Abstract Through experimental tests, this paper investigated the effectiveness of microwave healing on asphalt mixtures containing iron powder (IP) filler to improve durability and enhance mechanical properties. The moisture sensitivity of the asphalt mixes with varying iron powder filler contents was measured using the modified Lottman test. For evaluating the asphalt mixture healing ability, two complementary methods were used: the fatigue-based method, derived from the ability of microwave healing of asphalt mixture samples damaged up to 50% level of indirect tensile fatigue (ITF), and the fracture-based method, obtained from the strength recovery rate of broken semi-circular samples by applying consecutive breaking-healing cycles. The results showed that the greater the quantity of iron powder filler in the asphalt sample, the greater the sample’s indirect tensile strength and TSR ratio, indicating that IP had a positive effect on moisture sensitivity. The findings also indicated that utilizing iron powder as a filler positively strengthens the fatigue life, increases the toughness, and increases the microwave healing indices (both fatigue and failure approaches). Finally, according to the study results, substituting 70% iron powder as the filler is the most suitable option for improving the mechanical and self-healing characteristics of asphalt mixes.

Abstract Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological condition that is connected with a decline in a person's memory as well as their cognitive ability. One of the key topics of AD research has been the exploration of metabolic causes. We investigated the effects of treadmill exercise and intranasal insulin on learning and memory impairment and the expression of IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4 in hypothalamus. The animals were put into 9 groups at random. In this study, we examined the impact of insulin on spatial memory in male Wistar rats and analyzed the effects of a 4-week pretreatment of moderate treadmill exercise and insulin on the mechanisms of improved hypothalamic glucose metabolism through changes in gene and protein expression of IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4. We discovered that rat given Aβ25–35 had impaired spatial learning and memory, which was accompanied by higher levels of Aβ plaque burden in the hippocampus and lower levels of IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4 mRNA and protein expression in the hypothalamus. Additionally, the administration of exercise training and intranasal insulin results in the enhancement of spatial learning and memory impairments, the reduction of plaque burden in the hippocampus, and the enhancement of the expression of IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4 in the hypothalamus of rats that were treated with Aβ25–35. Our results show that the improvement of learning and spatial memory due to the improvement of metabolism and upregulation of the IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4 pathways can be affected by pretreatment exercise and intranasal insulin.

Abstract The calibration of reservoir models using production data can enhance the reliability of predictions. However, history matching often leads to only a few matched models, and the original geological interpretation is not always preserved. Therefore, there is a need for stochastic methodologies for history matching. The Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) is a well-known Monte Carlo method that updates reservoir models in real time. When new production data becomes available, the ensemble of models is updated accordingly. The initial ensemble is created using the prior model, and the posterior probability function is sampled through a series of updates. In this study, EnKF was employed to evaluate the uncertainty of production forecasts for a specific development plan and to match historical data to a real field reservoir model. This study represents the first attempt to combine EnKF with an integrated model that includes a genuine oil reservoir, actual production wells, a surface choke, a surface pipeline, a separator, and a PID pressure controller. The research optimized a real integrated production system, considering the constraint that there should be no slug flow at the inlet of the separator. The objective function was to maximize the net present value (NPV). Geological data was used to model uncertainty using Sequential Gaussian Simulation. Porosity scenarios were generated, and conditioning the porosity to well data yielded improved results. Ensembles were employed to balance accuracy and efficiency, demonstrating a reduction in porosity uncertainty due to production data. This study revealed that utilizing a PID pressure controller for the production separator can enhance oil production by 59% over 20 years, resulting in the generation of 2.97 million barrels of surplus oil in the field and significant economic gains.

Abstract PDC drill bits are an important part of drilling engineering, but improper selection or design can lead to decreased performance and increased costs. Then, accurate modeling of rock-bit interaction for Oil/gas well drilling is critical. Although several mathematical models are presented for this purpose, they have not been able to present a comprehensive model for the rock-bit interaction. In-situ stresses in real drilling conditions affect the force required for rock failure. However, the models proposed so far either have not considered the effects of in-situ stresses or have assumed that the rock failure angle in the downhole conditions is equal to the one calculated in the atmospheric conditions. In this work, after reviewing the background of studies conducted on the rock and bit interaction, with an analytical method, stresses applied to the bottom hole element are examined, including stresses resulting from bit and in-situ stresses. Based on the principle of superposition, the total stress imposed on the bottom hole element is calculated to determine the angle and force of rock cutting. Finally, a novel mathematical model of rock-bit interaction in vertical and deviated oil/gas wells drilling by Considering In-Situ Stresses is presented. Also, the study compares the current model to the Nishimatsu and Xin Ling models using data from a southwest field in Iran. The results show that the simplifying assumption made by previous models leads to a significant underestimation of the failure angle and the amount of force required to the rock failure, with reductions of up to 21% and 48%, respectively, in the case of a vertical well. In an inclined well, the current model predicts cutting force at about 0.14 of that predicted by the previous model.

Abstract Human studies have established that short periods of dark adaptation can induce outer retinal thinning and various band intensity changes that can be detected with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Similar findings were observed in mice, including a positive correlation between the degree of outer retinal changes and dark adaptation duration. We decided to assess potential retinal structural changes following prolonged dark adaptation in humans. 40 healthy subjects without any ocular diseases participated in this study. For each subject, one eye was covered for dark adaptation for four hours, and the other eye was left uncovered as a control. Before and after the dark adaptation period, both eyes were assessed with OCT. Using the Heidelberg Spectralis system, basic statistical functions, and qualitative and quantitative analysis, we were able to compare retinal layer thicknesses and band intensities between covered (dark adapted) versus uncovered (control) eyes. Prolonged dark adaptation did not induce any significant thickness, volume, or intensity changes in the outer retina or in the inner or overall retina. These observations thus alter our current understanding of the mechanisms underlying dark adaptation’s neuroprotective effects in preventing blindness and require further study.

Abstract The monitoring of leakage current (LC) and voltage characteristics in transmission line insulators is regarded as a good technique for anticipating the physical state of in-service insulators. In the current work, the temporal and frequency characteristics of LC and voltage under various situations were derived for assessing the health condition of porcelain, glass, and silicone rubber insulators. The contamination severity indicated by soluble deposit density, wetting level (Wt), non-soluble deposit density, and uneven pollution distribution (Pu/PL) were chosen as the environmental factors that impact the insulators. Six criteria were utilized to evaluate the physical state of the insulators, with four of those derived from the LC signal in the time domain, namely, the LC signal peak (C1), the phase shift between applied voltage and LC (C2), the LC signal slope between two consecutive peaks (C3), and the crest factor (C4). The remaining two indices, namely, the total harmonics distribution (C5) and the harmonics ratio indicator (C6), were obtained from the frequency domain of the LC signal. In addition, the flashover voltage index (C7) was also employed. The LC indicators were then classified based on the laboratory test results to reflect the physical state of the insulators. The findings revealed that the proposed indicators had an important impact in determining the physical state of the insulators. Furthermore, a confusion matrix was created for the test and prediction data using the suggested indicators to determine the effectiveness of each indicator.

Abstract The real-world use of triptans in the treatment of migraine is disappointing. Only 12% of the Danish migraine population purchased a triptan between 2014 and 2019, and only 43% repurchased a triptan after first prescription. The aim of the present study was to assess whether physicians and patients adhere to the therapeutic guideline on acute migraine treatment. We interviewed 299 triptan experienced participants with migraine and 101 triptan naïve participants with migraine from the Danish Migraine Population Cohort, using a semi-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistical analyses were used to study the association with triptan use and the assessed factors. Among triptan naïve participants with migraine, 64% had consulted their general practitioner about their migraine, of whom only 23% received information about the possibility of triptan treatment. Among triptan experienced participants, 77% had only tried one type of triptan. Only 12% could recall they had been informed by their general practitioner to try each triptan three times before giving up. Twenty percent were informed to try three different triptans in total, if the first did not work. In disagreement with the guideline, participants who reported a low pain reduction by a triptan had only tried one type of triptan. Our study shows a low adherence to therapeutic guideline for the attack treatment of migraine. There is a need for better education of general practitioners regarding treatment of migraine. Future campaigns should aim to inform both the public and the general practitioner about antimigraine treatments.

High efficiency polymer:fullerene photovoltaic device layers self-assemble with hierarchical features from ångströms to 100's of nanometers. The feature size, shape, composition, orientation, and order all contribute to device efficiency and are simultaneously difficult to study due to poor contrast between carbon based materials. This study seeks to increase device efficiency and simplify morphology measurements by replacing the typical fullerene acceptor with endohedral fullerene Lu3N@PC80BEH. The metal atoms give excellent scattering contrast for electron beam and x-ray experiments. Additionally, Lu3N@PC80BEH has a lower electron affinity than standard fullerenes, which can raise the open circuit voltage of photovoltaic devices. Electron microscopy techniques are used to produce a detailed account of morphology evolution in mixtures of Lu3N@PC80BEH with the record breaking donor polymer, PTB7 and coated using solvent mixtures. We demonstrate that common solvent additives like 1,8-diiodooctane or chloronapthalene do not improve the morphology of endohedral fullerene devices as expected. The poor device performance is attributed to the lack of mutual miscibility between this particular polymer:fullerene combination and to co-crystallization of Lu3N@PC80BEH with 1,8-diiodooctane. This negative result explains why solvent additives mixtures are not necessarily a morphology cure-all.

The anthracycline doxorubicin (Dox) is widely used in oncology, but it may cause a cardiomyopathy with bleak prognosis that cannot be effectively prevented. The secretome of human amniotic fluid-derived stem cells (hAFS) has previously been demonstrated to significantly reduce ischemic cardiac damage. Here it is shown that, following hypoxic preconditioning, hAFS conditioned medium (hAFS-CM) antagonizes senescence and apoptosis of cardiomyocytes and cardiac progenitor cells, two major features of Dox cardiotoxicity. Mechanistic studies with mouse neonatal ventricular cardiomyocytes (mNVCM) reveal that hAFS-CM inhibition of Dox-elicited senescence and apoptosis is associated with decreased DNA damage, nuclear translocation of NF-kB, and upregulation of the NF-kB controlled genes, Il6 and Cxcl1, promoting mNVCM survival. Furthermore, hAFS-CM induces expression of the efflux transporter, Abcb1b, and Dox extrusion from mNVCM. The PI3K/Akt signaling cascade, upstream of NF-kB, is potently activated by hAFS-CM and pre-treatment with a PI3K inhibitor abrogates NF-kB accumulation into the nucleus, modulation of Il6, Cxcl1 and Abcb1b, and prevention of Dox-initiated senescence and apoptosis in response to hAFS-CM. These results support the concept that hAFS are a valuable source of cardioprotective factors and lay the foundations for the development of a stem cell-based paracrine treatment of chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity.
