The Paraná basin is the second largest river basin in South America and provides abundant water resources globally. However, current research lacks hydrological investigation of the region. The vertical crustal deformation recorded by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) can be used to accurately estimate regional-scale terrestrial water storage (TWS). Therefore, we utilized the daily vertical displacement time series data at 102 GNSS stations to recover the water storage variations in the Paraná basin from 2013 to 2020. To recognize primary spatiotemporal features of TWS changes, we applied the principal component analysis (PCA) method in the inversion strategy. Results indicate that the TWS variations inferred from GNSS generally align in spatiotemporal patterns with estimates from both the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). However, some discrepancies are evident at local scales. The TWS changes derived from both GNSS and GRACE exhibited generally larger magnitude of oscillations than those estimated by GLDAS, while the GRACE results neglected the evident seasonal oscillation of the water mass in the southeast of the basin. Given the challenge of capturing large-scale runoff variations through in-situ observations, we innovatively applied GNSS and water budget closure method to provide a novel runoff estimate for the Paraná basin. The GNSS-inferred runoff exhibited a strong correlation (correlation coefficient of 0.72) with in-situ observations. Overall, our study fills the critical knowledge gap in geodesy-based hydrological investigation in the Paraná basin. Though recombinant strains are increasingly recognized for their potential in heavy metal remediation, few studies have evaluated their safety. Moreover, biosafety assessments of fecal-oral pathway exposure at country as well as global level have seldom analyzed the health risks of exposure to microorganisms from a microscopic perspective. The present study aimed to predict the long-term toxic effects of recombinant strains by conducting a subacute toxicity test on the chromium-removal recombinant strain 3458 and analyzing the gut microbiome. The available disinfection methods were also evaluated. The results showed that strain 3458 induced liver damage and affected renal function and lipid metabolism at 1.0 × 10 11  CFU/mL, which may be induced by its carrier strain, pET-28a. Strain 3458 poses the risk of increasing the number of pathogenic bacteria under prolonged exposure. When 500 mg L -1 chlorine-containing disinfectant or 250 mg L -1 chlorine dioxide disinfectant was added for 30 min, the sterilization rate exceeded 99.9 %. These findings suggest that existing wastewater disinfection methods can effectively sterilize strain 3458, ensuring its application value. Urbanization has led to increasing use of artificial light at night (ALAN), which has rapidly become an important source of pollution in many cities. To identify the ALAN effects on the embryonic development of the Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai, we first exposed larvae to natural light with a light period of 12 L:12D (control, Group CTR). We then exposed larvae to three different light regimes. Larvae in Group NL were exposed to full spectrum artificial light from 18:00 to 00:00 to simulate the lighting condition at night, whereas Groups BL and YL were illuminated at the same time interval with 450 nm of short-wavelength blue light and 560 nm of long-wavelength orange light, respectively, to simulate billboard lighting at night. There were significantly higher hatching success and metamorphosis rates of larvae in Group BL than in Group YL or CTR (P < 0.05). The larvae in Group YL had the highest abnormality rate and took the longest time to complete metamorphosis. Transcriptomic studies revealed significantly higher expression levels of genes related to RNA transport, DNA replication, and protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum pathways in Group BL compared to the other groups. In the metabolomic analysis, we identified prostaglandin B1, tyramine, d-fructose 6-phosphate, L-adrenaline, leukotriene C4, and arachidonic acid as differential metabolic markers, as they play a vital part in helping larvae adapt to different ALAN conditions. Multi-omics correlation analysis of pairwise comparisons between all of the groups suggested that the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids (FAs) and arachidonic acid metabolism pathways were significantly enriched (P < 0.05). Further quantitative analysis of the fatty acid (FA) contents revealed that 42 out of 50 FAs were down-regulated in Group BL and up-regulated in Group YL, which suggested that the synthesis, catabolism, and metabolism of FAs are crucial for the larval response to different spectral components of ALAN. For the first time, we report positive rather than negative effects of artificial blue light at night on the embryonic development of a benthic marine species. Emissions are essential for forecasting air quality and pollution control, but traditional emissions are often not real-time by the statistics of "bottom-up" approach due to high human resource demand. The four-dimensional variational method (4DVAR) and the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) are generally used to optimize emissions based on chemical transport models by assimilating observations. Although the two methods solve similar estimation problems, different functions have been developed to address the process of converting the emissions to concentrations. In this paper, we evaluated the performance of the 4DVAR and EnKF methods in optimizing SO 2 emissions over China during 23-29 January 2020. The emissions optimized by the 4DVAR and EnKF methods showed a similar spatiotemporal distribution in most regions of China during the study period, suggesting that both methods are useful in reducing uncertainties in the prior emissions. Three forecast experiments with different emissions were conducted. Compared with the forecasts with prior emissions, the root-mean-square error of the forecasts with the emissions optimized by the 4DVAR and EnKF methods decreased by 45.7 % and 40.4 %. This indicates that the 4DVAR method was slightly more effective than the EnKF method in optimizing emissions and improves the accuracy of forecasts. Furthermore, it is found that the 4DVAR method performed better than the EnKF method when the spatial and/or temporal distribution of SO 2 observations with strong local characteristics, The EnKF method showed a better performance for the condition of the large difference between prior emissions and real emissions. The results may help to design suitable assimilation algorithms for optimizing emissions and improving model forecasts. Global warming threatens aquatic systems and organisms. Many studies have focused on the vulnerability and stress responses of aquaculture organisms to future thermal conditions. However, it may be of more practical significance to reveal their acclimation potential and mechanisms. In this study, the physiological, metabolic, and transcriptional responses to long-term temperature acclimation of northern and southern populations of Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai, a commercially important gastropod sensitive to environmental changes, were compared. This study conducted two common-garden experiments, including a thermostatic experiment in the lab and an aquaculture experiment on the farm. The abalone population cultured in warmer southern waters was tolerant of ongoing high temperatures, whereas the abalone population originally cultured in cooler northern waters exhibited vulnerability to high temperatures but could enhance its thermal tolerance through the process of natural selection in warmer southern waters. This difference was linked to divergence in the metabolic and transcriptional processes of the two populations. The tolerant population exhibited a greater capacity for carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism regulation and energy redistribution to cope with heat stress. This capacity may have been selected for, and accumulated, over many generations because the tolerant population originated from the intolerant population over two decades ago. This work provides insight into the vulnerability and acclimation potential of abalone to heat stress and discloses the molecular and metabolic traits underlying this phenomenon. Ocean acidification (OA) resulting from the absorption of excess atmospheric CO 2 by the ocean threatens the survival of marine calcareous organisms, including mollusks. This study investigated the effects of OA on adults of two abalone species (Haliotis diversicolor, a subtropical species, and Haliotis discus hannai, a temperate species). Abalone were exposed to three pCO 2 conditions for 1 year (ambient, ~ 880, and ~ 1600 μatm), and parameters, including mortality, physiology, immune system, biochemistry, and carry-over effects, were measured. Survival decreased significantly at ~ 800 μatm pCO 2 for H. diversicolor, while H. discus hannai survival was negatively affected only at a higher OA level (~ 1600 μatm pCO 2 ). H. diversicolor exhibited depressed metabolic and excretion rates and a higher O:N ratio under OA, indicating a shift to lipids as a metabolism substrate, while these physiological parameters in H. discus hannai were robust to OA. Both abalone failed to compensate for the pH decrease of their internal fluids because of the lowered hemolymph pH under OA. However, the reduced hemolymph pH did not affect total hemocyte counts or tested biomarkers. Additionally, H. discus hannai increased its hemolymph protein content under OA, which could indicate enhanced immunity. Larvae produced by adults exposed to the three pCO 2 levels were cultured in the same pCO 2 conditions and larval deformation and shell length were measured to observe carry-over effects. Enhanced OA tolerance was observed for H. discus hannai exposed under both of the OA treatments, while that was only observed following parental pCO 2 ~ 880 μatm exposure for H. diversicolor. Following pCO 2 ~ 1600 μatm parental exposure, H. diversicolor offspring exhibited higher deformation and lower shell growth in all pCO 2 treatments. Soil moisture (SM) and groundwater (GW) depletion triggered by anthropogenic and natural climate change are influencing food security via crop production per capita decrease in the Nile River Basin (NRB). However, to the best of our understanding, the causes and impact of SM and GW depletion have not been studied yet comprehensively in the NRB. In this study, GW is derived from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, and SM was estimated using the Triple Collocation Analysis (TCA). SM/GW depletion causes were evaluated via the Land Use Land Cover (LULC) and rainfall/temperature change analysis, whereas impact analysis focused on crop production per capita reduction (food insecurity) during SM depletion. The major findings of this study are 1) TCA analyzed SM show a decreasing trend (-0.06 mm/yr) in agricultural land while increasing (+0.21 mm/yr) in forest land, 2) LULC analysis indicated a vast increment of agricultural land (+9%) and bareland (+9%) although the decreasing pattern of forest (-1.5%) and shrubland (-6.9%) during 1990-2019; 3) the impact of SM depletion on crop production per capita caused food insecurity during a drought year, 4) agriculture drought indices and crop production per capita show high correlations (R 2 = 0.86 to 0.60) demonstrated that Vegetation Supply Water Index (VSWI) could provide strategic warning of drought impacts on rainfed agricultural regions. In conclusion, SM and GW depletions are mainly caused by human-induced and climate change factors imposing food insecurity challenges in the NRB coupled with increasing temperature and excessive water extraction for irrigation. Uranium (U) pollution is an environmental hazard caused by the development of the nuclear industry. Microbial reduction of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) to tetravalent uranium (U(IV)) reduces U solubility and mobility and has been proposed as an effective method to remediate uranium contamination. In this review, U(VI) remediation with respect to U(VI)-reducing bacteria, mechanisms, influencing factors, products, and reoxidation are systematically summarized. Reportedly, some metal- and sulfate-reducing bacteria possess excellent U(VI) reduction capability through mechanisms involving c-type cytochromes, extracellular pili, electron shuttle, or thioredoxin reduction. In situ remediation has been demonstrated as an ideal strategy for large-scale degradation of uranium contaminants than ex situ. However, U(VI) reduction efficiency can be affected by various factors, including pH, temperature, bicarbonate, electron donors, and coexisting metal ions. Due to anthropogenic activities that have increased global climate change and nutrient discharges, severe hypoxic events have frequently occurred in coastal waters in recent years. Relying on coastal waters, the aquaculture area has suffered ecological and economic losses caused by hypoxia, especially in summer. In this study, to investigate the stress resistance of the Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai (DD) and the hybrid H. discus hannai ♀ × H. fulgens ♂ (DF), a combination of physiological, biochemical, and metabolomic methods were used to compare the metabolic responses of these two abalones to acute hypoxia (~0.5 mg O 2 /L, 12 h) and reoxygenation (~6.6 mg O 2 /L, 10-20 h). Hemolymph characteristics and aerobic/anaerobic respiratory capacity changed significantly under hypoxia or reoxygenation conditions, and they were regulated in different trends in two abalones. The contents of hepatopancreas glycogen in two abalones reached the trough after 10 h recovery, implying that short-term hypoxia leads to a long-lasting (several hours) imprint on the energy storage of abalone. In response to dissolved oxygen fluctuation, metabolic profiles of two abalones changed in distinct ways both in the hypoxia group or the reoxygenation group. The conversion of carbohydrate metabolism and amino acid metabolism indicated that hypoxia prompts abalone to change the way of energy metabolism, which may also reflect the difference in the energy utilization of DD and DF abalones. In addition, 3 metabolites (L-glutamate, 2-hydroxy-butanoic acid, and 2-methyl-3-hydroxybutyric acid) as potential biomarkers for hypoxia and reoxygenation response in abalone were determined by operating characteristic analysis (ROC). In this study, we reported a practice at northern Hangzhou Bay, southeast China aimed at restoring coastal wetlands within the intertidal zone outside of the seawalls. The principle idea is protecting the site and helping the marsh establishment by engineering measures, and thereafter, relieving the protections to encourage the self-organization of the restored ecosystem. The results of this implementation showed the marsh reached an average vegetation cover of 70% in the first year. The excess nitrogen was removed by an ecological recirculating treatment system, which was coupled in the wetland. The long-term performance of the wetland suggested that it could resist disturbances such as hurricanes and algal blooms, and provided clean water habitat for aquatic fauna. Photosynthetic organisms need to respond frequently to the fluctuation of light quality and light quantity in their habitat. In response to the fluctuation of different single wavelength lights, these organisms have to adjust and optimize the employment of light energy by redistributing excitation energy and remodeling photosystem stoichiometry or light complex structure. However, the response of whole cellular processes to fluctuations in single wavelength light is mostly unknown. Here, we report the transcriptomic and proteomic dynamics and metabolic adaptation mechanisms of Nannochloropsis oceanica to blue and red light. Preferential exposure to different light spectra induces massive reprogramming of the Nannochloropsis transcriptome and proteome. Combined with physiological and biochemical investigation, the rewiring of many cellular processes was observed, including carbon/nitrogen assimilation, photosynthesis, chlorophyll and cartenoid biosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging systems, and chromatin state regulation. A strong and rapid regulation of genes or proteins related to nitrogen metabolism, photosynthesis, chlorophyll synthesis, ROS scavenging system, and carotenoid metabolism were observed during 12 h and 24 h of exposure under red light. Additionally, two light harvesting complex proteins induced by blue light and one by red light were observed. A three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) lidar data assimilation method is developed based on the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) and Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled to Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model. A 3DVAR data assimilation (DA) system using lidar extinction coefficient observation data is established, and variables from the Model for Simulating Aerosol Interactions and Chemistry (MOSAIC) mechanism of the WRF-Chem model are employed. Hourly lidar extinction coefficient data from 12:00 to 18:00 UTC on March 13, 2018 at four stations in Beijing are assimilated into the initial field of the WRF-Chem model; subsequently, a 24 h PM 2.5 concentration forecast is made. Results indicate that assimilating lidar data can effectively improve the subsequent forecast. PM 2.5 forecasts without using lidar DA are remarkably underestimated, particularly during heavy haze periods; in contrast, forecasts of PM 2.5 concentrations with lidar DA are closer to observations, the model low bias is evidently reduced, and the vertical distribution of the PM 2.5 concentration in Beijing is distinctly improved from the surface to 1200 m. Of the five aerosol species, improvements of NO 3 - are the most significant. The correlation coefficient between PM 2.5 concentration forecasts with lidar DA and observations at 12 stations in Beijing is increased by 0.45, and the corresponding average RMSE is decreased by 25 μg·m -3 , which respectively compared to those without DA., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) is widely used to predict surface PM 2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5μm) concentrations using regression methods, as a way to supplement observations from sparse ground PM 2.5 monitoring networks. Several meteorological parameters, such as surface humidity, temperature and height of planetary boundary layer (HPBL), are usually combined with AOD to improve the accuracy of the regression model in predicting PM 2.5 concentrations. In this paper, we investigate the role of the temperature inversion layer in the prediction of PM 2.5 concentrations by the optimal subset regression method. The result indicates that the optimal subset regression model with the parameters of the depth and temperature difference of the inversion can significantly improve the accuracy of the predictions of surface PM 2.5 concentrations, compared with the original regression model with one factor of AOD. The determination coefficient (R 2 ) increases from 0.51 to 0.63, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) decreases from 40.38 to 35.45μg/m 3 . The optimal subset regressions were also built for each season. The temperature difference of the inversion is introduced into the autumn and winter optimal subset regression, and the depth of the inversion is introduced into the spring optimal subset regression. Satellite measurements have been widely used to estimate particulate matter (PM) on the ground, which can affect human health adversely. However, such estimation from space is susceptible to meteorological conditions and may result in large errors. In this study, we compared the aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieved by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) to predict ground-level PM2.5 concentration in Xi'an, Shaanxi province of northwestern China, using an empirical nonlinear model. Meteorological parameters from ground-based measurements and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data were used as covariates in the model. Both MODIS and MISR AOD values were highly significant predictors of ground-level PM2.5 concentration. The MODIS and MISR models had overall comparable predictability of ground-level PM2.5 concentration and explained 67% and 72% of the daily PM2.5 concentration variation, respectively. Seasonal analysis showed that the MODIS and MISR models had overall comparable predictability of ground-level PM2.5 concentration, with the MISR model having a higher correlation coefficient (R) and thus giving a better fit in all seasons. The MISR model had high prediction accuracy in all seasons, with average R(2) and absolute percentage error (APE) of 0.84 and 15.3% in all four seasons, respectively. The prediction of the MODIS model was best during winter (R(2)=0.83) with an APE of 19%, whereas it was relatively poor in spring (R(2)=0.56) with an APE of 21%. Further analysis showed that there was a significant improvement in correlation coefficient when using the nonlinear multiple regression model compared to using a simple linear regression model of AOD and PM2.5.
