Forest restoration has been a common practice to safeguard water quality and stream health but it is unclear to which extent and pace forest restoration recovers stream ecosystem structure and functions. Also, stream health might be affected by the forest restoration type and the quality of the interventions. Here, we sought to evaluate the recovery of stream habitat and water quality through forest restoration in catchments dominated by pasturelands, and explored the relationship between landscape structure and stream ecosystem recovery. We sampled a total of 30 catchments during the dry season of 2023, covering six different classes (five catchment per class), based on the type and extent of forest cover: (i) all catchment area covered by native forest remnants, (ii) catchments mostly covered by old (26-37 years) restored forests, (iii) catchments mostly covered by young (5-25 years) restored forests, (iv) catchments in a pasture matrix with forest remnants around springs, (v) catchments in a pasture matrix with riparian buffers covered by pioneer vegetation (mostly herbs and shrubs), and (vi) catchments mostly covered by pastures. Data on stream water (e.g. temperature, nutrients and sediments) and habitat (e.g. substrate heterogeneity and volume of wood debris) quality were sampled and landscape metrics calculated by GIS at reach, riparian and catchment scales. In catchments covered by remnant and old restored forests, the water temperature and nutrient concentration were lower, and instream leaf banks were higher, whereas the number of large wood debris was higher in forest remnant catchments. Water temperature and ammoniacal-N correlated with Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) at reach scale. Substrate heterogeneity and volume of woody debris correlated strongly with NDVI and proportion of forest over 38 years old at the catchment scale. This outcome shows the potential application of forest structure (NDVI) and age for monitoring the stream ecosystem benefits of forest restoration. Overall, we found a gradient of recovery of both water and habitat quality progressing from more degraded (pasture-dominated catchments, pasture-dominated with forest remnants around springs, pasture-dominated with pioneer vegetation in riparian buffers) to more conserved catchments (young forest restoration, old forest restoration and old-growth conserved forests). Tree-related Microhabitats (TreMs) are essential for sustaining forest biodiversity. Although TreMs represent ephemeral resources that are spread across the landscape, their spatial distribution within temperate forests remains poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a study on 90 sample plots (0.05 ha each) located in a primeval mountain European beech Fagus sylvatica-dominated forest (Bieszczady Mountains, Carpathians). We explored the TreM profile with its link to habitat characteristics and described the spatial distribution of TreM indices. We identified 61 TreM types, with a mean richness of 19.7 ± 4.9 SD TreM types per plot, a mean density of 740.7 ± 292.5 SD TreM-bearing trees ha -1 and a mean TreM diversity of 1.2 ± 0.1 SD. The diameter and living status of trees (living vs dead standing tree) were correlated with TreM richness on an individual tree. The stand structure, i.e. density and/or basal area of living and/or dead standing trees, and topographic conditions, i.e. slope exposure, were correlated with the TreM richness, density and diversity recorded on a study plot. We found no relationship between TreM richness, density and diversity and the presence of canopy gaps, which indicates that the influence of small-scale disturbances on the TreM profile is limited. However, our analysis revealed a clustered spatial pattern of TreM indices, with TreM-rich habitat patches (hot-spots) covering ~20 % of the forest. A moderate TreM richness, density and diversity dominated ~60 % of the forest, while TreM-poor habitat patches (cold-spots) covered ~20 %. Based on our findings, we advise the transfer of knowledge on the spatial distribution of TreMs from primeval to managed forests and advocate the '2:6:2' triad rule: to allocate 20 % of forests as strictly protected areas, to dedicate 60 % to low-intensity forest management with the retention of large living trees and all dead standing trees, and to use the remaining 20 % for intensive timber production. To ensure the continuance of the majority of TreM types, ≥55 living trees ha -1  >60 cm in diameter should be retained. European eel is considered a "critically endangered" species due to its population decline (c.a. 98 %) in all European waters, primarily because human activities. The eel life cycle is very complex as it includes long migrations, and although aquaculture can help in repopulation, at this time artificially raised eel larvae have little survival. Therefore, to reverse this situation, in 2007 the EU adopted the Eel Regulation, starting a series of plans to improve the conservation and the recovery of the eel population, which included a ban on importing and exporting eels in all EU countries. However, an illegal global market and food fraud developed, turning Europe into the source of the international illegal eel trade. This study reports the evaluation of the welfare consequences of the illegal transport of European glass eels using their epithelial mucus, one of the most promising tools for studying endangered fish species. We also aimed to determine the recovery time required in controlled conditions before their release to the Ebro River. The results showed that high metabolite and cortisol levels were observed in mucus. In addition, the defensive capacity against possible bacterial infections was also affected due to the transport conditions as bacterial co-culture with mucus analysis indicated. Regarding the recovery time, we analysed the same parameters as for the initial transport point resulting in a stabilisation of stress parameters and an increased defensive capacity from day 3 to the final release, but the best results were observed after 2 months under optimal conditions. These findings suggest that transport stress is critical for the survival of glass eels, and the stress and defensive capacities analysis suggests the need for a recovery period prior to release. Seagrass meadows are one of the most productive ecosystems of the world. Seagrass enhances biodiversity, sequesters CO 2 and functions as a coastal protection measure by mitigating waves and enhancing sedimentation. However, populations are declining in many regions and natural recolonization of bare sediment beds is protracted and unlikely. The widely used single shoot transplantation method for seagrass restoration is time-consuming and expensive, thus it is important that chances of survival are high. Dislodgement due to wave action poses a particular high risk during the first days after transplantation. This study replicates the transplantation method with a total of 224 harvested shoots (Zostera marina) planted in a wave flume under real sea state conditions. After varying rooting periods in cultivation tanks with low hydrodynamic exposure, the shoots together with their surrounding soil were installed inside the flume and exposed to increasing sea state in intermediate water depth (near-bottom maximum orbital velocity MOV = 0.25-0.59 m/s) for 250 min (≈5000 waves). Half the plants were protected by a willow fence, serving as a restoration facilitator. Our results show that dislodgement is not driven by singular exceptional large waves, but by the wave-induced stress from long-term cyclic loads (fatigue). Furthermore, we found that shoots with a rooting period <12 days are especially vulnerable. We also detected that dislodgement is critically impacted by belowground biomass and leaf surface. The deployed restoration facilitator enhances shoot survival by 22.4 % and mitigates the effect of the rooting period. The findings indicate that wave exposure and shoot morphometrics are crucial to shoot survival in the first 12 days after transplantation. Considering morphometrics in shoot selection for transplantation may thus reduce the need for restoration facilitation. Estuaries are complex ecosystems, being difficult to determine the way management actions affect them. This study quantitatively evaluated the spread of invasive submerged and floating aquatic macrophyte vegetation in Franks Tract of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in response to two types of management actions, drought salinity barriers in years 2015, 2021 and 2022, and herbicide treatments in years 2004-2022. A Random Forest algorithm applied to airborne hyperspectral and satellite multispectral images generated maps of macrophyte cover in 2004-2022. Two methods assessed the effects of the management actions. The first one compared macrophyte cover trends between Franks Tract and reference sites across the Delta. The second one predicted macrophyte cover within Franks Tract using multiple environmental variables with a Long Short-Term Memory model. According to the comparison with Big Break reference site, submerged/floating macrophyte cover was +40.9 %/+8.6 % (2015), +57.8 %/+12.7 % (2021) and +75.7 %/+34.3 % (2022) with the barrier than predicted without it. Other reference sites rendered the same tendences in 2015 but mixed results for the other years. It is questionable if these sites behave as true references. Instead, the submerged/floating macrophyte cover was +8.0 %/+0.4 % (2015), +10.3 %/-20.6 % (2021) and -22.7 %/-9.3 % (2022) with the barrier than the Long Short-Term Memory model predicted without it. Additionally, the submerged/floating macrophyte cover with the herbicide treatments was -75.8 %/-72.4 % than modeled without it throughout 2004-2022. The species-area relationship (SAR) is one of the oldest in ecology, linking the increase in species richness in sampling area. Later, new parameters were incorporated into its equation, such as taxon-specific responses, habitats use by species and species adapted to human-modified habitats, originating the Countryside SAR, a version intended to integrate the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, which is still inefficiencies when used to evaluate food production systems. Therefore, we present the first attempt to incorporate into Countryside SAR the minimum land demand parameter for food production, the food environmental footprint - EFP, and improve the use of the method within the agricultural sciences scope. To prepare the EFP, we used land cover data for two types of food systems: agriculture (annual crops), composed of nine types of food; and, livestock (pasture), consisting of meat production. They were later tested in inventories for the Western European broadleaf forest ecoregion (ecocode: PA0445). The most important result observed was that the models responded to variations in production values, resulting in higher impact and a more conservative result when EFP is adopted. But as historically integrating a productivity parameter, or performance of production systems, has been left out of the development of SAR, only the first step has been taken. Therefore, incorporating minimum land demand for food production into the Countryside SAR appears to be a new stage in its development, allowing to generate results that consider the "efficiency" of food production, assuming a more agronomic profile. This review explicitly emphasizes the important yet unnoticed potential of macroalgae, such as seaweeds and kelps, as a powerful nature-based solution for climate change mitigation, with greater focus on the Indian Ocean seaweed diversity and efforts towards their conservation and management. Despite the IPCC's recognition of Blue Carbon ecosystems, seaweed ecosystems remain largely excluded from carbon accounting and policy frameworks. Herein, we specifically focus on the immense capacity of macroalgae globally and in the Indian Ocean coastal communities to sequester carbon, support marine biodiversity, and provide a range of ecosystem services. Through comprehensive analysis of existing literature on the primary productivity, species distribution and carbon sequestration capabilities of seaweeds, we highlight their pivotal role in carbon capture and utilization within a circular economy model. This review explores the ecosystem services provided by both wild and cultivated seaweeds, advocating for innovative applications and responsible management practices to maximize their climate mitigation potential. Our investigation identifies significant knowledge gaps and barriers in the conservation of economically significant, dwindling populations of seaweeds in the Indian Ocean and the integration of seaweed ecosystems into blue carbon policies, including the need for standardized classification, valuation, and long-term conservation strategies. Further, we address the impact of anthropogenic activities on wild seaweed biodiversity and the necessity for reliable carbon removal technologies to support seaweed aquaculture beds. This review urges policy reform, increased research and funding to this critical area. Natural capital accounting can help farmers and producers meet global demands to disclose supply chain impacts on biodiversity and to reverse biodiversity declines in farmland. To date, methods have been limited in their ability to reliably represent biodiversity, especially fauna, and are typically prepared at the regional scale, not at the farm scale - the scale at which many decisions that impact habitats for species are made. We surveyed birds at 1155 sites across 50 farms (total area = 135,890 ha) in south-eastern Australia to relate site-level species richness of groups of birds to spatially discrete ecosystem condition states that are based on the structure and composition of vegetation and to develop a framework for farm-scale biodiversity accounting. Site-level species richness of bird groups was strongly related to ecosystem states. Spatially explicit models enabled calculation of the proportion of a farm that provides high-quality habitat for each bird group. This metric represents farm-level diversity and can be used to quantify a farm's impact on biodiversity and contribution to biodiversity conservation. This approach could be applied to agriculture regions within Australia and could be replicated in agricultural landscapes around the world where it is possible to establish applicable state and transition models with a reliable 'best-on-offer' or 'reference' condition state. Protected areas are one of the main tools for biological conservation worldwide. They have been designed largely focused on terrestrial and marine habitats and species, despite the worldwide deterioration of freshwater ecosystems. Yet, the effectiveness of terrestrial protected areas towards the protection freshwater ecosystems located within their borders is still poorly known and the few studies on the subject have yielded mixed results. Historical records on benthic diatom communities and environmental data, gathered in 174 Portuguese streams (128 inside terrestrial protected areas and 91 without any kind of statutory protection), were used to explore trends in biological quality and biodiversity in response to the existence of a protection status (spatial comparisons) and of different protection categories. Temporal comparisons were also made, when data was available. The biological quality was assessed using the Indice de Polluosensibilité Spécifique (IPS) and data on diatom traits such as life-forms, ecological guilds, or cell size. The results suggest that although terrestrial protected areas don't have the conservation of freshwater ecosystems as a priority, they can contribute nonetheless to their preservation, since both the biological quality and the average abundance of threatened species were significantly higher inside terrestrial protected areas. Yet, the diversity of diatom communities wasn't significantly different when comparing protected and unprotected sites. The existence of several cumulative protection categories towards que quality of freshwater ecosystems didn't always prove beneficial. In particular RAMSAR sites didn't provide additional protection when compared to other protection categories. Livestock farming system (LFS) is an important pillar of the agri-food system. With global environmental problems severer, exploring how to improve the eco-environment of LFS through institutional change is receiving increasingly concern. Based on macro and micro data from Inner Mongolia, this study examines the impacts of land titling on the eco-environment of LFS, explores the potential mechanisms, and analyzes the heterogeneity in terms of farm size by applying GIS spatial analysis and time-varying difference-in-difference (TV-DID) model. Main results showed that overall land titling significantly improved the eco-environment represented by GVC. (1) The GIS spatial analysis indicated that land titling considerably increased GVC. The TV-DID model results further verified that land titling increased the GVC by 0.306 grade, and increased vegetation height by 1.27 cm on average; (2) The effects varied across farm sizes, with the GVC increased by 0.745 grade on farms larger than 373 ha and 0.230 grade otherwise; (3) The effects were mainly induced by the enhancement of farmers' attitudes, management capacities and land use behaviors after land titling. These three effects indicate the net effect, scale effect and security effect of land titling on the eco-environment of LFS, respectively. Globally, land use change has consistently resulted in greater losses than gains in aboveground biomass (AGB). Forest fragmentation is a primary driver of biodiversity loss and the depletion of natural capital. Measuring landscape characteristics and analyzing changes in forest landscape patterns are essential for accounting for the contributions of forest ecosystems to the economy and human well-being. This study predicts national forest distribution for 2036 and 2054 using a Cellular Automata (CA) system and assesses ecosystem conditions through landscape metrics at the patch, class, and landscape levels. We calculated 130 metrics and applied a Variance Threshold method to remove features with low variance, testing different thresholds. The first filtered-out metrics were further analysed through Principal Component Analysis combined with a Feature Importance technique to select and rank the top 10 indicators: effective mesh size, splitting index, mean radius of gyration, largest patch index, mean core area, core area percentage, Simpson's evenness index, mutual information, Simpson's diversity index, and mean contiguity index. The eleventh selected indicator is the AGB density, a structural measurement for ecosystem condition and a proxy for forest carbon storage and sequestration assessments. From 2000 to 2018, the national AGB forest carbon stock decreased from 131.5 to 91.3 Megatons (Mt) with expected values for 2036 and 2054 being 71.8 and 55.3 Mt., respectively. Landscape measurements quantitatively describe forest dynamics, providing insights into the structure, configuration, and changes characterizing landscape evolution. This research underscores the capability of CA models to map large-scale forest resources and predict future development scenarios, offering useful information for conservation and environmental management decisions. This study presents an integrated model that addresses the complex interplay between water, land, food, and human health for the optimal design of a BioEnergy Supply Chain (BESC), with a focus on future climate challenges. The model is designed to balance key objectives such as minimizing economic costs, reducing human health impacts, and optimizing water use. By employing a weighted-sum approach, the model identifies the best land allocation for various crops and the most efficient biofuel production pathways. Climate change impacts are analyzed by downscaling projections from the Hadley Centre Global Environmental Model (HADGEM) for Qazvin Province, Iran, using two climate scenarios: SSP5-8.5 (high emissions) and SSP2-4.5 (moderate emissions). The results indicate that water use for crop cultivation increases significantly under SSP5-8.5, by 14.31 % and 132.97 %, compared to SSP2-4.5 and a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, respectively. Economic costs under SSP5-8.5 are found to be 2.5 and 4.1 times higher than those under SSP2-4.5 and BAU, while the avoided human health impacts decrease. These results reveal critical trade-offs between financial investment and human health outcomes under different climate scenarios. The optimal bioenergy pathways include bioethanol from corn and sugar beet, biogas from wheat, biohydrogen from corn, and jet fuel from wheat. The study underscores the necessity of integrating climate change constraints into BESC optimization models, as these significantly affect both economic and health outcomes. Alpine grassland ecosystems on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) provide critical services but face threats from human activity and climate change. Ensuring ecosystem health is vital for sustainability and preserving ecosystem services and processes, especially in delicate ecosystems such as the Gannan alpine grasslands. However, there is currently a lack of a comprehensive model that integrates ecosystem structure, function, processes, and socioeconomic factors. This study proposes a comprehensive ecosystem health assessment approach that combines the revised driver-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) framework with ecological security patterns (ESPs), overcoming the limitations of previous models that focused primarily on ecosystem structure without sufficiently addressing dynamic ecosystem processes. This method aims to diagnose the health of the Gannan alpine grasslands on the QTP from 2000 to 2020. We found that in the context of global climate change, the ecological health was maintained at a relatively high level (covering 75.41 % of the area) in most areas of Gannan, whereas lower levels (12.09 %), were found in the northern areas of Gannan and southwestern areas of Maqu likely resulting from higher livestock density, increased population density, and weaker landscape connectivity. Conventional tillage, extreme climate events, increasing weed incidence, pest and disease pressures, and diminished farm input availability negatively impact crop yield, stability, profitability, and water productivity in South Asia's rice-wheat (R-W) systems. This article reviews and evaluates the effectiveness and benefits of conservation agriculture (CA) practices in improving soil health, water productivity, and sustainability in R-W systems. CA practices focus on minimum soil disturbance, permanent soil cover, and crop rotations. Techniques such as direct seeding in rice and zero tillage in wheat are employed, supported by advancements in zero tillage sowing machinery like super-seeders. CA practices contribute significantly to ecosystem health by conserving soil and water, enhancing soil quality, reducing erosion, and improving nutrient use efficiency. They also lower production costs, increase water use efficiency, stabilize yields, promote crop diversification, and mitigate climate change effects through carbon sequestration and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. However, initial challenges include increased weed pressure and the need for suitable rice varieties for direct seeding. In conclusion, CA practices support sustainable and climate-resilient farming, improving land and water productivity, food security, and on-farm profits. Despite the benefits and growing government support, widespread adoption in South Asia remains limited. Revealing the complex interactions between ecosystem services (ESs) and their underlying mechanisms is a prerequisite for formulating sustainable ecological management strategies. However, few studies have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the driving and response mechanisms of ESs interactions. Therefore, this study established an integrated framework to first quantify the interactions between ESs, then identify their dominant natural-socioeconomic drivers, explore their spatial non-stationary responses, and ultimately propose corresponding strategies to optimize ecosystem management. The results indicated that: (1) from 2000 to 2020, food supply and carbon sequestration increased by 18.86 % and 3.79 %, respectively, while soil conservation and water purification decreased by 9.36 % and 4.52 %, respectively, and the remaining ESs were relatively stable; spatially, apart from food supply, the other six ESs exhibited a pattern of being higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest; (2) among the 21 pairs of ESs, synergies predominated, while trade-offs occurred only between food supply and other ESs, all exhibiting weak trade-offs (r < 0.3, p < 0.001); (3) ESs interactions were more influenced by natural factors, particularly climate, than by socioeconomic factors. Moreover, the responses of ESs interactions to their dominant drivers exhibited significant spatial non-stationarity, based on which targeted strategies were proposed to optimize ecosystem management. Biodiversity and water are considered critical foundations of ecosystem function and service provision. However, without adequate measurement of biodiversity impacts, the interventions related to NbS or 'Nature-based Interventions' (NbI) risk assuming biodiversity co-benefits that may be non-existent or sub-optimal. We systematically reviewed 527 publications on NbI with physical outcomes for flood management to examine if biodiversity outcomes were measured or monitored across time at micro- to macro-scales. Only 11 % of the literature on NbI related to flood management explicitly measured biodiversity within at least one taxon. Of those studies, 41 % measured biodiversity metrics of flora, with a focus on bioengineering benefits. No specific non-vegetative taxa were documented in >10 % of studies mentioning biodiversity. Dominant non-vegetative taxa were bioindicator species (invertebrates, insects, molluscs, birds, and fish) typically associated with water quality. Few studies monitored biodiversity over time, and most monitored for <20 years. Only 35 % of studies that mentioned biodiversity measured a correlation between biodiversity and flood management outcomes. Most found a positive relationship, with apparent trade-offs for different species over time. Thailand aims to achieve high-income status by 2037 through the strategies developed in its 20-year National Strategy Preparation Act. Considerable friction is being generated through climate change and unsustainable natural resources management which are eroding Thailand's natural capital base, resilience and ability to generate wealth and progress toward its target. In this paper, we examine the impacts of ongoing environmental degradation including continued deforestation and climate change-induced impacts on flooding, productivity and sea-level rise. We contrast this future trajectory with the implementation of a policy package aligned with Thailand's National Strategy and Nationally Determined Contributions to counteract environmental degradation and adapt to and mitigate climate change. Where environmental degradation continues unchecked, Gross Domestic Product would decline by US$553 billion. Standing forest stock would be reduced from 8.25 million hectares to 5.43 million hectares and cumulative losses of Provisioning, Cultural and recreational and Regulating ecosystem services would be US$99 billion, US$61 billion and US$17 billion, respectively, by 2050. Policies to arrest environmental degradation would offset some but not all impacts with the loss in Gross Domestic Product 32 % (US$174.9 billion) of what it would be without policy intervention. Wealth, the more appropriate metric of sustainable economic development, would increase by US$54.5 billion. The most effective measure to arrest environmental degradation and build wealth would be to eliminate deforestation. Doing so quickly would reduce ecosystem service losses, maintain carbon in forests and enhance water regulation ecosystem services which are critical for reducing flood hazards, loss of life and infrastructure damage. Green infrastructure, which is designed to provide sustainable and resilient stormwater management solutions, inherently supports flood mitigation, pollution reduction, and a decentralized water supply. When proposing this type of infrastructure, it is important to identify environmental trade-offs related to their implementation. Our research focuses on a city-wide rain barrel (RB) deployment in northern and southern California, San Leandro and Imperial Beach, respectively. San Leandro and Imperial Beach are similar in that they are both low-lying coastal areas, containing a high percentage of residential areas with several census tracts listed as disadvantaged. A key difference is that San Leandro receives approximately 2.5 times the annual rainfall as Imperial Beach. This work utilizes PCSWMM for stormwater modeling to quantify captured stormwater, changes in conventional stormwater management (such as ocean outfall stormwater pumping), and reduced pollutant loading for RB deployment. Stormwater modeling is combined with Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to quantify trade-offs in terms of Global Warming Potential (GWP), Human Toxicity Potential (HTP), Ecotoxicity Potential (EcoP) and Eutrophication Potential (EP). In Imperial Beach, RBs reduce GWP by 2.6 × 10 6  kg Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO 2 -Eq) and increase HTP by 3.8 × 10 6  kg Dichlorobenzene Equivalent (DCB-Eq). In San Leandro, GWP reduces by 1.3 × 10 7  kg CO 2 -Eq, and HTP increases by 4.7 × 10 6  kg DCB-Eq. In Imperial Beach, a reduction in runoff from captured rainfall results in a 44 % reduction of pollutant loading, while San Leandro sees a 27 % reduction. These reductions are equal to the reductions in EcoP and EP. Normalized per 1 m 3 of collected stormwater, there is a lower reduction in GWP for Imperial Beach than San Leandro, and a higher contribution to HTP. This study advances current knowledge by quantifying RB benefits through multiple sustainability metrics, while comparing two underserved coastal California communities with distinct rainfall patterns. Informal green spaces (IGS) are a hot topic in urban biodiversity studies, but overlooked in urban biodiversity conservation or management, especially in tropical coastal cities, where comprehensive assessments remain scarce. Most existing research has been limited to species diversity (α-diversity), with few studies addressing functional and phylogenetic diversity as aspects of α-diversity, and species turnover (β-diversity) across multiple IGS types. This study bridges these gap by conducting a detailed vegetation survey in Jiangdong New Area of Haikou City, establishing 213 sites. Within these sites, we examined 343 IGS sample plots and 274 formal green spaces (FGS) sample plots. We assessed species, functional, and phylogenetic diversity using α and β diversity metrics and analyzed the influence of environmental factors with generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs). The results recorded 235 species of herbaceous plants from 179 genera and 54 families in IGS, including 215 spontaneous species, compared to 154 spontaneous species in FGS. Our findings indicate that IGS exhibited higher species richness and functional richness compared to FGS, though differences in phylogenetic diversity were less pronounced. Key environmental factors like relative humidity, trampling intensity, and proximity to urban areas significantly influenced species richness and abundance in IGS. Plastic pollution in the natural environment has been overlooked, which leads to potential risks to human health and wildlife. This paper provides an overview on citizen science approach to mitigate and manage plastic pollution in natural environments. Also, this paper highlights the importance of citizen science in raising public awareness of environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices. Case studies and different projects, such as "Plastic Pirates", "Litterati", "Trash Hunter", "International Pellat Watch", and many more projects on the role of citizen scientists are summarized, which aims to monitor and collect plastic resin pellets from different ecosystems, for example, beaches, seas, and rivers and also engage various stakeholders, for example, citizen scientists, students, academic and research organizations, non-profits, government agencies, industry, and local communities. Additionally, this paper discusses different methodologies, such as surveys and sampling approaches, using mobile apps, instruments and kits to collect information on plastic pollution. Importantly, it discusses the need for global partnerships and policies to address plastic waste management and prevent conflict. Likewise, this review emphasizes the citizen sciences and impacts of plastics on both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems to conserve, preserve, and monitor biodiversity through citizen participation. This study also highlights the significance of community involvement, such as local, coastal, marginalized, or vulnerable communities, in environmental research and the potential benefits of citizen science programs. Sugarcane dominates global sugar and bioethanol production, involving extensive cultivation and supply chain activities. The sugarcane development encounters challenges, such as climate change, diseases, pests, and water scarcity, affecting growth and yields. Sugarcane management often involves the use of pesticides, which risk soil and water contamination. It also leads to biodiversity loss, high water use, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy consumption. This study conducted a life cycle assessment to compare the environmental impacts of cropdusters and drones in ripener application for sugarcane farming. The life cycle assessment enables informed decisions on sustainable practices by providing a holistic view of environmental impacts, facilitating comparisons, and identifies hotspots. The analysis examined the impacts of machinery, ripener compounds, and spraying operations. It explored using sugarcane waste (bagasse) as bioenergy for drone batteries or cropdusters. Results show that drones minimize environmental impacts by 11,557 kgCO 2 eq, 128,079 MJ, and 103 m 3 for 40 ha farm compared to using cropdusters. Also, bagasse from a 40-ha farm can generate 1.93E+09 Wh of bioenergy, enough to charge drone batteries for spraying over approximately 4.9 million ha or to fuel cropdusters for 0.04 million ha of sugarcane. Urbanization deletes and degrades natural ecosystems, contributing to the ongoing biodiversity crisis. Yet, on the local scale, well-managed cities can host significant biodiversity, including endemic and threatened species. Understanding the trade-off between local and regional biodiversity outcomes is limited, primarily due to the lack of comprehensive sampling across heterogeneous urban areas and adjacent regions. To address this knowledge gap and assess urban areas' value for conserving the regional species pool, we conducted an extensive bird survey across an urbanized metropolitan area and its surrounding region (>300 km²). The survey included 11 cities, 24 rural settlements, agricultural areas, and natural habitats, employing high-resolution geographic data (e.g., 3D vegetation layer) to examine land cover effects on α- and β-diversity metrics. Our findings reveal that urban avian diversity can surpass adjacent non-urban areas, with urban green spaces among the most species-rich habitats. Most regional bird species did not avoid urban areas, indicating their significant potential for regional conservation, particularly in human-dominated areas. Across the region, avian communities were highly heterogeneous, driven by species turnover rather than loss, highlighting urban biodiversity complexity. However, factors associated with urbanization negatively affected both α- and β-diversity, with synanthropic species most prevalent in urban habitats. As populations and affluence grows, increased demand for food drives a concomitant increase in associated water scarcity. A relative and absolute increase in crop-embodied virtual water traded between countries is a geopolitically important component of this scarcity. In addition to biophysical dimensions, blue water consumption can have varying impacts on humans and biodiversity. This study focuses on virtual water trade relating to consumption of crops and crop products, and its related socio-ecological impacts, in a water scarce country with high reliance on virtual water, Israel. The results of two established methodologies are assessed, in calculating consumption associated with the virtual water trade of up to 100 crops. Using virtual water quantifications from the methodology with higher spatial resolution, together with two complementary sets of characterisation factors from life cycle impact assessment methodologies (water scarcity indices and potential disappeared fractions) a novel comparison of impacts on ecosystems relating to loss of species and water denial is facilitated. As an additional impact indicator, groundwater depletion is calculated for the virtual water trade of a narrower set of crops. Israel's crop production was found to be associated with outsized cumulative blue water consumption volumes, relative to imports. In addition, regional and country hotspots of blue water consumption, groundwater depletion, downstream user impact and biodiversity loss were identified, including in India, The United States, and the Mediterranean region. Desertification and wastewater discharge are two global issues that severely threaten the sustainable use of available natural resources. This study aimed to explore the potential for transferring nutrients from municipal wastewater to drylands by inducing artificial biocrusts through the inoculation of wastewater-cultured Scytonema javanicum onto the sand surface in Gurbantunggut Desert. The results demonstrated that wastewater cultured S. javanicum effectively induced artificial biocrusts, achieving high photosynthetic biomass and nutrient accumulation (Chl-a, AP and OC) comparable to those induced by S. javanicum cultured in synthetic medium. In addition, the risk index (RI) value of 124.32 suggested a low ecological risk using wastewater cultured S. javanicum to induce artificial biocrusts. Globally, massive resource inputs and undesired outputs hindered the further development of the dairy industry. This study proposed a method applying data envelopment analysis to the water-energy-labor-food nexus to assess the eco-efficiency of the milk production system (MEE) from a systemic perspective. Using national statistics on scale farms for the period 2014-2021, we illustrated the effects of scale and intensification on MEE in China. In the study period, the production cost increased by 23 % and milk production rose by 30 % at the same time. Despite the increases in both water and energy inputs, the rise in milk production weakened the resource burdens and thus lifted MEE by 24 %. The resource investment pattern shifted from water- and labor-oriented to energy-oriented. The growing environmental risks induced by interacting climate and human-induced pressures threaten the survival and growth of marine coastal ecosystems (MCEs) and the ecosystem services they provide. Nature-based solutions (NBS), consisting of ecosystem-based approaches, have emerged as vital tools for climate adaptation and mitigation facing biodiversity loss and societal challenges. Identifying suitable environmental conditions for implementing Blue-NBS in marine coastal areas is a key priority to drive robust and cost-effective nature-based adaptation pathways. This study developed a suitability model for Blue-NBS, with a specific focus on Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Mediterranean Sea under a baseline scenario. GIS-based Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) was applied for data integration and prioritization of different environmental variables in geomorphological (e.g., depth), water quality (WQ) (e.g., salinity), and climatic (e.g., thermal stress) sub-groups. Suitability classes and scores for each variable were determined using statistical distributions, ensuring a data-driven approach to defining environmental suitability. Variables' weights were derived from the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based on expert judgment and then combined with scores to generate suitability maps for managing Blue-NBS on seagrasses. Depth was found to be the most dominant environmental variable, with shallow areas (e.g., Northern Adriatic, Gulf of Gabés) showing higher suitability. The southern part of the Mediterranean (e.g., Egypt) reported relatively low scores for both climate and WQ, while the Northern Adriatic had the lowest WQ scores. This study represents the first attempt to evaluate Blue-NBS suitability for seagrass meadows at the eco-regional scale with geomorphologic, WQ, and climatic variables, providing decision support for the selection and allocation of Blue-NBS in different environmental settings. However, food loss and waste are a major challenge when adopting food security and sustainability strategies, since a large proportion of food is lost or wasted along the food supply chain. In order to use resources efficiently and enhance food security and sustainability, food waste and by-products must be reduced and properly valorized. Plant-based food production generates various by-products which are generally rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds. Emerging technologies have been effectively employed to extract these valuable compounds with health benefits. Recently, Industry 4.0 technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain, robotics, smart sensors, 3D printing, and digital twins have a great deal of potential for waste reduction and by-products valorization in food industry. Urban biodiversity faces threats from habitat loss, landscape fragmentation, and human disturbances. Ecological networks (ENs) can enhance habitat connectivity and bolster population resilience to disruptions. To safeguard the biodiversity of Nanjing's urban area, this study selected understory insectivorous birds as indicator species for biodiversity, employing a comprehensive approach integrating the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model and the area threshold method to delineate ecological source areas. Key indicators directly linked to the species distribution were extracted based on the habitat suitability assessment results, and an ecological resistance surface was crafted using spatial principal component analysis. Subsequently, the circuit theory model was applied to pinpoint ecological corridors, pinch points, and barrier points. The findings unveiled the following: (1) The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), human activities (HA), and canopy height (CH) were critical indicators influencing biodiversity. The response curves of the NDVI and CH were positively correlated with the probability distribution of indicator species, while the response curve of the HA showed an overall negative correlation with the same distribution. (2) The spatial distribution characteristics of the ecological network revealed a 'one axis, two cores, intersecting' pattern. Ecological sources were supported by mountainous forests and riverside green spaces, symmetrically distributed on both sides of the Yangtze River. Ecological corridors were forming continuous tree belts along highways and riverways, predominantly concentrated on the eastern side of the Yangtze River. Ecological pinch points and barriers were primarily located at the intersections of fragmented green spaces and developed areas in the northeastern and southeastern regions of the study area. (3) This study finally identified 30 ecological source areas, 65 ecological corridors, 8 pinch points, and 8 barrier points. Constructing bird habitat networks (BHNs) is crucial for maintaining the health and service equilibrium of urban ecosystems, especially in large metropolitan areas where the pressure of urbanization is intense. However, most existing BHNs fail to account for the dynamic changes and unique requirements of local species, leading to homogenized construction outcomes and ecological corridor objectives. This study employs a comprehensive approach to identify bird habitat patches using multiple high-quality sources, then utilize circuit theory and complex network theory to construct and assess the resilience of BHN. Our key findings showed: (1)93 bird habitat sources were identified, predominantly situated in the continuous green spaces of southern and southeastern Shanghai, whereas habitat sources in the city center and other densely built-up areas are more dispersed, highlighting them as prime targets for future ecological restoration efforts. (2) The distribution of bird habitat corridors exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity, with primary corridors predominantly spanning the southwestern and eastern parts of the study area, while secondary corridors are more abundant in the western and northern parts, forming a denser network, whereas the central area shows fewer and more isolated corridors. (3) The decline in structural and functional resilience was notably more rapid under targeted attacks than under random attacks, underscoring the need to prioritize crucial bird habitat sources on the city's periphery, especially near highly urbanized areas, in urban planning and biodiversity conservation efforts to sustain ecological balance and biodiversity. This study explores how globalization influences the relationship between institutional quality and the ecological footprint in Africa. Utilizing dynamic panel threshold models with data from 49 African countries (2002-2022), we investigate how different types of globalization-economic, social, cultural, and political-affect this relationship. Our findings reveal that the impact of institutional quality on the ecological footprint varies significantly depending on globalization thresholds. Specifically, below certain thresholds, improved institutional quality increases the ecological footprint, whereas above these thresholds, it tends to reduce it. For economic globalization, the threshold is 53.510; for social globalization, 48.332; for cultural globalization, 28.446; and for political globalization, 69.663. These results highlight the need for targeted environmental policies that consider the specific effects of each globalization dimension to effectively manage Africa's ecological footprint. In today's world, agriculture is not only about food production but also a critical factor in global environmental change, economic stability, and human health, among other aspects. With population growth and increasingly scarce resources, exploring sustainable development of food systems has become crucial. Achieving this goal requires striking a delicate balance among food security, economic development, ecological environment, and human health. Traditional approaches to sustainable agricultural development research often focus solely on singular domains, overlooking the inherent connections and interactions among environmental, socioeconomic, and health dimensions. This perspective limits our comprehensive understanding of food systems. Environmental footprint assessments can be integrated with economic, systemic, and decision models to analyze environmental, socioeconomic, and health issues within food systems. This integration accurately captures the diversity, overlap, accumulation, and heterogeneity of environmental pressures resulting from human and natural factors. Therefore, we propose an innovative conceptual framework that considers environmental, socioeconomic, and health dimensions as crucial components, with the environmental footprint indicators at its core, to link various stages from farm to table. This framework constructs an evidence gap map, integrating dispersed data and perspectives from existing literature, thus showing knowledge gaps across these domains. Such an interdisciplinary approach not only provides a more comprehensive perspective on the multidimensional complexity of sustainable food systems but also reveals potential synergies and conflicts among environmental, socioeconomic, and health domains, thereby guiding more comprehensive and cautious policy-making. Importantly, it provides direction for future research to achieve the sustainable development of food systems, emphasizing the necessity of a comprehensive, integrated research perspective, particularly in strengthening studies on composited footprints, viewing the entire farm-to-table continuum holistically. River habitats are fragmented by barriers which impede the movement and dispersal of aquatic organisms. Restoring habitat connectivity is a primary objective of nature conservation plans with multiple efforts to strategically restore connectivity at local, regional, and global scales. However, current approaches to prioritize connectivity restoration do not typically consider how barriers spatially fragment species' populations. Additionally, we lack knowledge on biodiversity baselines to predict which species would find suitable habitat after restoring connectivity. In this paper, we asked how neglecting these biodiversity baselines in river barrier removals impacts priority setting for conservation planning. We applied a novel modelling approach combining predictions of species distributions with network connectivity models to prioritize conservation actions in rivers of the Rhine-Aare system in Switzerland. Our results show that the high number and density of barriers has reduced structural and functional connectivity across representative catchments within the system. We show that fragmentation decreases habitat suitability for species and that using expected distributions as biodiversity baselines significantly affects priority settings for connectivity restorations compared to species-agnostic metrics based on river length. This indicates that priorities for barrier removals are ranked higher within the expected distributions of species to maximize functional connectivity while barriers in unsuitable regions are given lower importance scores. Data scarcity hinders global conservation initiatives, and there is a pressing demand for spatially detailed soil and species data to restore human-altered tropical forests. We, therefore, aimed to generate foundational soil environment and habitat suitability data and high-resolution soil maps to aid restoration efforts in a critical ecosystem of the threatened Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot region, i.e., Tarap Hill Reserve (THR) in Bangladesh. Using multiple soil depths and vegetation data, we answered three major questions. (QI) How do spatial distribution and the relationships between soil physicochemical properties (i.e., pH, sand, silt, and clay percentages, organic carbon, and nutrients - N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn) vary from surface to deeper soils (top 1 m)? (QII) How do different forest management interventions, i.e., old-growth forests (OGF), mixed plantations (MXP), and mono-specific plantations (MOP), influence soil properties, nutrients, and carbon in different soil depths? (QIII) Which spatial interpolation methods are best suited for making more accurate soil property predictions at different depths? Our analyses reveal decreasing availability of critical nutrients like N, P, Mg, and Fe from surface to subsurface soils, while pH, soil organic carbon, and clay content increased with depth. Several soil properties showed significant interactions, although the strength of the interactions changed from surface to deeper soils. Besides, forest management interventions significantly influenced soil functionality by having higher nutrient availability and soil organic carbon in OGF than MXP and MOP. Predictive performances of the deterministic and geostatistical interpolation methods varied for different soil properties in different soil depths, and soil maps revealed substantial heterogeneity in the distribution of soil properties across space and along depths. Large trees are essential for carbon storage and biodiversity conservation. While an increasing number of studies have focused on large trees in primary forests, little is known about them in secondary and planted forests. We surveyed 86,936 trees in secondary forests and 91,294 trees in planted forests in Zhejiang, China, to investigate the distribution patterns and determinants of large trees in these forests. We found a mean density of large trees (DBH ≥ 30 cm) of 15 ± 13 stems ha -1 in secondary forests and 11 ± 9 stems ha -1 in planted forests. Moreover, the mean density of trees with DBH ≥ 60 cm was 0.36 stems ha -1 , indicating that large trees are particularly rare in secondary and planted forests. These large trees were primarily occurred in secondary forests that living in high-elevation area with less human exploitation and colder and wetter climates, and in planted forests with higher species richness and lower tree density. In addition, the density of large trees in these forests significantly increased with tree species richness and decreased with increasing tree density. These results indicate that the sparse large trees were the legacy of historical human activities in the studied area, but currently, the development of large trees is still limited by the improper forest structure characterized by low species diversity and high tree density. A marine heatwave (MHW) is an atypical and relatively short period of warmer Sea Surface Temperature (SST) which may be disruptive to marine life. Changes brought about by MHWs can reshape marine ecosystems in ways that have an economic impact on their users. MHWs are expected to become more frequent, longer, and more intense due to anthropogenic climate change. We leverage high-resolution SST data, and spatially and temporally detailed fish catch data, for an analysis of the impact of MHW events on fish catch in Aotearoa New Zealand's large marine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). We use Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression to assess the spatially heterogenous impact of MHWs on fish catch across different areas within the EEZ. We find that moderate MHWs correlate with increased fish catches; but, as the intensity of MHWs increase, their impact becomes predominantly negative. Intense MHWs are associated with substantial decreases in fish catch, suggesting significant disruptions to fish populations and their habitats. This pattern underscores the vulnerability of marine ecosystems and consequently commercial fisheries to the increasing frequency and severity of MHWs caused by climate change. With complex topography and geomorphology, mountainous cities possess abundant natural resources. They are constrained by ecological environment and topographic conditions, leading to a prominent contradiction between urbanization development and ecological protection. As a result, ecosystem services (ESs) are under greater regulatory pressure. The identification of ecosystem services bundles (ESBs) can be the foundation for developing zonal ecological protection planning policies. We took Chongqing as a case study, investigated the impact mechanisms of socio-ecological factors on the level of ES supply in each ESB. The findings reveal that: (1) The quantitative assessment of ESs for 2000, 2010, and 2020 showed that ESs were temporally stable and spatially heterogeneous. Areas with high supplies of food production (FP) and water yield (WY) were predominantly found in the northwestern cropland and urban built-up regions, whereas high supply areas for the other four ESs were primarily located in the northeastern Dabashan Mountains and the southern Wuling Mountains. (2) The quantification of trade-offs and synergies between ESs showed that FP had a trade-off effect with all five other ESs, while most other ES pairs exhibited synergistic effects. It was found that the interrelationships produced changes over time. (3) Then, three types of ESBs were identified. After examining the influence mechanisms of socio-ecological factors across the three ESBs, individual ESs were found to have essentially the same types of main impact factors in three ESBs, but varies in impact. Vegetation restoration is an effective and important measure for controlling soil erosion in arid and -arid regions. Both its aboveground and underground parts play a crucial role in controlling surface runoff and soil detachment on slopes. But how much the parts of vegetation contribute to the runoff and sediment reducing benefits of rill erosion on slopes is unclear. We used grassland slopes at four successional stages for simulated scouring experiments to observe how successional vegetation community structures, root characteristics, and soil structures contribute to erosion and sand production. Initial flow production time increased, and total runoff decreased. Under the scour intensities, the 11-year slope had the lowest flood peak and volume and the greatest runoff reduction benefit. The 25-year slope had the lowest sand peak and volume and the greatest sediment reduction benefit. As scour intensity increased, runoff reduction effect of vegetation at the successional stages decreased; the sediment reduction benefit remained high. PLS-PM analysis showed that the indirect effects of the aboveground and underground parts of vegetation on sand production were -0.364 and -0.439, respectively. Aboveground parts mainly embodied the regulation of runoff, in which stem count, humus mass, and biomass were the main factors affecting runoff and sand production. Underground parts mainly reflected their soil structure improvement, in which root volume density, root surface area density, and root mass density are the main explanatory variables. The direct effects of runoff and soil structure on slope rill erosion were 0.330 and -0.616, respectively, suggesting the stability of soil structure is the primary factor affecting the sand production, not erosion energy. The latest report from the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) raises concerns about the global proliferation of non-native species (NIS) driven by increasing temperatures. In 2023, the invasive blue crab Callinectes sapidus experienced a significant range expansion in the French Mediterranean lagoons, now present in over 20 lagoons and numerous estuaries with different invasion gradients. It has been established that this species is eurytherm (tolerates a wide range of temperatures; 0-40 °C), rendering temperature a non-limiting factor for its proliferation. On the other hand, salinity is a critical factor to consider, as C. sapidus requires brackish water for copulation and saline water for egg maturation. In this study, we present the salinity tolerance of C. sapidus using the metabolic performance to define the tolerance of the species to a large range of salinities (13 levels from 0 to 65 psu). Results showed that C. sapidus tolerates a large range of salinities with a minimum critical threshold (CT min ) at 0 psu, an optimum at 18.5 psu, and a CT max at 62.4 psu. Using the performance curve equation, we applied the curve to real salinity data measured each month in 2023 in 20 lagoons invaded. Using this approach, we were able to map, on a fine spatial scale, the distribution of suitable habitats for C. sapidus in the year 2023. Additionally, we have developed a tool to prioritize the lagoons based on their suitability, thereby providing a decision-making framework for management measures in each lagoon. It emerged that 50 % of lagoons were priority areas, 10 % were intermediate and 40 % required monitoring. The rise in fish and seafood consumption driven by aquaculture comes with its share of challenges and controversies, notably the need for expanded feed production. The use of fishmeal and fish oil to raise carnivorous fish has caused environmental problems, including ecosystem imbalance and habitat destruction, as well as ethical issues like fishing forage fish for feed instead of human consumption. Thus, the industry has been actively pursuing alternative feed ingredients to reduce reliance on fish-derived components. This progress in the aquaculture feed sector has made selecting the best feed solution complex across various fronts. This study aims to assess the environmental impacts of three feed formulations, each with different protein sources (poultry by-products, PMB, Tenebrio molitor larvae, TM, or Hermetia illucens larvae, HI), tailored for the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), a prized species in European aquaculture. The environmental sustainability of these alternatives was evaluated against benchmarks of fishmeal and fish oil-based feed. Employing a cradle-to-gate approach and a FU of 1 kg of product, the study utilized OpenLCA software supported by the Ecoinvent ® v3.7.1 database. The results focused on the production stages of each ingredient, including logistical and transportation aspects leading up to the final formulation. All alternatives to traditional feed demonstrated either comparable or superior environmental performance (i.e. - 66 % of PMB-f, -33 % of TM-f and - 29 % HI-f kgCO 2 eq) with few exceptions for TM-f. This investigation highlighted how integrating innovative ingredients could positively impact the environmental footprint of aquafeed production chains. Furthermore, the main hotspots in the alternative feed formulas life cycles have been identified and viable alternatives for improvement have been proposed, such as selecting different input materials or enhancing energy efficiency. The global degradation of natural coral reefs requires innovative approaches to their conservation and restoration. This study investigates the efficacy of using parametric design tools in 3D software and 3D-printed terracotta structures in artificial reef (AR) design. Three ARs were deployed in the northern Gulf of Aqaba in 2019. Seven months post-deployment the ARs were consolidated to one location. Consecutive monitoring, conducted from June 2019 to March 2022, examined the recruitment and settlement of fish, corals, and other marine organisms on the ARs. The ARs hosted complex communities, with fish populations reaching equilibrium approximately one year after deployment. Octocorallia were first observed 4.5 months post-deployment, and hexacorallia 5.5 months post-deployment, with neither reaching a steady state within the study period. Additionally, we found that combining dispersed AR units into a single complex significantly increased fish abundance, but did not affect species richness. This study employs an improved Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) model to calculate the Net Primary Productivity (NPP) of Spartina alterniflora (SA) and various other land use/land cover types (LULC) across coastal China over multiple years. The research aims to provide significant theoretical and practical insights into carbon sink research in coastal zones, sustainable development, and resource management. Key findings include identifying the first ε max value of 2.219 g C/MJ for SA, addressing a critical data gap in CASA modeling research on invasive plants. SA's NPP exhibited higher values in Shanghai and Zhejiang due to factors such as genetic diversity, invasion duration, and tidal dynamics. In contrast, other LULC exhibited higher NPP values in southern and inland regions, characterized by greater vegetation cover and favorable growing conditions. In 2020, SA and other LULC sequestered 16.352 kt C and 0.821*10 6 kt C, respectively. From 2000 to 2020, the average annual NPP and total carbon storage of SA and other LULC increased significantly, primarily driven by Shanghai and deciduous needleleaf forests, respectively. Seasonal NPP trends followed summer> spring> autumn> winter, influenced by climate conditions and plant life activities. Economic assessments in 2020 estimated SA's carbon storage value at RMB0.409 billion (Market Value method) or RMB5.562 billion (Carbon Tax method), with RMB2.054 billion attributed to oxygen release values, underscoring its economic and ecological potential. Among other LULC, evergreen broadleaf forests showed the highest carbon storage value (RMB183.463 billion). The study emphasizes the critical role of all LULC in carbon storage and oxygen release, advocating for targeted conservation and land management strategies. China has made enormous strides to achieve high-quality development and biodiversity conservation, and the establishment of nature-protected areas is one of the essential initiatives. Caizi Lake involves a natural reserve and two national wetland parks, accommodating winter migratory waterfowl over the middle and lower Yangtze River basin in China. However, the water transfer from the Yangtze River to the Huai River (YR-HR water transfer) has modified the winter hydrological conditions of Caizi Lake, negatively affecting wintertime waterfowl habitats. Hence, conserving wintertime waterfowl habitats necessitates knowledge of the dynamical mechanisms behind the impacts of YR-HR water transfer on wintertime waterfowl habitats and adaptive measures. Here we developed a machine learning model, the normalized difference vegetation index, and on-spot observatory datasets such as the spatial distribution of waterfowl species and underwater topography of Caizi Lake. We found that the rising winter water level of Caizi Lake encroaches on winter waterfowl habitat with extremely high suitability. Meanwhile, rising water levels reduced waterfowl food sources. Thus, rising water levels due to YR-HR water transfer deteriorated waterfowl living conditions over Caizi Lake. Therefore, we proposed adaptive measures to alleviate these negative effects, such as water level regulation, artificial feeding of waterfowls, restoration and reconstruction of contiguous mudflats, grass flats. Understanding recovery times and mechanisms of ecosystem dynamics towards the old-growth stage is crucial for forest restoration, but still poorly delineated in Mediterranean. Through tree-ring methods, we reconstructed the return of a tall canopy after severe human disturbance in a mixed beech (Fagus sylvatica) and silver fir (Abies alba) forest, located at a mountain site in the southern edge of both species' range (Gariglione, south Italy). The primary forest was extensively harvested between 1930 and 1950, removing up to 91 % of the biomass. Growth histories, climate-growth relationships and time-series of growth dominance in Gariglione were compared with a network of protected mature and old-growth beech forests distributed along a wide elevational gradient in the same region. We found that the renewed tall canopy of Gariglione is mainly composed of remnant trees, which include uncut trees and saplings, and the post-harvesting regeneration mostly represented by fir. Canopy beech trees reached maximum basal area increment (BAI) in the 1970s, 40-50 years after cutting. Then, beech BAI shifted towards negative trends in phase with drying climate (PDSI), while fir maintained a sustained growth until 2000. This growth asynchrony between the two species conferred community stability over the last decades. The network comparison highlighted the common negative impact of summer drought on high-frequency growth signals of beech in south Italy. However, analysis of long-term mean growth trends indicates decreasing BAI limited to Gariglione beech, revealing relevant differences due to site ecology and its interactions with legacy effects of past management in driving growth responses to climate change. Indeed, lowland mature beech forests showed increasing BAI in the last decades, while primary high-mountain forests displayed a remarkably stable low oscillating growth. The escalating challenges posed by seafood waste generated by the fishing and aquaculture industries underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions that promote both environmental conservation and economic viability within the seafood sector. Seafood waste biorefinery emerges as a promising solution, offering the potential to transform waste materials into valuable products. However, it is essential to recognize that seafood waste biorefinery operations also entail environmental impacts that warrant careful consideration. Environmental assessment tools like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provide a valuable framework for assessing these impacts comprehensively. This review critically examines LCA studies in seafood waste biorefinery, focusing on key concepts, emerging technologies, and potential product avenues. Despite the growing body of research in this area, direct comparisons between published studies prove challenging due to discrepancies in feedstocks, processing techniques, value-added products, and LCA methodologies. Nevertheless, the findings consistently demonstrate significant reductions in environmental impacts achieved through seafood waste biorefinery processes. The selection of technologies significantly influences both product quality and sustainability measures. High energy consumption, including diesel fuel consumption in fishing vessels and electricity consumption in processing steps, should be carefully considered and reduced to mitigate associated environmental impacts. In conclusion, while seafood waste biorefinery processes hold significant promise for providing environmental and economic benefits, substantial challenges remain. Restoration measures have been widely implemented in wetland ecosystems globally to bend the curve of biodiversity loss and restore associated ecological functions. However, assessments of the effectiveness of wetland restoration have predominantly focused on the recovery of taxonomic composition, while few studies have assessed the effectiveness of these efforts from a food web perspective. Here, we incorporated stable isotope approach to investigate trophic structure in natural and restored wetlands in Northeast China. The investigated consumers, including zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and fish, exhibited lower δ 15 N and higher δ 13 C values in restored wetlands than in natural wetlands. Natural wetlands exhibited higher trophic positions and a wider range of trophic levels compared to restored wetlands. Primary consumers in natural wetlands relied more on particulate organic matter (POM, 42.9 % ± 24.1 %), while those in restored wetlands were more dependent on substrate organic matter (SOM, 42.3 % ± 23.9 %). Compared to natural wetlands, isotopic richness was significantly lower in restored wetlands, with smaller isotopic variation (SEAs) in basal resources, aquatic invertebrates, and fish. Our findings reveal that the recovery of trophic structures in restored wetlands lags behind that of taxonomic composition. Future restoration efforts should prioritize enhancing habitat heterogeneity and resource availability to support a diverse range of trophic levels. Japan's unique demographic trajectory, marked by population decline and aging, coupled with continued urbanization, presents distinct challenges for aligning built environment capacity with resource efficiency. This study aims to investigate the historical evolution and project future scenarios of building material stock (MS) and their spatial distribution across Japan's three major metropolitan areas. Through a comprehensive material flow and stock analysis, the historical accumulation of building materials from 2009 to 2020 was quantified, revealing a dominance of concrete and an increasing overall stock. The contributions of various driving factors to changes in construction areas were explored, identifying population dynamics as the predominant influence. Leveraging shared socioeconomic pathway scenarios (SSPs), this research forecasted building floor area and MS until 2050 under five distinct SSPs. The results indicated an overall reduction across all scenarios, yet with a continued concentration in high-density urban cores. The substantial gap between the highest and lowest projected MS scenarios highlighted opportunities for material conservation and emission reductions through sustainable practices. Sustainable urban development in densely populated regions necessitates a balance between infrastructure provision and environmental conservation, while in sparsely populated areas, the focus shifts to the efficient management and utilization of vacant properties and materials to cope with the impacts of significant population declines. Conflicts arising from human-wildlife interactions (HWIs) pose a significant challenge in communities neighboring Nyerere National Park. To achieve long-term conservation success, it is critical to understand and resolve complex social conflicts. Currently, most attention is focused on addressing dispute-related conflicts, whereas underlying, and identity-based conflicts are understudied, resulting in inadequate information in literature regarding underlying and identity-based conflicts that drive social conflicts. Through the use of the Conservation Conflict Transformation Model (CCT), this study aimed to identify existing conflicts across three levels of conflict and assess current intervention strategies employed within the study area. Based on data collected from 324 respondents through questionnaire surveys, the study revealed that the dispute level of conflicts was lower than the underlying and identity-based levels of conflicts, emphasizing the limited scope of addressing conflicts solely at the dispute level within the context of conflicts arising from HWIs. To alleviate conflicts at the dispute level, respondents employed both lethal and non-lethal control techniques, with a preference for non-lethal methods. Additionally, socio-demographic factors including age, gender, household size, respondent's attitude towards wildlife, and residence significantly influenced the implementation of intervention strategies (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the findings revealed that respondents faced several challenges, including a lengthy incident reporting process for conflicts arising from HWIs, lack of consolation payment for damages, exclusionary practices, and lack of transparency in seeking assistance from local, wildlife, and government authorities. Overall, the study recommends adopting and implementing a holistic approach aligned with the CCT model to effectively address conflicts under HWIs. Plant recovery plays a vital role in reclaiming bioresources from constructed wetland wastewater treatment systems. A comprehensive understanding of the environmental impacts and economic benefits associated with various wetland plant resourcing methods is critical for advancing both plant resource recovery and the application of wetlands in wastewater treatment. In this study, life cycle assessment was employed to evaluate the environmental impacts and costs of seven wetland plant recovery methods. In addition, the potential benefits of extending plant resource recovery within system boundaries were explored to enhance the overall advantages of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. The use of wetland plants for biofertilizer production had the lowest environmental impact (-8.52E-03), whereas the use of wetland plants for biochar production was the most cost-effective approach (-0.80€/kg). The introduction of a plant resource recovery component could significantly reduce the environmental impacts of constructed wetland wastewater treatment systems. The environmental impacts and costs of constructed wetland wastewater treatment systems that incorporate plant resource recovery into the system boundary are better than activated sludge methods and highly efficient algal ponds, except for the global warming potential (GWP). The use of plants for biofertilizer production could cut the environmental impacts of constructed wetland wastewater treatment systems by up to 85 % and the costs by 65 %, making it the most suitable method of plant use. Additionally, prioritizing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from constructed wetlands should be a primary optimization goal. Wood is increasingly being appreciated in construction due to its valuable environmental attributes. This paper explores the environmental and market performance of two wood supply chains in Northern Italy. Larch and chestnut wood are extracted and processed to obtain beams, planks, MDF panels and energy. LCA is performed to evaluate the environmental impacts of 1m 3 of extracted wood through a cradle-to-gate approach. Then, a biogenic carbon analysis is carried out using the EN 16449:2014 standard including a comparison of different end-of-life treatments. Also, OSB is proposed as an alternative path for wood chips and contrasted to the current energy scenario. Moreover, solid wood beams and planks are compared with engineered wood products (EWPs). Lastly, a market analysis is conducted to assess the market trends of the different wood products studied. The LCA shows similar results for both wood species across most impact categories, with slightly higher values for the chestnut system. Most impacts are related to the production of MDF boards and the energy valorization of wood chips. Biogenic carbon analysis shows a negative balance of emissions with -314 and -205 kg of CO 2 eq for larch and chestnut, respectively. It also suggests that OSB manufacturing can be a valuable alternative to the energy use of wood chips and that the end-of-life treatment with better results is recycling. The comparison of beams and planks with engineered wood products supports that solid wood poses a better environmental alternative in similar applications. Market analysis shows stagnation in the apparent consumption of wood products in the European market and a slight growth in the Italian one between 2018 and 2022. Offshore ocean aquaculture is expanding globally to meet the growing demand for sustainable food production. At the United Kingdom's largest longline mussel farm, we assessed the potential for the farm to improve the habitat suitability for commercially important crustaceans. Modelled distribution patterns (GAM & GLM) predicted the low complexity seabed beneath the mussel farm was 34-94 % less suitable for European lobster (Homarus gammarus) and brown crab (Cancer pagurus) than nearby rocky reefs. The mussel farm operations, however, contributed large amounts of living mussels and shell material to the seabed. Acoustic telemetry revealed that H.gammarus remained within the farm for between 2 and 283 days using both the farm anchors and areas of seabed dominated by fallen mussels for refuge. In contrast, C. pagurus movements showed no affinity to either the farm infrastructure or benthic habitat under the farm. Stable isotope analysis indicated a high dietary niche overlap in C. pagurus and H. gammarus (67.8 and 84.6 %) between the mussel farm (mixed muddy sediment) and nearby rocky reef. Our mixed-methods suggest that the mussel farm augments structural complexity on the seabed providing refuge and similar feeding opportunities for lobster and crab as their typical habitat on rocky reefs.
