Microplastics are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems worldwide, but knowledge on their impacts on phytoplankton, especially freshwater microalgae, is still limited. To investigate this issue, microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was exposed to polystyrene (PS) microplastics with 4 concentration gradients (5, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L), and the growth, chlorophyll a fluorescence, photosynthetic activities (Fv/Fm), the contents of malondialdehydes (MDA), soluble proteins, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and settlement rate were accordingly measured. Results showed that the density of microalgae decreased as the increase of PS microplastics concentrations, and the highest inhibitory rate (IR) was 45.8% on the 7th day under the concentration of 100 mg/L. The high concentration (100 mg/L) of microplastics evidently inhibited the content of EPS released by microalgae into the solution. PS under all dosages tested could reduce both the chlorophyll a fluorescence yields and photosynthetic activities. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images demonstrated that microplastic beads were wrapped on the surface of microalgae and damaged their membranes, which could suggest the reduction of photosynthetic activities and the increase of soluble proteins and MDA content. The results also showed that PS microplastics could inhibit the settlement of microalgae at the later stage, which also indicated the recovery of microalgae from the toxic environment. Our findings will contribute to understanding the effects of microplastics on freshwater microalgae, as well as evaluating the possible influences of microplastics on aquatic ecosystems. The rapid development of ports in China over the last two decades has had inevitable consequences on the ambient air quality in coastal areas and harbors. For mitigation strategies and monitoring aims, the contributions of ship emissions should be identified, especially in these specific areas. Therefore, in this study, fine particulate matters (PM 2.5 ) samples were collected at Yangshan Harbor in 2016 to characterize ship emissions and estimate their impacts on the ambient air. The results showed that the average annual PM 2.5 concentration was 44.02 μg/m 3 at Yangshan Harbor. The mean seasonal PM 2.5 concentrations reached a maximum in the spring (60.28 μg/m 3 ) and a minimum in the summer (28.04 μg/m 3 ). Two methods were used in this study to estimate the contributions of ship emissions to the ambient air. When a V-based method was used, the primary estimated daily contributions of ship emissions to the ambient air at Yangshan Harbor ranged from 0.02 to 0.73 μg/m 3 with an annual average of 0.10 μg/m 3 . When a PMF-based method was used, the contributions ranged from 0.02 to 9.15 μg/m 3 with an annual average of 1.02 μg/m 3 . In fact, there was a significant underestimation of the true influences of ship emissions when only the primary contribution was considered. Using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) is a recently developed alternative method of rapidly evaluating the bioavailability of metals in soil. However, the method has found only limited application in systematic assessment of the bioavailability of cadmium (Cd) in red limestone paddy soils treated with different soil amendments. Of the four methods compared for estimating Cd content of rice grains from plants grown in such soils of central China treated with eleven different soil amendments in pot culture, Cd content of DGT-labile soil was significantly correlated to Cd concentrations in brown rice (R = 0.447, p < 0.01). The other three methods involved CaCl 2 , diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), or NH 4 NO 3. Some other properties of soil, such as pH, redox potential, content of dissolved organic matter, and cation exchange capacity were also determined. A simple algorithm developed to evaluate the sensitivity of the four methods also confirmed DGT as the most efficient method to predict the bioavailability of Cd in red limestone paddy soils. This work systematically studied the role of pre-coagulation in the performance of ultralow pressure membrane system for algae-laden water treatment. The membrane performance with/without pre-coagulation was compared in terms of membrane permeate flux, water quality and membrane fouling. Ultralow pressure membrane system can effectively reduce TOC of Microcystis aeruginosa -laden water from 5.8 to 2.1 mg/L, and pre-coagulation removed most large inorganic particles but few small organic particles. Interestingly, pre-coagulation aggravated the fouling of ultralow membrane system which is generally acknowledged method to alleviate the ultrafiltration membrane fouling. According to Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory (XDLVO), the interaction energy of membrane-foulants (ΔG fm TOT = − 41.95 mJ/m2), and foulant-foulant (ΔG ff TOT = − 30.15 mJ/m2) with coagulation were higher than those without coagulation (ΔG fm TOT = − 36.54 mJ/m2) and (ΔG ff TOT = − 15.73 mJ/m2) suggesting greater adherence between membrane and foulants & foulant and foulant after coagulation, which well agreed with SEM results. Membrane fouling models were also applied to analyze the fouling mechanism of ultralow-pressure membrane filtration. Based on above analysis, the possible fouling mechanisms for membrane filtration with/without precoagulation were proposed and then confirmed by pre-filtration experiment, where large inorganic particles played important roles. Our study could be indicative for membrane fouling control of ultralow-pressure membrane filtration for the treatment of algae-laden water.
