Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are terminal members of any anaerobic food chain. For example, they critically influence the biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and metals (natural environment) as well as the corrosion of civil infrastructure (built environment). The United States alone spends nearly $4 billion to address the biocorrosion challenges of SRB. It is important to analyze the genetic mechanisms of these organisms under environmental stresses. The current study uses complementary methodologies, viz., transcriptome-wide marker gene panel mapping and gene clustering analysis to decipher the stress mechanisms in four SRB. Here, the accessible RNA-sequencing data from the public domains were mined to identify the key transcriptional signatures. Crucial transcriptional candidate genes of Desulfovibrio spp. were accomplished and validated the gene cluster prediction. In addition, the unique transcriptional signatures of Oleidesulfovibrio alaskensis (OA-G20) at graphene and copper interfaces were discussed using in-house RNA-sequencing data. Furthermore, the comparative genomic analysis revealed 12,821 genes with translation, among which 10,178 genes were in homolog families and 2643 genes were in singleton families were observed among the 4 genomes studied. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide, which after breast, lung and, prostate cancers, is the fourth prevalent cancer in the United States. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have an essential role in the pathogenesis of CRC. Therefore, bioinformatics studies on lncRNAs and their target genes have potential importance as novel biomarkers. In the current study, publicly available microarray gene expression data of colorectal cancer (GSE106582) was analyzed with the Limma, Geoquery, Biobase package. Afterward, identified differentially expressed lncRNAs and their target genes were inserted into Weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) to obtain modules and hub genes. A total of nine differentially expressed lncRNAs (LINC01018, ITCH-IT, ITPK1-AS1, FOXP1-IT1, FAM238B, PAXIP1-AS1, ATP2B1-AS1, MIR29B2CHG, and SNHG32) were identified using microarray data analysis. The WGCNA has identified several hub genes for black (LMOD3, CDKN2AIPNL, EXO5, ZNF69, BMS1P5, METTL21A, IL17RD, MIGA1, CEP19, FKBP14), blue (CLCA1, GUCA2A, UGT2B17, DSC2, CA1, AQP8, ITLN1, BEST4, KLF4, IQCF6) and turquoise (PAFAH1B1, LMNB1, CACYBP, GLO1, PUM3, POC1A, ASF1B, SDCCAG3, ASNS, PDCD2L) modules. The findings of the current study will help to improve our understanding of CRC. Moreover, the hub genes that we have identified could be considered as possible prognostic/diagnostic biomarkers. Salmonella enterica causes an estimated 1 million illnesses in the United States each year, resulting in 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths, and is one of the four major global causes of diarrhoeal diseases. No effective treatments are available to the food industry. Much attention has been given to colicins, natural non-antibiotic proteins of the bacteriocin class, to control the related pathogen Escherichia coli. We searched Salmonella genomic databases for colicin analogues and cloned and expressed in plants five such proteins, which we call salmocins. Among those, SalE1a and SalE1b were found to possess broad antimicrobial activity against all 99 major Salmonella pathovars. Each of the two salmocins also showed remarkably high potency (>10 6  AU/µg recombinant protein, or >10 3 higher than colicins) against major pathogenic target strains. Treatment of poultry meat matrices contaminated with seven key pathogenic serovars confirmed salmocin efficacy as a food safety intervention against Salmonella.

Some researchers in other regions have recommended human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to reduce risk of ovarian cancer, but not in North America, where evidence has previously suggested no role for HPV in ovarian cancer. Here we use a large sample of ovarian cancer transcriptomes (RNA-Seq) from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database to address whether HPV is involved with ovarian cancer in North America. We estimate that a known high-risk type of HPV (type 18) is present and active in 1.5% of cases of ovarian epithelial cancers in the US and Canada. Our detection methods were verified by negative and positive controls, and our sequence matches indicated high validity, leading to strong confidence in our conclusions. Our results indicate that previous reports of zero prevalence of HPV in North American cases of ovarian cancer should not be considered conclusive. This is important because currently used vaccines protect against the HPV-18 that is active in ovarian tumors and, therefore, may reduce risk in North America of cancers of the ovaries as well as of the cervix and several other organ sites.
