This paper proposes a new method for converting a time-series into a weighted graph (complex network), which builds on electrostatics in physics. The proposed method conceptualizes a time-series as a series of stationary, electrically charged particles, on which Coulomb-like forces can be computed. This allows generating electrostatic-like graphs associated with time-series that, additionally to the existing transformations, can be also weighted and sometimes disconnected. Within this context, this paper examines the structural similarity between five different types of time-series and their associated graphs that are generated by the proposed algorithm and the visibility graph, which is currently the most popular algorithm in the literature. The analysis compares the source (original) time-series with the node-series generated by network measures (that are arranged into the node-ordering of the source time-series), in terms of a linear trend, chaotic behaviour, stationarity, periodicity, and cyclical structure. It is shown that the proposed electrostatic graph algorithm generates graphs with node-measures that are more representative of the structure of the source time-series than the visibility graph. This makes the proposed algorithm more natural rather than algebraic, in comparison with existing physics-defined methods. The overall approach also suggests a methodological framework for evaluating the structural relevance between the source time-series and their associated graphs produced by any possible transformation.

For more complex nonlinear systems, where the amplitude of excitation can vary in time or where time-dependent external disturbances appear, an analysis based on the frequency response curve may be insufficient. In this paper, a new tool to analyze nonlinear dynamical systems is proposed as an extension to the frequency response curve. A new tool can be defined as the chart of bistability areas and area of unstable solutions of the analyzed system. In the paper, this tool is discussed on the basis of the classic Duffing equation. The numerical approach was used, and two systems were tested. Both systems are softening, but the values of the coefficient of nonlinearity are significantly different. Relationships between both considered systems are presented, and problems of the nonlinearity coefficient and damping influence are discussed.

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are considered as the third generation of artificial neural networks, having the potential to improve the energy efficiency of conventional computing systems. Although the firing rate of a spiking neuron is an approximation of rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation in an analog-valued neural network (ANN), there remain many challenges to be overcome owing to differences in operation between ANNs and SNNs. Unlike actual biological and biophysical processes, various hardware implementations of neurons and SNNs do not allow the membrane potential to fall below the resting potential—in other words, neurons must allow the sub-resting membrane potential. Because there occur an excitatory post-synaptic potential (EPSP) as well as an inhibitory post-synaptic potential (IPSP), negatively valued synaptic weights in SNNs induce the sub-resting membrane potential at some time point. If a membrane is not allowed to hold the sub-resting potential, errors will accumulate over time, resulting in inaccurate inference operations. This phenomenon is not observed in ANNs given their use of only spatial synaptic integration, but it can cause serious performance degradation in SNNs. In this paper, we demonstrate the impact of the sub-resting membrane potential on accurate inference operations in SNNs. Moreover, several important considerations for a hardware SNN that can maintain the sub-resting membrane potential are discussed. All of the results in this paper indicate that it is essential for neurons to allow the sub-resting membrane potential in order to realize high-performance SNNs.

A system of N two-level atoms, Tavis-Cummings Dicke (TC-Dicke) model, interacting with a one-mode electromagnetic radiation field in the presence of the Stark shifts is studied, which is expected to predict new phenomena that are not explored in the original TC-Dicke model. We obtained the potential energy surface of the system using a trial state the direct product of coherent states in each subspace. In the frame of mean-field approaches, the variational energy is evaluated as the expectation value of the Hamiltonian for this state. The order of the quantum phase transitions is determined explicitly and numerically. We estimate the ground-state energy and the macroscopic excitations in the superradiant phase. Moreover, we investigated the critical properties of the TC-Dicke model in the classical spin limit and coherent state. We observed that in the thermodynamic limit, the energy surface takes a simple form a direct description of the phase transition. Moreover, it is found that when the microwave amplitude changes the new phase transition occurs with the Stark shift. The analytical solutions and numerical results, which appear in this paper are agreement with our paper which published recently in Int. J. Mod. Phys. B when we studied the same model using a different coherent state.

In this paper, the revised Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof screened hybrid functional (HSE06) is used to investigate the interaction between hydrogen with different concentrations and gallium vacancies in β-Ga2O3. The hydrogen can compensate a gallium vacancy by forming hydrogen-vacancy complex. A gallium vacancy can bind up to four hydrogen atoms, and formation energies decrease as the number of hydrogen atoms increases. Hydrogen prefers to bind with three coordinated oxygen. The bonding energy and annealing temperatures of complexes containing more than two hydrogen atoms are computed, and show relatively high stability. In addition, vacancy concentrations increase with the increasing vapor pressures. This paper can effectively explain the hydrogen impact in β-Ga2O3.

In this paper, we present the weighted scale-free treelike networks controlled by the weight factor r and the parameter m. Based on the network structure, we study two types of weight-dependent walks with a highest-degree trap. One is standard weight-dependent walk, while the other is mixed weight-dependent walk including both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor jumps. Although some properties have been revealed in weighted networks, studies on mixed weight-dependent walks are still less and remain a challenge. For the weighted scale-free treelike network, we derive exact solutions of the average trapping time (ATT) measuring the efficiency of the trapping process. The obtained results show that ATT is related to weight factor r, parameter m and spectral dimension of the weighted network. We find that in different range of the weight factor r, the leading term of ATT grows differently, i.e., superlinearly, linearly and sublinearly with the network size. Furthermore, the obtained results show that changing the walking rule has no effect on the leading scaling of the trapping efficiency. All results in this paper can help us get deeper understanding about the effect of link weight, network structure and the walking rule on the properties and functions of complex networks.

In this paper, an alternative perspective for the generation of millimetric high-gradient resonant plasma waves is discussed. This method is based on the plasma-wave excitation by energetic single-cycle THz pulses whose temporal length is comparable to the plasma wavelength. The excitation regime discussed in this paper is the quasi-nonlinear regime that can be achieved when the normalized vector potential of the driving THz pulse is on the order of unity. To investigate this regime and determine the strength of the excited electric fields, a Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code has been used. It has been found that by exploiting THz pulses with characteristics currently available in laboratory, longitudinal electron plasma waves with electric gradients up to hundreds MV/m can be obtained. The mm-size nature of the resonant plasma wave can be of great utility for an acceleration scheme in which high-brightness electron bunches are injected into the wave to undergo a strong acceleration. The long-size nature of the acceleration bucket with respect to the short length of the electron bunches can be handled in a more robust manner in comparison with the case when micrometric waves are employed.

With the application of advanced composite materials in High-Aspect-Ratio wings (HARW), the randomness of structural parameters, such as elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio, is enhanced. Hence, in order to explore the whole picture of aeroelastic problems, it is of great significance to study the role of random structural parameters in aeroelastic problems. In this paper, the dynamic response of flexible HARW considering random structural parameters is analyzed. An aeroelastic model of a one-dimensional cantilevered Euler–Bernoulli beam considering aerodynamic forces acting on the wing is established based on Hamilton's principle. Adopted the idea of simplifying calculation, the effect of random structural parameters is analyzed. Then, considering the elastic modulus and torsional stiffness as continuously one-dimensional random field functions, and discretized by local method. The first and second order recursive stochastic nonlinear finite element equations of wing are derived by using perturbation method. Based on it, statistical expression of aeroelastic effects of the wing is derived. Monte Carlo method is adopted to verify the effectiveness of the method. Numerical simulations indicate that the method proposed can well mirror the statistical characteristics of aeroelastic response.

In this paper, we investigate the Yangian relations of Heisenberg spin chain systems. Firstly, we consider the closed XXZ spin chain model, through the Heisenberg spin XXZ model, we found the Hamiltonians for one kind system of three adjacent partial particles interaction systems. The model’s constitution rules of energy levels and energy states which expand from the few-particle system to multi-particle system have good regularity. In this system, we found Yangian’s law and illustrate it through graphs. Secondly, we further consider the closed XXZ spin chain’s generalization of other three neighboring particles interaction systems from few-particle system to multi-particle system. Finally, we also discussed the laws of the three adjacent particles system of some models, they are the XXZ model with twist boundary condition, the open XXZ spin chain model and the XXZ model containing the next neighbor. In addition, not only XXZ model, XXX model, XY model and Ising model, but the relevant laws of spin-1 systems of these models were also discussed, they have similar rules to the XXZ model. Through calculation and research, the eigensystems of these models all have good Yangian and constitution laws.

Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), which featuring helical phase front, have been regarded as an alternative spatial degree of freedom for optical mode coding and multiplexing. For most reported OAM-based mode coding schemes, data information is only encoded by different OAM mode states. In this paper, we introduce a novel design technique to construct vortex array phase grating (VAPGs) for the flexible generation of vortex arrays, and employ the proposed VAPGs to realize multi-dimensional space/mode/amplitude coding/decoding. By designing VAPGs with different parameters and loading them on to a single spatial light modulator (SLM), we successfully generate vortex array with different mode states and relative power in the experiments. Moreover, a 10-bit multi-dimensional space/mode/amplitude data coding/decoding scheme for image transfer in free-space link with a zero bit-error-rate is experimentally demonstrated, which confirm the feasibility of our proposed VAPG-based coding/decoding scheme.

Spin-orbit-induced (SOI) effective magnetic field in GaMnAs film with in-plane magnetic anisotropy has been investigated by planar Hall effect measurements. The presence of SOI field was identified by a shift between planar Hall resistance (PHR) hystereses observed with positive and negative currents. The difference of switching fields occurring between the two current polarities, which is determined by the strength of the SOI field, is shown to depend on the external field direction. In this paper we have developed a method for obtaining the magnitude of the SOI fields based on magnetic free energy that includes the effects of magnetic anisotropy and the SOI field. Using this approach, the SOI field for a given current density was accurately obtained by fitting to the observed dependence of the switching fields on the applied field directions. Values of the SOI field obtained with field scan PHR measurements give results that are consistent with those obtained by analyzing the angular dependence of PHR, indicating the reliability of the field scan PHR method for quantifying the SOI-field in GaMnAs films. The magnitude of the SOI field systematically increases with increasing current density, demonstrating the usefulness of SOI fields for manipulation of magnetization by current in GaMnAs films.

Recently, time-of-flight LiDAR using the single-photon detection approach has emerged as a potential solution for three-dimensional imaging in challenging measurement scenarios, such as over distances of many kilometres. The high sensitivity and picosecond timing resolution afforded by single-photon detection offers high-resolution depth profiling of remote, complex scenes while maintaining low power optical illumination. These properties are ideal for imaging in highly scattering environments such as through atmospheric obscurants, for example fog and smoke. In this paper we present the reconstruction of depth profiles of moving objects through high levels of obscurant equivalent to five attenuation lengths between transceiver and target at stand-off distances up to 150 m. We used a robust statistically based processing algorithm designed for the real time reconstruction of single-photon data obtained in the presence of atmospheric obscurant, including providing uncertainty estimates in the depth reconstruction. This demonstration of real-time 3D reconstruction of moving scenes points a way forward for high-resolution imaging from mobile platforms in degraded visual environments.

This paper investigates the stability of an incompressible viscous fluid flow between relatively moving horizontal parallel plates in the presence of a uniform vertical throughflow. A linear stability analysis has been performed by employing the method of normal modes and the resulting stability equation is solved numerically using the Chebyshev collocation method. Contrary to the stability of plane Couette flow (PCF) to small disturbances for all values of the Reynolds number in the absence of vertical throughflow, it is found that PCF becomes unstable owing to the change in the sign of growth rate depending on the magnitude of throughflow. The critical Reynolds number triggering the instability is computed for different values of throughflow dependent Reynolds number and it is shown that throughflow instills both stabilizing and destabilizing effect on the base flow. It is seen that the direction of throughflow has no influence on the stability of fluid flow. A comparative study between plane Poiseuille flow and PCF has also been carried out and the similarities and differences are highlighted.

Recently many works on magnetic memories and logic circuits, which use a magnetic skyrmion have been reported. Previously we micromagnetically simulated a method to switch a chirality of a magnetic skyrmion formed in a magnetic thin film by introducing a pulsed heat spot. In this paper, we propose a method to discriminate the chirality of a skyrmion in a branched nanowire by using spin–orbit torque (SOT) and spin-transfer torque (STT), and confirm the validity of the method by using simulation. The simulated results show that the motion changes depending on the chirality when additional SOT is applied on a skyrmion moving in a branch by STT. This method can be used as a fundamental building block for electrical detection in memory and logic devices using the chirality of skyrmions as a data bit in addition to the presence (and polarity) of the skyrmions as conventionally used, which can be lead to multiple-valued operation.

The development of new methods for generating pulsed electromagnetic microwave radiation is currently an actively developing area of research. Schemes for microwave radiation generation with optical pumping are of great interest. In this paper we propose and experimentally demonstrate principally new method for photonic generation of microwave electromagnetic radiation. This method is based on the use of radiation of charged submicron particles oscillating at their own acoustic frequency. Laser radiation of the optical range implements an effective buildup of acoustic vibrations of submicron particles forming the system under study, according to the Raman mechanism.

The design of micropolarizer array (MPA) patterns in Fourier domain provides an efficient approach to reconstruct and investigate the polarization information. Inspired by Alenin’s works, in this paper, we propose an improved design model to cover both 2 × N MPAs and other original MPAs, by which an entirely new class of MPA patterns is suggested. The performance of the new patterns is evaluated through Fourier domain analysis and numerical simulations compared with the existing MPAs. Particularly, we analyze the reconstruction accuracy of the first three Stokes parameters and degree of linear polarization (DoLP) in detail. The experimental results confirm that the 2 × 2 × 2 MPA provides the highest reconstruction quality of s0, s1, s2 and DoLP in terms of quantitative measures and visual quality, while the 3 × 3 diagonal MPA achieves the state-of-the-art best results in case of single-snapshot systems. The guidance of this extended model and new diagonal MPAs show its massive potential for the division of focal plane (DoFP) polarization imaging applications.

Tetragonal ($${\hbox{L1}}_{0}$$ L1 0 ) FeNi is a promising material for high-performance rare-earth-free permanent magnets. Pure tetragonal FeNi is very difficult to synthesize due to its low chemical order–disorder transition temperature ($$\approx {593}$$ ≈ 593 K), and thus one must consider alternative non-equilibrium processing routes and alloy design strategies that make the formation of tetragonal FeNi feasible. In this paper, we investigate by density functional theory as implemented in the exact muffin-tin orbitals method whether alloying FeNi with a suitable element can have a positive impact on the phase formation and ordering properties while largely maintaining its attractive intrinsic magnetic properties. We find that small amount of non-magnetic (Al and Ti) or magnetic (Cr and Co) elements increase the order–disorder transition temperature. Adding Mo to the Co-doped system further enhances the ordering temperature while the Curie temperature is decreased only by a few degrees. Our results show that alloying is a viable route to stabilizing the ordered tetragonal phase of FeNi.

Scientific reports 11(1), 5844 (2021). doi:10.1038/s41598-021-85451-8, An electron beam of very high energy (50���250 MeV) can potentially produce a more favourable radiotherapy dose distribution compared to a state-of-the-art photon based radiotherapy technique. To produce an electron beam of sufficiently high energy to allow for a long penetration depth (several cm), very large accelerating structures are needed when using conventional radio-frequency technology, which may not be possible due to economical or spatial constraints. In this paper, we show transport and focusing of laser wakefield accelerated electron beams with a maximum energy of 160 MeV using electromagnetic quadrupole magnets in a point-to-point imaging configuration, yielding a spatial uncertainty of less than 0.1 mm, a total charge variation below $1 \%$ and a focal spot of $2.3 \times 2.6\;{\text {mm}}^2$. The electron beam was focused to control the depth dose distribution and to improve the dose conformality inside a phantom of cast acrylic slabs and radiochromic film. The phantom was irradiated from 36 different angles to obtain a dose distribution mimicking a stereotactic radiotherapy treatment, with a peak fractional dose of 2.72 Gy and a total maximum dose of 65 Gy. With the rapid growth of optical-based neuroimaging to explore human brain functioning, our research group has been developing broadband Near Infrared Spectroscopy (bNIRS) instruments, a technological extension to functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). bNIRS has the unique capacity of monitoring brain haemodynamics/oxygenation (measuring oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin), and metabolism (measuring the changes in the redox state of cytochrome-c-oxidase). When combined with electroencephalography (EEG), bNIRS provides a unique neuromonitoring platform to explore neurovascular coupling mechanisms. In this paper, we present a novel pipeline for the integrated analysis of bNIRS and EEG signals, and demonstrate its use on multi-channel bNIRS data recorded with concurrent EEG on healthy adults during a visual stimulation task. We introduce the use of the Finite Impulse Response functions within the General Linear Model for bNIRS and show its feasibility to statistically localize the haemodynamic and metabolic activity in the occipital cortex. Moreover, our results suggest that the fusion of haemodynamic and metabolic measures unveils additional information on brain functioning over haemodynamic imaging alone. The cross-correlation-based analysis of interrelationships between electrical (EEG) and haemodynamic/metabolic (bNIRS) activity revealed that the bNIRS metabolic signal offers a unique marker of brain activity, being more closely coupled to the neuronal EEG response.

Recent demonstrations have shown that frequency-diverse computational imaging systems can greatly simplify conventional architectures developed for imaging by transferring constraints into the digital layer. Here, in order to limit the latency and processing burden involved in image reconstruction, we propose to truncate insignificant principal components of the sensing matrix that links the measurements to the scene to be imaged. In contrast to recent work using principle component analysis to synthesize scene illuminations, our generic approach is fully unsupervised and is applied directly to the sensing matrix. We impose no restrictions on the type of imageable scene, no training data is required, and no actively reconfigurable radiating apertures are employed. This paper paves the way to the constitution of a new degree of freedom in image reconstructions, allowing one to place the performance emphasis either on image quality or latency and computational burden. The application of such relaxations will be essential for widespread deployment of computational microwave and millimeter wave imagers in scenarios such as security screening. We show in this specific context that it is possible to reduce both the processing time and memory consumption with a minor impact on the quality of the reconstructed images.

Research on the wettability of soft matter is one of the most urgently needed studies in the frontier domains, of which the wetting phenomenon of droplets on soft substrates is a hot subject. Scholars have done considerable studies on the wetting phenomenon of single-layer structure, but it is noted that the wetting phenomenon of stratified structure is ubiquitous in nature, such as oil exploitation from geological structural layers and shale gas recovery from shale formations. Therefore, the wettability of droplets on layered elastic gradient soft substrate is studied in this paper. Firstly, considering capillary force, elastic force and surface tension, the constitutive equation of the substrate in the vector function system is derived by using the vector function system in cylindrical coordinates, and the transfer relation of layered structure is obtained. Further, the integral expressions of displacement and stress of double Bessel function are given. Secondly, the numerical results of displacement and stress are obtained by using the numerical formula of double Bessel function integral. The results show that the deformation of the substrate weakens with the increase of the elastic modulus, also the displacement and stress change dramatically near the contact line, while the variation is flat when the contact radius is far away from the droplet radius.

A strain profile measurement technique using a chirped fibre Bragg grating (CFBG) sensor by implementing an integration of differences (IOD) method is reported in this paper. Using the IOD method the spatial distribution of strain along the length of the CFBG is extracted from its power reflectance spectra. As a proof of concept demonstration, the developed technique is applied to measure the polymerisation shrinkage strain profile of a photo-cured polymer dental composite which exhibits a non-uniform strain distribution attributed to the curing lamp characteristics. The result from the CFBG technique is compared with that of an FBG array embedded in the dental composite and is correlated with the degree of conversion of the material which also depends on the curing lamp intensity distribution. This technology will have significant impact and applications in a range of medical, materials and engineering areas where strain or temperature gradient profile measurement is required in smaller scales.

We report an experimental demonstration of positive–negative sub-wavelength interference without correlation. Typically, people can achieve sub-wavelength effects with correlation measurement no matter by using bi-photon or thermal light sources. In this paper, we adopt a thermal light source, and we count the realizations in which the intensities of the definite symmetric points are above or below a certain threshold. The distribution of numbers of these realizations which meet the restriction will show a sub-wavelength effect. With proper constrictions, positive and negative interference patterns are demonstrated.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding for visual observation applications, such as windows utilized in military or aerospace, is important but difficult to realize due to conventional materials having difficulty in achieving sufficient transparency and EMI shielding simultaneously. In this paper, we present multilayered structures based on salt water for simultaneous highly optical transparency (OT) and EM shielding effectiveness (SE) performance. In the proposed structures, planar acrylic and glass were used as two types of clear substrates to hold salt water. The measured OT of both acrylic/salt water/acrylic and glass/salt water/glass structures was higher than 90% with a nearly uniform light transmission, which introduced a negligible impact on optical observation. Furthermore, both simulations and experimental results demonstrated that the SE of the multilayer structure was higher than 20 dB in the X-band from 7.5 to 8.5 GHz. Moreover, the SE was significantly enhanced by increasing the thickness of the salt water layer. Especially, both OT and SE of the multilayered structures were improved simultaneously by increasing the salinity of the salt water. These proposed structures demonstrate great potential in EMI shielding observation applications.

This paper presents a physical frequency-diverse multimode lens-loaded cavity, designed and used for the purpose of the direction of arrival (DoA) estimation in millimetre-wave frequency bands for 5G and beyond. The multi-mode mechanism is realized using an electrically-large cavity, generating spatio-temporally incoherent radiation masks leveraging the frequency-diversity principle. It has been shown for the first time that by placing a spherical constant dielectric lens (constant-ϵr) in front of the radiating aperture of the cavity, the spatial incoherence of the radiation modes can be enhanced. The lens-loaded cavity requires only a single lens and output port, making the hardware development much simpler and cost-effective compared to conventional DoA estimators where multiple antennas and receivers are classically required. Using the lens-loaded architecture, an increase of up to 6 dB is achieved in the peak gain of the synthesized quasi-random sampling bases from the frequency-diverse cavity. Despite the fact that the practical frequency-diverse cavity uses a limited subset of quasi-orthogonal modes below the upper bound limit of the number of theoretical modes, it is shown that the proposed lens-loaded cavity is capable of accurate DoA estimation. This is achieved thanks to the sufficient orthogonality of the leveraged modes and to the presence of the spherical constant-ϵr lens which increases the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the received signal. Experimental results are shown to verify the proposed approach.

Private Set Intersection Cardinality (PSI-CA) and Private Set Union Cardinality (PSU-CA) are two cryptographic primitives whereby two or more parties are able to obtain the cardinalities of the intersection and the union of their respective private sets, and the privacy of their sets is preserved. In this paper, we propose a three-party protocol to finish these tasks by using quantum resources, where every two, as well as three, parties can obtain the cardinalities of the intersection and the union of their private sets with the help of a semi-honest third party (TP). In our protocol, GHZ states play a role in encoding private information that will be used by TP to compute the cardinalities. We show that the presented protocol is secure against well-known quantum attacks. In addition, we analyze the influence of six typical kinds of Markovian noise on our protocol.

Integrated ring laser gyroscopes are perfect candidates for small-sized and high-performance gyroscopes. However, the performance of the ring laser gyroscope (RLG) near zero angular velocity is fundamentally restricted by the mode locking effect. In the paper the magneto-optical ring resonator is studied as a sensitive element of the integrated RLG. The counter-propagating waves are generated at the same frequency for resonator at rest and are spatially split. It is shown that the spatial splitting of modes in such a resonator drastically suppresses the mode locking problem even at the near zero angular velocity.

In 2000, a non-field analytical method for solving various problems of energy and information transport has been developed by Kulish and Lage. Based on the Laplace transform technique, this elegant method yields closed-form solutions written in the form of integral equations, which relate local values of an intensive properties such as, for instance, velocity, mass concentration, temperature with the corresponding derivative, that is, shear stress, mass flux, temperature gradient. Over the past 20 years, applied to solving numerous problems of energy and information transport, the method—now known as the method of Kulish—proved to be very efficient. In this paper—for the first time—the method is applied to problems in aeroacoustic. As a result, an integral relation between the local values of the acoustic pressure and the corresponding velocity perturbation has been derived. The said relation is valid for axisymmetric cases of planar, cylindrical and spherical geometries.

The mechanisms underlying the emergence of leadership in multi-agent systems are under investigation in many areas of research where group coordination is involved. Nonverbal leadership has been mostly investigated in the case of animal groups, and only a few works address the problem in human ensembles, e.g. pedestrian walking, group dance. In this paper we study the emergence of leadership in the specific scenario of a small walking group. Our aim is to propose a rigorous mathematical methodology capable of unveiling the mechanisms of leadership emergence in a human group when leader or follower roles are not designated a priori. Two groups of participants were asked to walk together and turn or change speed at self-selected times. Data were analysed using time-dependent cross correlation to infer leader-follower interactions between each pair of group members. The results indicate that leadership emergence is due both to contextual factors, such as an individual’s position in the group, and to personal factors, such as an individual’s characteristic locomotor behaviour. Our approach can easily be extended to larger groups and other scenarios such as team sports and emergency evacuations.

In recent years, the techniques of the exact sciences have been applied to the analysis of increasingly complex and non-linear systems. The related uncertainties and the large amounts of data available have progressively shown the limits of the traditional hypothesis driven methods, based on first principle theories. Therefore, a new approach of data driven theory formulation has been developed. It is based on the manipulation of symbols with genetic computing and it is meant to complement traditional procedures, by exploring large datasets to find the most suitable mathematical models to interpret them. The paper reports on the vast amounts of numerical tests that have shown the potential of the new techniques to provide very useful insights in various studies, ranging from the formulation of scaling laws to the original identification of the most appropriate dimensionless variables to investigate a given system. The application to some of the most complex experiments in physics, in particular thermonuclear plasmas, has proved the capability of the methodology to address real problems, even highly nonlinear and practically important ones such as catastrophic instabilities. The proposed tools are therefore being increasingly used in various fields of science and they constitute a very good set of techniques to bridge the gap between experiments, traditional data analysis and theory formulation.

Link prediction in a complex network is a problem of fundamental interest in network science and has attracted increasing attention in recent years. It aims to predict missing (or future) links between two entities in a complex system that are not already connected. Among existing methods, local similarity indices are most popular that take into account the information of common neighbours to estimate the likelihood of existence of a connection between two nodes. In this paper, we propose global and quasi-local extensions of some commonly used local similarity indices. We have performed extensive numerical simulations on publicly available datasets from diverse domains demonstrating that the proposed extensions not only give superior performance, when compared to their respective local indices, but also outperform some of the current, state-of-the-art, local and global link-prediction methods.

Quantum catalysis is a feasible approach to increase the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD), involving the special zero-photon catalysis (ZPC) operation. However, in the practical point of view, the improvement effect of this operation will be limited by the imperfection of the photon detector. In this paper, we show that the ZPC operation at the sender can be simulated by a post-selection method without implementing it in practical devices. While performing this virtual version of ZPC in CVQKD, we can not only reach the ideal case of its practical implementation with minimal hardware requirement, but also keep the benefit of Gaussian security proofs. Based on Gaussian modulated coherent state protocols with achievable parameters, we enhance the security of the proposed scheme from the asymptotical case to the finite-size scenario and composable framework. Simulation results show that similar to the asymptotical case, both the maximal transmission distance and the tolerable excess noise of virtual ZPC-involved CVQKD outperform the original scheme and the scheme using virtual photon subtraction while considering finite-size effect and composable security. In addition, the virtual ZPC-involved CVQKD can tolerate a higher imperfection of the detector, enabling its practical implementation of the CVQKD system with state-of-the-art technology.

The spread of SARS-COV-2 has affected many economic and social systems. This paper aims at estimating the impact on regional productive systems in Italy of the interplay between the epidemic and the mobility restriction measures put in place to contain the contagion. We focus then on the economic consequences of alternative lockdown lifting schemes. We leverage a massive dataset of human mobility which describes daily movements of over four million individuals in Italy and we model the epidemic spreading through a metapopulation SIR model, which provides the fraction of infected individuals in each Italian district. To quantify economic backslashes this information is combined with socio-economic data. We then carry out a scenario analysis to model the transition to a post-lockdown phase and analyze the economic outcomes derived from the interplay between (a) the timing and intensity of the release of mobility restrictions and (b) the corresponding scenarios on the severity of virus transmission rates. Using a simple model for the spreading disease and parsimonious assumptions on the relationship between the infection and the associated economic backlashes, we show how different policy schemes tend to induce heterogeneous distributions of losses at the regional level depending on mobility restrictions. Our work shed lights on how recovery policies need to balance the interplay between mobility flows of disposable workers and the diffusion of contagion.

A novel and feasible solution to generate plane spiral orbital angular momentum (PSOAM) vortex beam is proposed in this paper. The general principle of generating PSOAM in circular antenna array (CAA) is deduced, and verified by the simulation of the dipole CAA. Four double-slot Vivaldi antenna elements connect sequentially and are inserted into a CAA, which makes the proposed antenna easily fabricated and fully miniaturized. Both simulated and measured results show that it can generate PSOAM with l = 3 (l is the mode number of vortex wave) at 5 GHz. The vortex phase of l = 3 is observed, the measured peak gain is 5.7 dB. The VSWR remains below 2 from 4 to 6 GHz, which shows the impedance bandwidth of S11

In this paper, the acoustic impedance property has been employed to predict the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) of pure metals and alloys. Novel algorithms were developed, depending on three experimentally measured parameters, and programmed in a MATLAB code. The measured parameters are longitudinal wave velocity of the metal, density, and crystal structure. 19-samples were considered in the study and divided into 3-groups according to their crystal structure; 7-FCC, 6-BCC, and 6-HCB. X-ray diffraction was used to examine the crystal structure of each sample of each group, while longitudinal wave velocity and metals’ density were measured experimentally. A comparison between mechanical properties predicted by the model and the ASTM standards was done to investigate the validity of the model. Furthermore, predicted stress–strain curves were compared with corresponding curves in the pieces literature as an additional validation check. The results revealed the excellence of the model with 85–99% prediction accuracy. The study also proved that if metals are grouped according to their crystal structure, a relation between UTS, YS, and modulus of elasticity (E) properties and wave pressure transmission coefficient (Tr) could be formulated.

In this paper, we introduce a non-invasive optical method, named Paraxial Self-Reference Interferometry (PSRI) for thickness measurement of liquid films. The method can be used for thin or thick layers (from μm to mm) of solids or liquids, with a high precision. The method is first applied to solid plates with known thickness and is verified to be accurate. Then we use it for the thickness measurement of liquid films in two experiments. The first experiment is spin coating and the second is dip coating. In both experiments, the results are in agreement with theoretical and experimental results of previous works. In the dip coating experiment, the Landau-Levich-Derjaguin law (LLD) is observed in low capillary numbers, and a deviation from this law due to gravity is seen in higher capillary numbers. The thinning due to the drainage is also observed and is consistent with theoretical predictions.

This paper presents a study of noise in room-temperature THz radiometers that use THz-to-optical upconversion followed by optical detection of thermal radiation. Despite some undesired upconverted thermal noise, no noise is intrinsically introduced by efcient electro-optic modulation via a sumfrequency-generation process in high quality factor (Q) whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators. However, coherent and incoherent optical detection results in fundamentally diferent noise characteristics. The analysis shows that the upconversion receiver is quantum limited like conventional amplifers and mixers, only when optical homodyne or heterodyne detection is performed. However, this type of receiver shows advantages as a THz photon counter, where counting is in the optical domain. Theoretical predictions show that upconversion-based room-temperature receivers can outperform state-of-the-art cooled and room-temperature THz receivers based on low-noise amplifers and mixers, provided that a photon conversion efciency greater than 1% is realized. Although the detection bandwidth is naturally narrow due to the highly resonant electro-optic modulator, it is not fundamentally limited and can be broadened by engineering selective optical coupling mechanisms to the resonator. In practical applications of signal detection, the roughness of a target surface significantly affects detection efficiency. In this paper, we propose a signal processing method that improves the sensitivity of a detection system by up to 100 times. In experiments, the target vibration measurement system successfully captured an automotive vibration power spectrum using the proposed signal processing method. This technology opens a new avenue for development in the field of rough surface target detection and recognition.

Selective area thermal etching (SATE) of gallium nitride is a simple subtractive process for creating novel device architectures and improving the structural and optical quality of III-nitride-based devices. In contrast to plasma etching, it allows, for example, the creation of enclosed features with extremely high aspect ratios without introducing ion-related etch damage. We report how SATE can create uniform and organized GaN nanohole arrays from c-plane and (11–22) semi-polar GaN in a conventional MOVPE reactor. The morphology, etching anisotropy and etch depth of the nanoholes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy for a broad range of etching parameters, including the temperature, the pressure, the NH3 flow rate and the carrier gas mixture. The supply of NH3 during SATE plays a crucial role in obtaining a highly anisotropic thermal etching process with the formation of hexagonal non-polar-faceted nanoholes. Changing other parameters affects the formation, or not, of non-polar sidewalls, the uniformity of the nanohole diameter, and the etch rate, which reaches 6 µm per hour. Finally, the paper discusses the SATE mechanism within a MOVPE environment, which can be applied to other mask configurations, such as dots, rings or lines, along with other crystallographic orientations.

The real-time monitoring technology plays a significant role in the field of laser aided manufacturing. It not only ensures the product quality, but also saves time and expenditure on the subsequent testing. To develop a method to monitor the properties of laser molten zone, in this paper, the AISI4140 steel samples were melted by laser with different parameters. At the same time, the plasma spectra were detected during real-time laser processing. The evolutions for both emission spectra and hardness of molten zone were researched in this work. To correlate the intensity of spectral line with the hardness of molten zone, the method of dimensionless analysis was used in this experiment. As the results shown, in a dimensionless system, there was a linear correlation between dimensionless micro-hardness of molten zone (H*) and dimensionless laser energy density(ln(δ*)); the dimensionless micro-hardness could be expressed by a piecewise function using dimensionless intensity of Fe I spectral lines(I*), dimensionless velocity(v*) and dimensionless laser energy density as variables; depending on the quantitative relation among all dimensionless, a monitoring system of hardness of molten zone was established; by testing under different parameters of laser processing, the mean error of prediction is lower than 3.1%. It means the emission spectroscopy can be a potential way to monitor the properties of parts prepared by laser processing.

In this paper, we study the relativistic effects in a three-body bound state. For this purpose, the relativistic form of the Faddeev equations is solved in momentum space as a function of the Jacobi momentum vectors without using a partial wave decomposition. The inputs for the three-dimensional Faddeev integral equation are the off-shell boost two-body t–matrices, which are calculated directly from the boost two-body interactions by solving the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. The matrix elements of the boost interactions are obtained from the nonrelativistic interactions by solving a nonlinear integral equation using an iterative scheme. The relativistic effects on three-body binding energy are calculated for the Malfliet-Tjon potential. Our calculations show that the relativistic effects lead to a roughly 2% reduction in the three-body binding energy. The contribution of different Faddeev components in the normalization of the relativistic three-body wave function is studied in detail. The accuracy of our numerical solutions is tested by calculation of the expectation value of the three-body mass operator, which shows an excellent agreement with the relativistic energy eigenvalue.

Understanding the thermal stability of metallic glasses is critical to determining their safe temperatures of service. In this paper, the crystallization mechanism in spark plasma sintered Fe48Cr15Mo14Y2C15B6 metallic glass is established by analyzing the crystal size distribution using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and in-situ small angle neutron scattering. Isothermal annealing at 700 °C and 725 °C for 100 min resulted in the formation of (Fe,Cr)23C6 crystals, measured from transmission electron micrographs, to be from 10 to 30 nm. The small angle neutron scattering intensity measured in-situ, over a Q-range of 0.02 to 0.3 Å−1, during isothermal annealing of the sintered samples, confirmed the presence of (Fe,Cr)23C6 crystals. The measured scattering intensity, fitted by the maximum entropy model, over the Q-range of 0.02 to 0.06 Å−1, revealed that the crystals had radii ranging from 3 to 18 nm. The total volume fraction of crystals were estimated to be 0.13 and 0.22 upon isothermal annealing at 700 °C and 725 °C for 100 min respectively. The mechanism of crystallization in this spark plasma sintered iron based metallic glass was established to be from pre-existing nuclei as confirmed by Avrami exponents of 0.25 ± 0.01 and 0.39 ± 0.01 at the aforesaid temperatures.

This paper presented a conformal smoothing theory, and smoothing capability evaluation was established on the proposed theory. According to pressure distribution model, processing parameters have been optimized and the CPP sample with a size of 340 × 340 mm was applied in conformal smoothing. The middle spatial frequency was effectively corrected with the total polishing time of 750 min, and energy was constringed 32.2 times (improved from 57.68 nm2·mm to 1.79 nm2·mm). Meanwhile, surface roughness RMS (root mean square) maintained at the same scale (changed from 265.4 nm to 265.2 nm). Parametric conformal smoothing was proven to be an effective method to control the middle spatial frequency error of CPPs.

This paper portrays the dynamics of pine wilt disease. The specific formula for reproduction number is accomplished. Global behavior is completely demonstrated on the basis of the basic reproduction number $${{\boldsymbol{R}}}_{{\boldsymbol{o}}}$$Ro. The disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable for $${{\boldsymbol{R}}}_{{\boldsymbol{o}}}{\boldsymbol{ < }}{\bf{1}}$$Ro<1 and in such a case, the endemic equilibrium does not exist. If $${{\boldsymbol{R}}}_{{\boldsymbol{o}}}$$Ro exceeds one, the disease persists and the unique endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. Global stability of disease-free equilibrium is proved using a Lyapunov function. A graph-theoretic approach is applied to show the global stability of the unique endemic equilibrium. Sensitivity analysis has been established and control strategies have been designed on the basis of sensitivity analysis.

The realization of reversed Doppler effects in double-negative acoustic metamaterials remains challenging. This paper demonstrates the reversed Doppler effect associated with sound wave propagation in negative group velocity in hybridized metamaterial (HM) system using a simple Mie-resonator configuration. Double-negative acoustic parameters act simultaneously on the effective dynamic bulk modulus and mass density within overlapped frequency region of multiple Mie resonances. Notably, while ordinary media exhibits higher received frequency during the approach and lower during the recession, we observe that in HM the detected signals show redshift compared to the emitted frequency when approaching to the source while depict blue shift when receding from the source. On this basis, the HM exhibits negative phase velocity with reversed wavefronts and negative refraction effect for certain frequency range. Focusing of sound waves emitted from a point source is further realized with a flat lens composed by such a HM slab.

The Arrhenius activation energy and binary chemical reaction are taken into account to consider the magnetohydrodynamic mixed convection second grade nanofluid flow through a porous medium in the presence of thermal radiation, heat absorption/generation, buoyancy effects and entropy generation. The items composing of the governing systems are degenerated to nonlinear ordinary differential equations by adopting the appropriate similarity transformations which are computed through Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg (RKF) numerical technique along with Shooting method. The solution is manifested through graphs which provides a detailed explanations of each profile in terms of involved parameters effects. The compared results maintain outstanding approach to the previous papers.

Recalescence rate (R) in cooling curve is well known that affected by undercooling in solidification, but the accurate relationship of them is not clear yet. In this paper, based on the undercooled solidification of Fe-B alloy, the factor affected on recalescence process was investigated. The relationship R = VΔT/D was first found, where V is the growth velocity, ΔT the recalescence degree (approximate the undercooling), D the focus region diameter dependent on the distance of the pyrometer. With this result the solidification interface growth velocity can be predicted from recalescence of cooling curve, vice versa. In addition, an approximate relation between growth velocity and the size of the critical nucleus was shown.

Free-Space Optical (FSO) systems offer the ability to distribute high speed digital links into remote and rural communities where terrain, installation cost or infrastructure security pose critical hurdles to deployment. A challenge in any point-to-point FSO system is initiating and maintaining optical alignment from the sender to the receiver. In this paper we propose and demonstrate a low-complexity self-aligning FSO prototype that can completely self-align with no requirement for initial manual positioning and could therefore form the opto-mechanical basis for a mesh network of optical transceivers. The prototype utilises off-the-shelf consumer electrical components and a bespoke alignment algorithm. We demonstrate an eight fibre spatially multiplexed link with a loss of 15 dB over 210 m.

Commercial light emitting diode (LED) materials - blue (i.e., InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) for display and lighting), green (i.e., InGaN/GaN MQWs for display), and red (i.e., Al0.05Ga0.45In0.5P/Al0.4Ga0.1In0.5P for display) are evaluated in range of temperature (77–800) K for future applications in high density power electronic modules. The spontaneous emission quantum efficiency (QE) of blue, green, and red LED materials with different wavelengths was calculated using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The spontaneous emission QE was obtained based on a known model so-called the ABC model. This model has been recently used extensively to calculate the internal quantum efficiency and its droop in the III-nitride LED. At 800 K, the spontaneous emission quantum efficiencies are around 40% for blue for lighting and blue for display LED materials, and it is about 44.5% for green for display LED materials. The spontaneous emission QE is approximately 30% for red for display LED material at 800 K. The advance reported in this paper evidences the possibility of improving high temperature optocouplers with an operating temperature of 500 K and above.
