In this paper, an experimental evaluation of a newly developed flat plate double pass solar air heater combined with aluminum cans for drying red pepper was presented. The proposed solar dryer system was designed, modeled, and evaluated. Solar air heater trials were carried out using the absorber's top and bottom plate and aluminum cans for red pepper drying at Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. To test the solar dryer, 100 pieces of red paper were obtained from the Bahir Dar region of Ethiopia for the purpose of experimentation. Microsoft Excel was used to perform statistical analysis of eleven mathematical models. The results show that the mixed-mode solar greenhouse dryer takes less time to dry red pepper than the open solar dryer. In the midday, the solar insolation reached 973 W/m2 and the minimum solar insolation was 220 W/m2 and air is expelled at a rate of 0.0383 kg/s. According to the experimental results, the dryers chamber temperature ranged from 30.9 to 54 °C, while the ambient temperature was between 22.6 and 28.2 °C. The mixed-mode double pass achieves up to 46% and 28% efficiency when used with aluminum can dryers and conventional open sun dryers, respectively. A drying rate of 0.0003395 kg/s was achieved for the open sun dryer system and 0.0000365 kg/s for the mixed mode solar dryer. Using mixed-mode and open-sun solar dryers, the logarithmic model was found to be most effective in explaining the red pepper behavior. Furthermore, a comparison was made between the experimental and predicted moisture ratios through the calculation of the coefficient of determination (R2), the reduced chi-square (X2), and the root mean square error (RMSE). The results show that the logarithmic model achieved the highest value of the correlation coefficient (R2), which was determined to be 0.9978 and 0.9989, while the logarithmic model achieved the lowest value of Chi-square (X2). Understanding the temporal and spatial patterns of flood in the Awash River basin, which is located in Ethiopia's Afar region, is crucial. The Awash basin was picked because it is continuously in danger both spatially and temporally. The likelihood of flooding was assessed using eight independent variables: elevation, slope, rainfall, drainage density, land use, soil type, wetness index, and lineament density. Each constituent was assigned a weight based on its susceptibility to the danger, which was classified into four classifications. Exploratory regression analysis showed that the existing land use is the main factor influencing flood susceptibility. For the GIS domain, a total of 31 models were built using exploratory regression. Model number 31 was found to be the best fit model, having the highest Adjusted R2 value of 0.8 and the lowest Akaike's Information criterion value of 1536.8. The spatial autocorrelation tool's Z score and p-value for the standard residuals are, respectively, 0.7 and 0.4, indicating that they were neither clustered nor scattered. The paper presents statistical analysis of mechanical strength and linear density properties of deformed reinforcing Grade 60 steel bars. Two different lots of samples are identified based on test years for the years 2015–2017 as Lot 1 and 2018–2020 as Lot 2. Yield strength (YS), tensile strength (TS), elongation, mass per length and characteristic ratio of TS and YS are analyzed for rebar diameters of 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm considering both lots. Mechanical and linear density properties are compared statistically using range, mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variance, skewness and kurtosis of the recorded sets of values. Moreover, the results of YS, TS and elongation are analyzed separately by one-way analysis of variance for both lots. The result shows that the aggregate mean values of YS, TS and elongation for Lot 1 and Lot 2 are 593.1 MPa, 701.1 MPa, 14.78%; and 572.5 MPa, 673.8 MPa, 15.47%, respectively. Even though there is a slight decrement in values of YS and TS and increment in elongation from Lot 1 to Lot 2, both lots exceeded values recommended by ASTM A615 standard. Furthermore, with 95% confidence interval, one-way analysis of variance showed that the aggregate data of rebars are dissimilar in terms of YS, TS and percentage elongation with figures showing decrement from Lot 1 to Lot 2. Agricultural products are vital to the sustainability of the economies of developing countries. Most developing countries' economies such as Ethiopia heavily rely on agriculture. On a global scale, the pepper crop is one of the most important agricultural products in terms of human food security. However, it is susceptible to a variety of diseases which include blight leaf disease, gray leaf spot, common rust, fruit rot disease, powdery mildew symptoms on pepper leaf, and other related diseases that are all common today. Currently, more than 34 different pepper diseases have been discovered, resulting in a 33% average yield loss in pepper cultivation. Conventionally, farmers detect the disease using visual observation but this has its own demerits as it is usually not accurate and usually time consuming. In the past, a number of researchers have presented various methods for classifying pepper plant disease, especially using image processing and deep learning techniques. However, earlier studies have shown that binary classification requires improvement as some classes were more challenging to identify than others. In this study, we propose a concatenated neural network of the extracted features of VGG16 and AlexNet networks to develop a pepper disease classification model using fully connected layers. The development of the proposed concatenated CNN model includes steps such as dataset collection, image preprocessing, noise removal, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification. Finally, the proposed concatenated CNN model was evaluated, providing a training classification accuracy of 100%, validation accuracy of 97.29%, and testing accuracy of 95.82%. In general, it can be concluded from the findings of the study that the proposed concatenated model is suitable for identifying pepper leaf and fruit diseases from digital images of pepper. Maternal malnutrition is pervasive throughout the world, notably in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the effect of nutrition education on the nutritional status of pregnant women in urban settings in Southeast Ethiopia. A community-based two-arm parallel cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted among 447 randomly selected pregnant women attending antenatal care (224 intervention and 223 control). We used a multistage cluster sampling technique followed by systematic sampling to select the pregnant women. Pregnant women who participated in the intervention arm received six nutrition education sessions. Women in the control group received standard care. A nonstretchable mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) tape was used to measure the MUAC. A linear mixed effects model (LMM) was used to evaluate the effect of the intervention on MUAC, accounting for the clustering. The net mean ± standard error of MUAC between the intervention and control groups was 0.59 ± 0.05 (P < 0.0001). The multivariable LMM indicated that having received nutrition education interventions (β = 0.85, 95% CI 0.60, 1.12, P < 0.0001) improved the MUAC measurement of pregnant women. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the association between maternal education and completion of childhood vaccination among aged 12–23 months children in Ethiopia. Systematic review and meta-analysis. PubMed-Medline, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Global Health, and Google Scholar were searched for articles published from January 2010 to January 2020. The data extraction was reported based on the PRISMA guideline (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. We performed the I2 test and a funnel plot to assess heterogeneity and check for publication bias. We assessed 841 studies for eligibility, of which 43 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis, and 28 studies were fully accessed for meta-analysis. The overall pooled effect of this systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated a positive association between maternal education and completion of childhood vaccination. Having a primary level of maternal education was correlated with a 1.87 times higher likelihood (95% CI 1.76–1.98) of completing childhood vaccination compared to having no education. Furthermore, attending secondary education and above was associated with a 3.47 times higher likelihood (95% CI 3.18–3.78) of completing childhood vaccination compared to having no education. This systematic review and meta-analysis study revealed that as the level of maternal education increases, the completion of childhood vaccination accelerates. Therefore, investment in maternal education should be prioritized as an intervention. Asymptomatic malaria can impact existing malaria control and elimination efforts around the world, particularly in Africa, where the majority of malaria cases and death occurs. This is a cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of asymptomatic malaria among migrant farmworkers from June to July 2020 in the Upper Awash Agro-industry, East Shewa zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. A total of 254 migrant farmworkers without signs and symptoms of malaria were enrolled. Data on socio-demographic characteristics and malaria prevention practices were obtained through a structured questionnaire. Venous blood samples were collected and diagnosed using microscopy, rapid diagnostic tests, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Data were coded, entered, and analyzed using SPSS version-21 statistical software. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess associated factors. A p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The overall prevalence of asymptomatic malaria among farmworkers in this study was 5.1% [95% CI 1.6, 6.7]. The proportions of Plasmodium falciparum was 90.0% (9/10) while it was 10.0% (1/10) for Plasmodium vivax. Out of the microscopy and/or RDT-confirmed malaria cases, (n = 9; 100%) were confirmed to be P. falciparum by nested PCR, while (n = 3/122; 2.46%) were found to be P. falciparum among 50% negative cases with the microscopy and/or RDT. The gametocyte stage was detected in 40% of microscopically positive cases out of which 44.4% belongs to P. falciparum. Home area/origin of migrant laborers [AOR = 6.08, (95% CI 1.08, 34.66)], family history of malaria [AOR = 8.15, (95% CI 1.43, 46.44)], and outdoor sleeping [AOR = 10.14, (95% CI 1.15, 89.14)] were significantly associated with asymptomatic malaria. In conclusion, asymptomatic malaria was detected among farmworkers in the study area and it was significantly associated with outdoor sleeping, home area, and family history of malaria. Prevention tools and control strategies, particularly focusing on migrant farmworkers, should be considered to support the ongoing malaria control and elimination effort in Ethiopia. Exploring the factors influencing Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) and understanding its dynamics is crucial for planning and management. This understanding plays a pivotal role in supporting Africa's food security efforts to achieve various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Utilizing Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on data from the FAO website, spanning from 2000 to 2019, informative components are derived for dynamic spatio-temporal modeling of Africa's FSN Given the dynamic and evolving nature of the factors impacting FSN, despite numerous efforts to understand and mitigate food insecurity, existing models often fail to capture this dynamic nature. This study employs a Bayesian dynamic spatio-temporal approach to explore the interconnected dynamics of food security and its components in Africa. The results reveal a consistent pattern of elevated FSN levels, showcasing notable stability in the initial and middle-to-late stages, followed by a significant acceleration in the late stage of the study period. The Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia exhibited particularly noteworthy high levels of FSN dynamicity. In particular, child care factors and undernourishment factors showed significant dynamicity on FSN. This insight suggests establishing regional task forces or forums for coordinated responses to FSN challenges based on dynamicity patterns to prevent or mitigate the impact of potential food security crises. Globally one-third of global population are victims of anemia, significantly impacting maternal and infant health and linked to poor cognition, productivity, and mortality risks. We used randomly selected 4040 lactating mothers' record from nationally representative survey. Descriptive statistics were weighted, and the standard hemoglobin cutoff point (below 12 g/dl) was used. Bivariable and multivariable multilevel binary logistic regression model considering the individual and community-level factors associated with anemia was employed. Crude and adjusted odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval were reported. In Ethiopia, 32.3% (95% CI 30.9–33.7%) of lactating women were anemic, with 23.4% having mild, 7.3% moderate, and 1.2% severe anemia. Pastoral regions (Afar, Somalia, and Oromia region) had higher burden of anemia than the others. The advanced age of the mother above 45 years (AOR = 1.43 (1.11–1.82), unemployment (AOR = 1.19; 95% CI 1.08–1.32), household wealth index (AOR = 0.56; 95% CI 0.50–0.63), extended family size (AOR = 1.20; 95% CI 1.04–1.46), and not using family planning (AOR = 1.70; 95% CI 1.49–1.93) were significant factors associated with anemia. Tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter], an ancient cereal primarily grown in Ethiopia, is becoming increasingly popular worldwide due to its high iron content and gluten-free nature. However, it has been reported that injera produced only with tef flour lack certain vital nutrients. Therefore, this specific study was conducted to supplement tef injera with other food materials of better nutritional value and compensate its expensive market price with sorghum cereal flour. The effect of fermentation conditions, and the sorghum and carrot pulp blending ratio on the nutritional value and sensory quality of tef injera was investigated. The factorial approach of the experimental design was conducted considering the nutritional value and sensory quality of the injera made of three main blending ratios of tef, sorghum, and carrot (60% tef: 30% sorghum: 10% carrot pulp, 45% tef: 45% sorghum: 10% carrot pulp and 30% tef: 60% sorghum: 10% carrot pulp) as experiential variables. The raw materials and injera were characterised for their proximate composition, physicochemical property, mineral composition, microbial analysis, and sensory attributes, using standard methods. The results of the study show that fermentation conditions and blending ratios have a significant effect on the nutritional, anti-nutritional, mineral content, microbial quality, and sensory properties of blended injera products, where higher values of ash, crude protein, crude fat, Total titratable acidity (TTA), Fe, Zn, and Ca (2.30%, 11.34%, 2.62%, 3.53, 32.97 mg/100 g, 2.98 mg/100 g and 176.85 mg/100 g, respectively) were analyzed for the co-fermented injera sample. In addition, a lower microbial count was observed in co-fermented injera samples, whereas microbial counts in injera samples prepared from carrot pulp-supplemented dough after the co-fermentation of tef and sorghum flours were observed to be higher. The injera product made using blending ratio of 60% tef: 30%sorghum: 10% carrot co-fermented was found to be the optimum result due to its very good nutritional improvement (i.e., reduction of some anti-nutritional factors, microbial contents, pH and increased contents of some minerals, crude protein, crude fat, TTA and improved most of the sensory quality of the supplemented injera product). According to this study, sorghum and carrot supplementation on tef could improve the nutritional value of injera while also providing an instant remedy for the growing price of tef. A variety of factors can predispose newborns to have a low Apgar score after delivery. Identification of the determinants of low Apgar scores is an important first step to take to apply the necessary precautions. This study aimed to identify the determinants of low fifth-minute Apgar score after a Cesarean section. An institutional-based case–control study was conducted among mothers who deliver their newborns by Cesarean section in Nigist Eleni Mohammed Memorial Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia, from July 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022. Data were collected from 70 cases and 140 controls using a semi-structured checklist. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select both charts of mothers with cases and controls. Charts of mothers with newborns Apgar score less than 7 were considered as cases; whereas a similar group of charts of mothers with newborns with fifth-minute Apgar score greater than or equal to 7 were categorized as control. Descriptive statistics and bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to describe the mothers and newborns and identify determinants of the fifth-minute low Apgar score, respectively. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with their respective 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to declare the determinant factors, and the statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. In total, 140 controls and 70 cases of mothers charts were enrolled in this study. The Mean ± SD age of mothers of cases and controls were 26.9 ± 4.9 and 27.06 ± 4.1 years, respectively. General anaesthesia (AOR = 4.2; 95% CI: 1.9 ‒ 9.3), rural residence (AOR = 3.7, 95% CI, 1.7‒8.1), low birth weight (AOR = 3.2, 95% CI, 1.3‒7.8), and emergency Cesarean section (AOR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.2 ‒ 5.8) were identified determinant factors of low fifth minute Apgar score. A fifth-minute low Apgar score was significantly associated with newborns delivered through emergency Cesarean section, low birth weight, rural residence, and delivered from mothers who had undergone Cesarean section under general anaesthesia. Economic development relies on access to electrical energy, which is crucial for society's growth. However, power shortages are challenging due to non-renewable energy depletion, unregulated use, and a lack of new energy sources. Ethiopia's Debre Markos distribution network experiences over 800 h of power outages annually, causing financial losses and resource waste on diesel generators (DGs) for backup use. To tackle these concerns, the present study suggests a hybrid power generation system, which combines solar and biogas resources, and integrates Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) and Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) technologies into the system. The study also thoroughly analyzes the current and anticipated demand connected to the distribution network using a backward/forward sweep load flow analysis method. The results indicate that the total power loss has reached its absolute maximum, and the voltage profiles of the networks have dropped below the minimal numerical values recommended by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards (i.e., 0.95–1.025 p.u.). After reviewing the current distribution network's operation, additional steps were taken to improve its effectiveness, using metaheuristic optimization techniques to account for various objective functions and constraints. In the results section, it is demonstrated that the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) outperforms other metaheuristic optimization techniques across three important objective functions: financial, reliability, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This comparison is based on the capability of the natural selection whale optimization algorithm (NSWOA) to achieve the best possible values for four significant metrics: Cost of Energy (COE), Net Present Cost (NPC), Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP), and GHG Emissions. The NSWOA achieved optimal values for these metrics, namely 0.0812 €/kWh, 3.0017 × 106 €, 0.00875, and 7.3679 × 106 kg reduced, respectively. This is attributable to their thorough economic, reliability, and environmental evaluation. Finally, the forward/backward sweep load flow analysis employed during the proposed system's integration significantly reduced the impact of new energy resources on the distribution network. This was evident in the reduction of total power losses from 470.78 to 18.54 kW and voltage deviation from 6.95 to 0.35 p.u., as well as the voltage profile of the distribution system being swung between 1 and 1.0234 p.u., which now comply with the standards set by the IEEE. Besides, a comparison of the cost and GHG emission efficiency of the proposed hybrid system with existing (grid + DGs) and alternative (only DGs) scenarios was done. This study aimed to identify the status, determining factors, and challenges in adopting climate smart livestock production practices by farmers. Three-staged sampling techniques were used to select the research sites and 233 sample farmer household respondents. Data were collected mainly using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Key informant interviews and focus group discussions were also conducted to complement the household survey data. Descriptive statistics and an ordered logistic regression model were applied to analyze the quantitative data. The result revealed that the most adopted practices were composting (85.41%) and manure management (70.39%) while the least adopted technologies were biogas generation (3.86%) and rotation grazing (22.32%). The adoption status of the sampled farmers was also categorized into low (19.74%), medium (67.81%), and high adopter (12.45%). The high cost of improved breed, use of manure for fuel, free grazing, lack of information and awareness were the major constraints to adopting the climate smart livestock production technologies. The result also revealed that education, grazing land, total livestock holding, and extension agent contact contributed significantly and positively to the adoption of smart livestock production technology, while the distance from the water source had an insignificant and negative effect on the adoption status of climate smart livestock production practices. Reproductive tract infections (RTIs) are a persistent public health threat worldwide, particularly among women in low-income countries of Africa, including Ethiopia, where drug resistance is also a growing problem. It is crucial to address this problem to ensure women's health and well-being. A cross-sectional study was carried out among a cohort of 398 women of reproductive age who sought medical attention at the Gynecology Department of the Arba Minch General Hospital, southern Ethiopia, from January to June 2020. They were chosen through systematic random sampling, and a pre-tested structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. The collection of vaginal and/or cervical swabs were done to diagnose bacterial vaginosis (BV) and aerobic vaginitis (AV) using Nugent and AV score analyses, respectively. The swabs were subjected to standard microbiological culture techniques to detect the isolates causing AV and vaginal candidiasis (VC). The susceptibility profiles of the causative agents of AV were checked by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion technique. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were also done. Aerobic vaginitis was the predominantly diagnosed RTI (n = 122, 30.7%), followed by BV (n = 117, 29.4%) and VC (n = 111, 27.9%). The prominent bacteria of AV were Escherichia coli (n = 36, 34.2%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 30, 28.5%). The overall rate of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria was 65.71% (n = 69). History of abortion (p = 0.01; AOR = 4.0, 95% CI = 2.1, 7.7) and the habit of using vaginal pH-altering contraceptives (p = 0.01; AOR = 4.7, 95% CI = 2.5, 8.8) have the greatest odds of RTI. The high prevalence of RTIs in our study warrants an urgent intervention to minimize the associated morbidities and complications. In developing countries, one-quarter of young women have suffered from anemia. However, the available studies in Ethiopia have been usually used the traditional stastical methods. Therefore, this study aimed to employ multiple machine learning algorithms to identify the most effective model for the prediction of anemia among youth girls in Ethiopia. A total of 5642 weighted samples of young girls from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey dataset were utilized. The data underwent preprocessing, with 80% of the observations used for training the model and 20% for testing. Eight machine learning algorithms were employed to build and compare models. The model performance was assessed using evaluation metrics in Python software. Various data balancing techniques were applied, and the Boruta algorithm was used to select the most relevant features. Besides, association rule mining was conducted using the Apriori algorithm in R software. The random forest classifier with an AUC value of 82% outperformed in predicting anemia among all the tested classifiers. Region, poor wealth index, no formal education, unimproved toilet facility, rural residence, not used contraceptive method, religion, age, no media exposure, occupation, and having more than 5 family size were the top attributes to predict anemia. Association rule mining was identified the top seven best rules that most frequently associated with anemia. The random forest classifier is the best for predicting anemia. Therefore, making it potentially valuable as decision-support tools for the relevant stakeholders and giving emphasis for the identified predictors could be an important intervention to halt anemia among youth girls. Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious, endemic, and acute viral cattle ailment that causes major economic damage in Ethiopia. Although several serotypes of the FMD virus have been detected in Ethiopia, there is no documented information about the disease's current serostatus and serotypes circulating in the Wolaita zone. Thus, from March to December 2022, a cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate FMDV seroprevalence, molecular detection, and serotype identification in three Wolaita Zone sites. A multistage sample procedure was used to choose three peasant associations from each study region, namely Wolaita Sodo, Offa district, and Boloso sore district. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to pick 384 cattle from the population for the seroprevalence research, and 10 epithelial tissue samples were purposefully taken from outbreak individuals for molecular detection of FMDV. The sera were examined using 3ABC FMD NSP Competition ELISA to find antibodies against FMDV non-structural proteins, whereas epithelial tissue samples were analyzed for molecular detection using real-time RT-PCR, and sandwich ELISA was used to determine the circulating serotypes. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to evaluate the associated risk variables. The total seroprevalence of FMD in cattle was 46.88% (95% CI 41.86–51.88), with Wolaita Sodo Town having the highest seroprevalence (63.28%). As a consequence, multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that animal age, herd size, and interaction with wildlife were all substantially related to FMD seroprevalence (p < 0.05). During molecular detection, only SAT-2 serotypes were found in 10 tissue samples. Thus, investigating FMD outbreaks and identifying serotypes and risk factors for seropositivity are critical steps in developing effective control and prevention strategies based on the kind of circulating serotype. In this regard Amharic localization in open-source database can handle the difficulties in managing data for governmental and non-governmental organizations. Amharic Extension Module was introduced to governmental organizations for the data management capabilities. But, there is no research that can explore the system's quality, the users' satisfaction and intension of continuance of Amharic Extension Module from the perspective of both computer literates and illiterates. Therefore, this research work attempt or try to empirically examine and analyze the system quality, the users' satisfaction and intension of continuance of Amharic Extension Module from the perspective of all users in POESSA The major purpose/aim of this study/research is to brand or make up the research break/gap in the area of localization specific to the Amharic locals, and to show the implication of the practical and theoretical way based on the results of the research. For this purpose, questionnaires were used for the collection of the research data. A total of 395 copies of the questionnaires were distributed and 385 of them are collected without any problem from the organization indicated herewith. The statistical analysis tools such as SPSS and AMOS, and methods such as Structural equation model were used for the analysis of the research data. The results of the research recommended and suggested that system quality can significantly influence confirmation. Meanwhile, confirmation can directly and significantly influence perceived usefulness, performance expectations, and satisfaction. Additionally, performance expectation, perceived usefulness and confirmation can significantly impact/influence satisfaction. The satisfaction directly and most importantly and significantly influences the continuance intension. Medicinal plants can be potential sources of therapeutic agents. Traditional healers use a medicinal plant from Ethiopia, Bersama abyssinica Fresen, to treat various diseases. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical components and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of B. abyssinica seed extracts (BASE). Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) analysis was used to determine the phytochemical compositions of BASE. The antioxidant activities were assessed by using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARS) assay, ferric chloride reducing assay and hydroxyl scavenging capacity assay. Antimicrobial activity was investigated using the agar well diffusion method. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of saponins, glycosides, tannins, steroids, phenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, and alkaloids. GC–MS analysis revealed the presence of 30 volatile compounds; α-pinene (23.85%), eucalyptol (20.74%), β-pinene (5.75%), d-limonene (4.05%), and o-cymene (5.02%). DPPH-induced free radical scavenging (IC50 = 8.78), TBARS (IC50 = 0.55 µg/mL), and hydroxyl radicals' scavenging capacities assays (IC50 = 329.23) demonstrated high antioxidant effects of BASE. Reducing power was determined based on Fe3+–Fe2+ transformation in the presence of extract. BASE was found to show promising antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa (zone of inhibition 15.7 ± 2.5 mm, 16.0 ± 0.0 mm, and 16.7 ± 1.5 mm, respectively), but excellent antifungal activities against C. albican and M. furfur (zone of inhibition 22.0 ± 2.0 mm and 22.0 ± 4.0 mm, respectively). The seeds of B. abyssinica grown in Ethiopia possess high antioxidant potential, promising antibacterial and superior antifungal activity. Poor management of fecal sludge (FSM) presents significant risks to public health and the environment. This study employed qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, along with the Shit Flow Diagram (SFD) data analyzing tool to investigate FSM patterns in Kombolcha town, Ethiopia. The findings indicate that 75.7% of housing unites in the town are shared toilets, with multiple households sharing a single facility. The primary toilet technologies used include cistern flush toilets (2.1%), pour/manual flush toilets (19.8%), ventilated improved pit latrines (11.1%), pit latrines with slabs (56.4%), and pit latrines without slabs (10.6%). However, 98.5% of these toilet types had either unlined or only partially lined containments. Furthermore, only 37% of households practice safe pit or sludge tank emptying. As a result, only 17% of fecal sludge goes through the sanitation value chain and is effectively treated, while 39% remains onsite and unemptied, and the remaining 44% is disposed of in a manner that poses risks to the environment and public health. The study highlights the significant public health and environmental risks associated with the high reliance on shared toilets, the prevalence of inadequately lined toilet types, and the low adoption of proper fecal sludge management practices. Addressing these challenges requires the implementation of sanitation bylaws and building code regulations that prioritize hygienic standards and promote improved toilet technologies. Breast cancer has the highest incidence rate among women in Ethiopia compared to other types of cancer. Unfortunately, many cases are detected at a stage where a cure is delayed or not possible. To address this issue, mammography-based screening is widely accepted as an effective technique for early detection. However, the interpretation of mammography images requires experienced radiologists in breast imaging, a resource that is limited in Ethiopia. In this research, we have developed a model to assist radiologists in mass screening for breast abnormalities and prioritizing patients. Our approach combines an ensemble of EfficientNet-based classifiers with YOLOv5, a suspicious mass detection method, to identify abnormalities. The inclusion of YOLOv5 detection is crucial in providing explanations for classifier predictions and improving sensitivity, particularly when the classifier fails to detect abnormalities. To further enhance the screening process, we have also incorporated an abnormality detection model. The classifier model achieves an F1-score of 0.87 and a sensitivity of 0.82. With the addition of suspicious mass detection, sensitivity increases to 0.89, albeit at the expense of a slightly lower F1-score of 0.79. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a paucity of published evidence about musculoskeletal disorders among hospital cleaners in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and its associated factors among hospital cleaners in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A total of 437 hospital cleaners participated in the study. A standardized questionnaire adapted from the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire was used for data collection. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to determine factors associated with musculoskeletal disorders. The prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among hospital cleaners was 57.2% with 95% CI (52.6–62.0). Occupational safety training [AOR: 2.34, 95% CI (1.47–3.73)], repetitive tasks [AOR: 3.09, 95% CI (1.61–5.94)], heavy lifting [AOR: 5.21, 95% CI (3.20–8.48)], work-related stress [AOR: 2.42, 95% CI (1.48–3.97) and work-related dissatisfaction [AOR: 1.97, 95% CI (1.23–3.13)] were identified as associated factors for the development of musculoskeletal disorders. In conclusion the study revealed a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorder. Notably, work related and organizational factors emerged as key contributing factors to the development of disorders. The identified associations underscore the importance of targeted interventions promoting organizational change involving managers to mitigate the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and enhance overall occupational health and well-being. Improved crop genotypes are constantly introduced. However, information on their nutritional quality is generally limited. The present study reports the proximate composition and the concentration and relative bioavailability of minerals of improved finger millets of different genotypes. Grains of finger millet genotypes (n = 15) grown in research station during 2019 and 2020 in Ethiopia, and replicated three times in a randomized complete block design, were analysed for proximate composition, mineral concentration (iron, zinc, calcium, selenium), and antinutritional factors (phytate, tannin and oxalate). Moreover, the antinutritional factors to mineral molar ratio method was used to estimate mineral bioavailability. The result shows a significant genotypic variation in protein, fat and fibre level, ranging from 10% to 14.6%, 1.0 to 3.8%, and 1.4 to 4.6%, respectively. Similarly, different finger millets genotypes had significantly different mineral concentrations ranging from 3762 ± 332 to 5893 ± 353 mg kg−1 for Ca, 19.9 ± 1.6 to 26.2 ± 2.7 mg kg−1 for Zn, 36.3 ± 4.6 to 52.9 ± 9.1 mg kg−1 for Fe and 36.6 ± 11 to 60.9 ± 22 µg kg−1 for Se. Phytate (308–360 µg g−1), tannin (0.15–0.51 mg g−1) and oxalate (1.26–4.41 mg g−1) concentrations were also influenced by genotype. Antinutritional factors to minerals molar ratio were also significantly different by genotypes but were below the threshold for low mineral bioavailability. Genotype significantly influenced mineral and antinutritional concentrations of finger millet grains. In addition, all finger millet genotypes possess good mineral bioavailability. Especially, the high Ca concentration in finger millet, compared to in other cereals, could play a vital role to combating Ca deficiency. Health professionals need a strong prediction system to reach appropriate disease diagnosis, particularly for under-five child with health problems like anemia. Diagnosis and treatment delay can potentially lead to devastating disease complications resulting in childhood mortality. However, the application of machine learning techniques using a large data set provides scientifically sounded information to solve such palpable critical health and health-related problems. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the predictors of anemia among under-5 year's age children in Ethiopia using a machine learning approach. A cross-sectional study design was done using the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2016 data set. A two-stage stratified cluster sampling technique was employed to select the samples. The data analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for Social Sciences/SPSS version 25 and R-software. Data were derived from Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. Boruta algorism was applied to select the features and determine the predictors of anemia among under-5 years-old children in Ethiopia. The machine learning algorism showed that number of children, distance to health facilities, health insurance coverage, youngest child's stool disposal, residence, mothers' wealth index, type of cooking fuel, number of family members, mothers' educational status and receiving rotavirus vaccine were the top ten important predictors for anemia among under-five children. Machine-learning algorithm was applied to determine the predictors of anemia among under- 5 year's age children in Ethiopia. We have identified the determinant factors by conducting a feature importance analysis with the Boruta algorithm. The most significant predictors were number of children, distance to health facility, health insurance coverage, youngest child's stool disposal, residence, mothers' wealth index, and type of cooking fuel. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a condition which can be prevented and treated and is characterized by difficulty of breathing that is not entirely curable. The overall objective of this study was to model the variation of longitudinal measurement over time for outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases at the University of Gondar referral hospital. From February 1, 2019, to February 1, 2022, a retrospective study of outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was conducted in a hospital. The data was extracted from all patients' data records from the patient's chart. The information includes the fundamental demographic and clinical details of each outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Mixed linear model were used to investigate the determinant factor of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. From a total of 266 outpatients, Averages of the ratio of forced expiratory volume to forced vital capacity among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients were 0.65, with a standard deviation of 0.043. Comorbidities (average = 2.18, 95% CI 0.43:3.9, P = 0.0133), HIV(average = 4.83, 95% CI 1.94:7.72, P = 0.0012), education (average = 2.98; 95% CI 0.75:4.8, P = 0.008), and weight (average = 0.178, 95% CI 0.045:0.311, P = 0.009) are risk factors for change in forced vital capacity. This study clearly shows that there is a high COPD prevalence in Ethiopia. Selection based on yield alone may not be effective for yield improvement in plant breeding programs. Thus, in order to progress the genetic gains during selection, yield should be considered along with potential yield contributing traits. The objective of this study was to improve the genotype of amaranth and increase the effectiveness of selection in the program by identifying the correlation and path coefficients between yield and its relevant attributes. On 120 genotypes of amaranth planted during two growing seasons in 2020 and 2021, the study was carried out using an alpha lattice design with two replications. The results revealed significant positive phenotypic and genotypic associations on leaf yield, with leaf area, leaf breadth, branch number, leaf number, plant height at flowering, and grain yield all having positive direct effects. Similar strong positive phenotypic and genotypic relationships were found for grain yield and grain sink filling rates. Using path coefficient analysis, the direct and indirect effects of yield-related traits on yield were also determined. In addition to having a strong direct impact on grain output, the grain sink filling rates showed both phenotypic and genotypic evidence of substantial positive relationships with grain yield. It was further suggested that leaf yield in amaranth genotypes may increase through the indirect selection of plant height at maturity, leaf length, and terminal inflorescence lateral length, which showed such significant indirect influences, mostly through leaf area, days to maturity, and days to emergence, which displayed such strong indirect effects, primarily through plant height at flowering. This study consequently shows the need for traits with significant positive indirect impacts via leaf area to be considered indirect selection criteria for improving leaf yield in amaranth genotypes. The grain sink filling rate also significantly improved grain yield indirectly at both the phenotypic and genotypic levels, mainly via days to flowering and leaf yield. Although larval diet quality may affect adult mosquito fitness, its impact on parasite development is scarce. Plant pollen from Zea mays, Typha latifolia, and Prosopis juliflora was ultraviolet-sterilized and examined for effects on larval development, pupation rate, adult mosquito longevity, survival and infectivity. The control larvae were fed Tetramin fish food as a comparator food. Four treatment and two control groups were used for each pollen diet, and each experimental tray had 25 larvae. Female An. arabiensis were starved overnight and exposed to infectious blood using a membrane-feeding system. The Kaplan–Meier curves and log-rank test were used for analysis. The Z. mays pollen diet increased malaria mosquito survival and pupation rate (91.3%) and adult emergence (85%). Zea mays and Tetramin fish food had comparable adulthood development times. Adults who emerged from larvae fed Z. mays pollen had the longest average wing length (3.72 mm) and were more permissive to P. vivax (45%) and P. falciparum (27.5%). They also survived longer after feeding on infectious blood and had the highest number of P. vivax oocysts. Zea mays pollen improved larval development, adult mosquito longevity, survival and infectivity to Plasmodium. Cooking and heating using solid fuels, such as dung, wood, agricultural residues, grass, straw, charcoal, and coal, is a main source of household air pollution. This indoor combustion encompasses a diversity of health detrimental pollutants, especially for people from low-income countries like Ethiopia since solid fuels are accessible easily at a lesser cost. Limited studies done showing factors affecting in choosing fuel type and no study, which revealed spatial heterogeneity of solid fuel used based on such nationally representative data. Therefore, this study, aimed at investigating spatial variation and determinants of solid fuel use in Ethiopia. This study was done using the data from the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2016, a national representative sample (16,650) households were included. Spatial and Multi-level logistic regression analysis was done by considering the DHS data hierarchal nature. Variables in the final model with a p-value < 0.05 were reported as significant predictors of using solid fuel. All analyses were done using ArcGIS V.10.7.1 and STATA V.14 software. The finding of this study revealed that 90.8% (95% CI (87.9%, 91.2%)) of households depend on solid fuel for cooking. Based on the final model ;Male household head (AOR 1.38, 95% CI (1.12–1.71)), age of household head (AOR 1.61, 95% CI (1.20, 2.17)), and 1.49 (OR 1.49, 95% CI (1.12, 1.99)) respectively for the age classes of < 30, and 30–40, education attainment no education (OR 3.14, 95% CI (1.13, 8.71)) and primary education (AOR 2.16, 95% CI (2.78, 5.96), wealth index Poorest (AOR 11.05, 95% CI (5.68, 15.78)), Poorer (OR 5.19, 95% CI (5.43, 13.19)), Middle (OR 3.08, 95% CI (2.44, 8.73)), and Richer (OR 1.30, 95IC (1.07, 13.49)) compared to richest, and not accessibility of electricity (AOR 31.21, 95% CI (35.41, 42.67)), were individual-level factors significantly associated with using solid fuel. Changes in wet and dry patterns have an impact on rain-fed agriculture, crop productivity, and food security in Eastern Africa. The purpose of this research is to look into the changes in wet days and dry periods within the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) region. Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Station Data (CHIRPS) and Multi Models Ensembles (MME) of 10 historical simulations and projections from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) models were employed as the data source. Several statistical approaches, as well as wet and dry spell thresholds, were used to calculate patterns of change in wet and dry spells on a decadal (10-year), 20, 30, and 41-year time scale. The results show the region exhibits decrease a decrease in the number of wet days and protracted dry spells in the 1980s, followed by an extraordinary (exceptional) increase in wet days in the subsequent decades (2011–2020) during March–May (MAM), June–September (JJAS), and October-December (OND). In Kenya, Somalia, southeastern Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti, the probability of surpassing 7, 14, 21, 28 days (1, 2, 3, 4 spells) was less than 5%. Furthermore, floods in 1997, 2018, 2019, and 2020, as well as droughts in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 2021, were triggered by an increase or decrease in the number of wet days and dry spells over most of the region. The number of wet days is projected to decrease by 10–20% during the MAM season across Sudan, South Sudan, and central and northern Ethiopia, JJAS is projected to increase by 30–50% across central and northern Sudan. However, during the OND season, increases are projected over Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5) scenarios. These findings contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the IGAD region, as well as decision-making, food security, and the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies. The primary driver of economic growth is energy, predominantly derived from fossil fuels, the demand for which has experienced a significant increase since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. The emissions of hazardous gases resulting from the utilization of these fuels have been well acknowledged, therefore exerting a notable impact on the environment. In the context of Ethiopia, it is observed that despite the presence of ample renewable resources, the accessibility to power continues to be constrained. In order to effectively tackle this issue, it is imperative to redirect attention towards the utilization of renewable sources, such as wind energy, as a means of enhancing the existing power grid infrastructure. The present study used geospatial tools to evaluate the appropriateness of the Wolayita region for the establishment of a wind power facility. The process of site selection is guided by multiple factors, and a multi-criteria approach is facilitated through the utilization of Geographic Information System (GIS). The evaluation of seven characteristics was conducted utilizing the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology, which involved pairwise comparisons and weighted scoring. The process of suitability mapping involves the classification of locations into four distinct categories, which range from the most suitable to the least suitable. The findings demonstrate that the area of 0.628% (28.00 km2) is deemed the most suitable, while 54.61% (2433.96 km2) is considered somewhat acceptable. Additionally, 0.85% (37.85 km2) is identified as the least suitable, leaving a remaining 43.91% (1060.00 km2) that is deemed unsuitable. The central, northwestern, and southern regions are identified as optimal geographic areas. The results of this study facilitate the process of investing in renewable energy, thereby assisting Ethiopian authorities and organizations in promoting sustainable development. Although there are many results that can be used to treat and prevent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), these diseases continue to be public health concerns and cause socioeconomic consequences. Following compromised immunity, COVID-19 is considered to be a challenge for people with HIV. People with advanced HIV are considered a vulnerable population at high risk in several case studies that discuss COVID-19 and HIV co-infection. As there is no cure for HIV and there is a chance of contracting COVID-19 again, co-infection continues to pose a problem. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of intervention strategies and identify the role of different parameters in risking people living with HIV to death when they get infected with COVID-19. This is achieved through the development and rigorous analysis of a mathematical model that considers a population at risk of death due to COVID-19 and HIV. The model formulation provides a detailed explanation of the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 and HIV co-infection. The solution's invariant region, positivity, and boundedness were established. The reproduction numbers of the sub-models and the co-infection model were determined. The existence and stability of equilibria, including backward bifurcation for the COVID-19 sub-model, were examined. The epidemiological significance of backward bifurcation is that the condition R 0 less than 1 for eliminating COVID-19, though necessary, is no longer sufficient. Parametric estimation and curve fitting were performed based on data from Ethiopia. Numerical simulations were employed to support and clarify the analytical findings and to show some parameter effects on COVID-19 and HIV co-infection. Accordingly, the simulations indicated that parameters γ c , γ h , ϵ , and κ , related to HIV patients' exposure to other diseases and the increase in infectiousness, have a positive role in increasing the number of co-infections. On the other hand, an increase in COVID-19 vaccination (ξ ) shows the suppression of co-infection cases. In addition, treating co-infected individuals for COVID-19, increasing treatment rates α and φ , reduces the death risk of HIV-infected individuals due to the co-infection burden. It was implied that improving vaccine delivery programs and other medical interventions have important contributions to lowering the risk of COVID-19 infection-related fatalities in HIV patients. The long stratigraphic sequence of the Shungura Formation in the Lower Omo Valley documents 3 million years (Ma) of hominin evolution, which, when combined with detailed paleo-depositional environmental data, opens new perspectives for understanding the complex interactions between hominin landscape use and the development of stone tool-mediated activities. Stone tool assemblages produced by Paranthropus aethiopicus and/or a species of early Homo from ~ 2.3 Ma, reflect their ability to deal with the raw material scarce environment of the Lower Omo Valley. It remains to be seen whether this activity can be related to a single, brief occupation event or the expression of an emergent new adaptation. Here we report on the newly investigated site complex of OMO 79, which produced the first evidence for multiple phases of hominin tool-making and use in the Shungura Formation. The development of this long-lasting techno-economic behavior marks a cognitive tipping point around 2.3 Ma in the Lower Omo Valley, evidenced by the adaptability of the early hominins to resource-constrained environments. In this study, we assessed responses of adaptation options to possible climate change scenarios on maize growth and yield by using projections of 20 coupled ensemble climate models under two representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5 by means of a DSSAT model. Growth and yield simulations were made across present and future climate conditions using the hybrid maize variety (Shone). Subsequently, simulated yields were compared with farmer' average and on-farm trial yields. Results showed that on-farm trial yield (5.1–7.3 t ha−1) lay in between farmers' average yield (2.9–5 t ha−1) and water-limited potential yield (6.3–10.6 t ha−1). Maize yields achieved in farmers' fields are projected to decline towards mid-century and further towards the end of the century regardless of the adaptation options compared with baseline in low potential clusters. Results of a combination of adaptation options including February planting, use of 64 kg ha−1 N and conservation tillage provided yield advantage of 5.8% over the 30 cm till under medium GHGs emission scenario during mid-century period at Shamana. Mulching with 5 t ha−1 was projected to produce a 4–5% yield advantage in the Hawassa cluster during the mid-century period regardless of changes in tillage or planting window. Under a high GHGs emission scenario, over 13.4% yield advantage was projected in the Bilate cluster due to conservation tillage and June planting during the mid-century period. In the Dilla cluster, the use of 10 t ha−1 mulch, conservation tillage and early planting (February) would result in a 1.8% yield advantage compared with the control either in medium or high GHGs emission scenarios. Thus, the most promising and least risky practices among simulated strategies were the use of nitrogen and mulching in combination with tillage or planting date adjustment. However, adaptation options remained least promising and highly risky if not integrated with mulching or nitrogen use. Hence, the negative impacts of future climate change and subsequent yield gaps would be reduced by optimizing the application of nitrogen, mulch and their interaction with planting date and tillage in high and low potential areas of maize production. The postpartum period is a crucial starting point for the delivery of family planning services. To date, there are numerous primary studies in Ethiopia on postpartum contraceptive use and related factors. However, the results of key variables are inconsistent, making it difficult to use the results to advance the service dimensions of postpartum contraceptive use in the country. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was required to summarize this inconsistency and compile the best available evidence on the impact of maternal educational status, antenatal care and menstrual resumption on postpartum contraceptive use in Ethiopia. PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, and the repositories of online research institutes were searched. Data were extracted with Microsoft Excel and analyzed with the statistical software STATA (version 14). Data on the study area, design, population, sample size, and observed frequency were extracted using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. To obtain the pooled effect size, a meta-analysis was performed using a weighted inverse variance random effects model. Cochran's Q X2 test, and I2 statistics were used to test for heterogeneity, estimate the total quantity, and measure the variability attributed to heterogeneity. A mixed-effects meta-regression analysis was performed to identify possible sources of heterogeneity. To examine publication bias, the Eggers regression test and the Beggs correlation test were used at a p-value threshold of 0.001. Of the 654 articles reviewed, 18 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, the final analysis includes 11,263 study participants. In Ethiopia, postpartum contraceptive use correlated significantly with maternal educational status (OR = 3.121:95% CI 2.127–4.115), antenatal care follow-up (OR = 3.286; 95% CI 2.353–4.220), and return of the mother's menses (OR = 3.492; 95% CI 1.843–6.615). A uniform meta-regression was performed based on publication year (p = 0.821), sample size (p = 0.989), and city of residence (p = 0.104), which revealed that none of these factors are significant. The use of postpartum contraceptives was found to be better among mothers who are educated, attended antenatal appointments, and resumed their menstrual cycle. Based on our research, we strongly recommended that antenatal care use and maternal educational accessibility need to improve. Energy is the foundation of the global economy and is essential to human survival. Nevertheless, more than 60% of it comes from fossil fuels. That is not a replenished and scarce source. However, a sizable amount of organic waste is generated every minute throughout the world and can be used as a raw material to produce renewable energy. Among them, Coffee processing generates a huge amount of solid and liquid waste that is organic and can serve as raw material for biofuel production. Since coffee beans and powder are Ethiopia's main exports, coffee pulp is easily accessible. Therefore, the main goal of this project is to convert this waste, which largely consists of organic materials, into a valuable product called Methane. The purity and yield of methane productivity are significantly influenced by the type of additives we use. This work systematically investigates the effect of chemical and biological additives on the productivity and purity of the Biogas from the coffee pulp silage in batch systems under mesophilic temperature (38 °C) for different ensiling periods and additive proportions. The chemical additives recorded the maximum biogas production (2980 ml) at an ensiling period of 40 days with high purity of about 70% biogas. The minimum Biogas was recorded at the ensiling period of 10 days by the control (T1) treatments, which was 634 ml. Mastitis is the most common disease of dairy cattle worldwide, causing economic losses due to reduced yield and poor quality of milk. It is of particular concern in Ethiopia, where effective prevention and control practices are lacking. The objective of the present prospective longitudinal study was to estimate the incidence rate of clinical mastitis (CM), identify the risk factors, isolate the bacterial agents, and determine the risk of recurrence. For this purpose, a total of 217 lactating cows were followed up every two weeks from calving to drying off or the end of the study period. Of these, 79 (36.41%) developed CM, of which 23% had recurrent infections in the same or a different quarter. The overall incidence rate of CM was 83.72 (95% CI: 63.2–98.2) cases per 100 cow-years at risk. In the multivariable Cox regression model, the risk of CM was found to be significantly higher in multiparous cows (HR = 1.96; p = 0.03), in cows with a history of mastitis (HR = 2.04; p = 0.030), in cows that had severely keratinized teat end condition (HR = 7.72; p < 0.001) and in cows kept in poorly cleaned barns (HR = 1.89; p = 0.007). The pathogenic bacteria isolated from mastitis-positive cows were Staphylococcus aureus (28.1%), E. coli (21.1%), Bacillus spp. (14%), Streptococcus spp. (14%), coagulase-negative staphylococci (12.3%), non aureus staphylococci (5.3%), Enterobacter spp. (3.5%), Klebsiella spp. (1.8%), Corynebacterium spp. (1.8%), and Proteus spp. (1.8%). The high incidence rate of CM in the present study shows that the disease spreads rapidly and can be responsible for a significant economic loss to milk producers in the study area. Therefore, raising awareness among dairy farmers, early detection and treatment of cases, post-milking teat disinfection, improvement of the hygienic status of cows and barns, use of dry cow therapy, and culling of chronic cases are recommended as viable measures to prevent and control clinical mastitis in the study area. Respiratory diseases caused by Mannheimia haemolytica (M. haemolytica) and Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) have been known to result in a considerable loss due to mortality and reduced production. This study aimed at isolation and identification of M. haemolytica and P. multocida associated with pneumonic pasteurellosis in sheep and goats using bacteriological and molecular techniques. Identification of serotypes of M. haemolytica and P. multocida was done using indirect haemagglutination test. The in vitro antimicrobial sensitivity profiles of the M. haemolytica were tested using standard disk diffusion method. A total of 52 and 78 nasal swabs were collected from pneumonic cases for bacterial isolation and identification in Borana and Arsi zone, respectively. Four hundred sera samples were collected for identification of serotypes. The results showed that 17 of 52 (32.69%; 95% CI 20.33, 47.11) nasal swabs collected from pneumonic animals in Borana yielded positive results for Pasteurella/Mannheimia species, 13 (25.00%; 95% CI 14.03, 38.95) of which were M. haemolytica. None of the samples yielded P. multocida. Twenty-three of 78 (29.49%; 95% CI 19.69, 40.89) nasal swabs collected at Arsi from pneumonic animals yielded positive results for M. haemolytica (17) and P. multocida (6). Secondary biochemical characterization revealed that 14 of the 17 isolates conform to M. haemolytica whereas none of the 6 isolates suspected to be P. mutocida were confirmed. Eleven (84.62%) isolates from Borana and 4 (28.57%) from Arsi were confirmed to be M. haemolytica using PCR targeting the Rpt2 genes. Assay for M. haemolytica serotype A1 revealed all belong to A1. None of the isolates with cultural and morphological features of P. multocida gave positive results by molecular assay. Serological assay identified three serotypes of M. haemolytica namely A1, A2 and A7 almost in all of the samples whereas P. multocida serotype A was detected in 78.75% of the samples. The M. haemolytica isolates tested for susceptibility to antibiotics showed resistance against Bacitracin (83.33%) and Penicillin (50.00%) while they were found susceptible to Gentamycin (100%), Chloramphenicol (100%) and Sulfamethoxazole (100%) and Tetracycline (83.33%). In conclusion, the results of the present study revealed the association of M. haemolytica with pneumonic pasteurellosis in sheep and goats and can be of use in vaccine development in Ethiopia. Nevertheless, further investigations and continuous monitoring of antimicrobial resistance and appropriate selection and prudent use of antimicrobials in livestock sector are required. A Trial of labor after cesarean section is an attempt to deliver vaginally by a woman who had a previous cesarean delivery and when achieved by a vaginal delivery it is called successful vaginal birth after cesarean section. Vaginal birth after a caesarian section is a preferred method to decrease complications associated with repeated caesarian section delivery for both mother and fetus. It has a higher success rate when the right women are selected for a trial of labor. This study aimed to assess factors associated with successful vaginal birth after one lower uterine transverse cesarean section and to validate the Flamm and Geiger score at the public hospitals of Bahir Dar City, Northwest, Ethiopia, 2021. A health facility-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from March 1 to 15/2021. A medical record review of 408 women charts with a trial of labor after one lower uterine transverse cesarean section from January 1/2020 to December 31/2020 was done and 345 women charts with complete maternal and fetal information were included in the study with a response rate of 84.6%. The data were collected using a structured checklist, entered into Epi data 3.1, and analyzed using SPSS 25.0 version. Logistic regression analyses were done to estimate the crude and adjusted odds ratio with a confidence interval of 95% and a P-value of less than 0.05 considered statistically significant. This study identified that the trial of labor after cesarean section rate was 69.5%, and the success rate of vaginal birth after one lower uterine transverse cesarean section was 35.07%. Of the failed trial of labor, fetal distress (38.9%) and failed progress of labor (32.1%) were the main indications for an emergency cesarean section. The maternal age group of 21–30 years, prior vaginal birth after or before cesarean section, non-recurring indication (fetal distress and malpresentation), ruptured membrane, cervical dilatation ≥ 4 cm, cervical effacement ≥ 50%, and low station (≥ 0) at admission were associated with successful vaginal birth after one lower uterine transverse cesarean section. For the Flamm and Geiger score at a cut point of 5, the sensitivity and specificity were 73.6% and 86.6% respectively. In this study area, the trial of labor after cesarean section rate is encouraging, however, the success rate of vaginal birth after one lower uterine transverse caesarian section was lower. The maternal socio-demographic and obstetric-related factors were significantly associated with successful vaginal birth after one lower transverse caesarian section delivery. This study indicated that when the Flamm and Geiger score increases, the chance of successful vaginal birth after one lower uterine transverse caesarian section also increases. We suggest emphasizing counselling and encouraging the women, as their chance of successful vaginal delivery will be high in the subsequent pregnancy, especially if the indications of primary caesarian section delivery were non-recurring. Food taboo is any unacceptable food items in the society that arise mainly based on religious, cultural, historical and social principles. Developing countries faced the triple burden of malnutrition of under nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and overeating. Food taboos have great effect on pregnant women through prohibited essential food and/or drinks. There is a paucity of study conducted in food taboo practice among pregnant women in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of food taboo practice and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at Bahir Dar city, 2020. Institutional based cross-sectional study design was conducted among 421 pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics. Stratified sampling technique was used to approach the study participants, and interviewer administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify predictors. The prevalence of food taboo practices among pregnant women was 27.5% (95% CI 23.2–31.8%) at the Bahir Dar city. Most food items avoided during pregnancy were meat, honey, milk, fruit and cereals. Reasons for avoidance of these food items were plastered on the fetal head, and making fatty baby which is difficult for deliver. Maternal age 20–30 years (AOR = 8.39, 95% CI 3.49–20.14), more than 30 years [AOR = 10.56, 95% CI (2.00, 51.74)], more than 2 parity [AOR = 9.83 95% CI (2.79, 34.70)], no previous experience of the ANC visit [AOR = 2.68, 95% CI (1.26, 5.73)], and no information about nutrition [AOR = 4.55, 95% CI (1.77, 11.70)] were significantly associated with practice of food taboo. This study revealed that prevalence of food taboo is high during pregnancy. The implications of this study that needs strengthening nutrition counseling components of ANC follow-up and health professionals needs to design and implement strategic health communication intended to reorient misconceptions and myths for the pregnant women regarding the food taboo. Ethiopia has been challenged by the growing magnitude of diabetes in general and type-2 diabetes in particular. Knowledge extraction from stored dataset can be an important base for better decision on diabetes rapid diagnosis, suggestive on prediction for early intervention. Thus, this study was addressed these problem by application of supervised machine learning algorithms for classification and prediction of type 2 diabetes disease status and might provide context-specific information to program planners and policy makers so that, priority will be given to the more affected groups. To apply supervised machine learning algorithms; compare these algorithms and select the best algorithm based on their performance for classification and prediction of type-2 diabetic disease status (positive or negative) in public hospitals of Afar regional state, Northeastern Ethiopia. This study was conducted at Afar regional state from February to June of 2021. Decision tree; pruned J 48, Artificial neural network, K-nearest neighbor, Support vector machine, Binary logistic regression, Random forest, and Naïve Bayes supervised machine learning algorithms were applied using secondary data from the medical database record review. A total of 2239 sample Dataset diagnosed for diabetes from 2012 to April 22/2020 (1523 with type-2 diabetes and 716 without type-2 diabetes) was checked for its completeness prior to analysis. For all algorithms, WEKA3.7 tool was used for analysis purposes. Moreover, all algorithms were compared based on their correctly classification rate, kappa statistics, confusion matrix, area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity. From the seven major supervised machine learning algorithms, the best classification and prediction results were obtained from random forest [correctly classified rate (93.8%), kappa statistics (0.85), sensitivity (0.98), area under the curve (0.97) and confusion matrix (out of 454 actual positive prediction for 446)] which was followed by decision tree pruned J 48 [correctly classified rate (91.8%), kappa statistics (0.80), sensitivity (0.96), area under the curve (0.91) and confusion matrices (out of 454 actual positive prediction for 438)] and k-nearest neighbor [correctly classified rate (89.8%), kappa statistics (0.76), sensitivity (0.92), area under the curve (0.88) and confusion matrices (out of 454 actual positive prediction for 421)]. Random forest, Decision tree pruned J48 and k-nearest neighbor algorithms have better classification and prediction performance for classifying and predicting type-2 diabetes disease status. The shortage of diversified diets in lactating postpartum mothers is a severe problem in developing countries. The promotion of diverse diets is important to improving micronutrient nourishment and adequate energy intake for lactating mothers. To date, there is limited evidence regarding inadequate dietary diversity practices among lactating postpartum mothers in Gambella region. The study is aimed to determine inadequate dietary diversity practice and associated factors among lactating postpartum mothers in Gambella city, southwest Ethiopia. Mixed methods were employed on 407 randomly selected lactating postpartum mothers and 15 purposively selected key informants from February 28 to March 24, 2021. A pre-tested questionnaire and interview guide were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 21 software. Binary logistic regression models were used to determine the associated factors of dietary diversity. Qualitative data were analyzed manually through a thematic approach. The prevalence of inadequate dietary diversity practice was 60.2%. Having no education (AOR = 3.74, 95% CI: 1.18, 11.88), employed women(AOR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.75), meal frequency < 3 meals (AOR = 2.92, 95% CI: 1.04, 8.71), time taken to market > 30 min (AOR = 4.20, 95% CI: 2.01, 8.76), not received nutrition education (AOR = 2.0, 95% CI:1.09, 3.68), having home gardening (AOR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.57) and having big animals (AOR = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.05, 0.29) were significant factors of inadequate dietary diversity practice. Diet habits, food taboos, low social status of women in ownership of household assets, low family support, order of feeding, child preference for resource distribution in a polygamous family, and health care provider's advice were the main mentioned reasons for inadequate dietary diversity practices. The prevalence of inadequate dietary diversity practices were high compared to previous studies. Having no education, employed women, meal frequency < 3 meals, time taken to market > 30 min, not receiving nutrition education, having a home garden, and having big animals were significant factors of inadequate dietary diversity practice. Nutrition intervention focused on nutrition education to increase meal frequency should be provided for lactating postpartum mothers to improve inadequate dietary diversity practices. Pastoralists in the Borana zone of southern Ethiopia are grappling with climatic risks and impacts, and their livelihoods appear to be precarious. The long-term changes in precipitation, temperature and extreme events are under-researched aspects of climate risk in the study area. Climate observations, local people's experiences, and memories of weather and drought patterns were analysed in this work to better understand the climate risks in the study region and provide actionable knowledge to facilitate adaptations. In southern Ethiopia, the primary drivers of climate risks are rainfall variabilities, rising temperatures, and drought. The annual rainfall variability observed in the study area (20–35%) is greater than the overall estimate for Eastern Africa (15–25%), indicative of a heightened climate risk in this area. Furthermore, seasonal and intra-seasonal rainfall variabilities are being aggravated by rising temperatures, leading to increased frequency and magnitude of extreme events, particularly in the lowland area. These changes, specifically droughts of different intensities occurring every 2–3 years, erode the livelihood of the pastoralists. The lack of consensus among stakeholders as to the causes and aggravating factors of these climate changes impedes adaptation actions. The authors recommend the importance of initiating a participatory platform that will facilitate discussion on climate change to create a common understanding of the problem and relate it to public policy. The use of gridded precipitation and temperature data is recommended in future research to improve the availability of climate information for climate risk management. In addition, the use of mixed methods and local knowledge, as demonstrated in this study, is highly recommended to better understand climate risks, particularly when there is a limited availability and quality of long-time-series climate data. The worldwide inequitable access to vaccination claims for a re-assessment of policies that could minimize the COVID-19 burden in low-income countries. Nine months after the launch of the national vaccination program in March 2021, only 3.4% of the Ethiopian population received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine. We used a SARS-CoV-2 transmission model to estimate the level of immunity accrued before the launch of vaccination in the Southwest Shewa Zone (SWSZ) and to evaluate the impact of alternative age priority vaccination targets in a context of limited vaccine supply. The model was informed with available epidemiological evidence and detailed contact data collected across different geographical settings (urban, rural, or remote). We found that, during the first year of the pandemic, the mean proportion of critical cases occurred in SWSZ attributable to infectors under 30 years of age would range between 24.9 and 48.0%, depending on the geographical setting. During the Delta wave, the contribution of this age group in causing critical cases was estimated to increase on average to 66.7–70.6%. Our findings suggest that, when considering the vaccine product available at the time (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19; 65% efficacy against infection after 2 doses), prioritizing the elderly for vaccination remained the best strategy to minimize the disease burden caused by Delta, irrespectively of the number of available doses. Vaccination of all individuals aged ≥ 50 years would have averted 40 (95%PI: 18–60), 90 (95%PI: 61–111), and 62 (95%PI: 21–108) critical cases per 100,000 residents in urban, rural, and remote areas, respectively. Vaccination of all individuals aged ≥ 30 years would have averted an average of 86–152 critical cases per 100,000 individuals, depending on the setting considered. Despite infections among children and young adults likely caused 70% of critical cases during the Delta wave in SWSZ, most vulnerable ages should remain a key priority target for vaccination against COVID-19. Food taboos have a negative impact on pregnant women and their fetuses by preventing them from consuming vital foods. Previous research found that pregnant women avoided certain foods during their pregnancy for a variety of reasons. This review aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of food taboo practices and associated factors in Ethiopia. In compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline, we searched the literature using PubMed/MEDLINE, AJOL (African Journal Online), HINARI, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Google electronic databases. The random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of food taboo and its determinants at a 95% confidence interval with their respective odds ratios. The pooled food taboo practice among Ethiopian pregnant women was 34.22% (95% CI 25.47–42.96), and after adjustment for publication bias with the trim-and-fill analysis, the pooled food taboo practice of pregnant women was changed to 21.31% (95% CI: 10.85–31.67%). Having less than a secondary education level (OR = 3.57; 95% CI 1.43–8.89), having no ANC follow-up (OR = 4.35; 95% CI 1.12–16.94), and being a rural resident (OR = 3.08; 95% CI 1.14–8.28) were the significant factors. Dairy products, some fruits, green leafy vegetables, meat, and honey are among the taboo foods. The most frequently stated reasons for this taboo practice were: fear of producing a big fetus, which is difficult during delivery; attachment to the fetus's body or head; and fear of fetal abnormality. This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 1190 randomly selected rural households in northwest Ethiopia to assess hand hygiene practice and associated factors. Frequent handwashing with rubbing agents, drying mechanisms; and condition of fingernails were used to assess hand hygiene practice. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with hand hygiene and statistically significant association was declared on the basis of adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) and p-values < 0.05. Results showed that 28.8% (95% CI 26.2, 31.4%) of the households had good hand hygiene practice. Good hand hygiene practice was significantly associated with formal education attended household heads (AOR 1.79, 95% CI 1.33, 2.40), family discussion on sanitation (AOR 1.56, 95% CI 1.08, 2.26), provision of health education (AOR 2.23, 95% CI 1.62, 3.06), and availability of water (AOR 3.51, 95% CI 1.02, 12.05). In conclusion, about one-third of the rural households had good hand hygiene practice and more than two-third had poor hand hygiene practice in the study area, and this may imply that hands in the area may play roles in spreading infections in the community. Malnutrition and morbidity are substantial problems in Ethiopia and are still pervasive and persistent. Despite this, there has been scant research on the coexistence of malnutrition and morbidity indicators. Moreover, previous studies were based on all data records of measurements from manifest data. Thus, this study aims to identify the correlates and coexistence of child malnutrition and morbidity within this country. Cross-sectional data which is collected by Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey were used. The generalized structural equation models were used to examine the association between child malnutrition, morbidity, and potential risk factors. The generalized structural equation models help to provide latent effects of child malnutrition and morbidity within a combined modeling framework. In addition, the generalized structural equation models make it possible to analyze malnutrition as a mediator of the association between selected risk factors and latent variable morbidity. The data analysis was done using SPSS AMOS and R software. The analysis indicated that children born to nourished mothers (AOR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.68–0.75), born to enough birth space between 24 and 47 months and (AOR = 0.93, 95% CI 0.88–0.99), 48 months and above (AOR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.65–0.76), being from middle-income households (AOR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.78–0.91), high-income households (AOR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.61–0.72), from mother with primary or secondary (AOR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.75–0.85) and higher education level (AOR = 0.57, 95% CI 0.41–0.78) were less affected by malnutrition. It also revealed that a child born second to third (AOR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.77–0.99), fourth and higher (AOR = 0.88, 95% CI 0.79–0.99) and children from a husband-educated higher level (AOR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.64–0.89) were less likely to be ill. Children who breastfeed (AOR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.80–0.99), from nourished mothers (AOR = 0.96, 95% CI 0.94–0.097), from middle income (AOR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.96–0.99), high-income households (AOR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.93–0.96), birth spacing 24–47 months (AOR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.98–1.00) and 48 months and above (AOR = 0.96, 95% CI 0.94–0.97) were indirectly affected by morbidity via malnutrition. This investigation has revealed that childhood malnutrition and morbidity remain major child health challenges in Ethiopia with demographic, socioeconomic, maternal, child, and geographic variables playing significant roles. Efforts to resolve these issues need to take these factors into account. This study aims to examine the effect of undernutrition on loss to follow-up (LTFU) in adults living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Ethiopia. We conducted an institution-based retrospective cohort study using medical records of 844 adults living with HIV receiving ART between June 2014 and June 2020 at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (Northwest Ethiopia). The effect of undernutrition on LTFU was examined using a proportional hazards regression model after adjusting potential confounders. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. At the end of the study period, 109 (12.9%) participants were considered LTFU, with an overall LTFU incidence of 5.3 per 100 person-years (95% CI 4.4, 6.4). The incidence of LTFU was higher in undernourished participants (8.2 per 100 person-years) compared to well-nourished participants (4.3 per 100 person-years). After adjusting for potential confounders, the adjusted risk of LTFU among undernourished participants was two times higher than in their well-nourished counterparts (AHR [adjusted hazard ratio]: 2.1, 95% CI 1.4, 3.2). Protecting water from cross contamination at source and point of use is an important strategy to improve water quality. However, water safety measures at the source and point of use may not be implemented in the rural communities. This community-based cross-sectional study was, therefore, conducted among 1190 randomly selected households in a rural setting of northwest Ethiopia to assess access to basic drinking water services, safe water storage, and household water treatment practices. Water service level was determined using JMP criteria and practices that prevent cross contamination of water at point of use were used to determine safe water storage. Results showed that 23.0% of the households had access to basic water services; 37.0% practiced safe water storage; and 15.4% practiced one or more household water treatment methods. Public taps (54.5%) and protected spring (25.1%) were the common water sources to rural communities in northwest Ethiopia. Boiling (43.2%), chlorination or water guard (26.8%), and plain sedimentation (23.0%) were among the household water treatment methods commonly practiced in the area. In conclusion, rural households in the studied region has low access to basic water services. Calcium (Ca2+) is one of the essential mineral nutrients for plant growth and development. However, the effects of long-term Ca2+ deficiency in orphan crops such as Tef [(Eragrostis tef) (Zucc.) Trotter], which accumulate high levels of Ca in the grains, remained unknown. Tef is a staple crop for nearly 70 million people in East Africa, particularly in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is one of the most nutrient-dense grains, and is also more resistant to marginal soils and climatic conditions than main cereals like corn, wheat, and rice. In this study, tef plants were grown in a hydroponic solution containing optimum (1 mM) or low (0.01 mM) Ca2+, and plant growth parameters and whole-genome transcriptome were analyzed. Ca+2-deficient plants exhibited leaf necrosis, leaf curling, and growth stunting symptoms. Ca2+ deficiency significantly decreased root and shoot Ca, potassium (K), and copper content in both root and shoots. At the same time, it greatly increased root iron (Fe) content, suggesting the role of Ca2+ in the uptake and/or translocation of these minerals. Transcriptomic analysis using RNA-seq revealed that members of Ca2+ channels, including the cyclic nucleotide-gated channels and glutamate receptor-like channels, Ca2+-transporters, Ca2+-binding proteins and Ca2+-dependent protein kinases were differentially regulated by Ca+2 treatment. Moreover, several Fe/metal transporters, including members of vacuolar Fe transporters, yellow stripe-like, natural resistance-associated macrophage protein, and oligo-peptide transporters, were differentially regulated between shoot and root in response to Ca2+ treatment. Taken together, our findings suggest that Ca2+ deficiency affects plant growth and mineral accumulation by regulating the transcriptomes of several transporters and signaling genes. Ethiopia has made improvements in the reduction of maternal mortality; the high burden of preeclampsia remains a concern in the Sidama region. This study aimed to measure the effect of preeclampsia on adverse maternal outcomes and identify risk factors among women with preeclampsia in Sidama region. A prospective open cohort study was conducted from August 8, 2019, to October 1, 2020. We enrolled a total of 1015 the pregnant women who had preeclampsia and normotensive women at ≥ 20 weeks of gestation and followed them until 42 days after delivery. A log-binomial logistic regression model was used to estimate the incidence of adverse maternal outcomes and its risk factors. There were 276 adverse maternal outcomes observed in the preeclampsia group compared to 154 adverse maternal outcomes in the normotensive group (P < 0.001). Women with severe features of preeclampsia had a 43% (aRR = 1.43, 95% CI 1.3–1.58) higher risk for adverse maternal outcomes compared to women without severe features of preeclampsia. Women without severe features of preeclampsia had a 39% (aRR = 1.39, 95% CI 1.2–1.76) higher risk for adverse maternal outcomes compared to women in the normotensive group. Household food insecurity remains highly prevalent in developing countries (including in Ethiopia) and it has been recognized as a serious public health problem. Several factors such as demographic, economic, social, and clinical factors influence household food insecurity, and these vary geographically. In this work, we investigate the geographical modification of the effect of several factors on chronic food insecurity. The data is from the Ethiopia socioeconomic survey conducted by the Ethiopia Central Statistics Agency (ECSA) in collaboration with the World Bank. Ethiopia socioeconomic survey is a long-term project to collect nationally representative panel survey of over 6500 households. A geo-additive model which accounts the structured and unstructured special effect was adopted to estimate household food insecurity risk factors. The study also revealed significant spatial variations on household food insecurity among administrative zones. Mainly, household living in the Sidama, Gamo Gofa, Shinille, Basketo, Wolyita, Wag Hemira, Liben, Awi, Eastern Tigray and West Harerghe zones, having higher food insecurity than the other zones in Ethiopia. Moreover, the analysis also showed that availability of credit services, proximity to service centers, average years of schooling of members of the household, and household assets are negatively associated with household food insecurity, whereas shocks, age, and dependency ratio increase the odds of a household to be food insecured. The generalized geo-additive mixed-effects model enables simultaneous modeling of spatial correlation, heterogeneity and possible nonlinear effects of covariates. Our study investigated the spatial heterogeneity of household level food insecurity, and its association with shocks, age, dependency ratio, availability of credit services, average years of schooling, and household assets.
