "sweet", and "like" impression toward white musk aromatic oil under VAS evaluation. Mood evaluation under POMS 2 variables such as Fatigue-Inertia (FI), Tension-anxiety (TA) and TMD (total mood disturbance) were significantly decreased under white musk aromatic oil inhalation. Under current protocol, we can also see the changes in autonomic activity and brain activity during olfactory stimulation. This pilot study could be the first step towards a larger sample size experiment on olfactory stimulation. Quantifying cognitive potential relies on psychometric measures that do not directly reflect cortical activity. While the relationship between cognitive ability and resting state EEG signal dynamics has been extensively studied in children with below-average cognitive performances, there remains a paucity of research focusing on individuals with normal to above-average cognitive functioning. This study aimed to elucidate the resting EEG dynamics in children aged four to 12 years across normal to above-average cognitive potential. Our findings indicate that signal complexity, as measured by Multiscale Entropy (MSE), was not significantly predictive of the level of cognitive functioning. However, utilizing Directed Phase Lag Index (DPLI) as an effective connectivity measure, we observed consistent patterns of information flow between anterior and posterior regions. Fronto-parietal as well as local connectivity patterns were seen across most of the cognitive functions. Moreover, specific connectivity patterns were obtained for each intellectual quotient index (namely verbal comprehension, visuospatial, fluid reasoning, and processing speed indexes as well as full-scale intellectual quotient). These results underscore the presence of long-range connections and support fronto-parietal theories of cognitive abilities within the resting state brain dynamics of children. Deep language models (DLMs) have exhibited remarkable language understanding and generation capabilities, prompting researchers to explore the similarities between their internal mechanisms and human language cognitive processing. This study investigated the representational similarity (RS) between the abstractive summarization (ABS) models and the human brain and its correlation to the performance of ABS tasks. Specifically, representational similarity analysis (RSA) was used to measure the similarity between the representational patterns (RPs) of the BART, PEGASUS, and T5 models' hidden layers and the human brain's language RPs under different spatiotemporal conditions. Layer-wise ablation manipulation, including attention ablation and noise addition was employed to examine the hidden layers' effect on model performance. The results demonstrate that as the depth of hidden layers increases, the models' text encoding becomes increasingly similar to the human brain's language RPs. Manipulating deeper layers leads to more substantial decline in summarization performance compared to shallower layers, highlighting the crucial role of deeper layers in integrating essential information. Notably, the study confirms the hypothesis that the hidden layers exhibiting higher similarity to human brain activity play a more critical role in model performance, with their correlations reaching statistical significance even after controlling for perplexity. These findings deepen our understanding of the cognitive mechanisms underlying language representations in DLMs and their neural correlates, potentially providing insights for optimizing and improving language models by aligning them with the human brain's language-processing mechanisms. Semantic processing is an essential mechanism in human language comprehension and has profound implications for speech brain-computer interface technologies. Despite recent advances in brain imaging techniques and data analysis algorithms, the mechanisms underlying human brain semantic representations remain a topic of debate, specifically whether this occurs through the activation of selectively separated cortical regions or via a network of distributed and overlapping regions. This study investigates spatiotemporal neural representation during the perception of semantic words related to faces, numbers, and animals using electroencephalography. Source‐level analysis focuses on contrasting neural responses to different semantic categories. Critical intervals used in the source contrast analysis are defined using the peak duration of global field power. Effective connectivity, determined through a causality analysis of brain regions activated for semantic processing, is explored. The findings reveal the necessity of a distributed network of regions for processing specific semantic categories and provide evidence suggesting the existence of a neural substrate for semantic representations. Unlike the conventional, embodied, and embrained whole-body movements in the sagittal forward and vertical axes, movements in the lateral/transversal axis cannot be unequivocally grounded, embodied, or embrained. When considering motor imagery for left and right directions, it is assumed that participants have underdeveloped representations due to a lack of familiarity with moving along the lateral axis. In the current study, a 32 electroencephalography (EEG) system was used to identify the oscillatory neural signature linked with lateral axis motor imagery. Following the experimental procedure, 36 healthy participants were instructed and trained to imagine moving left and right from a first-person perspective. On average, greater beta oscillatory activity in the parietal region was observed during right motor imagery compared to left motor imagery. Furthermore, lateral whole-body motion imagery is associated with the posterior multimodal somatosensory parietal areas, which showed significantly more prominent cortico-cortical interconnections when performing right than left motor imagery, as indicated by Phase-Locked Value (PLV) analysis. The findings suggest that the mental simulation of lateral movements, reflecting immature neurocognitive schemata, might engender non-grounded and non-embedded somatosensory and kinesthetic representations that would be associated with the lateralisation of the multimodal cortical vestibular network. Patients who develop chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell-related immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) frequently undergo evaluation with electroencephalography (EEG). We hypothesize that EEG features and Synek scale score, a measure of degree of EEG abnormality, are associated with ICANS severity. Here, we performed a retrospective review of 125 adult patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) who received CAR-T cell therapy from 2010 to 2019, including 53 patients with B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated with 1928z CAR T cells (NCT01044069) and 72 patients with large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) treated with the commercial CAR T products axicabtagene ciloleucel or tisagenlecleucel. We collected video EEG monitoring (27 with B-ALL and 20 with LBCL) and recorded daily EEG features, Synek scores, and ICANS grade for 47 eligible patients. Synek scale and ICANS grade were positively correlated (correlation coefficient 0.47, 95% CI: 0.31–0.60). This was further corroborated in the univariable model associating high Synek scale (3 or 4) with high ICANS grade (OR = 15.2; 95%CI:7.8–29.7, p < 0.0001). EEG features such as discontinuity, absence of posterior dominant rhythm, and presence of generalized sharp waves were statistically significantly associated with higher ICANS grade in univariable models. In the multivariable model, discontinuity (OR = 4.2 (95%CI:1.3–13.8, p = 0.02) and absence of posterior dominant rhythm (OR = 10.5 (95%CI:4.6–23.9, p < 0.0001) were statistically associated with higher ICANS grade. Overall, EEG discontinuity and absence of posterior dominant rhythm were independently associated with higher severity of neurotoxicity. The temporal resolution of adults' visual attention has been linked to the frequency of alpha-band oscillations in electroencephalogram (EEG) signal, with higher Peak Alpha Frequency (PAF) being associated with better visual temporal processing skills. However, relatively less is known about neural mechanisms underlying individual differences in the temporal resolution of visual attention in infancy. This study investigated the role of PAF in visual temporal processing in early infancy. In a sample of 6-month-old infants (n = 62) we examined the relationship between PAF extracted from resting-state EEG, and saccadic latencies in a predictive cueing task where the appearance of a reward was predicted by higher or lower frequency of two flickering objects. Results showed that higher PAF was associated with shorter saccadic latencies in a condition with higher differences between the two flickering frequencies, speaking for the involvement of PAF in visual temporal attention in early development. Additionally, we found that infants were generally faster to orient to the reward in trials where both peripheral stimuli were flickering at relatively lower frequencies, roughly corresponding to the theta frequency band. With the development of brain-computer interface industry, large amounts of related applications have entered people's vision. BCI applications based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) are widely used because they do not require pre-training and have high information transmission rates. However, in the actual use of SSVEP stimulus paradigm, the subjects will produce visual fatigue with the use, and fatigue will affect the transmission efficiency. In this experiment, an experimental environment consisting of two paradigm stimulus frequencies (7.5 Hz, 15 Hz), three resolutions (800 × 600, 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080) and three refresh rates (120 Hz, 240 Hz, 360 Hz) is set up. The Likert scale is used to collect subjective fatigue and preference scores, and the EEG acquisition system and eye tracker are used to collect objective data. Using the proposed information entropy-CRITIC algorithm to combine subjective and objective indicators, a fatigue assessment system (display screen fitness-DSF) is innovated to score different experimental environments. The higher the DSF score, the better the visual experience. The results show that when using the 7.5 Hz SSVEP paradigm, the combination of 360 Hz and 1920 × 1080 can bring the best visual experience. When using the 15 Hz SSVEP paradigm, the combination of 240 Hz and 1280 × 720 is the best. Decoding locomotor tasks is crucial in cognitive neuroscience for understanding brain responses to physical tasks. Traditional methods like EEG offer brain activity insights but may require additional modalities for enhanced interpretative precision and depth. The integration of EEG with ocular metrics, particularly eye blinks, presents a promising avenue for understanding cognitive processes by combining neural and ocular behaviors. However, synchronizing EEG and eye blink activities poses a significant challenge due to their frequently inconsistent alignment. Our study with 35 participants performing various locomotor tasks such as standing, walking, and transversing obstacles introduced a novel methodology, pcEEG+, which fuses EEG principal components (pcEEG) with aligned eye blink data (syncBlink). The results demonstrated that pcEEG+ significantly improved decoding accuracy in locomotor tasks, reaching 78% in some conditions, and surpassed standalone pcEEG and syncBlink methods by 7.6% and 22.7%, respectively. The temporal generalization matrix confirmed the consistency of pcEEG+ across tasks and times. The results were replicated using two driving simulator datasets, thereby confirming the validity of our method. This study demonstrates the efficacy of the pcEEG+ method in decoding locomotor tasks, underscoring the importance of temporal synchronization for accuracy and offering a deeper insight into brain activity during complex movements. In this study, we examined the relatively unexplored realm of face perception, investigating the activities within human brain face-selective regions during the observation of faces at both subordinate and superordinate levels. We recorded intracranial EEG signals from the ventral temporal cortex in neurosurgical patients implanted with subdural electrodes during viewing of face subcategories (human, mammal, bird, and marine faces) as well as various non-face control stimuli. The results revealed a noteworthy correlation in response patterns across all face-selective areas in the ventral temporal cortex, not only within the same face category but also extending to different face categories. Intriguingly, we observed a systematic decrease in response correlation coupled with an increased response onset time from human face to mammalian face, bird face and marine faces. Our result aligns with the notion that distinctions at the basic level category (e.g., human face versus non-human face) emerges earlier than those at the superordinate level (e.g., animate versus inanimate). This indicates response gradient in the representation of facial images within human face-sensitive regions, transitioning progressively from human faces to non-face stimuli. Our findings provide insights into spatiotemporal dynamic of face representations which varies spatially and at different timescales depending on the face subcategory represented. In everyday tasks, the choices we make incorporate complex trade-offs between conflicting factors that affect how we will achieve our goals. Previous experimental research has used dual-target visual search to determine how people flexibly adjust their behaviour and make choices that optimise their decisions. In this experiment, we leveraged a visual search task that incorporates complex trade-offs, and electroencephalography (EEG), to understand how neural mechanisms of selective attention contribute to choice behaviour in these tasks. On each trial, participants could choose to respond to the gap location on either of two possible targets. Each target was colour coded such that colour indicated which of the two had the easier gap discrimination. Orthogonally, we manipulated the set size of coloured distractors to modulate how efficiently each target could be found. As a result, optimised task performance required participants to trade-off conflicts between the ease of finding a target given the current set size, and the ease of making its associated gap discrimination. Our results confirm that participants are able to flexibly adjust their behaviour, and trade-off these two factors to maintain their response speed and accuracy. Additionally, the N2pc and SPCN components elicited by search displays could reliably predict the choice that participants would ultimately make on a given trial. These results suggest that initial attentional processes may help to determine the choice participants make, highlighting the central role that attention may play in optimising performance on complex tasks. Alpha oscillations are associated with various psychiatric disorders, with many studies focusing on the prefrontal cortex, where transcranial alternating current stimulation (TACS) is applied in the alpha frequency band. This approach often involves selecting individualized alpha frequencies to resonate with their endogenous alpha oscillations. While strong alpha oscillations (8–13 Hz) are typically induced when the eyes are closed, they can also occur during the resting state with eyes open. However, it remains unclear whether these alpha oscillations share a common neural generation mechanism. Exploring which of these alpha oscillations is more suitable as a stable alpha peak frequency is a question of significant interest. Therefore, to systematically study this issue, we specifically collected resting-state electroencephalographic (EEG) data from the prefrontal region of 40 individuals, under both eyes-open and closed- eye conditions, with multiple follow-ups extending up to nine months. Through spectral analysis on each person's entire dataset and averaging the results, we observed a significant positive correlation between the alpha-band power in the eyes-open and the eyes-closed states, in terms of both absolute power and relative power. Further analysis revealed that this correlation was primarily contributed by the periodic activity within the alpha band. Upon modelling the oscillatory components, we discovered distinct differences in the oscillatory characteristics-such as number of the alpha sub-oscillations between the eyes-open state and the eyes-closed state. Our study is the first to systematically explored the relationship between alpha oscillations in the prefrontal cortex in the eyes-open and eyes-closed states, identifying both shared part of the neural generation mechanism and some distinct neural mechanisms that are unique to each state. Abstract Anterior cruciate ligament injuries (ACLi) impact football players substantially leading to performance declines and premature career endings. Emerging evidence suggests that ACLi should be viewed not merely as peripheral injuries but as complex conditions with neurophysiological aspects. The objective of the present study was to compare kicking performance and associated cortical activity between injured and healthy players. Ten reconstructed and 15 healthy players performed a kicking task. Kicking biomechanics were recorded using wearable inertial measurement unit sensors. Cortical activity was captured with a 64-electrode mobile electroencephalography. Multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis of biomechanics revealed increased variability in foot external rotation among injured players. Source-derived event-related spectral perturbations indicated significant differences in posterior alpha and frontal theta oscillations between the two groups. Furthermore, kick-related complexity of these regions as indexed by MSE was reduced in injured players at medium and coarse scales. Our findings suggest sensorimotor changes during kicking in injured players, which may necessitate compensatory strategies involving augmented attention at the cost of processing visuospatial information. This conflict may hinder the integration of task-relevant information across distributed networks. Our study provides preliminary insights into the neurophysiological implications of ACLi within football context and underscores the potential for prospective research.

Abstract The Optimal electrode configuration of Electroencephalograms (EEG) systems for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) detection and monitoring in non-clinical settings, i.e. number of electrodes and the positions of the electrodes, remains to be explored. In the current study, we explored the optimization of electrode configuration for MCI detection. We used a 32-channel EEG device to record the data of 21 MCI patients and 20 cognitively normal elderly (NC) undergoing working memory (WM) tasks. Based on the differential value (MCI group vs. NC group) from the Power Spectral Density (PSD) value of each electrode in θ and α frequency band during WM coding stage, six different electrode configurations were obtained: (1) four electrodes in the occipital lobe (OCL4); (2) three electrodes in the prefrontal lobe (PRL3); (3) four electrodes in the parietal lobe (PLL4), (4) eight electrodes in occipital combined parietal lobe (OPL8), (5) seven electrodes in occipital combined prefrontal lobe (OPL7); and (6) seven electrodes in parietal combined prefrontal lobe (PPL7). A multi-parameter combination-assisted binary logistic regression model was established to distinguish two groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the MCI diagnostic power of each electrode configuration. The area under curve (AUC) of the ROC of electrode configurations OCL4, PRL3, PLL4, OPL8, OPL7 and PPL7 were 0.765, 0.683, 0.729, 0.83, 0.788, and 0.769, respectively. And the sensitivity of six electrode configurations were 0.962, 0.794, 0.873, 0.943, 0.859, and 0.938, respectively. Among these six configurations, OCL4, i.e. PO3, PO4, PO8, and PO7, had the highest sensitivity 96.2%, which meant that relying solely on these four electrodes of the occipital lobe had the potential to serve as an objective tool for preliminary screening of MCI. The abnormal brain rhythm characteristics of the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes in the memory encoding stage of MCI provide a new perspective for MCI-WM impairment, which has the potential to be a novel biomarker for the early detection of pathological age-related cognitive decline. Further, a potential four-electrode configuration may be used for a novel detecting and monitoring EEG system of MCI in non-clinical settings.

Abstract Technological innovation has been crucial in the evolution of our lineage, with tool use and production linked to complex cognitive processes. While previous research has examined the cognitive demands of early stone toolmaking, the neurocognitive aspects of early hominin tool use remain largely underexplored. This study relies on electroencephalography to investigate brain activation patterns associated with two distinct early hominin tool-using behaviors: forceful hammerstone percussion, practiced by both humans and non-human primates and linked to the earliest proposed stone tool industries, and precise flake cutting, an exclusive hominin behavior typically associated with the Oldowan. Our results show increased engagement of the frontoparietal regions during both tasks. Furthermore, we observed significantly increased beta power in the frontal and centroparietal areas when manipulating a cutting flake compared to a hammerstone, and increased beta activity over contralateral frontal areas during the aiming (planning) stage of the tool-using process. This original empirical evidence suggests that certain fundamental brain changes during early hominin evolution may be linked to precise stone tool use. These results offer new insights into the complex interplay between technology and human brain evolution and encourage further research on the neurocognitive underpinnings of hominin tool use.

Abstract Migraine is one of the most common neurological disorders in the US. Currently, the diagnosis and management of migraine are based primarily on subjective self-reported measures, which compromises the reliability of clinical diagnosis and the ability to robustly discern candidacy for available therapies and track treatment response. In this study, we used a computational pipeline for the automated, rapid, high-throughput, and objective analysis of encephalography (EEG) data at Cleveland Clinic to identify signatures that correlate with migraine. We performed two independent analyses, a prospective analysis (n = 62 subjects) and a retrospective age-matched analysis on a larger cohort (n = 734) obtained from the sleep registry at Cleveland Clinic. In the prospective analysis, no significant difference between migraine and control groups was detected in the mean power spectral density (PSD) of an all-electrodes montage in the frequency range of 1–32 Hz, whereas a significant PSD increase in single occipital electrodes was found at 12 Hz in migraine patients. We then trained machine learning models on the binary classification of migraine versus control using EEG power features, resulting in high accuracies (82–83%) with occipital electrodes’ power at 12 Hz ranking highest in the contribution to the model’s performance. Further retrospective analysis also showed a consistent increase in power from occipital electrodes at 12 and 13 Hz in migraine patients. These results demonstrate distinct and localized changes in brain activity measured by EEG that can potentially serve as biomarkers in the diagnosis and personalized therapy for individuals with migraine.

Abstract A concern in the field of autism electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker discovery is their lack of reproducibility. In the present study, we considered the problem of learning reproducible associations between multiple features of resting state (RS) neural activity and autism, using EEG data collected during a RS paradigm from 36 to 96 month-old children diagnosed with autism (N = 224) and neurotypical children (N = 69). Specifically, EEG spectral power and functional connectivity features were used as inputs to a regularized generalized linear model trained to predict diagnostic group (autism versus neurotypical). To evaluate our model, we proposed a procedure that quantified both the predictive generalization and reproducibility of learned associations produced by the model. When prioritizing both model predictive performance and reproducibility of associations, a highly reproducible profile of associations emerged. This profile revealed a distinct pattern of increased gamma power and connectivity in occipital and posterior midline regions associated with an autism diagnosis. Conversely, model selection based on predictive performance alone resulted in non-robust associations. Finally, we built a custom machine learning model that further empirically improved robustness of learned associations. Our results highlight the need for model selection criteria that maximize the scientific utility provided by reproducibility instead of predictive performance.

Abstract Among patients with epilepsy, 30–40% experience recurrent seizures even after adequate antiseizure medications therapies, making them refractory. The early identification of refractory epilepsy is important to provide timely surgical treatment for these patients. In this study, we analyze interictal electroencephalography (EEG) data to predict drug refractoriness in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) who were treated with monotherapy at the time of the first EEG acquisition. Various EEG features were extracted, including statistical measurements and interchannel coherence. Feature selection was performed to identify the optimal features, and classification was conducted using different classifiers. Functional connectivity and graph theory measurements were calculated to identify characteristics of refractory TLE. Among the 48 participants, 34 (70.8%) were responsive, while 14 (29.2%) were refractory over a mean follow-up duration of 38.5 months. Coherence feature within the gamma frequency band exhibited the most favorable performance. The light gradient boosting model, employing the mutual information filter-based feature selection method, demonstrated the highest performance (AUROC = 0.821). Compared to the responsive group, interchannel coherence displayed higher values in the refractory group. Interestingly, graph theory measurements using EEG coherence exhibited higher values in the refractory group than in the responsive group. Our study has demonstrated a promising method for the early identification of refractory TLE utilizing machine learning algorithms.

Abstract Agreeableness, one of the five personality traits, is associated with socio-cognitive abilities. This study investigates how agreeableness impacts the perception of social interactions, while considering sex that might moderate this effect. Sixty-two young adults, preselected to ensure a wide range of agreeableness scores, underwent EEG recording while viewing images depicting real-world scenes of two people either engaged in a social interaction or acting independently. Behavioral results suggested a trend where higher agreeableness scores predicted better ability to detect social interactions primarily in males. ERP analysis showed that individuals with higher agreeableness exhibited stronger neural differentiation between social and non-social stimuli, observed in both females and males, and in the whole sample. This neural differentiation, occurring early in the processing timeline, was particularly extensive in males, and predictive of their performance. Three independent source analyses, conducted for the whole sample and for each sex, identified the engagement of right fronto-parietal regions for the ERP-agreeableness association. These findings enhance our understanding of how agreeableness shapes the neural mechanisms underlying social interaction detection and emphasize sex as an important factor in this dynamic. They also highlight the need for tailored approaches that consider personality traits and sex in clinical interventions targeting social impairments.

Abstract The multivariate temporal response function (mTRF) is an effective tool for investigating the neural encoding of acoustic and complex linguistic features in natural continuous speech. In this study, we investigated how neural representations of speech features derived from natural stimuli are related to early signs of cognitive decline in older adults, taking into account the effects of hearing. Participants without ( $$n = 25$$ n = 25 ) and with ( $$n = 19$$ n = 19 ) early signs of cognitive decline listened to an audiobook while their electroencephalography responses were recorded. Using the mTRF framework, we modeled the relationship between speech input and neural response via different acoustic, segmented and linguistic encoding models and examined the response functions in terms of encoding accuracy, signal power, peak amplitudes and latencies. Our results showed no significant effect of cognitive decline or hearing ability on the neural encoding of acoustic and linguistic speech features. However, we found a significant interaction between hearing ability and the word-level segmentation model, suggesting that hearing impairment specifically affects encoding accuracy for this model, while other features were not affected by hearing ability. These results suggest that while speech processing markers remain unaffected by cognitive decline and hearing loss per se, neural encoding of word-level segmented speech features in older adults is affected by hearing loss but not by cognitive decline. This study emphasises the effectiveness of mTRF analysis in studying the neural encoding of speech and argues for an extension of research to investigate its clinical impact on hearing loss and cognition.

A concern in the field of autism electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker discovery is their lack of reproducibility. In the present study, we considered the problem of learning reproducible associations between multiple features of resting state (RS) neural activity and autism, using EEG data collected during a RS paradigm from 36 to 96 month-old children diagnosed with autism (N = 224) and neurotypical children (N = 69). Specifically, EEG spectral power and functional connectivity features were used as inputs to a regularized generalized linear model trained to predict diagnostic group (autism versus neurotypical). To evaluate our model, we proposed a procedure that quantified both the predictive generalization and reproducibility of learned associations produced by the model. When prioritizing both model predictive performance and reproducibility of associations, a highly reproducible profile of associations emerged. This profile revealed a distinct pattern of increased gamma power and connectivity in occipital and posterior midline regions associated with an autism diagnosis. Conversely, model selection based on predictive performance alone resulted in non-robust associations. Finally, we built a custom machine learning model that further empirically improved robustness of learned associations. With mounting evidence for the benefits of meditation, there has been a growing interest in measuring and quantifying meditative states. This study introduces the Inner Dereification Index (IDI), a class of personalized models designed to quantify the distance from non-meditative states such as mind wandering based on a single individual's neural activity. In addition to demonstrating high classification accuracy (median AUC: 0.996) at distinguishing meditation from thinking states moment by moment, IDI can accurately stratify meditator cohorts by experience, and correctly identify the practices most effective at training the dereification aspect of meditation (decentering from immersion with thoughts and perceptions and recognizing them as mental constructs). These results suggest that IDI models may be a useful real-time proxy for dereification and meditation progress, requiring only 1 min of mind wandering data (and no meditation data) during model training. Thus, they show promise for applications such as real-time meditation feedback, progress tracking, personalization of practices, and potential therapeutic applications of neurofeedback-assisted generation of positive states of consciousness. Recent failures translating preclinical behavioral treatment effects to positive clinical trial results in humans with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) support refocusing attention on biological pathways and associated measures, such as electroencephalography (EEG), with strong translational potential and small molecule target engagement. This study utilized guided machine learning to test promising translational EEG measures (resting power and auditory chirp oscillatory variables) in a large heterogeneous sample of individuals with FXS to identify best performing EEG variables for reliably separating individuals with FXS, and genetically-mediated subgroups within FXS, from typically developing controls. Best performing variables included resting relative frontal theta power, all combined posterior-head resting power bands, posterior peak alpha frequency (PAF), combined PAF across all measured regions, combined theta, alpha, and gamma power during the chirp, and all combined chirp oscillatory variables. Sub-group analyses for resting EEG best discriminated non-mosaic FXS males via frontal theta resting relative power (AUC = 0.8759), even with data reduced to a 20-channel clinical montage (AUC = 0.9062). In the chirp task, FXS females and non-mosaic males were nearly perfectly discriminated by combined theta, alpha, and gamma power (AUC = 0.9444) and a combination of all variables (AUC = 0.9610), respectively. Results support use of resting and auditory oscillatory tasks to reliably identify neural deficit in FXS, and to identify specific translational targets for genetically-mediated sub-groups, supporting potential points for stratification. In neuroscience and clinical diagnostics, electroencephalography (EEG) is a crucial instrument for capturing neural activity. However, this signal is polluted by different artifacts like muscle activity, eye blinks, environmental interference, etc., which makes it more difficult to retrieve important information from the signal. Deep learning methods have demonstrated the potential to lower these artifacts and enhance the EEG's quality in recent years. In this work, a novel deep learning method,"AnEEG" is presented for eliminating artifacts from EEG signal. The quantitative matrices NMSE, RMSE, CC, SNR and SAR are calculated to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed model. Through this process, it was found that the suggested model outperformed wavelet decomposition techniques. The model achieves lower NMSE and RMSE values, which indicates better agreement with the original signal. Achieving higher CC values means stronger linear agreement with the ground truth signals. Additionally, the model shows improvements in both SNR and SAR values. Overall, this suggested approach showcases promising results in improving the quality of EEG data by utilizing deep learning. Sense of agency (SoA) describes the feeling of control over one's actions and their consequences. One proposed index of implicit SoA is temporal compression, which refers to the phenomenon that voluntary actions and their outcomes are perceived as closer in time than they actually are. The present study measured temporal compression in the social norm violation situation. In two experiments participants joined in an Ultimatum game (UG), in which they were presented with offers that varied in fairness and they could choose to accept or reject the offers by pressing buttons. A neutral sound would occur after their choices in the UG and the participants had to estimate the time interval between their button pressing and the occurrence of the sound, and EEG signals were recorded during the task. Experiment 1 demonstrated that rejecting unfair offers decreased the perceived interval between action and outcome compared to accepting fair offers, suggesting a higher level of SoA after rejecting unfair offers. Experiment 2 replicated these results and further revealed an attenuated N1 in response to the sound following rejections of unfairness. Human movement augmentation is a rising field of research. A promising control strategy for augmented effectors involves utilizing electroencephalography through motor imagery (MI) functions. However, performing MI of a supernumerary effector is challenging, to which MI training is one potential solution. In this study, we investigate the validity of a virtual reality (VR) environment as a medium for eliciting MI neural activations for a supernumerary thumb. Specifically, we assess whether it is possible to induce a distinct neural signature for MI of a supernumerary thumb in VR. Twenty participants underwent a two-fold experiment in which they observed movements of natural and supernumerary thumbs, then engaged in MI of the observed movements. Spectral power and event related desynchronization (ERD) analyses at the group level showed that the MI signature associated with the supernumerary thumb was indeed distinct, significantly different from both the baseline and the MI signature associated with the natural thumb, while single-trial classification showed that it is distinguishable with a 78% and 69% classification accuracy, respectively. Furthermore, spectral power and ERD analyses at the group level showed that the MI signatures associated with directional movement of the supernumerary thumb, flexion and extension, were also significantly different, and single-trial classification demonstrated that these movements could be distinguished with 60% accuracy. Higher cardiorespiratory fitness has been associated with improved cognitive control in preadolescent children, with various studies highlighting related brain health benefits. This cross-sectional study aimed to provide novel insights into the fitness-cognition relationship by investigating task-related changes in effective connectivity within two brain networks involved in cognitive control: the cingulo-opercular and fronto-parietal networks. Twenty-four higher-fit and twenty-four lower-fit preadolescent children completed a modified flanker task that modulated inhibitory control demand while their EEG and task performance were concurrently recorded. Effective connectivity for correct trials in the theta band was estimated using directed transfer function. The results indicate that children with higher fitness levels demonstrated greater connectivity in specific directions within the cingulo-opercular network (average effect size, d = 0.72). Brain-behavior correlations demonstrated a positive association between the majority of these connections and general task accuracy, which was also higher in higher fit children (average correlation coefficient, ρ = 0.34). The findings further support a positive relationship between fitness and cognitive performance in children. EEG findings offer novel insights into the potential brain mechanisms underlying the fitness-cognition relationship. The study suggests that increased task-related connectivity within the cingulo-opercular network may mediate the cognitive benefits associated with higher fitness levels in preadolescent children. Notification systems that convey urgency without adding cognitive burden are crucial in human–computer interaction. Haptic feedback systems, particularly those utilizing vibration feedback, have emerged as a compelling solution, capable of providing desirable levels of urgency depending on the application. High-risk applications require an evaluation of the urgency level elicited during critical notifications. Traditional evaluations of perceived urgency rely on subjective self-reporting and performance metrics, which, while useful, are not real-time and can be distracting from the task at hand. In contrast, EEG technology offers a direct, non-intrusive method of assessing the user's cognitive state. Leveraging deep learning, this study introduces a novel approach to evaluate perceived urgency from single-trial EEG data, induced by vibration stimuli on the upper body, utilizing our newly collected urgency-via-vibration dataset. The proposed model combines a 2D convolutional neural network with a temporal convolutional network to capture spatial and temporal EEG features, outperforming several established EEG models. The proposed model achieves an average classification accuracy of 83% through leave-one-subject-out cross-validation across three urgency classes (not urgent, urgent, and very urgent) from a single trial of EEG data. Furthermore, explainability analysis showed that the prefrontal brain region, followed by the central brain region, are the most influential in predicting the urgency level. A follow-up neural statistical analysis revealed an increase in event-related synchronization (ERS) in the theta frequency band (4–7 Hz) with the increased level of urgency, which is associated with high arousal and attention in the neuroscience literature. When a person listens to natural speech, the relation between features of the speech signal and the corresponding evoked electroencephalogram (EEG) is indicative of neural processing of the speech signal. Using linguistic representations of speech, we investigate the differences in neural processing between speech in a native and foreign language that is not understood. We conducted experiments using three stimuli: a comprehensible language, an incomprehensible language, and randomly shuffled words from a comprehensible language, while recording the EEG signal of native Dutch-speaking participants. We modeled the neural tracking of linguistic features of the speech signals using a deep-learning model in a match-mismatch task that relates EEG signals to speech, while accounting for lexical segmentation features reflecting acoustic processing. The deep learning model effectively classifies coherent versus nonsense languages. We also observed significant differences in tracking patterns between comprehensible and incomprehensible speech stimuli within the same language. Previous research has demonstrated a critical link between maternal mental health and infant development. However, there is limited understanding of the role of autonomic regulation in postpartum maternal mental health and infant outcomes. In the current study, we tested 76 mother-infant dyads from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds when infants were 3-months of age. We recorded simultaneous ECG from dyads while baseline EEG was collected from the infant; ECG heart rate variability (HRV) and EEG theta-beta ratio and alpha asymmetry were calculated. Dyadic physiological synchrony was also analyzed to better understand the role of autonomic co-regulation. Results demonstrated that lower maternal HRV was associated with higher self-reported maternal depression and anxiety. Additionally, mothers with lower HRV had infants with lower HRV. Maternal HRV was also associated with higher infant theta-beta ratios, but not alpha asymmetry. Exploratory analyses suggested that for mother-infant dyads with greater physiological synchrony, higher maternal HRV predicted increased infant theta-beta ratio via infant HRV. These findings support a model in which maternal mental health may influence infant neurophysiology via alterations in autonomic stress regulation and dyadic physiological co-regulation. Abstract The auditory steady state response (ASSR) arises when periodic sounds evoke stable responses in auditory networks that reflect the acoustic characteristics of the stimuli, such as the amplitude of the sound envelope. Larger for some stimulus rates than others, the ASSR in the human electroencephalogram (EEG) is notably maximal for sounds modulated in amplitude at 40 Hz. To investigate the local circuit underpinnings of the large ASSR to 40 Hz amplitude-modulated (AM) sounds, we acquired skull EEG and local field potential (LFP) recordings from primary auditory cortex (A1) in the rat during the presentation of 20, 30, 40, 50, and 80 Hz AM tones. 40 Hz AM tones elicited the largest ASSR from the EEG acquired above auditory cortex and the LFP acquired from each cortical layer in A1. The large ASSR in the EEG to 40 Hz AM tones was not due to larger instantaneous amplitude of the signals or to greater phase alignment of the LFP across the cortical layers. Instead, it resulted from decreased latency variability (or enhanced temporal consistency) of the 40 Hz response. Statistical models indicate the EEG signal was best predicted by LFPs in either the most superficial or deep cortical layers, suggesting deep layer coordinators of the ASSR. Overall, our results indicate that the recruitment of non-uniform but more temporally consistent responses across A1 layers underlie the larger ASSR to amplitude-modulated tones at 40 Hz.

Abstract Mild sleep deprivation is widespread in many societies worldwide. Electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis provides information on spatial and temporal characteristics of resting brain network, serving as an indicator of neurophysiological activities at rest. This study seeks to investigate potential neural markers in EEG following mild sleep deprivation of a single night using EEG microstate analysis. Six-minute resting EEG was conducted on thirty healthy adults within 6 hours of waking in the morning and after at least 18 h of sleep deprivation. Translated and validated Malay language Karolinska Sleepiness Scale was used to assess the participants’ degree of sleepiness. Microstate characteristics analysis was conducted on the final 24 subjects based on four standard microstate maps. Microstate C shows a significant increase in mean duration, coverage and occurrence, while microstate D has significantly higher occurrence after sleep deprivation. This study demonstrates notable changes in resting state EEG microstates following mild sleep deprivation. Present findings deepen our understanding of the brain's spatiotemporal dynamics under this condition and suggest the potential utility of neural markers in this domain as components of composite markers for sleep deprivation.

Abstract Although auditory stimuli benefit patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC), the optimal stimulus remains unclear. We explored the most effective electroencephalography (EEG)-tracking method for eliciting brain responses to auditory stimuli and assessed its potential as a neural marker to improve DOC diagnosis. We collected 58 EEG recordings from patients with DOC to evaluate the classification model’s performance and optimal auditory stimulus. Using non-linear dynamic analysis (approximate entropy [ApEn]), we assessed EEG responses to various auditory stimuli (resting state, preferred music, subject’s own name [SON], and familiar music) in 40 patients. The diagnostic performance of the optimal stimulus-induced EEG classification for vegetative state (VS)/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) and minimally conscious state (MCS) was compared with the Coma Recovery Scale-Revision in 18 patients using the machine learning cascade forward backpropagation neural network model. Regardless of patient status, preferred music significantly activated the cerebral cortex. Patients in MCS showed increased activity in the prefrontal pole and central, occipital, and temporal cortices, whereas those in VS/UWS showed activity in the prefrontal and anterior temporal lobes. Patients in VS/UWS exhibited the lowest preferred music-induced ApEn differences in the central, middle, and posterior temporal lobes compared with those in MCS. The resting state ApEn value of the prefrontal pole (0.77) distinguished VS/UWS from MCS with 61.11% accuracy. The cascade forward backpropagation neural network tested for ApEn values in the resting state and preferred music-induced ApEn differences achieved an average of 83.33% accuracy in distinguishing VS/UWS from MCS (based on K-fold cross-validation). EEG non-linear analysis quantifies cortical responses in patients with DOC, with preferred music inducing more intense EEG responses than SON and familiar music. Machine learning algorithms combined with auditory stimuli showed strong potential for improving DOC diagnosis. Future studies should explore the optimal multimodal sensory stimuli tailored for individual patients. Abstract The mechanism by which subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) leads to chronic neurologic deficits is unclear. One possibility is that blood activates microglia to drive inflammation that leads to synaptic loss and impaired brain function. Using the endovascular perforation model of SAH in rats, we investigated short-term effects on microglia together with long-term effects on EEG and neurologic function for up to 3 months. Within the first week, microglia were increased both at the site of injury and diffusely across the cortex (2.5-fold increase in SAH compared to controls, p = 0.012). Concomitantly, EEGs from SAH animals showed focal increases in slow wave activity and diffuse reduction in fast activity. Comparing artificial neural networks with outputs of neuroimaging techniques has recently seen substantial advances in (computer) vision and text-based language models. Here, we propose a framework to compare biological and artificial neural computations of spoken language representations and propose several new challenges to this paradigm. The proposed technique is based on a similar principle that underlies electroencephalography (EEG): averaging of neural (artificial or biological) activity across neurons in the time domain, and allows to compare encoding of any acoustic property in the brain and in intermediate convolutional layers of an artificial neural network. Our approach allows a direct comparison of responses to a phonetic property in the brain and in deep neural networks that requires no linear transformations between the signals. We argue that the brain stem response (cABR) and the response in intermediate convolutional layers to the exact same stimulus are highly similar without applying any transformations, and we quantify this observation. The proposed technique not only reveals similarities, but also allows for analysis of the encoding of actual acoustic properties in the two signals: we compare peak latency (i) in cABR relative to the stimulus in the brain stem and in (ii) intermediate convolutional layers relative to the input/output in deep convolutional networks. We also examine and compare the effect of prior language exposure on the peak latency in cABR and in intermediate convolutional layers. Substantial similarities in peak latency encoding between the human brain and intermediate convolutional networks emerge based on results from eight trained networks (including a replication experiment). The proposed technique can be used to compare encoding between the human brain and intermediate convolutional layers for any acoustic property and for other neuroimaging techniques.

Automated preprocessing methods are critically needed to process the large publicly-available EEG databases, but the optimal approach remains unknown because we lack data quality metrics to compare them. Here, we designed a simple yet robust EEG data quality metric assessing the percentage of significant channels between two experimental conditions within a 100 ms post-stimulus time range. Because of volume conduction in EEG, given no noise, most brain-evoked related potentials (ERP) should be visible on every single channel. Using three publicly available collections of EEG data, we showed that, with the exceptions of high-pass filtering and bad channel interpolation, automated data corrections had no effect on or significantly decreased the percentage of significant channels. Referencing and advanced baseline removal methods were significantly detrimental to performance. Rejecting bad data segments or trials could not compensate for the loss in statistical power. Automated Independent Component Analysis rejection of eyes and muscles failed to increase performance reliably. We compared optimized pipelines for preprocessing EEG data maximizing ERP significance using the leading open-source EEG software: EEGLAB, FieldTrip, MNE, and Brainstorm. Only one pipeline performed significantly better than high-pass filtering the data.

Recognizing an individual's preference state for potential romantic partners based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals holds significant practical value in enhancing matchmaking success rates and preventing romance fraud. Despite some progress has been made in this field, challenges such as high-dimensional feature space and channel redundancy limited the technology's practical application. The aim of this study is to explore the most discriminative EEG features and channels, in order to enhance the recognition performance of the system, while maximizing the portable and practical value of EEG-based systems for recognizing romantic attraction. To achieve this goal, we first conducted an interesting simulated dating experiment to collect the necessary data. Next, EEG features were extracted from various dimensions, including band power and asymmetry index features. Then, we introduced a novel method for EEG feature and channel selection that combines the sequential forward selection (SFS) algorithm with the frequency-based feature subset integration (FFSI) algorithm. Finally, we used the random forest classifier (RFC) to determine a person's preference state for potential romantic partners. Experimental results indicate that the optimal feature subset, selected using the SFS-FFSI method, attained an average classification accuracy of 88.42%. Methods to quantify cortical hyperexcitability are of enormous interest for mapping epileptic networks in patients with focal epilepsy. We hypothesize that, in the resting state, cortical hyperexcitability increases firing-rate correlations between neuronal populations within seizure onset zones (SOZs). This hypothesis predicts that in the gamma frequency band (40–200 Hz), amplitude envelope correlations (AECs), a relatively straightforward measure of functional connectivity, should be elevated within SOZs compared to other areas. To test this prediction, we analyzed archived samples of interictal electrocorticographic (ECoG) signals recorded from patients who became seizure-free after surgery targeting SOZs identified by multiday intracranial recordings. We show that in the gamma band, AECs between nodes within SOZs are markedly elevated relative to those elsewhere. AEC-based node strength, eigencentrality, and clustering coefficient are also robustly increased within the SOZ with maxima in the low-gamma band (permutation test Z-scores > 8) and yield moderate discriminability of the SOZ using ROC analysis (maximal mean AUC ~ 0.73). By contrast to AECs, phase locking values (PLVs), a measure of narrow-band phase coupling across sites, and PLV-based graph metrics discriminate the seizure onset nodes weakly. Our study aimed to verify the possibilities of effectively applying chronnectomics methods to reconstruct the dynamic processes of network transition between three types of brain states, namely, eyes-closed rest, eyes-open rest, and a task state. The study involved dense EEG recordings and reconstruction of the source-level time-courses of the signals. Functional connectivity was measured using the phase lag index, and dynamic analyses concerned coupling strength and variability in alpha and beta frequencies. The results showed significant and dynamically specific transitions regarding processes of eyes opening and closing and during the eyes-closed-to-task transition in the alpha band. These observations considered a global dimension, default mode network, and central executive network. The decrease of connectivity strength and variability that accompanied eye-opening was a faster process than the synchronization increase during eye-opening, suggesting that these two transitions exhibit different reorganization times. While referring the obtained results to network studies, it was indicated that the scope of potential similarities and differences between rest and task-related networks depends on whether the resting state was recorded in eyes closed or open condition. Although auditory stimuli benefit patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC), the optimal stimulus remains unclear. We explored the most effective electroencephalography (EEG)-tracking method for eliciting brain responses to auditory stimuli and assessed its potential as a neural marker to improve DOC diagnosis. We collected 58 EEG recordings from patients with DOC to evaluate the classification model's performance and optimal auditory stimulus. Using non-linear dynamic analysis (approximate entropy [ApEn]), we assessed EEG responses to various auditory stimuli (resting state, preferred music, subject's own name [SON], and familiar music) in 40 patients. The diagnostic performance of the optimal stimulus-induced EEG classification for vegetative state (VS)/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) and minimally conscious state (MCS) was compared with the Coma Recovery Scale-Revision in 18 patients using the machine learning cascade forward backpropagation neural network model. Regardless of patient status, preferred music significantly activated the cerebral cortex. Patients in MCS showed increased activity in the prefrontal pole and central, occipital, and temporal cortices, whereas those in VS/UWS showed activity in the prefrontal and anterior temporal lobes. Patients in VS/UWS exhibited the lowest preferred music-induced ApEn differences in the central, middle, and posterior temporal lobes compared with those in MCS. The resting state ApEn value of the prefrontal pole (0.77) distinguished VS/UWS from MCS with 61.11% accuracy. The cascade forward backpropagation neural network tested for ApEn values in the resting state and preferred music-induced ApEn differences achieved an average of 83.33% accuracy in distinguishing VS/UWS from MCS (based on K-fold cross-validation). EEG non-linear analysis quantifies cortical responses in patients with DOC, with preferred music inducing more intense EEG responses than SON and familiar music. Machine learning algorithms combined with auditory stimuli showed strong potential for improving DOC diagnosis. Future studies should explore the optimal multimodal sensory stimuli tailored for individual patients. Mild sleep deprivation is widespread in many societies worldwide. Electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis provides information on spatial and temporal characteristics of resting brain network, serving as an indicator of neurophysiological activities at rest. This study seeks to investigate potential neural markers in EEG following mild sleep deprivation of a single night using EEG microstate analysis. Six-minute resting EEG was conducted on thirty healthy adults within 6 hours of waking in the morning and after at least 18 h of sleep deprivation. Translated and validated Malay language Karolinska Sleepiness Scale was used to assess the participants' degree of sleepiness. Microstate characteristics analysis was conducted on the final 24 subjects based on four standard microstate maps. Microstate C shows a significant increase in mean duration, coverage and occurrence, while microstate D has significantly higher occurrence after sleep deprivation. This study demonstrates notable changes in resting state EEG microstates following mild sleep deprivation. Present findings deepen our understanding of the brain's spatiotemporal dynamics under this condition and suggest the potential utility of neural markers in this domain as components of composite markers for sleep deprivation. Exoskeleton-based support for patients requires the learning of individual machine-learning models to recognize movement intentions of patients based on the electroencephalogram (EEG). A major issue in EEG-based movement intention recognition is the long calibration time required to train a model. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning approach that eliminates the need for a calibration session. This approach is validated on healthy subjects in this study. We will use the proposed approach in our future rehabilitation application, where the movement intention of the affected arm of a patient can be inferred from the EEG data recorded during bilateral arm movements enabled by the exoskeleton mirroring arm movements from the unaffected to the affected arm. For the initial evaluation, we compared two trained models for predicting unilateral and bilateral movement intentions without applying a classifier transfer. For the main evaluation, we predicted unilateral movement intentions without a calibration session by transferring the classifier trained on data from bilateral movement intentions. Our results showed that the classification performance for the transfer case was comparable to that in the non-transfer case, even with only 4 or 8 EEG channels. Our results contribute to robotic rehabilitation by eliminating the need for a calibration session, since EEG data for training is recorded during the rehabilitation session, and only a small number of EEG channels are required for model training. Electrophysiological brain activity has been shown to synchronize with the quasi-regular repetition of grammatical phrases in connected speech—so-called phrase-rate neural tracking. Current debate centers around whether this phenomenon is best explained in terms of the syntactic properties of phrases or in terms of syntax-external information, such as the sequential repetition of parts of speech. As these two factors were confounded in previous studies, much of the literature is compatible with both accounts. Here, we used electroencephalography (EEG) to determine if and when the brain is sensitive to both types of information. Twenty native speakers of Mandarin Chinese listened to isochronously presented streams of monosyllabic words, which contained either grammatical two-word phrases (e.g., catch fish, sell house) or non-grammatical word combinations (e.g., full lend, bread far). Within the grammatical conditions, we varied two structural factors: the position of the head of each phrase and the type of attachment. Within the non-grammatical conditions, we varied the consistency with which parts of speech were repeated. Tracking was quantified through evoked power and inter-trial phase coherence, both derived from the frequency-domain representation of EEG responses. As expected, neural tracking at the phrase rate was stronger in grammatical sequences than in non-grammatical sequences without syntactic structure. Moreover, it was modulated by both attachment type and head position, revealing the structure-sensitivity of phrase-rate tracking. We additionally found that the brain tracks the repetition of parts of speech in non-grammatical sequences. These data provide an integrative perspective on the current debate about neural tracking effects, revealing that the brain utilizes regularities computed over multiple levels of linguistic representation in guiding rhythmic computation. This study focused on detecting the reflections of healing and change in cortex activation in full-face transplantation and lesions patients on EEG activity. Face transplant patients have facial lesions before transplantation and, to identify pre-face transplant patients' brain activity in the absence of pre-transplant recordings, we used data obtained from pre-transplant facial lesion patients. Ten healthy, four facial lesion and three full-face transplant patients participated in this study. EEG data recorded for four different sensory stimuli (brush from the right face, right hand, left face, and left-hand regions) were analyzed using wavelet packet transform method. EEG waves were analyzed for standard bands. Our findings indicate significant change in the 2–4 Hz frequency range which may be a result of ongoing or previous cortical reorganization for face lesion and transplant patients. Alterations of the delta wave seen in patients with facial lesion and face transplant can also be explained by the intense central plasticity. Recent advances in visual decoding have enabled the classification and reconstruction of perceived images from the brain. However, previous approaches have predominantly relied on stationary, costly equipment like fMRI or high-density EEG, limiting the real-world availability and applicability of such projects. Additionally, several EEG-based paradigms have utilized artifactual, rather than stimulus-related information yielding flawed classification and reconstruction results. Our goal was to reduce the cost of the decoding paradigm, while increasing its flexibility. Therefore, we investigated whether the classification of an image category and the reconstruction of the image itself is possible from the visually evoked brain activity measured by a portable, 8-channel EEG. To compensate for the low electrode count and to avoid flawed predictions, we designed a theory-guided EEG setup and created a new experiment to obtain a dataset from 9 subjects. We compared five contemporary classification models with our setup reaching an average accuracy of 34.4% for 20 image classes on hold-out test recordings. For the reconstruction, the top-performing model was used as an EEG-encoder which was combined with a pretrained latent diffusion model via double-conditioning. After fine-tuning, we reconstructed images from the test set with a 1000 trial 50-class top-1 accuracy of 35.3%. While not reaching the same performance as MRI-based paradigms on unseen stimuli, our approach greatly improved the affordability and mobility of the visual decoding technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
