Abstract In this brief report, we present laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) evidence of deuterium (D) production in a 3:1 urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) polymer doped with resonant gold nanorods, induced by intense, 40 fs laser pulses. The in situ recorded LIBS spectra revealed that the D/(2D + H) increased to 4–8% in the polymer samples in selected events. The extent of transmutation was found to linearly increase with the laser pulse energy (intensity) between 2 and 25 mJ (up to 3 × 1017W/cm2). The observed effect is attributed only to the field enhancing effects due to excited localized surface plasmons on the gold nanoparticles.

Abstract We present a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope investigation of a prochiral thiophene-based molecule that self-assembles forming islands with different domains on the Au(111) surface. In the domains, two different conformations of the single molecule are observed, depending on a slight rotation of two adjacent bromothiophene groups. Using voltage pulses from the tip, single molecules can be switched between the two conformations. The electronic states have been measured with scanning tunneling spectroscopy, showing that the electronic resonances are mainly localized at the same positions in both conformations. Density-functional theory calculations support the experimental results. Furthermore, we observe that on Ag(111), only one configuration is present and therefore the switching effect is suppressed.

Abstract In high energy heavy-ion collisions, the high speed valence charges will produce intense electromagnetic fields within the resulting quark-gluon plasma. Utilizing the AMPT model, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the magnetic field distribution generated from non-central collisions between $$\mathrm{Au+Au}$$ Au + Au nuclei at $$\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}={200}\;{\text{GeV}}$$ s NN = 200 GeV . The initial geometric parameters of the collision and the electric conductivity of the quark-gluon plasma have a dominant influence on the evolution of the magnetic field, while the plasma diffusion and the CME effect have a lesser impact and only slightly involve the original magnetic field by inducing new magnetic fields. This finding suggests that the dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma can be roughly decoupled from the effect of the electromagnetic field.

Abstract Glucocorticoids (GC) like dexamethasone (Dex) are potent anti-inflammatory agents with diverse cellular functions including the potentiation of the activity of AU-rich elements (AREs). AREs are cis-acting instability sequence elements located in the 3′UTRs of many inflammatory mediator mRNAs. Here, available RNA-seq data were used to investigate the effect of GCs on the ARE-mRNA-transcriptome. At a global scale, ARE-mRNAs had a tendency to be downregulated after GC-treatment of the A549 lung cancer cell-line, but with notable cases of upregulation. mRNA stability experiments indicated that not only the downregulated, but also the upregulated ARE-mRNAs are destabilized by Dex-treatment. Several of the most upregulated ARE-mRNAs code for anti-inflammatory mediators including the established GC targets DUSP1 and ZFP36; both code for proteins that target ARE-containing mRNAs for destruction. GCs are widely used in the treatment of COVID-19 patients; we show that ARE-mRNAs are more likely to regulate in opposite directions between Dex-treatment and SARS-CoV-2 infections compared to non-ARE mRNAs. The effect of GC treatment on ARE-mRNA abundance was also investigated in blood monocytes of COVID-19 patients. The results were heterogeneous; however, in agreement with in vitro observations, ZFP36 and DUSP1 were often amongst the most differentially expressed mRNAs. The results of this study propose a universal destabilization of ARE-mRNAs by GCs, but a diverse overall outcome in vitro likely due to induced transcription or due to the heterogeneity of COVID-19 patient’s responses in vivo.

Abstract The emergence of infectious diseases worldwide necessitates rapid and precise diagnostics. Using gold nanoshells in the PCR mix, we harnessed their unique photothermal properties in the near-infrared regime to attain efficient heating, reaching ideal photothermal PCR cycle temperature profile. Our photothermal PCR method expedited DNA amplification while retaining its detection sensitivity. Combining photothermal quantitative PCR with real-time fluorometry and non-invasive temperature measurement, we could amplify the target DNA within just 25 min, with a minimum detectable DNA amount of 50 picograms. This innovation in photothermal qPCR, leveraging the photothermal properties of gold nanoshells, will pave the way for immediate point-of-care diagnostics of nucleic acid biomarkers.

Abstract The development of approaches based on genetically modified cells is accompanied by a constant intensive search for new effective and safe delivery systems and the study of existing ones. Recently, we developed a new plasmonic nanoparticle layers-mediated optoporation system that can be proposed for precisely controlled, high-performance laser transfection compatible with broad types of cells and delivered objects of interest. The main goal of the present study is to demonstrate the broad possibilities and advantages of our system for optoporation of several mammalian cells, classified as "easy-to-transfect" cells, namely HeLa and CHO lines, and "hard-to-transfect" cells, namely A431 and RAW 264.7 cells. We show the efficient delivery of various sized cargo molecules: from small molecular dyes propidium iodide (PI) with molecular mass 700 Da, control plasmids (3–10 kb) to fluorophore-labeled dextranes with masses ranging from 10 kDa up to 100 kDa. The performance of optoporation was investigated for two types of laser sources, 800-nm continuous-wave laser, and 1064-nm ns pulsed laser. We provided a comparative study between our system and commercial agent Lipofectamine for transient transfection and stable transfection of HeLa cells with plasmids encoding fluorescent proteins. The quantitative data analysis using flow cytometry, Alamar blue viability assay, and direct fluorescence microscopy revealed higher optoporation efficacy for hard-to-transfect A431 cells and Raw 264.7 cells than lipofection efficacy. Finally, we demonstrated the optoporation performance at the single-cell level by successful delivering PI to the individual CHO cells with revealed high viability for at least 72 h post-irradiation.

Treating lung and prostate cancer cells is a major health problem that may be solved through the interactions of laser beams with nanoparticles. In the paper, Au-H 2 Ti 3 O 7 nanotubes (NTs) are proposed as a treatment agent and the interactions of different laser beams with the nanostructure are considered to solve the mentioned health problem. Also, the NTs are employed to treat the cancers in dark conditions. The results are motivating because Au-H 2 Ti 3 O 7 NPs do not affect healthy cells, while they strongly affect cancer cells, and the viability percentage of LNCap cells reaches 16% for incubation times of 48 h. Furthermore, treating LNCap cells using the irradiated Au-H 2 Ti 3 O 7 NTs by NIR beam at 808 nm has no cytotoxicity, while cytotoxicity of 92% is obtained using an irradiation laser beam at 532 nm. Also, applying the laser beam at 635 nm to the NTs leads to a cytotoxicity of ∼53% in lung cancer (A549 cells). In total, the Au-H 2 Ti 3 O 7 NTs have a selective effect on cancer cells and greatly reduce the viability in the given dark and irradiation conditions, leading to the introduction of them as a promising agent for the non-invasive treatment of prostate cancer and a moderate candidate for lung cancer therapy., (© 2024. Abstract Herein, a novel Ag NP substrate doped with Au nanobipyramids was designed and fabricated via a convenient procedure of galvanic reaction for the identification and classification of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) in oral fluids in combination with surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The substrate was shown to have a three-dimensional nanostructure, high SERS activity, and good stability. In combination with SERS, the Ag NP substrate doped with Au nanobipyramids was able to detect ultra-low traces of ATS, including amphetamine, methylamphetamine (MA), 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and 3,4-methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA) in oral fluid with limit of detection (LOD) and limit of determination quantitation (LOQ) as low as 10–9 mg/mL, which is much better than the current spectroscopic techniques. The equations between concentration and peaks intensity for quantitative analysis displied good doublelogarithmic linear relations and reliability figures of merit at nanogram concentration level in compartion with GC–MS method. The approach can be broadly applied to the ultra-low trace detection of ATS in oral fluid and would be particularly useful for the analyses of nitrogenous organic compounds.

Abstract Modern smart coating systems are increasingly exploiting functional materials which combine multiple features including rheology, electromagnetic properties and nanotechnological capabilities and provide a range of advantages in diverse operations including medical, energy and transport designs (aerospace, marine, automotive). The simulation of the industrial synthesis of these multi-faceted coatings (including stagnation flow deposition processes) requires advanced mathematical models which can address multiple effects simultaneously. Inspired by these requests, this study investigates the interconnected magnetohydrodynamic non-Newtonian movement and thermal transfer in the Hiemenz plane's stagnation flow. Additionally, it explores the application of a transverse static magnetic field to a ternary hybrid nanofluid coating through theoretical and numerical analysis. The base fluid (polymeric) considered is engine-oil (EO) doped with graphene $$\left(GO\right)$$ G O , gold $$\left(Au\right)$$ A u and Cobalt oxide $$\left(C{o}_{3}{O}_{4}\right)$$ C o 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The model includes the integration of non-linear radiation, heat source, convective wall heating, and magnetic induction effects. For non-Newtonian characteristics, the Williamson model is utilized, while the Rosseland diffusion flux model is used for radiative transfer. Additionally, a non-Fourier Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model is utilized to include thermal relaxation effects. The governing partial differential conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and magnetic induction are rendered into a system of coupled self-similar and non-linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with boundary restrictions using appropriate scaling transformations. The dimensionless boundary value problem that arises is solved using the bvp4c built-in function in MATLAB software, which employs the fourth-order Runge–Kutta (RK-4) method. An extensive examination is conducted to evaluate the impact of essential control parameters on the velocity $$f{^{\prime}}\left(\zeta \right)$$ f ′ ζ , induced magnetic field stream function gradient $$g{^{\prime}}\left(\zeta \right)$$ g ′ ζ and temperature $$\theta \left(\zeta \right)$$ θ ζ is conducted. The relative performance of ternary, hybrid binary and unitary nanofluids for all transport characteristics is evaluated. The inclusion of verification of the MATLAB solutions with prior studies is incorporated. Fluid velocity is observed to be minimized for the ternary $$\mathrm{GO}$$ GO – $$\mathrm{Au}$$ Au – $${\mathrm{Co}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$$ Co 3 O 4 nanofluid whereas the velocity is maximized for the unitary cobalt oxide $$\left({\mathrm{Co}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}\right)$$ Co 3 O 4 nanofluid with increasing magnetic parameter ( $$\beta ).$$ β ) . Temperatures are elevated with increment in thermal radiation parameter (Rd). Streamlines are strongly modified in local regions with greater viscoelasticity i.e. higher Weissenberg number $$(We)$$ ( W e ) . Dimensionless skin friction is significantly greater for the ternary hybrid $$GO$$ GO – $$Au$$ Au – $$C{o}_{3}{O}_{4}/EO$$ C o 3 O 4 / E O nanofluid compared with binary hybrid or unitary nanofluid cases.

Nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical applications and cancer treatments due to their minute scale, multi-function, and long retention time. Among the various nanoparticles, the unique optical property derived from the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic nanoparticles is a primary reason that metallic nanoparticles are researched and applied. Copper and Iron nanoparticles have the potential to generate hydroxyl radicals in excess H2O2 via Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. On the other hand, gold nanoparticles equipped with a photosensitizer can transfer the energy of photons to chemical energy and enhance the production of singlet oxygen, which is suitable for cancer treatment. With the actions of these two reactive oxygen species in the tumor microenvironment, cell apoptosis can further be induced. In this work, we first synthesized dual metal nanoparticles with poly[styrene-alt-(maleic acid, sodium salt)(Cu ferrite oxide-polymer) by a simple one-step hydrothermal reduction reaction. Then, gold(III) was reduced and doped into the structure, which formed a triple metal structure, Au-doped Cu ferrite nanoparticles (Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer NPs). The metal ratio of the product could be controlled by manipulating the Fe/Cu ratio of reactants and the sequence of addition of reactants. The core-shell structure was verified by transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen generation ability of Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer was proved. The chemodynamic and photodynamic effect was measured, and the in vitro ROS generation was observed. Furthermore, the behavior of endocytosis by cancer cells could be controlled by the magnetic field. The result indicated that Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer core-shell nanoreactor is a potential agent for chemodynamic/photodynamic synergetic therapy.

Abstract Networks of random-assembled gold clusters produced in the gas phase show resistive switching (RS) activity at room temperature and they are suitable for the fabrication of devices for neuromorphic data processing and classification. Fully connected cluster-assembled nanostructured Au films are characterized by a granular structure rich of interfaces, grain boundaries and crystalline defects. Here we report a systematic characterization of the electroforming process of the cluster-assembled films demonstrating how this process affects the interplay between the nano- and mesoscale film structure and the neuromorphic characteristics of the resistive switching activity. The understanding and the control of the influence of the resistive switching forming process on the organization of specific structures at different scales of the cluster-assembled films, provide the possibility to engineer random-assembled neuromorphic architectures for data processing task.

Abstract A profoundly touchy voltammetric sensor for detection of nicotine (NIC) in urine and tobacco specimens has been developed in light of the boosted electrochemical response of NIC at gold and chitosan nanocomposite modified carbon paste electrode (ACMCPE). Material characterization techniques Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM & EDX) were utilized to describe the ACMCPE surface material. The impedance spectroscopy technique (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were employed to explore the electrochemical sensing of NIC at ACMCPE. The created sensor exhibits an exceptional electrochemical sensitivity to NIC in a universal Britton–Robinson (B-R) buffer solution with a pH range of 2.0 to 8.0. The sensor shows a linear response over NIC concentration ranges of 4.0–320.0 µM, with the detection limit (LOD) of 7.6 µM. The prepared sensor has been shown to be exceptionally viable in detecting NIC with amazing selectivity and reproducibility. We suggest it as a trustworthy and useful electrochemical sensor for NIC location.

Abstract Recent studies have reported the significant role of Au-bearing nanoparticles in the formation of hydrothermal gold deposits. Despite the ever-increasing understanding of the genesis and stability of Au-bearing nanoparticles, it is still unknown how they behave when exposed to hydrothermal fluids. Here, we study the nanostructural evolution of Au–Ag nanoparticles hosted within Co-rich diarsenides and sulfarsenides of a natural hydrothermal deposit. We use high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to provide a singular glimpse of the complete melting sequence of Au–Ag nanoparticles exposed to the hydrothermal fluid during coupled dissolution–precipitation reactions of their host minerals. The interaction of Au–Ag nanoparticles with hydrothermal fluids at temperatures (400–500 ºC) common to most hydrothermal gold deposits may promote melting and generation of Au–Ag nanomelts. This process has important implications in noble metal remobilization and accumulation during the formation of these deposits.

Abstract Nano-cryosurgery is one of the effective ways to treat cancerous cells with minimum harm to healthy adjacent cells. Clinical experimental research consumes time and cost. Thus, developing a mathematical simulation model is useful for time and cost-saving, especially in designing the experiment. Investigating the Casson nanofluid's unsteady flow in an artery with the convective effect is the goal of the current investigation. The nanofluid is considered to flow in the blood arteries. Therefore, the slip velocity effect is concerned. Blood is a base fluid with gold (Au) nanoparticles dispersed in the base fluid. The resultant governing equations are solved by utilising the Laplace transform regarding the time and the finite Hankel transform regarding the radial coordinate. The resulting analytical answers for velocity and temperature are then displayed and visually described. It is found that the temperature enhancement occurred by arising nanoparticles volume fraction and time parameter. The blood velocity increases as the slip velocity, time parameter, thermal Grashof number, and nanoparticles volume fraction increase. Whereas the velocity decreases with the Casson parameter. Thus, by adding Au nanoparticles, the tissue thermal conductivity enhanced which has the consequence of freezing the tissue in nano-cryosurgery treatment significantly.

Abstract Entropy creation by a blood-hybrid nanofluid flow with gold-tantalum nanoparticles in a tilted cylindrical artery with composite stenosis under the influence of Joule heating, body acceleration, and thermal radiation is the focus of this research. Using the Sisko fluid model, the non-Newtonian behaviour of blood is investigated. The finite difference (FD) approach is used to solve the equations of motion and entropy for a system subject to certain constraints. The optimal heat transfer rate with respect to radiation, Hartmann number, and nanoparticle volume fraction is calculated using a response surface technique and sensitivity analysis. The impacts of significant parameters such as Hartmann number, angle parameter, nanoparticle volume fraction, body acceleration amplitude, radiation, and Reynolds number on the velocity, temperature, entropy generation, flow rate, shear stress of wall, and heat transfer rate are exhibited via the graphs and tables. Present results disclose that the flow rate profile increase by improving the Womersley number and the opposite nature is noticed in nanoparticle volume fraction. The total entropy generation reduces by improving radiation. The Hartmann number expose a positive sensitivity for all level of nanoparticle volume fraction. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the radiation and nanoparticle volume fraction showed a negative sensitivity for all magnetic field levels. It is seen that the presence of hybrid nanoparticles in the bloodstream leads to a more substantial reduction in the axial velocity of blood compared to Sisko blood. An increase in the volume fraction results in a noticeable decrease in the volumetric flow rate in the axial direction, while higher values of infinite shear rate viscosity lead to a significant reduction in the magnitude of the blood flow pattern. The blood temperature exhibits a linear increase with respect to the volume fraction of hybrid nanoparticles. Specifically, utilizing a hybrid nanofluid with a volume fraction of 3% leads to a 2.01316% higher temperature compared to the base fluid (blood). Similarly, a 5% volume fraction corresponds to a temperature increase of 3.45093%.

Abstract Bimetallic decoration of semiconductor electrodes typically improves catalytic and sensing performances because of a well-claimed synergistic effect. A microscopic and quantitative investigation of such an effect on energy bands of semiconductor can be really useful for further exploitation. Au, Pd and Au@Pd (core@shell) nanoparticles (10–20 nm in size) were synthesized through chemical reduction method and characterized with scanning and transmission microscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Mott–Schottky analysis. The nanoparticles have been used to decorate Ni-based nanostructured electrodes with the aim to quantitatively investigate the effect of decoration with mono or bimetallic nanoparticles. Decorated electrodes show higher redox currents than bare ones and a shift in redox peaks (up to 0.3 V), which can be ascribed to a more efficient electron transport and improved catalytic properties. These effects were satisfactorily modeled (COMSOL) employing a nano Schottky junction at the nanoparticle–semiconductor interface, pointing out large energy band bending (up to 0.4 eV), space charge region and local electric field (up to $${10}^{8}\mathrm{ V }{\mathrm{m}}^{-1}$$ 10 8 V m - 1 ) in bimetallic decoration. Sensing test of glucose and H2O2 by decorated Ni oxide electrodes were performed to consolidate our model. The presence of bimetallic nanoparticles enhances enormously the electrochemical performances of the material in terms of sensitivity, catalytic activity, and electrical transport. The modification of energy band diagram in semiconductor is analyzed and discussed also in terms of electron transfer during redox reactions.

Abstract Using low-energy electron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the lattice and electronic structures of the Pb(111) surface upon the adsorption of Au atoms at the low temperature T = 40 K. Unlike earlier results showing the formation of PbAu-alloy layers at room temperature, we found that Au atoms form a ultra-thin superstructure, Au/Pb(111)-3 × 3, on top of the Pb(111) surface. Moreover, three surface-state bands, S1, S2, and S3, are induced within and immediately adjacent to the Pb bulk projected band gap centered at the surface zone boundary $${\overline{\text{M}}}_{Pb(111)}$$ M ¯ P b ( 111 ) at the energies of − 0.02, − 1.05, and − 2.56 eV, respectively. First-principles calculation based on Au/Pb(111)-3 × 3 confirms the measured surface-state bands among which the most interesting are the S1 and S3 surface states. They are derived from surface resonances in Pb(111). Moreover, S1, which disperses across Fermi level, exhibits a large anisotropic Rashba splitting with α of 1.0 and 3.54 eVÅ in the two symmetry directions centered at $${\overline{\text{M}}}_{Pb(111)}$$ M ¯ P b ( 111 ) . The corresponding Rashba splitting of S1 bands in Cu/Pb(111)-3 × 3 and Ag/Pb(111)-3 × 3 was calculated for comparison.

Abstract In this research, the one-step synthesis of novel porphyrin-based nanocomposites was performed easily using a photochemical under visible light illumination strategy. As a result, the focus of this research is on synthesizing and using decorated ZnTPP (zinc(II)tetrakis(4-phenyl)porphyrin) nanoparticles with Ag, Ag/AgCl/Cu, and Au/Ag/AgCl nanostructures as antibacterial agents. Initially, ZnTPP NPs were synthesized as a result of the self-assembly of ZnTPP. In the next step, in a visible-light irradiation photochemically process, the self-assembled ZnTPP nanoparticles were used to make ZnTPP/Ag NCs, ZnTPP/Ag/AgCl/Cu NCs, and ZnTPP/Au/Ag/AgCl NCs. A study on the antibacterial activity of nanocomposites was carried out for Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus as pathogen microorganisms by the plate count method, well diffusion tests, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values determination. Thereafter, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) were determined by the flow cytometry method. All the antibacterial tests and the flow cytometry ROS measurements were carried out under LED light and in dark. The (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was applied to investigate the cytotoxicity of the ZnTPP/Ag/AgCl/Cu NCs, against Human foreskin fibroblast (HFF-1) normal cells. Due to the specific properties such as admissible photosensitizing properties of porphyrin, mild reaction conditions, high antibacterial properties in the presence of LED light, crystal structure, and green synthesis, these nanocomposites were recognized as kinds of antibacterial materials that are activated in visible light, got the potential for use in a broad range of medical applications, photodynamic therapy, and water treatment.

Abstract Herein, a sensitive colorimetric detection strategy is proposed for Ag+ detection based on the use of environmentally friendly synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), at room temperature, using (tannic acid, TA), as the reductant and pullulan (PUL) as stabilizing agent. The colloidal solution (TA/PUL-AuNPs), at the optimal synthesis conditions, showed maximum absorbance at 529 nm with a berry red color. TEM and FESEM validated that the particles are spherical and monodispersed, while other characterization results elucidated the role of pullulan in the nano-synthesis. Ag+ addition to the probe (TA/PUL-AuNPs), pH 11, resulted in naked-eye color changes, owing to Au@Ag core shell nanostructure formation. Further, the added Ag+ is reduced to AgNPs, on the surface of the TA/PUL-AuNPs probe. A hypsochromic shift in the absorption maximum, from 529 to 409 nm was observed, while (AAg+-Abl)@409 nm exhibited linearity with Ag+ concentrations, from 0.100 to 150 µM. The estimated limit of detection was 30.8 nM, which is far lower than the acceptable limit of 0.930 µM from the regulatory agency. The TA/PUL-AuNPs probe was further tested for Ag+ detection in lake water samples, and it displayed satisfactory detection performances for real sample applications.

Abstract Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important molecule in biological and environmental systems. In living systems, H2O2 plays essential functions in physical signaling pathways, cell growth, differentiation, and proliferation. Plasmonic nanostructures have attracted significant research attention in the fields of catalysis, imaging, and sensing applications because of their unique properties. Owing to the difference in the reduction potential, silver nanostructures have been proposed for the detection of H2O2. In this work, we demonstrate the Au@Ag nanocubes for the label- and enzyme-free detection of H2O2. Seed-mediated synthesis method was employed to realize the Au@Ag nanocubes with high uniformity. The Au@Ag nanocubes were demonstrated to exhibit the ability to monitor the H2O2 at concentration levels lower than 200 µM with r2 = 0.904 of the calibration curve and the limit of detection (LOD) of 1.11 µM. In the relatively narrow range of the H2O2 at concentration levels lower than 40 µM, the LOD was calculated to be 0.60 µM with r2 = 0.941 of the calibration curve of the H2O2 sensor. This facile fabrication strategy of the Au@Ag nanocubes would provide inspiring insights for the label- and enzyme-free detection of H2O2.

Abstract Perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly based on the methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) formulation, have been of intense interest for the past decade within the photovoltaics (PV) community, given the stupendous rise in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) attributed to these perovskite formulations, where PCEs have exceeded 25%. However, their long-term stability under operational conditions and environmental storage are still prime challenges to be overcome towards their commercialization. Although studies on the intrinsic perovskite absorber stability have been conducted previously, there are no clear mechanisms for the interaction of electrode-induced absorber degradation pathways, which is the focus of this study. In this report, we have conducted a comprehensive analysis on the impact of the electrode collector layer, specifically Ag and Au, on the degradation mechanism associated with the MAPbI3 and a triple cation absorber, Cs0.05FA0.79MA0.16PbI2.45Br0.55. Notably, Au-based PSCs for both absorbers in an n-i-p architecture showed superior PCE over Ag-based PSCs, where the optimized PCE of MAPbI3 and triple cation-based PSCs was 15.39% and 18.21%, respectively. On the other hand, optimized PCE of MAPbI3 and triple cation-based PSCs with Ag electrodes was 3.02% and 16.44%, respectively. In addition, the Ag-based PSCs showed a rapid decrease in PCE over Au-based PSCs through operational stability measurements. We hypothesize the mechanism of degradation, arising from the Ag interaction with the absorber through the formation of AgI in the PSCs, leads to corrosion of the perovskite absorber, as opposed to the benign AuI when Au electrodes are used in the solar cell stack. Additionally, novel use of photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) here, allowed us to access key features of the perovskite absorber in situ, while it was in contact with the various layers within the n-i-p solar cell stack. A quenching in the PL peak in the case of Ag-contacted MAPbI3 provided direct evidence of the Ag corrupting the optical properties of the absorber through the formation of AgI which our X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirmed. This was supported by the fact that an emission peak was still present in the triple cation Ag-device. For the Au-contacted MAPbI3 the presence of a well-defined PL peak, though attenuated from the triple cation Au-device, suggested the AuI does not quell the emission spectrum for either the triple cation or the MAPbI3 absorber. The findings should aid in the understanding and design of new electrode materials with PSCs, which will help accelerate their introduction into the commercial sector in the future.

Abstract We present here a scalable and environmentally friendly gas phase technique employing atmospheric pressure electrical spark discharge plasmas for the production of Au/Co binaries, an effective catalyst system for the decomposition of hydrogen-rich compounds, such as ammonium borane. We demonstrate that Au/Co alloy nanoparticles can be produced via the spark plasma-based technique. The possibility of varying the morphology and phase structure via real time heat treatment of the generated aerosol to form Au/Co/CoO particles with continuous control over a wide particle compositional range (from 24 to 64 at.% [Co]/([Co] + [Au]) content) is also demonstrated. Since our spark-based approach is proven to be capable of providing reasonable particle yields, these results may contribute to the transition of lab-scale, nanocatalyst-based hydrogen storage systems to real world applications.

Abstract Nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical applications and cancer treatments due to their minute scale, multi-function, and long retention time. Among the various nanoparticles, the unique optical property derived from the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic nanoparticles is a primary reason that metallic nanoparticles are researched and applied. Copper and Iron nanoparticles have the potential to generate hydroxyl radicals in excess H2O2 via Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. On the other hand, gold nanoparticles equipped with a photosensitizer can transfer the energy of photons to chemical energy and enhance the production of singlet oxygen, which is suitable for cancer treatment. With the actions of these two reactive oxygen species in the tumor microenvironment, cell apoptosis can further be induced. In this work, we first synthesized dual metal nanoparticles with poly[styrene-alt-(maleic acid, sodium salt)(Cu ferrite oxide-polymer) by a simple one-step hydrothermal reduction reaction. Then, gold(III) was reduced and doped into the structure, which formed a triple metal structure, Au-doped Cu ferrite nanoparticles (Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer NPs). The metal ratio of the product could be controlled by manipulating the Fe/Cu ratio of reactants and the sequence of addition of reactants. The core–shell structure was verified by transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen generation ability of Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer was proved. The chemodynamic and photodynamic effect was measured, and the in vitro ROS generation was observed. Furthermore, the behavior of endocytosis by cancer cells could be controlled by the magnetic field. The result indicated that Au/Cu ferrite oxide-polymer core–shell nanoreactor is a potential agent for chemodynamic/photodynamic synergetic therapy.

Abstract Au-decorated Bi2Se3 nanoplatelet heterostructures are fabricated by a two-step process of thermal CVD at 600 °C and magnetron sputtering at room-temperature. The crystal structures and binding energies of rhombohedral Bi2Se3 and FCC Au are determined by XRD, HRTEM, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy. XPS and Raman spectroscopy reveal the interaction between Au and Bi2Se3 by shifting in the binding energies of Au–Au, Au–Se and Bi–Se bonds and the wavenumber of A1g 2 and Eg 2 modes. Au-decorated Bi2Se3 nanoplatelet heterostructures are observed using FESEM, and confirmed by XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and HRTEM imaging. Their optical band gap of the Au-decorated Bi2Se3 nanoplatelet heterostructures increases with Au thickness about 1.92-fold as much as that of pristine Bi2Se3 (0.39 eV), owing to the Burstein-Moss effect. The optical absorptance of the Au-decorated Bi2Se3 nanoplatelet heterostructures revealed increment with wavelength from 200 to 500 nm and decrement with increasing wavelength from 500 to 800 nm.

Abstract Zinc oxide-silver (ZnO–Ag), and zinc oxide-gold (ZnO–Au) nano-composites were prepared through wet chemical process and laced into single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to yield ZnO–Ag-SWCNTs, and ZnO–Au-SWCNTs hybrids. These nano-composite-laced SWCNTs hybrids were characterized using Raman spectroscopic, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. The hybrids were evaluated for their effects on phagocytic cells and bactericidal activity against the gram-negative bacteria E. coli. Their phagocytic cell activities and intracellular killing actions were found to be significantly increased, as the ZnO–Ag-SWCNTs and ZnO–Au-SWCNTs nano-hybrids induced widespread clearance of Escherichia coli. An increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) also led to upregulated phagocytosis, which was determined mechanistically to involve the phagocyte NADPH oxidase (NOX2) pathway. The findings emphasized the roles of ZnO–Ag- and ZnO–Au-decorated SWCNTs in the prevention of bacterial infection by inhibiting biofilm formation, showing the potential to be utilized as catheter coatings in the clinic.
