Herein, we have synthesized an Al-Zr-oligosaccharides tanning agent via a simultaneous degradation and oxidation of cellulose in waste paper. The influence of the temperature and the concentrations of AlCl3 and H2O2 during the synthesis were thoroughly investigated on the properties of the tanning agent and the leather produced. The synthesis temperature and the concentration of AlCl3 were the factors primarily affecting the effective depolymerization of cellulose. They controlled the conversion of waste paper into oligosaccharides with an appropriate molecular weight to efficiently penetrate the leather matrix. In parallel, the H2O2 concentration substantially influenced the tanning performance of the Al-Zr-oligosaccharides, diminishing the chromaticity of the tanning liquid via oxidation and promoting the conversion of C2/C3/C6-OH moieties into -CHO/-COOH. These functional groups increased the surface charge of the oligosaccharides allowing more effective coordination with Al/Zr, which facilitated the penetration of Al/Zr species into the leather matrix. Once inside the leather matrix, Al and Zr were released and reacted with the collagen fibers in leather, which resulted in effective leather tanning. The process optimization revealed that up to 57% of waste paper could be converted into a low-chromaticity (4350 AU) liquid hydrolysate with the synthesis conducted at 177 °C in a system comprising 47 mM AlCl3 and 5 vol% H2O2. The application of this liquid for tanning provided leather with a shrinkage temperature (86.5 °C) sufficiently high for commercial applications. These excellent results, combined with the intrinsic green nature of our approach, exemplify a step forward to simultaneously reduce pollution and hazards in leather industries giving a second life to waste paper., This work is financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (22078211). In areas with high exposure to pathogen contaminated water and lack the economic means for water treatment, low cost and convenient point-of-use drinking water disinfection materials/devices are essential. Using a simple craft paper making method, Fe3+-saturated montmorillonite impregnated filter paper was constructed to filter live Escherichia coli (E. coli)-spiked water. The Scanning Electron Microscopic images of the E. coli cells in contact with the Fe3+-saturated montmorillonite impregnated filter paper showed: 1) Fe3+-saturated montmorillonite particles were uniformly coated on the cellulose paper fiber, creating large mineral surface for cell contact; and 2) E. coli cell membrane was dehydrated and damaged, resulting cell deactivation upon contacting with the Fe3+-saturated montmorillonite particles impregnated in the paper. The E. coli cells passing through the Fe3+-saturated montmorillonite impregnated filter paper were not viable as further confirmed by the microfluidic dielectrophoresis analysis. They remained non-viable at room temperature even after 5 days, as shown by the results from both the Colony Counting test and the Colilert test. Currently, petroleum-based synthetic plastics are used as a key barrier material in the paper-based packaging of several food and nonfood goods. This widespread usage of plastic as a barrier lining is not only harmful to human and marine health, but it is also polluting the ecosystem. Researchers and food manufacturers are focused on biobased alternatives because of its numerous advantages, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and structural flexibility. When used alone or in composites/multilayers, these biobased alternatives provide strong barrier qualities against grease, oxygen, microbes, air, and water. According to the most recent literature reports, biobased polymers for barrier coatings are having difficulty breaking into the business. Technological breakthroughs in the field of bioplastic production and application are rapidly evolving, proffering new options for academics and industry to collaborate and develop sustainable packaging solutions. Existing techniques, such as multilayer coating of nanocomposites, can be improved further by designing them in a more systematic manner to attain the best barrier qualities. Modified nanocellulose, lignin nanoparticles, and bio-polyester are among the most promising future candidates for nanocomposite-based packaging films with high barrier qualities. In this review, the state-of-art and research advancements made in biobased polymeric alternatives such as paper and board barrier coating are summarized. Finally, the existing limitations and potential future development prospects for these biobased polymers as barrier materials are reviewed.

In this work, two pulps, bleached (BP) and raw pulp (RP), derived from the paper production process, were used as precursors of non-activated and activated carbons (ACs). In the case of non-ACs, the production involved either pyrolysis or pyrolysis followed by acid washing. For ACs production, the pulps were impregnated with K2CO3 or H3PO4, and then pyrolysed and acid washed. After production, the materials were physically and chemically characterized. Then, batch adsorption tests on the removal of two pharmaceuticals (the anti-epileptic carbamazepine (CBZ) and the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX)) from ultra-pure water and from Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluents were performed. In ultra-pure water, non-ACs were not able to adsorb CBZ or SMX while ACs showed good adsorption capacities. In WWTP effluents, although ACs satisfactorily adsorbed CBZ and SMX, they showed lower adsorption capacities for the latter. Tests with WWTP effluents revealed that the best adsorption capacities were achieved by carbons produced from BP and activated with H3PO4: 92 ± 19 mg g−1 for CBZ and 13.0 ± 0.6 mg g−1 for SMX. These results indicate the potential of paper pulps as precursors for ACs that can be applied in wastewater treatment.

The thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and paper waste was successfully operated with a 0% to 70% fraction of paper waste. The variation of functional microbial community was investigated by 16S rRNA gene analysis. The results indicated that the hydrolyzing bacterial community changed from carbohydrate/protein-degrading bacteria to cellulose-degrading bacteria when the paper waste ratio was higher than 50%. Significant changes in the taxon responsible for cellulose degradation were found depending on the paper waste fraction. Cellulose-degrading bacteria outcompeted lactic acid bacteria in the degradation of monosaccharide, resulting in a decline in the proportion of lactic acid bacteria and the absence of an accumulation of lactic acid. At high paper waste ratios, because the cellulose-degrading bacteria, such as Defluviitoga tunisiensis, were more likely to degrade monosaccharides directly to acetate and hydrogen rather than to propionate and butyrate, the abundance of syntrophs was reduced. The variation of those bacteria with high H2-producing ability significantly influenced the proportion of hydrogenotrophic archaea. The change in the microbial community as the paper waste fraction increased was illustrated with regard to anaerobic degradation steps.

Different types of pots and growing and casing media, including biodegradable materials, are used for plant and mushroom production. The fungus Peziza ostracoderma has gained attention for its visible growth on growing media for plants and casing media for mushrooms. Through a review of the literature we aim to evaluate whether exposure to fungi from recyclable pots and different growing and casing media occurs and causes occupational health effects. Based on the published papers, specific fungal species were not related to a specific medium. Thus P. ostracoderma has been found on paper pots, peat, sterilized soil, vermiculite, and rockwool with plants, and on peat, pumice, and paper casing for mushrooms. It has been found in high concentrations in the air in mushroom farms. Also Acremonium spp., Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, Athelia turficola, Aureobasidium pullulans, Chaetomium globosum, Chrysonilia sitophila, Cladosporium spp., Cryptostroma corticale, Lecanicillium aphanocladii, Sporothrix schenckii, Stachybotrys chartarum, and Trichoderma spp. have been found on different types of growing or casing media. Most of the fungi have also been found in the air in greenhouses, but the knowledge about airborne fungal species in mushroom farms is very limited. Eight publications describe cases of health effects associated directly with exposure to fungi from pots or growing or casing media. These include cases of hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by exposure to: A. fumigatus, A. niger, Au. pullulans, Cr. corticale, P. ostracoderma, and a mixture of fungi growing on different media. Different approaches have been used to avoid growth of saprophytes including: chemical fungicides, the formulation of biodegradable pots and growing media and types of peat. To increase the sustainability of growing media different types of media are tested for their use and with the present study we highlight the importance of also considering the occupational health of the growers who may be exposed to fungi from the media and pots.

In this paper we critically review the work "Assessing nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels as a contributing factor to coronavirus (COVID-19) fatality" (Ogen, 2020), stressing the fact that we think there are flaws in the published methodology. We do this as we think it is important, given the current deluge of 'COVID-19 related' publications, to clearly define what can be stated and what on the contrary, cannot be stated, due to limitations in terms of data quality and/or methodology.

Numerous products, such as moist wipes, are marketed worldwide as "flushable." Recent studies indicate that wipes cause operational problems (e.g., pipe blockages) in sewer systems. This study investigates potential reasons for why wipes are problematic in sewer operations. Physical characteristics, fiber compositions, and tensile properties of non-flushable wipes, flushable wipes, and toilet papers (TPs) were assessed. Flushables, non-flushables, and TPs, respectively, had sheet masses of 1.5, 1.5, 0.5 g; surface areas of 250, 300, and 120 cm(2) per sheet; thicknesses of 360, 370, and 160 mu m; and volumes of 9.2, 11, 1.9 cm(3) per sheet. While TPs were made of only plant-based fibers, wipes contained plant-based, and regenerated-cellulose (RC) fibers at various ratios, including up to 100% RC fibers. For tensile strength, the maximum force to break a specimen (F-max) averaged 3 N for dry TPs, and 0.26 N for wet TPs. In contrast, the average F-max values were 7 N for dry flushables and 5.9 N for their wet sheets. In wet states, TPs lost their strength by an average of 91%, but flushable wipes had variable changes: some wipes gained wet strength by 25%, some lost as much as 90%, and the average effect was a reduction by 29%. Thus, non woven wipes retain their strength and structure when wet, presumably because they contain RC fibers, which are known for their high wet strength. Accordingly, using synthetic fibers in flushable wipes seems to be the key reason for why the wipes cause operational problems in sewer systems. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper reveals the effect of calcium and magnesium ions in carbonation experiments carried out to regenerate sodium hydroxide from a biogas upgrading unit. This novel study arises as an alternative to standard physical process whose elevated energy consumption imposes economic restrictions. Previous works employed alkaline waste to turn them into value added product. Nevertheless, no attractive economical results were obtained due to the low regeneration efficiencies. Our hypothesis is that both calcium and magnesium waste composition percentages have an impact in the result, hence this work propose an isolated study aiming to determine the of each one in the global performance. To this end, the operational parameters (reaction time, reaction temperature and molar ratio) were tuned as well as physicochemical properties of the final solid samples were analyzed by several techniques. The results indicate that calcium is much more prone than magnesium to reach high efficiencies in aqueous carbonation experiments. Additionally, higher quality products were achieved with calcium. The results of this study suppose an important step for understanding the aqueous carbonation through waste in the path to achieve a more sustainable city and society.

The contribution of improperly disposed plastic wastes is globally evaluated at the level of 30% and these wastes make a particular threat to all living creatures. Thus, the evaluation of the possible impacts of plastic particles on the biotic part of ecosystems has become increasingly important in recent years. As a result, the growing number of publications concerning this subject has been observed since 2018. This paper aims to review the advances in studies on the effect of petroleum-derived plastic and bioplastic particles, taken together in the term (bio)plastics, on the terrestrial ecosystem, particularly on soil biota. It is the first review, in which both petroleum-derived plastics and bioplastics were analysed regarding their potential impacts on the soil compartment. Petroleum-derived plastics were more frequently studied than bioplastics and among analysed papers about 18% concern bioplastics. It was found that (bio)plastics did not affect the germination of seeds. However, they might contribute to the delay in germination processes. Both inhibitory and stimulating effects were observed in relation to the growth of roots and stems. (Bio)plastic microparticles did not inhibit the biochemical activity of nitrifiers and transformation of carbon compounds. Earthworms were predominantly used organisms to test the effect of petroleum-derived plastics on soil biota but there are hardly any data about bioplastics. Petroleum-derived microplastics present in soil at concentrations up to 1000 mg kg-1 usually neither cause to the mortality of earthworms nor affect their reproduction. Micro- and nanoparticles of petroleum-derived plastics could be accumulated in the earthworm intestine and transferred in the food chain. Summarizing, a high variability of results and often appearing lack of dose-dependence relationships hamper the final evaluation of the ecotoxicity of (bio)plastics simultaneously creating a need to develop the ecotoxicological studies on (bio)plastics, especially including these on the effect of bioplastics on soil animals.

In this work, the presence of 20 pharmaceuticals in wastewater from Colombia is investigated. Several widely consumed compounds have been detected in wastewater samples from different origins and geographical areas in Colombia. The studied pharmaceuticals included antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatories, cholesterol lowering statin drugs, lipid regulators, and anti-depressants. The investigated samples were urban wastewater collected during one whole week before (influent) and after treatment (effluent) in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of Bogotá and Medellin. Raw wastewater from the Hospital of Tumaco and from the city of Florencia were also collected. Analyses performed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) revealed that most of the target analytes were present in all the wastewater samples. The highest concentrations (up to 50 μg/L) corresponded to acetaminophen, but several antibiotics, such as azithromycin, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, and antihypertensive drugs, such as losartan and valsartan, were commonly present in influent wastewater (IWW) at levels above 1 μg/L. Moreover, the treatment applied in WWTPs seemed to not efficiently remove the compounds under study, because most pharmaceuticals were also present in effluent wastewater (EWW) at concentrations close to those of the IWW. Special emphasis was made in this work on the quality of data reported, performing a detailed study of quality control (QC) samples. The analytical approach used –direct injection of 5-fold diluted samples without any additional treatment – is simpler and faster than the commonly applied solid phase extraction (SPE). The use of 12 isotope-labelled internal standards ensured the satisfactory correction of matrix effects for the corresponding analytes. For the remaining 8 compounds, no drastic matrix effects were observed, and only four compounds (cloxacillin, doxycycline, losartan, tetracycline) presented QC recoveries near or slightly below 60%, revealing ionization suppression, particularly in the IWW. Data on the occurrence of pharmaceuticals reported in this paper are the basis for current studies that aim to develop efficient systems for the degradation/removal of these compounds from the aquatic environment. The shale gas flowback and produced water (FPW) from hydraulic fracturing in the Sichuan province of China has relatively low to moderate levels of total dissolved solids (20 g/L) and organics (50 mg/L of dissolved organic carbon). As such, a combined ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO) system can be successfully applied to desalinate this feed water with the goal of reuse. However, the concentration of influent organic matter and particulates in the UF and RO stage is high, and the overall ionic and organics composition is highly complex, so that the membrane processes do not perform well, also due to fouling. To ensure the long-term and efficient operation of the UF-RO stages, a combined pretreatment of the FPW with coagulation and adsorption was investigated. The effect of different parameters on the performance on the system was studied in detail. Overall, the coagulation-adsorption pre-treatment greatly reduced fouling of the membrane processes, thanks to the high removal rate of turbidity (98.8%) and dissolved organic carbon (86.3%). The adsorption of organic matter by powdered activated carbon was best described by the Freundlich equilibrium model, with a pseudo second-order model representing the adsorption kinetics. Also, the various ions had competitive removal rates during the adsorption step, a phenomenon reported for the first time for FPW treatment. Also, an optimal dose of activated carbon existed to maximize fouling reduction and effluent quality. The overall treatment system produced a high-quality water streams, suitable for reuse.

The addition of biodegradable carbon sources to sand filters can enhance microbial activity but may lead to substrate clogging, a major operational problem. In laboratory-scale soil columns emulating vertical up-flow filters, the clogging effect of two readily biodegradable organic substrates-sucrose as a sugar source and ethanol as an alcohol source-were examined with coarse sand as the substrate medium. Wastewater without the addition of supplemental organics and a 'control' treated with tap water were monitored as references. Changes in saturated hydraulic conductivity were measured for all treatments over time. Other parameters that can influence the clogging rate, including temperature, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, protein, and polysaccharides, were measured in the influent and effluent wastewater on a weekly basis. At the end of the clogging experiment, the main layer of each filter bed was separated into three sections and saturated hydraulic conductivity, organic matter content, and protein and polysaccharide concentrations were measured in each section. The rate of clogging development in the columns depended on treatment, with ethanol-treated cores clogging more quickly than sucrose-treated cores. Wastewater-treated cores took far longer to clog and the tap water control did not clog, but the saturated hydraulic conductivity declined by 60% over a year. Saturated hydraulic conductivity within the treated cores declined far less than the calculated decline in saturated hydraulic conductivities for the entire cores at the end of the experiment, indicating that clogging in the vicinity of the inlet plate by microbial mats was a major factor influencing the reduction in flow through the columns. To reduce bio-clogging in inlet filters, it may be advantageous to inject organic amendments directly into the bed, rather than pass them through the filters, as is usually the case.

Lignin modifying enzymes from fungi and bacteria are potential biocatalysts for sustainable mitigation of different potentially toxic pollutants in wastewater. Notably, the paper and pulp industry generates enormous amounts of wastewater containing high amounts of complex lignin-derived chlorinated phenolics and sulfonated pollutants. The presence of these compounds in wastewater is a critical issue from environmental and toxicological perspectives. Some chloro-phenols are harmful to the environment and human health, as they exert carcinogenic, mutagenic, cytotoxic, and endocrine-disrupting effects. In order to address these most urgent concerns, the use of oxidative lignin modifying enzymes for bioremediation has come into focus. These enzymes catalyze modification of phenolic and non-phenolic lignin-derived substances, and include laccase and a range of peroxidases, specifically lignin peroxidase (LiP), manganese peroxidase (MnP), versatile peroxidase (VP), and dye-decolorizing peroxidase (DyP). In this review, we explore the key pollutant-generating steps in paper and pulp processing, summarize the most recently reported toxicological effects of industrial lignin-derived phenolic compounds, especially chlorinated phenolic pollutants, and outline bioremediation approaches for pollutant mitigation in wastewater from this industry, emphasizing the oxidative catalytic potential of oxidative lignin modifying enzymes in this regard. We highlight other emerging biotechnical approaches, including phytobioremediation, bioaugmentation, Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-based technology, protein engineering, and degradation pathways prediction, that are currently gathering momentum for the mitigation of wastewater pollutants. Finally, we address current research needs and options for maximizing sustainable biobased and biocatalytic degradation of toxic industrial wastewater pollutants.

This paper presents an eco-efficiency analysis of five scenarios for treating a petrochemical unit effluent defined sequentially to increase the water reuse rate to the limit condition of Zero Liquid Discharge perspective. The base process, consisting of reverse osmosis, an evaporator and crystallizer, displayed pretreatment alternatives the addition of antifouling agents, desupersaturation of barium ions and coprecipitation of low solubility salts to increase osmosis efficiency. The eco-efficiency analysis applied the life cycle approach to verify environmental and energy performances and determined the costs of the treatment unit installation and operation for a time horizon of 9.5 years. The pretreatment increased water recovery during osmosis from 84% to over 97%. The environmental-energetic analysis indicated a strong influence of electric energy, consumed mainly during the thermal stages of the treatment, and of the chlorine-derived compounds used in the pretreatment. Also due to pre-treatment, it was possible to reduce impacts in terms of Global Warming Potential by up to 59%, and in Primary Energy Demand by 64% for the best scenario. The economic analysis depicted a significant influence of operating costs, and the electricity consumed in the processes is responsible for the largest share of expenses. The reuse water presented a cost ranging between US$ 1.08/m3 and US$ 1.80/m3. The systems with pretreatment by coprecipitation with Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3 and monoacids to adjust the pH of the final effluent showed to be more eco-efficient than the other options under analysis.

Fiber cement composites (FCCs) containing natural cellulosic fibres are emerging materials in the building industry. At the end of life, FCCs are often disposed of as part of the C&DW in a landfill. The production of landfill gasses in landfills needs to be kept as low as possible. Generally, leaching of total dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is used as a proxy for the biodegradability of a waste material and the subsequent production of landfill gasses, and is, therefore, used to evaluate biodegradability of waste. In this study, FCC samples with varying average diameter and varying age were subjected to both a batch leaching test (determine DOC leaching) and to a standardized biodegradability test. The batch leaching showed that the DOC leaching ranged between 520 and 1300 mg kg-1 for the tested samples, and that leaching of DOC decreases with increasing particle diameter and with increasing effects of ageing. Yet, the biodegradability results indicated that the leaching of DOC from FCCs does not result in the release of landfill gasses. This study hypothises that the DOC that leaches from the FCCs is being degraded to CO2, but that the formed CO2 is immediately captured by the material itself through the process of carbonation. An inpermeable layer is formed around the material that stops further leaching of DOC. Feasible reclamation of industrial wastewaters by consuming less resource and time requires researchers to develop advanced and sophisticated solutions to meet today's versatile needs. In this respect, novel technological applications of hybrid membrane oxidation reactor (MOR) comprising of the Fenton or photo-Fenton enhanced ultrafiltration (FEUF and pFEUF), was demonstrated for treating textile washing wastewater. Their comparative hybrid performances were explored based on response surface analyses of Taguchi experimental designs that were optimized for maximized responses at minimum oxidant and acid consumptions. From eleven specific variables, those affecting the hybrid treatment performances at significant levels were found as H2O2 amount, process time, membrane type, Fe2+ concentration and temperature. The pFEUF treatment showed better and faster organics removal efficiency than by FEUF, and the UF process was seen to be more affected from changing operational conditions in pFEUF. Organic pollutants were oxidized by 56.6 +/- 8.7% degradation and 31.5 +/- 3.2% mineralization, while UF allowed a synergistic contribution to the hybrid MOR performance by 38.1 +/- 4.7% and 17.3 +/- 3.1%, respectively. Compared to simultaneous MOR and external UF after Fenton, sequential MOR was found as the best solution by an efficiency of 84.5% COD, 70.5% TOC, and 155.6 L/m(2).h. The effluents could be readily produced with quality suitable for directly discharging to the sewage infrastructure system resulting in a complete treatment. This study proved that the developed MOR techniques are technologically favorable for the treatment of industrial organic wastewaters due to high treatment performances and less resource, time and land needs. It can be finally declared that they can be used as rather attractive solutions for not only wastewater reclamation but also water recovery by further handling of their effluents. In Mediterranean countries the table olive industry produces a huge volume of wastewaters that are phytotoxic due to their high sodium content. Olives intended for Spanish-style green olives are currently debittered with NaOH that generates lyes and washing waters that cannot be used for agronomic purposes. In this study, the substitution of NaOH with KOH during the debittering of Manzanilla and Hojiblanca cultivars was assessed as well as the vacuum evaporation of the olive wastewaters to comply with fertilizer requirements. Typical lactic acid fermentation occurred in brines of olives treated with KOH and a final product with similar color and flavor characteristics to those treated with NaOH was achieved. However, lower texture was found in olives debittered with KOH than those with NaOH, using them at the same molar concentration. Furthermore, the lyes and washing waters from the KOH treatment were concentrated up to 10% of their initial volume and they complied with Spanish requirements to be considered as organo-mineral fertilizers (Corganic > 4%, K2O > 2%, Ntotal + K20 > 6%) although an external source of nitrogen would be needed. They also had a high content in phenolic compounds, particularly hydroxytyrosol. The primary biological treatment method for organic sludge is composting and/or anaerobic digestion, but their product (compost or biogas) is of little economic benefit; therefore, an improved process to produce a high-value product is required to make sludge management more sustainable. Maximizing NH3 gas recovery during composting processes has the potential benefit of producing high-value microalgal biomass. However, the majority of produced ammonia does not evaporate as NH3 gas but retains as NH4+-N in the compost after fermentation. The present study investigates the effects of the timing of Ca(OH)2 dosing (on days 2, 5, and 9), and the Ca(OH)2 dose (1.1–2.6 mmol/batch), on lab-scale thermophilic composting of anaerobic sludge. The effects on NH3 recovery, organic matter degradability, and microbial activity are evaluated. Ca(OH)2 dosing immediately improved the emission of NH3, with yields 50–69% higher than those under control conditions. The timing of the dosing did not influence NH3 recovery or organic matter degradability. Higher Ca(OH)2 doses resulted in higher NH3 recovery, while microbial activity was temporarily and marginally inhibited. The pH of the compost reached 10–11.5 but quickly dropped to 8–8.5 within a day, probably because of neutralization of Ca(OH)2 by the emitted CO2 and release of NH3, which maintained the microbial activity. The present study indicated that Ca(OH)2 dosing would be useful to apply during thermophilic composting for NH3 recovery to cultivate high-value microalgal biomass, which enables this process to obtain a more economic benefit.

Herein a strategy for biogas upgrading in a continuous flow absorption unit using CaCl2 as capturing agent is reported. This process is presented as an alternative to the standard physical regeneration processes to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from biogas effluents with inherent high energy penalties. This work showcases a systematic study of the main parameters (reaction time, reaction temperature, and molar ratio reactant/precipitator) affecting calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation efficiency in a reaction between sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and CaCl2. In addition, the purity and main characteristics of the obtained product were carefully analysed via in a combined characterization study using Raman, XRD, and SEM. Our results indicate that acceptable precipitation efficiencies between 62 and 93% can be reached by fine tuning the studied parameters. The characterization techniques evidence pure CaCO3 in a calcite structure. These results confirmed the technical feasibility of this alternative biogas upgrading process through CaCO3 production.

Nitrogen (N) loads from municipal and mine wastewater discharges typically increase N concentrations in recipient water bodies which should get more attention especially in cold-climate regions. This study compared N removal efficiency of six constructed wetlands (CWs) treating mine waters and three CWs polishing municipal wastewater. There were clear impacts of point source N loading to recipient water bodies in all cases studied and >300-fold increase in N was seen in some cases. First-order N removal coefficient was determined for seven of these CWs. All CWs studied were observed to remove N efficiently during the warm growing season but the amount of N released increased significantly during the cold season. Although some year-round purification was achieved by both peat-based and pond-type CWs, removal of nitrate + nitrite-N ((NO3− + NO2−)-N) was low during winter. The first-order N removal coefficient varied from 4.9 · 10−6 to 1.9 · 10−3 d−1 and showed that peat-based CWs were slightly more efficient in N removal than pond-type CWs. However, purification efficiency was steadier and higher for pond-type CWs, as lower hydraulic load or longer water residence time compensated for purification performance. Pond-type CWs showed mean removal efficiency of 59% and 46% for ammonium-N (NH4+-N) and (NO3− + NO2−)-N, respectively, whereas peatland-type CWs had lower removal efficiency for NH4+-N (mean of 26%) and in many cases negative removal for (NO3− + NO2−)-N. Correlation analysis revealed no clear, systematic relationship between temperature and N removal. However, in some CWs the highest correlation was between temperature and (NO3− + NO2−)-N, reflecting lower denitrification rate at lower temperature. More than 50% removal was found to require a hydraulic load below 10 mm d−1. In order to achieve 70% of NH4+-N removal, Ntot load lower than 75 g m−2 year−1 and a residence time longer than 80 d are needed in CWs in cold-climate regions.

This study evaluated the process performance and determined the microbial community structure of two lab-scale thermophilic trickling biofilter reactors used for biological methanation of hydrogen and carbon-dioxide for a total period of 94 days. Stable and robust operation was achieved by means of a single-pass gas flow. The quality of the output gas (>97%) was comparable to the methane purity achieved by commercial biogas upgrading systems fulfilling the specifications to be used as substitute to natural gas. The reactors' methane productivity reached >1.7 LCH4/(LR·d) at hydrogen loading rate of 7.2 LH2/(LR·d). The spatial distribution of the microbial consortia localized in the liquid media and biofilm enabled us to gain a deeper understanding on how the microbiome is structured inside the trickling biofilter. Sequencing results revealed a significant predominance of Methanothermobacter sp. in the biofilm. Unknown members of the class Clostridia were highly abundant in biofilm and liquid media, while acetate utilising bacteria predominated in liquid samples.

Pesticide misuse incidents in residential indoor areas are typically associated with misapplications that are inconsistent with the label directions of the product. Surface wipe sampling and analysis procedures are relied upon to evaluate the extent of indoor contamination and the remediation efforts successfully. In general, surface wipe sampling procedures are widely varied, which can complicate the comparison of the results and data interpretation. Wipe sampling parameters were studied for the insecticides malathion and carbaryl. The parameters evaluated include wipe media, wetting solvents, composite sampling, surface concentration, and the influence of differing product formulations. Porous and nonporous surfaces tested include vinyl tile, plywood and painted drywall (porous/permeable) and stainless steel and glass (nonporous/impermeable). Specific wipe materials included pre-packaged sterile-cotton gauze, pre-cleaned cotton twill, cotton balls, and a pre-packaged, pre-wetted wipe. Commercially available insecticide formulations were tested, and the results were compared to surfaces fortified with neat analytes to determine surface recovery results (efficiency). A sampling procedure to measure pesticide residues was developed, and variables associated with the sampling methods were evaluated to clarify how estimations of surface residues are impacted. Malathion recoveries were 73-86% for twill and pre-wetted, pre-packaged isopropanol wipes on nonporous materials. Malathion formulations ranged from 78 to 124% for pre-wetted, pre-packaged isopropanol wipes and cotton gauze wipes on nonporous materials. Carbaryl and carbaryl formulation recoveries were 82-115% and 77-110%, respectively, on nonporous surfaces for all tested wipe materials. While not every wipe sampling variable could be tested, the collected information from this study may be useful and applied to sampling plans for classes of chemicals with similar physicochemical properties.

This study aims to enhance nitrogen removal efficiency of a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) by developing a new MBBR with zeolite powder-based polyurethane sponges as biocarriers (Z-MBBR). Results indicated the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) performance in Z-MBBR were nearly 10% higher than those in the conventional MBBR with sponges as biocarriers (S-MBBR). About 84.2 ± 4.8% of TN was removed in Z-MBBR compared to 75.1 ± 6.8% in S-MBBR. Correspondingly, the SND performance in Z-MBBR and S-MBBR was 90.7 ± 4.1% and 81.7 ± 6.5%, respectively. The amount of biofilm attached to new biocarriers (0.470 ± 0.131 g/g carrier) was 1.3 times more than that of sponge carriers (0.355 ± 0.099 g/g carrier). Based on the microelectrode measurements and microbial community analysis, more denitrifying bacteria existed in the Z-MBBR system, and this can improve the SND performance. Consequently, this new Z-MBBR can be a promising option for a hybrid treatment system to better nitrogen removal from wastewater.

Large quantities of hazardous activated petroleum waste sludge and wastewaters are generated from petroleum refining. The present disposal of the sludge via incineration or landfill may cause secondary pollution as well as additional costs. Treatment of petroleum refinery wastewater (PRW) by catalytic ozonation process (COP) remains a great challenge of developing low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts. Use of waste sludge derived biochar as catalysts in COP of PRW not only solves the solid wastes and wastewaters problems but also improves profitability. The elements of carbon (C), silicon (Si) and metals originally found in activated petroleum waste sludge contribute to the formation of active sites during pyrolysis. The biochar contains functional C groups, Si O structures, and metallic oxides that promote oxidation through the formation of hydroxyl radicals ( OHs) mineralizing petroleum contaminants. Catalytic ozonation of PRW using this sludge biochar (SBC) doubles the total organic carbon removal (53.5%) relative to single ozonation (26.9%). Oxygen (Ox)-, nitrogen (NOx)- and sulfur (OxS)-containing contaminants were decreased by 33.4% (989 vs 659), 58.2% (912 vs 384) and 12.5% (384 vs 336). The present study shows the potential of a “wastes-treat-wastes” process for wastewater treatment.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been receiving an increased attention over the last years due to their potential to combat two global problems: waste pollution and energy demand. Additionally, when a wastewater is used, MFCs can perform its treatment while recovering energy, leading to the possibility of energy-producing wastewater treatment plants, offsetting their operational costs. However, to overcome their current limitations (lower power outputs and higher costs), a clear understanding of the effect of operation and design parameters on its overall performance is mandatory. Therefore, the goal of this work was to evaluate the effect of operating conditions - batch cycle and yeast extract concentration, and design parameters - anode electrode area, membrane thickness and active area, on the overall performance of a single chamber MFC. The MFC operated with a pure culture of Lactobacillus pentosus and a synthetic wastewater based on a real dairy industry effluent. The overall performance was evaluated through the power output and the COD removal rate. Additionally, the biofilm formed at the anode electrode was characterized in terms of biomass, proteins and polysaccharides content. For the conditions used in this work, a maximum power density of 5.04 +/- 0.39 mW/m(2) was achieved with an anode electrode area of 61 cm(2), a batch cycle of 48 h, 50 mg/L of yeast extract and a Nafion 212 membrane with an active area of 25 cm(2). The different conditions tested had a clear effect on the MFC energy production and biofilm characteristics, but not on the ability of L. pentosus to treat the dairy wastewater. The COD removal rates were in the range between 42% and 58%, for all the conditions tested.

International audience; Due to their design and mode of operation, French Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands (VFCWs) accumulate suspended solids from the inflow wastewater in the form of a sludge layer at the surface of the first filter. In order to maintain the treatment performance over the long term, the characteristics of the sludge deposits and their evolution have to be well described. In this objective, a panel of sludge deposit samples taken from 14 French VFCW sewage treatment plants was investigated. Elemental composition and organic matter content, nature and reactivity were analyzed. Results clearly revealed two categories of sludge deposits, namely the “young-age plants” type (1 year of operation and less) and the “mature plants” type (3 years of operation and more). Sludge deposits from the “mature plants” exhibited same biological, physical and chemical properties. Their organic matter was globally less abundant, more humified and less biodegradable than in the young-age plants type. Their overall contents in trace metals were also higher, although in a limited manner. The effect of additional treatments, particularly FeCl3 injection for phosphorus precipitation, was observable in the “young-age plants” group. Finally, the sludge deposits sampled from one particular plant with specific operating conditions were found to exhibit very different characteristics from those of either groups identified. This observation underlined the influence of local conditions on the typology of the sludge deposits.

Although numerous studies have detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater and attempted to find correlations between the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and the number of cases, no consensus has been reached on sample collection and processing, and data analysis. Moreover, the fate of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater treatment plants is another issue, specifically regarding the discharge of the virus into environmental settings and the water cycle. The current study monitored SARS-CoV-2 RNA in influent and effluent wastewater samples with three different concentration methods and sludge samples over six months (July to December 2020) to compare different virus concentration methods, assess the fate of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater treatment plants, and describe the potential relationship between SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in influent and infection dynamics. Skimmed milk flocculation (SMF) resulted in 15.27 ± 3.32% recovery of an internal positive control, Armored RNA, and a high positivity rate of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in stored wastewater samples compared to ultrafiltration methods employing a prefiltration step to eliminate solids in fresh wastewater samples. Our results suggested that SARS-CoV-2 RNA may predominate in solids, and therefore, concentration methods focusing on both supernatant and solid fractions may result in better recovery. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in influent and primary sludge samples but not in secondary and final effluent samples, indicating a significant reduction during primary and secondary treatments. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was first detected in influent on September 30th, 2020. A decay-rate formula was applied to estimate initial concentrations of late-processed samples with SMF. A model based on shedding rate and new cases was applied to estimate SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations and the number of active shedders. Inferred sensitivity of observed and modeled concentrations to the fluctuations in new cases and test-positivity rates indicated a potential contribution of newly infected individuals to SARS-CoV-2 RNA loads in wastewater.

The hydrolysis as an essential step in anaerobic digestion has been commonly evaluated according to the extent of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) released from biosolids. However, little information is currently available for the effect of chemical compositions of SCOD on anaerobic digestion. This study showed that the non-biodegradable, recalcitrant organics in SCOD released from food waste and waste activated sludge pretreated with fungal mash rich in various enzymes were accumulated with the prolonged hydrolysis, while the methane production was closely related to the chemical compositions of the feed. The analyses by excitation emission matrix and size exclusion chromatography-organic carbon detection-organic nitrogen detection clearly revealed that the biodegradability of SCOD and the performance of anaerobic digestion were both determined by the chemical compositions of SCOD. These in turn challenged the present practice with SCOD concentration as a sole indicator in the selection and optimization of the pretreatment methods of biosolids prior to anaerobic digestion. It is expected that this study can offer useful insights into future design, optimization and operation of anaerobic digestion system in consideration of both SCOD concentration and its chemical compositions.

This study reveals the optimization of ultrasonic-Fenton process for the treatment of sludge taken from a local municipal wastewater treatment plant after anaerobic digestion. Box-Behnken design (BBD), a common approach of response surface methodology (RSM), was applied to evaluate and optimize the individual and interactive effects of three process variables, namely Fe2+ dose, H2O2 amount and sonication time for Fenton-ultrasonication method. Five dependent parameters including total organic carbon (TOC), extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), as LB-EPS and TB-EPS, and metals such as Zn and Cu were considered as the responses to investigate. According to the results of analysis of variances (ANOVA), five modelling equations are proposed that can be used to operate the design space with high regression coefficient R2. Modelling results suggest that Fenton parameters, such as: H2O2 and Fe2+ dosage had the significant effects on the overall removal of TOC; whereas, sonication improved the metal removal from the sludge sample. Based on response surface methodology, best performance is achievable under the following conditions: 36 mM of Fe2+, 320 mM H2O2 with 30 min of sonication respectively for all of the responses.

The cost associated with treatment and disposal of excess sludge produced is one of the greatest operational expenses in wastewater treatment plants. In this study, we quantify and explain greatly reduced excess sludge production in the novel glycogen accumulating organism (GAO) dominated drained biofilm system previously shown to be capable of extremely energy efficient removal of organic carbon (biological oxygen demand or BOD) from wastewater. The average excess sludge production rate was 0.05 g VSS g−1 BOD (acetate) removed, which is about 9-times lower than that of comparative studies using the same acetate based synthetic wastewater. The substantially lower sludge yield was attributed to a number of features such as the high oxygen consumption facilitated by direct oxygen uptake from air, high biomass content (21.41 g VSS L−1 of reactor), the predominance of the GAO (Candidatus competibacter) with a low growth yield and the overwhelming presence of the predatory protozoa (Tetramitus) in the biofilm. Overall, the combination of low-energy requirement for air supply (no compressed air supply) and the low excess sludge production rate, could make this novel “GAO drained biofilm” process one of the most economical ways of biological organic carbon removal from wastewater.

Wastewater treatment is challenged by the continuous emergence of chemical and biological contaminants. Disinfection, advanced oxidation, and activated carbon technologies are accessible in high-income countries to suppress them. Low-cost, easily implementable, and scalable solutions are needed for sanitation across regions. We studied the properties of low-cost absorbents recycled from drinking water and wastewater treatment plant residues to remove environmental DNA and xenogenetic elements from used water. Materials characteristics and DNA adsorption properties of used iron-oxide-coated sands and of sewage-sludge biochar obtained by pyrolysis of surplus activated sludge were examined in bench-scale batch and up-flow column systems. Adsorption profiles followed Freundlich isotherms, suggesting a multilayer adsorption of nucleic acids on these materials. Sewage-sludge biochar exhibited high DNA adsorption capacity (1 mg g−1) and long saturation breakthrough times compared to iron-oxide-coated sand (0.2 mg g−1). Selected antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements present on the free-floating extracellular DNA fraction and on the total environmental DNA (i.e., both extra/intracellular) were removed at 85% and 97% by sewage-sludge biochar and at 54% and 66% by iron-oxide-coated sand, respectively. Sewage-sludge biochar is attractive as low-cost adsorbent to minimize the spread of antimicrobial resistances to the aquatic environment while strengthening the role of sewage treatment plants as resource recovery factories.

The sustainability of mining activities is compromised due to the high amounts of mining residues generated that have to be disposed of, often in open dams, that may cause environmental deterioration, e.g. release of toxic elements to water supplies. These residues are, however, secondary resources of raw materials. In the case of Panasqueira mine, they even are a source of tungsten, considered a critical raw material. The present work aims to assess the electrodialytic process efficiency for raw materials extraction from Panasqueira mine residues. Experiments were performed with 2 and 3-compartment electrodialytic reactors, applying current intensities between 50 and 100 mA, from 4 to 14 days, and sample suspensions enhanced with NaCl or effluent. Additionally, control experiments with no current application were carried out. An emission source of microplastics into the environment is laundering synthetic textiles and clothing. Mechanical drying as a pathway for emitting microplastics, however, is poorly understood. In this study, emissions of microplastic fibres were sampled from a domestic vented dryer to assess whether mechanical drying of synthetic textiles releases microplastic fibres into the surrounding air or are captured by the inbuilt filtration system. A blue polyester fleece blanket was repeatedly washed and dried using the 'Normal Dry' program of a common domestic dryer operated at temperatures between 56 and 59 °C for 20 min. Microfibres in the ambient air and during operation of the dryer were sampled and analysed using microscopy for particle quantification and characterisation followed by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Pyr-GC/MS) for chemical characterisation. Blue fibres averaged 6.4 ± 9.2 fibres in the room blank (0.17 ± 0.27 fibres/m3 ), 8.8 ± 8.5 fibres (0.05 ± 0.05 fibres/m3 ) in the procedural blank and 58 ± 60 (1.6 ± 1.8 fibres/ m3 ) in the sample. This is the first study to measure airborne emissions of microplastic fibres from mechanical drying, confirming that it is an emission source of microplastic fibres into air – particularly indoor air. Due to elevated protein content, the food-industry bio-wastes are promising feedstock to produce hierarchical (micromesoporous) carbonaceous materials with the intended use as electrodes in the energy storage solutions. However, the high initial water content, makes their direct activation through high-temperature processes costineffective due to significant heat requirements. In this study, the influence of pretreatment with hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) on wet food-industry bio-wastes, further pyrolysed, was investigated. Selected wastes (brewer's spent grains, spent coffee grains and spent sugar beets) were pre-treated by HTC at 180 degrees C or 240 degrees C, and then pyrolysed at 500 degrees C or 700 degrees C. Obtained materials were examined using elemental analysis, gas adsorption (N-2 and CO2) and FT-IR. Besides minor differences caused by the bio-composition of wastes, the general trends were similar for feedstock. The pretreatment had a beneficial influence on the properties of all wastes. The HTC at 180 degrees C and pyrolysis at 700 degrees C for all wastes show the most promising total specific surface area 560 +/- 10 m(2)/g and accessible specific surface area 96 m(2)/g. Those conditions simultaneously did not reduce the total solid yield in comparison to the one-step process. The pre-treatment at 240 degrees C led to elevated nitrogen incorporation in the carbonaceous structure compared to HTC at 180 degrees C. However, it formed a hierarchical structure that was not stable for the thermal treatment. Study proves the HTC pre-treatment at 180 degrees C is beneficial for the conversion of food-industry bio-wastes into hierarchical carbonaceous material for their use in the energy storage systems application.

The State of Nevada, USA Administrative Code requires a 12-log enteric virus reduction/inactivation, 10-log Giardia cyst reduction, and 10-log Cryptosporidium oocyst reduction for Category A+ reclaimed water suitable for indirect potable reuse (IPR) based on raw wastewater to potable reuse water. Accurately demonstrating log10 reduction values (LRVs) through secondary biological treatment prior to an advanced water treatment train enables redundancy and resiliency for IPR projects while maintaining a high level of public confidence. LRVs for Cryptosporidium and Giardia resulting from secondary biological treatment are not fully established due to a wide range of performance variabilities resulting from different types of secondary biological treatment processes employed in water reclamation. A one-year investigation of two full-scale northern Nevada (e.g. ≤4 mgd; 1.5 × 107 L/day) water reclamation facilities (WRFs) was conducted to monitor Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in untreated wastewater and secondary effluent. This study aimed at establishing secondary treatment LRVs, monitor WRF performance and attempted to correlate performance to protozoan reduction. California's IPR regulations, in which Nevada IPR regulations were modeled after, were based on a maximum concentration of 5-logs (cysts/L) of Giardia and 4-logs (oocysts/L) of Cryptosporidium. The recovery-corrected Giardia and Cryptosporidium concentrations measured in untreated influent (20 samples each at each WRF) were below 5-log cysts/L at the 99th percentile (maximum 4.4-log cysts/L) and 4-log oocysts/L (maximum 2.7 log oocysts/L), respectively. Both secondary treatment WRFs produced secondary effluent that is consistently better than federal and the State of Nevada requirements and perform within an operating envelop for other secondary facilities. Given the results, it appears that a minimum conservative estimate for LRVs for well-operated secondary activated sludge treatment plants (at the 5th percentile) of 0.5 LRV credit for Cryptosporidium and 2.0 LRV for Giardia is warranted. These minimum LRVs are consistent with a conservative review of the available literature.

Anaerobic digestion is achieved through cooperation among various types of microorganisms, and the regulation of microbial communities is key to achieving stable system operation. In this study, the r/K selection theory was adopted to examine the system performance and microbial characteristics in anaerobic reactors with different operating modes (continuous-flow reactors, CFRs; sequencing batch reactors, SBRs) and sludge retention times (25 and 10 days). Four lab-scale reactors (CFR25d, CFR10d, SBR25d, and SBR10d) were operated. In the cycle reaction, CFR25d achieved the highest methane yield (678.0 mL/L) and methane production rate (140.8 mL/(L·h)); while those in CFR10d were the lowest, which could have been due to an accumulation of volatile fatty acids. CFR could wash out r-strategists efficiently, such as Methanosarcina. CFR25d and CFR10d significantly enriched the K-strategist Geobacter, with the relative abundances of 34.0% and 72.6%, respectively. In addition, the hydrogenotrophic methanogens of Methanolinea and Methanospirillum (K-strategists) dominated in CFR25d and CFR10d. Methanobacterium adapted to the diverse operational conditions, but the slow grower Methanosaeta only accounted for 0.9% in CFR10d. Failure to enrich propionate oxidizers resulted in a functional absence of propionate degradation in the CFRs.

Over a period of 12 months, the fate of three hormones, 12 antibiotics and 30 pharmaceutically active substances (PhACs) was investigated during open-air storage without and with composting of anaerobically digested and dewatered sewage sludge. The effect of oxidation conditions during storage on degradation of hormones and PhACs in the sludge biomass was also examined. Under summer and winter conditions in Uppsala County, Sweden. two field-scale sludge windrows were constructed: open-air storage of sewage sludge windrow without composting (NO-COM)) and open-air storage windrow with composting (COM). NO-COM achieved effective removal of Sigma Hormones (85%) and Sigma Antibiotics (95%), but lower removal of Sigma PhACs (34%), during the study year. The top layers of the sludge pile had significantly lower concentrations of Sigma PhACs (3100-5100 ng/g ash) than deeper layers (8000-11,000 ng/g ash). After one year of composting, the degradation in the COM windrow resulted in concentrations of Sigma Hormones (

Biogas production from organic waste is a waste-to-energy technology with the potential to contribute significantly to sustainable energy production. Upgrading of biogas using in situ biomethanation with hydrogen has the potential for surplus electricity storage, and delivery of biogas with a methane content of >90%, allowing for easier integration into the natural gas grid, as well as conversion to other products. Microbial communities in biomethanation reactors undergo changes, however, these changes are largely unexplored. In the present study, metagenome-resolved protein stable isotope probing (Protein-SIP) was applied to laboratory scale batch incubations operating under anaerobic digestion, and (pre-adapted) biomethanation conditions, fed with 13C-labelled bicarbonate, in order to gain insight into the microbial activities during CO2-reduction. The strongest and most microbially diverse isotopic incorporation was observed in the pre-adapted biomethanation incubation. Furthermore, divergent incorporation of 13C-labelled bicarbonate was also observed in the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, with the anaerobic digester incubations primarily showing labelled proteins in the peripheral pathways leading toward production of energy and biomass. The pre-adapted biomethanation incubations consumed H2 and CO2, but did not convert it to CH4, suggesting the production of acetate in these incubations, which was supported by heavy labelling of key enzymes in the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. Twelve (ten high quality) metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) coding for 13C-incorporated proteins were extracted from the metagenome, eight of which contained one or more of the key genes in the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, one of which was affiliated to Methanosarcina. Together, the findings in the present study deepen our knowledge surrounding microbial communities in biomethanation systems, and contribute to the development of better strategies for implementation of biogas upgrading and microbial management.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) plastics not only pollute the environment, but are challenging to treat in an environmentally friendly manner. Biodegradation by insect larvae is potentially an eco-friendly method to treat WEEE plastics, but information about the feeding preference of insect larvae to WEEE plastics is lacking. In this study, a total of nine WEEE and pristine plastics were chosen to feed larvae of the following two insect species, i.e. Galleria mellonella and Tenebrio molitor. G. mellonella larvae significantly favor corresponding pristine plastics compared to two types of WEEE plastics, waste rigid polyurethane (RPU) and waste polystyrene (PS). One possible explanation is the increased chlorine or metals in the WEEE plastics measured using X-ray fluorescence spectrometer analysis. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the destruction of physical structures and changes in surface functional groups were found in the two types of WEEE plastics in the larval frass, implying that the larvae partly biodegraded the plastics. Meanwhile, the powdered waste high impact polystyrene plastics (WHIPS) were ingested, but not the lumpy ones, indicating that the consumption by G. mellonella larvae is improved by the WHIPS physical modification. In addition, G. mellonella larvae presented the following decreasing preference for pristine plastics under individual-plastic-fed mode: RPU > phenol–formaldehyde resin > polyethylene (PE) > polypropylene > PS ≈ polyvinyl chloride; this is possibly due to differences in physical properties and chemical structures of the plastics; feeding preference of the larvae under multiple-plastics-fed mode is relatively consistent to that under individual-plastic-fed mode. Interestingly, the consumption by G. mellonella larvae of PE is higher than that of PS, while T. molitor larvae showed the opposite trend, implying that insect larvae have different plastics preference. The findings provide insights into biodegradation of WEEE plastics by insect larvae.

Membrane fouling in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) is highly influenced by the characteristics of the influent, the mixed liquor microbial community and the operational parameters, all of which are environment specific. Therefore, we studied the dynamics of microbial community during the treatment of real municipal wastewater in a pilotscale anoxic-oxic (A/O) MBR equipped with a gravity-driven membrane filtration system. The MBR was operated at three different solid retention times (SRTs): 25, 40 and 10 days for a total period of 180 days in Nordic environmental conditions. Analysis of microbial community dynamics revealed a high diversity of microbial species at SRT of 40 days, whereas SRT of 25 days was superior with microbial richness. Production of soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) was found to be intensely connected with the SRT and food to microorganism (F/M) ratio. Relatively longer operational period with the lowest rate of membrane fouling was observed at SRT of 25 days, which was resulted from the superior microbial community, lowest production of SMP and loosely bound EPS as well as the lower filtration resistance of larger sludge flocs. Abundance of quorum quenching (QQ) bacteria and granular floc forming bacterial genera at SRT of 25 days provided relatively lower membrane fouling tendency and larger floc formation, respectively. On the other hand, substantial amount of various surface colonizing and EPS producing bacteria was found at SRT of 10 days, which promoted more rapid membrane fouling compared with the fouling rate seen at other tested SRTs. To sum up, this research provides a realistic insight into the impact of SRT on microbial community dynamics and resulting characteristics of mixed liquor, floc size distribution and membrane fouling for improved MBR operation. Here, we use magnetic methods first to quantify the content of strongly magnetic particles of banknotes (US dollars, USD, and British pounds sterling, GBP), and then examine the possibility of their release from handled banknote surfaces. The content of magnetic particles, from magnetic remanence measurements, for the USD and paper GBP banknotes is high; greater, for example, than that in vehicle engine-exhaust emissions, and similar to that for airborne roadside particulate matter (PM). Our magnetic analyses of USD and GBP banknotes, and of the ink pigment widely used in their printing, reveal not only that the banknotes are highly magnetic, but also that strongly magnetic, nano-sized particles are readily and prolifically shed from their surfaces (especially from the USD banknotes). A common practice, prior to increased automation, was for bank tellers to count banknotes by licking a finger to adhere to each successive counted note, and thus speed up the manual counting process. Given the rate of particle shedding reported here, this traditional manual counting procedure must have resulted in prolific transfer of iron-rich nanoparticles both to the fingers and thence to the tongue. We hypothesise that, pre-automation, magnetite and other metal-bearing nanoparticles were repetitively and frequently ingested by bank tellers, and subsequently entered the brain directly via the taste nerve pathway, and/or indirectly via the systemic circulation and the neuroenteric system. This hypothesis may plausibly account for the reported and currently unexplained association between elevated neurodegeneration-related mortality odds ratios and this specific occupation.

The co-treatment of two synthetic faecal sludges (FS-1 and FS-2) with municipal synthetic wastewater (WW) was evaluated in an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) reactor. After characterisation, FS-1 showed the following concentrations, representative for medium-strength FS: 12,180 mg TSS L−1, 24,300 mg total COD L−1, 93.8 mg PO3-P L−1, and 325 mg NH4-N L−1. The NO3-N concentration was relatively high (300 mg L−1). For FS-2, the main difference with FS-1 was a lower nitrate concentration (18 mg L−1). The recipes were added consecutively, together with the WW, to an AGS reactor. In the case of FS-1, the system was fed with 7.2 kg total COD m−3d−1 and 0.5 kg Nitrogen m−3d−1. Undesired denitrification occurred during feeding and settling resulting in floating sludge and wash-out. In the case of FS-2, the system was fed with 8.0 kg total COD m−3d−1 and 0.3 kg Nitrogen m−3d−1. The lower NO3-N concentration in FS-2 resulted in less floating sludge, a more stabilised granular bed and better effluent concentrations. To enhance the hydrolysis of the slowly biodegradable particulates from the synthetic FS, an anaerobic stand-by period was added and the aeration period was increased. Overall, when compared to a control AGS reactor, a lower COD consumption (from 87 to 35 mg g−1 VSS h−1), P-uptake rates (from 6.0 to 2.0 mg P g VSS−1 h−1) and NH4-N removal (from 2.5 to 1.4 mg NH4-N g VSS−1 h−1) were registered after introducing the synthetic FS. Approximately 40% of the granular bed became flocculent at the end of the study, and a reduction of the granular size accompanied by higher solids accumulation in the reactor was observed. A considerable protozoa Vorticella spp. bloom attached to the granules and the accumulated particles occurred; potentially contributing to the removal of the suspended solids which were part of the FS recipe.

The benefits of deammonification to remove nitrogen from sidestreams, i.e., sludge dewatering liquors, in municipal wastewater treatment plants are well accepted. The ammonia removal from dewatering liquors originated from thermal hydrolysis/anaerobic digestion (THP/AD) are deemed challenging. Many different commercial technologies have been applied to remove ammonia from sidestreams, varying in reactor design, biomass growth form and instrumentation and control strategy. Four technologies were tested (a deammonification suspended sludge sequencing batch reactor (S-SBR), a deammonification moving bed biofilm reactor (MEDIA), a deammonification granular sludge sequencing batch reactor (G-SBR), and a nitrification suspended sludge sequencing batch reactor (N-SBR)). All technologies relied on distinct control strategies that actuated on the feed flow leading to a range of different ammonia loading rates. Periods of poor performance were displayed by all technologies and related to imbalances in the chain of deammonification reactions subsequently effecting both load and removal. The S-SBR was most robust, not presenting these imbalances. The S-SBR and G-SBR presented the highest nitrogen removal rates (NRR) of 0.58 and 0.56 kg N m−3 d−1, respectively. The MEDIA and the N-SBR presented an NRR of 0.17 and 0.07 kg N m−3 d−1, respectively. This study demonstrated stable ammonia removal from THP/AD dewatering liquors and did not observe toxicity in the nitrogen removal technologies tested. It was identified that instrumentation and control strategy was the main contributor that enabled higher stability and NRR. Overall, this study provides support in selecting a suitable biological nitrogen removal technology for the treatment of sludge dewatering liquors from THP/AD.

Biological wood oxidation (BWO) is proposed as a cleaner alternative to wood combustion for heat production and wood waste management. Currently, BWO is not extensively studied and little is known about it. Nevertheless, given the composition of wood residues, which is dominated by carbon, nutrient availability may become a limiting factor during BWO. Our objective was to study the nutrition requirements for sustaining the BWO. For this purpose, three different factors including nitrogen addition, phosphorus addition and pH, were studied. Oxygen consumption and mass loss were monitored and used to evaluate the impact of nutrition on BWO and to calculate the theoretical heat production. The result showed that nitrogen addition at a relatively low level (2.5-10 mg/g) enhanced the cumulative oxygen consumption by 60–124% and mass loss by 28–95%, when compared with the BWO without nitrogen addition. The highest nitrogen addition examined in this research (20 mg/g), on the other hand, did not enhance BWO. Different phosphorus addition (0.5–5 mg/g) and pH (4–6) had little impacts on BWO. The highest theoretical heat production rate (0.63 W/kg dry wood biomass) was achieved using 2.5 mg/g nitrogen addition with a 95-day incubation. This suggests that nitrogen addition is required and able to sustain BWO. Besides, the cumulative oxygen consumption showed a good linear relationship with mass loss. This study provides the first indication on the effective quantify of nitrogen addition for enhancing BWO, which contributes to the selection of nutrient source for BWO in future studies.

Separately collected organic fraction of municipal solid waste, also known as biowaste, is typically used to fill the available capacity of digesters at wastewater treatment plants. However, this approach might impair the use of the ensuing digestate for fertilizer production due to the presence of sewage sludge, a contaminated substrate. Worldwide, unsorted municipal solid household waste, i.e. residual waste, is still typically disposed of in landfills or incinerated, despite its high content of biodegradables and recyclables. Once efficiently separated from residual waste by mechanical processes, the biodegradables might be appropriate to substitute biowaste at wastewater treatment plants. Thus, the biowaste would be available for fertilizer production and contribute to a reduction in the demand on non-renewable fertilizers. This study aimed at determining the technical feasibility of co-digesting the mechanically separated organic fraction of residual waste with sewage sludge. Further, key parameters for the implementation of co-digestion at wastewater treatment plants were determined, namely, degradation of the solids and organics, specific methane production, flocculant demand, and dewatered sludge production. The microbial community and diversity in both mono- and co-digestion was also investigated. Semi-continuous laboratory scale experiments showed that the co-substrate derived from the residual waste provided a stable anaerobic co-digestion process, producing 206 to 245 L of methane per kilogram of volatiles solids added to the digester. The dewaterability of the digestate increased by 4.8 percentage points when the co-substrate was added; however, there was also an increase in the flocculant demand. The specific dewatered sludge production was 955 kg per ton of total solids of co-substrate added to the digester. Amplicon sequencing analysis provided a detailed insight into the microbial communities, which were primarily affected by the addition of co-substrate. The microbiota was fully functional and no inhibition or problems in the anaerobic digestion process were observed after co-substrate addition.

Inadequate sanitation can lead to the spread of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) via contaminated water. Unfortunately, wastewater treatment is not universal in many developing and emerging countries, especially in rural and peri-urban locations that are remote from central sewers. As such, small-scale, more sustainable treatment options are needed, such as aerobic-Denitrifying Downflow Hanging Sponge (DDHS) bioreactors. In this study, DDHS reactors were assessed for such applications, and achieved over 79% and 84% removal of Chemical Oxygen Demand and Ammonium, respectively, and up to 71% removal of Total Nitrogen (TN) from domestic wastes. Elevated TN removals were achieved via bypassing a fraction of raw wastewater around the top layer of the DDHS system to promote denitrification. However, it was not known how this bypass impacts AMR gene (ARG) and mobile genetic element (MGE) levels in treated effluents. High-throughput qPCR was used to quantify ARG and MGE levels in DDHS bioreactors as a function of percent bypass (0, 10, 20 and 30% by volume). All systems obtained over 90% ARG reduction, although effluent ARG and TN levels differed among bypass regimes, with co-optimal reductions occurring at ~20% bypass. ARG removal paralleled bacterial removal rate, although effluent bacteria tended to have greater genetic plasticity based on higher apparent MGE levels per cell. Overall, TN removal increased and ARG removal decreased with increasing bypass, therefore co-optimization is needed in each DDHS application to achieve locally targeted TN and AMR effluent levels.

Exposure to water and high air humidity may affect the preservation of wood products as many preservatives are water-soluble and thus likely to leach. In this study, depletion of a common fungicide, tebuconazole (TAZ), from treated wood was investigated using a 14C-labeled tracer. The wood species and treatment technique were chosen to be representative of products such as windows and doors; specifically, ponderosa pine was dip treated with a solvent-based, metal-free formulation. The impact of different aqueous settings including high air humidity, and either simulated continuous or intermittent rain was evaluated over a period of two months. Along with the exposure type, the effect of end-grain sealing on TAZ loss was explored. Despite the exposure of treated wood to laboratory-simulated harsh environmental conditions, more than 60% of the originally sorbed TAZ remained in the wood under all scenarios. While high air humidity did not lead to TAZ depletion, simulated continuous rain led to a TAZ leaching mainly from the end grain. TAZ leaching was found to be higher for unpainted wood, where up to 40% of the originally sorbed TAZ was prone to depletion from an end grain. End-grain sealing with water-based primer and paint led to a substantial two-fold reduction of TAZ leaching. Unexpectedly, wood exposure to intermittent rain caused additional TAZ loss that could not be explained only by water leaching.
