The study aimed to identify critical factors associated with the surgical stability of pogonion (Pog) by applying machine learning (ML) to predict relapse following two-jaw orthognathic surgery (2 J-OGJ). The sample set comprised 227 patients (110 males and 117 females, 207 training and 20 test sets). Using lateral cephalograms taken at the initial evaluation (T0), pretreatment (T1), after (T2) 2 J-OGS, and post treatment (T3), 55 linear and angular skeletal and dental surgical movements (T2-T1) were measured. Six ML modes were utilized, including classification and regression trees (CART), conditional inference tree (CTREE), and random forest (RF). The training samples were classified into three groups; highly significant (HS) (≥ 4), significant (S) (≥ 2 and < 4), and insignificant (N), depending on Pog relapse. RF indicated that the most important variable that affected relapse rank prediction was ramus inclination (RI), CTREE and CART revealed that a clockwise rotation of more than 3.7 and 1.8 degrees of RI was a risk factor for HS and S groups, respectively. RF, CTREE, and CART were practical tools for predicting surgical stability. More than 1.8 degrees of CW rotation of the ramus during surgery would lead to significant Pog relapse. We investigate the different roles played by nodes' network and non-network attributes in explaining the formation of European university collaborations from 2011 to 2016, in three European Research Council (ERC) domains: Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), Physical and Engineering Sciences (PE), Life Sciences (LS), as well as multidisciplinary collaborations. On link formation in collaboration networks, existing research has not yet compared and simultaneously examined both network and non-network attributes. Using four machine learning predictive algorithms (LASSO, Neural Network, Gradient Boosting, and Random Forest) our results show that, over various model specifications: (i) best model link formation accuracy is larger than 80%, (ii) among the non-network attributes, public funding plays an important role in PE and LS, (iii) network attributes count more than non-network attributes for the formation, sensibly increasing accuracy, (iv) feature-importance scores show a different ordering in the four domains, thus signalling different modes of knowledge production and transmission taking place within these different scientific communities. Living organisms including fishes, microbes, and animals can live in extremely cold weather. To stay alive in cold environments, these species generate antifreeze proteins (AFPs), also referred to as ice-binding proteins. Moreover, AFPs are extensively utilized in many important fields including medical, agricultural, industrial, and biotechnological. Several predictors were constructed to identify AFPs. However, due to the sequence and structural heterogeneity of AFPs, correct identification is still a challenging task. It is highly desirable to develop a more promising predictor. In this research, a novel computational method, named AFP-LXGB has been proposed for prediction of AFPs more precisely. The information is explored by Dipeptide Composition (DPC), Grouped Amino Acid Composition (GAAC), Position Specific Scoring Matrix-Segmentation-Autocorrelation Transformation (Sg-PSSM-ACT), and Pseudo Position Specific Scoring Matrix Tri-Slicing (PseTS-PSSM). Keeping the benefits of ensemble learning, these feature sets are concatenated into different combinations. The best feature set is selected by Extremely Randomized Tree-Recursive Feature Elimination (ERT-RFE). The models are trained by Light eXtreme Gradient Boosting (LXGB), Random Forest (RF), and Extremely Randomized Tree (ERT). Among classifiers, LXGB has obtained the best prediction results. The novel method (AFP-LXGB) improved the accuracies by 3.70% and 4.09% than the best methods. These results verified that AFP-LXGB can predict AFPs more accurately and can participate in a significant role in medical, agricultural, industrial, and biotechnological fields. Accurate identification of drug-targets in human body has great significance for designing novel drugs. Compared with traditional experimental methods, prediction of drug-targets via machine learning algorithms has enhanced the attention of many researchers due to fast and accurate prediction. In this study, we propose a machine learning-based method, namely XGB-DrugPred for accurate prediction of druggable proteins. The features from primary protein sequences are extracted by group dipeptide composition, reduced amino acid alphabet, and novel encoder pseudo amino acid composition segmentation. To select the best feature set, eXtreme Gradient Boosting-recursive feature elimination is implemented. The best feature set is provided to eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Random Forest, and Extremely Randomized Tree classifiers for model training and prediction. The performance of these classifiers is evaluated by tenfold cross-validation. Glass-forming ability (GFA) of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) is a determinant parameter which has been significantly studied. GFA improvements could be achieved through trial-and-error experiments, as a tedious work, or by using developed predicting tools. Machine-Learning (ML) has been used as a promising method to predict the properties of BMGs by removing the barriers in the way of its alloy design. This article aims to develop a ML-based method for predicting the maximum critical diameter (Dmax) of BMGs as a factor of their glass-forming ability. The main result is that the random forest method can be used as a sustainable model (R2 = 92%) for predicting glass-forming ability. Also, adding characteristic temperatures to the model will increase the accuracy and efficiency of the developed model. Comparing the measured and predicted values of Dmax for a set of newly developed BMGs indicated that the model is reliable and can be truly used for predicting the GFA of BMGs. The COVID-19 pandemic has put massive strains on hospitals, and tools to guide hospital planners in resource allocation during the ebbs and flows of the pandemic are urgently needed. We investigate whether machine learning (ML) can be used for predictions of intensive care requirements a fixed number of days into the future. Retrospective design where health Records from 42,526 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients in Denmark was extracted. Random Forest (RF) models were trained to predict risk of ICU admission and use of mechanical ventilation after n days (n = 1, 2, ..., 15). An extended analysis was provided for n = 5 and n = 10. Models predicted n-day risk of ICU admission with an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC-AUC) between 0.981 and 0.995, and n-day risk of use of ventilation with an ROC-AUC between 0.982 and 0.997. The corresponding n-day forecasting models predicted the needed ICU capacity with a coefficient of determination (R2) between 0.334 and 0.989 and use of ventilation with an R2 between 0.446 and 0.973. The forecasting models performed worst, when forecasting many days into the future (for large n). For n = 5, ICU capacity was predicted with ROC-AUC 0.990 and R2 0.928, and use of ventilator was predicted with ROC-AUC 0.994 and R2 0.854. Random Forest-based modelling can be used for accurate n-day forecasting predictions of ICU resource requirements, when n is not too large. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
