Cyclosporine A (CyA) holds significant importance as a strategic immunosuppressive drug for organ transplant patients. In this study, we aimed to produce pure and cost-effective Cyclosporine A (CyA) by fermenting a culture medium containing dairy sludge, using Tolypocladium inflatum PTCC 5253. Following the fermentation stage, ethyl acetate extraction and fast protein liquid chromatography were employed for sample purification. The initial evaluation of the effectiveness of CyA obtained from these processes was performed through bioassay, wherein the antimicrobial clear zone diameter was found to be larger compared to the sample obtained from the fermentation culture. The concentration of CyA was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography, yielding values of 334 mg/L, 456 mg/L, and 578 mg/L for the fermented, extracted, and purified samples, respectively. Further analysis utilizing liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) confirmed a purity of 91.9% and proper agreement with the standard sample based on the ion intensity of Z/m 1205. To validate the structure of CyA, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), and Raman spectroscopy were employed. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry analyses demonstrated that the purified CyA exhibited a crystal structure similar to the standard sample, characterized by two broad peaks at 2θ = 9° and 20°, and comparable glass transition temperatures (57–68 °C for the purified sample; 53–64 °C for the standard sample). Dynamic light scattering analysis confirmed a uniform particle size distribution in both the purified and standard samples. The zeta potentials of the purified and standard samples were determined to be − 25.8 ± 0.16 and − 23.63 ± 0.12 mV, respectively. In this study, we analyze the influences of carbon nanotube (CNT) addition on the martensite transformation and internal friction of Cu–Al–Ni shape-memory alloys (SMAs). X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry results demonstrate that Cu–13.5Al–4Ni–xCNT (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 wt%) SMA/CNT composites exhibit a β 1 (DO 3) ⇄ β 1 ′ (18 R) martensitic transformation. The martensitic transformation temperatures and transformation enthalpies of the martensitic transformation peaks for the Cu–13.5Al–4Ni–xCNT (x = 0–0.8 wt%) composites gradually decrease with the increase in the amount of CNT addition. Compared to the Cu–13.5Al–4Ni SMA, the Cu–13.5Al–4Ni–xCNT (x = 0.2–0.8 wt%) SMA/CNT composites exhibit significant improvements in the amount of dissipation of energy (storage modulus ( E ′)) and mechanical strength. However, the tan δ of the internal friction peak gradually decreases with the increase in the CNT content above 0.6 wt%. The reduction in tan δ is attributed to the decrease in the magnitude of the austenite-to-martensite transformation and precipitation of γ2 (Cu9Al4) phase particles, which impede the interface motion in between the parent/martensitic phase and martensitic phase. To evaluate the possible thermal risks associated with the storage of octogen (HMX), non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments were conducted in order to ascertain the kinetic model and parameters governing its thermal decomposition. DSC measurements indicate that HMX underwent a crystal transformation prior to thermal decomposition. A kinetic model for the autocatalytic thermal decomposition process was developed through the analysis of its primary exothermic peaks. Subsequently, numerical simulations were performed using the aforementioned kinetic model to assess the potential thermal explosion hazard of HMX under two distinct storage conditions. The comparison was made between the models of HMX autocatalytic decomposition temperature and thermal explosion critical temperature under two distinct storage conditions. The prediction of the influence of ambient temperature on the critical temperature of thermal explosion is conducted simultaneously. The present study aimed to fabricate a novel polymeric spongy composite to enhance skin regeneration composed of Nystatin (antifungal agent) and Silver Nanoparticles (AgNps). Different formulations (F1–F8) were developed & characterized by using various analytical techniques. AgNps synthesized by chemical reduction method showed spherical morphology 2 µm in size showed by SEM and XRD. A fine porous structure of gel embedded with AgNps having an amorphous structure with 10 % crystallinity due to AgNps was found. IR spectra revealed no chemical interaction between polymers and Nystatin. An increase in thermal stability of formulation was observed till 700 ℃ analyzed by Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Cytotoxic analysis on L929 mouse skin fibroblast cells showed a decrease in cell viability as Ag concentration increased (inactivating Fibroblast and keratinocytes) while 10 mg composition was found safest concentration (94%). Optimized formulation (F2) presented in-vitro drug release up to 90.59% ± 0.76 at pH 7.4, swelling studies (87.5% ± 0.57), water retention (26.60 ± 0.34), pH (5.31 ± 0.03). In the animal burn model, the group that received CHG/Ag/Nystatin healed the wound significantly (p < 0.05). Hydroxyapatite (HA) can be used in odontology and orthopedic grafts to restore damaged bone due to its stable chemical characteristics, composition, and crystal structural affinity for human bone. A three-step hydrothermal method was used for the extraction of biogenic calcined HA from the buffalo waste bones at 700 °C (HA-700) and 1000 °C (HA-1000). Extracts were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and in vivo examination of HA xenografts for femoral lesions in experimental rats. Crystallinity, purity, and morphology patterns showed that the HA main phase purity was 84.68% for HA-700 and 88.99% for HA-1000. Spherical HA nanoparticles were present for calcined HA-700 samples in the range 57–423 nm. Rats with critical bone lesions of 3 mm in diameter in the left femur treated with calcined HA-700 nanoparticles healed significantly (p < 0.001) faster than rats treated with HA-1000 or negative controls. These findings showed that spherical biogenic HA-700 NPs with a bud-like structure have the potential to stimulate both osteoconduction and bone remodeling, leading to greater bone formation potential in vivo. Plasma polymerized (PP) methyl acrylate (MA) and vinyl acetate (VA) composite thin films were deposited onto glass substrate varying MA and VA monomer concentrations. Thickness of the composite polymers is observed to vary on the MA and VA monomer ratios, where MA is found more reactive. The FESEM images of the composite polymers show better surface morphology compared to those of the homopolymers. Appearance of broad absorption bands in the FTIR spectra of polymer indicates the structural changes compared to monomer during polymerization. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry indicate that composite films are thermally more stable (up to 617 K) compared to homopolymer thin films (563 K). The current density versus voltage (J–V) characteristics of PP(MA-VA) composite films (sandwiched between aluminum electrodes) with different MA and VA ratios showed that the J values of the composite films gradually increase with elevating VA monomer and also with temperature (298–373 K). On the other hand, this value increases with decreasing the thickness of the composite films, which complies with the other studies. The conduction of the thickness-dependent composite films showed Ohmic in nature in the lower voltage region (< 10 V) while the space charge-limited conduction is found to be dominated in the higher voltage region (> 10 V) operating over the entire range of temperature. Various compositions of CNTs were incorporated into the AZ31 alloy matrix. The sintered specimens were analysed using microstructural characterization and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were conducted to investigate the impact of sintering on the processed composites. Corrosion studies were performed in a sodium chloride (NaCl) medium, and Tafel curves were plotted to assess corrosion behaviour. Agro-industrial wastes are sustainable resources that have advantages as a reinforcement for polymeric matrices. This study examined the use of banana rachis fiber (BRF) in reinforcing the recycled high-density polyethylene (rHDPE) matrix. For this purpose, polymer composites with 5–20 wt% of BRF were prepared by the extrusion process using a twin-screw extruder and followed a hot press method. The structure of rHDPE/BRF composites and their characteristic peaks of degradation were successfully identified by the Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis techniques, respectively, revealing a good dispersion of BRF in rHDPE. Differential scanning calorimetry results of the composites demonstrated that melt enthalpy decreases as the amount of BRF increases. XRD diffractograms revealed a crystallinity reduction of rHDPE due to the increase of fiber within the polymer matrix, which is reflected in the characteristic peaks' intensity decrease of HDPE. Variation in thermal and chemical properties with the addition of BRF in rHDPE was successfully evaluated in this study. Life cycle assessment for 1 kg composite production has also been evaluated. The increasing demand for natural products and biotechnological activities from bees facilitate their widespread use in food preservation and beneficial effects on humans. This study aimed to prepare and characterize the nano-capsules of Qaluiobia (PQG) governorates propolis extracted with water, ethanol and supercritical fluid-carbon dioxide at 50 °C with co-solvent. Propolis bioavailability was analyzed and introduced to prepare crackers to extend their shelf life. Nano-encapsulation was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and antioxidant activity. Ethanol and supercritical fluid-carbon dioxide (SCF-CO2) at 50 °C with ethanol as co-solvent recorded higher yield, antioxidant activities, total phenolics and total flavonoids. SCF-CO2 extracts had a higher flavonoid concentration. It was revealed that propolis nano-capsules had high-temperature stability and cytotoxic effects against the three tested human cancer cell lines (i.e. PC3, MCF7 and HePG2). The higher overall acceptability of crackers fortified with PQG was achieved with SCF-CO2 at 50 °C and ethanol extract nano-capsules, i.e. 86.57% and 86.29% respectively. The higher ability to retain antioxidant activity reduces the increase of peroxide value (PV), preventing rancidity and increasing the shelf life of crackers during the storage period. Practical application: This study can provide a suitable method for extracting bioactive compounds from propolis, and improve the biological properties and activities by nano-encapsulation, also reveals the extent of its use as a natural antioxidant and anticancer and its application in bakery products as a functional food. The objective of this research is to produce oil from the catalytic pyrolysis of waste polypropylene (WPP) using a low-cost natural catalyst. Three natural catalysts were examined, i.e. Kaolin, Hematite, and white sand. Different catalyst-to-plastic ratios were examined, i.e. 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6, and 1:8. The utilized catalysts were elementally analyzed using the XRF analysis and the surface area was analyzed by the BET multi-point method. The WPP thermal degradation behavior was investigated by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), then the generated liquid oil was analyzed using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermal cracking without a catalyst produced a yield of 70 wt% of liquid oil, and the maximum oil yield in case of using Hematite and white sand as a catalysts were 70 wt% and 68 wt%, respectively. However, the ratio of 1:2 of the Kaolin to the WPP produced the highest oil yield of 80.75 wt%, and the ratio of 1:8 of the white sand to the WPP produced the highest gas yield, i.e. 44 wt%. Using Kaolin in the catalytic pyrolysis of WPP produced oil with the lowest percentage of heavy oils, i.e. 25.98%, and the highest percentage of light oils, which is 25.37%, when compared to other catalysts such as Hematite and white sand. Kaolin has the lowest cost of oil production compared to Hematite and white sand, which is 0.28 $/kg of oil. Finally, the SA-Hex-NH reacted with formaldehyde to give a benzoxazine monomer (SA-Hex-BZ). Then, the monomer was thermally polymerized at 210 °C to produce the poly(SA-Hex-BZ). The chemical composition of SA-Hex-BZ was examined using FT-IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD), respectively, were used to examine the thermal behavior, surface morphology, and crystallinity of the SA-Hex-BZ and its PBZ polymer. Mild steel (MS) was coated by poly(SA-Hex-BZ) which was quickly prepared using spray coating and thermal curing techniques (MS). Finally, the electrochemical tests were used to evaluate the poly(SA-Hex-BZ)-coating on MS as anti-corrosion capabilities. A series of novel Er3+-doped bismuth-germanate glasses containing different tungsten concentrations with a molar composition of 97.5[(75 − x)GeO2–25Bi2O3–(x)WO3]–2Sb2O3–0.5Er2O3 (x = 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mol%) were fabricated. Their thermal properties are measured by differential scanning calorimetry. A structural investigation by Raman spectroscopy suggested that changes occurred in the glass network by WO3 incorporation. By laser excitation at 980 nm, a strong emission from Er3+ ions at 1532 nm is observed, while the WO3 addition caused changes in the emission spectra. The emission cross-section spectra of Er3+ are calculated by both McCumber and Füchtbauer–Ladenburg theories and their comparison showed these theories yielded slightly different results, but in both cases, the calculations showed that a gain signal in L-band can be achieved when 30% of the Er3+ ions are at the excited state. This work optimised the techno-functional and thermal properties of heat moisture treated Bambara groundnut starch (BGS). A central composite rotatable design (Design-Expert software v8.0.1.0) comprising two independent factors of temperature and time was used. Extracted BGS were subjected to heat-moisture treatment (HMT) at 80–120 °C for 30–90 min at different moisture levels of 15% (HMT 15-BGS), 25% (HMT 25-BGS) and 35% (HMT 35-BGS). The optimum HMT conditions for BGS were found to be 80 °C for 30 min (HMT 15), 105.74 °C for 30 min (HMT 25), and 113.16 °C for 30 min (HMT 35). The desirability values of the obtained optimum conditions were 0.63 (HMT 15) and 1.00 (HMT 25 and 35). In HMT 35-BGS, water absorption capacity was significantly affected by the quadratic effect of temperature and time. In contrast, solubility was significantly affected by the linear effect of time and the quadratic effect of temperature. Temperature and treatment time had no significant effect (p ≥ 0.05) on the differential scanning calorimetry thermal properties of HMT 15, 25 and 35-BGS. Scanning electron micrographs of optimised BGS showed round and oval-shaped starch granules ranging from 4.2 to 4.7 mm (width) and 10 μm for length. Unmodified and optimised HMT–BGS showed characteristic FTIR bands linked with common starches. The newly synthesized nanocatalyst effectively catalyzed the reaction between different aryl aldehydes, malononitrile, different acetophenones and ammonium acetate in solvent-free conditions and they were converted into 2-amino-3-cyanopyridine derivatives with high efficiency. The reaction showed advantages such as simplicity, high stability, environmental friendliness, excellent efficiency and short time. The effect of thermal and shear histories on the crystallization rate of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) was studied. As with other crystalline polymers, the shear history greatly affected the crystallization rate when the shear rate was beyond a critical value, i.e., the inverse of the Rouse relaxation time. Even after the formation of extended chain crystals, spherulite texture was clearly discernable. It grew from certain points on the extended chain crystals. Consequently, a row of spherulites appeared along the flow direction. The resin temperature in the molten state was also significant. When the sample was heated to 170 °C, which is beyond the main melting peak in the differential scanning calorimetry curve, unmolten crystals did not affect the linear viscoelastic properties. They acted as effective nucleating agents for the rest of the polymer during cooling. Therefore, the shear history hardly affected the crystallization rate and the number of spherulites. Little is known about the molecular mechanisms of ceramide-mediated cellular signaling. We examined the effects of palmitoyl ceramide (C16-ceramide) and stearoyl ceramide (C18-ceramide) on the phase behavior of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) and 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (POPE) using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS). As previously published, the presence of ceramides increased the lamellar gel-to-lamellar liquid crystalline (Lβ–Lα) phase transition temperature of POPC and POPE and decreased the Lα-to-inverted hexagonal (Lα–HII) phase transition temperature of POPE. Interestingly, despite an ~ 30° difference in the main phase transition temperatures of POPC and POPE, the Lβ–Lα phase transition temperatures were very close between POPC/C18-ceramide and POPE/C18-ceramide and were near physiological temperature. A comparison of the results of C16-ceramide in published and our own results with those of C18-ceramide indicates that increase of the carbon chain length of ceramide from 16 to 18 and/or the small difference of ceramide content in the membrane dramatically change the phase transition temperature of POPC and POPE to near physiological temperature. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) represents a straightforward additive manufacturing technique applied in the medical sector for personalized patient treatment. However, frequently processed biopolymers lack sufficient thermal stability to be used as auxiliary devices such as surgical guides. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dimensional accuracy of experimental biocopolyester blends with improved thermal characteristics after printing, annealing and sterilization. A total of 160 square specimens and 40 surgical guides for oral implant placement were printed. One subgroup of each material (n = 10) underwent thermal annealing before both subgroups were subjected to steam sterilization (134 °C; 5 min). Specimens were digitized and the deviation from the original file was calculated. The thermal behavior was analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. A one-way ANOVA and t-tests were applied for statistical analyses (p < 0.05). All biocopolyester blends showed warpage during steam sterilization. However, the material modification with mineral fillers (21–32 wt%) and nucleating agents in combination with thermal annealing showed a significantly reduced warpage of printed square specimens. Geometry of the printing object seemed to affect dimensional accuracy, as printed surgical guides showed less distortion between the groups. Insufficient homogeneity is one of the pressing problems in nanocomposites' production as it largely impairs the properties of materials with relatively high filler concentration. Within this work, it is demonstrated how selected mixing techniques (magnetic mixer stirring, calendaring and microfluidization) affect filler distribution in poly(dimethylsiloxane)-graphene based nanocomposites and, consequently, their properties. The differences were assessed via imaging and thermal techniques, i.a. Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. As microfluidization proved to provide the best homogenization, it was used to prepare nanocomposites of different filler concentration, whose structural and thermal properties were investigated. The results show that the concentration of graphene significantly affects polymer chain mobility, grain sizes, defect density and cross-linking level. The demand for bacterial nanocellulose is expected to rise in the coming years due to its wide usability in many applications. Hence, there is a continuing need to screen soil samples from various sources to isolate a strain with a high capacity for bacterial nanocellulose production. Bacillus sp. strain SEE-12, which was isolated from a soil sample collected from Barhiem, Menoufia governorate, Egypt, displayed high BNC production under submerged fermentation. Bacillus sp. strain SEE-12 was identified as Bacillus tequilensis strain SEE-12. In static cultures, BNC was obtained as a layer grown in the air liquid interface of the fermentation medium. The response surface methodology was used to optimise the process parameters. The highest BNC production (22.8 g/L) was obtained using 5 g/L peptone, 5 g/L yeast extract, 50%, v/v Cantaloupe juice, 5 g/L Na2HPO4, 1.5 g/L citric acid, pH 5, medium volume of 100 mL/250 mL conical flask, inoculum size 5%, v/v, temperature 37 °C and incubation time 6 days. Some of the best nucleating agents in nature are ice-nucleating proteins, which boost ice growth better than any other material. They can induce immersion freezing of supercooled water only a few degrees below 0 °C. An open question is whether this ability also extends to the deposition mode, i.e., to water vapor. In this work, we used three proteins, apoferritin, InaZ (ice nucleation active protein Z), and myoglobin, of which the first two are classified as ice-nucleating proteins for the immersion freezing mode. We studied the ice nucleation ability of these proteins by differential scanning calorimetry (immersion freezing) and by environmental scanning electron microscopy (deposition freezing). Our data show that InaZ crystallizes water directly from the vapor phase, while apoferritin first condenses water in the supercooled state, and subsequently crystallizes it, just as myoglobin, which is unable to nucleate ice. The nucleation behavior of water is crucial in many fields, spanning meteorology, glaciology, biology, and astrophysics. We report observations suggesting an effect of diffusion kinetics in water on the heterogeneous immersion/contact mode nucleation temperature distribution of ice. We performed differential scanning calorimetry analyses of repeated freeze/thaw cycles and investigated the effect of several variables on the regularity of the nucleation temperature distributions obtained. We observed that the thawing temperature and residence time above 0 °C affect the width of the measured distributions. We explain the observed phenomena according to the diffusion behavior of an external nucleator. Specifically, conditions of enhanced diffusion of the nucleator translated into broader, more scattered distributions, while conditions of limited diffusion translated into narrower, more regular distributions. The emergence of multidrug resistance coupled with shrinking antibiotic pipelines has increased the demand of antimicrobials with novel mechanisms of action. Therefore, researchers across the globe are striving to develop new antimicrobial substances to alleviate the pressure on conventional antibiotic therapies. Host-Defence Peptides (HDPs) and their derivatives are emerging as effective therapeutic agents against microbial resistance. In this study, five analogs (DP1-5) of the N-terminal (N-15) fragment of CATH-2 were designed based on the delicate balance between various physicochemical properties such as charge, aliphatic character, amphipathicity and hydrophobicity. By means of in-silico and in-vitro studies a novel peptide (DP1) with the sequence "RFGRFLRKILRFLKK" was found to be more effective and less toxic than the N-terminal CATH-2 peptide. Circular dichroism spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry were applied for structural insights. Antimicrobial, haemolytic, and cytotoxic activities were also assessed. The resulting peptide was characterized by low cytotoxicity, low haemolytic activity, and efficient anti-microbial activity. Structurally, it displayed strong helical properties irrespective of the solvent environment and was stable in membrane-mimicking environments. This study aims to deliver Tazarotene (TZR) in a controlled manner to reduce adverse effects in the form of a microsponge-based gel. It adopts the methodology of a similar study by the undersigned authors with respect to the drug Clindamycin. Under both studies, the methodology used is emulsion solvent diffusion. Accordingly, we altered the concentrations of polymer and emulsifier to generate four formulations of TZR microsponges. Additionally, we used two types of emulsifiers and two types of solvents to develop two further microsponge formulations. We then studied the physical properties of each formulation, as well as drug-polymer interactions. Echoing findings from our prior study of Clindamycin, we found that microsponge formulations coded by T1 and T3 had superior production yield and entrapment efficiency, and their particle size was suitable for dermal application. As in the prior Clindamycin study, each of the T1 and T3 microsponge formulations were incorporated into a Carbopol gel and evaluated in vitro. The optimal formulation was found to be the microsponge formulation gel T8, which released 87.63% of TZR over 12 h. Various methods of evaluating a humectant's moisture retention have unique mechanisms. Hence, for designing advanced or efficient ingredients of cosmetic products, a clear understanding of differences among methods is required. The aim of this study was to analyze the moisture-retention capacity of glycerin, a common ingredient in cosmetic products. Specifically, this study applied gravimetric analysis, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to examine the evaporation of glycerin solutions of different concentrations. The results revealed that the moisture-retention capacity of glycerin increased with the glycerin concentration from 0 to 60 wt%, and glycerin at concentration of 60–70 wt% did not exhibit weight change during the evaporation process. When the glycerin concentration exceeded 70 wt%, moisture sorption occurred in the glycerin solution. Furthermore, the results revealed a deviation between the evaporation rates measured using gravimetric analysis and those measured using TEWL analysis. However, normalizing the results of these analyses yielded the relative evaporation rates to water, which were consistent between these two analyses. DSC thermograms further confirmed the consistent results and identified two hydrated water microstructures (nonfreezable water and free water) in the glycerin solutions, which explained why the measured evaporation rate decreased with the glycerin concentration. Aluminum particles are of significant interest in enhancing the energy release performance of explosives. One of the major impediments to their use is that Al2O3 shell significantly decreases overall performance. To address this issue, we investigate creating aluminum particles with a glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) coating to improve their reactivity while retaining their energy content. We found that the aluminum particles were coated with a GAP layer of thickness around 8.5 nm. The coated aluminum particles were compared to non-coated powder by the corresponding reactivity parameters obtained from simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, coupled with mass spectral and infrared spectral analyses. Besides, the comparison on the energy content was also conducted based on P–t tests and a laser-induced air shock from energetic materials (LASEM) technique. It was found that GAP shifted the oxidation onset of aluminum particles to a lower temperature by ~ 10 °C. Besides, the oxidation activation energy of aluminum particles was also reduced by ~ 15 kJ mol−1. In return, aluminum particles reduced the activation energy of the second stage decomposition of the GAP by 276 kJ mol−1. And due to the synergistic effect between aluminum and GAP, the decomposition products of GAP were prone to be oxycarbide species rather than carbonitride species. In addition, the P–t test showed the peak pressure and pressurization rate of GAP coated aluminum particles were separately 1.4 times and 1.9 times as large as those of non-coated aluminum particles. Furthermore, the LASEM experiment suggested the shock wave velocity of the GAP coated aluminum particles was larger than that of non-coated aluminum particles, and the largest velocity difference for them could be 0.6 km s−1. This study suggests after coating by GAP, the aluminum particles possess enhanced reaction performance, which shows potential application value in the fields of aluminized explosives and other energetic fields. During application, energetic materials may suffer different temperature environmental stimulation. In order to study the influence of temperature environmental on performance of HNIW/FOX-7 based PBXs, HNIW/FOX-7 based PBX modeling powders and PBX columns were treated by LT (low temperature), HT (high temperature), HLC (high-low temperature cycle) and HLS (high-low temperature shock). Then scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared spectra (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to study the variation of PBX modeling powders after LT, HT, HLC and HLS treatments; in addition, the mass, size and mechanical properties of PBX columns were characterized after different temperature adaptability treatments as well. The results indicate that the change ratios of mass and size of HNIW/FOX-7 based PBX columns are less than 1%, illustrating that mass and size of PBX columns are at acceptable level after different temperature adaptability treatments. The unevenness degree of the surface of PBX modeling powders followed the order of HLC > HT > LT > HLS, which agrees well with mass loss order. Moreover, IR and XRD results indicated that the molecular structure and crystal form of HNIW and FOX-7 did not change after different temperature adaptability treatments. Additionally, thermal stabilities of PBX modeling powders are decreased after different temperature adaptability treatments, among which HLS has the largest influence on HNIW/FOX-based PBX modeling powders. The compression strengths and elastic moduli of HNIW/FOX-based PBX columns are enhanced after different temperature adaptability treatments, among which the strength of PBX columns after HLC has the maximum increase, indicating that HLC has more significant effect on mechanical property. Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites can potentially be used in electrochemical devices, such as batteries and fuel cells. In this study, the structure and phase transition temperatures of the organic–inorganic material [NH3(CH2)5NH3]CdCl4 crystal were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. From the nuclear magnetic resonance results, the crystallographic configurations of 1H, 13C, and 14N in the cation changed at temperatures close to TC1 (336 K), whereas that of 113Cd in the anion shows significant changes at temperatures close to TC1 and TC2 (417 K). The activation energy, Ea, values for 1H and 13C obtained from the spin–lattice relaxation time, T1ρ, below and above TC1 were evaluated, where the Ea value for 13C was more flexible at low temperatures than at high temperatures. In addition, the effect on molecular motion was effective at high temperatures. The phase transition at 336 K was associated with the change in the N–H···Cl bond due to the change in the coordination geometry of Cl around Cd in the CdCl6 anion. We investigate the effect of bis(imino)pyridine (BIP) ligands in guiding self-assembly of semiconducting CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) into three-dimensional multi-layered shells with diameters spanning the entire mesoscopic range, from 200 nm to 2 μm. The assembly process is directed by guest–host interactions between the BIP ligands and a thermotropic liquid crystal (LC), with the latter's phase transition driving the process. Characterization of the shell structures, through scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, demonstrates that the average shell diameter depends on the BIP structure, and that changing one functional group in the chemical scaffold allows systematic tuning of shell sizes across the entire range. Differential scanning calorimetry confirms a relationship between shell sizes and the thermodynamic perturbation of the BIP molecules to the LC phase transition temperature, allowing analytical modeling of shell assembly energetics. This novel mechanism to controllably tune shell sizes over the entire mesoscale via one standard protocol is a significant development for research on in situ cargo/drug delivery platforms using nano-assembled structures. The present study was carried out to develop cisplatin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (CCNP) and cisplatin-loaded chitosan nanoparticle surface linked to rituximab (mAbCCNP) as targeted delivery formulations. The two formulations (CCNP and mAbCCNP) exhibited significant physicochemical properties. The zetapotential (ZP) values of CCNP and mAbCCNP were 30.50 ± 5.64 and 26.90 ± 9.09 mV, respectively; while their particle sizes were 308.10 ± 1.10 and 349.40 ± 3.20 z.d.nm, respectively. The poly dispersity index (PDI) of CCNP was 0.257 ± 0.030 (66.6% PDI), while that of mAbCCNP was 0.444 ± 0.007 (57.60% PDI). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that CCNP had endothermic peaks at temperatures ranging from 135.50 to 157.69 °C. A sharp exothermic peak was observed at 95.79 °C, and an endothermic peak was observed at 166.60 °C. The XRD study on CCNP and mAbCCNP revealed distinct peaks at 2θ. Four peaks at 35.38°, 37.47°, 49.29°, and 59.94° corresponded to CCNP, while three distinct peaks at 36.6°, 49.12°, and 55.08° corresponded to mAbCCNP. The in vitro release of cisplatin from nanoparticles followed zero order kinetics in both CCNP and mAbCCNP. The profile for CCNP showed 43.80% release of cisplatin in 6 h (R2 = 0.9322), indicating linearity of release with minimal deviation. However, the release profile of mAbCCNP showed 22.52% release in 4 h (R2 = 0.9416), indicating linearity with sustained release. In vitro cytotoxicity studies on MCF-7 ATCC human breast cancer cell line showed that CCNP exerted good cytotoxicity, with IC50 of 4.085 ± 0.065 µg/mL. However, mAbCCNP did not elicit any cytotoxic effect. At a dose of 4.00 µg/mL cisplatin induced early apoptosis and late apoptosis, chromatin condensation, while it produced secondary necrosis at a dose of 8.00 µg/mL. Potential delivery system for cisplatin CCNP and mAbCCNP were successfully formulated. The aim of the present study was to formulate clindamycin (CLN) as a microsponge based gel to release the drug in a controlled manner and reduce the side effects in the treatment of acne. Since this method requires poor water solubility of the drug to be loaded in particles, therefore, conversion of the hydrochloride salt to free base was done. By using an emulsion solvent diffusion method, we made six different formulations of microsponges containing CLN-free base by changing the proportions of polymer, emulsifier and the pH of the external phase. These formulations were studied for physical characterization and for drug- polymer interactions. The physical characterization showed that microsponge formulations coded by C5, C6 resulted in a better loading efficiency and production yield and their particle size was less than 30 µm. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the microsponges porous and spherical. C5, C6 microsponge formulation was prepared as gel in Carbopol and in vitro evaluated. The microsponge formulation gel C8 was found to be optimized. C8 released 90.38% of drug over 12 h and showed viscosity 20,157 ± 38 cp, pH of 6.3 ± 0.09 and drug content of 99.64 ± 0.04%. The article presents the thermal and physical properties of PMMA composite films with the addition of Nb2O5 nanoparticles. The addition of nanoparticles to PMMA mainly influenced the optical transmission and glass transition temperature of composite films compared to pure PMMA. It is clearly visible in the results of the conducted ellipsometric and differential scanning calorimetry tests. X-ray studies showed that the heat treatment of the samples resulted in the ordering of the polymer structure (flattening of the polymer chains). Examining the surface of the samples with scanning electron microscopy, it can be seen that Nb2O5 nanoparticles formed unusual, branched formations resembling "snowflakes". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) block copolymer poly(2-hydroxybutyrate-b-3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(2HB-b-3HB)] was previously synthesized using engineered Escherichia coli expressing a chimeric PHA synthase PhaCAR with monomer sequence-regulating capacity. In the present study, the physical properties of the block copolymer and its relevant random copolymer P(2HB-ran-3HB) were evaluated. Stress–strain tests on the P(88 mol% 2HB-b-3HB) film showed an increasing stress value during elongation up to 393%. In addition, the block copolymer film exhibited slow contraction behavior after elongation, indicating that P(2HB-b-3HB) is an elastomer-like material. In contrast, the P(92 mol% 2HB-ran-3HB) film, which was stretched up to 692% with nearly constant stress, was stretchable but not elastic. The differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that the P(2HB-b-3HB) contained the amorphous P(2HB) phase and the crystalline P(3HB) phase, whereas P(2HB-ran-3HB) was wholly amorphous. Therefore, the elasticity of P(2HB-b-3HB) can be attributed to the presence of the crystalline P(3HB) phase and a noncovalent crosslinked structure by the crystals. The high binding affinities and specificities of antibodies have led to their use as drugs and biosensors. Single-domain VHH antibodies exhibit high specificity and affinity but have higher stability and solubility than conventional antibodies as they are single-domain proteins. In this work, based on physicochemical measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we have gained insight that will facilitate rational design of single-chain VHH antibodies. We first assessed two homologous VHH antibodies by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC); one had a high (64.8 °C) and the other a low (58.6 °C) melting temperature. We then generated a series of the variants of the low stability antibody and analyzed their thermal stabilities by DSC and characterized their structures through MD simulations. We found that a single mutation that resulted in 8.2 °C improvement in melting temperature resulted in binding affinity an order of magnitude lower than the parent antibody, likely due to a shift of conformational space explored by the single-chain VHH antibody. These results suggest that the delicate balance among conformational stability, binding capability, and conformational space explored by antibodies must be considered in design of fully functional single-chain VHH antibodies. This study aimed to develop a poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) material that has a low melting point while maintaining the deformation ability. The new PCL (abbreviated as 4b45/2b20) was fabricated by mixing two types of PCL with different molecular weights, numbers of branches, and physical properties. To investigate the melting point, crystallization temperature, elastic modulus, and elongation at break for 4b45/2b20 and three commercially available masks, differential scanning calorimetry and tensile tests were performed. The melting point of 4b45/2b20 was 46.0 °C, and that of the commercially available masks was approximately 56.0 °C (55.7 °C–56.5 °C). The elastic modulus at 60 °C of 4b45/2b20 was significantly lower than the commercially available masks (1.1 ± 0.3 MPa and 46.3 ± 5.4 MPa, p = 0.0357). In addition, the elongation at break of 4b45/2b20 were significantly larger than the commercially available masks (275.2 ± 25.0% and 216.0 ± 15.2%, p = 0.0347). The crystallization temperature of 4b45/2b20 (22.1 °C) was clinically acceptable and no significant difference was found in the elastic modulus at 23 °C (253.7 ± 24.3 MPa and 282.0 ± 44.3 MPa, p = 0.4). As a shape memory-based thermoset material, 4b45/2b20 has a low melting point and large deformation ability. In addition, the crystallization temperature and strength are within the clinically acceptable standards. Because masks made using the new PCL material are formed with less pressure on the face than commercially available masks, it is a promising material for making a radiotherapy mask that can reduce the burden on patients. We employ temperature- and pressure-dependent dielectric spectroscopy, as well as differential scanning calorimetry, to characterize benzophenone and the singly-substituted ortho-bromobenzophenone derivative in the liquid and glass states, and analyze the results in terms of the molecular conformations reported for these molecules. Despite the significantly higher mass of the brominated derivative, its dynamic and calorimetric glass transition temperatures are only ten degrees higher than those of benzophenone. The kinetic fragility index of the halogenated molecule is lower than that of the parent compound, and is found to decrease with increasing pressure. By a detailed analysis of the dielectric loss spectra, we provide evidence for the existence of a Johari–Goldstein (JG) relaxation in both compounds, thus settling the controversy concerning the possible lack of a JG process in benzophenone and confirming the universality of this dielectric loss feature in molecular glass-formers. Both compounds also display an intramolecular relaxation, whose characteristic timescale appears to be correlated with that of the cooperative structural relaxation associated with the glass transition. The limited molecular flexibility of ortho-bromobenzophenone allows identifying the intramolecular relaxation as the inter-enantiomeric conversion between two isoenergetic conformers of opposite chirality, which only differ in the sign of the angle between the brominated aryl ring and the coplanar phenyl-ketone subunit. The observation by dielectric spectroscopy of a similar relaxation also in liquid benzophenone indicates that the inter-enantiomer conversion between the two isoenergetic helicoidal ground-state conformers of opposite chirality occurs via a transition state characterized by a coplanar phenyl-ketone moiety. The elusive crystal structure of the so-called 'antimonic acid' has been investigated by means of robust and state-of-the-art techniques. The synergic results of solid-state magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and a combined Rietveld refinement from synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data reveal that this compound contains two types of protons, in a pyrochlore-type structure of stoichiometric formula (H3O)1.20(7)H0.77(9)Sb2O6. Some protons belong to heavily delocalized H3O+ subunits, while some H+ are directly bonded to the oxygen atoms of the covalent framework of the pyrochlore structure, with O–H distances close to 1 Å. A proton diffusion mechanism is proposed relying on percolation pathways determined by bond-valence energy landscape analysis. X-ray absorption spectroscopy results corroborate the structural data around Sb5+ ions at short-range order. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry endorsed the conclusions on the water content within antimonic acid. Aim of the present study is to analyze thermal events occurring during cryoablation. Different bovine liver samples underwent freezing cycles at different cooling rate (from 0.0075 to 25 K/min). Ice onset temperature and specific latent heat capacity of the ice formation process were measured according to differential scanning calorimetry signals. A computational model of the thermal events occurring during cryoablation was compiled using Neumann's analytical solution. Latent heat (#1 = 139.8 ± 7.4 J/g, #2 = 147.8 ± 7.9 J/g, #3 = 159.0 ± 4.1 J/g) of all liver samples was independent of the ice onset temperature, but linearly dependent on the water content. Ice onset temperature was proportional to the logarithm of the cooling rate in the range 5 ÷ 25 K/min (#3a = − 12.2 °C, #3b = − 16.2 °C, #3c = − 6.6 °C at 5K/min; #3a = − 16.5 °C, #3b = − 19.3 °C, #3c = − 11.6 °C at 25 K/min). Ice onset temperature was associated with both the way in which the heat involved into the phase transition was delivered and with the thermal gradient inside the tissue. Ice onset temperature should be evaluated in the early phase of the ablation to tailor cryoenergy delivery. The physical properties of the organic–inorganic hybrid crystals having the formula [NH3(CH2)3NH3]ZnX4 (X = Cl, Br) were investigated. The phase transition temperatures (TC; 268K for Cl and 272K for Br) of the two crystals bearing different halogen atoms in their skeletons were determined through differential scanning calorimetry. The thermodynamic properties of the two crystals were investigated through thermogravimetric analysis. The structural dynamics, particularly the role of the [NH3(CH2)3NH3] cation, were probed through 1H and 13C magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy as a function of temperature. The 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts did not show any changes near TC. In addition, the 1H spin–lattice relaxation time (T1ρ) varied with temperature, whereas the 13C T1ρ values remained nearly constant at different temperatures. The T1ρ values of the atoms in [NH3(CH2)3NH3]ZnCl4 were higher than those in [NH3(CH2)3NH3]ZnBr4. The observed differences in the structural dynamics obtained from the chemical shifts and T1ρ values of the two compounds can be attributed to the differences in the bond lengths and halogen atoms. The collective behavior of DNA is important for exploring new types of bacteria in the means of detection, which is greatly interested in the understanding of interactions between DNAs in living systems. How they self-organize themselves is a physical common phenomenon for broad ranges of thermodynamic systems. In this work, the equilibrium phase diagrams of charged chiral rods (fd viruses) at low ionic strengths (below a few mM) are provided to demonstrate both replicas of (or self-organized) twist orders and replica symmetry breaking near high concentration glass-states. By varying the ionic strengths, it appears that a critical ionic strength is obtained below 1–2 mM salt, where the twist and freezing of nematic domains diverge. Also, the microscopic relaxation is revealed by the ionic strength-dependent effective Debye screening length. At a fixed low ionic strength, the local orientations of twist are shown by two different length scales of optical pitch, in the chiral-nematic N* phase and the helical domains H D , for low and high concentration, respectively. RSB occurs in several cases of crossing phase boundary lines in the equilibrium phase diagram of DNA-rod concentration and ionic strength, including long-time kinetic arrests in the presence of twist orders. The different pathways of PATH I, II and III are due to many-body effects of randomized orientations for charged fd rods undergoing long-range electrostatic interactions in bulk elastic medium. In addition, the thermal stability are shown for chiral pitches of the N* phase and the abnormal cooling process of a specific heat in a structural glass. Here, the concentration-driven twist-effects of charged DNA rods are explored using various experimental methods involving image-time correlation, microscopic dynamics in small angle dynamic light scattering, optical activity in second harmonic generation, and differential scanning calorimetry for the glass state. Organic inner salt structures are ideal backbones for heat-resistant energetic materials and systematic studies towards the thermal properties of energetic organic inner salt structures are crucial to their applications. Herein, we report a comparative thermal research of two energetic organic inner salts with different tetraazapentalene backbones. Detailed thermal decomposition behaviors and kinetics were investigated through differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis (DSC-TG) methods, showing that the thermal stability of the inner salts is higher than most of the traditional heat-resistant energetic materials. Further studies towards the thermal decomposition mechanism were carried out through condensed-phase thermolysis/Fourier-transform infrared (in-situ FTIR) spectroscopy and the combination of differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (DSC-TG-MS-FTIR) techniques. The experiment and calculation results prove that the arrangement of the inner salt backbones has great influence on the thermal decompositions of the corresponding energetic materials. The weak N4-N5 bond in "y-" pattern tetraazapentalene backbone lead to early decomposition process and the "z-" pattern tetraazapentalene backbone exhibits more concentrated decomposition behaviors. This paper reports the crystallization kinetics of (Cu60Zr25Ti15)99.3Nb0.7 bulk metallic glass under isothermal conditions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been employed for isothermal annealing at ten different temperatures prior to the onset of crystallization (To) temperature. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy have been used to confirm the amorphous structure of the as cast sample. Crystallized volume fractions (x) are calculated from the exothermic peaks of DSC scans. Crystallized volume fractions (x) against time show sigmoidal type of curves as well as the curves become steeper at higher annealing temperatures. Continuous heating transformation diagram has been simulated to understand the stability of the bulk metallic glass. Crystallization kinetics parameters are calculated using Arrhenius and Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equations. Activation energy (Ea) and Avrami exponential factor (n) have exhibited strong correlation with crystallized volume fraction (x). The average activation energy for isothermal crystallization is found to be 330 ± 30 kJ/mol by Arrhenius equation. Nucleation activation energy (Enucleation) is found to be higher than that of growth activation energy (Egrowth). Protein stability is a widely studied topic, there are still aspects however that need addressing. In this paper we examined the effects of multiple proline substitutions into loop regions of the kinetically stable proteinase K-like serine protease VPR, using the thermostable structural homologue AQUI as a template. Four locations for proline substitutions were chosen to imitate the structure of AQUI. Variants were produced and characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), circular dichroism (CD), steady state fluorescence, acrylamide fluorescence quenching and thermal inactivation experiments. The final product VPRΔC_N3P/I5P/N238P/T265P was greatly stabilized which was achieved without any noticeable detrimental effects to the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme. This stabilization seems to be derived from the conformation restrictive properties of the proline residue in its ability to act as an anchor point and strengthen pre-existing interactions within the protein and allowing for these interactions to prevail when thermal energy is applied to the system. In addition, the results underline the importance of the synergy between distant local protein motions needed to result in stabilizing effects and thus giving an insight into the nature of the stability of VPR, its unfolding landscape and how proline residues can infer kinetic stability onto protein structures. The freezing of aqueous solutions and reciprocal distribution of ice and a freeze-concentrated solution (FCS) are poorly understood in spite of their importance in fields ranging from biotechnology and life sciences to geophysics and climate change. Using an optical cryo-miscroscope and differential scanning calorimetry, we demonstrate that upon cooling of citric acid and sucrose solutions a fast freezing process results in a continuous ice framework (IF) and two freeze-concentrated solution regions of different concentrations, FCS1 and FCS2. The FCS1 is maximally freeze-concentrated and interweaves with IF. The less concentrated FCS2 envelops the entire IF/FCS1.We find that upon further cooling, the FCS1 transforms to glass, whereas the slow freezing of FCS2 continues until it is terminated by a FCS2-glass transition. We observe the resumed slow freezing of FCS2 upon subsequent warming. The net thermal effect of the resumed freezing and a reverse glass-FCS1 transition produces the Ttr2-transition which before has only been observed upon warming of frozen hydrocarbon solutions and which nature has remained misunderstood for decades. Here we present a set of measurements using Differential Scanning Fluorimetry (DSF) as an inexpensive, high throughput screening method to investigate the folding of silk protein molecules as they abandon their first native melt conformation, dehydrate and denature into their final solid filament conformation. Our first data and analyses comparing silks from spiders, mulberry and wild silkworms as well as reconstituted 'silk' fibroin show that DSF can provide valuable insights into details of silk denaturation processes that might be active during spinning. We conclude that this technique and technology offers a powerful and novel tool to analyse silk protein transitions in detail by allowing many changes to the silk solutions to be tested rapidly with microliter scale sample sizes. Magnesium-based bulk metallic glasses (BMG) have potential in applications ranging from biomedical to sports equipment and the Mg-Cu-Y system offers some of the most promising alloys. Phase relations and ternary solubility of the binary and ternary compounds of this system have been experimentally investigated. The Isothermal section of Mg-Cu-Y system at 673 K for the entire composition range has been constructed. Phase relations in the Cu-rich (>66 at.% Cu) region of the Mg-Cu-Y system has been determined for the first time. The homogeneity range of three ternary compounds has been determined. Solidifications behavior of several key alloys have been discussed based on the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments and thermodynamic calculations. Extensive analysis of the DSC curves has been carried out to relate them to the corresponding phase transformation reactions and temperatures.
