In intensive care unit (ICU) patients undergoing mechanical ventilation (MV), the occurrence of difficult weaning contributes to increased ventilator-related complications, prolonged hospitalization duration, and a significant rise in healthcare costs. Therefore, early identification of influencing factors and prediction of patients at risk of difficult weaning can facilitate early intervention and preventive measures. This study aimed to strengthen airway management for ICU patients by constructing a risk prediction model with comprehensive and individualized offline programs based on machine learning techniques. This study involved the collection of data from 487 patients undergoing MV in the ICU, with a total of 36 variables recorded. The dataset was divided into a training set (70% of the data) and a test set (30% of the data). Five machine learning models, namely logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, light gradient boosting machine, and extreme gradient boosting, were compared to predict the risk of difficult weaning in ICU patients with MV. Significant influencing factors were identified based on the results of these models, and a risk prediction model for ICU patients with MV was established. When evaluating the models using AUC (Area under the Curve of ROC) and Accuracy as performance metrics, the Random Forest algorithm exhibited the best performance among the five machine learning algorithms. The area under the operating characteristic curve for the subjects was 0.805, with an accuracy of 0.748, recall (0.888), specificity (0.767) and F1 score (0.825). This study successfully developed a risk prediction model for ICU patients with MV using a machine learning algorithm. The Random Forest algorithm demonstrated the highest prediction performance. A stroke is a dangerous, life-threatening disease that mostly affects people over 65, but an unhealthy diet is also contributing to the development of strokes at younger ages. Strokes can be treated successfully if they are identified early enough, and suitable therapies are available. The purpose of this study is to develop a stroke prediction model that will improve stroke prediction effectiveness as well as accuracy. Predicting whether someone is suffering from a stroke or not can be accomplished with this proposed machine learning algorithm. In this research, various machine learning techniques are evaluated for predicting stroke on the healthcare stroke dataset. The feature selection algorithms used here are gradient boosting and random forest, and classifiers include the decision tree classifier, Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, logistic regression classifier, gradient boosting classifier, random forest classifier, K neighbors classifier, and Xtreme gradient boosting classifier. In this process, different machine-learning approaches are employed to test predictive methods on different data samples. The study examined mass transfer coefficients in a structured CO2 absorption column using machine learning (ML) and response surface methodology (RSM). Three correlations for the fractional effective area (af), gas phase mass transfer coefficient (kG), and liquid phase mass transfer coefficient (kL) were derived with coefficient of determination (R2) values of 0.9717, 0.9907 and 0.9323, respectively. To develop these correlations, four characteristics of structured packings, including packing surface area (ap), packing corrugation angle (θ), packing channel base (B), and packing crimp height (h), were used. ML used five models, represented as random forest (RF), radial basis function neural network (RBF), multilayer perceptron (MLP), XGB Regressor, and Extra Trees Regressor (ETR), with the best models being radial basis function neural network (RBF) for af (R2 = 0.9813, MSE = 0.00088), RBF for kG (R2 = 0.9933, MSE = 0.00056), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) for kL (R2 = 0.9871, MSE = 0.00089). The channel base had the most impact on af and kL, while crimp height affected kG the most. Air quality is a fundamental component of a healthy environment for human beings. Monitoring networks for air pollution have been established in numerous industrial zones. The data collected by the pervasive monitoring devices can be utilized not only for determining the current environmental condition, but also for forecasting it in the near future. This paper considers the applications of different machine learning methods for the prediction of the two most widely used quantities. Particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of 2.5 and 10 µm, respectively. The data are collected via a proprietary monitoring station, designated as the Ecolumn. The Ecolumn monitors a number of key parameters, including temperature, pressure, humidity, PM 1.0, PM 2.5, and PM 10, in a timely manner. The data were employed in the development of multiple models based on selected machine learning methods. The decision tree, random forest, recurrent neural network, and long short-term memory models were employed. Experiments were conducted with varying hyperparameters and network architectures. Different time scales (10 min, 1 h, and 24 h) were examined. The most optimal results were observed for the Long Short-Term Memory algorithm when utilizing the shortest available time spans (shortest averaging times). The decision tree and random forest algorithms demonstrated unexpectedly high performance for long averaging times, exhibiting only a slight decline in accuracy compared to neural networks for shorter averaging times. In the context of early disease detection, machine learning (ML) has emerged as a vital tool. Feature selection (FS) algorithms play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy of predictive models by identifying the most influential variables. This study, focusing on a retrospective cohort of 4778 COVID-19 patients from Iran, explores the performance of various FS methods, including filter, embedded, and hybrid approaches, in predicting mortality outcomes. The researchers leveraged 115 routine clinical, laboratory, and demographic features and employed 13 ML models to assess the effectiveness of these FS methods based on classification accuracy, predictive accuracy, and statistical tests. The results indicate that a Hybrid Boruta-VI model combined with the Random Forest algorithm demonstrated superior performance, achieving an accuracy of 0.89, an F1 score of 0.76, and an AUC value of 0.95 on test data. This article investigates the behavior of hybrid FRP Concrete-Steel columns with an elliptical cross section. The investigation was carried out by gathering information through literature and conducting a parametric study, which resulted in 116 data points. Moreover, multiple machine learning predictive models were developed to accurately estimate the confined ultimate strain and the ultimate load of confined concrete at the rupture of FRP tube. Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Adaptive Boosting (ADAB), Categorical Boosting (CATB), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) machine learning techniques were utilized for the proposed models. Finally, these models were visually and quantitatively verified and evaluated. It was concluded that the CATB and XGB are standout models, offering high accuracy and strong generalization capabilities. The CATB model is slightly superior due to its consistently lower error rates during testing, indicating it is the best model for this dataset when considering both accuracy and robustness against overfitting. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes widespread, there is increasing attention on investigating bias in machine learning (ML) models. Previous research concentrated on classification problems, with little emphasis on regression models. This paper presents an easy-to-apply and effective methodology for mitigating bias in bagging and boosting regression models, that is also applicable to any model trained through minimizing a differentiable loss function. Our methodology measures bias rigorously and extends the ML model's loss function with a regularization term to penalize high correlations between model errors and protected attributes. We applied our approach to three popular tree-based ensemble models: a random forest model (RF), a gradient-boosted model (GBT), and an extreme gradient boosting model (XGBoost). We implemented our methodology on a case study for predicting road-level traffic volume, where RF, GBT, and XGBoost models were shown to have high accuracy. Low muscle mass is associated with numerous adverse outcomes independent of other associated comorbid diseases. We aimed to predict and understand an individual's risk for developing low muscle mass using proteomics and machine learning. We identified eight biomarkers associated with low pectoralis muscle area (PMA). We built three random forest classification models that used either clinical measures, feature selected biomarkers, or both to predict development of low PMA. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for each model was: clinical-only = 0.646, biomarker-only = 0.740, and combined = 0.744. We displayed the heterogenetic nature of an individual's risk for developing low PMA and identified two distinct subtypes of participants who developed low PMA. While additional validation is required, our methods for identifying and understanding individual and group risk for low muscle mass could be used to enable developments in the personalized prevention of low muscle mass. With the ongoing challenge of air pollution posing serious health and environmental threats, particularly in rapidly industrializing regions, accurate forecasting and effective pollutant identification are crucial for enhancing public health and ecological stability. This study aimed to optimize air quality management through the prediction of the Air Quality Index (AQI) and identification of air pollutants. Our study spans nine representative cities (Hohhot, Yinchuan, Lanzhou, Beijing, Taiyuan, Xi'an, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan) in China, with data collected from January 1, 2015, to November 30, 2021. We proposed a new model for daily AQI prediction, termed VMD-CSA-CNN-LSTM, which employed advanced machine learning techniques, including convolutional neural networks (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, and leveraged the chameleon swarm algorithm (CSA) for hyperparameter optimization, integrated through a variational mode decomposition approach. The model was developed using data from Lanzhou, with a split ratio of 8:1:1 into training, validation, and test sets, achieving an RMSE of 2.25, MAPE of 0.02, adjusted R-squared of 98.91%, and training efficiency of 5.31%. The model was further externally validated in the other eight cities, yielding comparable results, with an adjusted R-squared above 96%, MAPE below 0.1, and RMSE below 7.5. Additionally, we employed a random forest algorithm to identify the primary pollutants contributing to AQI levels. Our results indicated that PM2.5 was the most significant pollutant in Beijing, Taiyuan, and Xi'an, while PM10 was dominant in Hohhot, Yinchuan, and Lanzhou. In Shanghai, Nanjing, and Wuhan, both PM2.5 and PM10 were critical, with ozone also identified as a major air pollutant. The navigational accuracy of sea animals and trans-ocean birds provides inspiration in using geo-magnetic field (GMF) for realizing strategic truly autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) capable of determining their absolute position on earth, without the aid of ship-referenced acoustic baseline systems. Supervised Machine Learning algorithms are applied on the GMF intensity data obtained from NOAA World Magnetic Model for a 900 km2 within the Indian mineral exploratory area in the Central Indian Ocean, with a resolution of 50 m, considering the sensitivity of commercially available magnetometers. It is identified that, for AUVs equipped with magnetometers with a detection sensitivity of 0.1 nT, the supervisory random forest regression and decision tree algorithm trained with priori GMF data, could provide trajectory guidance to AUVs with an absolute mean position accuracy in 2D plane, with reference to the last known position from Integrated Navigation system aided initially with GPS and with acoustic positioning in underwater. The early diagnosis of esophageal cancer (EC) is extremely challenging due to a lack of effective diagnostic methods. The study presented herein aims to assess whether serum volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could be utilised as emerging diagnostic biomarkers for EC. Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) was used to detect VOCs in the serum samples of 55 patients with EC, with samples from 84 healthy controls (HCs) patients analysed as a comparison. All machine learning analyses were based on data from serum VOCs obtained by GC-IMS. A total of 33 substance peak heights were detected in all patient serum samples. The ROC analysis revealed that four machine learning models were effective in facilitating the diagnosis of EC. The identification of anticancer peptides (ACPs) is crucial, especially in the development of peptide-based cancer therapy. The classical models such as Split Amino Acid Composition (SAAC) and Pseudo Amino Acid Composition (PseAAC) lack the incorporation of feature representation. These advancements improve the predictive accuracy and efficiency of ACP identification. Thus, the effort of this research is to propose and develop an advanced framework based on feature extraction. Thus, to achieve this objective herein we propose an Extended Dipeptide Composition (EDPC) framework. The proposed EDPC framework extends the dipeptide composition by considering the local sequence environment information and reforming the CD-HIT framework to remove noise and redundancy. To measure the accuracy, we have performed several experiments. These experiments were employed using four famous machine learning (ML) algorithms named; Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), and K Nearest Neighbor (KNN). For comparisons, we have used accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, precision, recall, and F1-Score as evaluation criteria. The reliability of the proposed framework is further evaluated using statistical significance tests. As a result, the proposed EDPC framework exhibited enhanced performance than SAAC and PseAAC, where the SVM model delivered the highest accuracy of 96. 6% and significant enhancements in specificity, sensitivity, precision, and F1-score over multiple datasets. Due to the incorporation of enhanced feature representation and the incorporation of local and global sequence profiles proposed EDPC achieves higher classification performance. The proposed frameworks can deal with noise and also duplicating features. These are accompanied by a wide range of feature representations. Finally, our proposed framework can be used for clinical applications where ACP identification is essential. Future works will include extending to a larger variety of datasets, incorporating tertiary structural information, and using deep learning techniques to improve the proposed EDPC. Soil mineralogy and texture are directly related to soil carbon due to the physical properties of the clay surface. Traditional techniques for quantifying carbon in soil are time-consuming and expensive, making large-scale quantification for mapping unfeasible. The alternative is the use of soil sensors, such as diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), an economical, fast, and accurate technique for predicting carbon stocks. In this sense, this study aimed to (a) investigate the relationship of C with different soil mineralogical, chemical, and physical attributes for different geological and geomorphological compartments; (b) understand which spectral bands are most important for estimating C content; (c) estimate C content from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy using different mathematical techniques and indicate which one is the best for tropical soil conditions; and (d) map C contents in detail. The study area was the Western Plateau of São Paulo (WPSP), which covers approximately 13 million hectares (~ 48% of the State of São Paulo, Brazil). A total of 265 samples were collected in this area. The attributes clay, silt, sand, crystalline and non-crystalline iron, base saturation, soil density, total pore volume, total C, C stock, kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) and hematite/(hematite + goethite), hematite and goethite contents, and spectral curves were evaluated. The spectra were recorded at 0.5-nm intervals, with an integration time of 2.43 nm s−1 over the 350 to 2500-nm range (350–800 nm—visible—VIS and 801–2500 nm—near-infrared—NIR). The data were subjected to descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, stepwise analysis, and cluster grouping for characterization purposes; partial least squares regression (PLSR) and random forest (RF) for estimation purposes; and geostatistics analysis for creation of spatial maps. Our results indicate that the highest C contents are associated with more clayey soils, oxidic mineralogy, higher total pore volume, and lower soil density in highly dissected basalt compartments. The random forest algorithm associated with the Vis–NIR spectral range is more efficient for estimating and mapping C contents. This suggests that integrating diffuse reflectance spectroscopy with machine learning techniques holds promise for shaping public policies related to land use, mitigating CO2 emissions, and facilitating the implementation of carbon credit policies in a rapid and economically efficient manner. The purpose of this study was to develop a machine learning model for predicting 30-day readmission after bariatric surgery based on laboratory tests. Data were collected from patients who underwent bariatric surgery between 2018 and 2023. Laboratory test indicators from the preoperative stage, one day postoperatively, and three days postoperatively were analyzed. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was used to select the most relevant features. Models constructed included support vector machine (SVM), generalized linear model, multi-layer perceptron, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting. Model performance was evaluated and compared using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). A total of 1262 patients were included, of which 7.69% of cases were readmitted. The SVM model achieved the highest AUROC (0.784; 95% CI 0.696–0.872), outperforming other models. We developed an interpretable machine learning algorithm that prospectively predicts the risk of thrombocytopenia in older critically ill patients during their stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), ultimately aiding clinical decision-making and improving patient care. Data from 2286 geriatric patients who underwent surgery and were admitted to the ICU of Dongyang People's Hospital between 2012 and 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Integrated algorithms were developed, and four machine-learning algorithms were used. Selected characteristics included common demographic data, biochemical indicators, and vital signs. Eight key variables were selected using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator and Random Forest Algorithm. Thrombocytopenia occurred in 18.2% of postoperative geriatric patients, with a higher mortality rate. The C5.0 model showed the best performance, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve close to 0.85, along with unparalleled accuracy, precision, specificity, recall, and balanced accuracy scores of 0.88, 0.98, 0.89, 0.98, and 0.85, respectively. The support vector machine model excelled at predictively assessing thrombocytopenia severity, demonstrating an accuracy rate of 0.80 in the MIMIC database. For the detection of food adulteration, sensitive and reproducible analytical methods are required. Liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) is a highly sensitive method that can be used to obtain analytical fingerprints consisting of a variety of different components. Since the comparability of measurements carried out with different devices and at different times is not given, specific adulterants are usually detected in targeted analyses instead of analyzing the entire fingerprint. However, this comprehensive analysis is desirable in order to stay ahead in the race against food fraudsters, who are constantly adapting their adulterations to the latest state of the art in analytics. We have developed and optimized an approach that enables the separate processing of untargeted LC‑HRMS data obtained from different devices and at different times. We demonstrate this by the successful determination of the geographical origin of honey samples using a random forest model. We then show that this approach can be applied to develop a continuously learning classification model and our final model, based on data from 835 samples, achieves a classification accuracy of 94% for 126 test samples from 6 different countries. In river research, forecasting flow velocity accurately in vegetated channels is a significant challenge. The forecasting performance of various independent and hybrid machine learning (ML) models are thus quantified for the first time in this work. Utilizing flow velocity measurements in both natural and laboratory flume experiments, we assess the efficacy of four distinct standalone machine learning techniques—Kstar, M5P, reduced error pruning tree (REPT) and random forest (RF) models. In addition, we also test for eight types of hybrid ML algorithms trained with an Additive Regression (AR) and Bagging (BA) (AR-Kstar, AR-M5P, AR-REPT, AR-RF, BA-Kstar, BA-M5P, BA-REPT and BA-RF). Findings from a comparison of their predictive capabilities, along with a sensitivity analysis of the influencing factors, indicated: (1) Vegetation height emerged as the most sensitive parameter for determining the flow velocity; (2) all ML models displayed outperforming empirical equations; (3) nearly all ML algorithms worked optimal when the model was built using all of the input parameters. Overall, the findings showed that hybrid ML algorithms outperform regular ML algorithms and empirical equations at forecasting flow velocity. AR-M5P (R2 = 0.954, R = 0.977, NSE = 0.954, MAE = 0.042, MSE = 0.003, and PBias = 1.466) turned out to be the optimal model for forecasting of flow velocity in vegetated-rivers. In this study, optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy combined with machine learning algorithms were used to evaluate 46 tissue cores of surgically resected cervical lymph nodes, some of which harboured oral squamous cell carcinoma nodal metastasis. The ratios obtained between O-PTIR chemical images at 1252 cm−1 and 1285 cm−1 were able to reveal morphological details from tissue samples that are comparable to the information achieved by a pathologist's interpretation of optical microscopy of haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained samples. Additionally, when used as input data for a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN) and random forest (RF) analyses, these yielded sensitivities, specificities and precision of 98.6 ± 0.3%, 92 ± 4% and 94 ± 5%, respectively, and an area under receiver operator characteristic (AUC) of 94 ± 2%. The present study introduces a novel approach utilizing machine learning techniques to predict the crucial mechanical properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECCs), spanning from typical to exceptionally high strength levels. These properties, including compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, and tensile strain capacity, can not only be predicted but also precisely estimated. The investigation encompassed a meticulous compilation and examination of 1532 datasets sourced from pertinent research. Four machine learning algorithms, linear regression (LR), K nearest neighbors (KNN), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGB), were used to establish the prediction model of ECC mechanical properties and determine the optimal model. The optimal model was utilized to employ SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for scrutinizing feature importance and conducting an in-depth parametric analysis. Subsequently, a comprehensive control strategy was devised for ECC mechanical properties. This strategy can provide actionable guidance for ECC design, equipping engineers and professionals in civil engineering and material science to make informed decisions throughout their design endeavors. The results show that the RF model demonstrated the highest prediction accuracy for compressive strength and flexural strength, with R2 values of 0.92 and 0.91 on the test set. The XGB model outperformed in predicting tensile strength and tensile strain capacity, with R2 values of 0.87 and 0.80 on the test set, respectively. The prediction of tensile strain capacity was the least accurate. Meanwhile, the MAE of the tensile strain capacity was a mere 0.84%, smaller than the variability (1.77%) of the test results in previous research. Compressive strength and tensile strength demonstrated high sensitivity to variations in both water-cement ratio (W) and water reducer (WR). In contrast, flexural strength exhibited high sensitivity solely to changes in W. Conversely, the sensitivity of tensile strain capacity to input features was moderate and consistent. The mechanical attributes of ECC emerged from the combined effects of multiple positive and negative features. Notably, WR exerted the most significant influence on compressive strength among all features, whereas polyethylene (PE) fiber emerged as the primary driver affecting flexural strength, tensile strength, and tensile strain capacity. Metastatic gastric cancer (GC) presents significant clinical challenges due to its poor prognosis and limited treatment options. To address this, we conducted a targeted protein biomarker discovery study to identify markers predictive of metastasis in advanced GC (AGC). Serum samples from 176 AGC patients (T stage 3 or higher) were analyzed using the Olink Proteomics Target panels. Patients were retrospectively categorized into nonmetastatic, metastatic, and recurrence groups, and differential protein expression was assessed. Machine learning and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) methods were applied to discover biomarkers and predict prognosis. Four proteins (MUC16, CAIX, 5'-NT, and CD8A) were significantly elevated in metastatic GC patients compared to the control group. Additionally, GSEA indicated that the response to interleukin-4 and hypoxia-related pathways were enriched in metastatic patients. Random forest classification and decision-tree modeling showed that MUC16 could be a predictive marker for metastasis in GC patients. Additionally, ELISA validation confirmed elevated MUC16 levels in metastatic patients. Notably, high MUC16 levels were independently associated with metastatic progression in T3 or higher GC. Predicting postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) before delivery is crucial for enhancing patient outcomes, enabling timely transfer and implementation of prophylactic therapies. We attempted to utilize machine learning (ML) using basic pre-labor clinical data and laboratory measurements to predict postpartum Hemoglobin (Hb) in non-complicated singleton pregnancies. The local databases of two academic care centers on patient delivery were incorporated into the current study. Patients with preexisting coagulopathy, traumatic cases, and allogenic blood transfusion were excluded from all analyses. The association of pre-delivery variables with 24-h post-delivery hemoglobin level was evaluated using feature selection with Elastic Net regression and Random Forest algorithms. A suite of ML algorithms was employed to predict post-delivery Hb levels. Out of 2051 pregnant women, 1974 were included in the final analysis. After data pre-processing and redundant variable removal, the top predictors selected via feature selection for predicting post-delivery Hb were parity (B: 0.09 [0.05–0.12]), gestational age, pre-delivery hemoglobin (B:0.83 [0.80–0.85]) and fibrinogen levels (B:0.01 [0.01–0.01]), and pre-labor platelet count (B*1000: 0.77 [0.30–1.23]). The current study shows that ML models could be utilized as accurate predictors of indirect measures of PPH and can be readily incorporated into healthcare systems. Leptospirosis is a global disease that impacts people worldwide, particularly in humid and tropical regions, and is associated with significant socio-economic deficiencies. Its symptoms are often confused with other syndromes, which can compromise clinical diagnosis and the failure to carry out specific laboratory tests. In this respect, this paper presents a study of three algorithms (Decision Tree, Random Forest and Adaboost) for predicting the outcome (cure or death) of individuals with leptospirosis. Using the records contained in the government National System of Aggressions and Notification (SINAN, in portuguese) from 2007 to 2017, for the state of Pará, Brazil, where the temporal attributes of health care, symptoms (headache, vomiting, jaundice, calf pain) and clinical evolution (renal failure and respiratory changes) were used. In the performance evaluation of the selected models, it was observed that the Random Forest exhibited an accuracy of 90.81% for the training dataset, considering the attributes of experiment 8, and the Decision Tree presented an accuracy of 74.29 for the validation database. So, this result considers the best attributes pointed out by experiment 10: time first symptoms medical attention, time first symptoms ELISA sample collection, medical attention hospital admission time, headache, calf pain, vomiting, jaundice, renal insufficiency, and respiratory alterations. The contribution of this article is the confirmation that artificial intelligence, using the Decision Tree model algorithm, depicting the best choice as the final model to be used in future data for the prediction of human leptospirosis cases, helping in the diagnosis and course of the disease, aiming to avoid the evolution to death. Tabular data analysis is a critical task in various domains, enabling us to uncover valuable insights from structured datasets. While traditional machine learning methods can be used for feature engineering and dimensionality reduction, they often struggle to capture the intricate relationships and dependencies within real-world datasets. In this paper, we present Multi-representation DeepInsight (MRep-DeepInsight), a novel extension of the DeepInsight method designed to enhance the analysis of tabular data. By generating multiple representations of samples using diverse feature extraction techniques, our approach is able to capture a broader range of features and reveal deeper insights. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MRep-DeepInsight on single-cell datasets, Alzheimer's data, and artificial data, showcasing an improved accuracy over the original DeepInsight approach and machine learning methods like random forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, FT-Transformer and L2-regularized logistic regression. Our results highlight the value of incorporating multiple representations for robust and accurate tabular data analysis. Mycotoxin contamination of agricultural commodities is a global public health problem that has remained elusive to various mitigation approaches, particularly in developing countries. Climate change and its impact exacerbates South Africa's vulnerability to mycotoxin contamination, and significantly threatens its's food systems, public health, and agro-economic development. Herein we analyse sixteen years (2005/2006–2020/2021) of annual national meteorological data on South Africa which reveals both systematic and erratic variability in critical climatic factors known to influence mycotoxin contamination in crops. Within the same study period, data on fumonisin (FB) monitoring show clear climate-dependent trends. The strongest positive warming trend is observed between 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 (0.51 °C/year), and a strong positive correlation is likewise established between FB contamination and temperature (r ranging from 0.6 to 0.9). Four machine learning models, viz support vector machines, eXtreme gradient boosting, random forest, and orthogonal partial least squares, are generalized on the historical data with suitable performance (RMSE as low as 0.00). All the adopted models are able to predict future FB contamination patterns with reasonable precision (R2 ranging from 0.34 to 1.00). The most important model feature for predicting average FB contamination (YA) is the historical pattern of average FB contamination in maize within the region (ΣFBs_avg). The two most significant features in modelling maximum FB contamination (YM) are minimum temperature from the CMIP6 data (Pro_tempMIN) and observed precipitation from the CRU data (O_prep). Our study provides strong evidence of the impact of climate change on FB in South Africa and reiterates the significance of machine learning modelling in predicting mycotoxin contamination in light of changing climatic conditions, which could facilitate early warnings and the adoption of relevant mitigation measures that could help in mycotoxin risk management and control. The urgency of interconnected social-ecological dilemmas such as rapid biodiversity loss, habitat loss and fragmentation, and the escalating climate crisis have led to increased calls for the protection of ecologically important areas of the planet. Protected areas (PA) are considered critical to address these dilemmas although growing divides in wellbeing can exacerbate conflict around PAs and undermine effectiveness. We investigate the influence of proximity to PAs on wellbeing outcomes. We develop a novel multi-dimensional index of wellbeing for households and across Africa and use Random Forest Machine Learning techniques to assess the importance score of households' proximity to protected areas on their wellbeing outcomes compared with the importance scores of an array of other social, environmental, and local and national governance factors. This study makes important contributions to the conservation literature, first by expanding the ways in which wellbeing is measured and operationalized, and second, by providing additional empirical support for recent evidence that proximity to PAs is an influential factor affecting observed wellbeing outcomes, albeit likely through different pathways than the current literature suggests. Automated disease diagnosis and prediction, powered by AI, play a crucial role in enabling medical professionals to deliver effective care to patients. While such predictive tools have been extensively explored in resource-rich languages like English, this manuscript focuses on predicting disease categories automatically from symptoms documented in the Afaan Oromo language, employing various classification algorithms. This study encompasses machine learning techniques such as support vector machines, random forests, logistic regression, and Naïve Bayes, as well as deep learning approaches including LSTM, GRU, and Bi-LSTM. Due to the unavailability of a standard corpus, we prepared three data sets with different numbers of patient symptoms arranged into 10 categories. The two feature representations, TF-IDF and word embedding, were employed. The performance of the proposed methodology has been evaluated using accuracy, recall, precision, and F1 score. The experimental results show that, among machine learning models, the SVM model using TF-IDF had the highest accuracy and F1 score of 94.7%, while the LSTM model using word2vec embedding showed an accuracy rate of 95.7% and F1 score of 96.0% from deep learning models. To enhance the optimal performance of each model, several hyper-parameter tuning settings were used. This study investigates the application of cavitation in non-invasive abdominal fat reduction and body contouring, a topic of considerable interest in the medical and aesthetic fields. We explore the potential of cavitation to alter abdominal fat composition and delve into the optimization of fat prediction models using advanced hyperparameter optimization techniques, Hyperopt and Optuna. Our objective is to enhance the predictive accuracy of abdominal fat dynamics post-cavitation treatment. Employing a robust dataset with abdominal fat measurements and cavitation treatment parameters, we evaluate the efficacy of our approach through regression analysis. The performance of Hyperopt and Optuna regression models is assessed using metrics such as mean squared error, mean absolute error, and R-squared score. Our results reveal that both models exhibit strong predictive capabilities, with R-squared scores reaching 94.12% and 94.11% for post-treatment visceral fat, and 71.15% and 70.48% for post-treatment subcutaneous fat predictions, respectively. Additionally, we investigate feature selection techniques to pinpoint critical predictors within the fat prediction models. Techniques including F-value selection, mutual information, recursive feature elimination with logistic regression and random forests, variance thresholding, and feature importance evaluation are utilized. The analysis identifies key features such as BMI, waist circumference, and pretreatment fat levels as significant predictors of post-treatment fat outcomes. Our findings underscore the effectiveness of hyperparameter optimization in refining fat prediction models and offer valuable insights for the advancement of non-invasive fat reduction methods. Estimating penetration rates of Jumbo drills is crucial for optimizing underground mining drilling processes, aiming to reduce costs and time. This study investigates various regression and machine learning methods, including Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Random Forests (RF), to predict the penetration rates (ROP) using multivariate inputs such as operation parameters and rock mass characteristics. The Rock Mass Drillability Index (RDi), incorporating both intact rock properties and structural parameters, was utilized to characterize the rock mass. The dataset was split into 80% for training and 20% for testing. Performance metrics including correlation coefficient (R2), variance accounted for (VAF), mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were calculated for each method to evaluate the accuracy of the predictions. SVR exhibited the best prediction performance for ROP, achieving the highest R2, lowest RMSE, MAE, and MAPE, as well as the largest VAF values of 0.94, 0.15, 0.11, 4.84, and 94.13 during training, and 0.91, 0.19, 0.13, 6.02, and 91.11 during testing, respectively. With this high accuracy, we conclude that the proposed machine learning algorithms are valuable and efficient predictors for estimating jumbo drill penetration rates in underground mining operations. Infection-related consultations on intensive care units (ICU) have a positive impact on quality of care and clinical outcome. However, timing of these consultations is essential and to date they are typically event-triggered and reactive. Here, we investigate a proactive approach to identify patients in need for infection-related consultations by machine learning models using routine electronic health records. Data was retrieved from a mixed ICU at a large academic tertiary care hospital including 9684 admissions. Infection-related consultations were predicted using logistic regression, random forest, gradient boosting machines, and long short-term memory neural networks (LSTM). Overall, 7.8% of admitted patients received an infection-related consultation. Time-sensitive modelling approaches performed better than static approaches. Using LSTM resulted in the prediction of infection-related consultations in the next clinical shift (up to eight hours in advance) with an area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) of 0.921 and an area under the precision recall curve (AUPRC) of 0.541. The successful prediction of infection-related consultations for ICU patients was done without the use of classical triggers, such as (interim) microbiology reports. This study aims to explore the effects of different non-landslide sampling strategies on machine learning models in landslide susceptibility mapping. Non-landslide samples are inherently uncertain, and the selection of non-landslide samples may suffer from issues such as noisy or insufficient regional representations, which can affect the accuracy of the results. In this study, a positive-unlabeled (PU) bagging semi-supervised learning method was introduced for non-landslide sample selection. In addition, buffer control sampling (BCS) and K-means (KM) clustering were applied for comparative analysis. Based on landslide data from Qiaojia County, Yunnan Province, China, collected in 2014, three machine learning models, namely, random forest, support vector machine, and CatBoost, were used for landslide susceptibility mapping. The results show that the quality of samples selected using different non-landslide sampling strategies varies significantly. Overall, the quality of non-landslide samples selected using the PU bagging method is superior, and this method performs best when combined with CatBoost for predicting (AUC = 0.897) landslides in very high and high susceptibility zones (82.14%). In this study, we aimed to create an 11-year hypertension risk prediction model using data from the Trøndelag Health (HUNT) Study in Norway, involving 17 852 individuals (20–85 years; 38% male; 24% incidence rate) with blood pressure (BP) below the hypertension threshold at baseline (1995–1997). We assessed 18 clinical, behavioral, and socioeconomic features, employing machine learning models such as eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Elastic regression, K-Nearest Neighbor, Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Random Forest. For comparison, we used logistic regression and a decision rule as reference models and validated six external models, with focus on the Framingham risk model. The top-performing models consistently included XGBoost, Elastic regression and SVM. These models efficiently identified hypertension risk, even among individuals with optimal baseline BP (< 120/80 mmHg), although improvement over reference models was modest. The recalibrated Framingham risk model outperformed the reference models, approaching the best-performing ML models. Important features included age, systolic and diastolic BP, body mass index, height, and family history of hypertension. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that linear effects sufficed for a well-performing model. The best models efficiently predicted hypertension risk, even among those with optimal or normal baseline BP, using few features. Identifying colour from a distance is challenging due to the external noise associated with the measurement process. The present study focuses on developing a colour measuring system and a novel Multi-target Regression (MTR) model for accurate colour measurement from distance. Herein, a novel MTR method, referred as Multi-Objective Stacked Regression (MOSR) is proposed. The core idea behind MOSR is based on stacking as an ensemble approach with multi-objective evolutionary learning using NSGA-II. A multi-objective optimization approach is used for selecting base learners that maximises prediction accuracy while minimising ensemble complexity, which is further compared with six state-of-the-art methods over the colour dataset. Classification and regression tree (CART), Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) were used as regressor algorithms. MOSR outperformed all compared methods with the highest coefficient of determination values for all three targets of the colour dataset. Rigorous comparison with state-of-the-art methods over 18 benchmarked datasets showed MOSR outperformed in 15 datasets when CART was used as a regressor algorithm and 11 datasets when RF and SVM were used as regressor algorithms. In recent years, automatic image classification methods have significantly progressed, notably black box algorithms such as machine learning and deep learning. Unfortunately, such efforts only focused on improving performance, rather than attempting to explain and interpret how classification models actually operate. This article compares three state-of-the-art algorithms incorporating random forests, gradient boosting and convolutional neural networks for geomorphological mapping. It also attempts to explain how the most effective classifier makes decisions by evaluating which of the geomorphometric variables are most important for automatic mapping and how they affect the classification results using one of the explainable artificial intelligence techniques, namely accumulated local effects (ALE). This method allows us to understand the relationship between predictors and the model's outcome. For these purposes, eight sheets of the digital geomorphological map of Poland on the scale of 1:100,000 were used as the reference material. The classification results were validated using the holdout method and cross-validation for individual sheets representing different morphogenetic zones. The terrain elevation entropy, absolute elevation, aggregated median elevation and standard deviation of elevation had the greatest impact on the classification results among the 15 geomorphometric variables considered. The ALE analysis was conducted for the XGBoost classifier, which achieved the highest accuracy of 92.8%, ahead of Random Forests at 84% and LightGBM at 73.7% and U-Net at 59.8%. We conclude that automatic classification can support geomorphological mapping only if the geomorphological characteristics in the predicted area are similar to those in the training dataset. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia with millions of affected patients worldwide. Currently, there is still no cure and AD is often diagnosed long time after onset because there is no clear diagnosis. Thus, it is essential to study the physiology and pathogenesis of AD, investigating the risk factors that could be strongly connected to the disease onset. Despite AD, like other complex diseases, is the result of the combination of several factors, there is emerging agreement that environmental pollution should play a pivotal role in the causes of disease. In this work, we implemented an Artificial Intelligence model to predict AD mortality, expressed as Standardized Mortality Ratio, at Italian provincial level over 5 years. We employed a set of publicly available variables concerning pollution, health, society and economy to feed a Random Forest algorithm. Using methods based on eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) we found that air pollution (mainly O 3 and N O 2 ) contribute the most to AD mortality prediction. These results could help to shed light on the etiology of Alzheimer's disease and to confirm the urgent need to further investigate the relationship between the environment and the disease. The prediction of flight delays is one of the important and challenging issues in the field of scheduling and planning flights by airports and airlines. Therefore, in recent years, we have witnessed various methods to solve this problem using machine learning techniques. In this article, a new method is proposed to address these issues. In the proposed method, a group of potential indicators related to flight delay is introduced, and a combination of ANOVA and the Forward Sequential Feature Selection (FSFS) algorithm is used to determine the most influential indicators on flight delays. To overcome the challenges related to large flight data volumes, a clustering strategy based on the DBSCAN algorithm is employed. In this approach, samples are clustered into similar groups, and a separate learning model is used to predict flight delays for each group. This strategy allows the problem to be decomposed into smaller sub-problems, leading to improved prediction system performance in terms of accuracy (by 2.49%) and processing speed (by 39.17%). The learning model used in each cluster is a novel structure based on a random forest, where each tree component is optimized and weighted using the Coyote Optimization Algorithm (COA). Optimizing the structure of each tree component and assigning weighted values to them results in a minimum 5.3% increase in accuracy compared to the conventional random forest model. The performance of the proposed method in predicting flight delays is tested and compared with previous research. Speech emotion recognition (SER) has gained an increased interest during the last decades as part of enriched affective computing. As a consequence, a variety of engineering approaches have been developed addressing the challenge of the SER problem, exploiting different features, learning algorithms, and datasets. In this paper, we propose the application of the graph theory for classifying emotionally-colored speech signals. Graph theory provides tools for extracting statistical as well as structural information from any time series. We propose to use the mentioned information as a novel feature set. Furthermore, we suggest setting a unique feature-based identity for each emotion belonging to each speaker. The emotion classification is performed by a Random Forest classifier in a Leave-One-Speaker-Out Cross Validation (LOSO-CV) scheme. The proposed method is compared with two state-of-the-art approaches involving well known hand-crafted features as well as deep learning architectures operating on mel-spectrograms. Experimental results on three datasets, EMODB (German, acted) and AESDD (Greek, acted), and DEMoS (Italian, in-the-wild), reveal that our proposed method outperforms the comparative methods in these datasets. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major worldwide health problem, affecting a large proportion of the world's population and leading to higher morbidity and death rates. The early stages of CKD sometimes present without visible symptoms, causing patients to be unaware. Early detection and treatments are critical in reducing complications and improving the overall quality of life for people afflicted. In this work, we investigate the use of an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI)-based strategy, leveraging clinical characteristics, to predict CKD. This study collected clinical data from 491 patients, comprising 56 with CKD and 435 without CKD, encompassing clinical, laboratory, and demographic variables. To develop the predictive model, five machine learning (ML) methods, namely logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), Naïve Bayes (NB), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), were employed. The optimal model was selected based on accuracy and area under the curve (AUC). Additionally, the SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) and LIME (Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations) algorithms were utilized to demonstrate the influence of the features on the optimal model. Among the five models developed, the XGBoost model achieved the best performance with an AUC of 0.9689 and an accuracy of 93.29%. The analysis of feature importance revealed that creatinine, glycosylated hemoglobin type A1C (HgbA1C), and age were the three most influential features in the XGBoost model. The SHAP force analysis further illustrated the model's visualization of individualized CKD predictions. For further insights into individual predictions, we also utilized the LIME algorithm. This study presents an interpretable ML-based approach for the early prediction of CKD. This study addresses the challenges associated with emergency department (ED) overcrowding and emphasizes the need for efficient risk stratification tools to identify high-risk patients for early intervention. While several scoring systems, often based on logistic regression (LR) models, have been proposed to indicate patient illness severity, this study aims to compare the predictive performance of ensemble learning (EL) models with LR for in-hospital mortality in the ED. A cross-sectional single-center study was conducted at the ED of Imam Reza Hospital in northeast Iran from March 2016 to March 2017. The study included adult patients with one to three levels of emergency severity index. EL models using Bagging, AdaBoost, random forests (RF), Stacking and extreme gradient boosting (XGB) algorithms, along with an LR model, were constructed. The training and validation visits from the ED were randomly divided into 80% and 20%, respectively. After training the proposed models using tenfold cross-validation, their predictive performance was evaluated. Model performance was compared using the Brier score (BS), The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC), The area and precision–recall curve (AUCPR), Hosmer–Lemeshow (H–L) goodness-of-fit test, precision, sensitivity, accuracy, F1-score, and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC). The study included 2025 unique patients admitted to the hospital's ED, with a total percentage of hospital deaths at approximately 19%. In the training group and the validation group, 274 of 1476 (18.6%) and 152 of 728 (20.8%) patients died during hospitalization, respectively. According to the evaluation of the presented framework, EL models, particularly Bagging, predicted in-hospital mortality with the highest AUROC (0.839, CI (0.802–0.875)) and AUCPR = 0.64 comparable in terms of discrimination power with LR (AUROC (0.826, CI (0.787–0.864)) and AUCPR = 0.61). XGB achieved the highest precision (0.83), sensitivity (0.831), accuracy (0.842), F1-score (0.833), and the highest MCC (0.48). Additionally, the most accurate models in the unbalanced dataset belonged to RF with the lowest BS (0.128). Although all studied models overestimate mortality risk and have insufficient calibration (P > 0.05), stacking demonstrated relatively good agreement between predicted and actual mortality. EL models are not superior to LR in predicting in-hospital mortality in the ED. Both EL and LR models can be considered as screening tools to identify patients at risk of mortality. With increasing levels of air pollution, air quality prediction has attracted more attention. Mathematical models are being developed by researchers to achieve precise predictions. Monitoring and prediction of atmospheric PM2.5 levels, as a predominant pollutant, is essential in emission mitigation programs. In this study, meteorological datasets from 9 years in Isfahan city, a large metropolis of Iran, were applied to predict the PM2.5 levels, using four machine learning algorithms including Artificial Neural |Networks (ANNs), K-Nearest-Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector |Machines (SVMs) and ensembles of classification trees Random Forest (RF). The data from 7 air quality monitoring stations located in Isfahan City were taken into consideration. The Confusion Matrix and Cross-Entropy Loss were used to analyze the performance of classification models. Several parameters, including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F1 score, precision, and the area under the curve (AUC), are computed to assess model performance. Finally, by introducing the predicted data for 2020 into ArcGIS software and using the IDW (Inverse Distance Weighting) method, interpolation was conducted for the area of Isfahan city and the pollution map was illustrated for each month of the year. The results showed that, based on the accuracy percentage, the ANN model has a better performance (90.1%) in predicting PM2.5 grades compared to the other models for the applied meteorological dataset, followed by RF (86.1%), SVM (84.6%) and KNN (82.2%) models, respectively. What dataset features affect machine learning (ML) performance has primarily been unknown in the current literature. This study examines the impact of tabular datasets' different meta-level and statistical features on the performance of various ML algorithms. The three meta-level features this study considered are the dataset size, the number of attributes and the ratio between the positive (class 1) and negative (class 0) class instances. It considered four statistical features for each dataset: mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis. After applying the required scaling, this study averaged (uniform and weighted) each dataset's different attributes to quantify its four statistical features. We analysed 200 open-access tabular datasets from the Kaggle (147) and UCI Machine Learning Repository (53) and developed ML classification models (through classification implementation and hyperparameter tuning) for each dataset. Then, this study developed multiple regression models to explore the impact of dataset features on ML performance. We found that kurtosis has a statistically significant negative effect on the accuracy of the three non-tree-based ML algorithms of the Support vector machine (SVM), Logistic regression (LR) and K-nearest neighbour (KNN) for their classical implementation with both uniform and weighted aggregations. This study observed similar findings in most cases for ML implementations through hyperparameter tuning, except for SVM with weighted aggregation. Meta-level and statistical features barely show any statistically significant impact on the accuracy of the two tree-based ML algorithms (Decision tree and Random forest), except for implementation through hyperparameter tuning for the weighted aggregation. When we excluded some datasets based on the imbalanced statistics and a significantly higher contribution of one attribute compared to others to the classification performance, we found a significant effect of the meta-level ratio feature and statistical mean and standard deviation features on SVM, LR and KNN accuracy in many cases. Our findings open a new research direction in understanding how dataset characteristics affect ML performance and will help researchers select appropriate ML algorithms for a possible optimal accuracy outcome. The relationships between acute coronary syndromes (ACS) adverse events and the associated risk factors are typically complicated and nonlinear, which poses significant challenges to clinicians' attempts at risk stratification. Here, we aim to explore the implementation of modern risk stratification tools to untangle how these complex factors shape the risk of adverse events in patients with ACS. We used an interpretable multi-algorithm machine learning (ML) approach and clinical features to fit predictive models to 1,976 patients with ACS in Kuwait. We demonstrated that random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGB) algorithms, remarkably outperform traditional logistic regression model (AUCs = 0.84 & 0.79 for RF and XGB, respectively). Our in-hospital adverse events model identified left ventricular ejection fraction as the most important predictor with the highest interaction strength with other factors. However, using the 30-days adverse events model, we found that performing an urgent coronary artery bypass graft was the most important predictor, with creatinine levels having the strongest overall interaction with other related factors. Our ML models not only untangled the non-linear relationships that shape the clinical epidemiology of ACS adverse events but also elucidated their risk in individual patients based on their unique features. Predictive sports data analytics can be revolutionary for sports performance. Existing literature discusses players' or teams' performance, independently or in tandem. Using Machine Learning (ML), this paper aims to holistically evaluate player-, team-, and conference (season)-level performances in Division-1 Women's basketball. The players were monitored and tested through a full competitive year. The performance was quantified at the player level using the reactive strength index modified (RSImod), at the team level by the game score (GS) metric, and finally at the conference level through Player Efficiency Rating (PER). The data includes parameters from training, subjective stress, sleep, and recovery (WHOOP straps), in-game statistics (Polar monitors), and countermovement jumps. We used data balancing techniques and an Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) classifier to predict RSI and GS with greater than 90% accuracy and a 0.9 F1 score. The XGB regressor predicted PER with an MSE of 0.026 and an R2 of 0.680. Ensemble of Random Forest, XGB, and correlation finds feature importance at all levels. We used Partial Dependence Plots to understand the impact of each feature on the target variable. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is a critical process for reducing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from industrial sources, particularly power plants. This research uses calcium silicate absorbent in combination with machine learning (ML) to predict SO2 concentration within an FGD process. The collected dataset encompasses four input parameters, specifically relative humidity, absorbent weight, temperature, and time, and incorporates one output parameter, which pertains to the concentration of SO2. Six ML models were developed to estimate the output parameters. Statistical metrics such as the coefficient of determination (R2) and mean squared error (MSE) were employed to identify the most suitable model and assess its fitting effectiveness. The random forest (RF) model emerged as the top-performing model, boasting an R2 of 0.9902 and an MSE of 0.0008. The model's predictions aligned closely with experimental results, confirming its high accuracy. The most suitable hyperparameter values for RF model were found to be 74 for n_estimators, 41 for max_depth, false for bootstrap, sqrt for max_features, 1 for min_samples_leaf, absolute_error for criterion, and 3 for min_samples_split. Three-dimensional surface plots were generated to explore the impact of input variables on SO2 concentration. Global sensitivity analysis (GSA) revealed absorbent weight and time significantly influence SO2 concentration. The aim of the present study was to examine the sensitivity of several movement features during running to exhaustion in a subject-specific setup adopting a cross-sectional design and a machine learning approach. Thirteen recreational runners, that systematically trained and competed, performed an exhaustive running protocol on an instrumented treadmill. Respiratory data were collected to establish the second ventilatory threshold (VT2) in order to obtain a reference point regarding the gradual accumulation of fatigue. A machine learning approach was adopted to analyze kinetic and kinematic data recorded for each participant, using a random forest classifier for the region pre and post the second ventilatory threshold. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis was used to explain the models' predictions and to provide insight about the most important variables. The classification accuracy value of the models adopted ranged from 0.853 to 0.962. The most important feature in six out of thirteen participants was the angular range in AP axis of upper trunk C7 (RTAPu) followed by maximum loading rate (RFDmaxD) and the angular range in the LT axis of the C7. SHAP dependence plots also showed an increased dispersion of predictions in stages around the second ventilatory threshold which is consistent with feature interactions. These results showed that each runner used the examined features differently to cope with the increase in fatigue and mitigate its effects in order to maintain a proper motor pattern. Dyskinesias are non preventable abnormal involuntary movements that represent the main challenge of the long term treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) with the gold standard dopamine precursor levodopa. Applying machine learning techniques on the data extracted from the Parkinson's Progression Marker Initiative (PPMI, Michael J. Fox Foundation), this study was aimed to identify PD patients who are at high risk of developing dyskinesias. Data regarding clinical, behavioral and neurological features from 697 PD patients were included in our study. Our results show that the Random Forest was the classifier with the best and most consistent performance, reaching an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of up to 91.8% with only seven features. Information regarding the severity of the symptoms, the semantic verbal fluency, and the levodopa treatment were the most important for the prediction, and were further used to create a Decision Tree, whose rules may guide the pharmacological management of PD symptoms. Our results contribute to the identification of PD patients who are prone to develop dyskinesia, and may be considered in future clinical trials aiming at developing new therapeutic approaches for PD. The lithology log, an integral component of the master log, graphically portrays the encountered lithological sequence during drilling operations. In addition to offering real-time cross-sectional insights, lithology logs greatly aid in correlating and evaluating multiple sections efficiently. This paper introduces a novel workflow reliant on an enhanced weighted average ensemble approach for producing high-resolution lithology logs. The research contends with a challenging multiclass imbalanced lithofacies distribution emerging from substantial heterogeneities within subsurface geological structures. Typically, methods to handle imbalanced data, e.g., cost-sensitive learning (CSL), are tailored for issues encountered in binary classification. Error correcting output code (ECOC) originates from decomposition strategies, effectively breaking down multiclass problems into numerous binary subproblems. The database comprises conventional well logs and lithology logs obtained from five proximate wells within a Middle Eastern oilfield. Utilizing well-known machine learning (ML) algorithms, such as support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), logistic regression (LR), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), as baseline classifiers, this study aims to enhance the accurate prediction of underground lithofacies. Upon recognizing a blind well, the data from the remaining four wells are utilized to train the ML algorithms. After integrating ECOC and CSL techniques with the baseline classifiers, they undergo evaluation. In the initial assessment, both RF and SVM demonstrated superior performance, prompting the development of an enhanced weighted average ensemble based on them. The comprehensive numerical and visual analysis corroborates the outstanding performance of the developed ensemble. The average Kappa statistic of 84.50%, signifying almost-perfect agreement, and mean F-measures of 91.04% emphasize the robustness of the designed ensemble-based workflow during the evaluation of blind well data. The escalating threat of natural disasters to public safety worldwide underlines the crucial role of effective environmental risk management tools, such as insurance. This is particularly evident in the case of earthquakes that occurred in Oklahoma between 2011 and 2020, which were linked to wastewater injection, underscoring the need for earthquake insurance. In this regard, from a survey of 812 respondents in Oklahoma, USA, we used supervised machine learning techniques (i.e., logit, ridge, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), decision tree, and random forest classifiers) to identify the factors that influence earthquake insurance uptake and to predict individuals who would acquire earthquake insurance. Our findings reveal that influential factors that affect earthquake insurance uptake include demographic factors such as older age, male gender, race, and ethnicity. These were found to significantly influence the decision to purchase earthquake insurance. Additionally, individuals residing in rental properties were less likely to purchase earthquake insurance, while longer residency in Oklahoma had a positive influence. Past experience of earthquakes was also found to positively influence the decision to purchase earthquake insurance. Both decision trees and random forests demonstrated good predictive capabilities for identifying earthquake insurance uptake. Notably, random forests exhibited higher precision and robustness, emerging as an encouraging choice for earthquake insurance modeling and other classification problems. Empirically, we highlight the importance of insurance as an environmental risk management tool and emphasize the need for awareness and education on earthquake insurance as well as the use of supervised machine learning algorithms for classification problems. Preterm birth prediction is essential for improving neonatal outcomes. While many machine learning techniques have been applied to predict preterm birth using health records, inflammatory markers, and vaginal microbiome data, the role of prenatal oral microbiome remains unclear. This study aimed to compare oral microbiome compositions between a preterm and a full-term birth group, identify oral microbiome associated with preterm birth, and develop a preterm birth prediction model using machine learning of oral microbiome compositions. Participants included singleton pregnant women admitted to Jeonbuk National University Hospital between 2019 and 2021. Subjects were divided into a preterm and a full-term birth group based on pregnancy outcomes. Oral microbiome samples were collected using mouthwash within 24 h before delivery and 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing was performed to analyze taxonomy. Differentially abundant taxa were identified using DESeq2. A random forest classifier was applied to predict preterm birth based on the oral microbiome. A total of 59 women participated in this study, with 30 in the preterm birth group and 29 in the full-term birth group. There was no significant difference in maternal clinical characteristics between the preterm and the full-birth group. Twenty-five differentially abundant taxa were identified, including 22 full-term birth-enriched taxa and 3 preterm birth-enriched taxa. The random forest classifier achieved high balanced accuracies (0.765 ± 0.071) using the 9 most important taxa. Our study identified 25 differentially abundant taxa that could differentiate preterm and full-term birth groups. A preterm birth prediction model was developed using machine learning of oral microbiome compositions in mouthwash samples. Findings of this study suggest the potential of using oral microbiome for predicting preterm birth. The cultivation of most crops depends upon the regional weather conditions. So, the analysis of the agro-climatic conditions of a zone contributes significantly to deciding the right crop for the right land in the right season to obtain a better yield. Machine learning algorithms facilitate this process to a great extent for better results. In this paper, the authors proposed an ML-based crop selection model based on the weather conditions and soil parameters, collectively. Weather analysis is done using LSTM RNN and the process of crop selection is completed using Random Forest Classifier. This model gives better results for weather prediction in comparison to ANN. With LSTM RNN, the RMSE observed in Min. Temp. prediction is 5.023%, Max. Temp. Prediction is 7.28%, and Rainfall Prediction is 8.24%. In the second phase, the Random Forest Classifier showed 97.235% accuracy for crop selection, 96.437% accuracy in predicting resource dependency, and 97.647 accuracies in giving the appropriate sowing time for the crop. The model construction time taken with a random forest classifier using mentioned data size is 5.34 s. The authors also suggested the future research direction to further improve this work. Puerariae Thomsonii Radix (PTR) is not only widely used in disease prevention and treatment but is also an important raw material as a source of starch and other food. The growth years of PTR are closely related to its quality. The rapid and nondestructive identification of growth year is essential for the quality control of PTR and other traditional Chinese medicines. In this study, we proposed a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based classification framework in conjunction with hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology for the rapid identification of the growth years of PTRs. Traditional treatment methods (i.e., multiplicative scatter correction, standard normal variate, and Savitzky-Golay smoothing) combined with machine learning algorithms (i.e., random forest, logistic regression, naive Bayes, and eXtreme gradient boost) were used as baseline models. Among them, the F1-score of CNN-based models based on PTRs' outer surfaces was over 90%, outperforming all the other baseline models. These results showed that it was feasible to use a deep learning algorithm in conjunction with HSI technology to identify the growth years of PTR. This method provides a fast, nondestructive, and simple method of identifying the growth years of PTR.
