Multiple processes affect the fate of the radioactive isotope 129I in the environment. Primary categories of these processes include electron transfer reactions mediated by minerals and microbes, adsorption to sediments, interactions with organic matter, co-precipitation, and volatilization. A description of dominant biogeochemical processes is provided to describe the interrelationship of these processes and the associated iodine chemical species. The majority of the subsurface iodine fate and transport studies in the United States have been conducted at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sites where radioisotopes of iodine are present in the environment and stored waste. The DOE Hanford Site and Savannah River Site (SRS) are used to illustrate how the iodine species and dominant processes at a site are controlled by the prevailing site biogeochemical conditions. These sites differ in terms of climate (arid vs. sub-tropical), major geochemical parameters (e.g., pH ~7.5 vs. 4), and mineralogy (carbonate vs. Fe/Al oxide dominated). The iodine speciation and dominant processes at a site also have implications for selection and implementation of suitable remedy approaches for 129I.

Lakes are important water resources on the Mongolian Plateau (MP) for human's livelihood and production as well as maintaining ecosystem services. Previous studies, based on the Landsat-based analyses at epoch scale and visual interpretation approach, have reported a significant loss in the lake areas and numbers, especially from the late 1990s to 2010. Given the remarkable inter- and intra-annual variations of lakes in the arid and semi-arid region, a comprehensive picture of annual lake dynamics is needed. Here we took advantages of the power of all the available Landsat images and the cloud computing platform Google Earth Engine (GEE) to map water body for each scene, and then extracted lakes by post-processing including raster-to-vector conversion and separation of lakes and rivers. Continuous dynamics of the lakes over 1 km2 was monitored annually on the MP from 1991 to 2017. We found a significant shrinkage in the lake areas and numbers of the MP from 1991 to 2009, then the decreasing lakes on the MP have recovered since circa 2009. Specifically, Inner Mongolia of China experienced more dramatic lake variations than Mongolia. A few administrative regions with huge lakes, including Hulunbuir and Xilin Gol in Inner Mongolia and Ubsa in Mongolia, dominated the lake area variations in the study area, suggesting that the prior treatments on these major lakes would be critical for water management on the MP. The varied drivers of lake variations in different regions showed the complexity of factors impacting lakes. While both natural and anthropogenic factors significantly affected lake dynamics before 2009, precipitation played increasingly important role for the recovery of lakes on the MP after 2009.

How leaf traits vary with environmental and climatic variables in cold and arid environments is an essential issue in environmental ecology. Here, we analyzed the variations in leaf nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry and leaf dry matter content (LDMC) in Qilian juniper ( Juniperus przewalskii Kom.) growing in 14 environmentally different plots on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that the N and P concentrations, N:P ratio and LDMC of Qilian juniper were 10.89 mg.g −1 , 1.04 mg.g −1 , 10.80 and 483.06 mg.g −1 , respectively. The spatial coefficients of the variations in leaf N and P stoichiometry were significantly higher than the seasonal ones, and the correlations of leaf N and P concentrations with spatial variables were stronger than their correlations with the season. During the growing season, only the leaf N concentration and N:P ratio significantly increased. Soil nutrients were highly positively significantly correlated with leaf P concentrations but negatively correlated with the N:P ratio and LDMC. However, leaf N concentrations showed no significant correlations with soil nutrients. We suggest that the effects of temperature on the N concentration and LDMC were stronger than the effects of drought, while those on the P concentration and N:P ratio were weaker. Drought reduced leaf N and P concentrations and increased the N:P ratio and LDMC. In the arid region, with an increasing mean annual temperature (MAT), leaf N concentration significantly decreased, and LDMC significantly increased. In the semi-arid region, as MAT increased, leaf N and P concentrations significantly increased and LDMC and the N:P ratio significantly decreased. These opposite results supported the growth rate hypothesis that plant N and P concentrations increase while the N:P ratio and LDMC decrease as the growth rate increases.

Isotopic composition of gross rainfall has been extensively used as a conservative tracer to track water movement and other hydrological processes in vegetated ecosystems. Recent studies from forest ecosystems, however, demonstrated that vegetation canopies can alter the isotopic composition of rainwater during rainfall partitioning into throughfall and stemflow, likely leading to errors and biases in aforementioned studies. No known studies, to date, had investigated this topic in shrub-dominated arid and semi-arid ecosystems where water is typically the driving factor in ecological, hydrological and biogeochemical processes. In this study, event-based gross rainfall, the throughfall and stemflow induced by shrubs of Caragana korshinskii were measured and samples were collected within a water-limited arid desert ecosystem of northern China, and their water stable isotopes (18O and 2H) were also analyzed in the laboratory. We mainly aimed to investigate whether there is an isotopic enrichment or depletion in stemflow and throughfall in comparison to gross rainfall, and to evaluate the possible underlying mechanisms. Our results indicated an enrichment of both isotopes in stemflow, while a general more depletion in throughfall than in gross rainfall, which is presumably affected by a combinative effects of canopy evaporation, isotopic exchange, and selective canopy storage. Modern water-saving irrigation technology has expanded the scale of agricultural oases in arid and semi-arid regions of China. In this study, we used Landsat MSS and Landsat TM/ETM remote sensing data to assess changes in oasis scale and water availability with reference to differing water management practices in the Manas River Basin of north-western China from 1975 to 2015. We used the water-heat balance index H0 to determine oasis stability over time and constructed a suitable-scale calculation model for arid and semi-arid regions to assess the suitable development scale and cultivated land area in the study area. The implementation of water-saving technology in 2000 effectively improved the utilization efficiency of water resources and accelerated the formation of artificial oases; these expanded by 3873.3 km2 while natural oasis area was reduced by 3485.0 km2. The oasis stability index H0 was less than the critical stability index of 0.5 throughout the study period, implying that these areas were in a metastable state and unsuitable for further development. Therefore, in order to improve oasis stability, both scale and agricultural area should be further controlled. At present, actual oasis scale exceeds appropriate scale by 1.1 times and agricultural area exceeds suitable area by 2.5 times. To ensure the stability of the oasis, its area should be maintained at 3942.28–4481.06 km2 and the cultivated land should be maintained at 1576.91–1792.42 km2.

In the arid regions of south eastern Tunisia, the land use is predominated by olive trees cropping, where two main cultivation strategies can be found: using of water harvesting techniques to overcome the scarcity and variability of rainfall (in the Matmata mountains) and dryland farming (in the Jeffara plain). In these arid areas, soil moisture is the main limiting factor for crop growth and it should be monitored to benchmark different management options. Different conventional methods are available for point soil moisture monitoring, but the increased availability of remotely sensed data offers major opportunities for spatial analyses. The aim of this paper is to perform a comparative study on the soil water status for rainfed olive tree growing in three major landscape areas: in the mountains with traditional water harvesting check dams (called jessour), in the piedmont on floodwater harvesting (called tabias), and in the plain with full dryland farming conditions. Time series of Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII), derived from Landsat 7 satellite, were retrieved from the novel Google Earth Engine platform. NDII values were related to measured soil water content, which was taken at non-regular time intervals between 2009 and 2017. The analysis of NDII data, indicating the water content of the vegetation, shows that jessour can adequately ensure water supply for olive trees. Increased soil moisture conditions in the jessour areas are visible both in the dry and the humid seasons, indicating the effectiveness of this traditional water harvesting system. Moreover, our results show that Landsat 7 NDII values are correlated with the root-zone soil moisture in the monitoring sites (r2 ranging from 0.62 to 0.67), allowing the use of NDII to estimate soil water contents in our study area.

The water resources in arid and semi-arid regions are critical to providing reliable sources of water for food production and ecosystem functioning. In this study, continuous wavelet transform and wavelet coherence were used to analyse the runoff periodicity and relationship with climate indices, respectively. Additionally, the double mass curve (DMCD), the slope changing ratio of cumulative quantity (SCRCQ) and the Choudhury–Yang equation (Budyko-CY) methods for different potential evapotranspiration data (E0(E0-20 cm, E0-PM, E0-H)) were used to separate the impacts of climate changes and anthropogenic activities on runoff variations. The results demonstrated that the flow regimes in high and low flow seasons were not obvious shifts, and that after implementation of the Ecological Water Diversion Project (EWDP), ecosystems were gradually restored in the downstream portion of the Heihe River Basin (DHRB). Periodicities of 1–7 years and 1–5.8 years were detected in Yingluoxia and Zhengyixia, respectively. Additionally, on a 1–148.2 month timescale, the monthly runoff with AO, NAO, PDO, and AMO had significant resonance periodicity and a 1–48 month Spearman's lag correlation. On the annual and high-flow, climate changes dominant determinant to an increase of runoff for the DMCD and Budyko-CY in period 2, SCRCQ and Budyko-CY in period 3 for different E0 in the upstream (UHRB). In the midstream (MHRB) region, anthropogenic activities played a dominant role in deducing the runoff by the SCRCQ and Budyko-CY methods for different E0 values in period 3. During the low-flow season, the impact of human activities in the UHRB and climate changes in the MHRB was significant for period 2 and 3. Therefore, the impacts of climate change and human activities on runoff changes caused by the introduction of different E0 on different timescales should be fully considered in the future.

Water security is a major concern in recent years, especially, in semi-arid and arid regions, which are adversely impacted due to extensive anthropogenic and climatic changes across the globe. Present study investigates the long-term changes in streamflows, their quantitative attribution and socio-environmental implications for a climatically sensitive Tapi basin in west central India. The abrupt and gradual changes in streamflows have been detected over the period 1973–2013 using non-parametric Pettit's and Mann-Whitney U tests; and Modified Mann-Kendall, Spearman's Rho and Sen's slope estimator tests respectively. The streamflow analyses revealed heterogeneity across the basin, wherein the tributaries exhibited higher variability in annual runoff compared to the Tapi River. The spatial analyst tool of ArcGIS has been used to graphically demonstrate the spatial variability in rainfall and streamflow trends across the basin. The streamflows exhibited predominantly decreasing trends across the basin, except in the upper reaches of the Tapi River. The decreasing trends in streamflow are largely attributed to anthropogenic activities such as changes in the land use patterns viz., increase in agriculture area, construction of minor and medium hydraulic structures, decrease in forest cover, rapid urbanization, excessive groundwater extraction and streamflow regulations. The anthropogenic activities played a major role in declining streamflow trends in the Tapi basin, contributing about 68%–99% (average 85%) decline in total runoff, compared to rainfall variability, which contributed around 1%–32% (average 15%) decrease in total runoff. The analysis of water stress levels at sub-catchment scale exhibited significant rise in percentage of population living in the basin facing chronic water shortage (i.e.

Global warming is widely believed to extend the length of plant growing season (LOS) through advancing the start (SOS) and delaying the end (EOS) of plant growing season. However, divergent directions of phenological changes under current climate warming have been frequently reported but poorly understood. Here we collate the long-term filed phenological and climatic records at 8 sites in Inner Mongolian grassland to assess how climate changes regulate the phenological variations with divergent directions and magnitudes in this region. We found that the spring climatic changes (e.g., changes in air temperature and precipitation during March and April) correlate well with variations in SOS. However, our in situ observations show divergent changes in SOS across space, which can be attributed to the generally insignificant changes of climates during the preseasons of SOS. The climate warming prior to the end of plant growing season (EOS) was generally significant at most sites. Nevertheless, the effects of such warming on changes in EOS were possibly overshadowed by the impacts of precipitation in this arid/semi-arid region. As a result, the temporal variations in EOS distribute divergent directions and magnitudes across space and species. Using climate attributes during the preseason of EOS alone can hardly explain changes in EOS. Alternatively, by introducing changes in SOS as an additional driving factor, variations in EOS can be well represented. We therefore infer that plant phenologies can divergently response to current global warming (depending on the seasonal patterns of warming). Moreover, other influential factors such as precipitation and the interactions between the timings of different phenological stages are also needed in predicting the phenological dynamics.

CaCO3 precipitation is one of the most common and important geochemical processes in the arid inland waters and it can be significantly affected by interaction of DOM with Ca2+. Effects of the drastic seasonal change of water salinity on interaction of DOM with Ca2+ in the arid inland waters were completely unknown. In the present study, complexation of DOM with Ca2+ in the freshwater (0.5‰ salinity) and hypersaline water (70‰ salinity) were comparatively examined by excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence quenching titration and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The complexation of DOM with Ca2+ was significantly influenced by the drastic change of salinity. The ITC complexation is exothermic at 0.5‰ salinity but turns to an endothermic process at 70‰ salinity. More energy is needed for the complex reaction between DOM and Ca2+ under the hypersaline condition than in the fresh water. Fluorescence quenching titration indicates that DOM has stronger binding ability toward Ca2+ in the freshwater than in the saline water, and more fractions of DOM in the freshwater are accessible to Ca2+ than in the saline water. Ca2+ complexation in the DOM is dominated by the tryptophan-like components at both salinities and the complexation of Ca2+ with fulvic acid-like components is ignorable. The findings is important for understanding the aquatic geochemical processes in some lakes that seriously affected by irrigation water use in the arid zone.

Water sources used for plant identification coupled with stable isotopes are essential to improving the understanding of eco-hydrological processes and ecological management in water-limited ecosystems. Many approaches associated with stable isotopes have been used to determine plant water source apportionment. However, inter-comparisons of different methods are still limited, especially for Bayesian mixing models. In this study, we tested linear mixing models (IsoSource) and Bayesian models (SIAR, MixSIR and MixSIAR) to identify sources of water absorbed by Vitex negundo and Sophora viciifolia (shrubs) and Artemisia gmelinii (subshrub) during the growing season in the semiarid Loess Plateau. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the predicted plant water source fractions using only stable hydrogen isotope (δ2H) and only stable oxygen isotope (δ18O) with the IsoSource model. No significant difference was found in plant water source apportionment by the three Bayesian mixing models combined with δ2H and δ18O except for individual months. The SIAR and MixSIAR models detected no pronounced seasonal variations in plant water uptake, while the MixSIR model did detect seasonal variations. Overall, the SIAR and MixSIAR models exhibited relatively better water source apportionment performances than that of the MixSIR model. This discrepancy may be attributed to the difference in the post distribution simulation algorithm. This study provides critical insights into choosing a suitable method for identifying plant water source apportionment in arid and semiarid regions.

The ecosystem service value (ESV) can be quantitatively assessed based on changes in ecosystem services. However, few studies have considered two scientific problems: (1) how to quantify the contributions of factors that drive ecosystem services, and (2) how to improve the spatial variability of ESV distributions. In this study, a geographic information system was used to investigate spatial and temporal changes in three factors, i.e., vegetation cover (VC), human disturbance index (HDI), and temperature vegetation drought index (TVDI), and their effects on the ESV in the Manas River basin. We found that high VC areas were expanding and the HDI was significantly enhanced. The contributions of VC, HDI, and TVDI to the total ESV were 38.0%, 31.6%, and 30.4%, respectively, and the total ESV increased by 3.7%. The cold spots were mainly distributed in the desert area, mountains, and the southern parts of the oasis area, whereas the hot spots occurred mainly to the north of the oasis area and southwest of the desert. VC, HDI, and TVDI reflected the spatial and temporal differences in the ESV determined in this river basin ecosystem. Furtherly, it may be possible to formulate appropriate ecological compensations by analyzing the changes in ESV cold/hot spots. The results of this study provide a scientific basis to facilitate the selection of the key factors that drive changes in the ESV in arid land areas, as well as for achieving a sustainable basin management in similar regions around the world.

The Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau (HTP), often known as the “Third Pole” and the “Asian Water Tower”, is the source of water resources for many Asian rivers and in turn for hundreds of millions of people living downstream. The HTP has direct impacts on the establishment and maintenance of Asian monsoon, and therefore on the climate of its surrounding areas. Besides, soil moisture plays a critical role in the hydrological cycle and is a critical link between land surface and atmosphere. Hence, soil moisture was greatly emphasized by Global Climate Observing System Programme as an Essential Climate Variable. However, little is known about soil moisture changes on the HTP from a long-term perspective. By comparing remotely sensed and modelled soil moisture datasets against in-situ observations from 100 observation stations, here we find that Noah performed better than other soil moisture datasets. In past years, soil moisture first decreased and then increased obviously. In most regions on HTP, precipitation changes can be taken as the major cause behind soil moisture variations. In future, there is persistently decreasing soil moisture trend since ~2010 with a decreasing rate of −0.044 kg/m2/10a, −0.031 kg/m2/10a and −0.0p 88 kg/m2/10a under RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively, in CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparision Project Phase 5). Specifically, a sudden decrease of soil moisture with a rate of −0.372 kg/m2/10a can be expected after ~2080 under RCP8.5 scenario. Amplifying terrestrial aridity due to increasing precipitation but more significant increasing potential evapotranspiration potentially results in drying HTP. Potential water deficiency for Asian rivers due to drying HTP should arouse considerable concerns.

With intensification of climate change and human activities, warming and drying trend has brought severe challenges to pastoral areas in arid and semi-arid regions. Consequently, it becomes imperative to explore non-stationarity features of drought in such regions. In this research, the SPEIbase v2.4 datasets with a 0.5 degree spatial resolution was employed to extract Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) in Inner Mongolia, China. We explored non-stationarity characteristics of drought using Breaks For Additive Seasonal and Trend (BFAST) method, investigated the variation characteristics of drought intensity in each time interval using intensity analysis method, and finally assessed the spatial and temporal gathering characteristics of drought with Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF). The results showed that trend of regional drought had a tendency towards drought conditions, which is particularly significant from the year 1945 onwards in the overall Inner Mongolia. We have explored a long behavior of drought in semiarid and central regions of cold semihumid climate zone throughout the whole study period, and detected a drying trend in northeastern regions of Inner Mongolia at the latter decades. The overall drought intensity displayed an increasing trend first, which was followed by a decreasing trend, among which the extreme drought was dominant in period of 1960-1970. EOF mode1 showed that variation intensity of drought showed a not significantly increasing trend in the entire region, and the drought with high amplitude was likely to occur in the central region. EOF mode2 showed that variation intensity of drought displayed the opposite phases between the eastern and the western regions. The northeastern regions were prone to display a high amplitude of drought.

Gully erosion susceptibility mapping is a fundamental tool for land-use planning aimed at mitigating land degradation. However, the capabilities of some state-of-the-art data-mining models for developing accurate maps of gully erosion susceptibility have not yet been fully investigated. This study assessed and compared the performance of two different types of data-mining models for accurately mapping gully erosion susceptibility at a regional scale in Chavar, Ilam, Iran. The two methods evaluated were: Certainty Factor (CF), a bivariate statistical model; and Maximum Entropy (ME), an advanced machine learning model. Several geographic and environmental factors that can contribute to gully erosion were considered as predictor variables of gully erosion susceptibility. Based on an existing differential GPS survey inventory of gully erosion, a total of 63 eroded gullies were spatially randomly split in a 70:30 ratio for use in model calibration and validation, respectively. Accuracy assessments completed with the receiver operating characteristic curve method showed that the ME-based regional gully susceptibility map has an area under the curve (AUC) value of 88.6% whereas the CF-based map has an AUC of 81.8%. According to jackknife tests that were used to investigate the relative importance of predictor variables, aspect, distance to river, lithology and land use are the most influential factors for the spatial distribution of gully erosion susceptibility in this region of Iran. The gully erosion susceptibility maps produced in this study could be useful tools for land managers and engineers tasked with road development, urbanization and other future development.

Advection fog is the sole source of water for many near-the-sea arid areas worldwide such as the lomas, i.e. fog-dependant landscapes of the coastal zone of Peru and Northern Chile, where deforestation occurred since 16th century, leading to a progressive and severe desertification. There, today's local socio-ecological systems suffer from lack of freshwater because they cannot rely anymore on the contribution of fog captured by vegetation. This paper presents the results of an experimental reforestation project carried out in Mejia (Peru), where tree seedlings of five native and exotic species were planted in two permanent plots in 1996. Part of the seedlings were irrigated during the first three years after planting, others not. The irrigation was carried out thanks to water harvesting by large fog collectors. From the third year onwards, all trees relied only on fog water collected by their canopy. Survival rate, height, and root-collar diameter were monitored until 2010, when also the soil carbon and nitrogen stocks were measured. Fifteen years after the planting, about 65% of trees were still alive and growing, and reforestation had induced substantial carbon sequestration both above- and below-ground. Of the tree species, Acacia saligna was definitely best performing than the other, with most of the above ground carbon stored in its biomass and a consequent high efficiency as natural fog collector. Overall, the combination of fog collection by nets and the plantation of trees showing good fog collection capacity, represented a successful strategy for allowing reforestation of arid environments and induced fast and substantial carbon sequestration. Greater efforts should be thus devoted for this purpose, paying special attention to the selection of the most suitable tree species to plant, especially looking at the local biodiversity. This work is dedicated to the memory of Professor Mario Falciai, passed away in 2015, who firstly conceived the experiment and attended all the work since 1996, bringing in our University the idea of Fog Collection for sustainable water management.

Leaf Area Index (LAI; as an indicator of the health) of the mangrove ecosystems on the northern coasts of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman was measured in the field and modeled in response to observed (1986-2017) and predicted (2018-2100) drought occurrences (quantified using the Standardized Precipitation Index [SPI]). The relationship of LAI with the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) obtained from satellite images was quantified, the LAI between 1986 and 2017 retrospectively estimated, and a relationship between LAI and SPI developed for the same period. Long-term climate data were used as input in the RCP8.5 climate change scenario to reconstruct recent and forecast future drought intensities. Both the NDVI and the SPI were strongly related with the LAI, indicating that realistic LAI values were derived from historic satellite data to portray annual changes of LAI in response to changes in SPI. Our findings show that projected future drought intensities modeled by the RCP8.5 scenario increase more and future LAIs decreased more on the coasts of the Gulf of Oman than the coasts of the Persian Gulf in the coming decades. The year 1998 was the most significant change-point for mean annual rainfall amounts and drought occurrences as well as for LAIs and at no time between 1998 and 2017 or between 2018 and 2100 are SPI and LAI values expected to return to pre-1998 values. LAI and SPI are projected to decline sharply around 2030, reach their lowest levels between 2040 and 2070, and increase and stabilize during the late decades of the 21st century at values similar to the present time. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive picture of the responses of mangroves to fluctuating future drought conditions, facilitating the development of management plans for these vulnerable habitats in the face of future climate change.

Groundwater pollution in Israel mainly occurs in the populated urban areas. Yet, in the 90's a major salinization was identified in a deep well in the northeastern part of the Negev desert, and a trend of increasing salinity was recognized in an adjacent spring. Since then the salinity of the spring is on the rise reaching a rate of 21 mgCl/L per month. New geochemical data allows the identification of the source, composition and volume of the contaminant, as well as its dispersion in the aquifer. The source of the contamination is attributed to highly saline (~40,000 mgCl/L), acidic and trace elements-rich industrial wastewater that leaked from evaporation ponds and also drained through karstic sinkhole to the subsurface over a period of decades. The contamination is reflected by a sharp increase in the concentrations of most major elements and by a moderate increase in a few trace elements. The total waste water volume that leaked is assessed to be 75 MCM. The study reveals that most of the contaminated water is still far upstream of the natural outlet. Due to the specific geological configuration the highly contaminated groundwater is channeled into a narrow corridor of an elongated syncline. Unlike other similar contamination cases around the world, pumping along this syncline can reduce the flow of the contaminated water further downstream towards a region where it disperses. The study provides the decision makers with tools that can reduce the environmental hazard and enable development of water production in this arid region. The current research emphasizes the importance of a combined geological, hydrological and geochemical study of a contaminated aquifer to fully understand the flow regime and contamination process. Such studies are a crucial step before an optimal mitigation action can be undertaken to rehabilitate a contaminated aquifer.

Ammopiptanthus mongolicus, the only drought-resistant, leguminous, evergreen shrub in the desert region of China, is endangered due to climate change and its growth stages urgently need to be non-destructively detected. Although many spectral indexes have been proposed for characterizing vegetation, the relationships are often inconsistent, making it challenging to characterize the status of vegetation across all growth stages. This study investigated the Spectral Features of the endangered desert plant A. mongolicus at different growth stages, and extracted the identified Spectral Features for the establishment of detection and discrimination models using Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) and Fisher Linear Discriminate Analysis (FLDA), respectively. The results showed spectral reflectance of A. mongolicus differed across different growth stages and it generally increased with the degree of senescence. Poor performance was found in the single factor model, with RMSE ranging from 20.34 to 27.39 or Overall Accuracy of 60% in the validation datasets. The multivariate PLSR model, based on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Red Edge Index (NDRE), Physiological Reflectance Index (PhRI) and Plant Senescence Reflectance Index (PSRI), turned out to be accurate in detecting the growth stages, with R2 of 0.89 and RMSE of 12.46, and the performance of the multivariate FLDA model based on 14 Spectral Features was acceptable, with an Overall Accuracy of 89% in the validation datasets. This research provides useful insights for timely and non-destructively discriminating different growth stages by using multivariate PLSR and FLDA analysis.

Permafrost soils store a large amount of nitrogen (N) which could be activated under the continuous climate warming. However, compared with carbon (C) stock, little is known about the size and spatial distribution of permafrost N stock. By combining measurements from 519 pedons with two machine learning models (supporting vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF)), we estimated the size and spatial distribution of N stock across the Tibetan alpine permafrost region. We then compared these spatially-explicit N estimates with simulated N stocks from the Community Land Model (CLM). We found that N density (N amount per area) in the top three meters was 1.58 kg N m−2 (interquartile range: 1.40–1.76) across the study area, constituting a total of 1802 Tg N (interquartile range: 1605–2008), decreasing from the southeast to the northwest of the plateau. N stored below 1 m accounted for 48% of the total N stock in the top three meters. CLM4.5 significantly underestimated the N stock on the Tibetan Plateau, primarily in areas with arid/semi-arid climate. The process of biological N fixation played a key role in the underestimation of N stock prediction. Overall, our study highlights that it is imperative to improve the simulation of N processes and permafrost N stocks in land models to better predict ecological consequences induced by rapid and widespread permafrost degradation.

Net primary productivity (NPP) and carbon use efficiency (CUE) are common ecological indicators for assessing the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, despite their widespread use, considerable uncertainties exist toward the response patterns of NPP and CUE to climate variability along an aridity gradient, especially for grassland ecosystems. The aridity index (AI) was calculated in this study to specify arid-humid zones across the global grassland ecosystem. The dynamics of grassland NPP, CUE, and their dependence on climate under different AI levels from 2000 to 2013 were investigated. Results showed that the NPP and CUE of grasslands demonstrated a slightly increasing trend with regional increasing precipitation in most AI zones, except for arid regions (AR) from 2000 to 2013. The NPP and CUE of grasslands exhibited a remarkable spatial heterogeneity in different AI zones. High NPP values mainly occurred in the dry and sub-humid (DSH) and humid (HU) regions of Southern Hemisphere with warm and wet climate. High CUE values were mostly found in the HU of the Northern Hemisphere with cold and wet climate. In addition, low NPP and CUE values were observed in most parts of AR and semi-AR (SAR) with hot and dry climate. Overall, the NPP and CUE of grasslands were significantly affected by precipitation at the global scale. Specifically, grassland NPP was positively correlated with the mean annual precipitation (MAP) in SAR and AR, but negatively related with the MAP in the HU region. The positive correlation between NPP and mean annual temperature (MAT) was found only for HU regions. Grassland CUE indicated a positive relation with MAP, but a negative relation was observed with MAT in all AI zones. The correlation coefficients between CUE and MAP decreased from AR to HU regions. This finding indicated that grassland CUE was highly sensitive to precipitation in dry areas, but this relationship weakened in HU ecosystems.

China is a large agricultural country, and food security is significantly limited by the shortage of water resources. Plastic mulching technology can effectively modify the crop growth environment and crop production due to differences in climatic conditions, spatial distribution characteristics, and cropping systems and methods. In this study, a meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively analyze the effects of plastic film mulching and residual plastic on yield and water use efficiency (WUE) of maize, wheat, potato, and cotton in China based on 266 peer-reviewed publications. The results showed that plastic mulching significantly increased crop yield (24.32%) and WUE (27.63%). Plastic mulching had the greatest effect of potato on yield (30.62%) and WUE (30.34%) in China. At a regional scale, plastic mulching performed best in Northwest China, and crop yield and WUE were influenced by film color, mulching method, and crop type. Black film and ridge row mulching were more favorable to crop growth and increased crop yield and WUE in arid areas of China. There was no significant effect on crop yield of residual plastic between 0 and 240 kg/ha, but the yield decreased significantly with increased time and residual plastic film >240 kg/ha. In conclusion, although plastic mulching can significantly increase crop yield and WUE, especially in dryland agriculture, we should also improve the technology for recovering residual plastic film to protect the environment.

Soil moisture (Ms) strongly influences dynamic changes in soil respiration (Rs) and is thus an important factor when predicting soil carbon emissions. However, the various sources of Ms (rainfall, groundwater, and condensation) exert complicated and uncertain effects on Rs. This study examined the growth seasonal variation (from April to October) of Rs and the diurnal variation in a cascade ecosystem consisting of sandy bare ground, a transitional artificial Populus forest, and a meadow Phragmites communis community in China's Horqin sandy land. Simultaneous measurements of the 0–10 cm depth soil temperature (Ts) and Ms, rainfall, the surface air relative humidity and the groundwater depth were collected. The results revealed that in sandy bare ground with Ms below field capacity, Ms had a greater impact on Rs than Ts, and rainfall could increase Rs. The effect of condensation on Rs during periods of continuous drought could not be ignored. In the meadowlands with Ms above field capacity, the groundwater affected Rs indirectly by regulating Ms and the relationship with Ts, and rainfall had an adverse effect on Rs. The effects of rainfall, Ms and Ts on Rs were minimum as Ms approached the saturation water content. In the transitional forest, Ms and Ts were the main factors controlling Rs. The most favorable Ms for Rs was close to the field capacity. The results emphasize that field capacity and saturation water content are the demarcation points of a soil carbon emissions prediction model, and the effect of different hydrological conditions and Ts on Rs at each segment are reconsidered accordingly. Ultimately, the carbon emission patterns of the cascade ecosystems in arid and semi-arid areas are extremely complicated and have to be considered specially for estimating terrestrial carbon emissions.

Water scarcity has received global attention in the last decade as it challenges food security in arid and semi-arid regions, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. This research assesses the possible alleviation of water scarcity by reducing the water footprint in crop production through the application of soil mulching and drip irrigation. The study is the first to do so at catchment scale, taking into account various crops, multi-cropping, cropping patterns, and spatial differences in climate, soil, and field management factors, using field survey and local data. The AquaCrop-OS model and the global water footprint assessment (WFA) standard were used to assess the green and blue water footprint (WF) of ten major crops in the Upper Litani Basin (ULB) in Lebanon. The blue water saving and blue water scarcity reduction under these two alternative practices were compared to the current situation. The results show that the WF of crop production is more sensitive to climate than soil type. The annual blue WF of summer crops was largest when water availability was lowest. Mulching reduced the blue WF by 3.6% and mulching combined with drip irrigation reduced it by 4.7%. The blue water saving from mulching was estimated about 6.3 million m3/y and from mulching combined with drip irrigation about 8.3 million m3/y. This is substantial but by far not sufficient to reduce the overall blue WF in summer to a sustainable level at catchment scale.

Snow depth plays an essential role in the water and energy balance of the land surface. It is of special importance in arid and semi-arid regions of Central Asia. Owing to the limited availability of field observations, the spatial and temporal variations of snow depth are still poorly known. Using the Japanese 55-year (JRA-55) and the ERA-Interim reanalysis snow depth products, we considered four global climate models (GCMs) applied in the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISI-MIP), examining how they represent snow depth in Central Asia during the period 1986–2005 in terms of spatial and temporal characteristics. We also investigated changes of winter (January–March) snow depth in Central Asia, at 1.5 °C and 2 °C global warming levels. Finally, the joint probabilistic behavior of winter temperature and precipitation at 1.5 °C and 2 °C global warming are investigated using the kernel density estimator (KDE). The result shows that the snow depth climatology of Central Asia is generally well simulated in both spatial pattern and temporal (inter-annual and inter-seasonal) pattern. All models approximately simulate the winter maximum and the summer minimum values of snow depth but tend to overestimate the amplitude during October–December. Only the trend in HadGEM2-ES matches fairly well to the JRA-55 reanalysis snow depth. When comparing the projections of spatial distribution of winter snow depth, distinctive spatial pattern is noted at both 1.5 °C and 2 °C global warming levels, when the snow depth is shown to increase in northeastern and to decrease in midwestern regions of Central Asia. According to the joint probability distributions of precipitation and temperature, Central Asia will tend to experience a warmer and wetter winter at both 1.5 °C and 2 °C global warming levels, which can be associated with an increase in snow depth in the northeastern regions.

The natural hydrologic processes that create and maintain the diversity of aquatic and riparian habitats along the World's streams and rivers have been profoundly altered by humans. Diversion of surface water to support production agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions has degraded ecosystems but also created potential habitat along and in canals specifically designed to transport water. The prevalence of canals and the immense amount of water used for agriculture have created these new artificial stream systems. This study demonstrates the potential for irrigation canals to support riparian and aquatic communities similar to natural streams in urban/residential and agricultural landscapes. We examined the hydrological and ecological characteristics of streams and irrigation canals in urban and agricultural landscapes in northeastern Colorado, typical of regions dominated by irrigation-supported agriculture. Flow patterns in canals depended on their size and had a range of patterns with potential ecological consequences such as rapidly rising and falling water stage, intermittent dry periods, and delayed peak and base flows compared to natural streams. Despite these hydrologic differences, the taxonomic and functional composition of riparian plant and aquatic macroinvertebrate communities indicated that ecological similarities exist between streams and canals, but are dependent, in part, on their landscape setting with stronger similarities in agricultural areas. We also tested the influence of characterizing taxa by functional groups using physiology, ecology and life history traits to explore attributes of habitats including woody canopy structure and water quality. We used a Habitat Quality Index (HQI) that combined physical and biological measures into a single index. Streams scored higher on average within agriculture and urban/residential settings compared to canals; however, one third of urban canals scored above the average of agricultural streams. This multidisciplinary study shows that irrigation canals can be valuable riparian and aquatic habitat, especially in regions with severely degraded streams.

Knowledge of forest water use is crucial to water resources managers, especially in arid environments. Flood irrigation has sometimes been used to ameliorate forest decline, however, there has only been limited research on vegetation responses to these interventions. We undertook a study to quantify evapotranspiration (ET) and its components, transpiration (T) and evaporation (E), of two Populus euphratica Oliv. stands (MA: middle-aged and OA: old-aged) with and without flood irrigation in the lower Heihe River Basin of NW China. ET and T were measured using eddy covariance and sap flow methods, respectively. Understory E was estimated by difference. Annual ET was 766.4 mm in the MA stand and 532.5 mm in the OA stand with an average of 4.2 and 2.9 mm d−1 during the growing season, respectively. ET of the MA stand was 44% higher than that of the OA stand, with contributions of 28% and 16% from E and T. Despite stand density, leaf area index and canopy cover being higher in the MA than OA stand sapwood area within the two stands was similar (MA 6.04 m2 ha−1 and OA 6.02 m2 ha−1). We hypothesised lower understory E and a lower E to ET ratio in the MA stand than OA stand. However, E was approximately 63% of ET in both stands. Therefore, we conclude that differences in ET, T and E were mainly associated with the flood irrigation. This was further supported by the comparable ET between the OA stand and the other studies in arid regions of Central Asia. In conclusion, flood irrigation has a less significant effect on canopy water use (T) than understory E suggesting alternatives to flood irrigation might be more appropriate in this water-limited ecosystem.

In arid and semi-arid areas, unsuitable afforestation programs may cause soil water deficit and even, in some cases, deep-soil desiccation and the subsequent death of part of the vegetation. However, the benefits of preferential flow through decayed root channels for supplying water in the dried soil layers are rarely evaluated. This study examines the effects of root channels on soil water content (SWC) and infiltration (initial and steady-state) in two planted species with high drought tolerance, namely: Korshinsk peashrub (Caragana korshinskii Kom.), and red plum apricot (Armeniaca vulgaris Lam.), using bare land as control site and published data from alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plots to refine results analysis. The infiltration rates were measured using a double-ring infiltrometer in areas with alive and decayed roots; and methylene blue was used to trace the pathways of water flow. The highest SWC appeared in the Korshinsk peashrub land, whereas the alfalfa grassland had the lowest SWC; and the differences of SWC among treatments were significant at all soil layers. Korshinsk peashrub had the highest steady infiltration rates, which were about 23% and 83% higher than those rates measured in the fruit tree plantation and alfalfa grasslands, respectively. The steady infiltration rates were significantly and positively correlated with the average root diameter and area. Within the same species, the decayed root plots significantly increased the soil water infiltration capacity compared to the alive root plots. Considering the water scarcity conditions of the study area, the preferential flow formed through decomposed roots was conducive to soil water supplement, appearing as a natural compensation mechanism caused by dead vegetation. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of soil water infiltration during root decay of the plants in water-limited ecosystems, and how this dynamic replenishes soil moisture and alleviates soil desiccation.

Actual evapotranspiration (ETa) is an essential component of Earth's global energy balance and water cycle. The Paris Agreement aspires to limit global mean surface warming to2 °C and no1.5 °C relative to preindustrial levels. However, it is uncertain how this global level will impact the shifts in the extents of sandy areas caused by global desertification. Using Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP) datasets and advection-aridity models, we investigated the spatiotemporal features of ETa in sandy areas in northern China under global warming scenarios of 1.5 °C and 2.0 °C. The four climate models indicated significant increases in ETa in arid areas across northwestern China. Over time, the ETa value under only the representative concentration pathway 2.6 (RCP2.6) emission scenario increased towards a plateau and significantly increased in the other three emission scenarios (P 0.01) under global warming of 1.5 °C and 2.0 °C. In terms of the spatial variations, ETa showed an increasing trend in all seasons except winter. The maximum ETa was 84.61 mm, and high values were mainly located in the southeast of the study area. Precipitation and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) showed good correlations with ETa in the sandy areas in northern China. The sandy areas in northern China showed decreasing trends (0.45 km

With the continuous expansion of drylands in the context of global climate change, governments have implemented a series of greening policies such as afforestation, to reduce ecological degradation. However, owing to historical conditions and technical constraints, few attempts have been made to quantitatively assess the differences in carbon sequestration capacity and the associated environmental controls among major ecosystems in the arid and semi-arid areas. Based on six flux towers located in northwestern China measuring the carbon fluxes in a maize (Zea mays L.) cropland, alpine meadow, wetland, swamp meadow, Tamarix, and gobi desert, this work revealed that all ecosystems sequestered CO2 at various magnitudes. The cropland had the highest carbon uptake, followed by the alpine meadow, swamp meadow, wetland and Tamarix, respectively. Distinct seasonal dynamics in carbon sequestration were observed across these ecosystems with the peak values in summertime, whereas the gobi desert exhibited as a weak carbon sink with considerable fluctuations around the year. In this water-limited region, soil water content instead of rainfall, is expected to be the primary environmental control on the land–atmosphere carbon fluxes, and regarded as a key linkage between hydrologic and ecologic processes. Therefore, not only the appropriate vegetation types, but also the water availability controlled by the local climatic constraints and soil characteristics, should be addressed in order to identify management strategies for ecological restoration in the dry areas.

Fuel moisture limits the availability of fuel to wildfires in many forest areas worldwide, but the effects of climate change on moisture constraints remain largely unknown. Here we addressed how climate affects fuel moisture in pine stands from Catalonia, NE Spain, and the potential effects of increasing climate aridity on burned area in the Pyrenees, a mesic mountainous area where fire is currently rare. We first quantified variation in fuel moisture in six sites distributed across an altitudinal gradient where the long-term mean annual temperature and precipitation vary by 6-15 °C and 395-933 mm, respectively. We observed significant spatial variation in live (78-162%) and dead (10-15%) fuel moisture across sites. The pattern of variation was negatively linked (r = |0.6|-|0.9|) to increases in vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and in the Aridity Index. Using seasonal fire records over 2006-2020, we observed that summer burned area in the Mediterranean forests of Northeast Spain and Southern France was strongly dependent on VPD (r = 0.93), the major driver (and predictor) of dead fuel moisture content (DFMC) at our sites. Based on the difference between VPD thresholds associated with large wildfire seasons in the Mediterranean (3.6 kPa) and the maximum VPD observed in surrounding Pyrenean mountains (3.1 kPa), we quantified the "safety margin" for Pyrenean forests (difference between actual VPD and that associated with large wildfires) at 0.5 kPa. The effects of live fuel moisture content (LFMC) on burned area were not significant under current conditions, a situation that may change with projected increases in climate aridity. Overall, our results indicate that DFMC in currently fire-free areas in Europe, like the Pyrenees, with vast amounts of fuel in many forest stands, may reach critical dryness thresholds beyond the safety margin and experience large wildfires after only mild increases in VPD, although LFMC can modulate the response.

The concept of water footprint (WF) has been used to manage freshwater resources for the past two decades and is considered as indicator of the sustainability of agricultural systems. Accordingly, the current study aimed to quantify WF and its components in the future climate for rainfed and irrigated wheat agro-ecosystems in 17 provinces of Iran located in arid or semi-arid environments. The provinces were divided into five climate classes. The simulations were conducted under current (1980–2010) and future climate (2040–2070) using the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) crop model, following the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) protocol. Baseline simulations indicated that the total WF, averaged across all climate classes, was 1148 m3 t−1 for irrigated and 1155 m3 t−1 for rainfed wheat. WF was projected to decline in the future compared to baseline in both irrigated and rainfed systems mostly because of increases in yield of +9% in rainfed systems and 3.5% in irrigated systems, and decreases in water consumption by −5.4% and −10.1%, respectively. However, the share of gray water footprint (WFgray) was projected to increase in the near future for both rainfed (+5.4%) and irrigated (+6.9%) systems. These findings suggest that cleaner and more sustainable production (i.e. obtaining grain yield under optimal water and nitrogen consumption) could be achieved in irrigated and rainfed wheat ago-ecosystems if optimal N fertilizer management is adopted. Additionally, rainfed cultivation can be further expanded in some areas which is expected to result in a substantial reduction in blue water (i.e. less irrigation), especially in sub-humid and semi-arid cool areas.

International audience; The intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) predicts significant changes in precipitation patterns, an increase in temperature, and groundwater level variations by 2100. These changes are expected to alter light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) impacts since groundwater level fluctuations and temperature are known to influence both the mobility and release of LNAPL compounds to air and groundwater. Knowledge of these potential effects is currently dispersed in the literature, hindering a clear vision of the processes at play. This review aims to synthesize and discuss the possible effects of the increase in temperature and groundwater level fluctuations on the behavior of LNAPL and its components in a climate change context. In summary, a higher amplitude of groundwater table variations and higher temperatures will probably increase biodegradation processes, the LNAPL mobility, and spreading across the smear zone, favoring the release of LNAPL compounds to the atmosphere and groundwater but decreasing the LNAPL mass and its longevity. Outcomes will, nevertheless, vary greatly across arid, cold, or humid coastal environments, where different effects of climate change are expected. The effects of the climate change factors linked to soil heterogeneities, local conditions, and weathering processes will govern LNAPL behavior and need to be further clarified.

Climate change and anthropogenic perturbation threaten resilience of wetlands globally, particularly in regions where environmental conditions are already hot and dry, and human impacts are rapidly intensifying and expanding. Here we assess the vulnerability of Ramsar wetlands of six North African countries (Western Sahara, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt) by asking three questions: (1) what are the recent anthropogenic changes that the wetlands experienced? (2) what are the projected future climatic changes? (3) how wetlands with different conservation priorities and globally threatened species are impacted by anthropogenic pressures? We used climatic data (historical and future projections) from WorldClim 2, drought index (SPEI), and human footprint index (HFI for 2000 and 2019) to estimate anthropogenic pressures, as well as waterbird conservation value (WCV: a metric indicating conservation priority of sites) and the breeding distribution of three threatened waterbird species (Aythya nyroca, Marmaronetta angustirostris, and Oxyura leucocephala) to understand how biodiversity is impacted by anthropogenic pressure. We found that temperature, precipitation, drought, and human footprint index (HFI) increased during earlier decades. Interestingly, areas with high HFI are projected to encounter lower warming but more severe drought. We also found that WCV was positively correlated with the magnitude of current HFI, indicating that sites of high conservation value for waterbirds encounter higher levels of anthropogenic pressure. The breeding range of the three threatened species of waterbirds showed a marked increase in HFI and is projected to experience a severe increase in temperature by 2081-2100, especially under the high emission scenario (SSP8.5) where environmental temperature becomes closer to the species critical maximum. Our results highlight the importance of integrating new conservation measures that increase the resilience of North African protected wetlands to reduce extinction risk to biodiversity.

The vertical distribution of atmospheric aerosols plays an essential role in aerosol–radiation and aerosol–cloud interactions. Because of strong light absorption, the radiative effects of black carbon (BC) are highly sensitive to its vertical distribution; the lack of high-resolution observations is the reason for their poor quantification. We used a tethered balloon platform to acquire high-resolution vertical profiles of BC, particle number concentration, and meteorological parameters in the semi-arid region of Northwest China in December 2018. A total of 112 BC profiles were classified into four vertical distribution categories, which were determined by local emissions, regional transport, vertical mixing due to the ABL evolution, and topography. BC profiles with peaks near or above the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) accounted for 57% of the profiles. Vertical single scattering albedo (SSA) profiles were subsequently calculated using the profiles of BC and particle size distribution. The vertical SSA distribution is generally modulated by BC profiles. The diurnal variations of the BC and SSA profiles were summarized using a boundary-layer normalization method. In the ABL, BC decreased and SSA increased with increasing height at 02:00, 08:00, and 20:00, while both BC and SSA exhibited a uniform distribution at 14:00. The SSA decreased above the ABL at 14:00, which might have had a profound impact on ABL development. These results provide a better understanding of the vertical BC and SSA distributions, which can also be used to reduce uncertainties in estimating the BC radiative effects.

Water and salt stress often occur simultaneously in heavily irrigated arid agricultural areas, yet they are usually studied in isolation. To understand the physiological bases of water use efficiency (WUE) of field-grown maize (Zea mays) at multi-scales under combined water and salt stress, we investigated the joint effects of water and salt stress on physiology, growth, yield, and WUE of two genotypes (XY335 and ZD958). We measured leaf stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthesis rate (A) and hydraulic traits, whole-plant growth and water use (ET), and final biomass and grain yield. Leaf osmotic adjustment was a key trait of the physiological differences between XY335 and ZD958 under water and salt stress. Although the responses of the two genotypes were different, mild water and salt stress improved intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE = A/gs) by (i) decreasing gs via increasing osmotic adjustment and hydraulic resistance, and (ii) declining A via increasing stomatal limitations rather than reducing photosynthetic capacity. Joint water and salt stress had a synergistic effect on reproductive growth and grain formation of maize. Mild water and salt stress reduced ET, stabilized grain yield, and improved grain WUE via declining gs, maintaining photosynthetic capacity, and improving harvest index. Collectively, our study provides a novel insight into the physiological mechanisms of WUE and demonstrates an approach for the efficient management of water and salt by using a growth stage-based deficit irrigation strategy or/and selecting genotypes with strong osmotic adjustment capacity and high harvest index.

The surface operations area of an underground coal mine near Lingwu in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was selected for this study. Particulate matter (PM) was sampled in the coal screening plant during the day and night in Spring and Winter, 2019. Twelve trace metals and eight water-soluble ions in particulate matter up to 10 μm in diameter (PM10) and total suspended particles (TSP) were analyzed using ICP-OES and ion chromatography, respectively. The enrichment factor (EF) and positive matrix fraction (PMF) were used to identify potential sources of particulate metals. The forward trajectory model was used to analyze the main migration pathways of particles. Results showed that higher concentrations of PM10 and TSP were found in Spring than in Winter; the concentration of PM at night was lower than during the day. Most of the trace metals in TSP were greater than in PM10, while the content of most water-soluble ions in TSP was lower than in PM10. The EF analysis confirmed that particulate metals were attributable to anthropogenic emission. PMF model results further demonstrated that the main sources of PM in both seasons were regional suspended dust, traffic emission, industrial emission and coal burning. Air mass dispersion analysis showed that PM generated by these operations may spread to eastern and southeastern China within 72 h in Spring, while mainly to southeastern and southern China in Winter. These suggest a need for greater focus on strengthening the monitoring and early warning of the presence of atmospheric PM in southern Shanxi, China. Because of the risks that particulate metals pose to human health, the protection of children should be strengthened around the surface operation area of an underground coal mine. Moreover, monitoring of the concentrations of Cr in PM10 and Mn in TSP in Spring should be strengthened, and the opposite procedure should be adopted in Winter. These findings are useful for providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of pollutants in underground mining areas and the construction of cleaner production lines.

In the arid area of northern Chile, groundwater resources in the Andean formations are essential for native populations, ecological services, mining, and other human activities. Validated conceptual hydrogeological models are required for current and future water and land management. This work aims to explain the processes controlling the origin and distribution of recharge and groundwater composition in the Andean Precordillera and Altiplano of the Tarapaca Region of northern Chile, using major solutes in spring, river, and well water, and the stable and radioactive isotopes of water oxygen, hydrogen, and dissolved inorganic carbon. The waters are mainly of the Na-Ca-SO4 type. Processes controlling the chemical evolution of waters are atmospheric dust contribution, evapo-concentration, and enhanced volcanic rock weathering, as well as halite dissolution in some locations. The isotopic composition of Precordillera eastern flank water samples follows an evaporation line, while those in the western flank, in the Altiplano, follow a line that is parallel to the local meteoric line, suggesting unsaturated zone evaporation processes of infiltrated rainfall. δ13CDIC contents (-2 to -27‰) indicate mixing processes, volcanic CO2 in the Altiplano, and calcite dissolution in some sectors. In the western depression, the only recharge is due to water infiltration in creek channels. In the highland areas, 5–25% of precipitation produces recharge. The estimated groundwater renewal time in the Precordillera was 3–14 kyr. The piezometric elevation in the Precordillera due to low-permeability intrusive rocks and local recharge prevents the east-west groundwater transfer from the Altiplano to the western depression and explains why the volcanic CO2 in the Altiplano basins is not observed on the western flank. These results provide new insights for the evolution of water quality in volcanic aquifers in arid environments and provide considerations for estimating groundwater residence times using radiocarbon in areas influenced by volcanic CO2.

Access to clean drinking water has been acknowledged as a human right and assessing the hydrogeochemistry and groundwater quality status plays an important role in proving cleaner and safer water for human consumption. This study evaluated the sources and driving factors of the groundwater facies in the five major river basins (viz. Ajay, Mayurakshi, Kopai, Brahmani and Dwarka) of an agroeconomic semi-arid Indian tract through hydrogeochemical and principal component analyses based on 2200 groundwater samples (Ns = 2200) obtained during the pre- and post-monsoon cycles from 1100 wells (Nw = 1100). The results revealed that minerals weathering, ion/reverse ion exchange, mixing and evaporation processes along with anthropogenic inputs are responsible for the deteriorated groundwater quality of the river basins. The study has considered the cokriging approach that uses geostatistical and multivariate statistical techniques to interpolate a dataset. To determine the spatio-seasonal variabilities of the groundwater facies more accurately, the estimation accuracies of different interpolation techniques viz. inverse distance weighting, kriging/cokriging and splines techniques were compared and kriging/cokriging was found to represent the variability more accurately. Shannon's entropy theory was employed to assess the groundwater quality of the river basins as it eliminates the subjective bias and inherent uncertainties of the groundwater systems. Groundwater in ~37.45-38.42% of the total area was moderate to extremely poor for human consumption where 10.40-12.14%, 9.09-12.40%, 21.18-22.35%, 15.20-19.93% and 6.48-8.80% samples from the Ajay (Nw = 175), Brahmani (Nw = 175), Dwarka (Nw = 180), Kopai (Nw = 350) and Mayurakshi (Nw = 220) river basins exhibited unfit to drink water quality. The sensitivity of the water quality model was analyzed to identify the influences of the individual parameters which revealed that the outcome does not depend solely on one parameter. The study recommends adaptation of the treatment techniques to ensure clean drinking water for the residents. Managed aquifer recharge techniques might also improve the groundwater quality in certain areas.

The Eurasian steppe is the largest steppe region in the world and is an important part of the global grassland ecosystem. The eastern Eurasian steppe has favorable hydrothermal conditions and has the highest productivity and the richest biodiversity. Located in the arid and semi-arid region, the eastern Eurasian steppe has experienced large-scale grassland degradation due to dramatic climate change and intensive human activities during the past 20 years. Hence, accurate estimation of aboveground biomass (AGB, gC m−2) and belowground biomass (BGB, gC m−2) is necessary. In this study, plenty of AGB and BGB in-situ measurements were collected among dominated grassland types during summer in 2013 and 2016–2018 in the eastern Eurasian steppe. Vegetation indices from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and climate variables were chosen as independent variables to establish predictive models for AGB and BGB with random forest (RF). Both AGB (R2 = 0.47, MAE = 21.06 gC m−2, and RMSE = 27.52 gC m−2) and BGB (R2 = 0.44, MAE = 173.02 gC m−2, and RMSE = 244.20 gC m−2) models showed acceptable accuracy. Then the RF models were applied to generate spatially explicit AGB and BGB estimates for the study area over the last two decades (2000–2018). Both AGB and BGB showed higher values in the Greater Khingan Mountains and decreased gradually to the east and west sides. The mean values for AGB and BGB were 62.16 gC m−2 and 531.35 gC m−2, respectively. The climatic factors were much more important in controlling biomass than anthropogenic drivers, and shortage of water and raising temperature were the main limiting factor of AGB and BGB, respectively, in the peak growth season. These findings provide scientific data for the scientific management of animal husbandry and can contribute to the sustainable development of grassland ecology in the eastern Eurasian steppe.

Surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) are present in all cities, derived from their thermal properties. While looking at the spatiotemporal variability of land surface temperature (LST), there is still a gap in understanding patterns of change. In this paper, we analysed diurnal and nocturnal annual mean LST trends in continental (Beijing), temperate (Mexico City and Santiago), and arid (Cairo, Hyderabad, and Riyadh) cities employing 1 km MODIS data (2003–2019). Each time-series was assessed with the structure of a space-time cube. Hot and cold spots were detected for each year and the LST trends were analysed. Each pixel was classified into different space-time LST trends and their SUHIs were estimated. Cities exhibit trends of increasing temperatures in cold and hot spots for diurnal and nocturnal data. Temperatures are increasing faster in hot spots for diurnal and in cold spots for nocturnal scenes. Steady hot spots and warming hot spots exhibit the highest SUHIs for day and night. Our approach provides a framework to empirically delineate the spatial intraurban heterogeneity of LST patterns over time. This spatially explicit information provides insights into urban areas requiring heat mitigation strategies and can be used to monitor the performance of measures already implemented for climate adaptation.

Ecosystems in the arid/humid transition zone (AHTZ) of northern China are highly sensitive to climate change and human activities. Accurately assessing the impact of climate change on these ecosystems is important for effectively reducing the risks faced by them under future climate change. In this study, the leaf area index during the selected growing season (LAIGS) was used as an indicator for vegetation activity. After comparison different potential indicators, the growing season temperature (TGS) was used to indicate temperature, and the growing season aridity index (AIGS), which considers the regional water budget, was used to indicate moisture rather than precipitation, which is used more commonly. Correlation analysis and residual trends were used to study the influence of climatic and non-climatic factors on vegetation activity in the AHTZ from 1982 to 2016. The results for regions where LAIGS increased significantly (0.037/10 yr, 53.58% of the study area), the regions where LAIGS dominated by non-climatic factors (18.40%) was larger than areas dominated by climatic factors (9.61%). However, most (25.57%) of the regions in the selected study area were mainly driven by both climatic and non-climatic factors. In about half (49.73%) of the climate-affected regions, significant changes in LAIGS were driven jointly by TGS and AIGS. These regions were mainly in the northern and western Loess Plateau. The regions where changes were driven mainly by AIGS, and those where changes were driven mainly by TGS, each accounted for nearly a quarter of climate-affected regions (24.87% and 25.40%, respectively). The former regions were on the western Songliao Plain, the northern North China Plain, and the northern Loess Plateau, and the latter regions were in the northern Greater Khingan Mountains, on the southern North China Plain, in the western mountains of North China, and on the southern Loess Plateau.

Management of water resources in hyper-arid areas faces vital challenges in a global climate change context. Consequently, understanding the effects on groundwater sources can help mitigating the problem of water scarcity and the negative impact of human intervention on the environment. A case study area in the hyper-arid climate of the United Arab Emirates, was tackled here with the focus on applying stable isotopes as tools for evaluating groundwater sources and quality assessment. The results of major ions indicate variable increase in groundwater salinity moving away from Al Hajar Mountains recharge areas to the discharge areas (Arabian Gulf coast). The data of stable isotopes (δ18OH2O, δ2HH2O, δ18ONO3, δ15NNO3, δ18OSO4, δ34SSO4, δ11B) suggest impact of paleo-groundwater in the abstractions of the wells nearest to the coast. Nitrate isotopes indicate farming activities sources that can be masked due to the contribution from the nitrate-poor paleo-groundwater. Nitrate reduction processes are expected near to the recharge front. Sulphate and boron isotopes further suggest that influence of ancient evaporite dissolution in salinization. Management efforts should be focused on the diffuse sources of quality mitigations that can be vital in fingerprinting local and regional (transboundary) effects.

The rising temperatures, increased evaporation, and altered precipitation patterns associated with global warming pose threats to aquatic ecosystems, especially the salinization of lake water and changes in the terrestrial carbon budget. We studied a series of samples of catchment soils, surface sediments, and sediment cores from 51 lakes and reservoirs covering an extensive climatic range in northeastern China. Measurements included salinity indices (electrical conductivity and pH) and other physicochemical parameters, including magnetic properties and color (chroma). The results indicate that the occurrence of salt minerals and the salinity of the lake sediments are dominated by the arid climatic conditions of the region. This enabled us to develop climatic transfer functions between salinity, precipitation and evaporation, with potential applications in paleoclimatic research. As carbonates are the dominant salts in most of the studied lakes and reservoirs, past salinity variations are likely reflected by changes in HCO3- and CO32- concentrations, which provides the opportunity to study the response of water-CO2-carbonate interactions to climate change. Our findings emphasize the important role of alkaline lakes in carbon burial and carbon neutralization, in the context of ongoing global warming.

Arid zones contain a diverse set of microbes capable of survival under dry conditions, some of which can form relationships with plants under drought stress conditions to improve plant health. We studied squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) root microbiome under historically arid and humid sites, both in situ and performing a common garden experiment. Plants were grown in soils from sites with different drought levels, using in situ collected soils as the microbial source. We described and analyzed bacterial diversity by 16S rRNA gene sequencing (N=48) from the soil, rhizosphere, and endosphere. Proteobacteria were the most abundant phylum present in humid and arid samples, while Actinobacteriota abundance was higher in arid ones. The Beta-diversity analyses showed split microbiomes between arid and humid microbiomes, and aridity and soil pH levels could explain it. These differences between humid and arid microbiomes were maintained in the common garden experiment, showing that it is possible to transplant in situ diversity to the greenhouse. We detected a total of 1009 bacterial genera; 199 exclusively associated with roots under arid conditions. With shotgun metagenomic sequencing of rhizospheres (N=6), we identified 2969 protein families in the squash core metagenome and found an increased number of exclusively protein families from arid (924) than humid samples (158). We found arid conditions enriched genes involved in protein degradation and folding, oxidative stress, compatible solute synthesis, and ion pumps associated with osmotic regulation. Plant phenotyping allowed us to correlate bacterial communities with plant growth.
