As optical metasurfaces become progressively ubiquitous, the expectations from them are becoming increasingly complex. The limited number of structural parameters in the conventional metasurface building blocks, and existing phase engineering rules do not completely support the growth rate of metasurface applications. In this paper, we present digitized-binary elements, as alternative high-dimensional building blocks, to accommodate the needs of complex-tailorable-multifunctional applications. To design these complicated platforms, we demonstrate adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA), as a powerful evolutionary optimizer, capable of handling such demanding design expectations. We solve four complex problems of high current interest to the optics community, namely, a binary-pattern plasmonic reflectarray with high tolerance to fabrication imperfections and high reflection efficiency for beam-steering purposes, a dual-beam aperiodic leaky-wave antenna, which diffracts TE and TM excitation waveguides modes to arbitrarily chosen directions, a compact birefringent all-dielectric metasurface with finer pixel resolution compared to canonical nano-antennas, and a visible-transparent infrared emitting/absorbing metasurface that shows high promise for solar-cell cooling applications, to showcase the advantages of the combination of binary-pattern metasurfaces and the AGA technique. Each of these novel applications encounters computational and fabrication challenges under conventional design methods, and is chosen carefully to highlight one of the unique advantages of the AGA technique. Finally, we show that large surplus datasets produced as by-products of the evolutionary optimizers can be employed as ingredients of the new-age computational algorithms, such as, machine learning and deep leaning. In doing so, we open a new gateway of predicting the solution to a problem in the fastest possible way based on statistical analysis of the datasets rather than researching the whole solution space.

In this paper, we propose a network-based technique to analyze bills-voting data comprising the votes of Brazilian congressmen for a period of 28 years. The voting sessions are initially mapped into static networks, where each node represents a congressman and each edge stands for the similarity of votes between a pair of congressmen. Afterwards, the constructed static networks are converted to temporal networks. Our analyses on the temporal networks capture some of the main political changes happened in Brazil during the period of time under consideration. Moreover, we find out that the bills-voting networks can be used to identify convicted politicians, who commit corruption or other financial crimes. Therefore, we propose two conviction prediction methods, one is based on the highest weighted convicted neighbor and the other is based on link prediction techniques. It is a surprise to us that the high accuracy (up to 90% by the link prediction method) on predicting convictions is achieved only through bills-voting data, without taking into account any financial information beforehand. Such a feature makes possible to monitor congressmen just by considering their legal public activities. In this way, our work contributes to the large scale public data study using complex networks.

Currently, surgical staples are composed of non–biodegradable titanium (Ti) that can cause allergic reactions and interfere with imaging. This paper proposes a novel biodegradable magnesium (Mg) alloy staple and discusses analyses conducted to evaluate its safety and feasibility. Specifically, finite element analysis revealed that the proposed staple has a suitable stress distribution while stapling and maintaining closure. Further, an immersion test using artificial intestinal juice produced satisfactory biodegradable behavior, mechanical durability, and biocompatibility in vitro. Hydrogen resulting from rapid corrosion of Mg was observed in small quantities only in the first week of immersion, and most staples maintained their shapes until at least the fourth week. Further, the tensile force was maintained for more than a week and was reduced to approximately one-half by the fourth week. In addition, the Mg concentration of the intestinal artificial juice was at a low cytotoxic level. In porcine intestinal anastomoses, the Mg alloy staples caused neither technical failure nor such complications as anastomotic leakage, hematoma, or adhesion. No necrosis or serious inflammation reaction was histopathologically recognized. Thus, the proposed Mg alloy staple offers a promising alternative to Ti alloy staples.

Curling is a sport in which players deliver a cylindrical granite stone on an ice sheet in a curling hall toward a circular target located 28.35 m away. The stone gradually moves laterally, or curls, as it slides on ice. Although several papers have been published to propose a mechanism of the curling phenomenon for the last 100 years, no established theory exists on the subject, because detailed measurements on a pebbled ice surface and a curling stone sliding on ice and detailed theoretical model calculations have yet to be available. Here we show using our precise experimental data that the curl distance is primarily determined by the surface roughness and the surface area of the running band on the bottom of a stone and that the ice surface condition has smaller effects on the curl distance. We also propose a possible mechanism affecting the curling phenomena of a curing stone based on our results. We expect that our findings will form the basis of future curling theories and model calculations regarding the curling phenomenon of curling stones. Using the relation between the curl distance and the surface roughness of the running band in this study, the curl distance of a stone sliding on ice in every curling hall can be adjusted to an appropriate value by changing the surface roughness of the running band on the bottom of a stone.

The Victoria Cross is the United Kingdom’s premier military award for bravery, presented for gallantry during active operations. Since its inception in 1856 just 1358 have been awarded, and, due to their rarity and historic interest, have become highly prized amongst private and public collections. Unresolved, however, is a debate about the source material of the medals. Some authorities adhere to a traditional belief that all medals have been cast from the bronze of guns captured from the Russians at Sebastopol. Furthermore, controversy is attached to the authenticity of some VCs. In this study we used X-ray fluorescence spectrometry data to compare the metal compositions of 100 Victoria Crosses, covering 7% of those ever issued. Using Gaussian mixture modelling we identify that Victoria Crosses fall into four distinct clusters, confirming that the primary split occurred between medals issued prior to and after 1914. Using these data we investigate the potential of X-ray fluorescence to inform the study of medals whose authenticity have been queried, showing some have unusually similar compositions to other VCs. This paper highlights how X-ray fluorescence data in conjunction with clustering approaches can be used to effectively and non-destructively investigate the authenticity and history of Victoria Crosses.

This paper presents a fibre cavity ring down spectroscopy probed by Rayleigh scattering optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), which provides spatial location of stimuli and improved signal to noise ratio for distributed sensing measurements. A section of optical fibre was integrated into an active fibre ring cavity with optical gain and interrogated by the OFDR system for 11 cycles with a single laser scan. Through the cavity ring down configuration, root-mean-squared (RMS) noise of distributed temperature and strain measurements was reduced to 6.9 mK and less than 0.1 με, respectively for 1-cm spatially resolved measurements. Our work shows that the active fibre cavity configuration can be combined with distributed fibre sensing schemes to achieve both high spatial resolution and high sensitivity measurements.

High purity layered YbB2C2 powder is synthesized by a boro/carbothermic reduction method using YbBO3, B4C and graphite powders as raw materials. Its X-ray diffraction data are presented, and the space group P4/mbm (No. 127) is confirmed. The lattice parameters are a = b = 5.3389 Å and c = 3.5683 Å, and the atom positions are Yb (0.0000, 0.0000, 0.0000), B (0.3621, 0.8621, 0.5000), and C (0.1606, 0.6606, 0.5000). Porous YbB2C2 ceramics have a high porosity in the range of 69.89–58.11% and a high compressive strength in the range of 19.49–63.44 MPa. Furthermore, the as-produced porous YbB2C2 ceramics show unique chemical activity. Porous YbB2C2 ceramic with a porosity of 69.89% emits so much heat that it can burn a piece of paper when this ceramic is wetted by water. The rate of reaction between the porous YbB2C2 ceramic and water can be simply controlled by adjusting the porosity. The solid reaction products are YbB6, C and an unknown amorphous phase.

This paper presents design, fabrication and cold test of an ultra-wide band travelling wave tube (TWT) with planar alignment multiple pencil beams. The fundamental double-mode of staggered double vane slow wave structure (SDV-SWS) rather than the only one mode are put forward and adopted to match with the same electron beam to increase the bandwidth greatly. Simultaneous planar alignment multiple pencil beam tunnels are designed to improve interaction impedance and then to enhance output power, gain, efficiency, growth rate. The transmission performance of a two-stage 51-period SDV-TWT in G-band with structure attenuator between two sections shows that it indeed has an ultra-wideband performance from 81 to 110 GHz. By using computer numerical control machining, the SDV-SWS was manufactured and a detailed cold test was conducted. Good agreement is found at the wide band, where S21 is above − 5 dB and S11 is below − 10 dB. 3D PIC simulations with double-mode multiple-beam SDV-TWT within total length of 70 mm show that it can get a nearly 2120 W peak output power, a 42.5 dB corresponding gain and a 10.7% electron efficiency at 94 GHz with a 22.1 kV beam voltage and a 3 × 0.15A beam current. The 3 dB bandwidth of our double-mode SDV-TWT can achieve about 29 GHz.

Polyphenols based bioactive compounds from vegetables and fruits are known for impressive antioxidant activity. Ingestion of these antioxidants may promote human health against cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Mango is a popular tropical fruit with special taste, high nutritional value and health-enhancing metabolites. The aim was to investigate the diversity of phytochemicals between two mango cultivars of china at three stages of fruit maturity. We used ESI-QTRAP-MS/MS approach to characterize comprehensively the metabolome of two mango cultivars named Hongguifei (HGF) and Tainong (TN). HPLC was used to quantify selected catechin based phenolic compounds. Moreover, real-time qPCR was used to study the expression profiles of two key genes (ANR and LAR) involved in proanthocyanidin biosynthesis from catechins and derivatives. A total of 651 metabolites were identified, which include at least 257 phenolic compounds. Higher number of metabolites were differentially modulated in peel as compared to pulp. Overall, the relative quantities of amino acids, carbohydrates, organic acids, and other metabolites were increased in the pulp of TN cultivar. While the contents of phenolic compounds were relatively higher in HGF cultivar. Moreover, HPLC based quantification of catechin and derivatives exhibited cultivar specific variations. The ANR and LAR genes exhibited an opposite expression profile in both cultivars. Current study is the first report of numerous metabolites including catechin-based derivatives in mango fruit. These findings open novel possibilities for the use of mango as a source of bioactive compounds.

A great variety of complex physical, natural and artificial systems are governed by statistical distributions, which often follow a standard exponential function in the bulk, while their tail obeys the Pareto power law. The recently introduced $\kappa$-statistics framework predicts distribution functions with this feature. A growing number of applications in different fields of investigation are beginning to prove the relevance and effectiveness of $\kappa$-statistics in fitting empirical data. In this paper, we use $\kappa$-statistics to formulate a statistical approach for epidemiological analysis. We validate the theoretical results by fitting the derived $\kappa$-Weibull distributions with data from the plague pandemic of 1417 in Florence as well as data from the COVID-19 pandemic in China over the entire cycle that concludes in April 16, 2020. As further validation of the proposed approach we present a more systematic analysis of COVID-19 data from countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain and United Kingdom, obtaining very good agreement between theoretical predictions and empirical observations. For these countries we also study the entire first cycle of the pandemic which extends until the end of July 2020. The fact that both the data of the Florence plague and those of the Covid-19 pandemic are successfully described by the same theoretical model, even though the two events are caused by different diseases and they are separated by more than 600 years, is evidence that the $\kappa$-Weibull model has universal features., Comment: 15 pages, 1 table, 5 figures

With the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic currently affecting every corner of the world, we believe there is a critical need to understand how we behaviourally react to the current pandemic. Given currently there is no real treatment or vaccination, containment of the spread of virus are heavily relied on precautionary behaviour from fellow citizens, therefore, understanding the drivers behind behavioural responses such as mobility are of acute importance. We conducted a study to explore risk and human behaviour in the COVID-19 setting across 60 countries by combining the newly released data on human mobility by Google (Community Mobility Reports) with a globally representative dataset on risk preferences based on (Falk et al., 2016; Falk et al., 2018). This paper examines how a move from traditional post-harvest operations of smallholder rice farms in the Ayeyarwaddy delta, Myanmar, to improved post-harvest operations affected income, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE). Harvest and post-harvest losses were investigated in a field experiment with 5 replications per scenario. A comparative analysis on energy efficiency and cost-benefits was conducted for different practices of rice production from cultivation to milling. GHGE of different practices were also considered using a life-cycle assessment approach. The study demonstrates that the mechanized practices increased the net income by 30–50% compared with traditional practices. Despite using additional energy for machine manufacturing and fuel consumption, the mechanized practices significantly reduced postharvest losses and did not increase the total life-cycle enegy and GHGE. Combine harvesting helped to significantly reduce harvesting loss in a range of 3 to 7% (by weight of the rice product). Improved post-harvest management practices with a flatbed dryer and hermetic storage reduced the discoloration of rice grains by 3 to 4% and increased head-rice recovery by 20 to 30% (by weight of rice product). The research findings provide empirical evidence that improved post-harvest management of rice in the Ayeyarwaddy delta, compared to traditional post-harvest operations by smallholder farmers, reduce post-harvest losses and improve the quality of rice. The findings provide valuable information for policy makers involved in formulating evidence-based mechanization policies in South and Southeast Asia.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a life-threatening lung disease, affecting millions of people worldwide. Implementation of Machine Learning (ML) techniques is crucial for the effective management of COPD in home-care environments. However, shortcomings of cloud-based ML tools in terms of data safety and energy efficiency limit their integration with low-power medical devices. To address this, energy efficient neuromorphic platforms can be used for the hardware-based implementation of ML methods. Therefore, a memristive neuromorphic platform is presented in this paper for the on-chip recognition of saliva samples of COPD patients and healthy controls. Results of its performance evaluations showed that the digital neuromorphic chip is capable of recognizing unseen COPD samples with accuracy and sensitivity values of 89% and 86%, respectively. Integration of this technology into personalized healthcare devices will enable the better management of chronic diseases such as COPD.

This paper aims to calculate a relevance model of visual limitation (V.L.) in keratoconus patients based on refractive and topographic parameters. A cross-sectional study was carried out in Torrecárdenas Hospital, Almería, Spain, between February 2018 and July 2019. It included 250 keratoconus patients. Two groups were created according to a grading system of V.L. based on RETICS (Red Temática de Investigación Cooperativa en Salud) classification: keratoconus patients with no V.L. (best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) ≤ 0.05 logMAR) and keratoconus patients with V.L. (BSCVA > 0.05 logMAR). Correlations and a binary logistic regression were established. In Hungary, the economic losses caused by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) led to the launching of a national PRRSV Eradication Program. An important element of the program was investigating the spread of PRRSV among swine herds and the possible ways of introduction by sequencing of the open reading frame 5 (ORF5) gene. However, the classical phylogenetic tree presentation cannot explain several genetic relationships clearly, while more precise visualization can be represented by network tree diagram. In this paper, we describe a practical and easy-to-follow enriched minimum spanning similarity network application for improved representation of phylogenetic relations among viral strains. This method eliminated the necessity of applying a predefined, arbitrary cut-off or computationally extensive algorithms. The network-based visualization allowed processing and visualizing large amount of data equally for the laboratory, private and official veterinarians, and helped identify the potential connections between different viral sequences that support data-driven decisions in the eradication program. By applying network analysis, previously unknown epidemiological connections between infected herds were identified, and virus spreading was analyzed within short period of time. In our study, we successfully built and applied network analysis tools in the course of the Hungarian PRRSV Eradication Program.

Alternative paths in a network play an important role in its functionality as they can maintain the information flow under node/link failures. In this paper we explore the navigation of a network taking into account the alternative paths and in particular how can we describe this navigation in a concise way. Our approach is to simplify the network by aggregating into groups the nodes that do not contribute to alternative paths. We refer to these groups as super-nodes, and describe the post-aggregation network with super-nodes as the skeleton network. We present a method to describe with the least amount of information the paths in the super-nodes and skeleton network. Applying our method to several real networks we observed that there is scaling behaviour between the information required to describe all the paths in a network and the minimal information to describe the paths of its skeleton. We show how from this scaling we can evaluate the information of the paths for large networks with less computational cost.

Multi-colloidal systems exhibit a variety of structural and functional complexity owing to their ability to interact amongst different components into self-assembled structures. This paper presents experimental confirmations that reveal an interesting sharp phase transition during the drying state and in the dried film as a function of diluting concentrations ranging from 100% (undiluted whole blood) to 12.5% (diluted concentrations). An additional complementary contact angle measurement exhibits a monotonic decrease with a peak as a function of drying. This peak is related to a change in visco-elasticity that decreases with dilution, and disappears at the dilution concentration for the observed phase transition equivalent to 62% (v/v). This unique behavior is clearly commensurate with the optical image statistics and morphological analysis; and it is driven by the decrease in the interactions between various components within this bio-colloid. The implications of these phenomenal systems may address many open-ended questions of complex hierarchical structures.

Somatic hybridisation in the carrot, as in other plant species, enables the development of novel plants with unique characteristics. This process can be induced by the application of electric current to isolated protoplasts, but such electrofusion requires an effective hybrid cell identification method. This paper describes the non-toxic fluorescent protein (FP) tagging of protoplasts which allows discrimination of fusion components and identification of hybrids in real-time during electrofusion. One of four FPs: cyan (eCFP), green (sGFP), yellow (eYFP) or the mCherry variant of red FP (RFP), with a fused mitochondrial targeting sequence, was introduced to carrot cell lines of three varieties using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. After selection, a set of carrot callus lines with either GFP, YFP or RFP-labelled mitochondria that showed stable fluorescence served as protoplast sources. Various combinations of direct current (DC) parameters on protoplast integrity and their ability to form hybrid cells were assessed during electrofusion. The protoplast response and hybrid cell formation depended on DC voltage and pulse time, and varied among protoplast sources. Heterofusants (GFP + RFP or YFP + RFP) were identified by detection of a dual-colour fluorescence. This approach enabled, for the first time, a comprehensive assessment of the carrot protoplast response to the applied electric field conditions as well as identification of the DC parameters suitable for hybrid formation, and an estimation of the electrofusion success rate by performing real-time observations of protoplast fluorescence.

Potential spray nozzles and adjuvants should be studied to determine its effects on drift and volatility of dicamba tank-mixtures. The objective of this study was to evaluate physicochemical characteristics of spray solutions containing dicamba; to analyze droplet size effect with air induction nozzles; and to assess dicamba volatilization on soybean plants with a proposed methodology. Treatments included dicamba only and mixtures with herbicides and adjuvants. Dicamba mixed with lecithin + methyl soybean oil + ethoxylated alcohol adjuvant had the greatest efficacy potential among treatments considering tank-mixture pH, surface tension, contact angle and droplet size. The MUG11003 nozzle produced the coarsest droplet size and was better suited for drift management among nozzle types. The proposed volatilization methodology successfully indicated dicamba volatilization in exposed soybean plants and among the evaluated treatments, it showed greater volatilization for dicamba with glyphosate + lecithin + propionic acid adjuvant. Fluid-saturated rocks are multi-phasic materials and the mechanics of partitioning the externally applied stresses between the porous skeleton of the rock and the interstitial fluids has to take into consideration the mechanical behaviour of the phases. In these studies the porosity of the multi-phasic material is important for estimating the multi-phasic properties and most studies treat the porosity as a scalar measure without addressing the influence of pore shape and pore geometry. This paper shows that both the overall bulk modulus of a porous medium and the Biot coefficient depend on the shape of the pores. Pores with shapes resembling either thin oblate spheroids or spheres are considered. The Mori–Tanaka and the self-consistent methods are used to estimate the overall properties and the results are compared with experimental data. The pore density and the aspect ratio of the spheroidal pores influence the porosity of the geomaterials. For partially saturated rocks, the equivalent bulk modulus of the fluid–gas mixture occupying the pore space can also be obtained. The paper also examines the influence of the pore shape in estimating the Biot coefficient that controls the stress partitioning in fluid-saturated poroelastic materials.

Social network analysis has recently attracted lots of attention among researchers due to its wide applicability in capturing social interactions. Link prediction, related to the likelihood of having a link between two nodes of the network that are not connected, is a key problem in social network analysis. Many methods have been proposed to solve the problem. Among these methods, similarity-based methods exhibit good efficiency by considering the network structure and using as a fundamental criterion the number of common neighbours between two nodes to establish structural similarity. High structural similarity may suggest that a link between two nodes is likely to appear. However, as shown in the paper, the number of common neighbours may not be always sufficient to provide comprehensive information about structural similarity between a pair of nodes. To address this, a neighbourhood vector is first specified for each node. Then, a novel measure is proposed to determine the similarity of each pair of nodes based on the number of common neighbours and correlation between the neighbourhood vectors of the nodes Experimental results, on a range of different real-world networks, suggest that the proposed method results in higher accuracy than other state-of-the-art similarity-based methods for link prediction.

Across the planet the biogeographic distribution of human cultural diversity tends to correlate positively with biodiversity. In this paper we focus on the biogeographic distribution of mammal species and human cultural diversity. We show that not only are these forms of diversity similarly distributed in space, but they both scale superlinearly with environmental production. We develop theory that explains that as environmental productivity increases the ecological kinetics of diversity increases faster than expected because more complex environments are also more interactive. Using biogeographic databases of the global distributions of mammal species and human cultures we test a series of hypotheses derived from this theory and find support for each. For both mammals and cultures, we show that (1) both forms of diversity increase exponentially with ecological kinetics; (2) the kinetics of diversity is faster than the kinetics of productivity; (3) diversity scales superlinearly with environmental productivity; and (4) the kinetics of diversity is faster in increasingly productive environments. This biogeographic convergence is particularly striking because while the dynamics of biological and cultural evolution may be similar in principle the underlying mechanisms and time scales are very different. However, a common currency underlying all forms of diversity is ecological kinetics; the temperature-dependent fluxes of energy and biotic interactions that sustain all forms of life at all levels of organization. Diversity begets diversity in mammal species and human cultures because ecological kinetics drives superlinear scaling with environmental productivity.

International audience; In standard radiomics studies the features extracted from clinical images are mostly quantified with simple statistics such as the average or variance per Region of Interest (ROI). Such approaches may smooth out any intra-region heterogeneity and thus hide some tumor aggressiveness that may hamper predictions. In this paper we study the importance of feature aggregation within the standard radiomics workflow, which allows to take into account intra-region variations. Feature aggregation methods transform a collection of voxel values from feature response maps (over a ROI) into one or several scalar values that are usable for statistical or machine learning algorithms. This important step has been little investigated within the radiomics workflows, so far. In this paper, we compare several aggregation methods with standard radiomics approaches in order to assess the improvements in prediction capabilities. We evaluate the performance using an aggregation function based on Bags of Visual Words (BoVW), which allows for the preservation of piece-wise homogeneous information within heterogeneous regions and compared with standard methods. The different models are compared on a cohort of 214 head and neck cancer patients coming from 4 medical centers. Radiomics features were extracted from manually delineated tumors in clinical PET-FDG and CT images were analyzed. We compared the performance of standard radiomics models, the volume of the ROI alone and the BoVW model for survival analysis. The average concordance index was estimated with a five fold cross-validation. The performance was significantly better using the BoVW model 0.627 (95% CI: 0.616-0.637) as compared to standard radiomics0.505 (95% CI: 0.499-0.511), mean-var. 0.543 (95% CI: 0.536-0.549), mean0.547 (95% CI: 0.541-0.554), var.0.530 (95% CI: 0.524-0.536) or volume 0.577 (95% CI: 0.571-0.582). We conclude that classical aggregation methods are not optimal in case of heterogeneous tumors. We also showed that the BoVW model is a better alternative to extract consistent features in the presence of lesions composed of heterogeneous tissue.

The present research is focused on the application of glass beads (GBs) in fixed biofilm reactor (FBR) for the treatment of simulated methylene blue (MB) wastewater for 9 weeks under aerobic conditions. The COD of MB wastewater showed a reduction of 86.48% from 2000 to 270.4 mg/L, and BOD was declined up to 97.7% from 1095.5 to 25.03 mg/L. A drastic increase in the pH was observed until the 3rd week (8.5 to 8.28), and later, marginal changes between 8.30 ± 0.02 were noticed. A dramatic fluctuation was observed in ammonia concentration which increased (74.25 mg/L) up till the 2nd week, and from the 3rd week it started declining. In the 9th week, the ammonia concentration dropped to 16.5 mg/L. The color intensity increased significantly up till the 2nd week (259,237.46 Pt/Co) of the experiment and started decreasing slowly thereafter. The SEM–EDX analysis has shown the maximum quantity of carbon content in the GBs without biofilm, and then in the GB samples of 1st, and 9th-week old aerobic biofilms. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy results revealed that the 9th-week GBs has a fine and strong MB peak and matched with that of the MB stock solution. Overall, the results have shown that the GBs filter media were suitable for the development of active biofilm communities for the treatment of dye wastewater. Thus, GBs-FBR system can be used for wastewater treatment to solve the current problem of industrial pollution in many countries and to protect the aquatic environment from dye pollution caused by the textile industry.

The paper presents new knowledge on primary defect formation in tungsten (W) and iron (Fe) irradiated by fission and high-energy neutrons at near-room temperature. Using a well-established method of positron-annihilation lifetime-spectroscopy (PALS), it was found that irradiation of W in the fission reactor and by high-energy neutrons from the p(35 MeV)-Be generator leads to the formation of small radiation-induced vacancy clusters with comparable mean size. In the case of Fe, smaller mean size of primary radiation-induced vacancy clusters was measured after irradiation with fission neutrons compared to irradiation with high-energy neutrons from the p(35 MeV)-Be generator. It was found that one of the reasons of the formation of the larger size of the defects with lower density in Fe is lower flux in the case of irradiation with high-energy neutrons from the p(35 MeV)-Be source. The second reason is enhanced defect agglomeration and recombination within the energetic displacement cascade at high energy primary knock-on-atoms (PKAs). This is consistent with the concept of the athermal recombination corrected (arc-dpa) model, although the measured dpa cross-section of both fission neutrons and wide-spectrum high-energy neutrons in W is between the conventional Norgett–Robinson–Torrens (NRT-dpa) and arc-dpa predictions. This means that the physics of the primary radiation effects in materials is still not fully known and requires further study through a combination of modeling and experimental efforts. The present data serve as a basis for the development of an improved concept of the displacement process.

The present paper studies the locations and linear stability of the triangular equilibrium points when both primaries are radiating and considered as heterogeneous spheroid with three layers of different densities. Additionally, we include the effects of small perturbations in the Coriolis and centrifugal forces and potential from a belt (circumbinary disc). It is observed that the positions of the triangular equilibrium points are substantially affected by all parameters (except a perturbation in Coriolis force) involved in the system.The stabilty of motion is found only when $$0 < \mu < \mu_{c}$$ 0 < μ < μ c , where $$\mu_{c}$$ μ c is the critical mass value which depends on the combined effect of radiation pressures and heterogeneity of the primaries, small perturbations and the potential from a belt.It is also seen that the Coriolis force and the belt have stabilizing effect,while the centrifugal force, radiation and heterogeineity of the primaries have destabilizing behaviour.The net effect is that the size of the region of stability decreases when the value of these parameters increases where $$\mu$$ μ is the mass ratio and $$k_{1} ,k_{2}$$ k 1 , k 2 characterize heterogeneity of both primaries. A practical application of this model could be the study of motion of a dust grain near the heterogeneous and luminous binary stars surrounded by a belt.Finally, we carried out and discuss numerical experiments aiming at computing the positions of triangular points and critical masses of three binary systems: Archid, Xi Booties and Kruger 60.

Unless the molecular axis is fixed in the laboratory frame, intrinsic structural information of molecules can be averaged out over the various rotational states. The macroscopic directional properties of polar molecules have been controlled by two fs pulses with an optimized delay. In the method, the first one-color laser pulse provokes molecular alignment. Subsequently, the molecular sample is irradiated with the second two-color laser pulse, when the initial even—J states are aligned, and the odd—J states are anti-aligned in the thermal ensemble. The second pulse selectively orients only the aligned even—J states in the same direction, which results in significant enhancement of the net degree of orientation. This paper reports the results of simulations showing that the two-pulse technique can be even more powerful when the second pulse is cross-polarized. This study shows that the alignment and orientation can be very well synchronized temporally because the crossed field does not disturb the preformed alignment modulation significantly, suggesting that the molecules are very well confined in the laboratory frame. This cross-polarization method will serve as a promising technique for studying ultrafast molecular spectroscopy in a molecule-fixed frame.
