The monitoring of economic activities is of great significance for understanding regional economic development level and policymaking. As the carrier of economic activities, land resource is an indispensable production factor of economic development, and economic growth leads to increased demand for land as well as changes in land utilization form. As an important means of earth observation, remote-sensing technology can obtain the information of land use and land cover change (LUCC) related to economic activities. This study proposes a method for analysing regional economic situations based on remote-sensing technology, from which LUCC information extraction, sensitivity factor selection, model construction and accuracy evaluation were implemented. This approach was validated with experiments in Zhoushan City, China. The results show that the economic statistical index is most sensitive to the construction land area, and the average correlation coefficient between the actual data and the predicted data is 0.949, and the average of mean relative error is 14.21%. Therefore, this paper suggests that LUCC could be utilised as an explanatory indicator for estimating economic development at the regional level, and the potential applications of remotely-sensed image in economic activity monitoring are worth pursuing.

In this paper, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) roots grown in soils with and without contamination from emission of a plant steel were analyzed for Fe and Mn, as well as the shoots and needles with and lacking pollution. The aim was to assess the content of Fe and Mn in soils under given conditions, and the interaction between pine plant and soil in terms of metal accumulation in the fine roots, annual shoots, and annual needles. The iron content in the soil of polluted areas does not contrast with its control amount. Conversely, the iron content in fine pine roots under contamination conditions is 2.1–4.4 times higher than the control values. There were no significant excesses of the manganese content in the soil in polluted conditions compared to the control, but its content in the 0–20 cm soil layer is 27–32 times higher than the background concentrations. The iron contentment in belowground (fine roots) and aboveground (annual shoots and needles) parts of pine trees in a context of contamination is higher than the control values (2.1–4.4 and 1.50–1.54 times, respectively). The manganese content in fine pine roots under contamination conditions is 2.8–10.7 times less than in control, while its content in shoots and needles is higher (2.23–2.76 times) in comparison with the control. Based on the values of the biological accumulation and migration coefficients, what in each case slighter than one, for Scots pine the iron represent not an element that actively accumulates. Nevertheless, for manganese, this stock model is valid only for fine roots, whereas under the contaminated environment, the metal mobility steepen, and the migration pattern shifts towards increased manganese accumulation in the aboveground part of pine trees.

This paper explores gold nanoparticle (GNP) modified copper oxide nanowires(CuO NWs)based electrode grown on copper foil for non-enzymatic glucose detection in a wide linear ranging up to 31.06 mM, and 44.36 mM at 0.5 M NaOH and 1 M NaOH concentrations. The proposed electrode can be used to detect a very low glucose concentration of 0.3 µM with a high linearity range of 44.36mM and sensitivity of 1591.44 µA mM−1 cm−2. The electrode is fabricated by first synthesizing Cu (OH)2 NWs on a copper foil by chemical etching method and then heat treatment is performed to convert Cu (OH)2 NWs into CuO NWs. The GNPs are deposited on CuO NWs to enhance the effective surface-to-volume ratio of the electrode with improved catalytic activity. The surface morphology has been investigated by XRD, XPS, FE-SEM and HR-TEM analysis. The proposed sensor is expected to detect low-level of glucose in urine, and saliva. At the same time, it can also be used to measure extremely high sugar levels (i.e. hyperglycemia) of ~ 806.5454 mg/dl. The proposed sensor is also capable of detecting glucose after multiple bending of the GNP modified CuO NWs electrode. The proposed device is also used to detect the blood sugar level in human being and it is found that this sensor’s result is highly accurate and reliable.

In this paper, the acoustic impedance property has been employed to predict the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) of pure metals and alloys. Novel algorithms were developed, depending on three experimentally measured parameters, and programmed in a MATLAB code. The measured parameters are longitudinal wave velocity of the metal, density, and crystal structure. 19-samples were considered in the study and divided into 3-groups according to their crystal structure; 7-FCC, 6-BCC, and 6-HCB. X-ray diffraction was used to examine the crystal structure of each sample of each group, while longitudinal wave velocity and metals’ density were measured experimentally. A comparison between mechanical properties predicted by the model and the ASTM standards was done to investigate the validity of the model. Furthermore, predicted stress–strain curves were compared with corresponding curves in the pieces literature as an additional validation check. The results revealed the excellence of the model with 85–99% prediction accuracy. The study also proved that if metals are grouped according to their crystal structure, a relation between UTS, YS, and modulus of elasticity (E) properties and wave pressure transmission coefficient (Tr) could be formulated.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is a climate resilient crop having superior nutritional profile compared to other cereal grains and may help to ensure future food security. Commercial cultivation of quinoa is dependent upon availability of quality seed. Adoption of Dry Chain Technology: drying before storage and maintaining seed dryness through hermetic packaging, may prevent quinoa seed deterioration. Quinoa seeds were dried to 8, 10, 12 and 14% initial seed moisture content (SMC) and stored in conventional (Paper, polypropylene, cloth and jute) and hermetic Super Bags for 6, 12 and 18 months. Seed stored in Super Bag at 8% initial SMC maintained low seed moisture and higher germination. Total soluble sugars and α-amylase activity were higher while EC, reducing sugars and MDA contents were low for the seeds stored in hermetic bag at 8% initial SMC. Seed stored in traditional packaging materials irrespective of initial seed moisture contents, gained moisture due to ambient high relative humidity which resulted in seed deterioration as indicated by increased reducing sugars, MDA contents and seed leachates conductivity and reduced vigor, viability, soluble sugars. The Dry Chain Technology preserves seed quality by maintaining low seed moisture and reducing deteriorative physiological and biochemical changes in the quinoa seed.

In this paper, we introduce a non-invasive optical method, named Paraxial Self-Reference Interferometry (PSRI) for thickness measurement of liquid films. The method can be used for thin or thick layers (from μm to mm) of solids or liquids, with a high precision. The method is first applied to solid plates with known thickness and is verified to be accurate. Then we use it for the thickness measurement of liquid films in two experiments. The first experiment is spin coating and the second is dip coating. In both experiments, the results are in agreement with theoretical and experimental results of previous works. In the dip coating experiment, the Landau-Levich-Derjaguin law (LLD) is observed in low capillary numbers, and a deviation from this law due to gravity is seen in higher capillary numbers. The thinning due to the drainage is also observed and is consistent with theoretical predictions.

This paper presents an impact of hydro-meteorological extreme events and urban catchment to water quality in small rivers in Białystok (Poland). The results from a five-year study have taken into account droughts, continuous precipitation, and storm precipitation causing flash floods. Extreme hydro-meteorological events has a different impact on the physical and chemical parameters of water. It was found that the largest change in water quality occurs on the 2nd day after the rainfall and changed concentration of some chemical parameters persists for a long time. The majority but, what’s important, not all of them are diluted after floods and concentrated after droughts. Flash flooding results in a large increase concentrations of DOC and selected forms of phosphorus. Higher values of EC, Eh, Mg2+, HCO3-, Cl-, SiO32-, NO3-N, TN were observed during drought compared to the average values from 2014–2018. A high degree of naturalness of the river valley and increased water retention results in a decreased concentration of NH4+-N, DOC and phosphorus forms. The buffer zone plays an important role in limiting the inflow of pollutants and nutrients from the catchment area. That is why it is worth undertaking restoration of river valleys in urban areas.

This paper presents a study of noise in room-temperature THz radiometers that use THz-to-optical upconversion followed by optical detection of thermal radiation. Despite some undesired upconverted thermal noise, no noise is intrinsically introduced by efcient electro-optic modulation via a sumfrequency-generation process in high quality factor (Q) whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators. However, coherent and incoherent optical detection results in fundamentally diferent noise characteristics. The analysis shows that the upconversion receiver is quantum limited like conventional amplifers and mixers, only when optical homodyne or heterodyne detection is performed. However, this type of receiver shows advantages as a THz photon counter, where counting is in the optical domain. Theoretical predictions show that upconversion-based room-temperature receivers can outperform state-of-the-art cooled and room-temperature THz receivers based on low-noise amplifers and mixers, provided that a photon conversion efciency greater than 1% is realized. Although the detection bandwidth is naturally narrow due to the highly resonant electro-optic modulator, it is not fundamentally limited and can be broadened by engineering selective optical coupling mechanisms to the resonator. Indexación Scopus Cetacean strandings (CS) have been reported in increasing numbers in coastal areas worldwide. Although the causes of these strandings are unknown, a number of anthropogenic and environmental factors have been suggested. This paper aims to characterize CS patterns and describe their fine-scale spatiotemporal dynamics. We analysed spatial and spatiotemporal CS patterns in Chile from January 1968 to January 2020. We identified a total of 389 CS events affecting eight cetacean families, 21 genera, and 35 species, which represent more than 85% of the reported species richness for the country. Most CS events (94.1%) were single (i.e., ≤two individuals). There were also 18 mass stranding (three to 24 individuals, 4.1%) and nine unusually large mass stranding events (>25 individuals, 2%). Purely spatial tests showed CS events appearing in random occurrence along the Chilean coast. Local tests for spatio-temporal clusters, however, identified a greater number of hotspots reported in the southernmost part of the country, namely, Chilean Patagonia. Specifically, significant spatio-temporal clusters were identified and defined as containing three or more individuals within a two-month period as a focal coastal event (

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is one of the main drivers of Earth’s inter-annual climate variability, often causes a wide range of climate anomalies, and the advance prediction of ENSO is always an important and challenging scientific issue. Since a unified and complete ENSO theory has yet to be established, people often use related indicators, such as the Niño 3.4 index and southern oscillation index (SOI), to predict the development trends of ENSO through appropriate numerical simulation models. However, because the ENSO phenomenon is a highly complex and dynamic model and the Niño 3.4 index and SOI mix many low- and high-frequency components, the prediction accuracy of current popular numerical prediction methods is not high. Therefore, this paper proposed the ensemble empirical mode decomposition-temporal convolutional network (EEMD-TCN) hybrid approach, which decomposes the highly variable Niño 3.4 index and SOI into relatively flat subcomponents and then uses the TCN model to predict each subcomponent in advance, finally combining the sub-prediction results to obtain the final ENSO prediction results. Niño 3.4 index and SOI reanalysis data from 1871 to 1973 were used for model training, and the data for 1984–2019 were predicted 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months in advance. The results show that the accuracy of the 1-month-lead Niño 3.4 index prediction was the highest, the 12-month-lead SOI prediction was the slowest, and the correlation coefficient between the worst SOI prediction result and the actual value reached 0.6406. Furthermore, the overall prediction accuracy on the Niño 3.4 index was better than that on the SOI, which may have occurred because the SOI contains too many high-frequency components, making prediction difficult. The results of comparative experiments with the TCN, LSTM, and EEMD-LSTM methods showed that the EEMD-TCN provides the best overall prediction of both the Niño 3.4 index and SOI in the 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month-lead predictions among all the methods considered. This result means that the TCN approach performs well in the advance prediction of ENSO and will be of great guiding significance in studying it.

In practical applications of signal detection, the roughness of a target surface significantly affects detection efficiency. In this paper, we propose a signal processing method that improves the sensitivity of a detection system by up to 100 times. In experiments, the target vibration measurement system successfully captured an automotive vibration power spectrum using the proposed signal processing method. This technology opens a new avenue for development in the field of rough surface target detection and recognition.

In this paper, novel zwitterionic graphene oxide (GO) nanohybrid was synthesized using monomers [2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) and N,N′-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBAAm) (GO@poly(SBMA-co-MBAAm), and incorporated into polysulfone (PSF) hollow fiber membrane for the effectual rejection of dye from the wastewater. The synthesized nanohybrid was characterized using FT-IR, PXRD, TGA, EDX, TEM and zeta potential analysis. The occurrence of nanohybrid on the membrane matrix and the elemental composition were analyzed by XPS. The as-prepared tight ultrafiltration hollow fiber membrane exhibited high rejection of reactive black 5 (RB-5, 99%) and reactive orange 16 (RO-16, 74%) at a dye concentration of 10 ppm and pure water flux (PWF) of 49.6 L/m2h. Fabricated nanocomposite membranes were also studied for their efficacy in the removal of both monovalent (NaCl) and divalent salts (Na2SO4). The results revealed that the membrane possesses complete permeation to NaCl with less rejection of Na2SO4 (

Due to many factors in the physical properties of the ground surface, the corresponding interferometric coherence values change dynamically over time. Among these factors, the roles of the vegetation and its temporal variation have not yet been revealed so far. In this paper, synthetic aperture radar (Sentinel-1) data and optical remote sensing (Landsat TM) images over four whole seasons are employed to reveal the relationship between the interferometric coherence and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) at five sites that have ground deformation due to mining in Henan province, China. The result showed: (1) As for the village area with few vegetation cover, the related coherence values are significantly higher than that in the farm land area with high densities of vegetation in the spring and summer, which indicates that the subsidence by mining in few vegetation cover area is easier to be monitored; (2) Linear regression coefficients ($${{\bf{R}}}^{{\bf{2}}}$$R2) between the interfereometric coherence values and the NDVI values is 0.62, which indicate the interferometric coherence values and the NDVI values change reversely in both farm land and village areas over the year. It suggests months between November and March with lower NDVI value are more suitable for deformation detecting. Therefore, the interfereometric coherence values can be used to detect the density of vegetation, while NDVI values can be reference for elucidating when the traditional differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) could be effectively used.

This paper presents changes in water and sewage management in the cross-border Oder River basin in the period since the post-communist political and economic system transformation, including the period after Poland’s accession to the European Union. The Oder River basin, with an area of 124,000 km2, is the second largest basin in the Baltic Sea Basin, and therefore requires particular protection. It was emphasised that in the years 1989–2017, water withdrawal for production purposes considerably decreased (by 42%), as well as water withdrawal for exploitation of the water supply system (by 33%). The amount of sewage discharged to rivers was also reduced (by approximately 50%), and treatment technologies considerably improved. Changes in water and sewage management were presented in spatial form, i.e. by hydrographic regions of the Oder River basin. Particular attention was paid to changes in sewage management in cities. They involved among others the liquidation of mechanical treatment plants and a considerable increase in the number of cities with treatment plants with increased nutrient removal. The analysis of the effect of the changes in water and sewage management on the quality of the Oder River and Baltic Sea was also performed, and the rate of decrease in loads of contaminants most harmful to water ecosystems was determined. The role of European Union funds and national funds in the implementation of investments in the scope of water management was emphasised. Finally, attention was drawn to the need to intensify works for protecting waters in agricultural areas, which currently constitute the primary threat to their quality. Several top-priority tasks were also specified that should be implemented in the near future for the purpose of obtaining a good ecological state of waters in the Oder River basin pursuant to the Water Framework Directive.

In this paper ultra clean monolayer and bilayer Chemical Vapor Deposited (CVD) graphene membranes with diameters up to 500 µm and 750 µm, respectively have been fabricated using Inverted Floating Method (IFM) followed by thermal annealing in vacuum. The yield decreases with size but we show the importance of choosing a good graphene raw material. Dynamic mechanical properties of the membranes at room temperature in different diameters are measured before and after annealing. The quality factor ranges from 200 to 2000 and shows no clear dependence on the size. The resonance frequency is inversely proportional to the diameter of the membranes. We observe a reduction of the effective intrinsic stress in the graphene, as well as of the relative error in the determination of said stress after thermal annealing. These measurements show that it is possible to produce graphene membranes with reproducible and excellent mechanical properties.

In the epoch of the Anthropocene change, complexity, and uncertainty create a demand for new systems of water management and governance. One such management model that is rapidly gaining traction amongst both scholars and practitioners is the concept of water resilience. Although increasing attention has been paid to the overarching theoretical and applied issues surrounding water resilience, few have examined individual attitudes and perceptions towards this concept. In this paper, we examine to what extent individuals endorse – that is, agree with and see the importance of using - social-ecological resilience as a framework for management and governance of water resources. We approach the problem and promise of water governance in this way because individuals’ mindsets (and shifts in mindsets) offers one of the most effective leverage points for larger system change. To explore water resilience endorsement, we developed a scale (i.e., a water resilience scale) that was designed to capture individual endorsement of each of the seven principles of social-ecological water resilience. Three additional sets of questionnaires were also used to examine whether individual characteristics (i.e., demographics, psychological factors, and environmental attitudes) predict water resilience endorsement. Overall, there was considerable societal endorsement of water resilience. However, the degree to which individuals endorsed the concept of water resilience differed as a function of demographics, psychological characteristics, and attitudes toward the environment. Future research should examine the nuances of endorsement and consider targeted approaches to influence endorsement levels by using the predictor variables as a basis for engaging and shifting mindsets.

The refrigerant circulation heat can be enhanced through the mutual transformation between thermal energy and surface energy during the adsorption and separation process of fluid molecules in porous materials. In this paper, the adsorption and energy storage of R1234ze(z), R1234yf, R32 and R134a, as well as their mixed refrigerants in Mg-MOF-74 and Ni-MOF-74 nanoparticles were investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The results suggested that, in the case of pure refrigerant adsorption, the adsorption quantities of R32 and R134a in MOFs were higher than those of R1234yf and R1234ze(z). However, in the case of saturation adsorption, the desorption heat of R32 was lower than that of R1234yf and R1234ze(z). The addition of MOF-74 nanoparticles (NPs) could enhance the energy storage capacity of the pure refrigerant; besides, R1234yf and R1234ze(z) nanofluids had superior enhancement effect to that of R32 nanofluid. In mixed refrigerant adsorption, the adsorption quantities of R1234ze(z) and R1234yf were lower than those of R32 and R134a; with the increase in temperature, the adsorption of R1234ze(z) and R1234yf showed a gradually increasing trend, while that of R32 was gradually decreased.

This paper presents estimates of the effects of changing climate on crop yields for grain corn and soybeans in Ontario, Canada, for 1959–2013. We were able to use a database that is more comprehensive with respect to explanatory variables than some previous efforts had available. Our model includes climate variables, prices, land quality, groundwater level, CO2 concentration, and a time trend. Our results indicate that trends in temperature and precipitation during our study period have not yet resulted in appreciable threats to crop yields in the region.

In this paper, we present an innovative electric-field-assisted magnetron-sputtering deposition method for films preparation. By grain boundary-engineering, we successeful obtained the ordered Sb2Te3 film with greatly high figure of merit via controlling external electric field. It has been found that the electric field can induce the change in the angle of intraplanar grain boundaries between (0 1 5) and (0 1 5) planes, which leads to the enhanced holes mobility and maintained low thermal conductivity. The energy filtering takes place at the angular intraplanar grain boundaries. At room temperature, a high ZT value of 1.75 can be achieved in the deposited Sb2Te3 film under 30 V external electric field. This is a very promising approach that the electric field induced deposition can develop high-performance Sb2Te3-based thermoelectric films.

Based on the geological conditions of overburden rock, the dynamic development law of overburden breakage was investigated by theoretical analysis and similarity model experiments in this paper. The formula of the compressive strength and No. ratio was obtained by testing the compressive strength of cylinder samples of similar materials. It can be seen from the overburden fracture evolution model established by theoretical calculations and similarity model experiments that the overlying rock layer’s breakage law is consistent. Additionally, the height of the “three zones” and the law of the fracture angle are basically consistent. Obtaining the synchronous collapse of the overlying strata controlled by the key strata, the interval of the upper key strata is larger than that of the lower key strata, and the mining interval is approximately double the size of the deformed rock height. According to the overburden movement, the distribution law of the overburden separation rate is obtained. The strain in the stress concentration area is negative, and when the stress is released suddenly, the strain increases rapidly. Fracture development is detected by the p-wave velocity in the model. Moreover, certain guidance for the horizon selection of high and low-level gas drainage roadways is provided by this study.

In this paper, for the first time, the switchable two-color quantum dot laser has been realized considering solution process technology, which has both simultaneous and lonely lasing capability exploiting selective energy contacts. Furthermore, both channels can be modulated independently, which is a significant feature in high-speed data transmission. To this end, utilizing superimposed quantum dots with various radii in the active layer provides the different emission wavelengths. In order to achieve the different sizes of QDs, solution process technology has been used as a cost-effectiveness and fabrication ease method. Moreover, at the introduced structure to accomplish the idea, the quantum wells are used as separate selective energy contacts to control the lasing channels at the desired wavelength. It makes the prominent device have simultaneous lasing at different emission wavelengths or be able to lase just at one wavelength. The performance of the proposed device has been modeled based on developed rate equation by assuming inhomogeneous broadening of energy levels as a consequence of the size distribution of quantum dots and considering tunnel injection of carriers into the quantum dots via selective energy contacts. Based on simulation results, the simultaneous lasing in both or at one of two wavelengths 1.31 μm and 1.55 μm has been realized by the superimposition of two different sizes of InGaAs quantum dots in a single cavity and accomplishment of selective energy contacts. Besides, controlling the quantum dot coverage leads to managing the output power and modulation response at the desired wavelengths. By offering this idea, one more step is actually taken to approach the switchable QD-laser by the simple solution process method.

Selective area thermal etching (SATE) of gallium nitride is a simple subtractive process for creating novel device architectures and improving the structural and optical quality of III-nitride-based devices. In contrast to plasma etching, it allows, for example, the creation of enclosed features with extremely high aspect ratios without introducing ion-related etch damage. We report how SATE can create uniform and organized GaN nanohole arrays from c-plane and (11–22) semi-polar GaN in a conventional MOVPE reactor. The morphology, etching anisotropy and etch depth of the nanoholes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy for a broad range of etching parameters, including the temperature, the pressure, the NH3 flow rate and the carrier gas mixture. The supply of NH3 during SATE plays a crucial role in obtaining a highly anisotropic thermal etching process with the formation of hexagonal non-polar-faceted nanoholes. Changing other parameters affects the formation, or not, of non-polar sidewalls, the uniformity of the nanohole diameter, and the etch rate, which reaches 6 µm per hour. Finally, the paper discusses the SATE mechanism within a MOVPE environment, which can be applied to other mask configurations, such as dots, rings or lines, along with other crystallographic orientations.

The real-time monitoring technology plays a significant role in the field of laser aided manufacturing. It not only ensures the product quality, but also saves time and expenditure on the subsequent testing. To develop a method to monitor the properties of laser molten zone, in this paper, the AISI4140 steel samples were melted by laser with different parameters. At the same time, the plasma spectra were detected during real-time laser processing. The evolutions for both emission spectra and hardness of molten zone were researched in this work. To correlate the intensity of spectral line with the hardness of molten zone, the method of dimensionless analysis was used in this experiment. As the results shown, in a dimensionless system, there was a linear correlation between dimensionless micro-hardness of molten zone (H*) and dimensionless laser energy density(ln(δ*)); the dimensionless micro-hardness could be expressed by a piecewise function using dimensionless intensity of Fe I spectral lines(I*), dimensionless velocity(v*) and dimensionless laser energy density as variables; depending on the quantitative relation among all dimensionless, a monitoring system of hardness of molten zone was established; by testing under different parameters of laser processing, the mean error of prediction is lower than 3.1%. It means the emission spectroscopy can be a potential way to monitor the properties of parts prepared by laser processing.

During this paper, we improved the compressive strength of cementitious matrix based on ion exchanging resin (IER) at 12% and formulated by the modified novolac epoxy polymer surfactant (NEPS) at various percentages (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5%). The results show that the introduction of 1% and 2% of NEPS in the cementitious matrix with 12% of IER increases the compressive strength compared to that of the basic matrix (from 7 to 90 days). However, the formulations 3, 4 and 5% show the compressive strength is less than that of the basic matrix (from 28 to 90 days).

In this paper, we study the relativistic effects in a three-body bound state. For this purpose, the relativistic form of the Faddeev equations is solved in momentum space as a function of the Jacobi momentum vectors without using a partial wave decomposition. The inputs for the three-dimensional Faddeev integral equation are the off-shell boost two-body t–matrices, which are calculated directly from the boost two-body interactions by solving the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. The matrix elements of the boost interactions are obtained from the nonrelativistic interactions by solving a nonlinear integral equation using an iterative scheme. The relativistic effects on three-body binding energy are calculated for the Malfliet-Tjon potential. Our calculations show that the relativistic effects lead to a roughly 2% reduction in the three-body binding energy. The contribution of different Faddeev components in the normalization of the relativistic three-body wave function is studied in detail. The accuracy of our numerical solutions is tested by calculation of the expectation value of the three-body mass operator, which shows an excellent agreement with the relativistic energy eigenvalue.

Understanding the thermal stability of metallic glasses is critical to determining their safe temperatures of service. In this paper, the crystallization mechanism in spark plasma sintered Fe48Cr15Mo14Y2C15B6 metallic glass is established by analyzing the crystal size distribution using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and in-situ small angle neutron scattering. Isothermal annealing at 700 °C and 725 °C for 100 min resulted in the formation of (Fe,Cr)23C6 crystals, measured from transmission electron micrographs, to be from 10 to 30 nm. The small angle neutron scattering intensity measured in-situ, over a Q-range of 0.02 to 0.3 Å−1, during isothermal annealing of the sintered samples, confirmed the presence of (Fe,Cr)23C6 crystals. The measured scattering intensity, fitted by the maximum entropy model, over the Q-range of 0.02 to 0.06 Å−1, revealed that the crystals had radii ranging from 3 to 18 nm. The total volume fraction of crystals were estimated to be 0.13 and 0.22 upon isothermal annealing at 700 °C and 725 °C for 100 min respectively. The mechanism of crystallization in this spark plasma sintered iron based metallic glass was established to be from pre-existing nuclei as confirmed by Avrami exponents of 0.25 ± 0.01 and 0.39 ± 0.01 at the aforesaid temperatures.

This paper presented a conformal smoothing theory, and smoothing capability evaluation was established on the proposed theory. According to pressure distribution model, processing parameters have been optimized and the CPP sample with a size of 340 × 340 mm was applied in conformal smoothing. The middle spatial frequency was effectively corrected with the total polishing time of 750 min, and energy was constringed 32.2 times (improved from 57.68 nm2·mm to 1.79 nm2·mm). Meanwhile, surface roughness RMS (root mean square) maintained at the same scale (changed from 265.4 nm to 265.2 nm). Parametric conformal smoothing was proven to be an effective method to control the middle spatial frequency error of CPPs.

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study thermal properties of bulk iron material and Fe nanoparticles (FNP) by using a ReaxFF reactive force field. Thermodynamic and energy properties such as radial distribution function, Lindemann index and potential energy plots are adopted to study the melting behaviors of FNPs from 300 K to 2500 K. A step-heating method is introduced to obtain equilibrium melting points. Our results show ReaxFF force field is able to detect size effect in FNP melting no matter in energy or structure evolution aspect. Extra storage energy of FNPs caused by defects (0%-10%) is firstly studied in this paper: defects will not affect the melting point of FNPs directly but increase the system energy especially when temperature reaches the melting points.

This paper portrays the dynamics of pine wilt disease. The specific formula for reproduction number is accomplished. Global behavior is completely demonstrated on the basis of the basic reproduction number $${{\boldsymbol{R}}}_{{\boldsymbol{o}}}$$Ro. The disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable for $${{\boldsymbol{R}}}_{{\boldsymbol{o}}}{\boldsymbol{ < }}{\bf{1}}$$Ro<1 and in such a case, the endemic equilibrium does not exist. If $${{\boldsymbol{R}}}_{{\boldsymbol{o}}}$$Ro exceeds one, the disease persists and the unique endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. Global stability of disease-free equilibrium is proved using a Lyapunov function. A graph-theoretic approach is applied to show the global stability of the unique endemic equilibrium. Sensitivity analysis has been established and control strategies have been designed on the basis of sensitivity analysis.

The realization of reversed Doppler effects in double-negative acoustic metamaterials remains challenging. This paper demonstrates the reversed Doppler effect associated with sound wave propagation in negative group velocity in hybridized metamaterial (HM) system using a simple Mie-resonator configuration. Double-negative acoustic parameters act simultaneously on the effective dynamic bulk modulus and mass density within overlapped frequency region of multiple Mie resonances. Notably, while ordinary media exhibits higher received frequency during the approach and lower during the recession, we observe that in HM the detected signals show redshift compared to the emitted frequency when approaching to the source while depict blue shift when receding from the source. On this basis, the HM exhibits negative phase velocity with reversed wavefronts and negative refraction effect for certain frequency range. Focusing of sound waves emitted from a point source is further realized with a flat lens composed by such a HM slab.

The Arrhenius activation energy and binary chemical reaction are taken into account to consider the magnetohydrodynamic mixed convection second grade nanofluid flow through a porous medium in the presence of thermal radiation, heat absorption/generation, buoyancy effects and entropy generation. The items composing of the governing systems are degenerated to nonlinear ordinary differential equations by adopting the appropriate similarity transformations which are computed through Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg (RKF) numerical technique along with Shooting method. The solution is manifested through graphs which provides a detailed explanations of each profile in terms of involved parameters effects. The compared results maintain outstanding approach to the previous papers.

Recalescence rate (R) in cooling curve is well known that affected by undercooling in solidification, but the accurate relationship of them is not clear yet. In this paper, based on the undercooled solidification of Fe-B alloy, the factor affected on recalescence process was investigated. The relationship R = VΔT/D was first found, where V is the growth velocity, ΔT the recalescence degree (approximate the undercooling), D the focus region diameter dependent on the distance of the pyrometer. With this result the solidification interface growth velocity can be predicted from recalescence of cooling curve, vice versa. In addition, an approximate relation between growth velocity and the size of the critical nucleus was shown.

DNA gels can be engineered to exhibit specific properties through the choice of DNA sequences and modification with dye molecules, and can therefore be useful in biomedical applications such as the detection of biomolecules. State transitions of DNA gels on the micrometre scale can generate a viscosity gradient, which can be used to modify the mobility of micrometre-sized objects. In this paper, we propose a method for changing the viscosity of DNA gels using optical decomposition. The use of light allows for decomposition on the micrometre scale, which can be used to achieve patterned viscosity changes within DNA gels. Decomposition was induced by thermal energy released through non-radiative relaxation of excited quenchers. We demonstrated the decomposition of DNA gels in response to irradiation patterns on the micrometre scale. In addition, as a result of changes in DNA gel viscosity due to decomposition, the mobility of polystyrene beads was shown to increase. This technique could provide a new optical approach for controlling the mobility of micrometre-sized objects.

Nowadays, there are several approaches reported to accomplish the green synthesis of metal nanoparticles by using bacterial and fungi supernatants or by-products generated by these microorganisms. Therefore, agars as solely reductive regents have started to be used in order to obtain metal nanoparticles. This paper shows the results of the synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles with different morphology, mainly triangular and truncated triangular, using Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) agar as reducing agent. To control the reaction process, the necessary activation energy for the reducer was provided by three different techniques: microwave radiation, using a domestic microwave oven, ultraviolet radiation, and heating on a conventional plate. The evolution of the reduction process and stability of the samples was performed by ultraviolet visible spectroscopy. Morphology was carefully analyzed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A one step synthesis for gold and silver nanoparticles was optimized with an eco-friendly and economic process.

A high-throughput investigation of metallic glass formation via solid-state reaction was reported in this paper. Combinatorial multilayered thin-film chips covering the entire Ti–Ni–Cu ternary system were prepared using ion beam sputtering technique. Microbeam synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements were conducted, with 1,325 data points collected from each chip, to map out the composition and the phase constitution before and after annealing at 373 K for 110 hours. The composition dependence of the crystal-to-glass transition by solid-state reaction was surveyed using this approach. The resulting composition–phase map is consistent with previously reported results. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) was performed on the representative compositions to determine the inter-diffusion between layers, the result shows that the diffusion of Ti is the key factor for the crystal-to-glass transition. In addition, both layer thickness and layer sequence play important roles as well. This work demonstrates that combinatorial chip technique is an efficient way for systematic and rapid study of crystal-to-glass transition for multi-component alloy systems.

The objective of the paper was to determine the influence of iron(III) ions on the growth and metabolism of fungi commonly occurring in waters: the yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and filamentous fungus Cladosporium herbarum. Cells of R. mucilaginosa were shown to absorb the most iron(III) ions at a concentration of 1 mg/L iron(III) ions. Yeast cells showed a considerable increase in the content of proteins and monosaccharides, as well as biomass growth. At higher concentrations of iron(III) ions, the yeast limited the intake of iron(III) ions, and a decrease in the basic metabolites in cells was observed, as well as an increase in the secretion of such metabolites into the medium. Moreover, the activity of antioxidant enzymes increased in the fungal cells, suggesting that iron(III) ions have a toxic effect. Simultaneously, even at high concentrations of iron(III) ions in the medium, no decrease in the yeast biomass was recorded. It seems therefore that the potentially pathogenic R. mucilaginosa will likely be present in waters moderately contaminated with iron(III) ions. It can be useful as a water quality bioindicator. A considerably higher capacity for the biosorption of iron(III) ions was recorded for the filamentous fungus C. herbarum. Defensive mechanisms were observed for C. herbarum, which were manifested in a substantial increase in the content of proteins and monosaccharides, as well as an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes, particularly under the influence of high concentrations of iron(III) ions. Moreover, it was evidenced that in the filamentous fungus, iron(III) ions limited the extracellular secretion of metabolites. These results suggest that the fungus can actively accumulate iron(III) ions and therefore eliminate them from the aquatic environment. It can be useful in water treatment processes, which has a significant impact on water ecology.

PV technologies are increasingly making significant contribution to global energy generation (GEG), attributed to their high potential of increasing efficiency, cost reduction, and improving energy security. These technologies however rely on metals that are identified as critical due to risks associated with their supply, and other materials that require energy and water for their production. In this paper, a comprehensive assessment of required materials for PV technologies, an analysis of their materials inflows, outflows, and stocks, an estimate of their maximum contribution to global energy scenarios (GES), and an estimate of energy and water required for their material production and associated CO2 emissions under the nexus approach, have been carried out using a dynamic material flow-stock model. A total of 100 energy-material nexus scenarios, which combines 10 GES and 10 materials scenarios, have been analysed. Results indicate that although most GES are difficult to be realized under current PV technologies market share and condition; these technologies could make significant contribution to GEG in future. The three commercial thin-film PV technologies could produce between 3% and 22% of electricity generation in IEA-450 scenario. Energy required for PV materials production is expected to reach between 5.9% and 11.8% of electricity generated (EG) by PV solar and between 0.76% and 1.52% of total EG in IEA-450 scenario by 2050. CO2 emissions associated with material production are expected to be between 0.94% and 2.2% of total CO2 emissions in IEA-450 scenario by 2050.

Free-Space Optical (FSO) systems offer the ability to distribute high speed digital links into remote and rural communities where terrain, installation cost or infrastructure security pose critical hurdles to deployment. A challenge in any point-to-point FSO system is initiating and maintaining optical alignment from the sender to the receiver. In this paper we propose and demonstrate a low-complexity self-aligning FSO prototype that can completely self-align with no requirement for initial manual positioning and could therefore form the opto-mechanical basis for a mesh network of optical transceivers. The prototype utilises off-the-shelf consumer electrical components and a bespoke alignment algorithm. We demonstrate an eight fibre spatially multiplexed link with a loss of 15 dB over 210 m.

In this paper, the Taklimakan Desert land surface emissivity measured by portable Fourier Transform thermal InfraRed spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to re-estimate Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) BroadBand Emissivity (BBE) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) BBE optimal coefficients equations. In addition, the revised BBE equations of both GLASS and MODIS with the optimized coefficients were obtained. Comparing the FTIR and MODIS BBE data with the values retrieved before and after the revised GLASS BBE equation, it was found that the revised GLASS BBE equation is more accurate than the original one. First, according to the error analysis with FTIR data, the value of R2 is increased from 0.4 to 0.9, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Bias are reduced by 1 and 3 magnitude orders, respectively. Second, with MODIS BBE data, the value of R2 is increased from 0.6 to 0.9, the RMSE and Bias are reduced by 1 and 2 magnitude orders, respectively. Finally, the Taklimakan Desert BBE was calculated using the revised GLASS BBE equation. The results showed that the BBE values are between 0.890 and 0.920 in the desert center, between 0.920 and 0.950 in the sparse vegetation areas, and between 0.950 and 0.980 in the oasis edges.

The terrestrial ecosystem productivity and foundation of regional ecosystem services have been significantly influenced by recent urbanization processes. This study assesses the changes in terrestrial ecosystem productivity in Jiangsu from the years of 2000 to 2015 in response to the urbanization. A linear model that incorporates the traditional equalization method is proposed to improve the estimation accuracy of net primary productivity (NPP) loss. Results revealed that the land area of urban construction expanded rapidly during the research period to encompass an area of 8672.8 km2. The rate of expansion was highest during 2005–2010. Additionally, the expansion rate of urban construction land was considerably higher in southern Jiangsu compared to the northern areas. The NPP exhibited a rising tendency from the year of 2000 to 2015, and varied from 33.30 to 40.23 Tg C/y. It was higher in the central parts, which include the cities of Yancheng and Nantong. The increase in urban construction land has resulted in a significant reduction in the terrestrial ecosystem productivity, i.e. a cumulative NPP loss of 2.55–2.88 Tg C during the research period. The NPP losses due to the conversion from cropland to constrction land were the highest, followed by the wetland. The work in this paper indicates that the rate of future productivity losses in terrestrial ecosystem in northern Jiangsu would be faster than the southern areas.

A novel and simple method to fabricate microchannels is reported based on an inkjet printing of a volatile solid mold. A liquid ink -1,6 hexanediol- ejected from a piezoelectric nozzle is instantaneously frozen when touching a cooled substrate. The created mold is then poured with PDMS. Once the PDMS is crosslinked, the ink is sublimated and the device is ready. With this approach it is possible to make microchannels on different nature surfaces such as glass, paper, uncross-linked PDMS layer or non planar substrates. The versatility of this method is illustrated by printing channels directly on commercial electrodes and measuring the channel capacitance. Moreover, millimetric height microfluidic systems are easily produced (aspect ratio $$\ge $$≥ 25) as well as 3D structures such as bridges. To demonstrate, we have fabricated a combinatorial microfluidic system which makes 6 mixtures from 4 initial solutions without any stacking and tedious alignment procedure.

Gaussian Graphical Models (GGMs) are extensively used in many research areas, such as genomics, proteomics, neuroimaging, and psychology, to study the partial correlation structure of a set of variables. This structure is visualized by drawing an undirected network, in which the variables constitute the nodes and the partial correlations the edges. In many applications, it makes sense to impose sparsity (i.e., some of the partial correlations are forced to zero) as sparsity is theoretically meaningful and/or because it improves the predictive accuracy of the fitted model. However, as we will show by means of extensive simulations, state-of-the-art estimation approaches for imposing sparsity on GGMs, such as the Graphical lasso, ℓ1 regularized nodewise regression, and joint sparse regression, fall short because they often yield too many false positives (i.e., partial correlations that are not properly set to zero). In this paper we present a new estimation approach that allows to control the false positive rate better. Our approach consists of two steps: First, we estimate an undirected network using one of the three state-of-the-art estimation approaches. Second, we try to detect the false positives, by flagging the partial correlations that are smaller in absolute value than a given threshold, which is determined through cross-validation; the flagged correlations are set to zero. Applying this new approach to the same simulated data, shows that it indeed performs better. We also illustrate our approach by using it to estimate (1) a gene regulatory network for breast cancer data, (2) a symptom network of patients with a diagnosis within the nonaffective psychotic spectrum and (3) a symptom network of patients with PTSD. ispartof: Scientific Reports vol:9 issue:1 pages:1-24 ispartof: location:England status: published

Invasive species pose a major threat to biodiversity on islands. While successes have been achieved using traditional removal methods, such as toxicants aimed at rodents, these approaches have limitations and various off-target effects on island ecosystems. Gene drive technologies designed to eliminate a population provide an alternative approach, but the potential for drive-bearing individuals to escape from the target release area and impact populations elsewhere is a major concern. Here we propose the “Locally Fixed Alleles” approach as a novel means for localizing elimination by a drive to an island population that exhibits significant genetic isolation from neighboring populations. Our approach is based on the assumption that in small island populations of rodents, genetic drift will lead to alleles at multiple genomic loci becoming fixed. In contrast, multiple alleles are likely to be maintained in larger populations on mainlands. Utilizing the high degree of genetic specificity achievable using homing drives, for example based on the CRISPR/Cas9 system, our approach aims at employing one or more locally fixed alleles as the target for a gene drive on a particular island. Using mathematical modeling, we explore the feasibility of this approach and the degree of localization that can be achieved. We show that across a wide range of parameter values, escape of the drive to a neighboring population in which the target allele is not fixed will at most lead to modest transient suppression of the non-target population. While the main focus of this paper is on elimination of a rodent pest from an island, we also discuss the utility of the locally fixed allele approach for the goals of population suppression or population replacement. Our analysis also provides a threshold condition for the ability of a gene drive to invade a partially resistant population.

Invasive species are recognized as a significant threat to biodiversity. The mathematical modeling of their spatio-temporal dynamics can provide significant help to environmental managers in devising suitable control strategies. Several mathematical approaches have been proposed in recent decades to efficiently model the dispersal of invasive species. Relying on the assumption that the dispersal of an individual is random, but the density of individuals at the scale of the population can be considered smooth, reaction-diffusion models are a good trade-off between model complexity and flexibility for use in different situations. In this paper we present a continuous reaction-diffusion model coupled with arbitrary Polynomial Chaos (aPC) to assess the impact of uncertainties in the model parameters. We show how the finite elements framework is well-suited to handle important landscape heterogeneities as elevation and the complex geometries associated with the boundaries of an actual geographical region. We demonstrate the main capabilities of the proposed coupled model by assessing the uncertainties in the invasion of an alien species invading the Basque Country region in Northern Spain., ESPRC and Airbus iCASE (voucher 17000099)

Commercial light emitting diode (LED) materials - blue (i.e., InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) for display and lighting), green (i.e., InGaN/GaN MQWs for display), and red (i.e., Al0.05Ga0.45In0.5P/Al0.4Ga0.1In0.5P for display) are evaluated in range of temperature (77–800) K for future applications in high density power electronic modules. The spontaneous emission quantum efficiency (QE) of blue, green, and red LED materials with different wavelengths was calculated using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The spontaneous emission QE was obtained based on a known model so-called the ABC model. This model has been recently used extensively to calculate the internal quantum efficiency and its droop in the III-nitride LED. At 800 K, the spontaneous emission quantum efficiencies are around 40% for blue for lighting and blue for display LED materials, and it is about 44.5% for green for display LED materials. The spontaneous emission QE is approximately 30% for red for display LED material at 800 K. The advance reported in this paper evidences the possibility of improving high temperature optocouplers with an operating temperature of 500 K and above.

X-ray imaging has conventionally relied upon attenuation to provide contrast. In recent years, two complementary modalities have been added; (a) phase contrast, which can capture low-density samples that are difficult to see using attenuation, and (b) dark-field x-ray imaging, which reveals the presence of sub-pixel sample structures. These three modalities can be accessed using a crystal analyser, a grating interferometer or by looking at a directly-resolved grid, grating or speckle pattern. Grating and grid-based methods extract a differential phase signal by measuring how far a feature in the illumination has been shifted transversely due to the presence of a sample. The dark-field signal is extracted by measuring how the visibility of the structured illumination is decreased, typically due to the presence of sub-pixel structures in a sample. The strength of the dark-field signal may depend on the grating period, the pixel size and the set-up distances, and additional dark-field signal contributions may be seen as a result of strong phase effects or other factors. In this paper we show that the finite-difference form of the Fokker–Planck equation can be applied to describe the drift (phase signal) and diffusion (dark-field signal) of the periodic or structured illumination used in phase contrast x-ray imaging with gratings, in order to better understand any cross-talk between attenuation, phase and dark-field x-ray signals. In future work, this mathematical description could be used as a basis for new approaches to the inverse problem of recovering both phase and dark-field information.

Inertial particle focusing in curved channels has enormous potential for lab-on-a-chip applications. This paper compares a zigzag channel, which has not been used previously for inertial focusing studies, with a serpentine channel and a square wave channel to explore their differences in terms of focusing performance and separation possibilities. The particle trajectories and fluid fields in the curved channels are studied by a numerical simulation. The effects of different conditions (structure, Reynolds number, and particle size) on the competition between forces and the focusing performance are studied. The results indicate that the zigzag channel has the best focusing effect at a high Reynolds number and that the serpentine channel is second in terms of performance. Regarding the particle separation potential, the zigzag channel has a good performance in separating 5 μm and 10 μm particles at ReC = 62.5. In addition, the pressure drop of the channel is also considered to evaluate the channel performance, which has not been taken into account in the literature on inertial microfluidics. This result is expected to be instructive for the selection and optimization of inertial microchannel structures.

Ultra-low-loss and large-effective-area fiber has been successfully applied in transoceanic transmission, which is considered as a promising candidate for 100 Gbit/s and beyond 100 Gbit/s coherent long-haul terrestrial optical networks. Several theoretical and experimental investigations have been reported, including provincial terrestrial field trial. To support long-haul terrestrial application, it is urgent to prove that the ultra-low-loss and large-effective-area fiber after terrestrial deployment can significantly enhance the performance of long-haul transmission over 1000 km compared with the conventional single mode fiber. In this paper, we extended our previous work and summarized design methods for complex terrestrial environment. To verify the fiber characteristics in long-haul terrestrial transmission, we installed the longest terrestrial ultra-low-loss and large-effective-area fiber link in the world with a total length of 1539.6 km. The results show that the transmission performances of wavelength-division-multiplexed signals with per-channel data rates of 100 Gbit/s, 200 Gbit/s, and 400 Gbit/s over the ultra-low-loss and large-effective-area fiber are all obviously improved, demonstrating that this fiber is more suitable for ultrahigh-speed long-haul terrestrial transmission.

Quantum key agreement (QKA) is to negotiate a final key among several participants fairly and securely. In this paper, we show that some existing travelling-mode multiparty QKA protocols are vulnerable to internal participant’s attacks. Dishonest participants can exploit a favorable geographical location or collude with other participants to predetermine the final keys without being discovered. To resist such attacks, we propose a new travelling-mode multiparty QKA protocol based on non-orthogonal Bell states. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed protocol is secure against both external and internal attacks, and can achieve higher efficiency compared with existing travelling-mode multiparty QKA protocols. Finally we design an optical platform for each participant, and show that our proposed protocol is feasible with current technologies.

In this paper, modulation of reflected wavefront out of the incident plane by a tunable acoustic metasurface is investigated based on the fully generalized Snell’s law in the three-dimensional space. The metasurface is constructed by a square lattice of circular holes with gradient annular bumps. The phase shift is tuned by changing the volume of water filled in the holes. The acoustic wave steering out of the incident plane and the out-of-plane acoustic focusing with the oblique incidence at the subwavelength scale are demonstrated numerically by selecting suitable distributions of water depth. The numerical results show that the wavefront of the reflected wave can be manipulated over a wide frequency range; and the gradient design of the unit cells can suppress the parasitic reflection. The present work is relevant to the practical design of novel acoustic devices.
