Equitable access to urban green spaces (UGS) is an important component of social justice and can be quantified using indices such as urban green space accessibility (UGSA). However, the spatiotemporal patterns and inequity of UGSA among cities with different developments during rapid urbanization are unclear, especially lack evidence at a macroscopic national scale during rapid urbanization. Therefore, we evaluated the UGSA in 366 cities of China during 1990–2015 by the Gaussian-based two-step floating catchment area method (Gaussian-based 2SFCA). Then, the inequity pattern of UGSA among cities with different economic developments was analyzed by the concentration curve and concentration index. Finally, the relationship between UGSA and urban spatial expansion was explored quantitatively by the spatial econometric model. The results showed that: (1) The overall UGSA in China declined significantly by nearly 57.23% during 1990–2015. From the regional perspective, the UGSA in the southeastern region was always lower than that in the northwestern region, the Eastern zone presented a downward trend. From the perspective of different sizes cities, the UGSA of the megacities kept decreasing during 1990–2015, while UGSA of the large, medium, and small cities had turned to increase since 2010. (2) During rapid urbanization, the equity of UGSA among the cities gradually improved, while the cities with low economic developments tended to have higher UGSA. (3) Urban spatial expansion led to the decrease of UGSA during 1990–2015, while the impact had spatiotemporal heterogeneity, and UGSA had a positive spatial spillover effect. Our research provides a comparative baseline for the improvement of UGSA from a macroscopic perspective for China's urbanization policy in the future and novel insights into the green justice issue. The results can be compared with the development of UGS in other countries at different urbanization stages to promote UGS design and policy.

The formation of haloacetonitriles (HANs) during chlorination after sulfite/ultraviolet (UV) treatment of bromate (BrO3-) in the presence of amino acids (AAs) was investigated. During sulfite/UV treatment, the primary species hydrated electrons (eaq-) and hydrogen atom radicals (H) dominated the reduction of BrO3- to bromide (Br-), whereas the sulfite anion radicals (SO3-) and H degraded AAs to produce the intermediates HN=C(CH3)-COOH, CH3-CH=NH, and CH3-C≡N via α‑hydrogen abstraction and NH2-hydrogen abstraction mechanisms. During post-chlorination, Br- was converted to HBrO/BrO-, and the HN=C(CH3)-COOH, CH3-CH=NH, and CH3-C≡N groups featured higher bromine utilization factor (BUF) and chlorine utilization factor (CUF) values than AAs, enhancing the formation of dibromoacetonitrile (DBAN) and dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN). The main purpose of this study was to control membrane fouling by degrading natural organic matter, mainly based on free radicals, with a dead-end ultrafiltration system integrated with pretreatment. Four advanced oxidation processes, namely, ultraviolet (UV)/Fe(II), UV/persulfate (PS), Fe(II)/PS and UV/Fe(II)/PS, were used to pretreat raw water prior to ultrafiltration. The priority of the pretreatment effect followed the order of UV/Fe(II)/PS > Fe(II)/PS > UV/PS > UV/Fe(II). In the UV/Fe(II)/PS pretreatment (Fe(II) = 100 μM and PS = 400 μM), the removal rates of UV254 with a UV irradiation time of 60 min reached 93.07%. Degradation experiments of free-radical probes (carbamazepine) and free-radical scavenger addition (sodium hyposulfite or tert-butanol) showed that the sulfate radical (SO4− ) was dominant in degrading organic compounds. The specific flow rate (J/J0) increased by 139.13% and the irreversible fouling resistance was reduced by 69.94%. The total interfacial energy of the colloid-membrane interaction decreased by 84.42% and the separation distance was shortened to ~2 nm. The release of Fe(III) from water under UV radiation and its possible conversion to Fe(II) were observed on the surface of the fouled membranes. After UV/Fe(II)/PS pretreatment, bulky and rough pollutant particles were transformed into a slew of sheet-contaminated layer with the appearance of numerous permeable holes, and the average surface roughness was reduced to 38.1 nm according to atomic-force-microscopy characterization.

Soluble microbial products (SMPs), as precursors of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in water treatment, are composed of polysaccharides, humic acid, proteins and DNA, and have caused widespread concerned. Pyrimidine bases (cytosine and thymine) are significant nitrogenous constituents of DNA, which could pose an adverse impact on water quality during chlorination. This study focused on the correlation between relative reactivity, formation of DBPs and combined toxicity in the chlorination of a binary pyrimidine base mixture. The relative reactivities of cytosine and thymine were quite different at a low disinfectant concentration; cytosine reacted more actively with chlorine than thymine did, at the chlorine/total pyrimidine bases molar ratio = 10. The chlorination of binary pyrimidine bases can produce both carbonous DBPs (C-DBPs) and nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs). In particular, the total yields of trichloromethane (TCM) and trichloronitromethane (TCNM) were lower than the additive yields of monadic cytosine and monadic thymine (“monadic” refers to “separate”), whereas the total yields of haloacetic acids (HAAs) and haloacetonitriles (HANs) were promoted evidently. High reactivity of cytosine with chlorine, greater potential of cytosine to produce specific DBPs and the alkylation of transformation products of thymine may synthetically account for the diversity in total DBPs yields, especially the increased formation of HAAs and HANs. In our toxicity trial, even though the antagonistic effect predominated at fa > 0.4 (fa refers to the affected fraction), the synergism at low concentration levels could enhance the combined toxicity by promoting the yields of N-DBPs.

Microplastics (MPs) have attracted worldwide attention as the emerging persistent pollutants. Since they have been detected in raw water and the treated water of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), there was an urgent need to explore the properties and fates of microplastics in DWTPs. The characteristics of the effluent MPs from each treatment unit in an advanced drinking water treatment plant (ADWTP) were studied, and the relationship between the variations of MPs and the removal performances of treatment processes was also explored. Overall, both the coagulation combined with sedimentation and the granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration performed well in removing microplastics. The former had a removal efficiency of about 40.5–54.5%, mainly for fibres' removal, and the presence of GAC filtration reduced the microplastic abundance by about 56.8–60.9%, mainly for small-sized MPs. It was worthy of attention that a larger amount of polyacrylamide (PAM) was detected in the effluent of the sedimentation compared to raw water, which was caused by the usage of coagulant containing PAM. Specially, the number of 1–5 μm MPs in the effluent of ozonation tank was increased by 2.8–16.0%, resulting in a negative removal efficiency in ozonation. The removals of microplastics were depended primarily on their physical properties (size and shape).
