Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [ADD1_IRSTEA]Systèmes aquatiques soumis à des pressions multiples; International audience; Eutrophication is one of the most common causes of water quality impairment of inland and marine waters. Its best-known manifestations are toxic cyanobacteria blooms in lakes and waterways and proliferations of green macro algae in coastal areas. The term eutrophication is used by both the scientific community and public policy-makers, and therefore has a myriad of definitions. The introduction by the public authorities of regulations to limit eutrophication is a source of tension and debate on the activities identified as contributing or having contributed decisively to these phenomena. Debates on the identification of the driving factors and risk levels of eutrophication, seeking to guide public policies, have led the ministries in charge of the environment and agriculture to ask for a joint scientific appraisal to be conducted on the subject. Four French research institutes were mandated to produce a critical scientific analysis on the latest knowledge of the causes, mechanisms, consequences and predictability of eutrophication phenomena. This paper provides the methodology and the main findings of this two years exercise involving 40 scientific experts.

Abstract

International audience; Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) have been increasingly released in aquatic ecosystems over the past decades as they are used in many applications. Cu toxicity to different organisms has already been highlighted in the literature, however toxicity mechanisms of the nanoparticulate form remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effect, transfer and localization of CuO-NPs compared to Cu salt on the aquatic plant Myriophyllum spicatum, an ecotoxicological model species with a pivotal role in freshwater ecosystems, to establish a clear mode of action. Plants were exposed to 0.5 mg/L Cu salt, 5 and 70 mg/L CuO-NPs during 96 h and 10 days. Several morphological and physiological endpoints were measured. Cu salt was found more toxic than CuO-NPs to plants based on all the measured endpoints despite a similar internal Cu concentration demonstrated via Cu mapping by micro particle-induced X-ray emission (μPIXE) coupled to Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS). Biomacromolecule composition investigated by FTIR converged between 70 mg/L CuO-NPs and Cu salt treatments after 10 days. This demonstrates that the difference of toxicity comes from a sudden massive Cu$^{2+}$ addition from Cu salt similar to an acute exposure, versus a progressive leaching of Cu$^{2+}$ from CuO-NPs representing a chronic exposure. Understanding NP toxicity mechanisms can help in the future conception of safer by design NPs and thus diminishing their impact on both the environment and humans.

Abstract

Ecological interactions are rarely taken into account in environmental risk assessment. The objective of this work was to assess how interspecific competition affects the way plant species react to herbicides and more specifically how it modifies the concentration-response curves that can be built using ecotoxicological bioassays. To do this, we relied on the results of ecotoxicological bioassays on six herbaceous species exposed to isoproturon under two conditions: in presence and in absence of a competitor. At the end of the experiments, eleven endpoints were measured. We modelled these data using a hierarchical modelling framework designed to assess the effects of competition on each of the four parameters of the concentration response curves (e.g. the level of response at the control or the concentration at the inflection point of the curve) simultaneously for the six species. The modelled effects could be of three types, 1) competition had no effect on the parameter, 2) competition had the same effect on the parameter for all species and 3) competition had a different effect on the parameter for each species. Our main hypothesis was that different species would react differently to competition. Results showed that about a half of the estimated parameters showed a modification under competition pressure among which only a fourth showed a species-specific effect, the three other fourth showing the same effect between the different species. Our initial hypothesis was thus not supported as species tended to react in the same way to competition. The competition effect on plants was mainly negative, thus showing that they were more affected by isoproturon under competition pressure. This study therefore establishes how competition modifies plant responses to chemical stress and how this interaction varies from one species to the other.

Abstract

International audience; Metal contamination is one of the major issues to the environment worldwide, yet it is poorly known how exposure to metals affects tropical species. We assessed the sensitivity of a tropical micro-crustacean Daphnia lumholtzi to three trace metals: copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni). Both, acute and chronic toxicity tests were conducted with metals dissolved in in situ water collected from two sites in the lower part of the Mekong River. In the acute toxicity test, D. lumholtzi neonates were exposed to Cu (3-30 mu g L-1), Zn (50-540 mu g L-1) or Ni (46-2356 mu g L-1) for 48 h. The values of median lethal concentrations (48 h-LC50) were 11.57-16.67 mu g Cu L-1, 179.3-280.9 mu g Zn L-1, and 1026-1516 mu g Ni L-1. In the chronic toxicity test, animals were exposed to Cu (3 and 4 mu g L-1), Zn (50 and 56 mu g L-1), and Ni (six concentrations from 5 to 302 mu g L-1) for 21 days. The concentrations of 4 mu g Cu L-1 and 6 mu g Ni L-1 enhanced the body length of D. lumholtzi but 46 mu g Ni L-1 and 50 mu g Zn L-1 resulted in a strong mortality, reduced the body length, postponed the maturation, and lowered the fecundity. The results tentatively suggest that D. lumholtzi showed a higher sensitivity to metals than related species in the temperate region. The results underscore the importance of including the local species in ecological risk assessment in important tropical ecosystems such as the Mekong River to arrive at a better conservational and management plan and regulatory policy to protect freshwater biodiversity from metal contamination. Abstract

International audience; Herbicide impact is usually assessed as the result of a unilinear mode of action on a specific biochemical target with a typical dose-response dynamics. Recent developments in plant molecular signaling and crosstalk between nutritional, hormonal and environmental stress cues are however revealing a more complex picture of inclusive toxicity. Herbicides induce large-scale metabolic and gene-expression effects that go far beyond the expected consequences of unilinear herbicide-target-damage mechanisms. Moreover, groundbreaking studies have revealed that herbicide action and responses strongly interact with hormone signaling pathways, with numerous regulatory protein-kinases and -phosphatases, with metabolic and circadian clock regulators and with oxidative stress signaling pathways. These interactions are likely to result in mechanisms of adjustment that can determine the level of sensitivity or tolerance to a given herbicide or to a mixture of herbicides depending on the environmental and developmental status of the plant. Such regulations can be described as rheostatic and their importance is discussed in relation with herbicide use strategies, environmental risk assessment and global change assessment challenges. Abstract

International audience; Despite the importance of surface waters of permafrost landscapes in carbon (C) emission and dissolved C and metal storage and export, the majority of available observations in high latitude aquatic systems deal with punctual or seasonal sampling without accounting for diurnal variations in temperature and primary productivity-respiration cycles. Towards providing comprehensive understanding of diel variations in CO2 emission, organic C and element concentrations in lakes of frozen peatlands, we monitored, each 2 h over 2 days, the water temperature, pH, CO2 fluxes, CO2, CH4, dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC, respectively), nutrients, carboxylic acids, bacterial number, and major and trace elements in two acidic (pH = 3.6 and 4.0) and humic (DOC = 15 and 35 mg L−1) thermokarst lakes of discontinuous permafrost zone in Western Siberia. We discovered a factor of 2 to 3 higher CO2 concentrations and fluxes during the night compared to daytime in the high-DOC lake. The emission fluxes in the low-DOC lake increased from zero to negative values during the day to highly positive values during the end of night and early morning. The methane concentration varied within a factor of 5 without any link to the diurnal cycle. The bulk of dissolved (< 0.45 μm) hydrochemical parameters remained highly stable with ±10% variation in concentration over 2 days of observation (DOC, DIC, SUVA254nm, carboxylates (formate, oxalate, puryvate and glutarate), Mn, Fe, Al, other trace elements). Concentrations of Si, P, K, Cu varied within ±20% whereas those of Zn and Ni ranged by a factor of 2 to 4 without any link to diurnal pattern. Overall, the impact of diel cycle on CH4, DOC, nutrient and metal concentration was below 10%. However, neglecting night-time period may underestimate net CO2 emission by ca. 30 to 50% in small organic-rich thaw ponds and switch the CO2 exchange from uptake/zero to net emission in larger thermokarst lakes. Given the dominance of large lakes in permafrost regions, the global underestimation of the emission flux may be quite high. As such, monitoring CO2 concentrations and fluxes in thermokarst lakes during months of extended night time (August to October) is mandatory for assessing the net emissions from lentic waters of frozen peatlands.

Abstract

Ulva spp., the algae most responsible for green tides in Brittany (France), are found on the foreshore and in the most beachward wave area (MBWA) of many bays during green tide phenomena. These algae have recently been seen drifting at greater depths (reaching -20 m). In view of the significant quantities of algae found at these depths, and the less favorable conditions for algal growth than in the intertidal zone, we attempted to determine if they could grow there. For that, during their maximum growth period (from May to July), algae were picked up at three stations located on the foreshore, in the MBWA and in the subtidal (deep) zones of the Bay of Douarnenez, and their nitrogen, carbon and chlorophyll a+b contents were determined, and their photosynthetic activity was compared in the laboratory. The intracellular concentrations did not differ much from one station to another, although in the subtidal zone, the irradiance and the nitrogen concentration in the ambient water were much lower than those measured on the foreshore and in the MBWA. Photosynthetic activity characterized by maximum amounts of oxygen produced at different irradiances and by saturating and compensating irradiance levels, was also quite similar at the three stations. The irradiance, temperature and salinity of the subtidal environment, together with the chemical and photosynthetic characteristics of the algae found in that area, are consistent with the hypothesis that they grow there, and that their nitrogen supply comes from nitrogen releases from sediments. Abstract

International audience; The aim of this work was to study, by an in toto immunohistochemical technique, the expression pattern of the heat shock protein, Hsp70, in the widely used bioindicator species Cloeon dipterum (Linnaeus 1761) (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae), living in a motorway retention pond. All sampling and measurements have been performed from March 2002 to March 2003. The water physicochemical analyses have revealed a large increase in Na + and Cl − concentrations after the de-icing road surface in winter related to motorway maintenance that correspond to an osmotic shock (from 3.1 to 105.7 mg L − 1 for Na + and from 3.5 to 193.9 mg L − 1 for Cl −). An expression of Hsp70 was observed in the chloride cells only during the osmotic shock. In contrast, the gill insertions were Hsp70 immunoreactive in specimens collected all along the year. For comparison, the expression of Hsp70 was investigated in specimens collected in a temporary pond. C. dipterum larvae living in this pond, not submitted to such osmotic shock, do not express Hsp70 neither in chloride cells nor in gill insertions. Likewise, the expression of Hsp70 was not detected in these structures during the drying period when the abiotic conditions become progressively stressful (elevation of temperature and anoxia). As chloride cells play a key role in osmoregulation, their functional integrity is crucial for the survival of the mayfly larvae in occasionally salty freshwaters. According to the well known protective role of the Hsp70 stress proteins, it is likely that the induction of Hsp70 may protect the chloride cells from osmotic shock injuries resulting from the increase in salinity. So, the Hsp70 induction in chloride cells is designed as a useful biomarker of osmotic shock. The in toto immunohistochemical detection of Hsp70 allows to characterize both the exposure situation and biological effects in target cells induced by stresses. This method could be used as a complementary qualitative approach in the biomarker actual concept. Finally, this investigation that combines this osmotic shock biomarker and this kind of bioindicator species would be a helpful tool for the monitoring of freshwater ecological systems.

Abstract

International audience; For centuries, many Mediterranean catchments were covered with vineyards in which copper was widely applied to protect grapevines against fungus. In the Mediterranean-type flow regime, brief and intense flood events increase the stream water discharge by up to 10 times and cause soil leaching and storm runoff. Because vineyards are primarily cultivated on steep slopes, high Cu fluxes are discharged by surface water runoff into the rivers. The purpose of this work was to investigate the riverine behavior and transport of anthropogenic Cu by coupling a sequential chemical extraction (SCE) procedure, used to determine Cu partitioning between residual and non-residual fractions, with δ65Cu isotopic measurements in each fraction. In the Baillaury catchment, France, we sampled soils (cultivated and abandoned), river bed sediments (BS), suspended particulate matter (SPM), and river water during the flash flood event of February 2009. Copper partitioning using SCE show that most of Cu in abandoned vineyard soil was in the residual phase (>60%) whereas in cultivated soil, BS and SPM, Cu was mostly (>25%) in non-residual fractions, mainly adsorbed onto iron oxide fractions. A small fraction of Cu was associated with organic matter (5 to 10%). Calculated enrichment factors (EF) are higher than 2 and the anthropogenic contribution was estimated between 50 to 85%. Values for δ65Cu in bulk samples were similar to bedrock therefore; δ65Cu on SCE fractions of superficial soils and SPM allowed for discrimination between Cu origin and distribution. Copper in residual fractions was of natural mineral origin (δ65Cu close to local bedrock, +0.07‰). Copper in water soluble fraction of SPM (δ65Cu = +0.26‰) was similar to dissolved river Cu (δ65Cu = +0.31‰). Copper from fungicide treatment (δ65Cu = −0.35‰) was bound to organic matter (δ65Cu = −0.20‰) without or with slight isotopic fractioning. A preferential adsorption of 65Cu onto iron oxides (δ65Cu = +0.5‰) is shown.

10. Temporal variability of nitrate transport through hydrological response during flood events within a large agricultural catchment in south-west France

Abstract

International audience; The temporal variability of nitrate transport was monitored continuously in a large agricultural catchment, the 1110 km2 Save catchment in south-west France, from January 2007 to June 2009. The overall aim was to analyse the temporal transport of nitrate through hydrological response during flood events in the catchment. Nitrate loads and hysteresis were also analysed and the relationships between nitrate and hydro-climatological variables within flood events were determined. During the study period, 19 flood events were analysed using extensive datasets obtained by manual and automatic sampling. ThemaximumNO3 − concentration during flood varied from 8.2 mg l−1 to 41.1 mg l−1 with flood discharge from 6.75 m3 s−1 to 112.60 m3 s−1. The annual NO3 − loads in 2007 and 2008 amounted to 2514 t and 3047 t, respectively, with average specific yield of 2.5 tkm−12 yr−1. The temporal transport of nitrate loads during different seasonal flood events varied from 12 t to 909 t. Nitrate transport during flood events amounted to 1600 t (64% of annual load; 16% of annual duration) in 2007 and 1872 t (62% of annual load; 20% of annual duration) in 2008. The level of peak discharge during flood events did not control peak nitrate concentrations, since similar nitrate peaks were produced by different peak discharges. Statistically strong correlations were found between nitrate transport and total precipitation, flood duration, peak discharge and total water yield. These four variables may be the main factors controlling nitrate export from the Save catchment. The relationship between nitrate and discharge (hysteresis patterns) investigated through flood events in this study was mainly dominated by anticlockwise behaviour.

International audience; Graphene-based nanomaterials such as graphene oxide (GO) possess unique properties triggering high expectations for the development of technological applications. Thus, GO is likely to be released in aquatic ecosystems. It is essential to evaluate its ecotoxicological potential to ensure a safe use of these nanomaterials. In amphibians, previous studies highlighted X. laevis tadpole growth inhibitions together with metabolic disturbances and genotoxic effects following GO exposure. As GO is known to exert bactericidal effects whereas the gut microbiota constitutes a compartment involved in host homeostasis regulation, it is important to determine if this microbial compartment constitutes a toxicological pathway involved in known GO-induced host physiological impairments. This study investigates the potential link between gut microbial communities and host physiological alterations. For this purpose, X. laevis tadpoles were exposed during 12 days to GO. Growth rate was monitored every 2 days and genotoxicity was assessed through enumeration of micronucleated erythrocytes. Genomic DNA was also extracted from the whole intestine to quantify gut bacteria and to analyze the community composition. GO exposure led to a dose dependent growth inhibition and genotoxic effects were detected following exposure to low doses. A transient decrease of the total bacteria was noticed with a persistent shift in the gut microbiota structure in exposed animals. Genotoxic effects were associated to gut microbiota remodeling characterized by an increase of the relative abundance of Bacteroides fragilis. The growth inhibitory effects would be associated to a shift in the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio while metagenome inference suggested changes in metabolic pathways and upregulation of detoxification processes. This work indicates that the gut microbiota compartment is a biological compartment of interest as it is integrative of host physiological alterations and should be considered for ecotoxicological studies as structural or functional impairments could lead to later life host fitness loss.

Abstract

Chromium is widely used as a tanning agent and can become a contaminant of concern in aquatic ecosystems receiving discharges from industrial or artisanal tanning activities. In a companion study, we showed that Cr discharged by tanneries was bioavailable to indigenous chironomids with accumulation via sediment ingestion likely to represent the predominant exposure route. However, Cr accumulation by chironomids did not directly reflect the degree of sediment contamination and the potential adverse effects of Cr accumulation on chironomids were not evaluated. In the present study, chironomids were exposed to homogenised, field-collected sediments in the laboratory and to intact sediments in situ using a customized caging system. Chromium concentrations were assessed in sediments, exposed larvae of laboratory-reared Chironomus riparius and overlying waters of in situ cages. Experimental results of Cr bioaccumulation were compared with expected Cr body burden in chironomids calculated using biodynamic modelling. Our data provided strong support to the hypothesis that Cr bioaccumulation in the field is specifically controlled by the deposition of contaminated suspended particulate matter (SPM) containing a pool of Cr readily bioavailable to surface deposit feeders. Considering freshly deposited SPM as an additional route of exposure for surface deposit feeders leads to a good agreement between the modelling and experimental results. Additionally, a Cr body burden of about 77 mu g g(-1) d.w. was identified as a tentative threshold above which effects on the growth of C. riparius may appear. While both laboratory and in situ experiments provide evidence for the availability of Cr in aquatic systemimpacted by tannery wastewaters, standard laboratory exposure conditions may miss additional exposure routes in the field and underestimate possible adverse effects on benthic organisms. Abstract

International audience; Intensive agriculture has profoundly altered biodiversity and trophic relationships in agricultural landscapes, leading to the deterioration of many ecosystem services such as pollination or biological control. Information on which spatio-temporal factors are simultaneously affecting crop pests and their natural enemies is required to improve conservation biological control practices. We conducted a study in 80 winter wheat crop fields distributed in three regions of Northwestern Europe (Brittany, Hauts-de-France and Wallonia), along intra-regional gradients of landscape complexity. Five taxa of major crop pests (aphids and slugs) and natural enemies (spiders, carabids, and parasitoids) were sampled three times a year, for two consecutive years. We analysed the influence of regional (meteorology), landscape (structure in both the years n and n-1) and local factors (hedge or grass strip field boundaries, and distance to boundary) on the abundance and species richness of crop-dwelling organisms, as proxies of the service/disservice they provide. Firstly, there was higher biocontrol potential in areas with mild winter climatic conditions. Secondly, natural enemy communities were less diverse and had lower abundances in landscapes with high crop and wooded continuities (sum of interconnected crop or wood surfaces), contrary to slugs and aphids. Finally, field boundaries with grass strips were more favourable to spiders and carabids than boundaries formed by hedges, while the opposite was found for crop pests, with the latter being less abundant towards the centre of the fields. We also revealed temporal modulation-and sometimes reversion-of the impact of local elements on crop biodiversity. To some extent, these results cause controversy because they show that hedgerows and woodlots should not be the unique cornerstones of agro-ecological landscape design strategies. We point out that combining woody and grassy habitats to take full advantage of the features and ecosystem services they both provide (biological pest control, windbreak effect, soil stabilization) may promote sustainable agricultural ecosystems. It may be possible to both reduce pest pressure and promote natural enemies by accounting for taxa-specific antagonistic responses to multi-scale environmental characteristics.

Abstract

International audience; The adsorption of trace metals on microplastics (MPs) is affected by the presence of surficial biofilms but their interactions are poorly understood. Here, we present the influence of Cu levels in real seawater (Toulon Bay, NW Mediterranean Sea) on microbial communities and Cu content of the resulting biofilms grown during incubation experiments on high density polyethylene. Two sets of incubation experiments were run with seawater supplied with MPs, sampled in two sites with contrasting Cu levels: Pt12 (most contaminated site) and Pt41P (less contaminated site). For each incubation experiment, 5 treatments were considered differing in Cu concentrations, ranging between 30 and 400 nM and between 6 and 60 nM, for Pt12 and Pt41p, respectively. A control experiment (filtered at 0.2 μm) was run in parallel for each incubation experiment. We observed that, at the time scale of the incubation period, both prokaryotic and eukaryotic richness and diversity were higher in the biofilms formed from the most contaminated site. In addition, we showed that Cu levels are shaping biofilm communities, evidencing co-occurrence patterns between prokaryotes and eukaryotes with diatoms playing a central role. These differences in biofilm formation were reflected in the amount of bioaccumulated Cu per dry weight of MPs, exhibiting higher values in the most contaminated site. Within this site, the increase of Cu seawater content enhanced its bioaccumulation onto MPs until reaching saturation. This study strongly suggests a striking link between seawater copper content, biofilm community shaping and the resulting Cu bioaccumulation onto MPs.

Abstract

International audience; The intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) predicts significant changes in precipitation patterns, an increase in temperature, and groundwater level variations by 2100. These changes are expected to alter light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) impacts since groundwater level fluctuations and temperature are known to influence both the mobility and release of LNAPL compounds to air and groundwater. Knowledge of these potential effects is currently dispersed in the literature, hindering a clear vision of the processes at play. This review aims to synthesize and discuss the possible effects of the increase in temperature and groundwater level fluctuations on the behavior of LNAPL and its components in a climate change context. In summary, a higher amplitude of groundwater table variations and higher temperatures will probably increase biodegradation processes, the LNAPL mobility, and spreading across the smear zone, favoring the release of LNAPL compounds to the atmosphere and groundwater but decreasing the LNAPL mass and its longevity. Outcomes will, nevertheless, vary greatly across arid, cold, or humid coastal environments, where different effects of climate change are expected. The effects of the climate change factors linked to soil heterogeneities, local conditions, and weathering processes will govern LNAPL behavior and need to be further clarified.

Abstract

International audience; Expected effects on marine biota of the ongoing elevation of water temperature and high latitudes is of major concern when considering the reliability of coastal ecosystem production. To compare the capacity of coastal organisms to cope with a temperature increase depending on their environmental history, responses of adult blue mussels (Mytilus spp.) taken from two sites differentially exposed to chemical pollution were investigated during an experimental exposure to a thermal stress. Immune parameters were notably altered by extreme warming and transcriptional changes for a broad selection of genes were associated to the temperature increase following a two-step response pattern. Site-specific responses suggested an influence of environmental history and support the possibility of a genetic basis in the physiological response. However no meaningful difference was detected between the response of hybrids and M galloprovincialis. This study brings new information about the capacity of mussels to cope with the ongoing elevation of water temperature in these coastal ecosystems.

Abstract

International audience; Industrial waste dumps are rarely colonized by vegetation after they have been abandoned, indicating biological infertility. Revegetation of industrial tailings dumps is thus necessary to prevent wind erosion, metal leaching and has been shown to restore soil functions and ecosystem services. However, little is known about the microbial colonization and community structure of vegetated tailings following the application of restoration technologies. In this study, we investigated the rhizosphere and phyllosphere bacterial communities of a poplar tree plantation within a phytomanagement-based restoration program of a Hg-contaminated site. We used Illumina-based sequencing combined with culture-dependent approaches to describe plant-associated bacterial communities and to isolate growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and Hg-resistant bacteria. The genus Streptomyces was highly specific to the root community, accounting for 24.4% of the relative abundance but only representing 0.8% of the soil community, whereas OTUs from the Chloroflexi phylum were essentially detected in the soil community. Aboveground habitats were dominated by bacteria from the Deinococcus-Thermus phylum, which were not detected in belowground habitats. Leaf and stem habitats were characterized by several dominant OTUs, such as those from the phylum Firmicutes in the stems or from the genera Methylobacterium, Kineococcus, Sphingomonas and Hymenobacter in the leaves. Belowground habitats hosted more cultivable Hg-resistant bacteria than aboveground habitats and more Hg-resistant bacteria were found on the episphere than in endospheric habitats. Hg-resistant isolates exhibiting plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits, when used as inoculants of Capsicum annuum, were shown to increase its root dry biomass but not Hg concentration. The N2-fixing and Hg-resistant species Pseudomonas graminis, observed in the poplar phyllosphere, may be a key microorganism for the restoration of industrial tailings dumps.

Abstract

International audience; Risk management of toxic substances is often based on Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) set for the water compartment, assuming they will also protect benthic organisms. In the absence of experimental data, EQS for sediments can be estimated by the equilibrium partitioning approach. The present study investigates whether this approach is protective of benthic organisms against pentachlorophenol (PCP), a legacy contaminant and EU priority substance still used in some parts of the world. Three freshwater species of invertebrates with different life cycles and feeding behaviours (the oligochaetes Lumbriculus variegatus, Tubifex tubifex and the dipteran insect Chironomus riparius) were exposed to PCP spiked sediments (2.10–46.03 mg PCP/kg d.w. plus controls) in laboratory standard tests. Exposure duration was 28 days for T. tubifex and L. variegatus and 10 and 28 days for C. riparius; according to the corresponding OECD guidelines. For each investigated end-point, dose-response data were normalized to the mean control and fitted to a four-parameter log-logistic model for calculating the corresponding EC50 and EC10. The ranges for EC50 and EC10 estimates were 4.39 (Chironomus riparius-emergence)–27.50 (Tubifex tubifex–cocoon) and 0.30 (T. tubifex–young worms)–16.70 (T. tubifex–cocoon) mg/kg d.w., respectively. The EC50 and the EC10 values of L. variegatus were within these ranges. Following the EU Technical Guidance for deriving EQS, the lowest EC10 value of 0.30 mg/kg (T. tubifex–young worms) resulted in a PCP quality standard (QS) for sediments of 30 ng/g, about one fourth of the tentative QS of 119 ng/g estimated by the equilibrium partitioning (EqP) approach. The response of benthic biota to PCP varied across organisms and across end-points for the same organism, so that the use of sediment PCP-QS calculated using the EqP-approach may be under-protective of the most sensitive organisms. Information on the possible effects of PCP on resident organisms must therefore be collected for appropriately managing aquatic systems.

Abstract

The threat posed by invasive non-native species worldwide requires a global approach to identify which introduced species are likely to pose an elevated risk of impact to native species and ecosystems. To inform policy, stakeholders and management decisions on global threats to aquatic ecosystems, 195 assessors representing 120 risk assessment areas across all six inhabited continents screened 819 non-native species from 15 groups of aquatic organisms (freshwater, brackish, marine plants and animals) using the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit. This multi-lingual decision-support tool for the risk screening of aquatic organisms provides assessors with risk scores for a species under current and future climate change conditions that, following a statistically based calibration, permits the accurate classification of species into high-, medium-and low-risk categories under current and predicted climate conditions. The 1730 screenings undertaken encompassed wide geographical areas (regions, political entities, parts thereof, water bodies, river basins, lake drainage basins, and marine regions), which permitted thresholds to be identified for almost all aquatic organismal groups screened as well as for tropical, temperate and continental climate classes, and for tropical and temperate marine ecoregions. In total, 33 species were identified as posing a 'very high risk' of being or becoming invasive, and the scores of several of these species under current climate increased under future climate conditions, primarily due to their wide thermal tolerances. The risk thresholds determined for taxonomic groups and climate zones provide a basis against which area-specific or climate-based calibrated thresholds may be interpreted. In turn, the risk rankings help decision-makers identify which species require an immediate 'rapid' management action (e.g. eradication, control) to avoid or mitigate adverse impacts, which require a full risk assessment, and which are to be restricted or banned with regard to importation and/or sale as ornamental or aquarium/fishery enhancement. Abstract

Microplastic (MP) pollution represents a novel environmental pressure acting on freshwater ecosystems. Improving our understanding of the dynamics of MP pollution in freshwater ecosystems is therefore a prerequisite for managing and limiting this pollution. In this study, we quantified the spatial and temporal variability of MP (size range 700 μm – 5 mm) pollution in surface water in 14 sites located across the Garonne river catchment (Southwestern France, 6 in the main river and 8 tributaries). MP concentration averaged 0.15 particles.m−3 (± 0.46 SD) and strongly varied both in space and in time. We found that the spatial variation in MP concentration was driven by urbanization and that the temporal variation in MP concentration and MP size was driven by hydrological conditions, with higher concentrations and smaller particles sizes in warm seasons with low discharge. Polyethylene (44.5%), polystyrene (30.1%) and polypropylene (18.2%) were the main polymers and their proportion did not vary significantly across sampled sites. Particle color was associated with polymer type, with a high proportion of white particles in polystyrene. We also found a significant and negative relationship between MP size and the distance to the source in sites located in the main stream. MP pollution across watershed, from headwater tributaries to lowland rivers, is dynamic, and further studies are needed to improve the resolution of our knowledge of spatial and temporal patterns of MP pollution in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract

International audience; Amphipods are one of the most important components of freshwater ecosystems. Among them, gammarids are the most widespread group in Europe and are often used as bioindicators and model organisms in ecotoxicology. However, their use, especially of Gammarus fossarum for the study of the environmental impact of nanoparticles, has been rather limited so far. G. fossarum was selected to assess effects of well-characterized chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs 20nm and 200nm) and "green" laboratory synthetized (from plant leaf extracts) AgNPs (AgNPs 23nm and 27nm). AgNO3 was used as a positive control to compare AgNPs effects and silver ions effects. A multibiomarker approach was used to investigate the sub-lethal effects of AgNPs on physiological and behavioural responses of G. fossarum. Two different experiments were carried out. In a preliminary experiment, two populations of G. fossarum (G.f1 and G.f2) were tested for sensitivity differences and the most sensitive one was exposed, in a final experiment, to sub-lethal concentrations of AgNO3 and the most toxic AgNPs. AgNO3 and AgNPs 23nm led to a significant decrease in survival rates, osmoregulation and locomotor activity. Ag internalisation, performed with Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), showed the presence of silver in gills of G.f2 exposed to AgNPs 23 and 27nm. This study highlighted the influence of method of synthesis on ion release, uptake and toxic effects of AgNPs on G. fossarum. Osmoregulation appeared to be an effective biomarker indicating the physiological health status of G. fossarum. Locomotor activity, which was the most impacted response, reflects the potential effects of released ions from AgNPs 23nm at the population level as locomotion is necessary for foraging, finding mates and escaping from predators. Therefore, we propose G. fossarum as a suitable model for environmental nanotoxicology, providing information both at individual and population levels.

Abstract

International audience; Climatic extreme events such as droughts (unpredictable), dry periods (predictable) or even flush floods, threaten freshwater ecosystems worldwide. The filtering mechanisms of these events and their strength on communities, however, can be different among regions. While time-for-adaptation theory defines whether or not water scarcity can be considered as disturbance, the stress-dominance theory predicts an increase in importance of environmental filtering and a decrease in the role of biotic interactions in communities with increasing environmental stress. Here, we tested whether environmental filtering (leading to trait convergence) or limiting similarity (leading to trait divergence) is the main assembly rule shaping the structure and trait composition of benthic diatom assemblages in Mediterranean (Portuguese) and continental (Hungarian) temporary and perennial streams. We assumed that the trait composition of diatom assemblages in the two stream types would be less different in the Mediterranean than in the continental region (addressed to time-for-adaptation theory). We also hypothesized that trait composition would be shaped by environmental filtering in the Hungarian streams while by biotic interactions in Portuguese streams (addressed to stress-dominance theory). Our results supported our first hypothesis since traits, which associated primarily to temporary streams were found only in the continental region. Our findings, however, only partially proved the stress-dominance hypothesis. In the continental region, where drying up of streams were induced by unpredictable droughts, biotic interactions were the main assembly rules shaping community structure. In contrast, environmental filtering was nearly as important as limiting similarity in structuring trait composition in the Mediterranean region during the predictable dry phase with no superficial flow. These analyses also highlighted that drought events (both predictable and unpredictable ones) have a complex and strong influence on benthic diatom assemblages resulting even in irreversible changes in trait composition and thereby in ecosystem functioning.

Abstract

Anthropogenic activities linked to various new technologies are increasingly disrupting REEs biogeochemical cycles. A catchment-based perspective is therefore necessary to distinguish between natural (i.e., changes in lithology) and human-related sources of REEs variability. In the present study, REEs patterns, anomalies and fluxes were investigated in the French part of the Moselle River basin (Moselle River itself and some of its headstreams and tributaries). The REEs patterns in the headstream waters were highly variable and mostly related to the complex underlying lithology (granite, sandstone, tuff and graywacke). Along the Moselle River, the presence of positive Gd anomalies and a regular LREEs depletion/HREEs enrichment pattern on sandstone/limestone substrates were the most distinctive features. The Gd anomaly varied from 1.8 to 8.7, with anthropogenic Gd representing 45 to 88% of the total Gd. A linear relationship was obtained between the anthropogenic Gd flux and the cumulative population along the watershed. However, the magnitude of the Gd anomalies was shown to depend on the methodological approach chosen for their calculation. The use of a threshold value to identify the presence of an anthropogenic Gd anomaly may therefore be basin (and lithology) dependent, and care has to be taken in comparing results from different rivers or lithologies. Concentration of anthropogenic Gd in the Moselle River and its tributaries were close to, or above, the value of 20 ng/L reported in literature to elicit adverse biological effects in laboratory cell cultures. The ecotoxicological significance of Gd anomalies deserves further investigation because concentrations of anthropogenic Gd may also vary depending on the methodological approach used for calculating Gd anomalies.
