In this study, we proposed an approach to recommend environmental flows in highly regulated areas, considering the multiple time scales of hydrological processes and water requirements. Water resources were seasonally allocated to the agricultural sector using a benefit-maximizing model, based on water deficiency at different crop growth stages. The economic feedback was evaluated after securing different levels of initial environmental flows. The final environmental flows were recommended to maintain a balance between the ecosystem and irrigation water needs. A case study was applied in the Baiyangdian watershed, China. The results show that a benefit-maximizing model can reduce the total economic losses to the maximum potential, which contributes to alleviating water use conflicts between agriculture and the ecosystem. However, the environmental flows cannot be maintained without the sacrifice of production losses, except for in extremely wet years. Average environmental flows could be secured at around 3.1, 4.3 and 5.4 × 108 m3 in dry, average, and wet years, respectively, with less than 10% production loss. Additional water transfer projects, as well as economic compensation strategies, are suggested to meet both ecosystem and agricultural needs. The planned economic compensation during 2010–2015 was 16.3 × 108 Yuan, giving priority to securing environmental flows, and accounting for 7% of the total agricultural output value. The suggested amount of water resource transferred by the South-to-North Transfer Projects was 19 × 108 m3, which is enough to alleviate water use conflicts between different stakeholders in dry years. This study provided a method to protect ecosystems in a more sustainable way.

Waxy maize has many excellent characteristics in terms of its nutritional and economic value. In recent decades, the waxy maize germplasm has increased dramatically as a result of different selection methods. We collected 200 waxy maize inbred accessions from different origins to study their genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships, and to identify new waxy mutations. A simple sequence repeat (SSR) analysis revealed wide genetic diversity among the 200 waxy maize accessions. The maize accessions were clustered into three groups. We sequenced the waxy gene from the first to the 14th exon. Nucleotide variation analysis of 167 waxy maize and 14 flint maize lines revealed some nucleotide differences in the waxy gene among different waxy maize groups, and much narrower nucleotide diversity in waxy maize than in flint maize. In a phylogenetic analysis, waxy maize carrying the same mutation allele clustered together, and waxy maize carrying different mutation alleles distributed in different groups; waxy maize was intermixed with flint maize in each branch, and wx-D7 waxy maize separated significantly from waxy maize lines carrying wx-D10, wx-124 and wx-hAT mutant alleles. The wx-hAT was a new waxy mutation identified in this study. It consisted of a 2286-bp transposon inserted into the middle of exon three of the waxy gene. A PCR marker specific for the wx-hAT allele was developed. These results will be useful for the utilization and preservation of the waxy maize germplasm, and the PCR marker has potential uses in waxy maize breeding programs.

Southern leaf blight (SLB) and northern leaf blight (NLB) are the two major foliar diseases limiting maize production worldwide. Upon previous study with the nested association mapping (NAM) population, which consist of 5,000 recombinant inbred lines from 25 parents crossed with B73, we expanded the phenotyping environments from the United States (US) to China, and increased the marker densities from 1106 to 7386 SNPs for linkage mapping, and from 1.6 to 28.5 million markers for association mapping. We identified 49 SLB and 48 NLB resistance-related unique QTLs in linkage mapping, and multiple loci in association mapping with candidate genes involved in known plant disease-resistance pathways. Furthermore, an independent natural population with 282 diversified inbred lines were sequenced for four candidate genes selected based on their biological functions. Three of them demonstrated significant associations with disease resistance. These findings provided valuable resources for further implementations to develop varieties with superior resistance for NLB and SLB.

Carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CR-KP) posts significant public health challenge worldwide. The aim of this study is to assess clinical characteristics and molecular epidemiology of CR-KP infections with Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) in Central China. A total of 71 CR-KP isolates were recovered in a teaching hospital from October 2014 to December 2015. Among all CR-KP isolates, 73.2% (52) produced K. pneumoniae carbapenemases-2 (KPC-2). Eighteen ST types were identified by MLST, among these ST types, forty-seven isolates belonged to ST11 type, which was the predominant outbreak strain in China, and most ST11 isolates produced KPC-2. Eleven mass spectrometry (MS) types were identified by MALDI-TOF MS analysis, 53.5% isolates were MS4 and MS6, which matched with ST11 in MLST analysis. CR-KP infection was associated with increased medical cost and longer hospitalization. Therefore, we found that KPC-2-producing ST11 (MS4 and MS6) CR-KP isolates were the predominant clone identified by MLST and MALDI-TOF, and CR-KP infection was associated with increased hospital costs and longer hospitalization.

Three meteorological parameters, including one parameter representing water conditions (i.e., precipitation) and two parameters representing energy conditions (i.e., net radiation and air temperature), were used to make an in-depth analysis of the response of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) dynamics to climate change in Lake Baiyangdian, a shallow lake located in Xiong’an New Area (XNA), a future metropolitan in North China. The results showed that the vegetation coverage of the entire area remained at a medium level with average NDVI being 0.46 during 2000–2015. At a yearly scale, water was the key factor controlling the reed growth in Lake Baiyangdian. NDVI variations in each season had different water/energy driving factors. In spring, summer and autumn, vegetation growth was mainly affected by net radiation, air temperature and air temperature, respectively. Time-lags between NDVI and the meteorological parameters varied from parameters and seasons. Taken together, this research broadened our cognition about response characteristics of NDVI dynamics to water and energy variations through adding an important meteorological parameter (i.e., net radiation). With the rapid construction of XNA, it could be helpful for accurately understanding impacts of climate change on vegetation growth and be beneficial for effective ecosystem management in water shortage areas.

The study aims to develop new birth weight prediction models for different gestational age stages using 2-dimensional (2D) ultrasound measurements in a Chinese population. 2D ultrasound was examined in pregnant women with normal singleton within 3 days prior to delivery (28–42 weeks’ gestation). A total of 19,310 fetuses were included in the study and randomly split into the training group and the validation group. Gestational age was divided into five stages: 28–30, 31–33, 34–36, 37–39 and 40–42 weeks. Multiple linear regression (MLR), fractional polynomial regression (FPR) and volume-based model (VM) were used to develop birth weight prediction model. New staged prediction models (VM for 28–36 weeks, MLR for 37–39 weeks, and FPR for 40–42 weeks) provided lower systematic errors and random errors than previously published models for each gestational age stage in the training group. The similar results were observed in the validation group. Compared to the previously published models, new staged models had the lowest aggregate systematic error (0.31%) and at least a 19.35% decrease; at least a 4.67% decrease for the root-mean-square error (RMSE). The prediction rates within 5% and 10% of birth weight for new staged models were higher than those for previously published models, which were 54.47% and 85.10%, respectively. New staged birth weight prediction models could improve the accuracy of birth weight estimation for different gestational age stages in a Chinese population.

The Western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH) regulates East Asian climate in summer. Anomalous WNPSH causes floods, droughts and heat waves in China, Japan and Korea. The potential change of the WNPSH under global warming is concerned by Asian people, but whether the WNPSH would be enhanced or weakened remains inconclusive. Based on the multi-model climate change projection from the 5th phase of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5), we show evidences that the WNPSH tends to weaken and retreat eastward in the mid-troposphere in response to global warming, accompanied by an eastward expansion of East Asian rain belt along the northwestern flank of WNPSH. Weakened meridional temperature gradient on the northern flank of WNPSH and the associated thermal wind account for the weakened WNPSH in the mid troposphere. We recommend the WNPSH be measured by eddy geopotential height (He) instead of traditionally used geopotential height, especially in climate change studies.

In this study, we discover unexpectedly that simple reaction of AgNO3 with oleic acid (OA) without solvent and surfactant could generate alkyl free radical which can catalyze double-bond polymerization of OA to form 1D polymeric oleic acid (POA) chain. In certain conditions, these POA chains circumvolute tightly each other to form microspheres and micro-plates in which monodisperse 4-5 nm Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were absorbed. It has been revealed that alkyl free radical generated during the redox reaction of carboxyl group of OA with Ag+ at relative low temperature. Then, the alkyl free radical catalyzed the double-bond polymerization of OA when the reaction temperature was further increased. Different from commonly-seen hydrophobic nanoparticles prepared in oleic acid-based microemulsion system, the nanocomposites cannot dispersed in n-hexane and could dispersed in ethanol and THF. The unusual dispersion behavior has been explained in terms of their structure and polarity of POA chain. The method combines the nucleation of Ag nanoparticles and the polymerization of monomer in a facile one-pot reaction, which provides a novel way for metal-polymer microsphere nanocomposite with low-cost, easy-operation and high-yield.
