Surface potential in a topological matter could unprecedentedly localize the waves. However, this surface potential is yet to be exploited in topological photonic systems. Here, we demonstrate that photonic surface states can be induced and controlled by the surface potential in a dielectric double gyroid (DG) photonic crystal. The basis translation in a unit cell enables tuning of the surface potential, which in turn regulates the degree of wave localization. The gradual modulation of DG photonic crystals enables the generation of a pseudomagnetic field. Overall, this study shows the interplay between surface potential and pseudomagnetic field regarding the surface states. The physical consequences outlined herein not only widen the scope of surface states in 3D photonic crystals but also highlight the importance of surface treatments in a photonic system. The coupling between two or more objects can generally be categorized as strong or weak. In cavity quantum electrodynamics for example, when the coupling strength is larger than the loss rate the coupling is termed strong, and otherwise it is dubbed weak. Ultrastrong coupling, where the interaction energy is of the same order of magnitude as the bare energies of the uncoupled objects, presents a new paradigm for quantum physics and beyond. As a consequence profound changes to well established phenomena occur, for instance the ground state in an ultrastrongly coupled system is not empty but hosts virtual excitations due to the existence of processes which do not conserve the total number of excitations. The implications of ultrastrong coupling for quantum topological systems, where the number of excitations are typically conserved, remain largely unknown despite the great utility of topological matter. Here we reveal how the delicate interplay between ultrastrong coupling and topological states manifests in a one-dimensional array. We study theoretically a dimerized chain of two-level systems within the ultrastrong coupling regime, where the combined saturation and counter-rotating terms in the Hamiltonian are shown to play pivotal roles in the rich, multi-excitation effective bandstructure. In particular, we uncover unusual topological edge states, we introduce a flavour of topological state which we call an anti-edge state, and we reveal the remarkable geometric-dependent renormalizations of the quantum vaccum. Taken together, our results provide a route map for experimentalists to characterize and explore a prototypical system in the emerging field of ultrastrong quantum topology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twisted moiré van der Waals heterostructures hold promise to provide a robust quantum simulation platform for strongly correlated materials and realize elusive states of matter such as topological states in the laboratory. We demonstrated that the moiré bands of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero-nanoribbons exhibit non-trivial topological order due to the tendency of valence and conduction band states in K valleys to form giant band gaps when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is taken into account. Among the features of twisted WS 2 /MoS 2 and WSe 2 /MoSe 2 , we found that the heavy fermions associated with the topological flat bands and the presence of strongly correlated states, enhance anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) away from the magic angle. By band analysis, we showed that the topmost conduction bands from the ± K-valleys are perfectly flat and carry a spin/valley Chern number. Moreover, we showed that the non-linear anomalous Hall effect in moiré TMD hetero-nanoribbons can be used to manipulate terahertz (THz) radiation. Our findings establish twisted heterostructures of group-VI TMD nanoribbons as a tunable platform for engineering topological valley quantum phases and THz non-linear Hall conductivity. Weyl semimetals are a new class of topological materials possessing outstanding physical properties. We investigate the thermoelectric properties of a ballistic Weyl semimetal specimen connected to two normal contacts. We introduce a model to evaluate the thermoelectric coefficients of the junction and analyze its features along two distinct directions, one along the chiral axis of the Weyl semimetal and the other perpendicular to it. We demonstrate that the thermoelectric response of this junction depends on whether it is along the chiral axis of the Weyl semimetal or not. Electrical and thermal conductances of this junction reveal considerable dependence on the length and chemical potential of the Weyl semimetal layer. In particular, we observe that, decreasing the chemical potential in the normal contacts enhances the Seebeck coefficient and thermoelectric figure of merit of the junction to substantial values. Hence, we unveil that a ballistic junction of Weyl semimetal can serve as a fundamental segment for application in future thermoelectric devices for thermal energy harvesting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geometric phase is an important tool to define the topology of the Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems. Besides, the range of coupling plays an important role in realizing higher topological indices and transition among them. With a motivation to understand the geometric phases for mixed states, we discuss finite temperature analysis of Hermitian and non-Hermitian topological models with extended range of couplings. To understand the geometric phases for the mixed states, we use Uhlmann phase and discuss the merit-limitation with respect extended range couplings. We extend the finite temperature analysis to non-Hermitian models and define topological invariant for different ranges of coupling. We include the non-Hermitian skin effect, and provide the derivation of topological invariant in the generalized Brillouin zone and their mixed state behavior also. We also adopt mixed geometric phases through interferometric approach, and discuss the geometric phases of extended-range (Hermitian and non-Hermitian) models at finite temperature. Dynamical properties of two-component mass-imbalanced few-fermion systems confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap following a sudden quench of interactions are studied. It is assumed that initially the system is prepared in the non-interacting ground state and then, after a sudden quench of interactions, the unitary evolution is governed by interacting many-body Hamiltonian. By careful analysis of the evolution of the Loschmidt echo, density distributions of the components, and entanglement entropy between them, the role of mass imbalance and particle number imbalance on the system's evolution stability are investigated. All the quantities studied manifest a dramatic dependence on the number of heavy and lighter fermions in each component at a given quench strength. Symmetry-enforced nodal-line semimetals are immune to perturbations that preserve the underlying symmetries. This intrinsic robustness enables investigations of fundamental phenomena and applications utilizing diverse materials design techniques. The drawback of symmetry-enforced nodal-line semimetals is that the crossings of energy bands are constrained to symmetry-invariant momenta in the Brillouin zone. On the other end are accidental nodal-line semimetals whose band crossings, not being enforced by symmetry, are easily destroyed by perturbations. Some accidental nodal-line semimetals have, however, the advantage that their band crossings can occur in generic locations in the Brillouin zone, and thus can be repositioned to tailor material properties. We show that lattice engineering with periodic distributions of vacancies yields a hybrid type of nodal-line semimetals which possess symmetry-enforced nodal lines and accidental nodal lines, with the latter endowed with an enhanced robustness to perturbations. Both types of nodal lines are explained by a symmetry analysis of an effective model which captures the relevant characteristics of the proposed materials, and are verified by first-principles calculations of vacancy-engineered borophene polymorphs. Our findings offer an alternative path to relying on complicated compounds to design robust nodal-line semimetals; one can instead remove atoms from a common monoatomic material. We present a comprehensive analysis of the out-of-equilibrium Casimir pressure between two high- T c superconducting plates, each kept at a different temperature. Two interaction regimes can be distinguished. While the zero-point energy dominates in the near field, thermal effects become important at large interplate separations causing a drop in the force's magnitude compared with the usual thermal-equilibrium case. Our detailed calculations highlight the competing role played by propagating and evanescent modes. Moreover, as one of the plates undergoes the superconducting transition, we predict an abrupt change in the force for any plate distance, which has not been previously observed in other systems. The sensitivity of the dielectric function of the high- T c superconductors makes them ideal systems for a possible direct measurement of the out-of-equilibrium Casimir pressure.
