Abstract The aim of this research is to present correction factors for the punching shear formulas of ACI-318 and EC2 design codes to adopt the punching capacity of post tensioned ultra-high-performance concrete (PT-UHPC) flat slabs. To achieve that goal, the results of previously tested PT-UHPC flat slabs were used to validate the developed finite element method (FEM) model in terms of punching shear capacity. Then, a parametric study was conducted using the validated FEM to generate two databases, each database included concrete compressive strength, strands layout, shear reinforcement capacity and the aspect ratio of the column besides the correction factor (the ratio between the FEM punching capacity and the design code punching capacity). The first considered design code in the first database was ACI-318 and in the second database was EC2. Finally, there different “Machine Learning” (ML) techniques manly “Genetic programming” (GP), “Artificial Neural Network” (ANN) and “Evolutionary Polynomial Regression” (EPR) were applied on the two generated databases to predict the correction factors as functions of the considered parameters. The results of the study indicated that all the developed (ML) models showed almost the same level of accuracy in terms of the punching ultimate load (about 96%) and the ACI-318 correction factor depends mainly on the concrete compressive strength and aspect ratio of the column, while the EC2 correction factor depends mainly on the concrete compressive strength and the shear reinforcement capacity.

Abstract Coronavirus (COVID-19) was a pandemic disease that was affecting our medical and surgical daily practice badly. The surgical management of acute appendicitis was the gold standard, but new studies suggest the safety of antibiotic treatment alone. Non-operative treatment for simple acute appendicitis (NOTA) avoids surgery, the risks of general anesthesia, and long hospital stays. It also decreases the risk of exposure to coronavirus. We aimed to study the cost-effectiveness and outcome of NOTA during the COVID-19 pandemic and compared it to single-incision pediatric endo-surgery appendectomy (SIPESA). A prospective cohort study for NOTA of patients from 6 to 12 years old in the COVID-19 pandemic period from April 1st, 2020, to April 30th, 2021, patients were divided into two groups: Group S was managed by SIPESA, and Group N was managed by NOTA. Family education and assurance with detailed explanation were done for early detection of any complications, and we continue monitoring the patients until their complete recovery. Group S had 24 cases (40%), mean age 9.3 years. Group N had 36 cases (60%), mean age 9.1 years. Six cases (17%) in group N were converted to surgical management in the first 6 months of the study. The mean cost dropped from $2736/day to $400/day. The mean psychological stress for the children improved from 4.4 in April to 2 in September. The mean follow-up was 3.5 months. NOTA is a feasible, cost-effective approach, and we recommend it, as we have learned this lesson during the COVID-19 pandemic days.

Abstract Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) have become the most efficient, clean and cost-effective electrochemical energy conversion devices in recent years. While significant progress has been made in developing proton conducting electrolyte materials, mechanical strength and durability still need to be improved for efficient applications. We report that adding 5 mol% Zn to the Y-doped barium cerate-zirconate perovskite electrolyte material can significantly improve the sintering properties, mechanical strength, durability and performance. Using same proton conducting material in anodes, electrolytes and cathodes to make a strong structural backbone shows clear advantages in mechanical strength over other arrangements with different materials. Rietveld analysis of the X-ray and neutron diffraction data of BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.15Zn0.05O3−δ (BCZYZn05) revealed a pure orthorhombic structure belonging to the Pbnm space group. Structural and electrochemical analyses indicate highly dense and high proton conductivity at intermediate temperature (400–700 °C). The anode-supported single cell, NiO-BCZYZn05|BCZYZn05|BSCF-BCZYZn05, demonstrates a peak power density of 872 mW cm−2 at 700 °C which is one of the highest power density in an all-protonic solid oxide fuel cell. This observation represents an important step towards commercially viable SOFC technology.

Ulcerative keratitis is a common disease in horses which may cause blindness. To prevent secondary bacterial and fungal infections and promote quick re-growth of the epithelial layer, different treatment approaches have been employed. This study aimed to examine the effects of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) gel on the healing process of experimentally induced corneal ulcers in donkeys. Nine healthy adult donkeys were used for the study. The donkeys were divided into two groups: the control group, where no medication was applied to the corneal ulcer, and the A-PRF gel group, where A-PRF gel was applied once a day on specific days after ulcer induction. The healing process was evaluated through various examinations and analyses. The results demonstrated that the A-PRF gel group showed significant improvement in the corneal ulcer area, with epithelial and stromal regeneration. At day 35, about 60% of the A-PRF group showed negative fluorescein uptake. Additionally, fewer complications were observed during the healing process compared to the control group. In conclusion, A-PRF gel is an important and safe therapeutic option for controlling ocular surface infection and promoting corneal healing. We recommend using A-PRF gel as an alternative approach, avoiding eyelid suturing, and minimizing corneal irritation., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Gastrointestinal tract (gut) inflammation increases stress and threat-coping behaviors, which are associated with altered activity in fear-related neural circuits, such as the basolateral amygdala and hippocampus. It remains to be determined whether inflammation from the gut affects neural activity by altering dendritic spines. We hypothesized that acute inflammation alters dendritic spines in a brain region-specific manner. Here we show that acute gut inflammation (colitis) evoked by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) did not affect the overall spine density in the CA1 region of hippocampus, but increased the relative proportion of immature spines to mature spines on basal dendrites of pyramidal neurons. In contrast, in animals with colitis, no changes in spine density or composition on dendrites of pyramidal cells was observed in the basolateral amygdala. Rather, we observed decreased spine density on dendrites of stellate neurons, but not the relative proportions of mature vs immature spines. We used cFos expression evoked by the forced swim task as a measure of neural activity during stress and found no effect of DSS on the density of cFos immunoreactive neurons in basolateral amygdala. In contrast, fewer CA1 neurons expressed cFos in mice with colitis, relative to controls. Furthermore, CA1 cFos expression negatively correlated with active stress-coping in the swim task and was negatively correlated with gut inflammation. These data reveal that the effects of acute gut inflammation on synaptic remodeling depend on brain region, neuronal phenotype, and dendrite location. In the hippocampus, a shift to immature spines and hypoactivity are more strongly related to colitis-evoked behavioral changes than is remodeling in basolateral amygdala., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

In dogs, splenectomy is mandatory as an emergency following splenic rupture with resultant hemoperitoneum and hypotensive shock. The present work aimed to evaluate the Doppler ultrasonographic parameters of brachial and femoral veins in splenectomized dogs and to investigate the effect of splenectomy on the coagulation and lipid profiles. A total number of 9 dogs underwent clinical, abdominal ultrasonographic and laboratory examinations prior to the surgical operation and kept for 60-day observation period post-splenectomy. Follow-up ultrasonography revealed no serious complications post-splenectomy. Both brachial and femoral veins were imaged medial to their corresponding arteries. Doppler ultrasonographic parameters of both veins showed no significant changes throughout the study period (P > 0.05). Haematological analysis revealed development of anemia, leukocytosis, and thrombocytosis in dogs post-splenectomy. Coagulation profile exhibited no significant variations in prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin times (P > 0.05). In comparison with their baseline values, the mean concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and triglycerides were significantly increased 30-day post-splenectomy. In conclusion, it may seem that open splenectomy has no influence on the Doppler ultrasonographic indices of brachial and femoral veins with no evidence of deep vein thrombosis in dogs. However, persistent leukocytosis and thrombocytosis, as well as altered lipid profile may increase the risk of vascular complications with the long run. Therefore, a further long-term study may be required.
