Terrestrial ecosystems have strong feedback to atmospheric CO 2 concentration and climate change. However, the long-term whole life cycle dynamics of ecosystem carbon (C) fluxes and overall balance in some ecosystem types, such as heathland ecosystems, have not been thoroughly explored. We studied the changes in ecosystem CO 2 flux components and overall C balance over a full ecosystem lifecycle in stands of Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull by using a chronosequence of 0, 12, 19 and 28 years after vegetation cutting. Overall, the ecosystem C balance was highly nonlinear over time and exhibited a sinusoidal-like curvature of C sink/source change over the three-decade timescale. After cutting, plant-related C flux components of gross photosynthesis (P G ) , aboveground autotrophic respiration (R aa ) and belowground autotrophic respiration (R ba ) were higher at the young age (12 years) than at middle (19 years) and old (28 years) ages. The young ecosystem was a C sink (12 years: -0.374 kg C m -2  year -1 ) while it became a C source with aging (19 years: 0.218 kg C m -2  year -1 ) and when dying (28 years: 0.089 kg C m -2  year -1 ). The post-cutting C compensation point was observed after four years, while the cumulative C loss in the period after cutting had been compensated by an equal amount of C uptake after seven years. Annual ecosystem C payback from the ecosystem to the atmosphere started after 16 years. This information may be used directly for optimizing vegetation management practices for maximal ecosystem C uptake capacity. High nitrogen (N) deposition levels, currently present in many industrial and agricultural regions of the world, can strongly affect the functioning of forest ecosystems. In a pine forest with strong N leaching, located in the Netherlands, we studied the long-term fate of a year-long NH 4 + deposition cohort labeled with 15 N. A high ambient and a low N deposition treatment had been established at the site by means of a roof and sprinklers. Resampling the N pools 19 years after labeling and 11 years after the last sampling, we found similar 15 N deltas in needles, twigs and the LF1 organic soil layer of each treatment, indicating intensive N cycling among these pools. In the last 11 years, label recovery decreased in these labile pools, while recovery remained constant in wood and increased in bark. Together these aboveground vegetation pools retained less than 3% of the labeled N. In the organic layers, label recovery after 19 years decreased to 23% in both treatments, while in the mineral soil it increased from 4% to 13% (high N) and from 3% to 29% (low N treatment). Within the mineral soil of the high N treatment the labeled N was mainly found in fine roots, while in the low N treatment most N was incorporated in the two soil density fractions, shifting to the high density fraction with depth. This suggests a low capacity of the mineral soil at high N deposition to incorporate N. After the labeled N had been lost substantially in previous years, especially in the first, its presence remained constant in the last 11 years at 38% (high N) and 54% (low N treatment). Most studies on glass eel (Anguilla anguilla) migration are performed in natural estuaries, where they enter freshwater systems to live there for a period of years before they swim back again to the sea to reproduce. In these natural systems, river flows play a major role in attracting and directing migrating eels. However, coastal areas get urbanized more and more and characterized by anthropogenic barriers and hampered or artificial water flows. The effects of these flows on glass eel migration are poorly understood. Therefore, in this study glass eel were sampled at water pumping stations in a constructed part of the Rhine delta in the Netherlands. A mixed linear-effect model was used to determine effects of freshwater flows from water pumping stations on glass eel catch. We found that freshwater flows from water pumping stations had a significant but small effect on glass eel catch. Pumping activity had no significant effect on glass eel catch at sample locations with a continuous freshwater flow from fish passages. However, a low predictive value of the model and low numbers of individuals per sample prohibited strong conclusions on effects of anthropogenic freshwater flows on glass eel migration.
